Business is booming at the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market.

But somewhere between the hustling crowds, locally grown produce and handmade goods, internal controversy and public confusion over the market’s future grew.

They’re issues the newest market president is trying to put to rest.

Martin Miller took the helm of the market early in the season. He replaced Rachelle Zelaney, a board member who had been thrust into the position mere weeks earlier when the previous president stepped down amid controversy over a potential new home in the north end of the city.

As that issue continued to play out, Miller became the market’s new voice— a firmly anti “industrial area” voice. “We are not moving to that spot (on Clement Avenue)” said Miller, speaking on behalf of all vendors.

“The old board stepped down and we have a new board, and we have decided we will stay (in this area), for sure.”

From his 45 years of experience in the farmers’ market loop, Martin has come to believe that moving far away from where people recognize the market to be would be detrimental to overall success.

“We know it wouldn’t work. They have done this in Winnipeg and Wenatchee, Washington, and they have huge problems,” he said.

The current location—a parking lot across from the Orchard Park mall—isn’t going to be a forever-home for vendors, as the market society can only secure a year-to-year lease with the mall. “The major thing is that we get a new site, a prominent location. That’s one of the hardest parts,” said Martin.

In the next couple of weeks, Miller said that there may be an answer to questions about where the market will eventually wind up, but the cat may have been let out of the bag in Kelowna city council chambers on Monday.

After first saying new federally-approved commercial medical marijuana production in Kelowna would only be allowed on industrial land, city council has given initial approval to an expansion of its bylaw to allow

such facilities on agricultural land.

But while council is following a policy advisory set out by the Agricultural Land Commission, approval from the city under its new zoning rules for such facilities will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Kelowna RCMP arrest small town murder suspect

Some of the mystery lingering over a 2011 gangland style killing in Blind Bay was lifted at a Kelowna press conference Monday morning, where Mounties announced a significant break in the case.

Williams Lake resident Jeremy Wayne Davis, 24, and Mission resident Jordan Larry Barnes, 27, were arrested last week and now each face a charge of second degree murder for the death of a Sorrento man, Nicholas Cole Larsen.

“The Southeast District Major Crime Unit led the investigation which determined that Larsen, 24, was shot while travelling in a friend’s vehicle in what appeared to be a targeted attack,” said Insp.

In the investigation into who killed Larsen and what their motivation may have been June 1, 2011, it was revealed that there had been a dispute in Sorrento between two groups of men a couple of hours before the shooting.

At some point after that argument, the vehicle in which Larsen was riding was forced off the road by another vehicle also travelling on Blind Bay Road, said Kohlhauser.

An occupant of the suspect vehicle then allegedly opened fire and multiple bullets riddled the vehicle in which Larsen was riding.

The man who loved ones described as a “big guy with a big heart” was hit several times and succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter on a nearby friend’s property.

Kohlhauser said that one of the two men arrested this week was an acquaintance of Larsen, but didn’t identify which one. He also wouldn’t go into the nature of the argument between the parties involved.

He did say the crime was not gang related, despite appearances otherwise.

Rumours that the crime was motivated by the drug trade were also not addressed.

Although the arrest can’t dull the pain of losing their son, Shelley and Bo Larsen said news of the arrest brought them the feelings of “peace and elation” for the first time in three years. It did not, however, bring forgiveness for those accused.

Bo Larsen offered thanks to the investigative team that made the arrests, as well as the community for supporting the family as they dealt with their loss.

“This has been a long, long journey, and I’ve seen the pain in my family’s eyes and felt it in their hearts,” said Bo Larsen.

He previously described his son to the Salmon Arm Observer as a “big guy, with a big heart.”

“He was a very sensitive guy, very sensitive and trusting. So much so that you’d have to talk to him, tell him that not everyone’s the same, that people can take advantage. Everyone else always came first with him,” he said in 2011.

Bo said his son loved animals and the outdoors, but his first priority was his family.

He had a special fondness for his young nieces, liking to spoil them with presents and outings.

“He was loved by all. His humour and personality were next to none. I’ve never known him to go out and harm someone. I don’t care who you talk to, they’ll tell you the same thing.”

Davis, who was arrested in Williams Lake, was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday in a Kamloops courtroom.

Barnes, who was arrested in Kelowna the day after Davis was apprehended, was also scheduled to answer to the charges on Monday. kmichaels@kelownacapnews.com

As she grows up, Keyara Coble will never struggle with unanswered questions about who she is or where she comes from.

As the two-yearold ambled around the Sncəwips Heritage Museum during its official opening Saturday, her dad explained how his work is aimed at putting an often misunderstood part of Okanagan history in the spotlight so it will be well represented to her and future generations. “(First Nation people) have a language, we have a culture, we have a history, and it predates settlement, it predates the reservation systems and our current leadership structure with the chief and council system,” said Jordan Coble, curatorial and

heritage researcher for WFN. “And we’re still here and representing ourselves in a good way.”

Coble, alongside Tracy Satin, the museum’s heritage officer and curator, have been hard at work preserving the history of the WFN, as well as Okanagan Nation and First Nations people across Canada in the lead up to the grand opening.

But, as those who visit the warmly coloured rooms in the museum will learn, their work has a wider range than that of many of their contemporaries.

“Museums across Canada talk about First Nation cultures as if they’re in the past, as though they’re extinct already,” Coble said.

We want to eliminate the stigma of the prehistoric native people who wandered these lands. “ Members of the public are invited to discover a main gallery, a rotating exhibition, a reading room and an educational room, complete with a chalkboard wall, which will be ideal for hosting small groups.

Coble stressed that the museum isn’t just for WFN members.

Non-members who live on reserve, residents of greater Kelowna, the Okanagan Valley and the Syilx territory as a whole are all invited to visit.

The museum is in Estates Square off Old Okanagan Highway in West Kelowna.

Council amends marijuana growing bylaw

marijuana production bylaw, council appeared to have a change of heart and asked staff to report back on allowing some production on agricultural land.

On Monday, city planner Shelley Gambacourt told council the rules for considering a federally-approved commercial medical marijuana growing operation would include limiting the lot coverage to just 10 per cent of the site.

There would, how-

ever, be the opportunity to seek a variance to that.

City Coun. Andre Blanleil said he liked the 10 per cent lot coverage rule and the fact a variance could be requested.

“It gives an opportunity for staff and council to sit down with the applicant and have a fresh look at (the proposal),” he said.

Blanleil added he considered the 10 per cent rule a “tool” the city could use in getting the best proposals possible.

Earlier this year, a change to federal rules

went into effect that said only Health Canada-approved commercial applicants can get licences to produce medical marijuana in Canada.

Prior to that, licences could be acquired by individuals growing in their own homes.

While the question of who gets a licence will be up to Ottawa, the municipal government can set its own rules for zoning.

But while it will have say over where the facilities are located here, Gambacourt said the city

will not have any say over what the buildings look like.

That raised a level of concern for Coun. Gail Given, who said she was worried after seeing a picture of a possible design that, she said, looked like a concrete “bunker.”

Only a handful of licences to produce medical marijuana have been handed out so far by Heath Canada across the country and the city says, to date as far as it knows, none have been awarded here.

A zoning amendment that would allow for a new public market at the southeast corner of Springfield and Benvoulin roads was given the go-ahead by city councillors during their regular meeting.

As outlined in municipal documents, the Mission Crossing project would offer a year-round home for local agricultural related enterprises.

The 97,000-square foot market would consist of several large buildings that look like barns, farmhouses, and stables, set in a walkable space.

The plans for the “Granville Island-style market” aren’t new. The Mission Crossing project first came to the fore three years ago, but was bogged down by requirements set by the Agricultural Land Commission.

The developer asked the ALC for changes to those requirements in April, and got the go-ahead, allowing for forward momentum with this incarnation of the project.

The question that lingers is whether the farmers’ market vendors will move to the space. They could vote against it, just as they voted against taking the Clement Avenue space, much to the surprise of the board at that time.

Or, as Coun. Robert Hobson pointed out, split interests among vendors could create trouble if both market-style ventures go ahead on opposite ends of the city.

“I’ve been noting with interest the issues facing Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market,” he said. “I love the [proposed] one downtown, I have to admit, but this [Springfield] is the area where a lot of people want to be.

“I wish them every success, but I’m a little unhappy to see the break up in the organization of farmers and crafters. If they don’t pull together, none of these groups may succeed.”

For his part, Mayor Walter Gray said that Kelowna is ready for more projects of that nature, noting that with city infrastructure woven into the picture, one could eventually use the local bike paths to cycle to get their groceries. “It’s kind of European,” he said. kmichaels@kelownacapnews.com

BCTF president Jim Iker said Monday morning a complete strike is “imminent,” after union members endorsed the move in their second province-wide strike vote.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said Monday he is waiting for a response from the union to the latest offer from BCPSEA, which represents the province’s 60 school districts.

BCPSEA chief negotiator Peter Cameron said Monday he still does not have a full position from the BCTF that clarifies the status of the union’s “truckload of benefit proposals.”

Cameron said the union’s latest wage offer is a reduction from its previous position, but when increased benefit costs are

factored in, it is still more than twice as much compensation as other public sector union settlements.

BCPSEA posted a comparison of the two wage offers Monday.

It describes the BCTF proposal as a $5,000 signing bonus followed by increases of 3.5% in the first year and 1.5% in each of the next three years, for a total raise of 8% plus compounding.

BCPSEA’s latest offer includes a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by the end of the school year, and a series of wage increases up to May 2019 that includes “economic stability dividend” amounts depending on B.C.’s economic performance. “(BCPSEA) tabled a comprehensive settlement that includes an improved wage offer and commits to realistic and flexible solutions to address class composition,” Fassbender said.

The B.C. Labour Relations Board has extended its essential services order to include provincial final exams and marks for graduating students, so they can apply for post-secondary studies.

B.C. has three new trades, those attending the national groundwater biannual conference at the Delta Grand Hotel learned last week.

With the death of the National Ground Water Association in 2013—it went bankrupt after becoming embroiled in a lawsuit—geotechnical experts were at a loss to certify some of the tradesmen and women needed to drill wells, drill geothermal exchange holes and provide some of the other geotechnical drilling expertise needed in this province.

“We recently developed a relationship with the Industry Training Authority, so that now we can certify these trades in this province,” said Bruce Ingimundson, managing director of the British Columbia Groundwater Association.

This is a very important year for groundwater in B.C. as the province has finally put legal controls on water beneath the Earth’s surface, bringing B.C. in line with every other province and 48 of the 51 States to have groundwater legislation.

“It really puts guidelines and regulations on volume,” said Ingimundson, noting it’s not targeted at the family farm.

“When you cannot take more creek water or lake water you go underground,” Ingimundson explained. It has been sucking some acquifers dry.

The Okanagan, the Gulf Islands and the Fraser Valley have been particularly prone to development pressure and the legislation, not to mention the trained tradespeople to ensure jobs are done properly, should start to put protections in place to deal with the water cycle as a whole, rather than simply surface water.

It is likely to have implications for oil and gas, should the industry spread further into B.C., stemming the tide of damage done by fracking operations to ensure pristine water remains for human consumption and saline or recycled water is directed to industry use.

Last year the Regional District and Central Okanagan Land Trust (COLT) announced their partnership in protecting 323-hectares of land donated to COLT from the estate of Alfred and Nancy Johns, protecting it as an undeveloped park for wildlife. These lands along the South Slopes were combined with the almost 80-hectares of Cedar Mountain Regional Park just off Chute Lake Road for the new Johns Family Park.

In respecting the wishes of the Johns family, the proposed recommendations set out a long-term vision for the park and establish the goals and standards under which the regional district will operate, manage and steward the habitat values of these ecologically significant lands, while providing educational and recreational outdoor experiences.

The district is looking to create a sustainable balance between habitat and wildlife protection and access to the lands.

Talbott’s adventures are worth a dollar or two of their own money to see shared.

“It is pretty cool.

When we learned about that we were pretty stoked,” said Nault.

Talbott is a commercial photographer with a keen interest in nature and he’s travelled the globe shooting in wild enough spaces it caught Nault’s eye.

“I have a lot on my bucket list, but I’ve seen pretty much everywhere in North America, including the Caribbean, and I just finished my fifth Asia trip,” said Talbott, when

asked about his travels.

As one of the most industrious shooters in the area, his work has earned him top contracts, but also the eye of the general public.

He was voted Best Photographer in the Best of Kelowna awards this month, without campaigning.

He doesn’t know who nominated him and he refused to let himself make public pleas for votes— save his initial acknowledgement.

The 1 Stop Closer series will be available at 1stopcloser.com come July 10 and the project is

still collecting a bit of topup funding to help finance a trip to the Great Bear Rainforest for the final episode of the series.

KickStarter only collects funds if the target goal is reached and a portion goes back to the company.

Added gas tax will be a hard sell

ast Thursday’s announcement from the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation in the Loser Mainland, outlining plans for a $7.5 billion transit and congestion relief capital plan, is ambitious, but it could be achieved.

The plan is the first concrete action from mayors to actually recognize the transit shortfall in the South Fraser region. At the same time, it calls for upgrades to transit service in areas where it is already pretty good.

Overall, the plan calls for a

25 per cent increase in bus service and 400 new buses.

The big challenge with this plan is how to get voters to agree with the mayors’ ideas of how to pay for it.

They propose tapping into the provincial carbon tax, but that is a non-starter.

Their backup plan is to add a new regional carbon tax of about 5.5 cents per litre to the cost of gas. At the same time, there would be no reductions in Port Mann or Golden Ears bridge tolls. In fact, they want

to add a toll on a new Pattullo Bridge. They are prepared to reduce the TransLink gas tax to 11 cents per litre from 17 cents, but only after road pricing has been added, which is likely at least eight years away.

So the price of gas would rise by 5.5 cents per litre soon, and (perhaps) be cut by six cents at some distant point, when that revenue is replaced by road pricing. When TransLink boosted gas taxes by two cents to 17 cents per litre, to pay for the Evergreen Line, the effect was

instant and dramatic. People fi were leaving the suburbs to buy L gas south of the border or furp ther up the Fraser Valley.

Ontario’s provincial election has lessons for B.C.

“L

iberal” is becoming one of the most ill-defined words in Canadian politics.

Here in B.C., a Liberal is a Conservative, or at least a fiscal conservative, bent on balancing budgets and battling big unions to force them to recognize today’s world of low growth and low inflation.

In Ottawa, a Liberal is currently whatever Justin Trudeau wakes up and decides. One day he’s a libertarian who wants to legalize marijuana, and the next he’s in touch with his inner Taliban, issuing a moral edict on abortion.

In Ontario, Premier Kathleen Wynne saved her gut-shot Liberal

government by limping to the left of the NDP, promising to spend lots more borrowed money and build lots of transit.

This is in a havenot province with an operating deficit that is currently running north of $12 billion.

For comparison purposes, B.C.’s deficit swelled briefly beyond $3 billion in the wake of the Great Recession of 2009, and the books stayed in the red until last year as the B.C. Liberals unwound the Harmonized Sales Tax and repaid a $1.6 billion HST transfer al-

lowance to Ottawa.

The gas plants were to stabilize erratic output from wind and solar power, a European-style climate change gesture that involved Ontario ratepayers giving a huge subsidy to Korean tech giant Samsung.

power in part by promising a provincial pension scheme on the same scale as the Canada Pension Plan.

B.C. has a similar pension program in the works, to be offered to the two thirds of small business and self-employed people who don’t have a group plan with their employer.

Ours would, of course, be voluntary.

Not so in Ontario, where large and small businesses will be required to cough up half of the required pension payments.

The Ontario model is dumb on several levels. It is to be imposed just as the baby boom retirement wave breaks across Canada’s most populous province, increasing risk that

the pension pool may run dry. And it sticks small business with a new payroll tax in a province that has lost much of its traditional manufacturing base and needs to innovate.

Here’s the funny part, if you don’t live in Ontario. Wynne tabled her spending-spree, deficit-be-damned budget in an effort to convince the NDP to keep propping up the Liberal minority government and avoid an election.

Shameful treatment of migrant workers

To the editor: Re: Summer Marks Fresh Fruit Season Across the Okanagan, June 12 Capital News.

I really enjoyed Norm Letnick’s prosaic update on agriculture. [Kelowna-Lake Country MLA and B.C.’s Minister of Agriculture.]

I’m a creative writer too, but perhaps such fictional pieces are better suited for the Arts & Life section.

Where did you stroll, Norm, to pick that peach? It wasn’t picked for you, by someone living in Third World conditions within the community you’re paid to represent? Conditions, readers, which would bring you to tears if I could share workers’ stories without fear of them being deported and blacklisted by farm owners reaping the boasted profits.

Abuse, rape, neglect, hunger, persecution, isolation, separation from family- Sorrows Norm will never experience while spending his $101,859 per annum salary us taxpayers provide for his services (heck, I’ll do it for free).

He quoted some impressive figures, but his business trips don’t benefit us. My bank saccount dwindles, my bills are increasing and

I cry daily reading about the factory and farm conditions my fellow working class Chinese endure to support the global economy the Liberals feel so optimistic about.

Upper class Americans and Asians enjoy our fruit, while real locals can only afford the poor quality produce sent here.

How can the Liberals claim they “support agriculture and the people who work in it,” and support Bill 24? How can they call farm workers “temporary migrants”, when some workers spend eight months of the year here, and have done so for over a decade?

There’s a man who has spent more time in the Valley than me, yet this is the first year a Canadian invited him into their home to share a meal. I burn with shame, considering the hospitality shown when I worked abroad, and how we make fools of ourselves while vacationing in his country. He will spend Fathers’ Day alone, because our laws ban his wife and children from visiting. He cannot find solace at Church, because we don’t provide services in the language he prays in.

Do you vote right wing for religious reasons? Jesus wouldn’t shrug and continue to

buy cheap food because it’s so darn convenient. He would be fighting alongside me for universal human dignity, despite what people think or fear of death.

Community is a word cheapened during elections, but I believe in it religiously. Local food should be served to the hands that grow it and residents from all classes. Community can’t thrive if my generation is turned into migrant workers too, because we can’t find education, health, or trades jobs in our hometowns that pay enough to free us from debt. It won’t grow if you have to travel to the UAE or Asia to visit your grandchildren. It will die if our fathers and partners are absent because they have no choice but to work on the rigs.

I’m a landless food grower, but I’ve lost my appetite knowing the heartaches of those who grow food locally and internationally.

Teachers ‘undervalued’ by Clark government collaborated with families, other teaching staff, including CUPE workers, medical professionals, Social Services, church groups, police, probation, volunteers and a host of like-minded groups and individuals. Each participant has brought caring and expertise to the table.

However, efforts have

been thwarted and the legs have been cut off from our table. Without government support the table is off balance.

The continued underfunding of programs and the undervaluing of teachers has created a culture that is undermining one of our core values, that children are a priority and the

future of our ‘community.’

It is evident in this current labor dispute our community finds the lack of government support unconscionable.

Government needs to come to the table with the best interests of children and the community as their focus. Christy Clark

Greenway underExpressing creativity important as we age passes closed ▼ CONSCIOUS ELDERING

Once again rising spring water levels have forced the closure of two underpasses along the Mission Creek Greenway.

The trails under the Casorso Road Bridge and on the south side of Mission Creek at the Gordon Drive Bridge are closed until further notice.

Flows and water levels have risen sharply due to upper elevation snow melt and heavy recent rainfalls.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan urges Greenway users to respect the barricades and signs posted along the recreational trail as the underpass will remain closed until waters recede.

Pedestrians and cyclists should use caution and only cross Casorso Road and Gordon Drive when it is safe.

Motorists are also asked to watch for Greenway users.

Regional parks staff is continuing to monitor creek levels. Water levels may rise unexpectedly and trail users, children and pets should stay safely back from creek banks, which may be slippery or subject to erosion.

Boaters and those using Okanagan Lake boat launches are advised to watch for floating debris that may enter the lake as a result of the runoff. Please keep wakes down near shore to reduce wave-action erosion.

A reminder that the Lakeshore Road access to the Mission Creek Greenway is closed until November for construction of the Lakeshore Road upgrade. Trail users must turnaround near the construction site and return toward Gordon Drive.

wonderful movement is afoot in our community to bring a new vision to aging, called conscious eldering or ‘sageing.’

There are a growing number of people here in Kelowna who are aspiring to share the hope and encouragement that comes with seeking new ways to grow in consciousness as we age, to feel greater self appreciation, and to be of service to others.

Exploring one’s creative spirit is one way that offers us an opportunity to open up to exciting new possibilities, to stay engaged and passionate about our lives, no matter how many candles there are on our birthday cake.

Karen Close is an artful creator and editor of the on-line quarterly journal Sage-ing with Creative Spirit, Grace and Gratitude, produced here in Kelowna by senior volunteers. Karen also teaches the heART Fit program at the Rotary Centre of the Arts, which is a group that gathers weekly to practice “spontaneous process painting.”

“Everyone has the urge to create. Its expression may flow through many channels: through writing, art or music, through the inventiveness of work or in any number of ways unique to all of us, whether it be cooking, gardening or the art of social discourse,” wrote Dr. Mate.

“The point is to honour the urge. To do so is healing for ourselves and for others; not to do so deadens our bodies and our spirits.”

This doesn’t change as we age. In fact, it seems even more important to nurture its awareness.

I had the privilege of

meeting and talking to a shining example of an elder with indelible creative spirit this past week.

Audrey Fraser, who is soon to turn 98 years of age, had honoured me with a phone call some months back to encourage me on how my writings spoke to her and aligned with how she was feeling about wanting to keep engaged with life.

Another call recently from her daughter, Wendy, prompted me to make a visit to find out more about this incredible woman who still lives in her own home, volunteers weekly at the Cancer Centre and remains actively engaged in living her life with passion and creativity.

“My mom is an incredible hula dancer,” Wendy told me enthusiastically as we spoke. “She just did a performance at my sister’s wedding in Los Angeles and all who saw it thought there was a star in the making.”

When I arrived for our meeting, I was greeted at the door by a vision of loveliness, dressed in beautiful Hawaiian attire with a colourful flower in her hair and lei to match.

We sat and talked for

a couple of hours about her approach to life and the many transitions she has witnessed and moved through.

Audrey describes herself as a natural born listener and she seems truly interested in the story that each person has to share. Staying engaged with life through giving to those that need her gentle warmth over at the centre, she says gives her a deep sense of gratitude for her good health and an awareness of the blessings she has in her life.

This attitude of gratitude certainly looks marvellous on her.

I asked her if she would be so kind as to do a little hula for me.

On went her CD player and she began to move her arms and hips with a flow that any 20-year-old would envy. What I immediately felt was the joy that this gave her and the connection that formed between us as I also began to dance and join in the story she was telling with her hands.

A smile that lit up her entire being was contagious and with all else forgotten, I became lost in the soothing sounds of the Hawaiian song and the

delightful glint in Audrey’s eyes.

What more can I say?

She’s unbelievable.

I think what is so important is having the opportunity to share our gifts with others. It is in the connection that forms through that giving and receiving that truly lifts the spirit.

My visit with Audrey helped me to remember the joy I used to feel through my own love of dancing and how moving to music just plain makes you feel happy.

I hope you will take the time to stop by this event on Friday and get back in touch with your own creative spirit through the sights, sounds, exhibitions and performances that will be there for the taking.

You might even catch Audrey and I doing the hula around my exhibition table. It will be our big smiles that you can’t miss.

BRIEFS Joint venture into tech video market

Yeti Farm Creative and Nucleus Strategies, both of Kelowna, launched a new joint venture called Zarf!

The first company of its kind in the B.C. interior, Zarf! combines the animation chops of Yeti Farm Creative with the strategic branding and communications experience of Nucleus Strategies.

This new company specializes in creating short animated videos that explain what companies and/ or their products do.

Simply put, they take great ideas and turn them into great stories.

Yeti Farm owners Ashley and Todd Ramsay and Nucleus Strategies owner Sean Shepherd have shared a workspace for the past year and a half and collaborated on a number of projects before deciding to formalize their relationship.

“After working together on a few videos we realized there is a market, particularly in the tech community, looking for higher calibre videos that are clear, concise and connect with their customers,” said Ramsay.

“So we decided to make it official and created Zarf!”

Shepherd explains the company name comes from a zarf being a holder, usually of ornamental metal, for a coffee cup without a handle.

The word was popularized in Turkey around the 13th century when coffee became fashionable as a beverage.

Usually served through a complex and highly ritualized process, coffee was served in small cups without handles that were placed in holders known as zarf (from the Arabic meaning container, envelope) to protect the cup and also the fingers of the drinker from the hot liquid.

“We consider our videos to serve a similar function as the original holders,” added Shepherd.

“Our Zarf acts as an intermediary between our clients’ product and the consumer, helping to facilitate consumption comfortably and with great enjoyment.”

Organic produce growth spurs hunt for land Now in year two as the owner of Old Meadows Organic Farm, Jeff Ricketts is looking to expand his footprint.

Picking blackberries isn’t painful at Old Meadows Organic Farm.

You just arrive, skip the brambles, the hidden hornets’ nests and a chance tumble into a crag of ugly branches, and pick up a cache of juicy goodness at the market out front.

For Coastal expatriates, it’s a slice of heaven when the season arrives— and these berries are juicier than the wild.

“People want a lot of strawberries and blackberries and even raspberries because they know they get sprayed quite heavily,” said Jeff Ricketts, a.k.a. Farmer Jeff. “A lot of the stuff that comes up from Vancouver has been heavily sprayed and people want fresh produce.

“You get a strawberry that’s perfectly red, that deep colour where if it sits on the plant for two more hours it might start to turn all jammy, and you know it’s been picked at the right time. When you buy farm fresh, you get a better product.”

Unfortunately, the young farmer, 28 years old and in his second year owning the business, has already schooled more customers than he can serve.

Over the winter he was busy scoping out land to expand. With five fulltime employees, three acres and an ability to forge partnerships to draw other local producers in to sell out of his shop, Ricketts has Old Meadows really hopping.

“It seemed like endless work last year, but after one year, it’s already more manageable,” he said.

Buying Old Meadows took serious risk. For several years, Ricketts battled through a career in finance, weathering the stress of a job he loved in day trading until the 2008 crash and subsequent ventures into bank-

“When you’re young, you always think of a career and you think you should be doing that and you’re not really doing it because you want to,” he said.

As his zeal for the vocation waned, his interest in eating organic flourished. Watching family members develop illnesses, he converted to organic produce, discovering along the way that buying directly from the farm was more economical and enjoyable.

When he finally hit the tipping point on his financial advising career, he turned to the newspaper and found Old Meadows Farm was looking for help. Owner Jim Wood quickly turned him loose to weed the strawberry field, bringing new meaning to

the Beatles words, strawberry fields forever.

“I had this huge strawberry patch with all these weeds out there and it was horrifying. I got going, started pulling them and pretty soon I was so relaxed because I didn’t have to worry ‘Is someone losing their money?’ or, ‘Can they afford this sale?’”

Worry free, Ricketts slept all night and within a few days he was turning over the rest of his summer, free of charge, volunteering in the business to convince Wood he was the right person to assume the reins when he sold.

Organic produce is a growth industry, in his view. Certified Organic BC’s research indicates 58 per cent of Canadians are purchasing organic food weekly and two-thirds of British Columbians buy organic groceries weekly.

Capitalizing on that market has not proven difficult. Producing every-

thing from mustard greens to cauliflower, chard and stevia, Ricketts doesn’t need more products—he needs more volume.

By successfully leveraging his Facebook page with reams of Instagram photos, he has unearthed a very loyal customer base. Tourism Kelowna and the Central Okanagan Development Commission have helped him analyze his growth potential, develop the business plan and connect with the chefs and blog writers to really help him hone in on keen consumers.

Now open at his Gordon Drive location, just past Old Meadows Road, he has produce in store and is accepting orders online (oldmeadowsorganics.com).

Downtown Kelowna stores ready to offer new experience Barry Gerding EDITOR

This summer is going to be a “game changer” for Kelowna’s downtown core.

And the Downtown Kelowna Association wants to kick off what is anticipated to be a busy summer with a Small Shop at Night promo on Thursday, from 4 to 9 p.m.

Following on the Small Shop Saturday model that the DKA runs three times a year, more

than 100 businesses have signed on to stay open later on Thursday, offering special sales, product demonstrations and discounts.

Peggy Athans, executive director of the Downtown Kelowna Association, says the event is the outcome of two factors.

One is reflected in a recent study by Roger Brooks, an expert of tourism and community branding, which found that 70 per cent of all consumer retail spending

takes place after 6 p.m.

“Canadians are moving towards the European standard of dining and shopping later in the evening,” Athans said.

The second factor is helping to illustrate why the downtown core is a fun place to shop and also just to hang out.

“People want to come for the experience of being downtown, which can mean eating out at a restaurant, shopping or just hanging out on a patio enjoying a glass of wine,” Athans said.

With the Bernard Avenue upgrade now com-

plete, Athans said the impact of that project is already being felt.

“The wider sidewalks are encouraging more people to come downtown, and the number of outdoor patios has gone from 25 last year to 50 this summer,” Athans said.

She also cited other positive additions such as the construction of the new Kelowna Yacht Club, which will include a Cactus Club restaurant, new beer institute opened by Tree Brewing at the Delta Grand business complex fronting on Water Street and the new pier ex-

tension by Kerry Park extending over Okanagan Lake.

And she says the promise of the new downtown hotel adjacent to Kerry Park is a reason for further optimism.

Athans said the trend across North America is for people wanting to go downtown for a cultural experience, something you can’t find inside a shopping mall.

“You tend to go to a mall for certain reasons, but they are not the places you got to just to hang out,” she said.

“That kind of out-

door lifestyle experience a downtown core like ours can offer can’t be mimicked inside a mall.”

While there has been some reluctance to have night shopping promotions in the past, she said the commitment of 100 businesses for Small Shop at Night comes as a positive endorsement of the idea.

“We know that Mosaic and Lululemon have found success in being open at night so we hope the other retailers taking part will see the benefits as well,” she said.

On Thursday, there

will be live music and entertainment featuring local artists in difference areas of downtown Kelowna.

The public can also visit the Laurel Packinghouse for wine tasting, Rotary Centre for the Arts will offer free samples of gelato and delicious free handcrafted chocolate at the corner of Bertram and Bernard.

The Okanagan Basin Water Board is ramping up its efforts for the provincial and federal governments to aid efforts to help prevent invasive zebra and quagga mussels from being brought into the Okanagan.

Starting this week, the local water board, responsible for providing leadership on water issues that span the valley, has launched a “Speak out!” initiative, inviting Okanagan residents to go to www.DontMoveAMussel.ca and write to their MLA and their MP and urge action.

cial and federal governments to step up to the plate. Zebra and quagga mussels are a triple threat to our well-being,” said OBWB chair Doug Findlater, the mayor of West Kelowna.

“They pose a significant environmental threat, a threat to our infrastructure which we’ll all pay for with increased taxes, and an economic threat—to tourism and more.”

Research conducted for the OBWB notes that an invasion of these mussels, originally from Europe, could cost the Okanagan more than $43 mil-

lion a year just to manage.

They are known to stimulate toxic algae blooms, litter beaches with sharp shells, clog boat motors, foul water intakes and outfalls, put fish and the ecology of our lakes at risk, and more.

There is no proven method to eradicate the mussels once they arrive that doesn’t also cause significant environmental impacts.

The agency launched the Don’t Move a Mussel campaign last summer to inform residents of the threat these mussels pose, and to support efforts by water stewardship groups to encourage boaters and those with other watercraft to “Clean, Drain,

Dry” their equipment.

At the same time, the OBWB has been calling on the federal government to pass pending legislation allowing Canada Border Services agents to stop and inspect boats coming into Canada, and urging the province to bring in inspection stations—similar to U.S. programs that have self-funded boater-pay sticker programs.

The province has estimated an effective inspection program would be about $2.4 million per year (15 stations at a cost of $60,000 to $160,000 each per year).

“We’ve done our research, boat inspection stations and the right legislation in place are

key,” Findlater noted.

“It’s impractical to be at each boat launch with so many private launch sites. But, there are only so many roads into the province and these can be monitored much more easily.

“This effort to encourage residents to join us in our call for action comes from valley citizens themselves who have been asking. ‘What can we do?’” added Findlater.

“We want residents to go to www.DontMoveAMussel.ca, to learn more, and send letters to their MLA and MP. This is urgent.

“We can win if we can get senior government to act now.”

From the ground up: Mission Group looks to build sustainable communities.

Michael Herhaus wasn’t thinking about the benefits of buying a home constructed to Built Green standards.

But since purchasing his Winsome Hill home in Kelowna, Herhaus has come to appreciate those benefits.

“I was not aware that it was Built Green—that wasn’t something I was thinking about,” said Herhaus.

Be also wasn’t looking to buy pre-sale, either, having heard past horror stories about that process.

But his realtor knew Mission Group, so Herhaus said they were the only builder he would buy from pre-sale.

George and Arlene live at Winsome Hill, and of their home buying experience, George said: “In our first brand new home, we could smell the formaldehyde in the carpet and you could smell the paint fumes. When we did our first walk through of this home, you couldn’t smell anything. There’s also a lot less dust. It feels a lot cleaner in this new home.”

Can I use rental income when purchasing a new property?

Yes you can but the amount of income you can use is dependent on your total down payment.

If you have an insured mortgage through CMHC (less than 20% down), you are only able to use 50% of the rental income. So for example, if you get $1,000/ month or $12,000/year, you can only use $6,000 of that and add it to your income.

If you have an existing home, are turning it into a rental and buying a new home, , you are able to use what is called a rental offset or rental worksheet to offset the mortgage payments on the rental property. Basically in this scenario, the Lender can take the income and use 80% of the rents and apply it AGAINST the mortgage payment. For example, if rent was $1000/month, the Lender can take $800 of that income and “offset” it against the mortgage payment. This is a huge benefit in qualifying for a mortgage and can often mean the difference between being approval or declined.

My mom is in her late 80’s and is having difficulties after the passing of my dad 6 months ago, I am worried that she is not getting enough to eat and she is not getting out with friends anymore. What can I do to help?.

Your mom is likely showing signs of physical and emotional limits related to the loss. The feelings of loss and sadness will leave her fatigued and with no energy.

Let her know that her body and mind are telling her what to do. She will need daily rest .Make sure she is eating balanced meals and getting the proper amounts of fluid. Make a plan with your siblings to take her out or join her in her home for a few meals per week so she has a social connection while she is eating.

At Nurse Next Door we can help with those tasks that she has little energy for now. We can listen compassionately to your mom and be there non judgmentally for as long as she needs us. If your mom went for coffee with your dad on Wednesdays and would like to continue this activity but does not want to do that alone, a caring companion can do it with her.

We often see that after a spouse passes the remaining spouse has difficulty carrying on with tasks that do not give them joy. Encourage your mom to do the things that she loves rather than worrying about the day to day tasks of maintaining her home. This will enable her to have more energy to do those things she truly enjoys. Your mom was a wife for many years and being that she is in her eighties she may have a difficult time mustering the energy to get involved in those social activities now that she no longer has your dad for support and encouragement. One of the ways your mom (wife) defined herself for many years has now changed and she will need time and the support of family and friends to live a fulfilled life. Support each other and remember everyone deals with grief differently and we all have the right to experience it in our own unique way.

How to take control over emotional binge eating urges

A

re you an emotional eater?

Does food seem to control you? Do you feel like your eating is out of control?

If so, you can take charge of emotional eating and find success in losing weight.

According to the Eat Mindfully, Live Vibrantly program at www.AmIHungry.com, if you struggle with emotional eating you need to recognize that a desire to eat is due to “head hunger” rather than true hunger,you can choose to do another activity to redirect your attention away from food until the urge passes—or until you feel hungry.

By practicing the Stop-BreatheReflect-Choose technique you create space between the urge to eat and acting on that urge. Identify and name the feeling you’re experiencing and learn to allow your feelings to flow

through you rather than push them away with food Be patient with yourself as you learn to consider food in a different way. You Bobbi didn’t arrive at your Kittle current weight from a few weeks of over-eating. Nor did food one day suddenly become your enemy.

Johnson at home as Jays’ head coach Richdale ties for 11th in Illinois Jared Johnson excited to get chance to be head coach for the Kelowna Jays baseball club.

There are few places Jared Johnson would rather be than at the ball park.

This summer, the 29-year-old’s passion for baseball will be put to use as the new head coach of the Kelowna Jays.

Johnson, who has served as an assistant to Geoff White with the Okanagan College Coyotes the last six seasons, decided the time was right to take another step forward in his coaching career.

“Until I worked with Geoff and the Coyotes, I had never really considered getting involved with the coaching side of the game,” said Johnson. “I found that I really enjoyed it, and now it’s something I want to see if I can do over the long term. I’m excited to get this chance with the Jays.”

Raised in Kelowna, Johnson came up through the city’s minor baseball system.

The promise he showed as a young pitcher eventually led to opportunities south of the border where he played at both Central Arizona and Benedictine University, where he earned his college degree.

Johnson was also chosen twice in the Major League Baseball draft by the Miami Marlins, in 2003 and again in 2005.

Though a pro career didn’t follow, Johnson continued to excel at whatever level he played

at, turning himself into both a solid shortstop and an effective power hitter. Johnson also played with Canada at the World Baseball Challenge in 2011 where he hit a pair of home runs.

After playing the last several summers with the Jays, Johnson plans to spend considerably less time on the field in 2014 to devote more time to his coaching duties.

“You can’t beat going to the ball park, I’ve been doing it so many years as a player, now I’m looking forward to doing it as a coach,” said the 6-foot3, 200-pound Johnson. “I really get enjoyment from seeing players excelling, so I’m looking forward to that part of it. My focus is now on coaching.”

On the Jays’ roster, about half of the players are in the 18- to 19-yearold range and most are from the OC Coyotes’ program, while the other half range from their early to mid 20s. Members of the Okanagan Major Baseball League, the Jays will play about 40 games this season, including many of those against teams from Vernon, Kamloops, Trail and Burnaby.

Still relatively inexperienced as a head coach, Johnson admits he has plenty to learn and is eager to improve his craft on a daily basis.

Jays’ president Bill Bayne sees the locally-grown Johnson as the ideal fit for the position.

“Jared has been associated with high caliber baseball in Kelowna for many years, both as a player and a coach, and the Jays feel that the time is right for him to become an integral part of the organization,” said Bayne.

And what kind of a coach does Johnson consider himself to be ?

“I like to think I’m a player’s coach,” said Johnson, who owns a home in Kelowna. “I want the guys to have fun, feel

comfortable and play some good baseball at the same time. I think at this level, it’s about building relationships and growing together as a team.”

If the Jays early-season results are any indication, then Johnson’s approach is working well.

Kelowna is 8-3 so far this season, following a two-game split over the

weekend at Elks Stadium with the Northwest Honkers.

In the opener, OC pitcher Zac Burlon tossed a complete-game three hitter and rookie catcher Brock Chilton had two RBIs in a 2-0 Jays win.

In Game 2, coach Johnson had a single, a double and two walks in a 5-1 loss.

This week, the Jays will face the Okanagan Athletics in an exhibition game, Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Elks.

A second-round 68 helped push Samantha Richdale to her best finish of the season on golf’s Symetra Tour.

The 30-year-old from Kelowna tied for 11th place over the weekend at the Decatur-Forsyth Classic in Decatur, Ill., finishing just four shots back of the winning score.

After an opening round 74, Richdale shared the best score of Day 2 with a four-under 68, a round which featured four birdies during a six-hole stretch on the back nine.

“I’ve been hitting the ball well this week and my short game has been good, too,” Richdale said after the second round.

Richdale closed out the three-round event with an even-par 72 on Sunday to finish in a seven-way tie for 11th and $1,604 payday.

The latest earnings have pushed Richdale from 57th to 47th on the Symetra Tour money list where she now has $7,602 this season.

The top five players at season’s end receive their full-time LPGA Tour card for 2015.

Richdale played previously on the LPGA Tour from 2010 to 2012.

Earlier this season, she finished second at a Canadian Tour event in Parksville to enjoy her biggest cheque of the year at $8,498.18.

This coming weekend, Richdale and the Symetra Tour will move on to South Bend, Indiana for the Four Winds Invitational.

Slumping Falcons hit the road for six the series finale on Sunday night.

COSA to host Hobie 16 Trapseat and Women’s 18 North American championships The Central Okanagan Sailing Association (COSA) is preparing to host two unique and major sailing events later this month.

From June 26 to 29, COSA will stage the Hobie 16 Trapseat and the Women’s Hobie 18 North American Championships.

The Hobie 16 Trapseat is an adapted catamaran supporting an able-bodied crew and a disabled skipper. At least three Para-

lympians and one Pan American champion will participate on these boats.

COSA last hosted the Hobie 16 Trapseat World Championships in 2002 and 2005. The Hobie 16s, with a disabled skipper at the controls, can reach speeds of 20 to 25 mph.

“These are boats that have been modified but they sail exactly the same as a normal Hobie and they are extremely fast,” said COSA director Devin Rubadeau.

“If the winds get up, there can be lots of crashes, the boats will tip over…it can be quite dramatic for a Paralympic sport, and pretty interesting to watch.”

The Women’s Hobie 18 championship was created to encourage the participation of more women skippers, and now boasts some of the continent’s best sailors. The Hobie 18 is one of the world’s fastest high performance sailboats.

Among the competitors in the women’s event will be former world champion Gillian Thomson from Kelowna.

“The racing will be fast, these boats can reach close to 30 miles an hour,” Rubaduea said. “The great thing is the racing will be right in front of the spectators, only about 100 metres away so that’s something you don’t see too often in sailing competition.”

The competition will

take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily beginning on Friday, June 27, just off the COSA dock at 4220 Hobson Road in Kelowna.

This event has been made possible by a generous donation from Odlum Brown, and grants from the Province of B.C., the City of Kelowna, and the North American Hobie Cat Association.

The Kelowna Falcons will look to put a tough week of baseball behind them as they hit the road this week for West Coast League action.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School grad Vanessa Botteselle will suit up for the UBC Okanagan Heat for the upcoming Canada West women’s basketball season.

The 5-foot-7 point guard and Lower Mainland zone championship MVP will bring a floor-general mentality to help orchestrate the team’s offense with some added passing ability to set up the team’s cast of shooters.

Averaging 22 points and five assists per contest in her Grade 12 season, Botteselle also posted a monster 29-point game against the thenthird ranked Vernon Panthers. Even the 29 point game likely paled in comDparison to her Saints’ December trip this past year in which her team found themselves with two hours of floor time on the court at the Barclay Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets.

During her school’s offseason Botteselle has played for Team B.C.’s U16 and U17 squads as well as participated with the 3D Basketball Academy. Her U16 provincial team won the Western Canadian Championships.

When she wasn’t dribbling the ball on hardwood, Botteselle would often find herself kicking one on a turf. She doubled the previous five years as both a soccer and basketball player, but chose to focus on basketball for her senior year in high school.

Botteselle has been on Heat coach Heather Semeniuk’s radar for some time now, and is thrilled that the North Vancouver native has chosen the Okanagan for her post-secondary athletic and academic home.

“I am excited that Vanessa chose UBCO and will be on our roster for next season,” said Semeniuk. “Her speed,

Botteselle appreciates the physical stress and demands of playing at the CIS level, and is already preparing for the jump in play.

“I am ready for the challenge of playing at the next level,” she said.

“There are some things I need to do to prepare my-

self for university basketball. I need to get stronger and in better shape so that I can keep up with the faster paced game as well as with stronger girls.”

Botteselle will be enrolling in a general Arts and Sciences program to begin with at UBC Okanagan, and has expressed some interest in pursuing a career in policing. She feels as though the Kelowna school was just the right fit to pursue her academic needs and to open doors for career opportunities.

“I am unsure of what I will be studying in the long term, but I hope that through attending UBCO I will find my passion,” she reflected about her future endeavours, adding that, “I fell in love with the campus. I knew that UBCO was a good fit for me after my first visit. The coaching staff, team environment, and focus to get better are reasons I wanted to be a part of the UBCO Heat.”

Don’t let inflexibility derail your own success

C

reating a successful career takes hard work.

However you define success for yourself—a good salary, regular promotions, respect from your co-workers—it is something to be proud of and celebrate.

After all, you got where you are today by applying your natural talents, learning new skills and sheer effort.

Clearly you’re doing something, if not most things, right. That’s important to remember because that will keep you confident.

It’s just as essential to admit that some of the behaviours that got you to where you are now don’t actually work all the time.

Everyone has blind spots when it comes to their own behaviour, meaning there are times when you are completely unaware of how you come across to others.

You may not notice when your usual approach is not working or when a situation demands a skill you may lack.

If you constantly misread your impact on others you run the risk of sidetracking your own success.

If you knew that, you wouldn’t do it, right? Of

We need a little extra help to see them. And sometimes even with new awareness, we resist changing our behaviour, ignoring the warning signs until there is a very real possibility that you will derail your own career.

A common vulnerability that I see in my leadership coaching practice is making decisions without consulting or advising others affected by them.

In the extreme this also includes being dismissive of any resistance or outside input either before or after the decision is made.

If you are in a management position, it is likely due in part because you are seen as decisive and action-oriented —you are responsible and you get things done.

These leadership qualities are real strengths; the trick is to not over-use

them to the point they become a liability.

The ongoing work as a leader is learning when to be direct, when to get input and to what degree.

It is a sliding scale.

There will be times when you have to communicate a decision that’s already been made (usually by someone else); other times you may want to sell an idea of your own.

To be successful in a leadership role you need to adapt your style to what the circumstances require.

As a manager you are required to make decisions everyday that affect others.

How you handle these impacts your reputation as a leader. The first step toward avoiding a derailing behaviour like inflexible decision-making is to understand your usual way of operating.

Then you need to get some honest feedback about how it is perceived, stay open to what you hear and use it as a starting point for improvement.

Growing up doesn’t mean losing your inner child sense of fun

hen I was eight years old, I decided the perfect age to be was16.

It seemed to make sense then, because 16-year-olds can drive and my plastic Barbie convertible was probably the coolest thing in my

life at that time.

But eight-year-old me would have been seriously disappointed to learn that16 actually ended up being quite a terrible year.

For one thing, the cool 16-year-olds portrayed in movies are actually 26-year-olds in real life,

and it’s really hard to replicate that coolness when most of your friends still have acne and none of you can actually drive without your parents.

Second, driving with your parents involves a lot less glamour and a lot more stress and tears (on both ends) than I remember experiencing while playing with my Barbie convertible.

So at 16, I decided that 20 was probably the ideal age. Now that I am 20, I can affirm that in many ways, it is.

Right now, I’m in a rare position where I can enjoy many of the benefits of adulthood without all of its responsibilities.

My tax returns are not accompanied by multiple bills and my status as a university student means I can contribute intelligently to conversations while still getting away with eating excessive amounts of Kraft Dinner (the fact that I still live at home is irrelevant—Kraft Dinner binges are a rite of passage for all university students).

However, I never imagined how much 20-year-old me would envy eight-year-olds.

And this envy is intensified by the fact that I live with one.

During the school year, my eight-year-old brother understandably complains about having to go to bed early, but after a full day of classes, public transit and pretending to be a responsible adult, I always wish I could just flop into bed at the same time as him.

My little brother also holds an advantageous position because when he goes laser tagging, he’s allowed to be completely ruthless with the other kids there.

But when I go laser tagging, I get disapproving looks from parents if I tell kids they’re going

down in the next round.

Laser tagging is one of my favourite activities and I really don’t think it’s fair that eight-year-olds get a monopoly on the use of force in that game.

So now, I am convinced that eight really is the ideal age.

But regardless of age, I think all of us need to let out our inner child from time to time.

And this doesn’t necessarily mean we have to surrender our identity as mature adults.

When I saw the Lego movie for the second time and was busy making myself sick with gummy worms and M&Ms, I was also planning how I could use the society portrayed in the Lego movie as an illustration in my next political science paper. www.doyouever.net

September 17, 1956 – June 9, 2014 Suddenly in Kelowna, Craig left us far too soon. He was born in Victoria, BC and grew up in Duncan, graduating from Cowichan High School and started his career as a small engine mechanic. After living in the lower mainland, he moved to Kelowna which became his home. Craig enjoyed fishing, friends and always had a story to tell. Survived by his mother Ileane (Joe), sisters Carole (Ron), Kellie, nephew Carl (Noel), neice Heidi and great nephew Ryan. Predeceased by his father John.

The family would like to give sincere thanks to Dave Stratten for being a special friend and employer. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Jackie Miller of Kelowna, passed away on June 9th at the Hamlets in Penticton. He was born in Rossland, BC on July 15, 1948, where he lived until he moved with his parents to Kelowna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ruth Miller and sister Joyce Nickoriuk. He is survived by his sisters, Evie Jones of Auburn, WA, Lynne Forbush of Idaho Falls, ID and Kay Baker of Logan, Utah. He lived in the Rutland area with Randy and Bonnie De Vries and family for the past fifteen years until he moved into the Hamlets in Penticton about a year ago. Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 696 Glenmore Road, Kelowna, BC on Thursday, June 19th at 11:00 am.

FULLERTON, DARYL LEE

19 May 1934 to 6 June 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daryl Lee Fullerton. Daryl passed away peacefully at Kelowna General Hospital with his daughters at his side.

Daryl is predeceased by his wife Shirley and his sister Freda Palmer. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Stacie (Bob) Osborne, Kellie (Harold) Reay, five grandchildren, Jennifer (Adam) Taylor, Michael (fiancÊ Jeanine) Osborne, Trevor (fiancÊ Amy) Osborne, Brett Reay and Jodie Reay. Daryl is also survived by five great grandchildren, Chaundia, Kaden, Brennan, and Rylen Taylor and Ryan Osborne. Also left to mourn are Daryl’s brother Roy (Verna) Fullerton, brother-in-law Doug Palmer.

Daryl was a great storyteller and enjoyed entertaining family and friends with stories of his life. He loved his daughter’s unconditionally and was always there for them. Sleep well Dad, you are loved and missed.

BURKE,BARBARA With family at her side Barb passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the Kelowna General Hospital.

Born to parents, Paddy and Kate Burke, she lived the majority of her life in Kelowna with the exception of a few years when she lived in Edmonton, Alberta.

Her family was the love and centre of her life and she enjoyed their visits at her home on many occasions. Being an avid reader she was usually found with a book or her e-reader close at hand. She especially loved History and Biographies and was always eager to share stories or recipes that she had discovered or read. Barb was very compassionate and had a great sense of humour right to the very end. She spent many years as a home care nurse where she loved to care for her patients and became very close to the families involved. Sadly survived by one brother, Maurice (Audrey) of Williams Lake BC, three sisters, Muriel of 150 Mile House BC, Eileen (Harold) of Vernon BC, Diane (Lou) of Lake Country BC and sister-in-law Myrtle of Kelowna BC. She was Auntie Barb to many nieces and nephews and grand- nieces and grand-nephews whom she loved dearly and she cherished their visits when they came to see her.

She is also survived by a few cousins and distant relatives.

Predeceased by her parents, two brothers, John and Donald, one sister Patricia and two brothers-in-law, Lorne and Harold.

Very special thanks to Doctor Price and Doctor Rolf and the nurses on 4B West who gave her such exceptional care especially during her last few days.

Their compassion will not be forgotten.

A private family service will take place at a later date.

Improved access online may help mental health services

T

herapy apps have been inevitable ever since the invention of the smart phone.

Really, since the Internet age began it’s been simply a matter of time before we figured out how to do some mental health care online.

Today, there are a growing number of apps and websites offering various forms of therapy for mental health issues.

In many ways this is in response to the way we tend to communicate now via social media or text message.

It makes sense for established mental health organizations to reach out in these media, especially for younger clients who tend to be very comfortable communicating over their phones or computers rather than in person.

The rise in online mental health services also has the potential to make this kind of care much more accessible both here and abroad where there is often a real shortage of trained healthcare professionals.

Most effective treatments for mental health conditions recommend an element of psychological therapy led by a highly qualified professional such as a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist.

Unfortunately, even here in North America, we have a shortage of these professionals and it is difficult for those who need health care to get it in a timely fashion.

In developing countries the situation is often much worse.

For example in India, there are roughly 5,000 mental health professionals to service a population of about 1.2 billion people.

Obviously, this is nowhere near sufficient.

Although we need to continue training more specialists, this will not be the only solution to the problem of access to mental health services.

Creating a new clinic-

Some countries are looking into task shifting —training less qualified people to take on a specific task in therapy.

This is interesting and may prove useful in certain settings, but there is a

concern about compromising quality of care.

Moving mental health services online will perhaps prove to be the most effective way to dramatically improve access to these services and to stretch professional expertise through program-led treatments.

Therapist-free interventions have been around for a while in the form of self-help books and some have good evidence to show they can be effective.

Now with smartphones and high speed Internet, these resources can be enhanced to be more interactive and greatly ex-

use of these therapy apps and other online mental health resources will need to be monitored and researched more fully, but studies to date do show promise—particularly in depression and anxiety disorders.

One consistent finding is that these programs are most effective when there is additional external support. Ideally, this support would come from a call centre or non-specialist to

ensure the intervention is still program-led.

I think online resources have the potential to be a very useful tool provided they are developed by professionals with a nuanced understanding of the complex issues involved in mental health conditions.

I would also caution that although online, program-led treatments may be useful for some issues, they will likely

not replace the need for thoughtful professional care in many cases.

Another difficulty will likely be sifting out the good quality programs from cheap imitations, which may not be helpful and could be damaging.
