STEVEN MAISEY The Regional District of BulkleyNechako is creating a new regional economic development action plan that will be used by the regional district to support the region’s businesses and communities, as well as to build a strong regional economy. In order for the action plan to reflect the local needs and perspectives of the local businesses, it is essential that the regional district hear from local business and community leaders. There are multiple ways to get involved and have your voice heard. The regional district urges business and community leaders to attend a community forum to share ideas about the economic development action plan. These forums were held June 3 in Vanderhoof and Fort St. James, June 4 in Fraser Lake, June 5 in Burns Lake and will be held June 16 in Smithers and Telkwa, June 17 in Houston and June 18 in Granisle. The goals of the economic development action plan are to develop longterm economic prosperity, enhance the region as a great place to live, work and visit, offer a quality of life that serves to attract and retain residents, offer all residents, communities and businesses an opportunity to prosper and to ensure the regional economy is diverse. Lakes District Secondary School held its commencement ceremony for its graduating class of 2014 last Friday. There were 85 students that received their high school diplomas, and a number of those received various awards and bursaries. In a touching moment, the V.A. Montaldi Award was given to the late Pierce Hofer (Below). Pierce’s father was on hand to accept the award, along with his diploma. The trial of a man accused of killing four women in the Vanderhoof - Prince George area began last Monday

Steven Maisey On Monday, June 2, the trial of Cody Legebokoff, the 24-year-old accused of killing four women in the Prince GeorgeVanderhoof area began. Legebokoff, a Fort St. James native, who was living in Prince George at the time of his arrest, is facing four first-degree murder charges in the deaths of 15-year-old Loren Leslie, 35-year-old Cynthia Maas, 35-year-old Jill Stuchenko and 23-year-
old Natasha Montgomery. All four were murdered between 20092010. Leslie, a Fraser Lake native, was last seen Nov.27, 2010. Her body was found that night by a conservation officer off of a remote logging road near Vanderhoof. A RCMP officer had noticed Legebokoff's truck suspiciously leave the remote road and pulled him over. Blood was smeared on Legebokoff's face and legs, as well as a pool of blood in his truck, and he told the RCMP officer he had been deer poaching. It was then that the officer called the conservation officer and the body of Leslie was found. Leslie died of head injuries and a loss of blood. She had arranged to meet up with Legebokoff to buy alcohol over the social media website, Nexopia. Stuchenko was reported missing Oct. 27, 2009, her body was found four days later in a gravel pit on the outskirts of Prince George. Maas was reported missing Sept. 23, 2010, her body was found a few weeks later in a park in Prince George. Montgomery was reported on Sept. 23, 2010, as well, her body has yet to be found. Maas and Stuchenko both suffered blunt force trauma to their heads, along
with other wounds, Crown counsel Joseph Temple told the court Monday. Mass, Stuchenko and Montgomery were all known to have worked in the sex trade The trial is expected to last six to eight months.

Shaun Thomas As the eyes of the LNG world turn to the Northwest, four of the largest liquefied natural gas proponents have come together to push for the export of B.C. gas to Asia. The B.C. LNG Developers Alliance, formed earlier this month, includes Lelu Island terminal developers Pacific NorthWest LNG, Ridley Island LNG developers the BG Group, Shell-led LNG Canada and Chevron-led Kitimat LNG. Rod Maier, manager of external communications with Chevron Canada for Kitimat LNG, said the alliance is still very much in its infancy. While the alliance aims to create a united voice for LNG, the companies will remain competitive in securing agreements and customers.

The time has come to settle
Gas: the other pipeline showdown
Last week marked the second week of rotating strikes by public school teacher’s across B.C. in response to the negotiations between the B.C. Teacher’s Federation (BCTF) and the province, which is represented by the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association. Next week will mark the third week of rotating strikes that has seen teachers in School District 91 take to the picket lines May 28 and June 5. Recently the B.C. Labour Relations Board upheld an employer bid to cut teacher’s pay by 10 per cent in response to these rotating strikes and refusal to perform certain duties outside of the classroom. Now, in response to that decision by the labour relations board, the BCTF will hold a vote June 9-10 about whether or not to support a full scale strike before the school year ends. President of the BCTF, Jim Iker has said that if the strike vote is upheld it would mean a full scale strike within two weeks, the implications of that meaning further cancelled field trips and end of the year report cards not being completed in full. As of now the BCTF wage proposal is 9.75 per cent over a four year period, plus a costof-living adjustment in each year depending on inflation, which estimates the total wage increase to be 12.75 per cent. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association has proposed a 7.5 per cent wage increase over six years, as well as a recently added $1200 signing bonus if a deal is reached before the end of the school year. It is a wage increase that is in line with other public sector agreements, according to chief negotiator, Peter Cameron. Other issues that the two sides are divided on are class size and special needs support staff. Now, no blame should be placed on either side, this is a contract negotiation. Contract negotiations can become quite bitter, and this one happens to be playing out in the public spotlight. Even the biggest companies, such as the NFL, which avoid a lockout two years ago, and famously the NHL, which has had three lockouts and a player’s strike within the last 20 years, argue over how to split up billions of dollars. But enough is enough, the two sides need to sit down at a table and hammer this deal out. Both sides seem to have forgotten in this dispute that who they truly are affecting is the students. The students who need the help outside of the classroom to prepare for provincial exams that will affect what universities they are accepted to. The students who need to take those provincial exams to graduate high school. The students that need those final report cards marked. Education Minister, Peter Fassbender has vowed that provincial exams will continue, but how? A walkout last week was organized by B.C. students over FaceBook in a response to the rotating strikes. Both sides of this negotiation need to set egos aside and focus on how their dispute is negatively affecting those the teach. Are teachers underpaid? Probably. Are both sides at liberty to negotiate a deal that they see as fair for their sides? Yes. But both sides need to sit down and reach an agreement for the benefit of the students.

The prospect of piping diluted heavy oil across northern B.C. and loading it in tankers has generated significant genuine protests, as well as bursts of celebrity nonsense, renta-stunts and instant online petitions. Natural gas pipelines and export terminals, on the other hand, are generally accepted by the public. Premier Christy Clark staked her political future on developing liquefied natural gas exports, and pulled off an upset election win that not even Clark expected. Most of the heat she’s taken on that is focused on her extravagant predictions that LNG will pay off the debt and maybe even get rid of our sales tax. But as I predicted 18 months ago, there’s a shift in the target of professional protesters to natural gas. A reminder of that awaited me on a morning walk to the B.C. legislature during the last week of the May session. At the front gate stood a young woman in a bikini top and shorts, her skin smeared with a dark material, presumably to simulate crude oil. She waved to passing traffic, stretching a banner promoting a website for the “Unist’ot’en camp.” Legislature security intervened to clear the entry walkway before I could ask the protester who was paying her. The fundraising website she was promoting hadn’t been updated since March, but this isn’t the first time this camp has been promoted here. Chevron’s Burnaby oil refinery was also targeted May 30 by protesters who locked themselves to a gate with bicycle locks and chains. They also cited the Unist’ot’en camp and their aim to stop the Pacific Trails pipeline. The camp came to my attention last summer, when it was promoted by one of Victoria’s chronic anarchist protesters, a woman who goes by the name Zoe Blunt. Blunt and other southern protesters documented their trip north to support the camp’s stated goal, to stop the Pacific Trails gas pipeline, planned to supply the Chevron-Apache liquefied natural gas terminal near Kitimat. The camp is on Crown land near Smithers. It was established at the end of a one-lane bridge by two members of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. While that community’s elected council maintains a respectful relationship with the B.C. government, the splinter group that backs the camp has confrontation in mind. The Unist’ot’en website is a jumble of demands and claims that alternates between the Pacific Trails gas pipeline and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal. Like the woman at the legislature, if you want it to be against oil, it’s against oil. A clearer picture of this situation is provided by a relentless blogger named Greg Renouf, who specializes in investigating protesters across Canada. His blog, www.genuinewitty.com, should be required reading for reporters who are presented with slick banners and posturing protesters. Renouf follows the money as well as the familiar faces who pop up at protest after protest. In April he reported that the increasingly militant Council of Canadians is supporting the Unist’ot’en camp, along with what he describes as “a host of NGOs, unions, militant anarchists and professional protesters.” They include Harsha Walia, who organized violent protests against the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Meanwhile in the real world, TransCanada Corp. announced last week its subsidiary NovaGas Transmission has signed an agreement with Chevron and Apache for a gas pipeline that will connect to Pacific Trails. It’s one of four gas pipelines TransCanada has in development for what is planned to be the biggest industrial investment in B.C. history. They can smear it with oil, but gas is the protest industry’s latest target.

Looking to amend essential services Jeff Nagel The province wants completion of secondary school exams and report cards declared an essential service to protect students in the ongoing B.C. teachers strike. The application to extend essential services and avoid "serious and immediate damage" to students was filed Friday with the Labour Relations Board by the B.C. Public School Employers Association. The proposed widening of the existing essential services order so Grade 10 to 12 students can finish the school year and get their final grades would only apply if the B.C. Teachers Federation escalates to a full strike from oneday-a-week rotating strikes in each district. Teachers are voting Monday and Tuesday on a move to a full strike, which could come as soon as June 16. The requested order would cover not just teachers but support staff represented by CUPE and other unions that would not cross teachers' picket lines.

Soapy Smith and Jack McDougal big time gamblers
Poker As I get older I try to remember some of the old stories that are so important to write about as they are going to get lost. This story is about an old Yukon gambler, Jack McDougal, a man full of wonderful stories. During the many years I operated a taxi service here at the landing I used to meet some great characters. The one that stands out in my mind was Jack McDougal and what an interesting man he was and also a good friend. Jack and his wife Mae made their home in a cottage between Van Zanten’s and the Brown Road corner. The old house is long gone and
a new one in its place. Jack came from the Yukon gold rush and moved about and they decided to make Francois Lake their home. This was in the 50s. I drove him around a lot and he told me many stories of the Yukon, which is very interesting to me. Jack told me he knew Soapy Smith one of the well known gamblers of the Yukon. Jack made his living gambling and how he could deal a deck of cards I never could tell. He had lost both his middle fingers on one hand so all he had was a first finger and a little finger so they came together like a claw. It was amazing how he could handle a deck of cards. I liked to watch him. The story was that he was stealing poker chips in a big poker game and someone dropped a big hunting knife on his two middle fingers. I never asked him and he never told me. He was a chain smoker both day and night. Jack always made
money but I never could find out how much. He always paid me well. That was the only income they had. One thing I did know the stakes at both the Bucket of Blood and Jack Wilkinson’s on the island were pretty big and some guys lost more than they made. Jack was always very careful and never had too much to drink, he always kept his mind on the game. A good friend of mine used to play Jack’s table and he said Jack was honest enough for a big time poker player. A little footnote on Soapy Smith. He was a big time gambler and a slight of hand artist. He would sell you a bar of soap wrapped in a ten or twenty dollar bill as you passed him the money he ended up with your 10 or 20, all you had was the bar of soap and your money was gone. I don’t really know how it worked but somehow you ended up the loser. Jack McDougal’s face was covered with cancer
sores and I guess that’s what killed him. Mae, his wife, had her son move to Burns Lake and started the Burns Lake equipment company. His name was Howard Ellis and his partner was Shorty Gill (Wayne). They were good mechanics and did most of my work. After Jack died Mae started a little tea room in town. The building now is gone a big modern 24 hour business has taken its place. A little backtrack on my story. I would take Jack into town on Friday noon and pick him up Saturday noon and take him home. One thing I always noticed about Jack I never saw him smile or hear him laugh a real poker face, maybe that went with the game. The Bay My apartment here at the Tweedsmuir House over looks the Babine Road so I can watch the traffic. Talk about heavy traffic both day and night. How well I remember my many taxi trips I
made to Pendleton Bay. This was a busy place in the 40s and 50s and no doubt into the future years. There were sawmills doing their job in every corner. Trucks going day and night, a busy place. Lots of business places set up and doing well. They even had their own taxi service. I was very fortunate to get a big share of it too. I always got along very well with all the folks there and they would hire me. The bay was a great place to visit. Lots of good memories of it all. It’s all history now, lets hope somebody will write it up so these old times will be remembered. All the heavy traffic at the present brings back those years that I also drove the Babine Road. They were still using horses for skidding and the hauling but the big machinery was already moving into the loading and horses were on the way out. Taxi days I had some good years
in the taxi business, things were booming. The dam was being built for the massive Ootsa Lake flooding. I was kept busy day and some nights. On weekends I would pick up cases of beer and hard liquor by the case. Then sometimes I would haul cases of dynamite out to the dam sight. I was driving a Ford station wagon, it was a big vehicle and could carry seven passengers. I picked up the dynamite by the case and hauled it out. I had to hire a special ferry as it was considered a dangerous cargo and I guess it was. I got paid double for that. Sometimes I would be loaded down. A little story I was leaving town one day and a gentleman from the Southside stopped me for a ride to the ferry so I said jump in. I was already up to speed as the ferry was waiting for me to cross. He turned around and said what’s in those cases
and I said dynamite. He grabbed the door handle and started to get out. His last remarks were please stop I forgot I already had a ride but thanks. He started to walk back to town. As he went out the door I told him there are lots more things more dangerous than dynamite but it fell on deaf ears he was gone. Movie night Last night at the Tweedsmuir House it was movie night. What a surprise when they showed us a number of old time shows and were they ever good. Brought back lots of memories. How well I remember our family kids and all would sit around the TV and watch Gunsmoke. We all enjoyed the shows. As they say time flies and I guess it does. At one time Gunsmoke was one of the most popular westerns on the air and it’s still good. Best I close now with my usual God loves you and so do I.

He went out to eat one night and had some brisket, which is a tough cut of beef from the neck of the cow and is what Texas barbecue is based off of, and loved it, when he asked how they made it he didn't believe what the chef told him. "I said tell me straight up how do you cook it, and they said we smoke it for 20 hours," Duncan said, "they showed me one of their smokers, so I went out back and they have smokers the size of my bus with all these huge doors and shelves and at one corner would be the fire where the smoke comes up and loft up and goes out the chimney at the other end. Local residents Mary Alexander, Doris Martens and Kim Wiebe organized a community garage sale fundraiser for Brian Hanson which was held Saturday, May 31 at the forestry office. They also sold hamburgers and hotdogs. They raised $4100 for Brian. If you would like to make a donation still there is a trust account set up at the Bulkley Valley Credit Union for Brian. Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project
Open House and Invitation to Comment Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Ltd. (Proponent), a wholly owned subsidiary of TransCanada PipeLines Limited, is proposing the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project (proposed Project), an approximately 900 km natural gas pipeline from near the District of Hudson’s Hope to the proposed Pacific NorthWest LNG liquefied natural gas export facility on Lelu Island, within the District of Port Edward. The proposed Project would involve the construction and operation of a 48-inch (1,219 mm) diameter pipeline, metering facility, and three compressor stations, with provision for up to an additional five compressor stations to allow for future expansion. The proposed Project will have an initial capacity of approximately 2.0 billion cubic feet (bcf/day) with potential for expansion to approximately 3.6 bcf/day. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent has now submitted its application (Application) to obtain an environmental assessment certificate, which is required before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. In order to provide information to the public about the Application, and to receive comments from the public, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) invites the public to attend Open Houses at the following locations. Park Boundary Adjustment Application Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Ltd. is preparing a Park Boundary Adjustment application for Anhluut’ukwsim Laxmihl Angwinga’asanskwhl Nisga’a, the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park. As part of this process, BC Parks requires Prince Rupert Gas Transmission to undertake public consultation, including open houses. A distance of 12.1 kilometres of the proposed natural gas transmission line is proposed to follow Highway 113 through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park. An adjustment to the park boundary will be required if the project is to proceed along the proposed route. As part of the open houses, information on the proposed boundary adjustment will be available. Participants will have the opportunity to provide input to inform Prince Rupert Gas Transmission’s Application to BC Parks. The camp, which takes place over seven days at the Bear Claw Lodge in the Kispiox Valley, teaches those who attend how to live off the land, as well as how to protect the land and its resources. The mother of two young children, a girl, Tegan, who will turn three at the end of Judy, and a boy, Torin, who is a year-old, travelled to Smithers to deliver both of her children when they were born. For each child her experience was different. When she was pregnant the first time with Tegan she had planned to travel to Smithers a couple of weeks before she was due so she wouldn't be rushed to get there. She ended up going into labour two weeks early and nearly had her baby in the car on the drive to Smithers, making it to the hospital with about 20 minutes to spare. Taltapin Lake is located 38 km north of Burns Lake. It is very good for deep char fishing, and trout are plentiful. Taltapin can be reached by driving 19 km on the Babine Lake Road, and another 19 km on the Augier/Taltapin Road. Bike to work week a success for the Burns Lake Steven Maisey
The results are in and bike to work week in Burns Lake was a rousing success. Eight different teams biked over 1400 km and burned over 43,000 calories doing so. The seven teams were the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Burnt Bikes, Babine Forest Products, College of New Caledonia, Village of Burns Lake, Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako and Free Growing Forestry. As well, there were a number of individuals who entered as their own team. In total, Burns Lake had a total of 59 riders from seven teams and three individual riders, including 42 new riders that sign up. The prize winners were as follows. The grand prize winner was Sophie Shaffer, who won a multi-use membership, Tina Giesbrecht and Krystin St. Jean who both won a free bike tune up from Burnt Bikes, Pat Dube, who won a Burns Lake Mountain Bike Association membership and David Ashurst, who won one Big Pig draw. Jeff Ragsdale, Development Services Coordinator for Burns Lake said, "We are very proud of our community and the number of kilometers ridden for bike to work week 2014."

Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad announced the Village of Fraser Lake is receiving a sponsored Crown grant of 2.22 hectares of land to construct the Silver Birch Seniors’ Housing assisted living residential complex. The sponsorship grant is valued at $41,000, the current market value of the land. This grant will allow the village to secure land adjacent to the existing seniors’ assisted living complex ensuring residents can stay in the Village of Fraser Lake rather than moving to other communities. The planned assisted living residence will be built and operated by Fraser Lake and District Senior Citizens Home Society. Helping to alleviate stress

We got to Smithers and after we got to the hospital Tegan was born about 20 minutes later,” DeLury said, “it was incredibly quick.” During her second pregnancy, DeLury made sure she was in Smithers before going into labour. She stayed with her sister for three weeks prior to her due date, and ended up delivering her baby on time at the hospital in Smithers. Even though her two experiences were very different, the first almost delivering a baby in a car, and the second having plenty of time to get to the hospital to deliver the baby, DeLury wouldn’t want to go through either again. “Both very different experiences, but both very stressful and I wouldn’t want to do either one again,” DeLury said. The reason behind it, DeLury points out is that at
that point in a pregnancy, the natural instincts are to be nesting, and that taking that space away to move somewhere that while may be familiar to you physically, it isn’t what you have been used to. She says that the new maternity ward is great, but adds that to be able to take it a step further and be able to do complicated births in Burns Lake would be huge. In order to do that, Burns Lake would need an operating room at the new hospital, something that has been discussed, but isn’t being built in the new facility. DeLury doesn’t want people to get the wrong impression. “Don’t get me wrong the maternity ward is great,” DeLury said, “I just think it’s really important for women to be able to have their babies in town. If I could do it again and only have to drive 20 mins to town to have a baby I mean my goodness it’d be so easy.” The new hospital in Burns Lake is expected to open in January 2015.

The camp is for children, ages 10-15, and is split over two separate weeks. The younger children, ages 10-12, will spend a week at the camp from July 16-23, while the older children, ages 13-15, will spend a week at the camp from Aug. 12-19. However, the person that is selected by van Zanten will attend the camp the week that best fits into their schedule and when they're available. During the week, they will learn a number of skills, including how to catch salmon from the river, how to build a shelter in the forest and how to identify different plant, animal and tree species, among other things. This is an issue that van Zanten has always been passionate about, and the real turning point for her was when she became a mother. She felt that her daughter deserved to have the same quality of life that she's experiencing. "My family, we are completely connected to the land. My dad's a farmer, I grow my own food and
we drink the water right from the lake, so to lose that is huge, it's a huge part of who we are," van Zanten said. The hope for van Zanten is to make sending a child to this camp an annual thing. She hopes to partner with the Lakes District Clean Waters Coalition to help fundraise each year. Eventually, she would like to set up her own camp. Applicants must be between the ages of 10-15, and send in their application via email no later than Saturday, June 28. To apply, the applicant must answer four simple questions, which are, what is your favourite way to connect with the land, what does the Lakes District mean to you, why would you like to attend and what do you fight for? Then they will send their answers to those questions to info@rachellevanzanten.com. The recipient off the fund will be selected shortly after the deadline date

Ever wonder how, when you leave your computer unplugged for a while, it remembers the date and time? Your computer actually has a small 3 volt battery in it, similar to what you might find in a digital watch. It performs a similar task, giving power to an important part of your computer that is in charge of basic settings and keeping time. But what happens when this battery fails? The answer is not much, at least not at first. But the next time the power goes out or you unplug your computer to move it, you may notice some strange behavior. First of all the date and time will reset to back several years or more to when the motherboard was originally manufactured. You might start having issues with website security certificates, as the encryption used is often related to the date and time. Certain calendar events might also be off, or automated warnings may not show up when you programed them to. Windows Updates might not show up, or the Updater itself might generate strange errors. If you notice these sorts of problems, all is not lost. Just like a watch, the battery can be changed and everything can be set right again.
