The Castlegar Sculpturewalk has been an amazingly successful venture.

They are celebrating their fifth year in 2014 and the 32 sculptures have been installed in the community’s downtown. This year they have attracted artists from as far away as Belgium.

“I think the public will be delighted with the sculptures on display this year” says Executive Director Joy Barrett. “With Sculpturewalk’s reputation growing, we’re receiving applications from artists further afield. It’s exciting to see the international attention given to our local artists, and the diversity of the new artists’ work in this year’s Sculpturewalk.”

Each year, the viewing public vote for their favourite sculpture for the People’s Choice Award and the winning sculpture is bought by the City to stay in its permanent collection. To date, thanks to the People’s Choice Award and Sculpturewalk’s Sales & Leasing program, Castlegar is now home to over fifty sculptures.

The success of Castlegar’s program is far reaching. This year the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture (RCAC) has collaborated with the Castlegar Sculpturewalk to bring “Rusty the Horse” to town.

The RCAC has leased the sculpture, created by Nelson based artist Cedar Mueller, for one year as part of an initiative by the Castlegar Sculpturewalk to expand their annual sculpture walk into a more regional initiative. They are doing so by leasing out sculptures, which they showed the previous year, to neighbouring communities.

RCAC had also commissioned the installation of “The Storytellers”, a sculpture of ravens in trees, created by Andrew Raney from Salmo, outside Rossland’s public library. Another permanent sculpture, depicting two bears playing, has been commissioned by Nelson artist John McKinnon, who won the juried competition last year, and will be placed in front of the post-office later this spring. These efforts coincide nicely with the installation of the Olaus statue in front of the Bank of Montreal building by the Spirit of Red group.

Hopes are to expand the initiative and create more spaces for sculptures throughout our downtown area. Individual and business sponsors can support the initiative by contributing financially towards the lease of a sculpture or collaborate on a lease, or by providing a location.

The City of Nelson is into its second year of collaborating with Castlegar Sculpturewalk with the lease of five new sculptures. The public art will be on loan to the city for 12 months, after which point individuals or businesses can choose to lease or purchase a piece they’ve enjoyed to keep it here longer. The new sculptures include works from local artists as well as those from as far away as Quebec and Oregon.

MURDERESS ROLE ` FOR LOCAL STAR Hannah Jarvis Lingard has been performing in local theatre productions since she was five years old. But she’s never been given the chance to tackle a role like Roxie Hart, the lead character in the upcoming production of Chicago at the Capitol.

“This is a lot more adult than anything I’ve done before,” said Lingard. “I’m really putting myself out there.”

Lingard said many of her costumes are “basically undergarments,” and fans of her earlier work may be surprised to see her transformation from a cute mouse in a pantomime Christmas production of “Puss in Boots” 15 years ago to the sultry vaudevillian criminal she will be playing from June 12 to 15.

“Roxie’s a little more sassy than Hannah in real life. Hannah’s lovely and has a sort of humble confidence, so this is a whole new side of her we’re seeing,” said Desiree Hall, the assistant musical director.

“People in this community know her, and they know she can do it. They’ve never seen her do so much though,” said Hall. “People who know her will be like `Oh! This is a totally different side of her.’”

Lindgard, who considers herself a singer first, dancer second and actor third, said this is easily the most demanding role she’s ever played, partly because it involves a variety of all those different skill sets. She estimates she’s on stage for three quarters of the production.

“It’s a little bit scary but it’s a great role physically and vocally,” she said. When asked if she’s nervous to expose this new side of herself to the theatre community, she laughed. “I’ve decided to consider it empowering, not terrifying.”

For her audition, Lingard prepared “Nowadays” from the show and “Poor Johnny One Note” from the musical Babes in Arms. She said she wasn’t sure, walking out, whether she had nailed it or not. But Sydney Black, who will be playing opposite Lingard as co-conspirator Velma Kelly, called her a few days after the audition.

“Sydney left a mysterious message on my phone like `We have a very important matter to discuss’ and so I called and they told me I had the part. It took a while for it to sink in, I think.”

Though Roxie is a blond, Lingard is a natural brunette. She told The Nelson Star she hasn’t yet decided if she’ll dye her signature locks, so audiences will have to attend the show to see for themselves.

Rehearsals are now in full swing, and Lingard said she’s been loving the process.

Lingard saw the Academy Award-winning movie adaptation of Chicago back when it was released in 2002, and said she never would’ve imagined she would get the chance to fill Renee Zellweger’s stilettos. She said if she were to make a list of the top roles she hoped to play, this one would be at the very top.

“It’s different because I get to step outside and see the big picture,” she said. “There are numbers where I’m basically a prop and everyone’s dancing around me. It’s amazing.”

Chicago tells the story of two women who find themselves facing trial in 1920s Chicago.

They attempt to achieve fame in order to avoid punishment for their crime, with the help of fast-talking lawyer Billy Flynn.

“The original choreographer, Bob Fosse, he’s huge in the musical theatre world,” said Lingard. “So those are pretty big shoes to fill. But he’s been integral. He’s making everything look so slick. I love him.”

Lingard’s favourite number is “Me and My Baby,” a song that was cut from the movie version.

In the song, Roxie sings “Look at my baby, my baby and me, a dream of a duo, no don’t you agree? Why keep it mum when there’s nothing to hide? And what I feel I must reveal. It’s more than I can keep inside.”

When asked what aspirations she has for her various creative pursuits, Lingard said she never wants to lose her passion for singing, dancing and acting.

“I never want to stop doing any of those things. It’s kind of like an addiction,” she said.

Shows will be running June 12 through 15 at 8 p.m., with two matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and are available at www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca

SIX STAGES AT THE SHAMBHALA MUSIC FESTIVAL BRAVELY EXPLORE NEW REALMS IN ARCHITECTURE AND TECHNOLOGY. “Less is a bore!” Robert Venturi’s declaration in the 1970s challenged Modernism to be more expressive and iconic. His inspiration... the Las Vegas strip.

Some of the greatest contributions to our built environment have come from such improbable sources.

A mental breakdown inspired the work of Buckminster Fuller, forever changing the way architects think of structures. The World’s Fairs have given us Vancouver’s SkyTrain. Rock and rollers like U2 have pioneered synergies between architecture and technology to create multi- sensory extravaganzas. Festivals like Burning Man are testing grounds for art and sustainability. And, here in the Kootenays, those who design and build the stages at the Shambhala Music Festival are proudly placed in this lineage of trailblazers.

Each of Shambhala’s six stages provides a unique experience, from the expansive AMPhitheatre to the labyrinth-like Fractal Forest. Music and performers are carefully paired with a suitable stage. Craig Mullin, a local DJ who regularly performs at the festival, remarks: “If I can’t relate

to the architecture of a space, it is difficult to find inspiration for my music.”

The Village stage, once known as Ewok Village, suspends

catwalks, bridges and platforms high in the trees. It beautifully merges architecture and nature (not to mention a 200,000 watt sound system) to enhance both.

The Pagoda stage, an iconic three story structure, is a container (for DJs and musicians), a projector (of light and sound) and a canvas (for innovative video mapping technology). Stages like the Pagoda help Shambhala attract musicians from around the world.

Year after year, these stages are built larger, tweaked and improved upon. This additive, organic approach

to design recognizes the built environment as an evolving ‘process’. One of the oldest stages at the festival, The Grove is a classic example of Shambhala architecture - luminescent forms and throbbing music deeply rooted in the forest.

Mother Nature is omnipresent at Shambhala. The ebb and flow of the Salmo River forces the Living Room stage to relocate every year. Designer and builder of the stage, Miche DuVernet notes that this is a blessing in disguise, classifying the Living Room as a ‘temporary structure’.

Free from many of the building codes applying to conventional structures, and without corporate sponsorship, Miche prefabricates the stage at his barn in the Slocan Valley. He skillfully explores the realm of ideas, innovative construction techniques, unorthodox low-tech materials, lighting and digital projection.

Tiny Lights Festival in Ymir is differentiating themselves from other festivals, not only with their lineup, but by introducing a Sustainability Village.

In fact, anyone planning on attending the festival might be asked to participate in generating the power for required for the musicians and sound system.

Green Power Energy organizes festivals by offering an environmentally sustainable alternative generator. The company is the brainchild of Erin Sharp and Ash Bigdeli, who have created a portable hybrid, semi-intelligent generator system combining solar, wind turbine, micro hydro electric and the pedal power of humans on bicycles. “If there’s no sunlight, there’s probably wind and water. If there’s none of that, there’s always people,”Bigdeli laughs.

“And what’s most exciting is that we’ve extended it to our performance space by adding a sustainable stage!” she exclaims.

Is he proud to contribute so significantly to the festival? To build a place for community to gather and celebrate? Miche is suitably humble when he says: “It’s all part of creating the vibe”.

In 1961, an avant-garde collective called Archigram proposed Instant City - a technological event that occupied a town with stages and structures to overstimulate its inhabitants. In time, Instant City would move on, leaving behind a more cultured society. Is Shambhala our Instant City? Do these six stages have a greater impact on our culture?

“I don’t know,” says Craig Mullin “But, one thing I know is that the four days of Shambhala generates enough positive energy to inspire many amazing people to live in the area for the other 361 days of the year.”

There’s a lot of music festivals that happen in the Kootenays each summer. For music lovers looking for a new and unique festival experience, it can be difficult to know where to direct their attention.

“In an effort to host a festival that is becoming more sustainable, this year we created the Sustainability Village, says Festival Director Carla Stephenson. Everyone from our workshop presenters to vendors had to satisfy a selection of criteria that promotes local, organic and education.

Our intention is to produce as little waste as possible and use recycling or composting to deal with it.”

For Tiny Lights, Sharp and Bigdeli will employ the combination of solar and bike generator. The Nelson Bike Co-op will supply six bikes to be hooked up to the generator and volunteers will take turns riding to power the stage and keep the party pumping.

GPE will host a workshop called Green Power & Sustainable Festivals 101. The workshop looks at the technology to create a DIY solar - bike trainer

generator like the one they’re using at Tiny Lightsl.

As part of their sustainability mandate, Tiny Lights is the first festival in BC to ban plastic water bottles. Water will be treated using Bokashi composting and turned in soil for the community.

Throughout the festival volunteers will sort all remaining waste to be appropriately recycled or reused. “We’re expecting to get through this festival creating a single bag of garbage, says Stephenson. It’s crazy to think that this is all so doable!”

SUMMER CONCERTS IN THE COURTYARD RETURN

Saturday, June 7 will see the launch of a new summer series of eclectic house concerts at the Ravencourt B&B in Upper Passmore, an amazing straw-bale mansion with an incredible courtyard. Admission is by donation and all proceeds go to the musicians. If weather allows, performances will take place in the inner courtyard of this two story home where your hosts Dorothea Schlichting and Peter Hauser wait to greet you.

This year the season begins with Black Sheep Blonde, a group with connections to the Selkirk College music program.

It consists of Elia Nelson, Nathan Stilwell, Rich Rabnett and Dilann McPherson on vocals. They fuse elements of jazz, ambient and latin music with some hip hop thrown in along the way. The concert gets underway at 7 p.m.

On Friday, July 4, Vancouver duo Vino and Forte will perform, with their unique blend of classical and Balkan-flamenco music. Oriano White plays piano and Ivan Tucakov is featured on guitar. The market will run each Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through to September 24, offering an amazing mix of local produce, plants, prepared foods, body care, and hand-made arts and crafts. Customers can rest assured that they are supporting the local economy due to the fact that 80 percent of each vendor’s wares must be made locally to be sold at the market. Come on down to this market every Wednesday, you will find fresh local produce and locally made products including jewellery, pottery, paintings, natural body care items, essential oils, fresh flowers, garden stepping stones, clothing, and more. here have been car enthusiasts for as long as there have been automobiles and Trail is no exception. June 28 will be the 6th Annual Smoke ´n Steel “Cruisin´ the Columbia” Show & Shine. This event will be held in Gyro park which features a grass area for parking exhibits on and numerous shade trees to keep things cool. There will be a little something there for everyone so bring the family down and enjoy the day perusing the vehicles.

Show opens to the public at 11:00 a.m. and will run to 3:00 p.m.

In GENERAL under CELLULAR turn off Enable 3G and Enable LTE. In BRIGHTNESS & WALLPAPER turn off Auto- Brightness 2. Stop your music with a timer. To use this cool feature go to CLOCK > TIMER > WHEN TIMER ENDS and scroll down and tap STOP PLAYING. You can then set a timer and tap start.

Now you can play any music and it will stop when the timer is finished.

Robotic Pocket Printer. What?

Everything in today’s society is going mobile.

Our phones, tablets and laptops are able to allow us to leave the office or home while still being connected to our work on the go.

A Kickstarter campaign by ZUtA Labs is trying to make it a realty for a little robot printer that prints one page per minute to be shipped by 2015.

Students from Jerusalem College of Technology have created this supersmall printer that sits atop the paper and rolls around using inkjet technology. It can hold an ink cartridge that the maker claims, to produce 1,000 pages, will charge through a Micro-USB cable using a lithium polymer battery that will keep it powered for up to an hour. This robotic printer connects directly to smartphones and PCs, allowing users to print on any size piece of paper.

“We looked at printers today, and we saw big bulky boxes with the printhead inside moving from left to right,” said Zuta Labs designer Jonathan Stein. “Then we thought,

‘Why not just take the printer out, and put it on a robot?’”

The printer works by being activated by sliding a hatch at the bottom, which revels the inkjet. The first version right now prints in grayscale only. This little device is based on a omni-wheel system that allows the printer to accurately turn and drive in any direction. With the help of a high resolution optical laser sensor, the bot is able to control the movement, speed and placement to keep the paper stable when it is in use.

The physical appearance is about 10 centimeters high, 11.5 centimeters in diameter and will have a cover made from polycarbonate. Currently the print quality of the prototype can reach 96x192 dpi, but the creators are creating the final product to have a higher resolution and be able to print in full colour.

Word is spreading about this little pocket robots, there was even an offer from Microsoft to present at the event THINKNEXT in Israel.

La Dolce Vita “I don’t care if we don’t need more white wines,” Angela said after her first sip of gewürztraminer, “I’m going to buy another six bottles of this next time.”

The “next time” she was referring to meant another visit to Silver Sage Winery, which has become one of our favourite stops on visits to the Okanagan.

In the years since that first visit we have dropped in often, never failing to be astonished at how Anna Manola has carried on. With the support of a loving family, she has kept the dream she and Victor had alive and continues to make wonderful wines.

Located on Ryegrass Road, just west of Black Sage Road and only a short hop from Oliver, Silver Sage consists of 25 acres of meticulously cared for vines, a huge collection of rose bushes, wine-making facility and a building that includes a marvelous tasting room, bed and breakfast and a large banquet room, perfect for wedding receptions.

For me, Silver Sage Winery continues to be the subject of odd coincidences. A dozen years ago Angela and I met Anna Manola at a large fall wine festival in Penticton.

We fell in love with The Sage, the wild sage-infused wine that has become a family favourite with turkey dinners. We stopped at the winery on our way home to do a tasting and the following Saturday I was happily sorting the purchases made on our trip. I was kneeling to place bottles on the lower racks of my wine cellar. Angela came downstairs tell me that she had just heard on the radio that Victor Manola and Frank Supernak had died in a tragic accident at the winery. The chills ran down my spine as I looked down at my hand and realized I was holding a bottle of The Sage in my hand.

As I was writing this column on a Thursday morning, a friend dropped into my office for a chat. He mentioned his wife’s favourite winery.

“I can’t remember what it’s called but the owner died in a winery accident,” he said. I told him the

When we visited a few months ago my intent was only to purchase a case of wine for my sister in Calgary and some bottles of The Sage for us.

We were on our way home and I didn’t plan to taste, but Angela decided she would. With each successive sample, she oohed and aahed, inviting me to take a tiny sip.

The white wines are remarkable, consistently different from most other wines in the Okanagan.

They are invariably luscious and full-bodied and offer up huge aromatics that leave one’s senses reeling. Even more unique is the way the wines play on the palate. The initial impression, right at the front of the mouth and tongue, is of

sweetness. But as the liquid is distributed around the mouth the fruit flavours explode. After the swallow, one realizes that the sweetness is less from residual sugars than from Manola’s ability to keep the intense flavours of the grapes right through the winemaking process and into the bottle. The Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc and The Sage all have this characteristic.

Silver Sage Winery is also well known, deservedly, for its dessert wines. One of the province’s must unique wines is The Flame, which has a hot pepper bottled in late harvest Gewurz.

Serve it ice cold and be blown away by the heat that soon spreads through your mouth! Each pepper has its own heat level, so it is quite impossible to know what to expect with each bottle. Think of it as a little surprise gift.

On our first visit after the deaths of her husband and friend, Anna told us how the simple act of taking samples of fermenting wine from tall vats had turned into tragedy.

Tear-filled eyes could not hide the strength that emanates from within her, though. She and Victor had left their home in Rumania in search of a better life in Canada, and her steely determination to continue with their dream was obvious.

What Anna Manola has accomplished in the past 12 years is nothing short of remarkable, and it’s testament to the supportive family around her.

Visitors to the wine room today get not a hint of sadness as they are entertained and amused throughout their tasting. It isn’t unusual to hear howls of laughter as we walk toward the door, admiring the hundreds of rose bushes that were planted in Victor’s memory. Silver Sage Winery is one of the province’s true not-to-be-missed wine tourism experiences.

One interesting bit of information that I just found out, is that these acai berries pack more protein than an egg. 7.59 percent of the weight of the Acai pulp is from amino acids (19 currently identified in the berry) and since amino acids are the building blocks of protein, it is pretty neat that you have over 8 grams of protein in a 100 gram serving of Acai.

Grilled Corn with Roasted Peanuts Thai Style Last month we had a Thai recipe but here is one more for summer. Unlike other grilled corn recipes, this one requires the corn to be husked prior to the grilling process.

This one will do well with barbeque season.

KELOWNA PILSNER – TREE BREWING COMPANY A crisp and maybe the driest of the beers we sampled, Kelowna is a good quality beer. It has a very slight hop taste, light to medium body and pours a nice golden color. Grainy is a comment that came up again and again, that’s not a bad thing necessarily, just not to everyone’s taste. If you threw this into the cooler this summer you’ll likely end up a happy camper.

1. First step is to brush the grill with oil and preheat to medium. Then whisk together your ingredients in a bowl, leaving out the peanuts and corn. Take the peanuts and pulse in a food processor until they are finely ground. Transfer to a large plate.

2. Place corn on the grill and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until browned and lightly charred in spots, turning occasionally.

Brush with half of coconut milk mixture and grill 2 minutes more. Brush with remaining coconut mixture and roll in crushed peanuts until coated. Enjoy!

But when I heard that the Civic Theatre was offering an opportunity for felinedom to graduate to the Big Screen—and raise money for the Nelson SPCA—I said: I’m in.

Just For Cats: Internet Cat Video Festival runs Thursday, June 12 at the Nelson Civic Theatre. Doors open for the Kitty Corral Adoption (you’re just going to have to come to see what that is) at 6:30 p.m., with the show at 7:30 p.m.

Jason, the theatre manager, told me that Nelson funnyman Lucas Myers is going to MC, but he can’t upstage us no matter how funny he thinks he is.

There’s live music by Clara Venice, who plays a thing called a theramin.

It is spooky how she gets that thing to work without even touching it (Clara could be an honourary cat; I didn’t touch that glass of milk that fell off the table, either) and besides that, she’s purrrrrrty. A live dance performance by the Show-Cats is sure to be slinky.

Jason tells me there will be some local cat video content, too, and asked me to remind you that the deadline for your video submissions is Monday, June 2 at noon. On Youtube you can see us in boxes, chasing dogs, dancing, singing, and even sitting around looking grumpy. I know you can do better that that.

If all that isn’t enough, the cause should be. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) does good work (and I’ve almost completely forgotten about my testicles). Tell me you’re coming, or I’ll leave my next hairball in your shoe.

his is an invitation to take a break from yard work on Sunday, June 1 and come to the comfortable Slocan Community Library to hear a presentation by two Kootenay authors.

At 1 p.m., Argenta author Ellen Burt will read from her book When the Path is Not a Straight Line. Part nature writing and part adventure story, Burt’s memoir tells of a life lived in deep contact with the natural world.

In the words of Luanne Armstrong, “This book reflects the wisdom of someone who looks with a clear and intense gaze at life and has written wonderfully perceptive tales of bears, boats, owls, natural disasters, ancient cedars and more.”

She comes recommended as someone who “does a very enjoyable reading.”

Burt will appear as part of her tour supported by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and CBT. Art Joyce will be launching his new book Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest: Canada’s Home Children in the West. The book is a captivating blend of memoir and history, offering a personal and highly readable narrative on the subject of Western Canada’s “Home Children.”

Between 1869 and the early 1930s, more than 100,000 impoverished children were rounded up from the streets of Britain to be used as labourers in Canadian homes, often as little more than slaves.

Today there are close to four million descendants of British Home Children in Canada.

Readings at the Slocan Community Library are free. They feature a Questions and Answers segment, a chance to meet the authors and the volunteers who keep our gem of a community library happening, plus light refreshments.

Get ready for Chicago with this

Rope Updo

his is my latest tattoo done by Josh from Divine Alchemy Tattoos. This Thai art-inspired tat is Garuda, a bird-like creature that appears in Hinduism and Buddhism. He is the vehicle of Vishnu and symbolizes strength, knowledge, bravery and discipline. Balinese tradition venerated Garuda as “the lord of all flying creatures,” and “the majestic king of birds.” Garuda is the national symbol of Indonesia and Thailand. In Buddhist literature, the Garuda lives in the legendary Himavanta forest and is regarded as semi-divine or supernatural, his deeds being righteous and merciful.

In this tattoo Garuda is defeating a Naga (a race of intelligent serpents). The image of Garuda is often used as the charm or amulet to protect the bearer from snake attack and its poison, since the king of birds is an implacable enemy and “devourer of serpents.”

I looked through a lot of different tattoo designs online, but decided to come up with a drawing of my own. I loved the history and style so I created the above tattoo.
