A local’s guide to all things
Burnaby and New Westminster
SUMMER 2014
I’ve been at Shannon Oaks for 2 years, and I would recommend it to anyone.
I am the oldest out of 10 siblings; I stayed home to help my mother. I love caring for others. I was a volunteer at different hospitals for many years. What keeps me so youthful is a positive attitude and caring for others.
Call us for your personal tour and stay for a complimentary lunch. You’ll meet Joan and other Residents just like her who are living life well at Shannon Oaks—a vibrant seniors community.

My City: Showcasing your city Warm weather is returning, and it’s time to get out and enjoy ourselves. Luckily, there is so much to do when you live at the heart of it all. The cities of Burnaby and New Westminster have a bounty of options when it comes to arts, culture, sports and simply getting out and enjoying the natural beauty that we have in this part of the world. From the ever-changing Fraser River to the sweeping views at the top of Burnaby Mountain; from the grassroots festivals like Hats Off Day to the pageantry of the Hyack Parade; and from the deep, rich grooves of the Burnaby Blues & Roots Festival to the diversity celebrated in the Royal City Pride Festival, these two cities really have it all. With this guide, My City, hopefully you’ll get a new appreciation for all these cities have to offer. By no means is this a rundown of everything—it’s not comprehensive. And if we’ve missed something, let us know and we’ll try to get it in the next edition. But if you do one thing over the coming months, I encourage you to get out and visit one of the festivals listed in this guide. Or visit one of the many parks in the area—did you know Burnaby is more than 25 per cent park space? Ride your bike down beneath the Expo line or Millennium Line on a warm day. Visit one of the many outdoor pools, or play some pitch-andputt at Central Park. Cultivate your spirit of adventure. Spring is here, and summer can’t be far behind. These are two great cities, and this magazine offers you a glimpse. Explore, and enjoy. After all, My City is your city. —Chris Bryan, Editor

EXPLORING YOUR BACKYARD RobeRt buRnaby PaRk A park of tall trees and deep ravines. Many of the trails here are on hills, so expect to do a bit of climbing. The effort is worth it however, as Robert Burnaby Park has many quiet corners and creekside spots to rest. Getting there: Follow Canada Way to 16th Avenue, turn northeast and then left on 1st Street.
b.C. PaRkway Cyclists commuting between Vancouver and New Westminster love the B.C. Parkway because it offers a car-free route. It’s also a great trip for families on bikes or just walking. Trails are paved in most sections. The parkway runs along the Expo SkyTrain line for 19 kilometres (11.8 miles) from Westminster Quay to False Creek in Vancouver.
FRaseR FoReshoRe PaRk Fraser Foreshore Park runs from Boundary Road to the Big Bend area along the river. The current eastern edge of the park, near the Canadian National Railway crossing of the Fraser River, is becoming an important environmental area. Getting there: From Marine Way in South Burnaby, turn south down to the very end of Byrne Road.
buRnaby Mountain ConseRvation aRea
buRnaby lake ReGional PaRk Burnaby Lake is the most popular park administered by Metro Vancouver, with the most annual visitors. The trails which circle the lake are restricted to walkers and runners. About 10 kilometres (six miles) in length, a lap around the lake is a favourite among runners. It is considered an important wildlife sanctuary with over 100 bird species visiting or calling the lake home.
baRnet MaRine PaRk
The mountain, water and city views from high atop Burnaby Mountain make this 1,423-acre park popular for locals and visitors alike. The mountain is popular with mountain bikers because of demanding climbing and downhill tracks. Trail runners, hikers and walkers will also find the mountain a great place to explore.
North of Burnaby Mountain lies Barnet Marine Park, located on the spectacular Barnet Inlet. This linear park is a favourite of water lovers as one can swim in the ocean, explore the shoreline or just bask in the sun. Picnic tables and barbeques are scattered under shady trees and a concession stand, change rooms and outdoor showers are available in summer.
CentRal valley GReenway
Queen’s PaRk
The 24-km urban trail is great for everything from cycling to walking to wheelchairs, and parallels the Millennium SkyTrain Line from River Market in Downtown New Westminster through Burnaby to Science World in Vancouver.
Queen’s Park is New Westminster’s flagship park, and features everything from a spray park and petting zoo to playgrounds, picnic areas and sports fields.
DeeR lake PaRk Deer Lake Park is a gorgeous blend of nature and culture all in one place. Enjoy the walking trails with scenic views along the lake, or visit the Burnaby Art Gallery, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Village Museum and Hart House Restaurant. During the busy summer festival season, the park is a bustling hub of activity.
CentRal PaRk Towering Douglas fir, hemlock, poplar and maple trees can be found in this urban forest that boasts an 8.5-km web of well-marked wooded trails criss-crossing the park. There’s also a pitch-and-putt golf course, tennis courts, gardens, playgrounds, an outdoor pool, baseball diamonds, playing fields and Swangard Stadium.
westMinsteR PieR PaRk Westminster Pier Park straddles the Fraser River in New Westminster (supported by 3,600 pilings) and when combined with the waterfront esplanade boardwalk creates a magnificent 2.5 km for waterfront walking.
