Local hoops star beats odds

O
n a breezy Sunday afternoon, Coby Felsman Jr. shoots some hoops using an old net outside his house on a quiet culde-sac near Beaver Creek. Standing five feet six inches tall, Felsman, 16, darts to the net, changes direction like a water spider then sinks his shot—all with an old basketball. When finished, he walks back to his house while still bouncing the ball on the dirt driveway, goes inside and gets ready to help his grandmother Peggy Tatoosh with some chores. Felsman walks with a little more pep in his stride these days and he has a lot to smile about. He is one of five Vancouver Island players selected to play on the U-16 boys Team BC basketball roster that will compete in the North American Indigenous Games in Regina, Sask. this July. The North American Indigenous Games is a multi-sport event involving Aboriginal athletes from across North America. Athletes compete in sports such as basketball, softball
and soccer, as well as canoeing, volleyball and lacrosse. Athletes try out for regional teams for each sport in each province. Port Alberni will also be represented by Tseshaht’s Memphis Dick, who is on Team BC’s U-14 Girls team. Jesse Vissia, who hails from the Hupacasath First Nation but is now living in Keremeos, will compete on the boys’ U-19 team. The accomplishment is no small feat for Felsman, who is one of the youngest if not the shortest member of his team. What makes the achievement more special are the obstacles Felsman has had to overcome to not only succeed in making the team, but also to succeed in life. Felsman was born in Port Alberni on Jan. 1, 1998. His father Coby Sr. was born in Idaho and maintains dual citizenship. His mother was born in Utah. Life was difficult for Coby Jr. from the time he took his first steps. His parents split and he was raised by his paternal grandmother, Peggy Tatoosh. “We’re the only family and this is the only home he’s ever known,” Tatoosh said. Felsman’s earliest basketball memory is learning to play the game in Grade 5. But

he was schooled in the finer points of the game every day at an old hoop outside his home by his uncle Earl Tatoosh III, a former standout with the ADSS Armada. Earl Tatoosh is 10 years older, five inches taller and more than 100 pounds heavier than Felsman, but he possesses quick reflexes and a deft shot despite his size. Tatoosh played hard but fair against Felsman when he was

learning how to play the game, and taught him to always stay in the fight. “He never let me win—ever. I always
wanted to win, and playing against him made me more competitive,” said Felsman. “When I started to

During the high school basketball season Felsman felt the urge to up his game and find out what exactly he could do at the next level. With that, in December he tried out for the boys U-16 team that will compete in the 2014 North American Indigenous Games in Regina. There were 24 players who competed in the two-part tryout in November and December. The calibre of players was consistently good, Felsman said. “Everyone was good and the level of play was higher. It was pretty intense.” When the final cuts were made Felsman was named as one of three alternate players on the 15-man roster. But in May, Team BC officials notified Felsman that he was no longer an alternate; he is now one of 13 starters. “I was at the skate park with my friends and my grandma came and told me. I was pretty ecstatic,” he said. He looks forward to the competition, saying competing at a higher level is part of his bigger picture. “I want to play in college or university one day, either here or in the US,” he said. “It’s a big step but I’m used to that.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

His Grade 9 coach was Harold Lefty Williams then Dave De Jong in Grade 10. The pair rounded out Felsman’s offensive and defensive game. “They ran us hard with conditioning drills,” he said. Felsman was a standout on the Grade 10 team, so much so that he got called up to play with the senior team during Totem in January 2014. Felsman stands out for another reason: academics. He maintains good grades and lists his favourite subject as math. He’s also in jazz and concert band, and he has made the high school honour roll. “If he wants to play ball then he has to do well in school, that’s the rule and we hold him to it,” his grandmother said. Watching Felsman at Totem were his grandparents and uncle, who have been rocks of support for him while growing up. His father just finished a lengthy prison sentence in Utah but because of parole conditions can’t come across the border to see his son. The two have stayed in touch though with Coby Jr. often describing his games to his father over the phone in prison.

Teachers vote for full strike WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
BC teachers have voted in favour of a full-scale strike and the school year could come to an end as early as Monday. In Tuesday’s vote, 33,387 teachers cast ballots: 28,908 or 86 per cent voted to escalate action if needed. Local voting results won’t be released and instead will constitute part of the provincial vote average, Alberni District Teachers’ Union President Ken Zydyk said. “Teachers are required to give 72-hours strike notice and the earliest we could walk out is on
Monday,” he said. Teachers’ resources and momentum are beginning to erode as the strike wears on. Their strike pay is drying up, and the B.C. Public School Employers Association filed a request with the LRB last week to have final exams and report cards for high school students declared essential. If successful, the move ensures that Grade 10 to 12 students can finish the school year and get their final grades. “Are our teeth being pulled — absolutely not,” Zydyk said. “Teachers don’t go on strike to get strike pay; they go on strike to try and better
learning conditions for children.” But in SD 70, the strike is starting to drain teachers’ personal resources. One teacher who asked not to be identified said that the strike was hitting them in their pocketbook. “My last paycheque was $400 less than it usually is, and my next one will be almost $900 less for missing two strike days and that counts being penalized 10 per cent per day,” the teacher said. If the strike goes on longer “that means that I will not be able to pay my rent.” The government has saved $12 million each week in salaries during the teachers’
current but limited job action, plus nearly $5 million more by chopping wages. Class size and composition remain sticking points between the two sides, Zydyk said. Final exams and the grad ceremony are on the horizon and it’s not known if and how they’ll be affected, School District 70 Superintendent Cam Pinkerton said. “We’re waiting for a ruling from the Labour Relation Board about whether final exams will be designated an essential service,” Pinkerton said. “The grad ceremony will carry on.” School district officials have already had discussions with post secondary
institutions about how a strike may impact incoming students. “They’ll take the strike into account in B.C. with things like late transcripts and scholarship applications,” Pinkerton said. The four-week summer session in July and August at VAST may also be impacted depending on the LRB ruling, Pinkerton said. The session is for students who want to improve their final grades. A new addition was slated for the summer session that would see ESL students take ESL classes in the morning and participate in a Parks and Recreation activity in the afternoon. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Port Alberni City Council is signing a 25-year lease with the Port Alberni Port Authority for Lots A and B of the former plywood site despite public opposition and a perceived lack of public consultation. Council voted 4-2 in favour of the proposal at their June 9 meeting. Mayor John Douglas and councillor Wendy Kerr voted against the move. Coun. Dan Washington declared a conflict of interest because of his employment with Alberni Engineering and left the room. He did not participate in the discussion and he didn’t vote. “I really like Alberni Engineering and their goals,” Douglas said. “But my concern is with the lack of public consultation.” The port authority intends to lease the Plywood lots to Alberni Engineering, which plans to build a 12,000-squarefoot metal structure that will service ships directly from the inlet’s waters. The company will eventually construct a 30,000-square-foot building. Terms of the lease include $1,200 per month in rent plus municipal taxes; the company will invest $500,000 in utility infrastructure at the site, which will be located more than 50 metres from Lot C— the public beach. Nearly a dozen people spoke about the matter during the public input period, most of them against council signing the lease. Three were critical of the lack of public consultation. “There is a real need for the public to get together,” Neil Anderson said. “We have to involve the
public a lot more in the decision making than I have seen in the seven years that I’ve been here.” Chris Alemany delivered a petition with 300 names supporting beach expansion on the lots. Douglas cited the lack of public consultation as among the reasons he was voting no. “In order to succeed it’s important that we have buy-in from people. We need to have more,” he said. Municipal taxes collected for the land will depend on how much BC Assessment values it, but the city could fetch between $40,000 to $119,000 annually based on a light industry designation, city finance manager Cathy Rothwell said. The land will allow Alberni Engineering to
expand its operations so it can compete for government ship building and refitting contracts, spokesperson Rob English said. Contracts will begin to be awarded in October. Site preparation could begin as early as December with work starting the following year, he said. While PAPA has other land at its disposal, Lots A and B are preferred because of a combination of traffic, vessel access and license provisions, he said. The footprint of the company’s Harbour Road facility is too small to allow for the amount of employees and larger contract work that owners envision, he added. “It’s unsafe to try and squeeze more people in there.”
There are other municipalities on the Island the company could look at to build the facility if council were to back out. Councillors Jack McLeman and Kerr expressed a concern about PAPA subleasing the property for a log sort. “I do not want to see in that one year window...another log sort,” Coun. Jack McLeman said. A log sort is within acceptable use that municipal zoning allows, Ken Watson said. But the city controls the lease in several key ways, he added. The city can opt out of the lease if there is no industrial activity on the site within a year; if there is no investment in municipal infrastructure on the site; and if there is a two-year lull in industrial activity.

Citizens mourn alongside RCMP They lined the street across from the RCMP station, silently watching as firefighters, auxiliary police, fisheries and conservation officers, veterans and cadets joined their fellow officers in red serge, preparing to march around the block in support of their fallen comrades. They stayed respectfully behind the tail vehicle as officers, in two lines abreast, took up an entire lane of Redford Street as they marched around the block in solemn solidarity. This scene, which took place at the Port Alberni RCMP detachment on Morton Street early Tuesday morning, was repeated across the country as law enforcement officers mourned the three Codiac RCMP officers—constables Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, Dave Joseph Ross and Douglas James Larche—who were gunned down in the line of duty last week. Between 5,000 and 7,000 officers, including 1,300 RCMP officers in red serge, attended the regimental funeral for the trio in Moncton, NB. Thousands more citizens paid their respects in events similar to the one held in Port Alberni. If local officers don’t say it often enough, the public’s presence on Tuesday, and their support over the past week and any other day, matters. Seeing those people across the street from Port Alberni’s detachment reminded Insp. Mac Richards that what the RCMP does in this community makes a difference. ‘It’s unfortunate that it takes something like this to show us as police officers that people do value what we do,’ he said. — Alberni Valley News
Gas: the other pipeline showdown TOM FLETCHER B.C. Views

ICTORIA – The prospect of piping diluted heavy oil across northern B.C. and loading it in tankers has generated significant genuine protests, as well as bursts of celebrity nonsense, rent-a-stunts and instant online petitions. Natural gas pipelines and export terminals, on the other hand, are generally accepted by the public. Premier Christy Clark staked her political future on developing liquefied natural gas exports, and pulled off an upset election win that not even Clark expected. Most of the heat she’s taken on that is focused on her extravagant predictions that LNG will pay off the debt and maybe even get rid of our sales tax. But as I predicted 18 months ago, there’s a shift in the target of
professional protesters to natural gas. A reminder of that awaited me on a morning walk to the B.C. legislature during the last week of the May session. At the front gate stood a young woman in a bikini top and shorts, her skin smeared with a dark material, presumably to simulate crude oil. She waved to passing traffic, stretching a banner promoting a website for the “Unist’ot’en camp.” Legislature security intervened to clear the entry walkway before I could ask the protester who was paying her. The fundraising website she was promoting hadn’t been updated since March, but this isn’t the first time this camp has been promoted. Chevron’s Burnaby oil refinery was also targeted May 30 by protesters who locked themselves to a gate with bicycle locks
and chains. They also cited the Unist’ot’en camp and their aim to stop the Pacific Trails pipeline. The camp came to my attention last summer, when it was promoted by one of Victoria’s chronic anarchist protesters, a woman who goes by the name Zoe Blunt. Blunt and other southern protesters documented their trip north to support the camp’s stated goal, to stop the Pacific Trails gas pipeline, planned to supply the ChevronApache liquefied natural gas terminal near Kitimat. The camp is on Crown land near Smithers. It was established at the end of a one-lane bridge by two members of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. While that community’s elected council maintains a respectful relationship with the B.C. government, the splinter group that

backs the camp has confrontation in mind. The Unist’ot’en website is a jumble of demands and claims that alternates between the Pacific Trails gas pipeline and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal. Like the woman at the legislature, if you want it to be against oil, it’s against oil. A clearer picture of this situation is provided by a relentless blogger named Greg Renouf, who specializes in investigating protesters across Canada. His blog, www. genuinewitty.com, should be required reading for reporters who are presented with slick banners and posturing protesters. Renouf follows the money as well as the familiar faces who pop up at protest after protest. In April he reported that the increasingly militant Council of Canadians is supporting the Unist’ot’en camp, along with what he describes as “a host of NGOs, unions, militant anarchists and professional protesters.”

There are several loose cannons about who wish to de-industrialize Port Alberni and who compare us with Nanaimo, which in 1970 occupied 3.7 square miles and now totals 35.25 square miles. The late Nanaimo mayor and MLA Frank Ney led the charge for boundary expansion in a town which now has a university, B.C. ferries, a large regional hospital, and is HQ for many governmental agencies and departments. Here, we have high unemployment, high city taxes, low income, and about 100 vacant stores, to say nothing of a hospital too small to accommodate an increasing number of retirees. What we need are good-paying jobs such as those we can expect from Alberni Engineering’s new developments at Lots A & B beside Canal Beach. Aside from Harbour Quay, all our waterfront should be available for industrialization and we should encourage industry in other
areas as well.

Can low carbon be our future? To the Editor,
President Obama recently enacted new legislation to limit greenhouse gas production from coal burning power plants in the US. Big coal immediately responded that thousands of jobs would be lost and the price of energy would go up. Archbishop Desmond Tutu harshly criticized tar sands oil production during his trip to Fort McMurray two weeks ago. Chief Allan Adam, the host of Tutu’s visit responded that “we’re not against development... we’ll never get rid of the use of fossil fuels. Control the substances that are going into the Athabasca River-that’s what we’re really after.” The journey to a low carbon future is complicated by opposing viewpoints and different agendas. Our challenge is to sort through them all and make wise decisions about our future. In an effort to

Fighting for the right ‘rite’ To the Editor,
Re: Prom a right of passage, June 5 In the June 5 edition of the Alberni Valley News, you published an editorial by AV News staff under the headline “ADSS prom a right of passage.” The editorial includes the observation that prom night is “a time for grads to go through a right of passage unique unto them.” This column does suggest that prom is a “right” of the graduating class -- an entitlement they have earned from completing 12 years of education,
one that should be immune from the current labour conflict between local teachers and the Province. However, the expression “a right of passage” is incorrect English usage. It should read “a rite of passage,” where “rite” has the meaning of “ritual.”

Focus on hurt closer to home To the Editor,
While Canadians recoil in horror when confronted by the recent new of widespread rape and murder in India, they would be well advised to look closer to home. The widespread violence against aboriginal women in B.C. is well documented and hardly a week goes by when more harrowing news is released to the media by various authorities. The issue is a complex one, but unlike the challenges facing women in distant countries, we can easily make a real difference here in B.C. Wally Oppal outlined one simple solution in his report of the Missing Women Commission
of Inquiry: provide safe transportation between the small communities along B.C.’s highway of tears. While private, for profit transportation options exist, the deep poverty endemic to these communities ensures there will always be women hitchhiking despite the danger. They simply have no other option. Given the huge number of women that have gone missing along that highway, it’s absolutely crucial that the government provide safe and free transportation for these women. If non-aboriginal women in the suburbs were experiencing the same fate, Christy Clark’s government would be moving heaven and earth to stop the disappearances. But because they are aboriginal women, far from major populations, they are perceived as expendable. Mr. Oppal suggested an easy solution, the government ignores it, and women continue to disappear. Doesn’t that make the government culpable?

Gary Shockley, in his book ‘The Meandering Spirit’, also uses this image of sailing to describe the Spirit’s leading. “You never think about this happening when you go out there.” Retired RCMP officer Joe Lamoureux reflected on the tragedy in Moncton, NB last week, where three RCMP officers were killed and two more shot and injured in the line of duty. Lamoureux was one of dozens of law enforcement officers who either marched or stood outside the Port Alberni RCMP detachment Tuesday morning to honour their fallen colleagues. Many members of the public and family members of police officers were also in attendance. Officers marched around the block. Reverend Les Schrader, president of the Canadian Police Champlains Association, delivered a prayer. Inspector Mac Richards reminded his officers that they are impacting their community in a positive way. “I know for a fact that what we do does make a difference. It has value,” he said. Margaret Cargill stood across the street with her two young children. Her husband has been an RCMP officer since 2006, and Port Alberni is their second posting. “The incident last week is always the biggest fear as an RCMP spouse,” she said. “You always know it’s possible.” She came out to the event, even though her children are too young to understand why their father was marching in his red serge, to lend her support. “Being there this morning was very important to me to show support for my husband and the other members.” editor@albernivalleynews.com

Ducks Unlimited targets Canada geese for estuary hunt WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
An initiative that will see limited hunting of Canada geese on the Somass Estuary will have to await consultation with First Nations. Ducks Unlimited spokesperson Jeanine Bond told Port Alberni city council that the organization wanted a specific exemption from the firearms discharge bylaw in order to carry out a limited hunt in season. The hunt would be carried out by designated hunters who would abide by regulations to keep the public safe. If the problem persisted then the organization would apply for federal permission to continue hunting outside of hunting season, Bond said. The estuary was purchased in 2001 and is overseen by a management committee that includes city, regional
district and First Nations partners. The city and AlberniClayoquot Regional District have jurisdiction over different parts of the area. The organization hopes to protect the estuary’s agricultural land through the initiative, she said. Canada geese were considered endangered in the 1970s and steps were taken to re-introduce them to the estuary. Since then the population has rebounded and now there are so many geese that it’s a problem. The geese threaten habitat in the area because of mass feeding, and they undermine local agricultural planting initiatives, Bond said. Coun. Hira Chopra asked if the ACRD had a bylaw preventing shooting. Bond replied that they allowed hunting. Mayor John Douglas asked about the safety of outdoor enthusiasts during the hunt. Bond said that the hunters

Smokers require higher levels of the antioxidant vitamin C to counteract the oxidative damaging effects of cigarette smoke on body cells than non-smokers. The higher level can be met by eating an extra piece of fruit daily. Vitamin E is also an antioxidant. Many people don’t include enough foods containing this fatsoluble vitamin. Mustang T5: Only two cars exist in Canada continued from page A13 Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the final part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford.
Both manufacturers offered to sell the rights to Ford for $10,000 each but Ford declined and decided the solution would be to use the initial Mustang project name T5 as the solution. With all of the changes required, they should have probably paid the $10,000. With there being so many U.S. armed forces bases in Germany, export models were highly sought after. Laura had no idea how rare her car was until she decided to embark on this project and began doing her research. The T5 registry has informed Laura that of the 453 Mustang Hardtop T5s built in 1967, hers is one of the few examples ordered with a vinyl roof, which is listed as an option in the V.I.N tag. There are only two T5s known to exist in Canada, hers and one in Ontario and only 45 have survived in various states of condition worldwide. It is going to be a busy summer for Laura, her two daughters and the Mustang. I suspect her father, never in his wildest dreams would have thought the car would end up as a show car let
alone become a family affair involving three generations of his family. The T5 will debut at the Vancouver Classic Car Show and Auction at the PNE on June 21 and 22. A picture of it at it’s gleaming best in next week’s Driveway preview of that show. Then it will head south in July to the Mustang Roundup in Bellevue, Washington, the world’s largest Mustang meet. The car is entered in the Concours restoration class and should place well. Because this is the 50th anniversary of the Mustang the invitations are pouring in, the most recent one from an event in North Carolina, Laura still has a day job so unfortunately will miss that one. She will finish the summer off at the Luxury SuperCar weekend at VanDusen Gardens in September. The car will be viewed at least 30 or 31 times in a month, gracing the walls of garages and repair shops all over North America featured in a 2015 Ford calendar. Recently, my wife and I lost our pet dog of 14 years. A Pomeranian, he came with us to Port Alberni when we purchased the business. He took over as the offspring when ours grew to independence. The death left us grieving, but we now have another little bundle of energy running about the course. In a similar way, I’m told dogs and owners are encouraged to visit senior living facilities as a tender way of communing with the elderly. I don’t quite get the relationship between us humans and animals, other than what is obvious, and perhaps it’s not up to me to understand. Regardless, the interaction with them appears enigmatic or puzzling. Here, at Hollies, I strangely find myself uplifted on a daily basis through animal life more so than the human! A seeming natural therapy,
it results from the presence of animals featured on our golf course each day. In the mornings, I pass deer quietly at peace nibbling away at the long grass stalks. Their manner of living simply makes me forget about problems. There are eagles and hawks that glide above my mowers and the tree tops daily. Large birds that make me stare in wonder. There are numerous bird nests with their new offspring which cleanse and rinse any sense of tension that tries to take up residence within me from time to time. Occasionally a bear will lope by looking for their feed of food. For me, a bear has a way of instantly making one recognize their sense their place! On specific holes we have species of animals that act as spectators for our golfers. For instance, we have brown rabbits on holes 4 and 8 while pheasants are on hole #5. We even have a phantom turtle which calls Hollies home after being
clearly hurt in some altercation. If you have been here, you might see the mounds scattered about the course as fun hazards. They are called “the turtles,” after our ghostly guest. One doesn’t see that side of animal life in most other sporting venues. Wildlife doesn’t live in stadiums, courts, or locations where
sporting events take place. It makes golf a place where a person can gently rejuvenate, regain a sense of human balance, and possess a luminous license to ultimately live a longer life. While financial woes are common in today’s way of life, I nevertheless feel lucky that my work, passion, and life run parallel
and often in direct communion with the animal world. They keep me not only youthful in a grasp of the environment, but unknowingly also lead me along another path in life’s daily unpredictable direction. Pat and Jackie Little own Hollies Executive Golf Course in Port Alberni.

Sunday was another great day on the links at Alberni Golf Club: the sun was shining, the birds were singing and Gerry Fagan shot a net 59. (rah rah rah). In Men’s Club action, Craig Acland came through with the game of the day, shooting a gross score of 72. Way to go Craig. On the net side on things Glen Trask shot a 68 to capture the low handicap division, while the high handicap division was won by Fagan. The closest to the pin winners were Darren Van Dyk on No. 2, Phil Anker went home with $30, with his Charity closest to the pin on No. 4. No one managed to hit
the green on No. 13 and Al Wright had the closest to the pin on No. 17. In the skins competition, there is still no winner on no 16 in the low handicap division, on Sunday it was worth $340. In the high handicap division, Phil Anker got a net 3 on No. 5, Dave Mann had a net 2 on No. 10 and Jim Rhodes had a net 2 on No. 16. All three walked away with $30 each. Just a reminder there won’t be Men’s Club for the next two weeks. This coming weekend is the West Coast Amateur, with plenty of spot available if you care to play in the tournament. The following Sunday, June 22, will be the Ladies West Coast.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Elmer after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 71 years old. Predeceased by his mother and father Helen and John, he is survived by his loving wife Margret of 48 years, Son Randy (Nicole), Nadine (Darryll), his four grandchildren Shelby, Dallas, Elena and Sarah and 6 siblings Melvin (Bernie), Bob (Donna), Eileen, John (Sherry), Dean (Glenys) and Peter. Elmer was born in Scott, Saskatchewan on April 16, 1943. He worked in the potash mines near Saskatoon until 1969 before moving his family to the west coast of British Columbia. He settled in Port Alberni to begin work as a logger for M&B Sproat Lake Division. A short time later he found work in the pulp and paper industry. He remained there for 37 years until his retirement. Elmer was known by many as the ‘gentle giant’ with the heart of a lion. He was a kind and loving man who always had a helping hand to offer others. He lived his life to the fullest and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at the Notre Dame Parish, 4731 Burke Rd., Port Alberni. A coffee and tea luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the parish basement hall. In lieu of owers, donations may be made to the John Paul II Catholic School in Port Alberni. The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District is looking for a temporary, on-call Building Inspector/Building Bylaw Enforcement Officer. The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the BC Building Code as well as a solid understanding of construction methods and materials. Excellent communication skills, computer literacy and a valid BC Driver’s License are required for this position. In general terms, the Building Inspector/Bylaw Enforcement Officer provides the public with building inspection services, inspection of wood burning appliances and deals with building bylaw infractions. The successful candidate will be required to be a member of CUPE Local 118 (Alberni-Clayoquot Unit). The rate of pay is as per the Collective Agreement. About 1,000 people attended 19 shows in the 2013 Port Alberni festival, Hunt recalled. “The shows were reasonably attended. Some people did really well and other people didn’t do as well, but that’s typical of any Fringe.” The alternative
theatre festival got good support from the local media in its first year in Port Alberni, Hunt said. The number of shows this year has dropped to 12 because most of the out-of-town performances run for 90 minutes, Hunt explained. That limits the number of shows that can be presented at the main venue in the Capitol Theatre. A couple of small shows will be held at

the Bavarian Centre, around the corner from the Capitol on Fourth Avenue. Hunt estimates she helped the non-profit Art Matters Society to produce a fringe festival for 17 years in Abbotsford and Mission in the Fraser Valley.
After Hunt moved to Port Alberni two years ago, she was asked to do the same in her new community. It went well last year, gained the approval of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals, and is back for a second year from
June 19–22. Hunt, a playwright and former editor, “loves the instant feedback you get from writing, performing and putting your works on, all within a matter of months.” She likes the fact that performers don’t have to be approved by a jury before appearing at the festival. “We don’t judge whether their work is good, bad or ugly.” Performances at the Capitol include A Capital Offense, a light-hearted romp by Joan DonaldsonYarmey; Zelda: The Last Flapper by the Portal Players; The Hatter, with pro actor Andrew Wade portraying The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland; Dancing With Fish, about a lifelong friendship between two eccentric men, by the Sunshine Clown Company; and the New Bitts of Tease Cabaret, billed as burlesque at its best.
