Athletic, artistic groups get government funds Barry Coulter

Provincial grants have recently been awarded to several East Kootenay athletic and artistic organizations.

Six community organizations received $95,220 in gaming grants as part of the province’s Community Gaming Grant Program, the Government of B.C.

Pink in all shades was the colour of choice on Saturday, May 31, at Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet in Cranbrook. Hosting Pink Day at the store for the second consecutive year, Top Crop’s goal was to raise awareness and funds for women fighting cancer. Lynnette Wray, Support Programs Coordinator with the Canadian Cancer Society at the East Kootenay office (left), receives a cheque for $1,089 from Top Crop’s Megan Fisher. The money was raised through the sale of special ‘Power of Pink’ planters and other plant specials and events. The funds will go directly to the Cancer Society’s Financial Support Program which gives assistance to people in financial need for transportation and accommodation when travelling to and from cancer treatment. Council sits on backyard chicken debate A r n e P e t rys h e n Townsman Staff

Could the hens come back to roost on Cranbrook backyard chickens?

Twelve-year-old Sierra Oatman hopes so.

The Highlands Elementary student sent a letter to the city on the topic with the hopes that the topic could be revisited.

“I’m writing to you because I want to know how to change your mind about owning laying hens in town,” Sierra wrote.

The letter appeared in the agenda package for the Monday, June 9, council meeting. Sierra was in the audience with her mom.

In the letter, Sierra argued that it doesn’t make make sense that people in Vancouver are free to raise up to four hens in their backyard, while in Cranbrook the municipal bylaw prohibits it.

“I do not understand why a big city of around two million people can raise hens in the city, but a small town of about 22,000 people cannot,” she wrote.

Sierra said that she wants to eat healthy and raise hens that have not been fed steroids or hormones.

In Vancouver, residents are not allowed roosters, other fowl or livestock.

Mayor Stetski noted city council had a discussion on the topic two years ago, when a

resident brought forward a request to raise not just chickens, but other animals in Cranbrook.

“As I recall, he wanted other animals besides chickens to be kept in Cranbrook, including goats and turkeys and other things,” Stetski said. It was voted down.

“I do not understand why a big city of around two million people can raise hens in the city, but a small town of about 22,000 people cannot.”

Sierra Oatman Stetski said he would bring a motion back to a future council meeting to consider allowing chickens in the city.

Sierra wrote that Vancouver residents can keep hens under these simple rules as long as they meet the residential requirements: • A maximum of four hens; • Hens must be four months or older; • No other fowl or livestock are allowed; • Eggs, meat and manure can’t be used for commercial purposes; no backyard slaughtering.

Coun. Angus Davis supported Sierra’s letter.

“I lived in a small community for a number of years where people didn’t want chickens,” Davis said. “One man decided he was going to have chickens.

He had them in his yard and they never caused anybody one bit of trouble. I don’t know what’s going to happen with this, but as long as I’m on this council I support you one hundred per cent.”

Coun. Sharon Cross said the letter also speaks to a wider issue of food security and poverty reduction.

“I think there is a place for having chickens, how that would look ... every community does it slightly different,” Cross said.

Cross noted that she bought free-range eggs until she found out that the requirements for the “free-range” designation are not very high.

“A free-range chicken only gets a three to four foot space in which to roam,” she said. “I grew up on a farm; I don’t think that’s freerange.”

She now buys from a local farm.

Coun. Gerry Warner said a lot of people are disconnected from the origins of their food.

“People today tend to believe that food isn’t food until it’s wrapped in styrofoam or some sort of package. We’re losing that connection,” he said. “If this comes

up again, you can count on my vote.”

Denise Pallesen said that although keeping chickens is currently prohibited in the city, there are stores that sell organic and free-range chickens and eggs in Cranbrook.

Coun. Diana J. Scott had some concerns with chickens being kept in the city.

“It sounds lovely in principle, but there are things to take into consideration,” Scott said.

The City of Vancouver passed its backyard chicken bylaw in 2011, while New Westminster has had a bylaw regulating backyard chickens since 1968. North Vancouver allows for up to eight hens to be kept in a backyard of certain residences, under a bylaw passed in 2012. The New Westminster bylaw is more restrictive than Vancouver’s bylaw and sets limits on how small a property can be to have chickens and how near to a neighbour’s yard it can be. By comparison, Vancouver’s bylaw is directed at an urban hen raiser with much looser restrictions.

The City of Vancouver bylaw sets the limits of at least 0.37 sq. metres of coop floor area per hen and 0.92 sq. metres of roofed outdoor enclosure.

Cranbrook council received Sierra’s letter as information.

Police identify 75-year-old man killed during break-in and robbery in Rossland robbery Val Rossi Trail Daily Times

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in tracking down the individual(s) responsible for the death of Rossland resident Thomas Feeney.

Preliminary findings from an ongoing investigation lead investigators to believe that this is a “random incident” or a “crime of opportunity” against the 75-yearold man who was recently killed at his residence on Feeney Road, Supt. Tim Head, district operations officer for the Southeast District RCMP ‘E’ Division confirmed at a press conference Monday.

“This appears to be a break and enter type incident that

ended in a violent and disturbing homicide,” said Head, who expressed his condolences to family members, including son Tom Feeney and son-in-law Colin Lohrer who sat in the crowd of about 30.

Lohrer expressed the family’s devastation in a statement to the press, pleading the public to come forward with any details that could pertain to the tragedy.

“We are all in shock to know he has been taken from us in such a tragic way,” he said. “It has been a devastating blow to our family.”

Last Thursday at about 11 a.m. the Trail RCMP responded to the call regarding the discovery of a body, later identified as Feeney.

The investigation has deter-

mined that specific items are now missing from the farm, such as an Emerson 40-inch LCD television; five firearms, including a unique rifle described as a Pedersoli/Cimarron Arms 1874 Sharps 45-70 (an extremely unique weapon with an octagon-shaped barrel and a distinctive firing mechanism and sight); and ammunition reloading equipment (including a distinctive 45 calibre projectile).

Police have posted detailed information and images to the provincial RCMP website in hopes of connecting these items with a suspect.

Anyone with information that could be related to this homicide is asked to call the tipline at 1-877-987-8477.

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation’s series of rotating strikes has resumed for the third week. In School District 5, teachers will be on strike Thursday, June 12.

SD5 Superintendent Lynn Hauptman said in an open let-

ter to parents this week that while school facilities will remain open under the supervision of School District staff, “we will be unable to provide students with instruction or appropriate supervision during this period of job action. We are therefore request-

ing that parents keep their children at home Thursday,” Hauptman added that “it is the sincere hope of the Board of Education that this dispute will be concluded quickly and normal school operations will resume as quickly as possible.”

On Monday and Tuesday,

teachers were voting provincewide for a full-scale strike mandate. More than 40,000 teachers were eligible to vote.

The results were to be announced late Tuesday night.

“The role of the committee isn’t to reinvent the wheel, it’s to see that it keeps rolling properly,” he said.

CAO Wayne Staudt clarified that the item was referred by council through the committee.

He said that Coun. Warner was correct, the city was already doing a lot of the things and the items were chosen to show that the city is working together with Interior Health to make a better community.

The fourth recommendation was a request to have council further direct the committee to identify action opportunities for the future within each of the other recommendations.

A motion to remove the third and fourth recommendations was voted down. The original motion was carried, and opposed by councillors Scott and Pallesen.

“Do we want the committees to sort of tell council what the priorities are, or do we want council to say this is what we would like you to concentrate on?” she said.

“We want excited committees, we want to have ideas and a progressive city, but at the same time I think we have to be careful about planning to take on too much.”

Council passed recommendations from the Wellness and Heritage Committee at the Monday, June 9, meeting. The first of the four was to enter into formal discussions with the school district.

“From my perspec-

tive it’s great to see the move towards the old Muriel Baxter Elementary School,” Mayor Wayne Stetski said.

Stetski said city staff and school district staff are working on discussions for the property.

He credited Superintendent Lynn Hauptman for being open to discussions.

“Hopefully we’ll get there,” Stetski said. “This seems to be a great place to do this.”

RCMP gather to honour the fallen

Local RCMP and firefighters joined members of the public on Tuesday, June 10, to share in funeral services for three fallen New Brunswick officers.

About 25 Cranbrook RCMP officers and firefighters marched from the Tamarack Centre to the Alliance Church on Tuesday, June 10.

The funeral proceedings for three RCMP officers who died in an ambush in New Brunswick last week were broadcast by CBC and streamed to a large screen at the Alliance Church.

Constables Dave Ross, Douglas Larche and Fabrice Gevaudan were gunned down June 4 after responding to a report of a man with firearms in a residential neighbourhood in the northwest area of Moncton. Constables Eric Dubois and Darlene Goguen were injured.

Around 100 people gathered in Cranbrook to watch the regimental funerals together. Cpl. Barry Graham with the Cranbrook RCMP said it’s just the latest show of support from the local community since last week’s tragedy.

The detachment has been flooded with cards and messages for the RCMP, social media has been awash with signs of support, and people have been stopping members in the street to show their appreciation.

“People have been stopping into the office here, and when we walk down the street, people are outright thanking us for our service,” said Cpl. Graham.

“We deal with a lot of the negative things that happen. Everybody is looking for somebody to fix a problem and we rarely get the feedback from the people we are out there to support and help.”

The outpouring of support has been uplifting, he went on.

“It’s heartwarming to see the response to such a tragedy. It gives you a little renewed enthusiasm for doing what we do and why we do it.”

A former Cranbrook RCMP officer, Cst. Travise Dow, is now stationed in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and was part of the force that searched for the Moncton shooter last week.

“You are always concerned for everybody but concerned most especially for the people you know,” said Cpl. Graham.

The RCMP is now reflecting on the Moncton tragedy and trying to grow from it.

“Every time somebody in the police universe gets injured, we are trained to look at things and say, ‘Okay, what would I have done? Would I have done anything different?’ In this situation, there is nothing anyone could have done differ-

“You can’t start the day, put on your duty belt and plan for that.”

But he said the incident has been a reminder for many in the force. In training, RCMP are reminded to be on high alert at all times.

“As you pull over hundreds if not thousands of vehicles, you tend to get more and more complacent,” said Cpl. Graham.

“It’s a wake-up call for us, going to each and every call. We are not immortal. There are bad people out there. If it can happen in a moderate sized Atlantic Canadian town, it can happen in Cranbrook.”

But just as powerful as that feeling is the

sense of pride in how the RCMP handled the search and takedown of the gunman, who was arrested without police firing a shot. Now they are binding together to mourn the fallen.

“It’s almost like someone severing a tendon. You will never get that tendon back – those members will never be back – but the rest of the tendons get stronger to accommodate for it. That’s the goal: to come out of every situation, good, bad or ugly, a little bit stronger with the impetus to focus our training, get more equipment, be a little bit different – without being jaded; we don’t have to be paranoid but just a little more prepared for every shift.”

“This bill creates two zones that fundamentally have different purposes for what the ALR is supposed to be all about,” Brown told me during an interview Thursday on Voice of B.C. on Shaw TV. “I can tell you it’s a very, very dangerous precedent, to allow any government to say that a third party can allow exclusions based on extenuating circumstances, economic development, or frankly anything cabinet wants to write in by decree — as it can in this bill.

“It gives the NDP, if they want to grab it, a big election issue — to just promise to repeal it, which it should be repealed. And I think it will be a very, very damaging piece of legislation to farmland in the long term, because of all the farmers that do want to develop land — and many will, because of the value of their property as they get older.”

The Liberals have been acting as if the fight over Bill 24 ended when they mustered their majority to pass the legislation through the house. But if events play out as their critics suspect, the controversy is just getting underway.

Former Kootenay Ice players are in the middle of chasing their respective league championships, one of which clinched a title on Monday night in the ECHL. James Martin, a former defenceman who was a part of the 2011 WHL-championship team, won the Kelly Cup with the Alaska Aces, defeating the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-0 to win the series in six games.

Martin, a prospect with the Calgary Flames, has played two full seasons in the ECHL, one with the Utah Grizzlies and the most recent campaign with the Aces.

He posted two goals and 15 assists in the regular season, and suited up for 11 games in their playoff run to the Kelly Cup final.

Martin went pro after the Ice went to the Memorial Cup, but his entry-level contract expires this off-season.

Martin enjoyed a four-year career in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos and the Kootenay Ice. In 189 games, he tallied 19 goals and 33 assists with a plus-three rating.

In the AHL, former Ice captain Jason Jaffray is locked in a battle for the league title with the St. John’s IceCaps, who are facing the Texas Stars.

The series stands even at 1-1.

Jaffray has been a career minor-leaguer for the most part, suiting up for 277 AHL games, and currently serves as the captain for the IceCaps.

He’s been in the system with the Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets, spending the majority of his time in the NHL with the latter two teams.

He made the Kootenay Ice as a 17-year-old during the club’s first year in Cranbrook, winning a WHL title in 2000 but got traded to Swift Current before the Memorial Cup run in 2002.

Jaffray led the team in points during the regular season with 18 goals and 41 assists, and is fifth in team scoring in the playoffs.

Jarret Stoll and the L.A Kings are one win away from their second NHL title in three years as they hold a 3--0 series lead over the New York Rangers.

Stoll, who still holds a few records with the Kootenay Ice, has spent the last 12 years playing professionally in the NHL. He won the Stanley Cup with the Kings two years ago, and is poised to do it again, save for a miraculous comeback from the Blueshirts.

Stoll enjoyed a successful major-junior career with the Ice, winning two WHL titles and the Memorial Cup in 2002. He represented Canada twice in the World Junior Championship where he won a bronze and a silver, serving as team captain the second time around.

He played four seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before landing in Los Angeles via trade in 2008. The Kings signed him to a threeyear contract extension in 2012.

Not only did the Bandits string together four wins this weekend, but they did it with pretty dominant performances.

Especially at bat.

The Cranbrook team downed the Libby Loggers 11-9 and 14-5 on Saturday, and toppled the Whitefish Glacier ‘B’ team 14-0 and 8-4 on Sunday.

Sweeping the Loggers was especially sweet, seeming as the team did it on their home turf, said Devon Marra.

“It felt pretty good. I think everyone was a bit nervous, coming into our first couple home games. I think we played two great games and shut them down pretty well in front of all our fans, so that was a good feeling,” he said.

The Bandits pulled out the first win at 11-9, but faced a 9-4 deficit after the third inning.

However, a strong performance in the fifth at the plate allowed the Bandits to score seven runs and take the lead and the win.

“It was great to come

back and win that first game, because we were down five and to rally and get seven runs to take a three-run lead and shut them down and keep the lead to win was huge,” said head coach Paul Mrazek.

Added Marra: “We didn’t get our heads down. That’s something we’ve been working on.

Sometimes we get our heads down and get down about it, but we stayed in the game, chipped away and battled back.”

The Bandits rolled through the rematch, taking an early lead— including a seven-run tally in the second inning—to win 14-5.

“I think it was just the momentum,” continued Marra. “We came came back and won that [first] game, it was a good game and just kept everything going into the next game.”

Mrazek said he definitely noticed the confidence coming out of his dugout in the second half of the home double-header.

“Game One was quite sloppy on both sides with errors, but

Game Two, that’s when we started hitting the ball on the ground and doing a much better job offensively,” he said.

Following their set at home on Saturday, the Bandits went down to Whitefish for their double-header with the Glacier ‘B’ team, coming up with another pair of victories.

“That carried into the Whitefish games, where the kids were hitting the ball on the ground a lot, which makes it tough on the defence, rather than hitting the ball in the air,” said Mrazek.

The first came via a 14-0 shutout, where Marra gave up only four hits in five innings and threw for six strikeouts.

After only four innings, the Cranbrook team had build up their 14run lead.

“We know Glacier B is a team we can play with and beat, so we just went out there and did what we do best— we swung the sticks really well that day and had about 15 hits that first game, so that was good,” Marra said.

MIAMI - Kawhi Leonard and San Antonio Spurs shot their way into history - and back into the lead in the NBA Finals.

Leonard scored a career-high 29 points, and the Spurs made a finals-record 75.8 per cent of their shots in the first half in a 111-92 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night that gave them a 2-1 lead.

The Spurs made 19 of their first 21 shots and finished 25 of 33 in the first half, bettering the 75 per cent shooting by Orlando against the Lakers in the 2009 finals.

“I don’t think we’ll ever shoot 76 per cent in a half ever again,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

The Spurs led by as much as 25 and were only briefly challenged in their second lopsided victory in the series.

Unlike Game 1, when they didn’t pull away until the final minutes, the Spurs were up big before halftime in this one.

Returning to the arena where they were oh-so-close to winning a fifth championship last year, the Spurs came out playing like they were trying to build a lead that was impossible to blow.

They shot 13 of 15 and led 41-25 lead after

the first quarter, then hit their first six shots of the second in front of a stunned crowd in Miami to go ahead 55-30.

Leonard scored only 18 points in the first two games, looking frustrated while getting into foul trouble trying to defend James in Game 2. But he had his outside shot working early and the effect on the Spurs’ offence was obvious. He made his first six shots and finished 10 of 13 from the field.

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade had 22 points for the Heat, who host Game 4 on Thursday.

seed played three consecutive home games - the Spurs would have a chance to wrap it up in San Antonio on Sunday in Game 5 if they can win Thursday.

Chris Bosh took only four points and scored nine points for the Heat, who for the second straight year will have to overcome a 2-1 finals deficit after being blown out in Game 3.

This rout came on their home floor, where they had been 8-0 this post-season and had won a franchise-record 11 in a row since the Spurs beat them in Game 1 last year.

Manu Ginobili scored 11 for the Spurs, who dropped Game 2 thanks to some mistakes down the stretch, then rebounded with a level of ruthless execution that had never been seen before.

They inserted Boris Diaw into the lineup, countering Miami’s small lineup and creating more ball movement that clearly helped Leonard. The game got off to a crisp start, with the Spurs making their first five shots and Miami opening 4 for 4.

Turned out San Antonio was just getting started.

Coach Erik Spoelstra said he would keep communicating with James as he did in Game 2 to make sure there were no lingering

problems from the cramps that forced him to miss the final minutes of the opener.

But there was no way he could rest James early because James was the only one keeping the Heat in the game. He had 14 of their first 20 points, but even James couldn’t keep up with the Spurs’ pace.

The Spurs “came out at a different gear than what we were playing at, and it just seemed we were on our heels the most part of the first half,” Spoelstra said.

Miami cut it 14 late in the first half, but the Spurs closed with a 9-2 burst to make it 7150.

The Heat finally got into it in the third, running off 10 straight points to cut a 17point deficit to 81-74 on a drive by Norris Cole, who had replaced an ineffective Mario Chalmers.

That was as close as Miami would get, as the Spurs pulled away in the fourth.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The B.C. Lions turned to a familiar face when their ground game was in tatters late last season, and Stefan Logan is looking forward to once again exploiting his unique backfield partnership with Andrew Harris in 2014.

“It’s like ketchup and mustard,” Logan said of the Lions’ running back duo. “If you don’t have ketchup and mustard on your hamburger, it won’t be any good.”

Logan was a dynamic threat for the Lions in 2008 before jumping to the NFL, but when the phone stopped ringing with offers down south he decided on a return to his former CFL club.

“As I was at home waiting on calls I was working out and staying in shape and stuff like that,” said Logan. “When I talked to the B.C. Lions I was more than willing to

come up here and help us win games.”

A leaky offensive line and a tendency to abandon the ground attack meant the Lions were without a 100-yard rusher for 11 straight contests in 2013, but the speedy Logan’s injection into the lineup helped the situation improve almost overnight.

A more south-runner, Harris was no longer the only focus for defences, and both he and Logan found some traction as the Lions ran for almost 200 yards a game over the season’s final three weeks. “(Harris) does a lot of different things that I don’t do,” Logan said at training camp last week. “He’s more of a downhill, patient runner and hits the hole. I’m more of a slasher, getting inside and outside.

“He has the ability to do certain things that I’m not that great at, and I can do certain things that

he can’t do. That’s what makes it such a great running back (combination).”

Despite all the struggles last season, Harris still managed to rush for 998 yards and seven touchdowns. Clearly frustrated at times, the Winnipeg native never criticized his coaches or teammates and is now looking forward to having Logan as a backfield counterpart for a full season.

“It’s going to be a great giveand-take scenario. Having two guys to spell each other and feed off each other ... any time he makes a play, I’m going to want to make a play,” said Harris. “I think we both bring a different skill set and that’s something we can utilize. Having us both on the field at the same time is going to create mismatches with linebackers and in the pass game as well.

“I think no matter what we do we’re going to be productive.”

SAO PAULO, Brazil It’s almost time. The day Brazilians have been anxiously waiting for is finally arriving.

Brazil plays Croatia on Thursday to get the home World Cup underway, beginning its quest for a sixth world title almost seven years after the nation was picked as host.

After so much talk about delays, protests and problems, fans at last are getting a chance to cheer for the national team on home soil in football’s showcase tournament.

If Brazil wins the

opening game, the fact that the stadium in Sao Paulo isn’t even fully finished yet will quickly be forgotten. A loss, quite simply, is unthinkable for a nation whose identity is so closely linked to its football team.

Brazil hasn’t hosted the World Cup since 1950, when it endured a heartbreaking loss to Uruguay in the final.

This time, everybody knows that only the title will be enough to please the home crowd.

“We are all eager to get started, we are just counting the days,” Brazil midfielder Ramires said Tuesday. “We know that the fans have confi-

dence in our team and they are behind us. We have to do everything possible to try to win this World Cup. We know everybody is expecting us to do it.”

Boosted by the home crowd, Brazil is one of the main favourites to recapture the trophy won by Spain four years ago in South Africa. But the other usual World Cup contenders will be trying to spoil the party in the land of football, including Germany, Italy, Argentina and the Netherlands, runner-up in 2010.

Brazil is trying to become the first nation to win the World Cup at

home since France did it in 1998. The Brazilians were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the last two tournaments, to France in 2006 and the Netherlands in 2010.

A festive World Cup atmosphere has taken over Brazil in the run-up to the tournament despite the country’s preparation problems and the threats of protests. Brazilians had been slow to get into the World Cup mood, but now streets are being painted with the green and yellow colours and local flags are being displayed on windows of homes across the country.

PINEHURST, N.C. Now that he’s got that pesky major out of the way, Justin Rose is learning to savour the quest for his next big title.

He’s not nearly as optimistic about England’s chances in the World Cup. Rose is the reigning champion heading into the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, a player who is certainly more at ease with his place in golf now that he’s got one of those prestigious titles on his resume.

“In the last few months, I sort of realized what I have achieved and it’s time to

embrace it, enjoy it, and let that be the strength for me to go on and win more,” Rose said Tuesday.

Of course, there’s another big sporting event beginning this week, one that will certainly have the attention of Rose and his fellow English players.

Their soccer-mad nation has a huge opening match in the World Cup against Italy on Saturday, the soccer game scheduled to begin in Brazil about the time the third round of the Open is wrapping up in North Carolina.

Reflecting the mood of his homeland, Rose is not very hopeful.

England’s only World

Cup title came in 1966 and expectations are low for this team, a youthful squad playing in one of the most difficult groups.

“I would say there’s probably more chance of one of us winning the major than England winning the World Cup,” said Rose, among 11 English players in the Pinehurst field. “Sad to say.”

Rose’s primary focus will be on his bid to become the first repeat U.S. Open champion in a quarter-century.

Last year’s triumph at Merion had been in the making for nearly that long, ever since Rose finished fourth as an 18-year-old amateur at the 1998 British Open.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: After my parents died, my sister, “Estelle,” moved into our old family home. Three siblings own the house, but Estelle and her husband have lived there for the past six years, rent-free.

There were always a lot of cats in our neighborhood, and my mother used to put out food for them. Estelle now does the same, and it seems every cat in the area has migrated to our property. There are at least 30. My sister has named them all and spent a fair amount of money on veterinary bills. Worse, she now lets the cats inside the house, and they are everywhere. The backyard is one big litter box.

Her husband doesn’t care. He’s at his office all day.

Estelle spends her entire day feeding and cleaning up after these cats. I worry that they will pick up some disease from the skunks and raccoons that hang around the yards. I recently noticed that she has covered the cooktop, and I don’t think she uses it anymore. She showed me a picture of a dozen cats roaming over the kitchen table. She thought it was delightful.

I have talked to both of my sisters about giving the cats to a shelter, but they refuse. I know it costs a lot of money to feed and house these cats, and Estelle doesn’t have a lot. I guess I enable her, because I often give her money. I feel like a pushover, and my husband resents it. It’s hard to visit her and too expensive to stay in motels and eat out every night.

I think Estelle is depressed. She complains about feeling gloomy. Her children rarely visit. When I think of my old homestead, it makes me sad. It’s as if my family home was stolen from me. What can I do? -- No Cat Lover

Dear No: Estelle seems to be an animal hoarder. We are surprised her husband isn’t more bothered by this, and perhaps you could enlist his help in limiting the presence of the cats. If you believe Estelle is not taking proper care of the cats that are living with her, you can report the situation to the ASPCA. You also could tell Estelle that you are worried about her health and the condition of the family home. Otherwise, unless you and your other sister decide to sell the house, your choice is simply whether or not to visit and how often.

Dear Annie. A young female member of my family has gotten fat, and I asked her the reason for the change. Now she won’t speak to me. Everyone says I made a mistake, because no one should ever ask a woman why she is obese. I care about this young woman, and that is why I put the question to her. I don’t want her to grow as big as another member of my family, that’s all. -- Concerned Old Man in West Hills Dear Concerned: It is rude to ask anyone why they are fat (or skinny, short, tall, old or any number of intrusive personal questions). What exactly do you expect them to say? You may have meant well, but your approach was insensitive. People who are obese are quite aware of the fact. We suggest you apologize and say you are simply worried about her. Then change the subject.

Dear Annie: I totally agree with “Just One More Day,” whose family members have all died, and she finds it difficult to listen to co-workers gripe about their relatives.

My mother and three sisters have passed away, and I am only 36. I live next door to my 82-year-old dad and treasure my time with him. My only brother lives almost 3,000 miles away, but we make sure to call each other regularly and visit once a year. Families need to stop holding grudges. -- Nicole in Pennsylvania

PONIC, Doris (nee Bourquin) The family of Doris Ponic of Belle River, Ontario would like to let friends old and new, know that she passed away peacefully at Hospice Residential Home in Windsor, Ontario.

Doris was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan on August 18, 1931. She and her husband William had met and raised their children in the Windsor area until 1967 when they moved to Cranbrook, B.C. Two years ago they decided to â&#x20AC;&#x153;come back homeâ&#x20AC;? and were enjoying their new house in Belle River. Doris is survived by her loving husband William, of 67 years. Her son Dennis (Darlene), daughters Mary (Don) and Linda (Robert), numerous nieces and nephews on the Ponic side, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Doris was always very proud of her home and had a deep love for her family. Mom was always sharing news of her children with neighbours and especially with Ruth Byrnes, whom remains her longest and dearest friend.

She has treasured renewing their friendship and the phone calls and time they have spent together since returning to Windsor and area. A warm and heartfelt thank you to the Ponic family who have been so very helpful since their return home, and for the ongoing support, love and companionship that Lucille has and continues to so lovingly provide. Also we would like to express our gratitude to the neighbours from the 400 block of Cooper Crescent, and others for the offerings of ongoing support, cards, notes and treats. A special thanks to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friday Night Galloping Gourmetsâ&#x20AC;?, Maureen and Al. What a treat it is, and how wonderful you are! Thank you all.

Cremation has taken place and Dorisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cremated remains will be memorialized in White Swan Lake, B.C. Arrangements entrusted to Melady Funeral Home (519-728-1500). Bees descend on dome-shaped Alberta home C an a d ia n Press

BLACKFALDS, Alta.

- A couple in the Alberta town of Blackfalds just north of Red Deer is dealing with some unexpected house guests — a swarm of thousands of bees.

“All of a sudden we heard something overhead come in and it was these bees,” says Wade Morgan. “They are nesting, or trying to make a nest, by the thousands.

We were just re-roofing and we don’t know what to do; it is incredible.”

The couple live in a dome-shaped home, and Cheryl Morgan thinks that might be what attracted the bees.

“Hopefully they

don’t think they are going to turn our dome house into one humongous bee hive.”

Honey bee swarms are common in the months of June and July, when colonies split into two as a survival strategy.

“Bee keepers’ number one goal is to manage the hives to keep bees from swarming,” says Eliese Watson, who runs Apiaries and Bees for Communities, a Calgary-based group that promotes urban bee keeping.

But she adds it isn’t always possible.

“Now sometimes bees swarm; they naturally want to. And when that occurs it can be

quite spectacular to witness.”

The good news for the Morgans is that bees are gentle at this time of year.

“Before they leave, those bees will gorge on honey and pollen,” says Watson. “And that’s why when you capture a swarm, they are very gentle, calm. They have full stomachs. It’s like having a fistfight after a turkey dinner.”

Watson stresses the importance of bees as pollinators for much of our food, and says life wouldn’t be as sweet without them.

A volunteer with her group is helping to remove the swarm from the Morgans’ home.

JUNEAU, Alaska — A Juneau, Alaska, woman wants to give her daughter an awesome middle name. Literally.

Lisa Flores is seeking court approval to legally change her daughter’s middle name to

Awesome.

The Juneau Empire reports Awesome would replace the given middle name of Contea for 2 1/2-year-old Viviana Flores.

Mom allowed her 11-year-old son to initially pick out his sis-

ter’s name. Dominic wanted her first name to be Danger, something Mom vetoed. He came back with Awesome for a middle name, but Lisa picked “Contea’’ at the last minute.

She now wants the

name changed to honour her son’s wishes and to thank Dominic for all he has done to help her.

He says the “cool’’ name will allow her to tell people all her life that she has an “Awesome’’ middle name.

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. — Experts will examine an anchor recovered north of Seattle to determine if it was from one of the earliest European ships to explore the waters off America’s northwestern coast.

The anchor was

found six years ago by sea-cucumber diver Doug Monk, who formed Anchor Ventures with amateur historian Scott Grimm to bring it to the surface. It was in Admiralty Inlet off Whidbey Island.

The Seattle Times and the Peninsula Daily News report the 900-

pound (408-kilogram) anchor might be the one lost by the HMS Chatham, a Royal Navy survey brig.

The ship accompanied the HMS Discovery as British explorer George Vancouver’s charted the West Coast in 1792.

The anchor was

taken Monday to the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend. It will be prepared for shipping to Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, where experts will try to determine whether it’s really the anchor lost 222 years ago.

LONGVIEW, Texas — A 34-year-old woman who posed as a teenager to enrol as a sophomore at an Texas high school has pleaded guilty to failure to identify.

A judge in Longview on Tuesday sentenced Charity Johnson to 85 days in jail in a plea

agreement.

Johnson was arrested May 13 after a woman who allowed Johnson to stay at her apartment called the police when she discovered Johnson was not a teenager. New Life Christian School officials said Johnson enrolled last October with a guardian and indicat-

ed she was 15 years old.

Johnson told police she was born in 1997 and officers issued her a trespass warning. Authorities later deter-

mined she was much older.

Johnson has served nearly a month in jail.

Longview is about 130 miles east of Dallas.

Regional District of East Kootenay BYLAW 2527 Bylaw Amendment - Wasa The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an application by Marli and Don Price to amend the Electoral Area E Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw.
