Hardly anyone at Burnaby’s RCMP detachment knew Terry Tomfohr when he died. Almost five decades later, nobody at the detachment can forget him. Tomfohr was a fresh-faced constable just three weeks into his first posting out of training at the force’s depot in Regina when he perished. He plummeted over a cliff while chasing some youths who had been harassing an elderly woman at her home in the Capitol Hill area. He was the first, and only, member

Al Lund, a retired officer who worked in the traffic division at the time, said everyone in the detachment was surprised they’d lost one of their own. “We’d never lost anybody,” said Lund. “Everybody was shocked.” Even though Tomfohr hadn’t been a part of the Burnaby RCMP long enough to make much of an impression, Jackson said it was an honour to be able to continue to remember him.

A local cycling advocate is questioning the safety of a traffic diversion barrier in North Burnaby after a woman apparently crashed into it while cycling early Monday morning. The 39-year-old Vancouver resident is in hospital after running into the barrier near Esmond Street and Cambridge Avenue. An area resident called 911 on June 2 at about 5:30 a.m. after discovering a female cyclist lying next to the barrier, say Burnaby RCMP. She was unconscious and showed signs of a severe head injury. Police believe she was not wearing a helmet nor had any lights on her bike as neither were found at the scene, said Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Major John Buis. The woman was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital where she remains in serious but stable condition. Police believe she had been cycling southbound on Esmond and hit the traffic barrier in the intersection. see ENGINEERING, A3

DISASTER DAY PHOTOS BY MARIO BARTEL

A massive weather calamity was the scenario mapped out for BCIT’s biennial Disaster Day on Wednesday to test its ability to respond to an emergency. More than 270 volunteers from the school’s emergency response corps, St. John Ambulance as well as professional emergency responders from the Burnaby fire department and RCMP participated in the exercise, which took six months to plan. “We understand in a major disaster, adults don’t get dibs,” said Teresa Sharp, the director of the exercise. “We’re on our own and we have to look after our people.”Observers from several agencies watched the disaster unfold in real time, complete with volunteer actors playing victims.

The crash may have happened at around 3:30 a.m., as a neighbour told police that’s when they heard a loud, unexplained noise coming from the intersection. “With summer approaching and the start of better weather, we would like to remind all cyclists of the importance of wearing a helmet with reflective clothing and having proper lights on the bicycle,” said Buis in a press release. “The lights on your bike are not only so you can be seen by motorists but also for you to see any obstacles in your path.” New Westminster cycling advocate Patrick Johnstone

Anti-spam laws futile We doubt there is anyone who hasn’t been annoyed by spam. We’re not talking about that delicious canned spiced ham, but the endless stream of e-mails advertising everything from Viagra to Rolux (sic) or the $30 million a nice man in Nigeria wants to send you. We’re being a bit silly here, but what is really ludicrous is the federal government’s new anti-spam legislation, which takes effect on July 1. It is hard to imagine a more trivial non-problem for the government to concern itself with, let alone how the rules, which require businesses get written or oral consent before they send e-mails or other digital messages to consumers, will put an end to spam. The new regulations address a problem that, by and large, has already been dealt with through technological means; spam filters at the level of both your home computer and your Internet Service Provider are sophisticated, effective and constantly being updated. This legislation also doesn’t do much to stop the particular flavour of spam email that is a problem: fraudulent or phishing e-mails trying to scam you into revealing your personal information. They’re unlikely to ask your permission either. On the end user side of the question, there will be some that want to file grievances regardless of how effective their spam filter has been, and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is already saying they won’t be able to handle the expected flood of complaints. So what have the feds accomplished with their new antispam legislation? An increase in bureaucracy, to be sure, but not much else. We would prefer they concentrate on legislation that actually means something. —Maple Ridge News/ Black Press

Months to think, instead of a moment A couple of weeks ago, I made a very serious error in judgment. I drank, and then drove. I was stopped in a routine police check, and I failed a roadside screening test. I am now paying the price, and it is extremely steep. I have lost my driver’s licence for 90 days, and it will be expensive getting it back. But the financial cost doesn’t begin to compare with the real pain. Words are inadequate as to how I feel, but here are some... Ashamed. Embarrassed. Guilty. Irresponsible. Gutted. That works well, too. Among what absolutely hurts the most—telling my 16-year-old daughter. This is what your father has done. The dad you deserve to be proud of. The role model in your life. I have brought more anxiety, uncertainty and complication into your life, and your mom’s. What was I thinking? The answer is, I wasn’t. It wasn’t so much thinking that I was OK to drive—it was more about not

Andrew Holota thinking at all. This was not deliberate. It was not an intentional flouting of the law, or a perception of somehow being exempt. It was just after dinner, for just a few moments, just on a short errand—just... just... just. The law dictates I should not have been on the road, and for good reason. I accept that. The penalties for a failed test are tough. Vehicle impounded for 30 days. An $800 bill to get it back. A $500 fine. A $250 licence reinstatement fee. An $800 responsible driver’s course. Go online to icbc.com to read the details. I understand why the laws in this respect have become more immediate and punitive. There have been too many people like me who drove after a few drinks.

The tougher laws are having a positive impact. Since the new rules were introduced, B.C. has seen a decrease in impaired driving deaths to an annual average of 54, half of a previous annual five-year average of 112. There are personal upsides in all of this as well. I did not cause an accident, nor was I involved in one. The consequences of that are almost too chilling to imagine. I learned a huge lesson—one that should have been obvious. Also clear is the necessity of some lifestyle changes. Those are underway. Job stress. Fatigue. The tensions of everyday life. None of those influences, nor any others, are reasons to drink irresponsibly. I am sharing my experience with you, because I sincerely hope that by reading this, others won’t repeat my grave error in judgment. It doesn’t require a great deal to fail a roadside screening test. Don’t take the chance. Caution over convenience. Not because of the potential

penalties that loom, but because of the risk you place upon yourself, your passengers and other people on the road. If you’re wondering, I was not ordered or asked to write this column. I could try to hide what happened from everyone other than my family and work. And that would make me a liar. To the constable who dealt with me: Thank you for your courtesy and professionalism. To my colleagues and friends: I sincerely apologize. I know you expect better, and you would be right. Most importantly, to my wife and daughter, and our moms: I failed more than a roadside test. The road to rebuilding your support and respect begins here. For anyone who drinks, read this, and please think before you drive. Now I have three months to do that. You just need one moment. How far would you travel for a home cooked meal? Munich, Germany – There’s no shortage of places to chow down here in Bavaria but that’s not really what I had in mind. Sometimes you just by Alexandra Straub hanker for some good ol’ fashioned home cooking and the desire makes distance no object. That’s not including the approximately 8,300 kms travelled to get to Munich, Germany. The destination: Budapest, Hungary, where I’ll have one night to spend with my grandparents – grandma Ilona and grandpa Pál Lencsés. I’ve got the use of a bright red 2015 Audi A3 and a full tank of gas, so why not? Renovated homes go on Parade with the GVHBA By Kerry Vital

Are you looking to renovate your own home and are in need of ideas? On June 8, the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association is hosting its annual Parade of Renovated Homes, and you’re sure to be inspired. “Professional RenoMark renovators, many of them awardwinners, will be on-site to offer expert advice and discuss their craftsmanship,” says GVHBA CEO Bob de Wit. “The

renovators are very proud of being part of a professional industry which helps consumers transform their houses into dream homes.” This year will include a record-breaking 22 homes all over the Lower Mainland, including North Vancouver, South Surrey, Burnaby and Tsawwassen. Among the renovations on the tour will be a beautiful redesign of a century-old home, incredible kitchen makeovers and the renovation of a home from the 1970s into a man’s dream retreat.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

De Wit notes that Metro Vancouver homeowners will spend $3.8 billion this year on renovating their homes, and this event offers you the rare opportunity to walk through professionally renovated homes and gather some ideas and advice. Admission is via $10 passport, which can be purchased at any of the homes and used to enter all of the homes on the tour. Children 17 and under are free. The parade takes place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., so be sure to plan your route before heading out. Part of the proceeds from the sales of the Parade of Renovated Homes passports will be used to fund the purchase of tools, building materials and safety gear for a carpentry training program at Guildford Park and Frank Hurt Secondary schools in Surrey, helping teach students to build new housing and renovate existing homes and fulfilling the growing need for skilled workers. For more information about the Parade of Renovated Homes and a list of the participating homes, visit www.gvhba.org/ events/eventcalendar.

masterstroke of convenience, the bathrooms feature motion sensor under-cabinet lighting. There are other details at Varsity that are proving popular. “People love the gas connection on the balcony for a barbecue,” Chen says. “If you’re downsizing, you’re not going to lose anything. That’s a big thing for people.” Part of the appeal of Varsity is its convenient location. It’s within walking distance to everything you’ll need, from shopping and dining to schools to leisure and recreation. Homeowners will also be close to the new Golden Ears Bridge, making commuting easy. “We got a walk score of 77 at Varsity,” says Chen. “That’s unusual for Langley, where you often have to take a car to everything. Even though it’s close to everything, it’s very quiet as the buildings are set back from the street.” Varsity is bordered by two protected green spaces, lending a natural feel to the project that adds to that quiet and calm feeling when arriving home. “Where else can you get a two-bedroom home for this price, beside green space, and in this location?” asks Chen. “It’s a no-brainer.” Two-bedroom homes start at $229,800. For more information visit www.liveatvarsity.com, call 604-539-2200 or stop by the sales centre at 20068 Fraser Highway, Langley.

with granite countertops complemented by alder shaker frame-and-panel-door cabinetry and a ceramic tile backsplash. Under-cabinet puck lighting and stainless-steel appliances are two other beautiful details in the kitchen. “These kitchens feel like they’re in a house,” says Chen. “You can cook without bumping elbows with someone else; there are no compromises here.” The bathrooms are soothing and spacious, with rich marble countertops (granite in the ensuite), ceramic floor tile accented by an antique white tub surround and shaker frame-and-panel-door cabinetry.
