WELCOME TO THE PRINCE RUPERT RECREATION COMPLEX A message from the
Mayor
PRINC
All members of City Council and the Recreation Commission, join me in hoping that residents of all ages will enjoy the rejuvenated and enhanced recreation facilities and opportunities that are taking place this year. City Council has approved over 1 million dollars in infrastructure improvements for the Civic Centre Recreation Complex. Please take a look at the recreation programs being offered this summer. Enjoy practicing healthy opportunities. It’s a great way to live and look after yourself and your family and friends. Thanks to the Recreation Complex staff for the new revitalized Leisure Guides. They are a great source of information covering a variety of activities, events, and topics. An addition to our City and our governance structure is the newly established Recreation Advisory Commission. The Commission was formed as an entity for reaching out to our sports minded community and those residents. If you have suggestions, ideas or concerns, you’re welcome to talk to myself, a Councillor, or one of the Recreation Commissioners. I wish you all an enjoyable and active summer.

Old Picnic Favourites Fried Chicken Aim to include four food groups in your packed lunch – this helps provide your body with a variety of nutrients for good health and the fuel your body needs to be active. Choose foods that are in season and foods that are easy to eat while outside such as whole fresh fruit—nature’s fast food, whole grain crackers with bean dip, and finger foods such as baby tomatoes or carrots. Limit the number of unwanted guests at your lunch! Ants aren’t the only intruders, ‘bugs’ such as E. coli and Salmonella can multiply quickly in food stored at room temperature and warmer. Pack your lunch in a cooler with plenty of ice packs, keep your cooler out of direct sunlight and don’t let food sit out of the cooler for longer than two hours.

Let’s work together to keep the pool water free from fouling, and the pool open for all swimmers by practicing Healthy Swimming Behaviours … • Please do not go swimming if you are feeling unwell, especially if you have an upset stomach. • Do not bring your child to swimming lessons if they are feeling unwell, have diarrhoea, are vomiting (or have vomited in the past day), or have a cough. • Shower with soap before swimming; wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. • Non-toilet trained infants/toddlers and participants who experience incontinence must wear leak-proof swim pants or garments of a similar nature. • Take children for frequent bathroom breaks, ensure your child uses the bathroom prior to entering the pool and if it appears your child needs to use the bathroom during swimming, take him/her to the washroom immediately! • Change diapers in the change rooms and not at the pool side. Dispose of diapers properly and clean up the diaper changing area. • Avoid swallowing the pool water or getting water in your mouth. • Please do not feed your child before swimming and do not go swimming for one hour after eating. • In the unfortunate event that our pool water is contaminated with fecal matter or vomit, facility staff are required to close the pool in order to properly disinfect the water and ensure water quality is within the appropriate range set by the Public Health Act before swimmers can enter the pool.
Please practice healthy swimming behaviours. Thank you for your cooperation!

For example, do you know how to: • Feed a baby or change a diaper? • Prepare a simple meal? • Play games with children of all ages? • Prevent injuries and keep children safe? • Handle an emergency if one happens. For many young adolescents, babysitting is their first job, and the Red Cross can help them become real “pros”! They learn valuable tips for managing their business, and much more.
