Since the beginning of our early settlement, the trusty horse has been a dedicated worker and constant companion to generations of families as they fashioned their new homes and lives on the rugged prairies. Their purpose in our every day existence may have changed just a little along the way, but for countless years in the exciting sports of rodeo and chuckwagon racing, these magnificent critters have been a vitally important part of the greatest and grittiest performances and successes of all contestants and aspiring champions. There have been so many wild and woolly thrills and chills created and shared on their backs and through the sheer tenacity, spirit, and skills of these amazing and always faithful horses in so many ways.

During each and every event and facet of rodeo, both yesterday and today, the skills and luck of the wily participants will always be complimented and depend upon the split second performance and stamina of those mighty horses who are not just along for the ride. Whether it is bareback, saddle bronc, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, the wild horse race, or

whatever, the horse has and always will be a vitally important part of the action and the score.

Let us also not forget the thrilling dash down the dusty track of the powerful chuckwagon teams and pony chucks, as well as the crucial daily support of the pick-up men, the glitz of the grand entry, the crews behind the scenes, and on and on. Together, this amazing combination of men, women, and the best stock in the world will continue to thrill thousands of avid fans for many years to come.

The 2014 edition of our Ponoka Stampede will proudly celebrate the ‘Year of the Horse’ as their theme throughout their busy and exciting seven-day run from June 25 to July 1. If one takes a little time to browse through the pages of the classic Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, they will find hundreds of photos and bios of the colorful contestants, builders, announcers, officials, stock contractors, bull fighters, and individuals who, over the years, have helped to build the sport of rodeo to the peak of success and popularity that it enjoys today.

First inductees into the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame The first inductees into the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame in November 1981 were multi-talented bronc rider Peter Charles Knight along with the tenacious and the almost unridable and legendary bucking horse Midnight.

Knight was born in Philadelphia in May 1903 and moved with his family in 1914 to a homestead in the Cross field area. The farm work was extremely heavy, but Pete found time to begin his rodeo career at the age of 15, winning second money in the bronc riding event of the home-town showdown. Despite injuries and work, his career boomed quickly, becoming one of the only cowboys to ever ride ‘Midnight’ in Montreal in 1926, as well as winning the BR championship of the Calgary Stampede in 1927-1930 and 1933. Pete Knight went on to win many championships, but his amazing career came to a sudden and tragic end on May 23, 1937 at a rodeo in Hayward, California.

As a three year old, Midnight was broken as a cow-horse to work on the range, but was still ready to buck off any rider as soon as he got home. In 1924, his owner entered him in the Calgary Stampede, from which time his reputation grew, and was never ridden until Pete Knight performed the miracle in 1926.

Midnight continued to work in rodeos and Wild West shows in the United States and Europe, but unfortunately died while working the Denver Rodeo in November 1936. On July 9, 1967 the Midnight Stadium in Fort MacLeod was opened in recognition of the amazing rodeo career of this powerful bucking horse.

The Butterfield boys, Brian, Tom, and Bud, purchased Spud for $1000.00 straight from the race track in Vancouver in the early 1950s and brought him home to the ranch west of Ponoka. Spud turned out to be an extremely quick and agile horse, with an exceptional temperament, and would work the Steer Wrestling event with the boys through the 1950’s until his retirement in 1965.

Along the way the Butterfield brothers would win six Canadian Steer Wrestling Championships, and have always claimed that Spud was probably the best horse ever to go down the rodeo road in Canada. He passed away at the age of 28, and was buried at the ranch.

Some of the other great rodeo horses that have been inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame over the years include: Five Minutes to Midnight (SB 1921-1945), Three Bars (BB 1961-1986), Kingsway Skoal (SB 1982-1997), American Express (SB retired in 1983), Wayne Vold’s Sarcee Sorrel (SB 1964-1984), Lonesome Me (BB and SB retired in 2000), High Chaperal (BB), Grated Coconut (BB retired in 2010), Fred-Rope horse (owned by Larry Robinson), Transport (SB 21 year career-died at age 32 in 1993), Moonshine #33 (SB retired in 1984), Moon Rocket #231 (BB died in 1989), Airwolf (SB), Guilty Cat (SB and BB 1975), Necklace (BB), Blue Bill (SB), Twist, Wyatt Earp Skoal (SB),Cindy Rocket, and Coyote (BB).

For one week of the year, the small town of Ponoka becomes a cowboy metropolis that brings thousands to its small community to enjoy the Annual Ponoka Stampede.

Organizers call it the Wild West of ’36 and Stampede President Joe Dodds has a special phrase that many cowboys use when its rodeo time. “It’s better than Christmas, it lasts a whole week.”

If it has western roots or involves cowboys, the chances are rodeo lovers will be able to see some of the action over the busy Stampede week from June 24 to July 1. Members of the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association work year round to bring high quality entertainment, which starts with the Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding Event.

This Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event was added to the Ponoka Stampede list of events last year and gets things going for rodeo fans.

“You kind of forget about your life

for seven days,” said Dodds.

Events at the Ponoka Stampede are sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is in the top 10 total payouts in the world.

Events during the week are geared for the entire family and involve pancake breakfasts, a three-mile long parade and midway. Rodeo lovers will get their fair share of cowboys and guns during the Alberta Mounted Shooters Association show at the Calnash Ag Event Centre and in the evening, grandstand music performances by the likes of Corb Lund and Big and Rich are sure to keep country music lovers happy.

A total of four nights finish with a bang during the fireworks displays, which gets people excited for the next day of rodeo and chuckwagon action.

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association provides fans with six nights of entertainment, including the $50,000 Tommy Dorchester Dash for Cash.

The steer wrestlers (bulldoggers), calf ropers and team ropers have two go-rounds in a day; slack in the morning and then during the pro rodeo in the afternoon. This was done to give competitors a fighting chance to win.

Infield entertainment is always fun with rodeo clown Ash (Crash) Cooper keeping people laughing during the rodeo. Also horse trainer Bobby Kerr will show thousands of attendees the bond that can be created between a horse and his owner.

People from all over the world come to the Ponoka Stampede for their vacation. Dodds has seen licence plates from Alaska, the Yukon and the United States.

“We try to put on a first class show and it works all the way down,” he says.

Another feature during the rodeo week is the Tough Enough to Wear Pink awareness day for June 28. The idea was created by Wrangler to raise awareness for breast cancer and the Stampede Association took on the idea in 2007.

The Dash for Cash and the Stampede Showdown — which brings the best four riders in all the rodeo events in a final exciting showdown — on the last day of the Ponoka Stampede are a crowd favourite that has everyone involved on the edge of their seats.

CHUCKWAGON CHAMP NAMED HONORARY STAMPEDE PRESIDENT

Before the Ponoka Stampede of 2013 had even taken place, Garry Dorchester’s name was mentioned for the position of Honorary Stampede President for the 2014 Stampede.

When Senator Shorty Jones was asked to provide names for the position more than a year ago, he immediately thought of Dorchester.

When the Stampede board gathered at the Calnash Ag Event Centre to deliver the good news to Dorchester, he could hardly believe his ears.

“It’s quite a privilege; for the Ponoka Stampede to ask,” said Dorchester, who added he was honored to be chosen.

at the Ponoka Stampede for 15 years and has been attending the rodeo for the last 60. “I probably haven’t missed a Ponoka Stampede since I was two years old,” said Dorchester.

Although he stopped racing in 1979, Dorchester just could not tear himself

away from the Stampede. “They have one of the best shows.”

Before the announcement was made, the Ponoka Stampede directors let Dorchester’s wife Dauna in on the secret.

“They just asked me to get him here,” said Dauna, referring to the Calnash Ag

Event Centre. She recalls having to sneak his cowboy hat into the vehicle so he would not suspect anything.

“Thanks to Shorty and the whole crew, the Stampede board,” said Dorchester.

ALBERTA SINGER CORB LUND RETURNS TO THE PONOKA STAMPEDE

Outlaw country singer Corb Lund is on the road again with his band Hurtin’ Albertans, and is bringing his expressive music to the Ponoka Stampede for the second time since 2007.

Raised in southern Alberta in a ranching family, Lund is familiar with rodeo, as many of his family members have been competitors over the years.

“Both sides of my family have deep rodeo roots,” said Lund.

Lund’s grandfathers were saddlebronc riders and he enjoys the Ponoka Stampede, not just for the event itself, but also

because of how things are run. “I like the long-score bulldogging.”

Long-score bulldogging is also known as the Pendleton Run, which means a steer wrestler, team roper or tiedown roper needs to be prepared to catch up to the steer that has a long track to gain speed.

“In Ponoka they do it the old-school way where they have it (the steer) come down a long alley instead of just coming out of a regular chute,” explained Lund.

“It’s a lot wilder.”

The Ponoka Stampede has a special place in Lund’s heart as he performed here in 2007. He tells the tale of his per-

formance in a song on his 2007 album “Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!”

The song The Horse I Rode in On tells the story of Lund’s uncle Lynn Jensen, who put Lund onto a horse before riding on the stage to perform at the Ponoka Stampede.

“I rode up to the stage on horseback, it was pretty cool,” said Lund.

He says he will be dedicating his Ponoka performance to Jensen, who passed away in 2009. He has fond memories of his uncle.

“He was a really true, western original. He was a really great uncle,” stated Lund.

Jensen was immortalized in the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame for many accomplishments including serving with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association.

Country singer Corb Lund will kick off the musical entertainment for the Ponoka Stampede at the grandstands June 25. That is the same night the winner of the Dodge Truck Giveaway is announced.

Country music at its roots While Lund feels writing is something that has always come naturally to him, the musician says singing and playing guitar has not been as easy.

“I know I’m not the best guitar player…and same with my singing. I’m an adequate singer and both of those things I had to teach myself how to do them.”

Developing those skills took much work and Lund found he emulated Willie Nelson.

“He’s fantastic and he structures himself really well, and he works within his limitations,” he explained.

Lund’s writing is not something most people will hear on the radio. He suggests popular country music found on mainstream radio has little soul to it, but if a fan digs around, they would probably find quality music in any genre.

“I have an entirely different goal from the guys that do that kind of music,” said Lund. “They are trying to get famous and make money. I’m trying to express myself with my art.”

Lund feels country music on the radio has a deliberate sound that a person would recognize as pop country. “Some people like that and that’s cool but it’s not for me.”

“There’s very little western in country and western, and that’s kind of a drag,” added Lund.

While making money isn’t a bad thing, Lund suggests he wants to be able to enjoy hearing his songs if played on the radio. His ranching background from southern Alberta may have contributed to the story telling sound of his music.

“Playing in an indie rock band for 10 years was good training for approaching country, because I approach country with abandon…I’m not afraid to bend the country rules,” said Lund.

He played bass with The Smalls in the early 1990s and the band has recently announced a reunion tour over the 2014 summer.

Lund suggests there are not many young country western musicians who are writing music like Ian Tyson used to and while they are there, music fans need to dig deeper into the scene to find it.

Lund and his travelling band The Hurting’ Albertans open up the entertainment at the Stampede June 25, the same night of the Dodge truck giveaway. He also just released a new album called Counterfeit Blues June 17 with a release party in Brooks June 20. The album is a collection of old songs re-cut.

The Ponoka Stampede art show is in for some big changes this year.

Art show director Inge Sybrandi wanted to keep the show innovative and has worked hard to introduce new features to the annual tradition, which runs from June 28 to July 1.

In a new practice, another western piece — this year a Bernie Brown drawing of WPCA driver Dallas Dorchester — is being put on display at the show. It will then be sold at the Stampede’s art auction, held June 30. A number of other limited edition replicas will also be available.

Sybrandi is also bringing in a new crop of artists and vendors to the show. “Pretty much all the ones that are more well-known couldn’t make it. It’s good though.

It keeps the show fresh.”

A talented art instructor has also been hired to host a series of open studio lessons at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex.

The lessons will run at $100

per person for four days, with three hours of instruction each day. “People expect to walk into a trade show, but I think it educates people about art,” said Sybrandi.

“It helps expose people to art who would otherwise not be exposed to it,” she added.

Sybrandi hopes to hire a wellknown instructor each year for a similar format.

“There’s another group of people I really wanted to get involved in this art show, and that was Maskwacis,” said Sybrandi.

The Samson Cree Nation is holding an exhibit at the show explaining the Samson Cree place names for communities in the area, including Ponoka and Wetaskiwin.

Sybrandi feels it is an appropriate addition to the show, especially with the name change of the community earlier this year. She also wants to change people’s perception of Maskwacis by getting First Nations involvement.

“They have a high percentage of artists in their community.

If this year goes well, I’m hoping to continue with that; bring more of their artists in to the show, especially their younger artists,” said Sybrandi.

Samson Cree Nation will also be demonstrating beading and sewing during the event.

Musical entertainment is also being provided at the show, as singer/songwriter Matt Robertson will be filling the building with his music, two times a day. “He’s kind of the poetry, ranch, rodeo kind of style,” said Sybrandi.

On July 1, Mel Highland will join Robertson for a joint performance.

The art auction will be held at the Stagecoach Saloon on June 30, starting at 4 p.m.

There are 21 lots up for sale.

Art pieces are being displayed around the community prior to Stampede week and the auction to raise interest and awareness. Art will be put on view at the Servus Credit Union, Wolf Creek Golf Resort, Siding 14 Gallery, ATB Financial, Cilantro and Chive, Jones Boys Saddlery and Western Wear, Old Iron Horse, Huckleberry’s in Wetaskiwin and the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, located in the Calnash Ag Event Centre.

STAMPEDE QUEEN IMMERSES HERSELF IN RODEO WORLD

No stranger to the rodeo game or queening, this year’s Ponoka Stampede Queen is driving right into her role with open arms and a smile.

Katy Lucas, 21, of Carstairs has always been drawn to rodeo pageants and the idea of communicating her love of the sport to the world.

At 15, Lucas became the Carstairs Rodeo Queen and was named the Alberta High School Rodeo Queen in 2011.

For a while, many pageants were lagging in popularity as girls found other things to occupy their time. However, Lucas says they are once again gaining speed, both in the number of girls running and the quality of contestants.

Girls are starting at a younger age and it is being taken more seriously than before. By the time a queen reaches Miss Rodeo Canada, it is not uncommon for her to have around seven other queen titles under her belt, says Lucas. “The girls coming into (Miss Rodeo) Canada, they’re ready.”

Lucas began riding from a young age, as is the way with her family, and at age 10 began competing at junior rodeos in team roping, barrel racing, poles and goat tying. “My dad (Joe Lucas), he rodeoed professionally for 25 years. I was just kinda thrust into it from the beginning,” she said.

Lucas enjoys her queen responsibilities as much as rodeoing, but finds the motivation and personal rewards different. “You’re not there looking as good . . . You’re there as a competitor and as an athlete.”

As a breakaway roper, Lucas finds more meaning than just the competition in the family legacy of the event. “My dad roped for years and years, so it’s really nice for me to carry on this heritage, too.”

Lucas says, in the past, it wasn’t as common to see female ropers, but that’s changing. “But there’s now a string of girls. Now they might go pro some day.”

As a queen, competitor and activist in the world of rodeo, Lucas supports the La Due Ladies Lunch, a nonprofit organization. “They support women in rodeo that are different. So it’s really cool for me to represent an organization like that, as a roper.”

When thinking about her greatest rodeo accomplishment, Lucas was quick to name her title of ladies’ high

point and reserve champion, earned last year.

In 2012, she was the Canadian College team roping leader. Out of the 60 ropers involved, approximately five were female. “I was the highest point leader.”

That title took the whole rodeo season into account. “That one was cool because I had to be consistently better.”

Lucas also graduated from Lethbridge College one year ago from the Communication-Arts-Broadcasting program. Since then, she has worked with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, Canadian Pro Rodeo News and Rodeo Classifieds.

“For me, being a communication arts graduate, it’s exactly where I feel comfortable. I love speaking with people and showing the rodeo world with them,” said Lucas. “I really like doing the interviews.

For me, I get as much of a rush as I do competing.”

“It just seemed like a natural fit for me. The world of broadcasting and rodeo is getting bigger and bigger,” she added.

Eventually, Lucas is hoping her rodeo broadcasting career takes her to the United States. “It would just be such a great experience for me and a way to move my career forward. My dream job would be to broadcast at the NFR (National Finals Rodeo).”

Houston, TX was also on her to-do list, as was getting involved with the new rodeo series called The American. The organization has used barrel racers in the past when they need broadcasters. “They need girls,” said Lucas.

Many rodeos in the United States run at a different time than when Lucas would be competing. “So I can juggle both sides of the border.

Lucas also runs her own jewelry company, which she started in her first year of college. “It’s just kind of a spare time thing. I find I’m a really creative person.”

Lucas will be performing her queenly duties at the Ponoka Stampede and in the future, hopes to run for Miss Rodeo Canada.

Children with special needs will have their own day to shine during the Ponoka Stampede in an event called the Rodeo Challenge, which provides modified rodeo events to young cowboy lovers.

This year the 15th annual challenge will be hosted June 28 in the infield at the Stampede Grounds, and it has become a popular event for families with children with special needs.

It was first organized by Marjorie and Ken Krossa and Lynden and Diane Vold 15 years ago to give Krossa’s daughter Skylar, who has Down Syndrome, a chance at some modified rodeo events.

“We started with Skylar because she likes to rodeo,” says Marjorie Krossa.

The Giddy-up Rodeo, hosted by the Calgary Stampede, was the inspiration behind the Rodeo Challenge and the Krossas and Volds worked hard to bring it to Ponoka. After much dedication and help from the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association, the challenge took flight and has been a regular feature during the busy week ever since.

The goal is to give these kids a chance to have a day for themselves, explained Krossa. She feels the children have fun and gain a sense of pride, especially when they receive their own trophy, presented by Encana, who has been a trophy sponsor for many years.

Families pre-register their kids and Krossa cannot remember the last time they had any empty spots. Kids aged five to 18 with physical or mental challenges are welcome.

SHRINERS RAISING AWARENESS FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL Shriners will be a part of the Ponoka parade, they will be in a red Ford Explorer decorated like a Shriner’s fez

A regular feature in the Ponoka Stampede Parade, set for June 27 this year, is the Al Shamal Shriners fire truck.

Parade fans always enjoy seeing the fire truck and the Shriners making their visit to Ponoka during the three-mile long parade route.

The group has been a regular part of the parade for many years now and this year’s parade-goers can expect a new addition to the parade; the Shriners are touring the country with a red Ford Explorer decorated like a Shriner’s fez, complete with a tassel.

The car will take part in a 66-day tour across Canada called the Exceptional Care Odyssey. Don Anderson, Shriners public relations chairperson for northern Alberta, says the goal of the tour is to raise awareness of what the Shriners Hospital for Children in Canada does.

The hospital is located in Montreal, Que. close to the McGill University campus and is a brand new building that provides specialized care to children such as orthopaedic care provided to infants, children and teens for such conditions as scoliosis, brittle bone disease, club feet, hip dysplasia, leg length discrepancies and cerebral palsy as well as other conditions.

Anderson said he looks forward to showing the car off in Ponoka. “It’s a brand new building…this trip is a public awareness activity.”

He suggests the new hospital is a wonderful addition to the many medical facilities in the area.

“From our perspective it’s the collaborative nature of the facilities that are created,” he explained.

Anderson says doctors and specialists work closely with families. “Our facility allows us to work collaboratively with the best interests of the patient.”

The tour is expected visit 55 cities and towns, 40 patient representatives and families and 17 shrine temples.

Anderson says there will be an opportunity for people to make donations during the parade but suggests the main focus is to raise awareness. For more information check out: www.shrinersexceptionalcampaign.ca/

STAMPEDE KICK-OFF EVENT

This is the second year since the Ponoka Stampede Association took over the PBR Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding event. The event kicks off the Stampede week June 24 at the Stampede Grounds.

The top bull riders and rankest bulls from around the world are once again heading for Ponoka to help kick off the weeklong Ponoka Stampede at the Jace Harty Memorial PBR event.

With 36 contestants coming from as far away as Australia and Ireland to claim their eight seconds atop the bucking beast and hopefully take home the championship title, it will be a wild night for the contestants, fans and organizers alike.

“The champion from last year, Chase Outlaw, he’s coming back to try again,” said Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association director Gary Harbin.

The total purse up for grabs at this year’s event is $40,000.

The 12th annual Jace Harty Memorial was added to the Stampede lineup last year, and became the explosive first event, which Harbin says is quite important in its own right.

“Number one, it’s a kickoff for the Stampede week and it’s a memorial for a young local cowboy who died in a traffic accident . . . more than 12 years ago,” Harbin explained. Jace Harty died in vehicle accident near Stettler more than a decade ago.

Just a few of the big names gracing the PBR memorial this year are Chad Besplug, Zane Lambert, Chase Outlaw, Tyler Pankewitz, Ty Pozzobon and Scott Schniffer.

Two well known bulls that will be trying their hardest to throw the tough cowboys are Rusty Nails of Nanson Vold Rodeo Corp. and last year’s PBR World Finals stock contestant Bringing Sexy Back, of Two Bit Bucking Bulls.

“I would encourage all rodeo fans to the kick off event . . . So they have the opportunity to see the best in Canada,” said Harbin.

PONOKA STAMPEDE PARADE GUIDELINES 1. Entries should be at the Arena marshalling area before 9:00 a.m. to be judged.

Entries should be totally assembled and participants ready to be judged.

2. The Parade Committee reserves the right to refuse access to the Parade to any entry deemed unsuitable, or dangerous.

3. An ambulance and tow truck will be on standby in case of any emergency.

4. Entries must not deviate from the established parade route unless directed by a police of¿cer or parade of¿cial.

5. No smoking or alcoholic beverages are allowed on parade entries.

6. Items such as candy, balloons, etc. may be given out to spectators by “Walkers” who accompany the Àoat and hand out treats from a safe distance by using small bags or pails. There is to be NO THROWING OF CANDY from Àoats for safety’s sake.

7. All entries should be 80% decorated and decorations securely fastened.

8. Individuals driving quads or garden tractors on the parade route must be over the age of 14.

9. Along the parade route you may encounter travelling parade marshals who have the authority to ask you to slow down, speed up, etc.

So in 2011, with little money in the bank, Kerr decided to compete in what is now called the Mustang Million. A grueling 120-day horse-training contest that starts with a wild horse and ends with a final test of a trainer’s skill.

Kerr placed in the top five in 2011 and then first in 2012. Since then he had been pretty busy.

“That got me a lot of attention,” he said.

Rodeo companies around North America have sought his skills to entertain rodeo fans around the world. Kerr also competed in the 2013 Mustang Million, featuring a prize purse th of $1 million. While he did not win the event, he was second on one horse and third on another, the experience has had him on the road entertaining thousands of people.

He will show two important aspects of the horses he trains. The first is that his horses were wild not that long ago and secondly, Kerr says he will show the crowd how the bond and trust of a cowboy “ Care in the Community” and his horse can be created.

BERNIE BROWN POSTER UP FOR AUCTION THIS YEAR

A relatively new feature at the Ponoka Stampede is the art auction that brings some of the finest western artwork to town for collectors.

This year, the Ponoka Stampede Association commissioned pencil artist Bernie Brown to draw the image that would be seen by thousands of people. What many people don’t realize is this may be the last poster the artist has ever created.

Brown said the association felt he was the ideal person to draw a picture of chuckwagon driver Dallas Dorchester, who is also well known in Ponoka and was awarded with a lifetime Ponoka Stampede membership in 2006.

In 2008, Dorchester died after a battle with cancer and the association wanted a way to immortalize the man who helped build the World Professional Chuckwagon Association.

Brown’s poster depicts four grey horses, Dorchester himself and two outriders in the background and the artist says it was a collaborative effort between him and the association. Drawing the poster took some time as Brown only uses graphite pencils and he does not blend the pencil into the paper.

“It probably took me between 100 to 130 hours,” said Brown.

Taking ideas from different pictures and from ideas from Dorchester’s wife and members of the Stampede Association, Brown says he came up with a rendition that he feels fits the chuckwagon rider’s personality.

The trick was being able to showcase Dorchester and still give a sense of the ac-

tion, which is why there are only two outriders in the picture. Only in the last few years have Ponoka Stampede organizers changed the number of outriders from four to two.

In Dorchester’s days, there were four.

“How much do you put in and how much do you eliminate?” Brown asked.

He is unsure what the future will hold but suggests this was the last poster he would ever draw.

“It was a nice way to wrap it up.”

Since the poster was unveiled, Brown has heard positive feedback on it; not only as a work of art but also because people who knew Dorchester, say they

recognize his chuckwagon driving in it.

Owing to a previous commitment, Brown has a family wedding to attend and will not be at the Ponoka Stampede this year but hopes to return and visit for recreation in the future.

There are only 78 reprints of this poster, to go along with the 78th anniversary of the Ponoka Stampede, and the original will be auctioned off June 30th at the Western Art Auction at the Stagecoach Saloon.

Keeping the spirit of rodeo alive is important to the Ponoka Stampede Association and one way they do that is with a scholarship aimed at young cowboys and girls.

Each spring, two students from Ponoka Secondary Campus are rewarded with $500 each, in the name of Tom Butterfield.

The Tom Butterfield Creating Cowboys Scholarship Fund was developed through the combined efforts of Stampede director Gary Harbin and Inge Sybrandi, an artist living in Ponoka.

Sybrandi says the scholarship honours Butterfield who was a big advocate of the western life.

“Tom Butterfield had incredible influence,” said Sybrandi.

“He was good at supporting young people in rodeo,” she added.

The rodeo action is not just contained to the Ponoka Stampede grounds during Stampede week; fans can also check the excitement going on all week at the Calnash Ag Event Centre.

A modern image of the Wild West gunslingers, the True Grit Mounted Shooters run their performances from June 24 to 26.

Mounted shooting is one of the fastest growing equine sports in North America; a competitive, timed sport demanding marksmanship and a close bond between horse and rider.

Despite using blanks in their guns, the riders must still train the horses for the noise.

Riders start with cap guns and work their way up to the sport’s standard; the revolver.

In the past, it has been the Alberta Mounted Shooters Association riders gracing Stampede with their blazing guns, but this year the shooters are going to be showing their “true grit.”

Starting June 27, the action of the ag centre switches gears to a different pace and image of the west.

Reminiscent of the western and even modern ranches comes the

sport of team penning.

This is the third year penning has been included in the Ponoka Stampede lineup.

With up to 1,000 head of cattle needed for the competition, the high stakes purse is made up mainly of the entry fees.

After picking up the guitar in 1990, Trevor went on to release 16 albums and three DVD’s; which have received airplay in Canada, and some in the United States, Europe ad other parts of the world. He has written and recorded over 170 songs to date.

Presently living in Tuxford Saskatchewan with his wife Jennifer, Trevor takes time to reflect.

HOARDS OF VOLUNTEERS SUPPORT PONOKA STAMPEDE

The many volunteers that flock to the Ponoka Stampede grounds, rain or shine, are the backbone of the Ponoka Stampede. Without their yearly support beginning long before the opening day and continuing after the last bull has left the arena, the Stampede would cease to exist.

Ponoka Stampede Association president Joe Dodds says the Stampede attracts more than 1,000 volunteers each year.

“Ponoka Stampede th runs on volunteers. We have the best in Canada,” said Dodds.

The enthusiastic volunteers waste no time getting down to business and shaping Canada’s largest sevenday outdoor pro rodeo into a phenomenal, world-renowned event that draws fans from across the world. Their belief in the importance of what they do is what keeps a little piece of the old west alive in Ponoka.

From checking tickets, to flipping pancakes, to cleaning up litter, no job is too small for the volunteers. To reward the volunteers’ endless support, a banquet dinner is held every year in their honour.

Retuning volunteers—and there are many—or those looking to lend a hand for the first time are always encouraged to come out and help community groups such as the Ponoka Legion, 4-H members and sports teams are also quick to lend a hand during the week.

“Some people use holidays to volunteer at the Ponoka Stampede.

That’s what makes it work,” said Dodds.

TRI-SERVICES CABIN A VALUED LANDMARK FOR PARENTS

In taking a break from the wild rides of roughstock riders and the dust kicked up from the hooves of barrel racing horses, those in Ponoka for the Ponoka Stampede can check out the fresh produce and other items for sale at the Farmers’ Market.

Held at the Ponoka Culture and Recreational Complex, the Farmers’ Market is managed by long-time organizer Donna Merrill.

With more than 100 tables and 80 vendors gracing the market with a variety of wares, the Farmers’ Market is a fantastic place to hunt down fresh and locally grown fruits and vegetables, woodworking artisans and an array of western style products fit for Stampede week.

to 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the first two days and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the third, the Farmers’ Market ensures exposure for its vendors after the event gained the third day a few years back.

This allows browsers and potential buyers to get a feel for the collection of items before opening their wallets and increases foot traffic.

“It’s exciting with new vendors, a full house and all kinds of traffic going through,” said Merrill.

This year, vendors from as far away as central British Columbia are coming to be a part of Stampede week’s market.

Merrill and the Farmers’ Market remain actively involved with philanthropy and hold regular 50/50 draws, with proceeds going to charities and other organizations within the community.

Safety is an important concern during the Ponoka Stampede and all three first response agencies known as the Emergency Tri-Services, work to ensure the thousands of people who flock to Ponoka are safe.

Emergency Tri-Services include the Ponoka RCMP, the Ponoka Fire Department and Guardian Ambulance.

One safety aspect of the rodeo is the Tri-Services cabin that is parked near the main entrance.

Fire Chief Ted Dillon says the cabin is run by volunteers from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. They deal with issues such as minor cuts and scrapes, lost children and other issues. “We need something to help us deal with matters.”

The building also acts as a command post in the event of a major emergency and can be moved if necessary. Tri-Services’ members volunteer their time during the Stampede and Victim Services advocates also take time out of their schedule to help out.

Dillon says the cabin is an ideal spot for parents to find lost children as most people use it as a landmark at the Stampede Grounds. Emergency personnel also have access to radio.

Dillon feels 80 per cent of the people who come to the Stampede walk by the cabin, which is a helpful reminder for those who may have some need of care. A week of rodeo and thousands of people keeps everyone busy and emergency workers try to be aware of events and stay in close contact with the different agencies.

“It’s been great for the rodeo. For us, for everybody,” says Dillon.

Police keep busy Alcohol related incidences do increase during the week, but more so over the weekend, and they keep officers busy, says RCMP Staff Sgt. Cameron Chisholm. “The more people, the more potential for the demands on police.”

“The members are fully engaged in a variety of work,” he added.

Police officers from other detachments come during the week to deal with the influx of people.

“The biggest concern is the increase in the population relating to the event.”

Planning involves Tri-Services organizing their manpower with pre-stampede meetings but Chisholm sees the week of rodeo as an exciting time for attendees.

Trailer parking a challenge The sheer number of vehicles in Ponoka during the busy week is enough that people camp in just about any flat spot available to them. In the last two years, some of those spots have been along the streets and boulevards and Dillon monitors activity closely.

Approximately 95 per cent of campers are contained in the campgrounds with agencies such as the Ponoka Legion allowing people to camp on their property. Some party goers can get out of hand, but this can occur in the campground as well as outside. Dillon’s goal is to keep people safe and he keeps in constant communication with all the agencies and landowners.

Dillon feels campers generally act appropriately and contain their garbage but if there is inappropriate behaviour, those people are asked to leave. “They’re very polite and more than obliging.”

They don’t call it the Half Mile of Hell for nothing.

Four thoroughbred horses, one driver and chuckwagon with two supporting outriders; multiply that by four and you’ve got yourself a chuckwagon race.

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association has been making Ponoka a stop on its tour every year for many years now and is an exciting feature of the Ponoka Stampede.

For six nights, rodeo fans can enjoy the action of the races and as the wagons near the finish line a rumbling thunder can be heard from thousands of fans stomping their feet on the metal grandstands. People love the organized chaos that a chuckwagon race brings.

This form of racing is part of the western heritage, says Arnold McKernon, WPCA president. “Our guys work extremely hard and they like doing it.”

A week of hard driving culminates in the top four racers competing

for bragging rights and the $50,000 Tommy Dorchester “Dash for Cash.”

With so much at stake, the tension in the air is almost palpable.

Social media such as Twitter and Facebook have become a popular fixture with the association, which McKernon feels brings a younger audience to the WPCA. Look for your favourite drivers on Twitter and interact with them as they make their way through the chuckwagon season.

Being a driver takes more than its fair share of steel and grit. The power of four thoroughbred horses is not taken lightly and a chuckwagon driver has to know his surroundings and what the animals are doing.

“These guys have to know when to let ’em go and when to watch the track,” said McKernon.

Planning for the Ponoka Stampede usually begins a week early and McKernon enjoys the atmosphere that comes with Ponoka. He says it reminds him of when he was a boy.

“It’s like Christmastime for me.

It’s a special time of the year,” he stated.

CHUCKWAGON TARP AUCTION REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

A furious back and forth bidding war between Rusway Construction and Pidherney’s Oilfield Construction caused quite a commotion during the Ponoka Stampede chuckwagon tarp auction May 2 at the Stagecoach Saloon.

Thirty-six chuckwagon racers on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) tour came to Ponoka to vie for best bid during the Ponoka Stampede and tarp auction, which raised $500,000, the second highest the association has seen.

The bid that turned everybody’s head was when Rusway beat out Pidherney’s with a record breaking $51,000 bid giving them the rights to Roger Moore’s chuckwagon.

Pidherney’s was Moore’s sponsor in Ponoka last year but Merv Krauss, of Rusway, made some quick decisions while talking to his business partner, Wayne Russell, over the phone. Krauss said they had their eyes on Moore.

“We were going to buy him,” said Krauss determinedly.

Moore was a little taken aback and couldn’t stop smiling.

“Rusway has backed me 100 per cent for 10 years.”

When the auctioneer yelled a $40,000 bid for Moore, people started to get excited, but they weren’t ready for the record sale that he garnered. Moore was last year’s Ponoka Stampede champion after winning the Tommy Dorchester $50,000 Dash-For-Cash.

There was an air of optimism in the room before the auction even started, possibly due to organizers adding more

said the tarp auction is a much-anticipated day for everyone involved.

“It’s basically the kick off to the Ponoka Stampede,” stated Dodds.

WPCA president Arnold McKernon was uncertain how the night would go as the Calgary Stampede tarp auction was down from last year. Despite the

low sales in Calgary, McKernon feels trends are changing.

“We are at the beginning of a new cycle,” said McKernon.

WPCA on SiriusXM In an effort to reach a broader customer base, the WPCA is breaking new ground over a new contract with SiriusXM satellite radio. Look for channel 80 to catch up on the latest Half Mile of Hell action.

McKernon said the WPCA has new members on its board of directors and he looks forward to seeing what the “new blood” will be able to offer their organization. As technology grows, McKernon suggests planners need to ensure they keep with trends.

“We’re trying to make improvements and all that stuff takes time,” he explained.

BIG AND RICH BRINGS COUNTRYROCK TO STAMPEDE

Country music superstar band Big and Rich is bringing in the big finale of musical entertainment during Ponoka Stampede week.

The highly anticipated concert will take place June 30 on the grandstand stage in the infield, following the chuckwagon performance.

Since the band’s founding in the late 1990s, Big and Rich members Big Kenny and John Rich have released four studio albums and were currently working on their fifth as of last July, as evident by their recently released Look at You. Fans can expect some of their old favorites and biggest hits to be played during the

Stampede concert, as well as a few new songs to keep interest fresh.

The recently nominated ACMA duo, along with making new music they also have their own label: Big And Rich Records.

“2014 is a new milestone for us. We’re completely invigorated to be working with Kobalt and New Revolution and taking this new approach for this exciting album. Country music lovers will have their fair share of musical enjoyment at this year’s Ponoka Stampede.

Besides big stars like Big and Rich and Corb Lund coming to entertain thousands, musicians Jamie Stever and Sarah Beth Keeley are going to keep folks dancing with their modern country music at the beer gardens June 27 and June 28.

Hosted at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex, the arena gets busy during the musical events.

Stampede director Blair Vold is in charge of the entertainment during the Ponoka Stampede week and he says planning starts early in the year to organize entertainment.

Vold works with an agent in Nashville, TN and they try to find the best country musicians every year.

Vold says he tries to look for local artists that will be able to put on a good show at the beer gardens. “They’re always good bands that are up and coming.”

He also looks forward to Big and Rich’s performance this year.

“That’s going to be a huge show here,” stated Vold.

As for infield entertainment, Vold booked Bobby Kerr (story on page 18) who is one of the best horse trainers in the business right now. Vold says Kerr has never been to Alberta and looks forward to seeing his skill in action.

After moving to Calgary, she sang with various house bands and recorded radio commercials. Some of the highlights of her career thus far were having the opportunity to perform with Shania Twain at Rexall place in Edmonton, and also singing with Neil McCoy at the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose. Lisa now resides in Camrose, AB with her husband and two children.

Denver Daines is born and raised country! His many years training horses, riding saddle bronc in the CPRA and PRCA circuits, as well as his life experiences growing up in Central Alberta have given Denver the inspiration to pursue his dream of being a musician. A gifted songwriter and talented singer and entertainer, he has toured extensively and his originals have been well-received by the country music industry, attaining airplay all across Canada. Jessica is 21 years old, with a passion for music; she resides in Blackfalds Alberta with her family. She was inspired to sing by her late Grandmother Agnes, who found immense joy in listening to her sing songs around the house.

Jessica was introduced to the concept of guitar accompaniment by her Aunt Josey McNeill, and has since been called a ‘musical parrot,’ she hasn’t looked back since. Through exposure to bluegrass and old country by her grandfather Mel, she has developed a deep rooted love of old classic country music.

Jessica has taken a break from preforming to finish her degree in Nursing. When she is not working or volunteering, you will find her enjoying one of her favourite pastimes – reading. However, no matter where you see her, at work, or play, she will always have a song on her lips and love in her heart.

My name is Alex Dion and I am from Frog Lake AB but live in Wetaskiwin AB. I started playing guitar at age 14 and have loved the experience of playing for the past 22 years. I am now 36 and I still love music as much as when I was a kid, maybe even more. This is my fifth time playing the Ponoka Stampede showcase and I enjoy the experience as much as my first time playing back in 2006. The Stampede is a great show to play for me because it gives me a chance to meet new musicians and meet new friends, and experience the amazing talent of upcoming musicians. I love the crowd and it is an amazing feeling playing on the same stage that the big acts play on and to play the same stadium as they do. Makes me feel like a star being on that stage, and my goal is just to put a smile on the faces of the crowd who came out. If my performance makes someone feel happy and they leave smiling that is all I can ask for.

Falen Nelson is a very upbeat eleven year old from Cardston, Alberta. She’s a farm girl at heart and enjoys riding, dirt biking, nature, playing guitar and of course singing! Falen’s passion for singing and music began at an early age. She’s always loved to sing for family and friends and decided to take her interest one step further by trying out for the Ponoka Stampede Talent Show this year. She had a blast performing at the auditions and looks forward to the finals!

Michela Sheedy is a 19 year old born and raised in Okotoks, Alberta. Music has been her passion for most of her life. Starting to perform only when she was 11 years old and play guitar when she was 12, her love for music only grows deeper with every song she sings. Michela has competed in the Calgary Stampede Talent Search for 4 years in a row and has made it to the semi finals rounds for the past 2 years. She also has won the Rylies Cattle Bard: Budweiser Series open mic competition which has allowed her to spend some time in the recording studio. She plans to continue with music for the rest of her life and hopes to one day make it a career for herself.

Born, raised, and still residing near Tofield Alberta, Taryn Stauffer developed a passion for music at an early age. Her grandmas love for singing and playing the piano gave her the courage and confidence to be a self-taught player, and though she’s never formally studied music, Taryn plays a variety of instruments all by ear. Her main focus is putting life’s experiences into a musical story. Taryn’s greatest joy would come from sharing songs with family, friends, and the rest of the world, leading to a lifetime involvement with music.

Jadey and Nikale Van Der Vlis Jadey and Nikale, are the youngest of six children and have been immersed in music from a very young age. They each play the guitar, violin and piano and have sang and played music with their siblings at various places and events over the past several years. They are excited for the opportunity to play at the Ponoka Stampede!

Chris Verhaeghe Chris was born in Edmonton but has since lived in all parts of Alberta and currently calls Ponoka his home away from home.

As a granite installer for Ponoka’s-own Classic Granite Works he is everything that rocks (pun very much intended) but when he’s not beautifying counter tops he is rocking out in a whole different kind of way. Most of the time he can be found at the Jolly Farmer Pub performing and hosting open-jam night or in the studio recording new tracks. His sound is raw, untamed, and should not be anywhere near open flames. With a wide variety of music up his sleeve he is sure to have something for everyone to enjoy.

We’re neighbouring farm kids from Bashaw (The Former Cheese Capital Of Western Canada) who had dreams of learning guitar and hitting the road just like some of our heroes- Garth Brooks, AC/DC, ZZ Top, George Strait and the list goes on. The second we were both out of school we decided it was our time, and we struck out to play every dive bar, truck stop, and back alley party within five counties. The road taught us some hard lessons and we think we’ve learned em’ well, but we’ll let you be the judge of that. This is our personal invite to you to come out and burn it down with us on the 26th. BEAUTIFUL LADIES REAP CHARITY FUNDS FOR COMMUNITY CAUSES

Long time running Chicks for Charity fundraiser remains the classiest affair of the Ponoka Stampede as women get dressed up in their finery and open their wallets in the name of women in need.

Live and silent auctions, as well as door and raffle prizes, held at the annual champagne breakfast create proceeds which are given to a number of charities within the community as well as the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter.

STAMPEDE SHOW ATTRACTS TALENT FROM ALL AROUND ALBERTA

Another year, another batch of country talent ripe for the listening.

This year’s Ponoka Stampede talent show received close to 70 hopeful entries. “This is the most we’ve ever had,” said master of ceremonies Keith Kjenner.

“This is definitely a high number,” agreed his wife and organizer Karen Kjenner.

The top 14 were chosen to perform on the grand stage with a live band during Stampede week beginning June 26. Among the contestants are: Alex Dion, Wetaskiwin; Taryn Stauffer, Tofield; Jess St. Dennis, Blackfalds; Ty Wilson, Bashaw; Lisa Adamson, Camrose; Cole Malone, Innisfail; Fred Wortley, Lacombe; Falen Nelson, Cardston; Denver Daines, Innisfail; Annette from Ponoka; Michela Sheedy, Okotoks; Chris Verhaeghe, Ponoka; Bradley Abel, Red Deer; and Jadey and Nikale Van der Viis of Rocky Mountain House.

The judges this year were David Gilmore of Gilmore Guitars, radio personality Chantelle J and Stacey Roper of Hey Romeo.

“Between the three of them, they’ve got over 100 years of combined experience,” said Keith.

The judges were tasked with the daunting job of choosing the best performers from the large pool of applicants, which included aspiring singers as young as eight, self taught vocalists and guitar players and a number of original songs.

“The amount of talent here just blew my mind,” said Roper.

“I’ve got so many close scores on that score sheet that I actually don’t know how I’m going to narrow it down,” Chantelle J added.

a total package to make it to Stampede week. This includes a good voice, but also stage presence, and a polished act. “It’s not all about the talent, its everything combined,” said Chantelle J. “I think it’s going to be a great show. I think the people chosen are going to put on a great show,” said Gilmore.

“There was a lot of really good (singers), there was a couple of standouts,” he added.

Roper used to be one of the musicians that backed up the top contestants of the talent show and she feels singers are getting better from when she was involved in that role. “This level of competition did not occur at that point. You could almost hire any of these people for a gig.”

This is Chantelle J’s second year as a judge and she says she’s miles ahead this year in terms of what to expect and what excites her. “For me, it’s the idea that we can find the next musical artist.

I also really enjoy that it’s a chance to showcase what we have to offer.”

“I love seeing young people becoming artists.

My favourite part is seeing where they go in their careers,” added Roper.

The prizes awarded to the two winners vary this year from what they have been in the recent past.

Dwayne Steele has normally been a part of the prize package, offering up his time in a writing session. However, previous engagements are keeping him away this year. “Dwayne has had a wonderful relationship with the contestants. It’s worked really, really well,” said Keith.

Stepping into Steele’s shoes is singer-songwriter Jake Mathews. Along with the writing session the prize pool includes a $3,000 Gilmore guitar and a full day of recording with MCC Studio.

By June 25, Ponoka will be flooded with Wild West outlaws ripe for roundup, and that is exactly what Ponoka RCMP and ATB Financial intend do to.

The sixth annual ATB Outlaw roundup will commence during the Ponoka News pancake breakfast held on Chipman (50th) Avenue, complete with a jail cell.

The Outlaw Roundup is a charity event that raises thousands of dollars each year for a local charity, project or organization. In previous years, the fundraiser has helped support the Ponoka Youth Centre, Victim Services, the Splash Park, Broncs football team, and Ponoka’s KidSport chapter. Over the last five years, more than $91,000 has been raised.

This year the proceeds are being given to Ponoka Minor Soccer Association for an enhancement project on some of the pitches in town.

“It’s really fantastic for us (ATB Financial) to be able to help community organizations so they can build in the community,” said ATB organizer Sharon McLennan.

She said multiple groups applied for the chance to partake in the Outlaw Roundup this year, but ATB Financial tries to choose the organization it feels will have the largest impact on the community as a whole.

With better soccer pitches, the

town will have the opportunity to host more tournaments, including provincials, bringing more commerce to Ponoka; more people “Seeing our great town and seeing what we have to offer here,” said McLennan.

“We’ve got a great community, and the soccer pitches . . . it’s a big project and the intent is to build lights and seating,” she added.

Ten outlaws will be rounded up this year and locked in “jail” with a cell phone, seeking pledges until they have garnered enough funds to be released. In the past individuals have raised as much as $3,000.

PONOKA’S COWBOYS, COWGIRLS TAKE ON PONOKA STAMPEDE

While Ponoka Stampede week is a time for the world’s best cowboys and cowgirls to flock to town in hopes of nabbing themselves a championship title, the Ponoka community has a large crop of well known and local favourites to look up every year.

From barrel racers to bronc riders, Ponoka has produced a number of professional rodeoers, and many others have moved here from elsewhere to remain close to the rodeo action of Alberta’s culture.

Ponoka’s own Jake Vold, the bareback champion of last year’s Ponoka Stampede, is back again to no one’s surprise, and he’s been having a great year with large amounts already won.

Vold grew up watching the cowboys compete and transitioning into the role was a natural fit for him. In the past, he’s named the Ponoka Stampede his favourite rodeo to ride in.

Another local competitor is barrel racer Cranna Roberts, who’s been having a few concerns this year with horses. However, like the tough cowgirl she is, that isn’t going to keep her from going to the glory.

The equine rehabilitation and fitness specialist has been competing in the Ponoka Stampede since 2006, but was a member of the grand entry between the years of 1995 and 2002.

RODEO HALL OF FAMERS HONOURED IN PONOKA

Of the six professional Canadian cowboys inducted into the Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame (CPRHF) this year, two are being honoured during the Ponoka Stampede.

Contestants Lee Laskosky, steer wrestling, and Viola Thomas, barrel racing, have both chosen Ponoka as the place they would like to be honoured. CPRHF director Brenda Vold says inductees usually pick a rodeo location that has special meaning to them and Ponoka is that place for Laskosky and Thomas.

Laskosky has several Canadian steer wrestling championships under his belt with many buckles and saddles won along the way, explained Vold. “He had an outstanding rodeo career.”

Laskosky won the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) finals in 1984 and 1986.

To make it to the distinguished list of hall of famers, the CPRHF must first pass a majority vote of seven out of 10 on a candidate. Vold says there used to be some long nights between the board members because they do not stop voting until they come to a majority consensus.

Thomas is a barrel racer who won three barrel racing championships at the CPRA finals; 1958, 1959 and 1961.

Laskosky and Thomas will both be in Ponoka June 30 at the Ponoka Stampede infield to accept their induction.

Also inducted this year were contestants Darrell Cholach and Dave Garstad and builder Neil McKinnon and bareback horse Chester Skoal.

Organizing the Stampede Parade is almost a full time job and Ponoka Stampede Association director Greg Gordon says he enjoys the excitement that comes with the many different parade floats.

This year’s parade marshals are going to be the World Professional Chuckwagon Association drivers, states Gordon. “It’s just fun putting it all together.”

Coming into his 13th year with the parade, Gordon has a crew of volunteers who ensure operations run smoothly on the big day. About TH 50 people help out.

“They’ve all been there since I’ve been there.”

Gordon enjoys seeing the floats that honour the western heritage with stagecoaches and cowboys. “The older the better I like. And noise, lots of noise.”

Representatives from municipalities such as Lacombe, Blackfalds, Clive and Alix come to meet and greet parade attendees. Wetaskiwin MP Blaine Calkins enjoys seeing so many people from his area.

Pancake breakfasts have become a regular fixture during Ponoka Stampede week and this year there are four being hosted by different businesses.

Folks looking for a good morning meal can find many fixins’ such as pancakes, sausages, coffee and juice, plus all the syrup and butter a person can handle.

Probably one of the most anticipated pancake breakfasts is the Ponoka News one held on Chipman Avenue June 25. This breakfast as well as the ATB Outlaw Roundup fundraiser, draws many people to the downtown area. (See page 34 for the Outlaw Roundup story).

The following day’s breakfast is hosted by UFA Farm Stores and Cervus Equipment in the Southwest Industrial Park.

There is a two-day break from pancakes but then organizers kick into high gear again June 29 at the Stampede Grandstands.

fast being so close to the Stampede campgrounds and is held at the same time as the Cowboy’s Church Service. Attendees can listen to some cowboy gospel music and if they’re lucky, they might even see the morning slack runs of bulldogging (steer wrestling), tie down roping and team roping.

The last pancake breakfast is July 1, Canada Day, and is held again in the Southwest Industrial Park by Gemini Corporation. Time for all the breakfasts are from 8 to 11 a.m.
