Iconic theatre gets a facelift Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Oak Bay’s iconic theatre building will get a fresh look this summer after council OK’d the work Monday night. The property owner of 2188 Oak Bay Ave. plans to remove and install new exterior cladding and windows. Because the building is listed in the Community Heritage Registry council had the Heritage Commission look at the application. They met June 3 and agreed the work should go ahead provided they work with the property owners on a colour scheme and retain the curved shape of diagonals on the second story. Coun. Cairine Green expressed pleasure at how quickly the commission met and reviewed the application. “It’s a really good reflection on what is potentially a good relationship between the community and this property owner.” Work includes removing the Oak Bay Theatre sign and barnstyle commercial doors which will all be refurbished then reinstalled. “This is an icon for Oak Bay,” said Mayor Nils Jensen. “We look forward to its rejuvenation.” Council lifted a protection order put in place May 26 and the owner hopes to start work Monday (June 16). cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF

Arena closed for maintenance

Oak Bay’s threeweek bi-annual arena closure for maintenance started Monday. There are no major work items this year. Staff will be painting and working on other regular annual maintenance items and repairs. The closure ends June 29.

Uplands land survey underway

Currently in Oak Bay, the Uplands neighbourhood has a 100-year-old single pipe system to accommodate both sanitary sewer and storm water flows. The provincial government, through its Master Sewer Regulation, mandates that combined sewer and storm water overflows must be eliminated. On May 12, council awarded a contract to Polaris Land Surveyors to gather data, including a regional survey of property elevations. That work starts this month and will continue over the next 10 to 12 weeks. Council expects a Phase 1 update in the fall that will guide council’s direction to proceed to Phase 2.

A selection of staff picks line a shelf across from the sales counter at Ivy’s Bookshop. These staff selections, customer service, knowledgeable staff and community involvement, are among the reasons owner Megan Scott maintains there will always be a place in people’s hearts for bookstores. “It’s the fact the neighbourhood knows us,” she says. “We’re a hub. We get people in here daily whether it’s to buy a newspaper or just check in.” Scott, who prefers to read British murder mysteries and contemporary British fiction, has been in the book business since 1986, building on a background as a writer, publicist and book representative before buying Ivy’s in 2001. This weekend, the shop celebrates 50 years of page-turning sales with a party on Saturday. “It really speaks to the community that they’ve supported us that long,” Scott said. “There are not many bookstores that make 50 years. There’s Munro’s and we always consider Ivy’s as Munro’s little sister.” Community contributes heavily to the longevity of the village shop. “The fact that we’ve been a part of it for so long. We’ve got grandchildren coming in,” Scott said. Just last week long-time staffer Shirley St. Pierre said a man visiting from Alberta, who’d come in with his mother as a child, brought his kids to see the village bookstore. “I love it when the kids come in. … They know

Megan Scott is buoyed by the movement to shop local; Ivy’s belongs to the Shop Local Victoria organization. “People are getting the message that if they want their community to survive, they have to support local businesses,” Scott said.

She first worked for original owner Ivy Mickelson who opened the store May 28, 1964. “She was a real character. Smart and astute,” St. Pierre said. “There’s nobody like Ivy. She was a little bit eccentric and warm and generous. Customers loved her. She was a real bookseller and truly supported authors.”

Three owners later some things haven’t changed, customer service is key. “I think books are a slightly different commodity,” Scott said. “A lot of people don’t want to go online. They would rather have that personal interaction.” Scott takes her regular customers into consideration when ordering new stock and calls the women who work for her “truly amazing.” “The people I work with and the customers,” St. Pierre agrees, are the top perk of the job. “It comes down to people.” And people, she feels, will always be ready to buy books. “(Books) have some soul. That’s totally lacking in an electronic device,” she added. “The product, if you call it that, is always interesting, always new and you never know who’s going to walk in the door. There’s always something new.” Visit Ivy’s Bookshop as it celebrates 50 years with a party Saturday that includes prize draws, and special sales from 1 to 4 p.m. at the 2188 Oak Bay Ave. store. “It’s a birthday party so you have to have cake,” Scott added with a smile. cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

First-year swinging a success

In his first year with the University of Victoria Vikes golf team Connor Gann is proving he’s a leader. The Oak Bay High grad led the Vikes men with a second-place finish at the Canadian University/College Championship in Manitoba last Friday. “Connor hit it solid all week and played the par 5’s at 10 under par,” said Vikes interim head coach Justin Clews. “I think he felt confident at this course because the winds were up and he grew up playing in the wind at Victoria Golf Club. I am very pleased with the men’s fourthplace finish which betters our 10th place finish last year in Montreal. This is a great confidence boost heading into the summer break which hopefully carries over into next season.” Fifth-year Vike Megan Woodland placed first for the ladies. The men and women’s teams finished in fourth and third, respectively.

More people, more problems The draft community plan intends to encourage an increase in the population of Oak Bay and its population density and is doing so by infilling residential neighborhoods. Oak Bay is a stable and complete community. Its residents enjoy a high quality of life. There is no risk of that changing. It is obvious when one looks at other large urban areas in Canada that a community like Oak Bay will become a worse place to live if its population and the population density of its residential neighborhoods are increased. More people will mean more vehicles, more congestion, more traffic, more parking problems, more noise, more buildings, more overshadowing that darken adjacent residential properties, more demands upon and repairs of the infrastructure, more interpersonal conflict, more animosity, and more unhappiness. The list can go on and on. It is clear that the effect of the draft plan will be to the benefit of non-residents of Oak Bay who want to live here, at the expense of current residents who will no longer be able to enjoy their properties as they presently do. The plan shouldn’t promote an increase in the population and the densification of residential neighborhoods, both of which will have patently obvious and permanently harmful effects. It should promote the preservation of what is good in Oak Bay, the improvement of what is not, and the protection of homeowners’ current level of enjoyment of their residential properties. Oak Bay should not be subjected to fundamental changes that will only harm it. A plan which promotes an increase in the population of Oak Bay and the population density of its residential neighborhoods will be a shot in Oak Bay’s foot Bruce Filan Oak Bay

Question

of the week

?

My first career lesson: just show up Oak Bay News owner David Black received an honourary Doctor of Laws from the University of Victoria this week. The following is a transcript of his speech. Today is a great day for me. The doctorate is a wonderful honour from a University I have watched grow and flourish into a world-ranked institution. It is also embarrassing because I don’t feel my work is completed yet. Nevertheless, I would like to pass on to the graduating class some lessons I have learned thus far in my career in the hopes they may be of some use. My story is not complex. I received an Engineering degree from UBC and an MBA from Ivey in London. In 1975, I started my own business by buying a small weekly newspaper in Williams Lake. Over the years, with the help of a terrific wife, a father who mentored me, and the hard work of a great many employees, we have grown to 200 publications with revenues of half a billion dollars. I had no plan in 1975 to grow the business like this. My only thought was to publish the best paper I could. I worked long hours because we were in debt and we had a growing family. Over time I came to be an expert in every phase of the business. Because of that I fell in love with publishing. My first career lesson for you then, is just show up. If you are like I was at your age, you have no idea what career will appeal to you. You don’t have to know. Just dive into something. Work hard. The more skill you develop, the more you will enjoy the work. You will know when, or if, it is time to move on to something else. I mentioned my wife and father and what a help they were to me. My second piece of advice is to surround yourself with bright people, both as workmates and friends. Listen to them and help them in return.

Will your children cross picket lines if teachers strike? Answer online at www.vicnews.com

With my four children on our companies’ boards of directors and an excellent management team in place I thought, now that I am over 65, I would be easing back somewhat, enjoying more sailing, and babysitting grandchildren. My only real career regret was that I hadn’t had a chance to practice any engineering. It’s funny how life unfolds. Instead, over the last two years I have embarked on one of the biggest engineering projects in Canada’s history and I am working harder than ever. When not working on Black Press, I am consumed by trying to build a BC oil refinery, pipeline and tanker fleet at a total cost of $32 billion. So my third career message for you is that you cannot know your future. By all means plan. But don’t assume things will go as expected. I will tell you a little about the refinery project because it leads to my final and most important piece of advice. The project is called Kitimat Clean. The refinery will convert Alberta’s bitumen to gasoline and diesel, products which float and evaporate if there is a spill at sea. Bitumen acts differently. If it is spilled off our coast it will sink and we won’t be able to recover it. It will also blanket the intertidal zone and we won’t be able to remove it. The damage could last for hundreds of years. I got into this project to help ensure this doesn’t happen. A world-scale refinery has other great advantages for us all: it will create 10,000 new permanent jobs in BC and it will generate billions of dollars of new taxes annually for government coffers. My children and I are concerned about the environment like most of you are, so we decided to spend an extra $3 billion to build the refinery with new Canadian technology, cutting

Last Week

we asked you:

CO2 emissions by five million tonnes per year. This is equivalent to avoiding the annual emissions of 1.2 million cars. The refinery will be so clean it will more than compensate for the extra CO2 emissions in the oilsands. Clearly we need to ratchet down our use of fossil fuels. But that does not influence whether to build a refinery in Canada. Asia needs more refined fuel every year. If we don’t build the refinery in Canada it will be built in Asia. By shipping our bitumen to Asia for refining, we not only put the ocean at risk and lose the enormous valueadd benefits, the planet will end up with twice the CO2 emissions. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons, our big oil companies are not interested in a new Canadian refinery. The president of one of our largest oil companies told me that he agrees it is viable to refine bitumen in Canada, and that it is nation building at its best, but that no oil company in Alberta will do it. In fact, some oppose it. So it came down to this. If I thought it important enough, I would have to spearhead it. That is what I am doing. I hope by setting high standards we can show the way forward for responsible management of Canada’s bitumen from an economic and an environmental point of view. My final message to you today is simple. When your big challenge or opportunity arises, do the same. Do it better. When you know something is wrong step up. Take a risk. Challenge tradition and fight vested interests. Use your education, experience and networks in a positive way to benefit yourself and your family of course, but whenever you can, always try to improve the world around you as well. The satisfaction that gives you will fulfill you. Go to it graduates and best wishes for the future.

Full-scale strike could stop school Monday Provincial exams begin Wednesday at Oak Bay High Daniel Palmer News staff

The frustration of Oak Bay teachers was palpable this week, as they joined about 300 teachers and supporters picketing the offices of the B.C. Ministry of Education to protest ongoing labour negotiations. On Tuesday night, teachers voted 86 per cent in favour of a full walkout to put maximum pressure on the provincial government at the bargaining table. Should no deal be reached, the earliest possible date for school closures across B.C. would be Monday, June 16 and that could impact the last nine days of the school year. “Parents are telling me they’re taking their kids out of public school to put them in private school, and it’s for exactly the reasons we’re fighting here: smaller classes, one-toone support, teacherlibrarian full-time,” said Benula Larsen, Greater Victoria Teachers Association president. A full strike would close elementary and middle schools while secondary schools would be open only to conduct exams for Grade 10 to 12 students. General exams are slated to begin on Monday at Oak Bay High, with provincial exams starting Wednesday. High school teacher Jeff Laird said he supports the strike vote because classroom pressures have never been worse, as both the number of students and special needs students without additional support continue to increase.

“The kids who need a standard education are not getting it because we’re busy putting out fires with a few students rather than teaching classes,” he said. “What really brought it home is when my four-yearold, Finnegan, is ready for school, I’m worried about the quality of his education.” Teacher Nessie Magee said she’s frustrated people continue to believe the labour dispute comes down to teacher salaries. “This is about the disparity between public education and private education. Right now, our kids are not getting equal opportunity of education. I’ve been teaching since 1983 and I’ve never seen the state of education in as disrepair as it is right now,” Magee said. The province pledged to end its partial lockout of teachers at the end of the school year to allow for summer school. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said he hopes all parties can end the school year on a positive note by reaching a realistic labour deal. “Teachers deserve a raise but their total compensation demands are about four times more than other recent settlements,” he said. The government has twice been ordered by the B.C. Supreme Court to allow teachers control over class sizes and staffing levels, a provision that was stripped from their contracts in 2002. The government is appealing the ruling, but the case won’t be heard until this fall. “The Liberals have it in their power to bar-

Save 50%

gain on class size and composition, but they continue to refuse to do so, despite being ordered twice to do so by the Supreme Court,” said education critic Rob Fleming, VictoriaSwan Lake MLA. “If they put that issue on the table, then I think there’s a deal to be had here.” -with files from Jeff Nagel dpalmer@vicnews.com

Oak Bay High teachers Stephanie Mann, left, and Judy Falkins do their part (May 28) for the rotating strike action across B.C.

Eclectic balances book biography Balancing on a Thread is the definitive biography of one of Canada’s most internationally respected artists, Pat Martin Bates. “PMB” as she is known to everyone, is a uniquely flamboyant and charismatic figure, whose life is marked by a thirst for adventure: re-tracing the route of Alexander the Great, sailing as a deckhand on a replica of Darwin’s Barque, or camping by the tomb of the 13th century Persian poet Rumi. Building on these experiences, she created a body of magical, compelling work that combines complex ideas, philosophies and mythologies with transformative new artistic techniques, many of which she pioneered herself. The author, Patricia Bovey is one of Canada’s most prominent art historians and former director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Aside from the 6-speed manual, Subaru offers their version of a Continuously Variable Transmission, aka the Lineartronic CVT. While some might not be a fan of this type of transmission, don’t knock it until you try it. Subaru does an excellent job with the gear simulations and I didn’t feel the drone of the system under hard acceleration, even with the 4-cylinder. Paint that Nissan clean

Washing a car can be a chore and a costly one at that. In response, Nissan in Europe has begun tests on innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt, meaning drivers may never have to clean their car again. The specially engineered super-hydrophobic and oleophobic paint, which repels water and oils, has been applied to the all-new European market Nissan Note to create the world’s first self-cleaning car. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Moving up a step, the XLT trim allowed a 3.0-litre V6 option and a tow package that bumped trailer-hauling capability to 1,588 kg (3500 lb). The top-line Limited came with leather, dual climate control air conditioning and Audiophile sound system, more power features, and the V6 engine. Four-wheel-drive was an option with every trim level. If an urban commute is your vehicles primary job and good fuel economy is important there’s also a hybrid version of the Escape. It has a smoother and quieter powertrain than the first generation Escape Hybrid,

Reduce Belly Fat! Increase Energy! Testosterone levels begin to diminish in men around age 30. In fact, by the time men are 60 years old, they typically produce 60% less testosterone than they did at age 20 (a man’s sexual peak). Many men over the age of 35 may already be feeling the effects of lower testosterone including:

Increased Belly Fat Low Energy

Low Libido Mood Changes

Decreased Muscle Strength Prostate Problems and more...

Unfortunately at the same time testosterone is decreasing, estrogen levels are increasing, causing further muscle loss and gain in body fat, making it extremely difficult to maintain a healthy metabolism. Along with a program of proper nutrition and regular exercise, researchers have discovered a group of naturally proven nutrients that can help you safely reduce excess estrogen while maximizing testosterone levels. perform

Simon Pollock, 11, is a Grade 5 student at Sir James Douglas elementary in Fairfield and keeps himself very busy with sports and volunteer activities. Among his athletic highlights have included winning the city elementary boys 800-metre running title in 2013 and 2014 and going undefeated in his cross-country races the past two years. He also plays for the atom A Victoria Racquet Club hockey team and is assistant captain of his Victoria lacrosse team. Simon also plays basketball in the night league and for SJD and has run in the Victoria Youth Triathlon the past five years. At school his favourite subjects are math and P.E. He also volunteered with the SJD Green Team, was emcee at an anti-bullying day and help set up the Spring Fair at SJD.

Mom does her best to give daughter a fashion sense It should come as no surprise that my younger daughter is taking a year off her fine arts degree to attend a 12-month fashion design program. From the day she set foot in Kindergarten, she exhibited signs of fashion … determination. I’ve heard some parents select and purchase clothes that their children actually wear. I used to see these children, splendidly groomed in cute, kid-sized versions of trendy clothes. It’s not that I’m particularly trendy myself, but I always assumed my children would inherit my taste in clothing (i.e., they’d wear little jeans and denim jackets; maybe a Canucks’ jersey once in awhile). But Sierra

Susan Lundy shunned my beloved denim and clung to her own unique sense of dress. The first sign that something was amiss occurred when I took her shopping, and she selected a dress for Kindergarten. A dress? “Sweetie, look at these cool jeans.” The dress had a black velour bodice (really? velour?) with little coloured buttons on the front and a multicoloured, mostly pink (pink!) flowery skirt. She clutched it as we drove home. She

found a pair of tights and a pair of little black (shiny!) shoes and wore the outfit to Kindergarten the next day. And the following day. And the day after. And so on. In fact, she would wear nothing else for six months. Same dress. Same tights. Same shoes. I tried luring her with other clothing, buying dresses and placing them in visible spots. But the growth of her wardrobe seemed to spur her determination to wear one dress. Once in a while I found myself hiding the dress or slipping it into the wash. “Can’t find it! How about one of your other 25 dresses?” Then I discovered she was hiding it, stuffing it in the bed or slipping it under a carefully placed

Today’s senior living communities are vibrant, active, resident focused communities, respectfully supporting the individuality of each resident. Each community has its own personality – just like all of us. Make no mistake – these are NOT the “Nursing Homes” your great aunt Mary used to live in! A good entry level community could be a Retirement Community. Sometimes these are also called Independent or Supportive Living Housing. These individual apartment style communities offer a large choice of services and amenities for the residents. Many new communities can be compared to a cruise ship or hotel environment, while still maintaining a comfortable, home environment. Most retirement communities include a beautifully appointed dining room, private dining room, social rooms, theatre, library, fitness areas, etc. The ‘hospitality’ services you can expect include meals, laundry, cleaning, social and recreation programs, 24-hour emergency response and transportation. There are also some optional fee-for-services made available as per your needs such as hair salon, aesthetics, massage, personal laundry, etc.

“Coincidence or bad karma? It was an identical dress. Sierra was thrilled; I admitted defeat.” blanket in her toy box. Finally, its velvety bodice became threadbare and she agreed to retire it. I danced a little jig of happiness around the house. A short time later we attended a niece’s birthday party where my mother-in-law excitedly brought out a bag. She explained that the child of a friend saw this dress and wanted Sierra to have it. Coincidence or bad karma? It was an identical dress. Sierra was thrilled; I admitted defeat. A year later she attached herself to a single pair of Osh Kosh overalls; thankfully I found an identical pair in one size larger around Christmas time, because by then, she had gone through both knees and was close to bursting through the back side. Every September, as school rolled around, I thought, this is it. This year, she will wear a variety of clothes (specifically, jeans and a denim jacket). But every year, she found another attachment. Shuddering, I sent her off to Grade 3 one morning wearing three-quarter length pants, big purple, rubber boots and the blue (velour) shirt she’d been wearing for the past four weeks. But then I stopped short in the schoolyard, stunned as I looked around and saw the girls in Sierra’s class. All of them: short pants, velour shirts and boots. Sierra’s fashion “sense” had apparently caught on. And perhaps that’s not a bad thing to have on your fashion school resume.

Parents find way to unburden themselves

Counselling can go a long way toward reducing one’s stress Don Descoteau News staff

The ability to talk to someone about problems in one’s life can be a huge relief for parents under stress. At the 1-Up Single Parent Resource Centre, counsellor and educational programs co-ordinator Cheryl Dick hears regularly from clients about life’s challenges, from problems with relationships to financial stressors to simply dealing with the emotional and physical workload that comes with being a single parent. For the most part, she says, it boils down to convincing people they have the resources within to get on the top side of issues that are causing them stress and anxiety. “Even though people are struggling, we certainly see how resilient people are or how resourceful they are,” she says. “Often it’s just reminding people about the strength they do have. You kind of get blindered when you’re in the middle of a crisis. In some ways it’s helping them get perspective again.” Communication issues and difficulties managing conflict are just two common themes with which Dyck helps clients. “There’s a lot of people who are struggling with relationships, whether that’s

with their ex-partner or someone else,” she says. “It can be relationships with family and friends, and even relationships with their kids, who may be starting to act out or are having anxiety over separating with their parents.” Many clients using the centre’s counselling services don’t have a broad social network or family nearby to relieve some of the workload. Poverty can play a role in the mental state of single parents as well, Dyck says. If a parent can’t afford to put their kids in sports, or perhaps can’t find a job that pays enough to cover daycare costs, it can lead to isolation. Seeking counselling can be a good way for any parent to unburden themselves of the pressures and stressors of daily life, Dyck says. “It really is a place where they can feel safe to get the load off their chest, whatever it is that’s irking them or taking up a lot of energy. They get a neutral place to sort that out. We can give them some practical things to think about … that helps them explore new options, helps them undo a stuck pattern.” While clients who receive one-on-one counselling at 1-Up must be registered members of the centre – there’s a six-month wait list for the service – other local organizations provide low-cost or sliding-scale counselling for parents in financial difficulties. Among them are Citizens Counselling, located in Quadra Village, and B.C. Families in Transition in

Helps to promote healthy mood balance, relaxation, use as a sleep aid and mental stress. Stress is one of the main causes of high blood pressure. Truthful experience by people: < I am calm now in stressful situations! In the past 10 years I had a very short fuse, because my job is quite unpredictable. After I started Bell Calming Chronic Stress #66 the difference was amazing. My reactions to stressful situations are totally changed. I also have more energy, too. I don’t yell at others. I have more patience and I am much happier as well. Thank you. Mary-Anne Thompson, 61, Lasalle, ON < I suffered greatly from anxiety. #66 NPN 80041855 Standard treatments did not make me feel good. So my mother bought Bell Calming Chronic Stress #66 and it has been helping me a lot. I am on my 3rd bottle. Remington Fletcher, 19, Ponty Pool, ON < I have a very high stress career in the film industry. There was no time for relaxation or meditation as you are on demand for 12-15 hours a day with no breaks. Since using Bell #66I am able to focus on the tasks at hand with more patience. Thank you for your help! Christina Ollson, 36, Burnaby, BC <It’s exactly one year since we began using Bell Calming Chronix Stress #66 for our two sons. Our local health food store recommended it. Both of our sons suffer from anxiety disorders. Our older son (14) was going through puberty and had become quite unmanageable, because he is much larger than I am. We are delighted with the immediate results. Our older son became his former sweet self and our younger son’s (12) anxiety is dramatically reduced. Thank you so much. Q: WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR SELLING MY HOME DURING THE SUMMER? Mow your lawn regularly – If you’re watering regularly, grass grows especially fast when the hot sun is beating down so make sure to keep it trim and tidy. Trim bushes and plant flowers if you have time and look into painting your house number on your curb. Keep it bright inside – Increase the perceived size of the home by opening it up, removing heavy drapes and pulling all your blinds up. The nose knows – Sometimes air fresheners can work against you. Vanilla can smell great, but it can overwhelm if not used sparingly. If needed, consider natural fragrances such as cut roses, flower petals.

SELLER’S TIP | Unless you’re motivated, don’t expect buyers to beat down your door in summer

Market heading into summer with a bang Balanced market good for buyers, sellers: VREB prez Don Descoteau News staff

When the numbers show continued growth in the real estate market, it’s hard not to be excited. May’s sales figures for the Greater Victoria region showed the best numbers since 2010, according to Victoria Real Estate Board president and active agent Tim Ayres. But the best of 2014 may well be yet to come. “I haven’t seen a start to June like this in a while,” he said this week, when asked for his thoughts on the state of the local market. “It’s healthy.” Forget the old expression about March coming in like a lion. Early sales for this month have local agents on pace to knock out the June 2013 numbers. That said, Ayers and others continue to describe the Capital Region housing market as “balanced,” meaning neither buyers nor sellers have the upper hand in negotiations. “It’s one of those funny markets,” he said. “You don’t really have the buyers beating down your door. At the same time, we don’t really see an end to the busy season.” From a cost perspective, prices are remaining fairly constant, with only a one-per-cent upward blip in the region’s benchmark price for a typical home. With no pressure up or down on

The selection of single family homes on the Greater Victoria real estate market is good, but well-priced, well-shown homes continue to sell quickly and command prices closest to asking price. price, and interest rates remaining low, there’s less chaos in the market and agents have more time to spend working with buyers to ensure they find a home that is the right fit, Ayers said. “Whether you’re a Realtor or a seller, you want to be sure the buyer wants your property. There’s less complications that way.” Bill Ethier, president of Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, noted that when it’s a buyers or sellers’ market, it’s usually a sign that something not

so good is on the horizon. Having a balanced market helps “put confidence back in the marketplace,” he said. “These times are like a nice, stoked fire going along nicely,” Ethier said. “Buyers have a chance to look around and take time and be cautious, but at the same time we’re seeing multiple offers, like any market, if it shows well and is priced well, it’s going to go quickly.” He said the $450,000 to $600,000 price range continues to be the

sweet spot for sales in the region. Helping keep the market on an even keel is the absence of impending regulatory changes, such as the shorter amortization periods from late 2012 that prompted many people to jump into the market quickly ahead of that change. The relatively low cost of borrowing helps too, he said. “We’ve been told we can’t maintain these low rates forever, but we’ve had this for four years now.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com
