Youth Unlimited looking for partners for project New YU-Turn Housing to help at-risk individuals in Lacombe community

outh Unlimited needs funds to get their YU-Turn Housing project off the ground.

Char Lockhart, YU-Turn housing coordinator said that currently funds are the only thing stalling the project.

“We would love to have it done yesterday,” said Lockhart. “We would love within the next six to eight months to have funding in place to develop this. To really get this off the ground.”

However, Youth Unlimited is looking for more than just sponsorship money. It is also looking for individuals who are interested and invested in the community and this project to partner with.

“We will not be able to run this program without community involvement.”

Lockhart added this notion is a bit daunting, but it is also very exciting. She said that getting the community involved in the program makes the community stronger, the program stronger and the individuals who go through the program stronger.

“It builds community on so many levels,” she said.

YU-Turn is a supportive independence housing project from Youth Unlimited. Lockhart said that, ideally, the project would see a large duplex built in the community that would have space for five beds for young people in the program to use in each unit. In addition, each of the two units in the duplex would also have permanent ‘house parents’ who live in the unit and work with those going through the program.

The YU-Turn Housing project is much more to Youth Unlimited than just a building for people to live in though. It is a program that teaches life skills and gives people the know-how to become fully independent.

Basically the program is aimed at young people who want to become productive members of society, but don’t have the resources to accomplish that themselves, said Lockhart. She added that the program is designed to address the whole person and is tailored to each individual.

When someone enters the pro-

gram, they will be assessed to determine which skills they need to develop. Youth workers will then collaborate with the individual’s social worker, guardian or parent to personalize the program for that person. Once the program is designed, youth workers work with the individual to complete it.

As to what that program entails, Lockhart said it can be things as simple as learning the importance of bathing and suitable hygiene or building a resume. It will also teach concepts like responsibility and why those are important.

These may seem like simple tasks and ideas to many people, but Lockhart said that many of the individuals who would use the program have been so deprived of resources and support that they have never learned the basics. They don’t know how to do something as simple as how to cook or do laundry, or why those things are important.

The program is open to young people between the ages of 16 and 22. It is available to anyone who thinks they can make use of the program, but specifically targeted towards at-risk individuals.

“There is really no limitation other than their desire to participate.”

Lockhart said that ‘at-risk’ is a term that can be difficult to define.

She added Youth Unlimited defines at-risk as anyone who is in danger of becoming involved, or has already been involved in cycles of addiction, poverty and/or abuse and don’t already have the resources or people in their lives who can support and help them through those challenges.

Therefore, YU-Turn Housing will cater to a wide range of individuals, said Lockhart. From kids escaping abusive families, to young adults exiting a foster home, to children who are couch surfing, to young adults learning how to support themselves and get a job.

Most likely, young people who enter into the volunteer program with be with YU-Turn Housing between four and 18 months, said Lockhart. However, there is potential for some to be there for up to four years, depending on how they progress through the program.

Mayor signs notice of intent on St. Andrew’s designation

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The City of Lacombe has made the next step in a somewhat lengthy process to bring the community its first-ever municipally designated historic site.

At a regular meeting of council on June 9th, council gave first and second reading to a bylaw designating St. Andrew’s United Church as a Municipal Historic Resource. After a unanimous vote, Mayor Steve Christie also signed a notice of intent regarding the designation.

The actual designation, which will be completed Aug. 25th when council gives third and final reading to the new bylaw, is the final step in a process that began five years ago.

Councillor Peter Bouwsema, who has been involved in that process from the beginning, said that the accomplishment represented the culmination of several years of hard work.

He also commented on how beneficial it is for Lacombe, already a community known for its history,

to make these designations and preserve its history.

“This is just another reason for people to come to Lacombe,” said Bouwsema. He added that, while Lacombe has reached its first milestone by making its first Municipal Historic Resource designation, it is by no means the end of the work being done by the Historic Resources Committee and City council to preserve Lacombe’s heritage.

“This is really not the end of the road,” said Bouwsema. He went on to say that he is looking forward to many more such designations happening in the future and encouraged owners of historic buildings to come forward and make applications for designation.

“I’d like to see one, two, three of these a year if possible,” said Bouwsema.

He could not say what Lacombe’s next Municipal Historic Resource designation might be, but did say that there are hundreds of historic houses within Lacombe that would make good designations.

In 2009, the City began

St. Andrew’s United Church was one such resource identified by the survey and in December of last year the City announced it had received an application from the church to be designated.

Once designated, St. Andrew’s United Church will be preserved and protected as a Municipal Historic Resource.

This designation also enables St. Andrew’s United Church to receive funds from certain grant programs and other such initiatives, though there is no guarantee the site would receive such funding.

Any funds that are received through grant funding could be used to repair, restore and preserve the

building, parts of which are more than 100 years old.

Named after the apostle Andrew, the church was built as a Presbyterian church but later became the home of one of Canada’s first United churches when the Presbyterian and Methodist congregations of Lacombe amalgamated.

When original construction was completed, the building was half the size of the existing sanctuary, which has been added onto again and again over the years.

St. Andrew’s is home to Lacombe’s only church bell. It was also included in the structure’s original construction and at the time cost the church only $120.

Since then, St. Andrew’s United Church has been a landmark in the community and a community gathering place as well.

In addition to offering regular church services to its congregation, St. Andrew’s United Church serves as a gathering place for meetings, lectures, even concerts and plays.

There was little debate

regarding the recommendation from administration that council give first and second reading to the bylaw as well as issue a notice of intent. All of council seemed in agreement this was a positive move for Lacombe.

Councillor Wayne Armishaw said he was “just

itching” to move administration’s recommendation to issue a notice, and did so promptly.

Celebrations lined up for National Aboriginal Day

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express This year, National Aboriginal Day will kick off six days of celebration and recognition in Central Alberta.

“These events are important because they are an acknowledgement of our heritage as the first peoples of Canada,” said Raye St. Denys, executive director at Shining Mountain and president of the Métis Local.

National Aboriginal Day is a day to recognize the significance of culture and achievement for First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples.

The event to commemorate National Aboriginal Day, June 21st, will take place at the Iron Ridge Junior Campus in Blackfalds. A tipi will be raised at dawn to signify the beginning of the celebration.

At 1 p.m. there will be prayers, an honour song and a proclamation reading. The proclamation serves as recognition of heritage and emphasizes the significance of National Aboriginal Day as a celebration of culture.

This is the first time the National Aboriginal Day event will take place in Blackfalds. Due to last year’s severe flooding, celebrations were withheld as any

suitable venue still had “Inches of water everywhere,” said St. Denys. Without last year’s celebrations, spirits are high for the upcoming events.

“I’m looking forward to having this in Blackfalds. I have my family here to enjoy the day with,” said St. Denys. She said this year is important because the Aboriginal community in the surrounding area has a chance to celebrate close to home.

There will be displays, games, performances, music and cake until 6 p.m.

June 24th marks a significant Métis holiday - Jean Baptiste Day. The events for this day will take place in Rotary Picnic Park in Red Deer from noon until 6 p.m.

Activities to celebrate include First Nations, Inuit and Métis stories, songs and dances.

At 6:30 p.m., the Fourth Annual Turtle Awards will take place at the Golden Circle.

The Turtle Awards are designed to recognize influential and significant members of Aboriginal communities. These awards are meant to bring to light the achievements of community members, recognize those who maintain traditional practices and even feature a lifetime achievement award.

St. Denys describes the Jean-

Baptiste Day event as a smaller celebration than June 21st, and explained that it is more of a celebration of Métis heritage than of other Aboriginal groups. She added that a delicious Aboriginal treat called bannock will be served on both National Aboriginal Day and Jean-Baptiste Day celebrations.

June 25th and 26th will have open houses at various Aborigi-

nal organizations.

Canada’s Multicultural Day falls on June 27th. This day serves as a day for all Canadians to embrace their heritage and to express different values of culture in the nation. This day will be celebrated on the Ross Street Patio in Red Deer from 5 to 8 p.m.

If weather is poor, performances will be moved indoors to The Hub on Ross.

“We’ve always had fun. The drums and fiddles and music speaks to us,” said St. Denys of the Aboriginal Day celebrations and the subsequent week’s activities.

OPINION Some things are created equal Have you ever heard the saying, “If X was easy, they would call it Y and everyone would do it?”

As in, “If ballet was easy, they would call it football and everyone would do it.”

If you giggled while reading that, that’s ok because it’s kind of funny.

If you got offended, that’s ok too, because it’s kind of unfair as well.

This phrase is one that is quite common on the Internet, often combined with images of art forms or sports to make memes.

These memes are supposed to be a lighthearted way to poke fun at other disciplines and/or make the point that one discipline is just as legitimate as a competing pastime. Trouble is, it makes that point by putting another pastime down, encouraging a form of snobbery that is far too common in many aspects of our lifestyles.

One hobby, like a sport or

art form, doesn’t need to be ‘better’ than another to be legitimate.

People need to stop trying to rank these things as one above the other and come to the realization that all of them are legitimate.

Also, there is no such thing as an ‘easy’ sport or art. Simple perhaps, but not easy.

Practitioners of any one of the millions of sports and art forms out there train and/or study for hours, days, weeks, months and years to advance in their chosen style. That kind of dedication takes discipline and deserves recognition no matter what that style happens to be.

A few weeks ago, the Lacombe Express ran a column dealing with sports and the skill it takes to excel in them.

It takes skill to excel in any sport, any art form and any related pursuit.

Such skill takes time

to develop, practicing for hours each day for years on end as mentioned above.

That kind of effort should be encouraged, celebrated and rewarded. Artists and athletes should be proud of their accomplishments. But they should be proud of the accomplishments of others as well.

Yes, football players are big, strong, tough athletes who work hard to make it

on the gridiron. But, ballerinas are tough, strong athletes too in their own right, who make just as much effort in perfecting their craft.

Tough guy Jean-Claude Van Damme has some insightful things to say on the merits of training in multiple sports and art forms.

As a teenager Van Damme studied ballet for five years to augment his

martial arts training.

He said that ballet was an art, but a ballet workout was also one of the toughest, most difficult forms of exercise out there.

So, instead of telling your friends about why hockey is so much better than ringette, tell them how talented athletes in both sports are. You may find they do the same for you in return.

One of my more closely-held beliefs is that as friendships between people grow, so do safe and caring neighbourhoods. Neighbours tend look out for each other, especially when they know each other. Active participation of neighbourhood residents is a crucial element in community safety.

It is becoming less common to see neighbours chatting on the front lawns while keeping a watchful eye on children and community activities.

Quiet, detached, aloof communities are communities ready for crimes such as theft and vandalism. I believe that we need to get to know our neighbours and learn where they live, which dog or child is theirs and establish friendships to increase that sense of belonging to a community.

Since June is Block Party Month, I encourage residents to organize and host block parties in their neighbourhoods this summer.

Block parties are a great way to get to know your neighbours and build community spirit. Getting together with your neighbours for a warm evening of fun and food is not only enjoyable; it also engenders a renewed attachment amongst the

I believe that the benefits of organizing a neighbourhood block party are manifold. It brings people together to have fun and meet their neighbours, learn a little about each other and the history of the community, share skills, learn about area resources and plan community projects. It can increase our sense of belonging to a community, and helps us encourage one another to look after the neighbourhood in order to improve safety and prevent crime.

The City of Lacombe’s Community Services has a Block Party Planning Kit to help residents host block parties. Also this year we have an activity kit that your neighbourhood can borrow for your block party. The kit contains games that you can play, including golf toss or bocce ball. The City of Lacombe is also a proud supporter of some other sum-

mer celebrations that revitalize our community and bring us together to celebrate. I personally am excited to see the list of activities grow each year, as it indicates that Lacombe is becoming a vibrant cultural hub in the Central Alberta region.

We are celebrating the re-opening of the renovated and upgraded Lacombe Spray Park at the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre on June 13th from 1 to 3 pm; everyone is invited to join us for free cake, music, and lots of water-soaked fun!

As a proud Canadian, I always look forward to the annual Canada Day festivities, especially the fireworks display. With the success last year of the inaugural flag-raising ceremony, we are planning to turn it into a perennial event with the assistance and participation of the Lacombe Legion. Our flagship summer event, Lacombe Days, with its signature parade, goes from July 17-20th, and this year promises to be a great success! Currently, the festival organizers are looking for sponsors and volunteers to help plan

Speaking of parades, we will once again be visiting our neighbouring municipalities to take part in their parades, promoting the City of Lacombe brand with our multiple award-winning parade float. This summer we will visit Clive Funfest, Rimbey Rodeo, Steel Wheel Stampede, and Westerner Days in Red Deer. If you happen to be at any of these events, keep an eye out for us.

Lacombe is fast-becoming a cultural hub, an incubator of the arts in Central Alberta, and a celebration destination. We are gaining this enviable reputation because of a commitment by our citizens to roll up their sleeves, help organize, volunteer for and support our cultural events and festivals.

We also are a caring community where people look out for each another, as evidenced by the church groups and service clubs in the City, and this helps to make us a community of choice, a beautiful city in every sense of the word.

Lacombe Birthplace Forest celebration set for June 24th

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express On June 24th, Lacombe Birthplace Forest will be holding its annual ceremonial planting and celebration at 5 p.m. This year, seven trees will be planted commemorating new births within the community.

Lacombe’s Birthplace Forest program is an opportunity for families in the community to celebrate the birth of a child and commemorate that birth within the City.

The program was implemented in 2007 and each year since, a celebration and ceremonial planting have been held to recognize the trees planted commemorating new births in the community.

Each year, the City invites residents to apply to sponsor a tree in the forest.

The only requirement is that the applicant be the parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt or friend of a child born that year.

To sponsor a tree costs $75 and pays for the tree as well as adding the child’s name to the commemorative plaque at the site.

Mayor Steve Christie commented on how the program allows for those born in Lacombe to leave a lasting impression on the community.

“It gives a connection to community, it builds on community,” said Christie.

“Not all of (these children) are going to

stay (in Lacombe), but a part of them will always be here.”

Mary Lou Fiveland, administrative assistant for the City, agreed.

She said that the forest allows for those whose names are on the plaque to feel a connection to Lacombe wherever their lives take them.

“They can say, ‘Hey, I have a tree planted in my honour here’,” said Fiveland.

She added that the forest also adds beauty to the City.

Christie agreed.

He said the Birthplace Forest provides a way for Lacombe to replace greenery. He added this is important because Lacombe strives to be one of the most beautiful cities in the country and takes pride in its green spaces.

Having supported the program at a personal level, sponsoring four trees for his grandchildren, Christie said he thinks highly of the program.

He added he knows of other families that show strong support to the program by sponsoring a tree whenever a new child is born within the family.

The children within those families embrace the program as well, said Christie.

He added that, while trees are not designated to any of the named individuals within the Birthplace Forest specifically, his own

grandchildren and others often pick a tree to be ‘their tree’ and interact with it when visiting the area.

“They get to see their tree, talk to their tree, touch their tree,” said Christie. He added this makes children aware of the importance of trees, greenery and green spaces.

Christie said the idea for the Birthplace Forest and planting trees to celebrate new life in the community was actually born out of discussions regarding quite the opposite – planting trees to commemorate the dead.

When speaking about planting memorial trees in Lacombe, the idea came about for planting trees at the beginning of residents’ lives as well.

Blackfalds to bring ski and snowboard cable park to town

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Blackfalds should have an entirely new recreational service available this winter.

At a regular meeting of council on June 10th, Blackfalds Town council voted unanimously in favour to enter into an agreement with and approve the Riders Rush Cable Park at All Star Park.

Community Services Director Sean Barnes said that he was excited to see someone in the community willing to offer a new recreational service.

“I think this is an economic spinoff for the community,” said Barnes. “I think something like this in the winter months is going to set us on the map again for something that is unique in our community.”

Blackfalds resident Sam Kiat is the driving force behind the Riders Rush Cable Park.

He said he chose Blackfalds for this project because it is a family-oriented community whose mission statement fits well with his own vision.

Kiat added that he felt as though Blackfalds is growing fast, making a need for more recreational facilities than what the community currently has to offer.

Riders Rush will be a cable driven terrain park for skiers and snowboarders.

It will be the first of its kind in Alberta and only the 10th in Canada (currently there is one park in British Columbia, one in Nova Scotia, one in Manitoba and six in Ontario).

Kiat said the park would provide an alternative to mountain skiing and snowboarding that would keep people in the community for their recreational activities.

The park will consist of a terrain course built along an oblong track. Riders will be pulled along the track through a cable and pulley system. That system would consist of two winch towers at either end of the park connected by cables.

Two riders will be able to use the track at one time and the cable speed can be adjusted to the skill level of the riders.

Kiat mentioned that even with two users at once, the facility is quite safe as riders cannot collide with one another or otherwise get in

one another’s way as can be possible on a ski hill.

Each of the towers will be anchored to large, concrete weights.

All of the equipment for the park is also portable, so after the season is done and the snow is gone, the equipment is gone too, said Kiat.

It would take between two and three days to set up all the equipment for the park.

Because the Riders Rush would only operate during the winter, and All Star Park is currently only utilized in the spring, summer and fall months, Kiat thought it would be a perfect location for the facility.

However, some logistics still need to be figured out.

Kiat said washroom facilities need to be obtained as the ones in the All Star Park kiosk are not winterized and a water supply may be required for making snow when temperatures are below freezing but there is no natural snow for the park.

Kiat said that Riders Rush would offer programming and discounted rates for youth groups. He also said that schools in the area could also utilize the park, perhaps as part of a physical education program, if they so desired.

However, any users of the park would have to provide their own equipment as no rental equipment would be available at the park.

Councillor Will Taylor was very supportive of the idea of the park, but expressed concern that the need for expansion due to increased use of the facility would grow behind the capacities of All Star Park quite quickly.

What you should ask before you say, “I Do” We’ve often heard a minister ask, “Mary MacTavish, do you take John MacDuff to be your lawful husband, to love and cherish, till death do you part?”

Or, “What is your risk of obesity?”

She might demand, “Before we go roaming in the gloaming, send me a copy of your sperm count and what you wear underneath your kilt.”

A report from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, should make every prospective bride, who wants to be a mother, take a second look at her husband-to-be before she says, “I do.”

Scottish researchers now repeat what we already know, that obesity often leads to heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and a variety of other ailments.

But, in the highlands and lowlands of Scotland, extra pounds also lead to a low sperm count, now associated with low fertility.

Dr. Ghlyath Shayeb and her colleagues analyzed

the sperm of over 5,000 Scots and divided them into several groups according to their body mass. Men with the best body mass had the highest level of normal sperm compared to those who were overweight or outright obese.

The study showed that males who were heavier had a 60% chance of producing less volume of semen and a 40% chance of sperm abnormalities.

But how did the skinny Scots fare?

Dr. Shayeb adds that underweight Scottish males with a low body mass were also likely to suffer from the same troubles as overweight males. Not too much and not too little fat is the best formula for more tiger in a man’s sperm tank.

Dr. Shayeb’s remarks carried a more ominous warning. She claimed it was hard to find enough thin males in Scotland for the study! And since obese females are also less fertile, there may be fewer and fewer little Scots strolling the highlands wearing kilts in the future.

Extra pounds are one way to slow growth of the world’s population. But obviously one of the worst ways to do it.

Professor Neil McClure of Queen’s University, Belfast, says, “Male fitness and health are clearly linked to man’s fertility.”

In other words, the fitter the man the fitter the sperm.

But why does weight affect the production of ad-

And sex hormones are needed for the production of good Highland sperm.

The epidemic of diabetes is also causing havoc with Scottish sperm. Researchers at Belfast University report that males who were not overweight, but suffering from diabetes, had twice the rate of DNA damage in sperm as males without this disease. Excess sugar in the blood apparently causes more than obesity, heart attack and sore backs.

Overweight males also have more estrogen. Their fat converts the male hormone androgen into the female hormone estrogen.

sperm. Dr. Jorge Chavarro, of the Harvard Medical School, adds another bad combination. His study shows that overweight males who eat soy-based foods have lower sperm counts. The difference was quite striking.

Normal sperm counts are between 80 to 120 million sperm per milliliter.

Males eating soy had sperm counts of only 41 sperm per milliliter.

I’ve never had the nerve to get down on my hands and knees and take a peek at what Scots wear beneath their kilts. But what men wear does have an effect on the temperature of the male testicles.

We know that the best sperm are produced at a temperature slightly below normal body temperature.

So an abundance of fat around the testicles could result in increased temper-

ature and the risk of poor sperm.

Tight fitting jockey underwear also increases the temperature. Loose fitting boxer shorts, or no shorts, are preferable. So, if any reader has the nerve to take a peek under the kilt, please let me know, and I’ll publish what we’ve all been longing to know.

Precautions to reduce risk of Hantavirus Following confirmation of a case of Hantavirus in the Central Zone, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is reminding Albertans to take steps to protect themselves.

Hantavirus – a potentially fatal illness that primarily affects the lungs/respiratory system – is caused when humans inhale particles of urine or feces from an infected rodent, which become airborne when disturbed. Anyone who disturbs areas of mice or mice droppings can be at risk.

To protect yourself and reduce your risk of illness, follow these precautions whenever cleaning areas of mice or mice droppings.

Open doors and windows for ventilation, and keep out of the area for at least 30 minutes prior to commencing cleanup. Wearing rubber gloves, soak droppings, nests and dead mice with a bleach/water solution (one part bleach to nine parts water) or a household disinfectant. Let the solution sit for five minutes.

Never disturb any droppings, nests or dead mice, prior to soaking with this bleach solution. Mop up bleach-soaked droppings, nest and/or dead mice, or

pick up with paper towels and place them in a plastic bag. Seal the bag and put in a garbage container with a tight-fitting lid.

Wash your gloves before removing, and then wash your hands.

Never vacuum or sweep droppings, nests or dead mice. This can create dust that can be inhaled.

If dealing with significant mouse infestations or with mouse infestations in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation, contact Health Link Alberta (1-866-4085465) to discuss necessary precautions.

Although rare, Hantavirus can be fatal. Infected individuals typically show symptoms one to two weeks following exposure; however, symptoms can appear up to five weeks after exposure.

Symptoms resemble severe flu, including fever, body aches, chills, abdominal problems and severe breathing problems. Any Albertan who has recently been in an area contaminated by mice and subsequently develops severe flu-like symptoms or difficulty breathing should see a doctor immediately.

Bucs start season off right with win over Wolfpack

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Central Alberta Buccaneers have made a great start to the season.

On June 7th, the Bucs hosted the Calgary Wolfpack in the AFL season opener which also happened to be the Bucs’ home opener.

After defeating the Wolfpack 36–17, the Buccaneers have made the first step to fulfilling their goal of a perfect season.

Buccaneers coach Duane Brown said he was very impressed with how the Bucs played.

“It was a happy day from start to finish,” said Brown. “The team did exactly what we wanted today.”

Brown also commented on how vital it was to start strong in order to build off the incredible season they had last year, as well as still remain competitive having lost some key players in the off-season.

“It was very important for us today to come out against a proven established team and dominate them,” said Brown.

“That second half was complete domina-

tion.” In the first quarter of the game, neither side managed to gain any kind of an advantage. Both traded the ball a few times making and losing yards, but at the end of 15 the game remained scoreless.

In the second quarter, the Buccaneers claimed first blood with a touchdown from Taylor Waldbauer and a successful conversion kick from Tylor Johnson.

Later in the quarter, the Wolfpack would do the same to pull even with the Buccaneers and then score a field goal to pull ahead.

It was clear, especially in the first half of the game, that it was the first game of the season. Both teams made a few sloppy mistakes, which their opponents were quick to capitalize on.

While they were in the game from the beginning, the Buccaneers made a much better showing in the second half, particularly in the final quarter.

By reading the Wolfpack defense, the Bucs were able to find the holes and make some long runs to put them in good scoring positions, translating into more touchdowns.

Rookie Edwin Rivera was one player who gained the Bucs quite a few running yards, showcasing some impressive moves on the field and making it through a few Wolfpack defenders.

Brown said that he and the coaching staff have been expecting a strong performance from Rivera since the very beginning.

“Rivera is the real deal,” said Brown.

“We’ve known since day one when we saw him on the practice field that that kid is the real deal and he is phenomenal and exciting to watch. I just can’t wait until our offensive package is big enough that it really exploits what he can do.”

The Buccaneers made better reads on the defensive side as well, leading to quite a handful of interceptions and several blocked passes.

As with offence, the Bucs’ defense was able to take full advantage of the mistakes made by their opponents.

Johnson was one player who made several tips to prevent Wolfpack passes from being completed and was an impressive force on the field as a defensive back as

well as a kicker.

After taking a bad penalty for mouthing off to one of the officials, Johnson returned to the field and turned his frustrations into a stellar performance.

Brown said Johnson’s objectionable conduct is not typical for him and a bit of a cool-down on the sidelines was all he needed.

“We let him calm down and then he did exactly what you are supposed to do – take your frustration out on the other team,” said Brown.

While content with his team’s performance, Brown said there is still work to be done.

He said he would like to see the special teams line running a little tighter before this weekend’s game against the Grande Prairie Drillers.

Brown added that the number of penalties the Bucs took needed to decrease as well.

Next action for the Bucs is 6 p.m. Saturday at ME Global Field. This time the Bucs will host the Grande Prairie Drillers. news@lacombeexpress.com

Locos take the Thunder in last season game

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacoka has made a strong finish to the season.

On June 8th, the Lacoka Midget Locos hosted the Stettler Thunder and defeated them 10 – 1.

The win gave the Locos a record of 9 – 3 in the regular season and put them in third place in the league. Coach Mike Wood said that a core group of players who love the sport have been key to Lacoka’s success this season.

“We have a good team, a pretty strong team,” said Wood. “We have a lot of positives on our team.

They love lacrosse and they play it whenever they can, so that helps.”

Patience was the name of the game last Sunday. Lacoka dictated the style and pace of play, never panicking or rushing plays and scoring opportunities.

Wood said that staying patient has served the Locos well this season.

“You know, you try to keep possession of the ball as much as possible,” said Wood. “So you try to be patience and kill the shot clock until you are ready to let it go.”

While the Locos were patient, the Thunder was frantic. As the score gap widened, Stettler’s goaltender became more frustrated and the rest of the team became more disorganized and hectic in their attempts to score.

Lacoka opened up scoring within the first minute took control of the game. What followed was the cool and collected Locos slowly but surely taking charge and establishing a significant lead.

attacking zone. Whenever they lost control of the ball, they simply worked at regaining control and attacking once again, with little change to their pace.

By the end of the second period, Stettler finally had their heads in the game and began to tax Lacoka a bit more on both offense and defense. However, the Locos just took it in stride and maintained control of the game all the way through.

A strong all around team, Locoka was able to fight off the increased offensive from Stettler towards the end of the game while still maintaining pressure in their own offensive end. As such, the Thunder was not able to close the score gap, only managing to score one goal before the final buzzer sounded.

“We knew that was going to happen, that (Stettler) was going to fight back,” said Wood.

“We know their players well so we know they aren’t going to roll over and die. We knew they were going to push back.”

Seconds before the end of the game, and injury to a Thunder player stopped play. The player suffered a dislocated kneecap and was transported via ambulance to hospital for treatment.

With the regular season over, the Locos will now begin playoffs this weekend. Wood said the team

expects to play their first series against the Stettler Thunder, but a proper schedule has not been finalized at this time.

Wood said that the most important thing to remember is, while the Locos need to prepare for games against the stronger teams in the league, they can’t look past their current opponents and need to take the playoffs one game at a time. news@lacombeexpress.com

ARTS & LEISURE Thirteen-year-old makes his directing debut Lacombe’s Nolan Wilkie showcases The Wise People of Gotham

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express A 13-year-old boy has put great efforts and time into directing his very own play that was presented this past Tuesday at the Wolf Creek Community Church.

Nolan Wilkie of Lacombe put his creative mind to work as he commanded a troupe of young actors, ages four to 12, to produce and direct a play titled The Wise People of Gotham.

“I actually had somebody ask me if I might consider it, and I was shaky at first but thought it would be fun to put it on,” he said.

The Wise People of Gotham was adapted from a biblical tale of a town called Gotham. The people of the town act foolish so that a greedy king does not come into their town, create a major road and steal their goods.

“I was looking up ways in books to help me figure out how to do this, and (the play) was in one of the books,” said Wilkie.

His mother, Megan Wilkie, adds that Nolan was very creative and wrote the entire first scene by himself.

Nolan used the biblical tale to guide his play, and was creative when writing its adaptation. The king, named King Greedy, seeks things such as pizzas from the ‘simple’ people of Gotham. Nolan brought humour and fun to the production, and took the time to make sure his actors were comfortable.

“I was pretty nervous before the show, and quite excited,” he said. He laughed

Nolan said his favourite aspect of the directing process was seeing the production come together as a whole, finished product.

Despite a few hiccups in the organizing process, the production ran smoothly and Nolan’s hard work

paid off.

“A couple times we had to change the date of the play, and we really had trouble with that because we had to go through the church, then ask everybody if it would work for them.”

Nolan said he is thinking about taking some improv classes, or possibly beginning to work on directing

“I just was really proud of him. I didn’t ever doubt he could do it. He’s always been very enthusiastic and it’s a real niche for him.

He’s been in plays and taken a lot of classes through Cornerstone Youth Theatre in Red Deer,” said Megan.

“I was just really excited for him. I was really en-

couraged with all the parents and children that were excited to be doing it, and excited Nolan was doing this.”

Nolan managed a group of 16 kids, cast and crew, to put together this production. He organized meetings and practices twice a week, casted, adapted the script and directed the

Local family takes part in independent film project

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express One local family has recently been immortalized on film.

Between March and May of this year, the Cave family of Lacombe was part of an independent Christian Film Project from Movie Makers in Airdrie.

Movie Makers is an independent, family-run film studio specializing in Christian and educational films. Lyndall Cave said her family met the Lammimans, the family running Movie Makers, through another family who are mutual friends as well as through her own work as a wardrobe assistant with the Canadian Badlands Passion Play.

It was through their mutual friends, who had been involved in the Lammiman family’s first project, that the Caves became aware of Movie Makers. Lyndall said she and her mother both

auditioned for the studio’s next production, My Grandpa Detective, but did not receive any major roles.

However, the whole family was invited to be extras on the film.

Lyndall was also involved in designing and constructing the costumes for the project.

“It was good fun,” said Lyndall.

She added that she enjoyed working with the Lammimans, saying they are patient directors.

A stage actor who has experience working with the local ZAP! Theatre productions, Lyndall said it was, “Really neat” to be part of a film project. She mentioned how she found the differences between screen acting and stage acting interesting.

“It was really cool to see how (a movie) gets put together, because it’s not shot all continuously,” she said. She added because of the different cuts, camera angles and other features in film acting,

it differs quite a bit from stage acting.

Lyndall said acting in movies can be much more subtle than on stage, because the camera makes it easy to capture and portray emotions to the audience. In a play, the actors have to convey feelings and emotions more obviously so that they read over a large crowd.

Even though she was an extra, Lyndall said she still felt nervous about her acting.

“I was kind of nervous because I don’t know much about screen acting.” However, she added that watching the other, more experienced actors taught her a lot.

For the costume design side of things, Lyndall was involved in the initial discussions on how the costumes for characters would look. She assisted by coming up with ideas for different looks and finding suppliers to get necessary materials. Once the designs were

finalized, Lyndall also helped put the costumes together.

Greg Lammiman, co-founder of Movie Makers, said that the company was founded by him and his son Dallas through a mutual interest in film. He said the company was founded in 2006 and started by making educational films.

Once the pair ‘got their feet wet’ with educational films, Movie Makers started to make moves more towards their already established goal of creating feature length Christian films.

My Grandpa Detective is one such project. It is family-friendly comedy film about a grandfather, grandson pair who are forced to work together as detectives when the grandfather discovers a clerical error has left him ineligible for his pension.

Greg said that production is full of a lot of laughs while delivering a Christian message. That

message being that in order to forgive others, one must seek forgiveness for oneself.

“The main character blames his grandfather for a lot,” said Greg.

“But he has to come to the realization that he has his own needs of forgiveness before God, before he is able to forgive others.”

Lyndall said that, even though My Grandpa Detective isn’t a major Hollywood production that everyone in the world is going to see, it is still very exciting to be able to see her work on screen. It has also sparked an interest in her to work on future film projects.

Already, Lyndall is in discussions to work on costumes for Movie Makers’ next project, a sci-fi story called Mayflower II, which should begin filming in August. Lyndall added she has auditioned for the film again as well.

The Little Death, also directed by Scott, features Dan Vasquez, Pam Miller, Ashley Mercia and Alanna

Lindl, and was written by Peter M. Floyd. The story focuses on a young man who is confronting death – and love – on the same night, said Edwards.

Finally, wrapping up the slate of plays is The Zoo Story written by Edward Albee. It’s being directed

by Elena Stalwick and stars Logan Shave and Isaiah Williams.

Edwards, a talented actor in her own right, is enjoying the role of co-producer this time around.

A look at all the extras that you need If you are blessed to be able to build a new home or completely renovate an existing one, you are in a small percentage of people who are lucky enough to be able to take on this kind of project. It is a good idea to make a checklist of previous homes you have occupied to see if there are any small improvements you can make in the new space. Here are a few tips I have seen over the years that I feel are a great idea for any home.

Deeper storage – add those extra inches in depth to cabinets and storage closets where you can steal them. Even a few inches in a storage closet will give you a leg up on future storage. For example, I find if you want to buy giant sized towels most linen

MECKLER closets are not deep enough. Standard issue depth doesn’t give you any extra wiggle room so try to add some depth even if you only pop out the centre of your bathroom vanity to give those few extra inches.

Mitred toe kicks - think about this, if you angle the bottom of your toe kick on your cabinets you will never have to dig into a corner with a broom or vacuum again. The angled inside corner keeps dirt from hiding far out of

reach and brings everything into the lights.

Double duty items - cabinet or faux fridge panels which double as a chalkboard. What about a backsplash that doubles as a cork or message board for your on the go family?

Consider plumbing a pot filler tap above your stove on the splash – this is one of my favourite features! Increase your use of magnetic rails on cabinet door backs, walls and gable ends of cabinets to allow you to clips and store items in metallic jars.

Drawers not cupboards wherever possible - this is a must have, especially in bathrooms. A deep drawer will hold as much as an under counter cabinet and

it makes finding everything so much easier than bending under a 31” cabinet to try to find that extra tube of toothpaste you are positive that you bought.

Combining items is a good way to maximize your useable space.

A kitchen island with a small extension/kitchen table attached gives you multiple uses underneath and an extra large work/ prep space on top. Storage under steps using slide out drawers and utilizing space under stairs for a cozy office will give you the extra mileage you may be requiring from your house.

Registration for Town School Bus 2014-15 School Year Town School Busing will be available in Lacombe, Ponoka and Blackfalds for the 2014-15 school year. Town students must re-register each year. Registrations must be done online at website at: www.wolfcreek.ab.ca, click on the Busing link.

Payment for busing (under 2.4 kilometers from school) must be arranged prior to students being able to ride a bus.

Seats are available on a ¿rst-registered, ¿rst-served basis.

Late registrations will be put on a waiting list.

Rural students who are new to busing must also register online.

Effective July 1st, the Town of Blackfalds will be implementing changes regarding the weekly residential garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup days.

This new collection schedule, which is detailed below, can be viewed online at the Town’s web site at www.blackfalds.com.

As of July 1st, east side collection north of Panorama Dr. will be on Tuesday and the west side collection north of Westbrook Rd. will be on Wednesday; west side pickup north of the railway tracks, but south of Westbrook Rd. as well as the

area south of the railway tracks will be on Thursday and downtown Blackfalds and the east side area that is south of Panorama Dr. will be on Friday.

This past April, the Town of Blackfalds passed its new solid waste management bylaw. Under the new bylaw, waste will eventually be collected through automatic collection bins instead of being manually collected as it has been previously. Council heard other municipalities are adopting this method of collection.

Heavy Duty Mechanic – On Highway Vehicles

Bashaw, AB. Operations Equipment Manager Full-time. Some Weekends. On call.

Monday – Friday. As required

SCOPE OF JOB Working in A&B’s Bashaw shop, this position is responsible for the mechanical maintenance, repairs, servicing, inspections, and rigging up of A&B’s on-highway trailer and truck fleet. The majority of this position’s duties will be involved with trailer repairs.

RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform preventative maintenance, oil changes, tire changes, mechanical and general maintenance to A&B’s fleet of National Safety Code (NSC) qualified trucks and trailers.

• Troubleshoot, diagnose and complete repairs for A&B’s trailer and vehicle fleet.

• Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs on vehicles and equipment in field locations as needed.

• Assist with ordering of parts, and maintaining inventory.

• Rigging trucks with the following: Tool boxes, box liners, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, radios, hands free communications systems, etc.

• Pick up and deliver vehicles.

• Oversee and ensure registration and documentation of all light duty fleet vehicles is completed.

• Parts pick-up and hot shot deliveries.

• Tracking and submitting of equipment hours and mileage.
