Don’t let alcohol and drugs cloud your child’s future There’s nothing more touching than seeing your teenagers on the most exciting day of their lives, walking across the stage to receive their high school diploma or heading out for their formal. They radiate such self-confidence, and their futures are bright with promise. Don’t let drugs and alcohol lead them away

from that, toward tragedy.

It’s normal for kids to want to celebrate these rites of passage to the maximum, but the role of parents is to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Parents have to do what they can to ensure that their kids’ lives are not ruined by a car accident caused by a young driver

under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

What to do to prevent a tragedy? Discuss the dangers with your teenagers whenever possible, especially as their big day approaches.

Emphasize the fact that drug or alcohol consumption could spoil this memorable evening and that the consequences could even

be fatal. Ensure that event organizers have planned security measures to prevent any substance abuse.

Offer to be your teenager’s designated driver throughout the evening, even if that means staying up until after dawn. It’s becoming more common for parents to get together and offer a

safe driving service to youngsters after the formal. If you promise not to complain, no matter where you have to go, no matter what time it is, your teenager might very well accept this winwin deal.

Other options might be to hire a limousine service for them or rent them a hotel

Driving distractions – keep your eyes on the road

By Cst. Lisa Schlatter Community Policing Cranbrook RCMP Have you ever crossed the center line of the road while adjusting the vehicle temperature? What’s the harm in daydreaming for 2 seconds? During the 2 seconds you took your eyes off the road, you’ve traveled 30 metres at a low speed of 50 km/h.

Many of us have been guilty of occasionally multi-tasking behind the wheel. Grabbing a snack, taking a call, checking our appearance in the mirror, or setting the GPS. It may only be a couple of seconds that your eyes are off the road, but it can have disastrous consequences.

Driving distractions take your attention away from driving,

make you less aware of what is happening on the road around you and slow your reaction time.

There are many different types of distractions. Physical distractions included activities that cause you to remove your hands from the steering wheel.

Cognitive distractions included activities that take your mind away from the road, such as having a conversation with passengers, talking on a cell phone, re-living an argument in your mind or even daydreaming.

Combination distractions included activities that take your hands, eyes and mind off the road, such as reading a map or choosing different music to listen to. Add in winter road conditions and you have a

Why it pays to graduate tional opportunities as younger members.

Many people move to North America for the educational opportunities, and a diploma can symbolize taking advantage of those opportunities.

According to the organization Do Something, roughly 20 percent of first-time college students come from parents who have a high school diploma or less. Around 80 percent of students who enter high school now earn a regular or advanced diploma.

Dropout rates are on the decline, and a growing number of high school students continue on to two- or four-year degrees.

Canada is second only to the United States in the high school completion rate of its working-age population. Statistics Canada says that enrollment in Canadian universities continues to increase. Enrollments are now approximately 5 percent larger than they were just a few years ago.

Community colleges are benefitting from this influx of students.

Various statistics from the 2010-2011 year point to more than eight million Canadian students enrolled

in community colleges at that time. Community colleges enable students to take core curriculum credits at a less expensive institution and then move on to a four-year school later on to expand on their coursework. This presents a viable option to students who are looking to keep education costs manageable.

The reason so many students continue to apply themselves and come out after four or more years with diplomas and degrees is that they realize how competitive the job market can be. Graduates have a distinct advantage over other candidates.

companies will not even consider a job candidate who does not possess some college education. Other employers pay more depending on the level of education the job candidates completed.

Some students, however, will insist that failure to have a diploma isn’t a barrier to success. For example, Richard Branson, the billionaire entrepreneur who owns Virgin Group, did not graduate high school. But such people are an aberration. Typically, earning a high school diploma and a bachelor’s degree is a key ingredient to landing a good job and enjoying professional success.

Speeding, alcohol, and fatigue are the main causes of road accidents. Be sure to adopt safe driving habits when you’re behind the wheel, for your own safety as well as that of your passengers and other road users. Pay particular attention to the many pedestrians and cyclists on the roads during the summer months. If you don’t feel able to drive, don’t.

Those most at risk are children, seniors, and people working in the hot sun. The main symptom of heat stroke is dry skin that is hot and red (because the body is dehydrated, it stops producing sweat). When it is very hot, stay in a cool place or in the shade, drink lots of water, and wear loose, lightweight clothing.

Choosing the right summer tires Looking for the safest car on the market Choosing the right summer tires is just as important as choosing the right winter tires. Because just as winter tires are designed for special conditions, such as driving in heavy snow or on ice, summer tires can be chosen for specific needs as well, including for performance enhancement or wet climates.

In Canada, keep in mind that although we can buy summer or all-season tires, the latter is not considered part of the winter tire family. Tire manufacturers generally install all-season tires on their cars and light trucks, but they are most definitely not made for the kind of winters most provinces experience. True summer tires are mostly destined for performance cars.

When choosing a new all-season or summer tire, don’t just look for the cheapest price possible. Try to get the best value for your budget’s dollar. Remember that your life and your passengers’ lives depend upon those four points of contact with the road — a patch of tire that i s no

larger than the palm of your hand. That is especially so if you like to drive at 120 km/h.

A performance car that was created to run on performance tires should always be shod with real performance tires, no matter how expensive they are. So, remember this piece of information when shopping for a new car: although they might look like regular sedans, some cars were designed and built with performance in mind, and they absolutely require performance tires. Do not choose less expensive ones that will not meet the car’s engineering in certain situations.

Lastly, when looking for a new all-season or performance tire, try to find one that can disperse water very efficiently. That might just be the best advice an expert could give to a car owner living in any area where it can rain at any moment, and very often.

Summer is the busiest time of the year for buying a new car.

Many motorists have spent the winter reading articles and reports on all the new cars in order to choose the best vehicle for their needs and budget. Parents can point certain facts and some fiction when discussing alcohol with their children

One of the most important discussions parents can have with their children is a discussion about alcohol.

Parents are often wary of such a discussion, fearing if they come on too strongly when discussing the dangers of alcohol that their children might be too curious about alcohol to avoid it.

As difficult a discussion as it can be, parents must have an open dialogue with their kids about alcohol, and the sooner the better. The Century Council, a notfor-profit organization devoted to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking, notes that 39 percent of eighth graders, 58 percent of tenth graders, and 72 percent of

twelfth graders have reported trying alcohol at least once. To parents, such figures only highlight the importance of talking to kids about the dangers of alcohol, and why it’s best to avoid alcohol until it’s legal to drink it.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism offers the following tips to parents who are ready to discuss alcohol with their child.

Make it a conversation. Adults don’t like to be lectured to and neither do kids, especially teenagers. When discussing alcohol with a child, parents should make it a conversation and avoid lecturing. Kids will be more comfortable during a conversation and are more likely to open up if they are comfortable.

Talk to kids about their views on alcohol.

The aforementioned statistics indicate that kids, even those who have never tried alcohol, are likely aware of it. Ask kids what they know about alcohol and how they feel about drinking and why they think kids

drink before they’re legally allowed to do so. Listen closely, and be careful not to interrupt. Doing so will help kids recognize that their parents value and respect their opinions.

Share some facts about alcohol. Misinformation reigns with respect to alcohol, and adults and children alike are often prone to believing certain myths. However, when discussing alcohol with kids, parents should share some facts to help dispel some of the more common misconceptions about alcohol, including: - Beer and wine is just as dangerous as hard liquor. A 12-ounce beer and a 5-ounce glass of wine has the same amount of alcohol as a 1.5-ounce shot of liquor. Kids might feel they will be fine if they just consume beer and not hard liquor, but beer is no less safe than liquor, especially when consumed in mass quantities.

- It takes hours for a single drink to leave a person’s system. Common “remedies” like a cold shower or a cup

of coffee do not force alcohol out of the body. On average, it takes 2 to 3 hours for a single drink to exit a person’s system.

- Alcoholism isn’t just for adults. Kids often feel alcoholism can only develop in adults. However, kids can develop serious alcohol problems as well, and the earlier a person starts drinking alcohol the more likely he or she is to develop such a problem.

Discuss false portrayals of alcohol consumption. Many kids start drinking alcohol because they feel it’s “cool” to do so. Parents can dispel this popular myth by pointing out the falsehoods about alcohol promoted on television, in the movies and in advertisements.?When watching a movie or television show with kids where drinking is portrayed, point out certain falsehoods that are commonly portrayed. For example, explain to kids that characters in the movies or on television are often portrayed as having a great time while drinking, when in reality alcohol often
