Police seeking information on Rossland homicide Thomas Feeney, 75, killed at his home on Feeney Road BY VALERIE ROSSI Times Staff
Police are seeking the public's assistance in tracking down the individual(s) responsible for the death of Rossland resident Thomas Feeney. Preliminary findings from an ongoing investigation leads investigators to believe that this is a “random incident” or a “crime of opportunity” against the 75-year-old man who was recently killed at his residence on Feeney Road, Supt. Tim Head, district operations officer for the Southeast District RCMP 'E' Division confirmed at a press conference Monday. “While I will not be providing specifics with respect to what we know to date about the homicide – I can say that this appears to be a break and enter type incident that ended in a violent and disturbing homicide,” said Head, who expressed his condolences to family members like son Tom Feeney and son-in-law Colin Lohrer who sat in the crowd of about 30 people. The investigation has determined that specific items are now missing from the farm such as an Emerson 40 1080 LCD television; five firearms, including a unique rifle described as a Pedersoli/ Cimarron Arms 1874 Sharps 45-70 (an extremely unique weapon with an octagon-shaped barrel and a distinctive firing mechanism and sight); and ammunition reloading equipment (including a distinctive 45 calibre projectile). Police have posted detailed information and images to the provincial RCMP website in hopes of connecting these items with a suspect. “We are also reviewing any other break-ins in the area as we have not been able to eliminate the possibility that there is a connection with the homicide investigation,” added Head. “We therefore ask any local residents to ensure that if you have been the target of an attempted See POLICE, Page 3

The weather did turn out to be the scorcher that was predicted by Environment Canada for Saturday but as the parade made its way down 9th Avenue the skies became clearer and the procession passed Montrose Park the community began to gather for the Beaver Valley community’s 2014 Family Fun Day. The day began with a hike up the Antenna Trail giving residents the opportunity to explore some of the trail upgrades and extensions recently added by the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society, followed by the traditional pancake breakfast at the community hall. The parade featured Montrose Community Service Award recepient, Art Benzer, still looking fresh after completing the Antenna Trail hike, dozens of local children, visiting floats from Fruitvale and Trail, the Canadian Legion, and local sports luminaries including Luke Bertolucci, who won the Memorial Cup with the Edmonton Oil Kings Throughout the day Trail Little League teams battled it out in the park while residents enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs, and drinks from the concession. As a variety of entertainers provided a musical background, kids enjoyed the water park, face painting, and air brush tattoos and had the chance to work off any excess energy in the bug-shaped inflatable slide, and compete in kid’s races and games like the classic three-legged race and balloon toss. Later in the day residents gathered at the hall for a hamburger and steak dinner capping off a perfect example of a small community celebration that was truly a Family Day.

School support staff reach tentative deal By Sheri Regnier Times Staff
Education support staff could have a five-year reprieve from bargaining for wage increases after a tentative contract was reached with the province late last week. Seventeen Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) presidents from across the province met with the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) the bargaining arm for the board of education, hoping to negotiate a new contract for the 34,000 union members. Although details of the agreement won’t be released until after all CUPE presidents reconvene next Monday in Vancouver, the local union leader is feeling hopeful and looking forward to some stability for the 230 members in School District 20 once the deal is ratified this fall. “What I can say is that it is in line with what all the other public sectors have ratified,” said Roger Smith, Local 1285 CUPE president. “I am hoping everyone thinks this is a good deal and it gets ratified throughout the province,” he explained. “I’ve been involved for four years and it seems that for at least 3.5 years of that time, it’s all been bargaining.” The new deal runs through until June 19, but first of all CUPE members must vote on the five-year framework agreement, and Smith said some of the terms have yet to be ironed out. He was referring to the province’s new Economic Stability Mandate that applies to all public
sector employers with unionized employees with collective agreements that expired on or after Dec. 31 last year. The mandate includes two components, a modest wage increase to be negotiated within the government’s budget without creating a deficit or by raising taxes; and growth sharing increases equal to half of any percentage point gain in real GDP growth above predicted GDP gains. “We touched on some of it in a conference call last night,” he noted. “Because a lot of questions have been raised about how this works and is based on GDP predictions,” he continued. “It sort of threw me because do we get half of what is predicted or half of what the growth goes above?” Support staff bargaining began one week ago and over five days, both sides were able to successfully negotiate a five-year deal that secures wages, however outstanding issues such as staffing and job security must be worked out between the local union and school district. “What we agreed upon is a provincial issue,” said Smith. “But every local still has to bargain with their district and we have issues to work out.” CUPE represents education support workers in 59 locals and 53 school districts throughout the province, including: school bus drivers, custodians, clericals, maintenance, tech and trades, education assistants, child and youth care workers and aboriginal education employees.

The mean monthly temperature was 0.4 of a degree warmer than normal while the monthly rainfall was 99 per cent of normal. But there were still a few surprises during the month, which began with a strong upper ridge of high pressure and two days of sunny and unseasonably warm conditions—reaching a record daily maximum temperature of nearly 27 degrees on the second

day of the month. High pressure did briefly return for similarly warm and sunny conditions at times during the remainder of the month, with notably warm days on the 14, 15, 21, 22 and 31. The highest temperature recorded was nearly 29 degrees on May 22, which still didn't compare to a record high of nearly 35 on May 18, 2006. A few Pacific systems also produced several days with showers and thundershowers, with 16 days when measurable rain was recorded.

Victoria Street Corridor Project - Phase II This notice is to inform the public, businesses, residents and tenants on Victoria Street that the City of Trail’s Victoria Street Corridor Project Phase II will be commencing June 9, 2014 with an estimated completion date of August 15, 2014. $7-billion project the go-ahead. But the nod from Ottawa would not be the crest of the mountain Northern Gateway must climb before the oil - and the money - begin to flow. The path to the British Columbia coast has many hurdles left for Calgary-based Enbridge (TSX:ENB) and its partners. A joint review panel of the National Energy Board and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency recommended approval of the project six months ago, subject to 209 conditions. “The bottom line is there are 113 conditions that need to be met before construction can begin. That’s going to take a lot of time,” said company spokesman Ivan Giesbrecht. If approved, that would be merely one more step in an ongoing process, Giesbrecht said. “We have a lot of work to be done before we would be able to begin construction.” There are also the five applications before the Federal Court for judicial review of the federal panel recommendation, and further court challenges are likely. The opposition of environmental groups
was always a given. Expansion of Alberta’s oil sands has become an international target for climate activists. “Approval seems obvious. At the same time, opposition is so strong,” said Nikki Skuce, a resident of Smithers, B.C., and a campaigner for the environmental group Forest Ethics Advocacy. “It’s going to be caught up in the courts for years and it’s going to be ugly on the ground. People are willing to do what it takes.” That is no idle threat in a province that saw a decade-long War in the Woods over logging of old growth forests, which ended with new government regulations. And opposition is not limited to environmentalists and First Nations. Another crippling blow to the project came from the residents of Kitimat - the B.C. city with the most to gain as the pipeline terminus - when they voted to reject the project in a non-binding plebiscite. Kitimat is no stranger to industry, born of an aluminum smelter in the 1950s, but for a majority of those who voted the risks outweigh the rewards. Even the provincial
conditions. Opponents like Art Sterritt, director of Coastal First Nations, have said a tanker spill is possible - even likely - and cannot be cleaned up. His coalition of nine aboriginal communities remains vehemently opposed. The greatest obstacle is the unflagging opposition of First Nations. Hamstrung by the federal government’s failure to negotiate treaties in decades of talks, the company has been left in a legal limbo. The company said the project has 26 aboriginal equity partners and consultations continue but Clarence Innis, acting chief of the Gitxaala Nation on the North Coast, said they haven’t heard from anyone and no talks are planned. “We’re going to do whatever we need to do to protect our territory,” said Innis, whose community is located on an island at the mouth of the Douglas Channel. The Gitxaala are already preparing a legal challenge. “We played by the rules,” Innis said. “We’ve been ignored.” The fight is far from over on either side. There are hundreds of billions of dollars at stake, the company has said.

But the Liberal government may be waiting to see which way the political wind is blowing before they change direction. “There’s a question of whether going along with the approval of the Northern Gateway pipeline will make LNG development in B.C. more challenging by angering First Nations so adamantly opposed to the oil sands pipeline,” said George Hoberg, a professor at the University of British Columbia’s school of forestry and founder of UBCC350, a group pressing for action on greenhouse gas emissions. There is deep resistance in B.C., he said. “I think it’s likely to be approved, but I would not be shocked if it was delayed or even denied,” Hoberg said. Security loosened prior to daring prison escape THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - Security measures for three men who escaped from prison in a helicopter were loosened just a day before their daring getaway, Quebec’s deputy premier said Monday. Lise Theriault said a judge granted a request by the trio on Friday to have more flexible detention conditions, including the possibility they no longer had handcuffs. Theriault, who is also public security minister, told a news conference she doesn’t know why the judge agreed to the request. “On Friday, the prisoners petitioned a judge to have their measures of confinement loosened and the judge agreed,” she said. Yves Denis, Denis Lefebvre and Serge Pomerleau escaped from the Orsainville Detention Centre in suburban Quebec City on Saturday evening when a chopper landed in a courtyard, scooped them up and quickly took off. Police say the three men were originally arrested on drug-trafficking and gangsterism charges in 2010. The Quebec provincial police website also says Denis, 35, is facing first-degree murder charges, while Lefebvre, 53 and Pomerleau, 49, are facing charges of murder and conspiracy to murder. “The No. 1 priority right now is to capture the three fugitives and get them back behind bars,” Theriault said in Nicolet, Que.
‘Ample evidence’ against robocall accused: Crown THE CANADIAN PRESS GUELPH, Ont. - The Crown and Michael Sona’s defence agree that it appears multiple people were involved in the robocalls affair on the morning of the 2011 federal campaign. But while the Crown argues Sona was behind the automated calls that misdirected Liberal voters that day, defence lawyer Norm Boxall says there was no definitive proof presented at trial to convict his client. Closing arguments are being heard in a Guelph, Ont., courtroom Monday at Sona’s election fraud trial. He’s accused of concocting an elaborate plot to autodial 6,700 phone numbers on the morning of the 2011 election with misleading information on where to vote in Guelph. “I think there’s more unanswered questions than answered questions,” said defence lawyer Norm Boxall. Boxall told court his client isn’t required by
law to prove his innocence and the Crown failed to link him to the crime. Crown attorney Croft Michaelson said said there’s “compelling evidence” that Sona used the fake names Pierre Poutine and Pierre Jones to acquire untraceable prepaid credit cards and a disposable phone to cover his tracks.

Gevaudan, 45, originally of the Paris suburb of BoulogneBillancourt, was remembered in his obituary as an advocate of women’s rights who adored his wife and “Twin Flame,” Angela, and stepdaughter Emma. “While he died protecting the lives of the individuals in his community, his spirit
tells us he died as he lived - a happy man,” it says. The obituary for Larche, 40, of Saint John, N.B., says he died while working as a plainclothes officer who “without fear or hesitation ran towards danger to protect his community and family.” He leaves behind his wife Nadine and three daughters and “little princesses” Alexa, Laura and Mia. Ross’s obituary says the 32-yearold dog handler died doing what he loved. He is survived by his wife Rachael and son Austin, with another child expected in the fall. LeBlanc said the deaths of the officers are difficult to fathom. “It’s hard to accept that this is reality,” he said. “It’s hard to find words to describe it.” Justin Bourque, 24, of Moncton is facing three charges of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. \He made a brief appearance in provincial court Friday and he is scheduled to return to court July 3.

Gas: The other pipeline showdown
T
he prospect of piping diluted heavy oil across northern B.C. and loading it in tankers has generated significant genuine protests, as well as bursts of celebrity nonsense, rent-astunts and instant online petitions. Natural gas pipelines and export terminals, on the other hand, are generally accepted by the public. Premier Christy Clark staked her political future on developing liquefied natural gas exports, and pulled off an upset election win that not even Clark expected. Most of the heat she’s taken on that is focused on her extravagant predictions that LNG will pay off the debt and maybe even get rid of our sales tax. But as I predicted 18 months ago, there’s a shift in the target of professional protesters to natural gas. A reminder of that awaited me on a morning walk to the B.C. legisla-
ture during the last week of the May session. At the front gate stood a young woman in a bikini top and shorts, her skin smeared with a dark material, presumably to simulate crude oil. She waved to passing traffic, stretching a banner promoting a website for the “Unist’ot’en camp.” Legislature security intervened to clear the entry walkway before I could ask the protester who was paying her. The fundraising website she was promoting hadn’t been updated since March, but this isn’t the first time this camp has been promoted here. Chevron’s Burnaby oil refinery was also targeted May 30 by protesters who locked themselves to a gate with bicycle locks and chains. They also cited the Unist’ot’en camp and their aim to stop the Pacific Trails pipeline. The camp came to my attention last summer,

when it was promoted by one of Victoria’s chronic anarchist protesters, a woman who goes by the name Zoe Blunt. Blunt and other southern protesters documented their trip north to support the camp’s stated goal, to stop the Pacific Trails gas pipeline, planned to supply the Chevron-Apache liquefied natural gas terminal near Kitimat. The camp is on Crown land near Smithers. It was established at the end of a one-lane bridge by two members of the
Wet’suwet’en First Nation. While that community’s elected council maintains a respectful relationship with the B.C. government, the splinter group that backs the camp has confrontation in mind. The Unist’ot’en website is a jumble of demands and claims that alternates between the Pacific Trails gas pipeline and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal. Like the woman at the legislature, if you want it to be against oil, it’s against oil. A clearer picture of this situation is provided by a relentless blogger named Greg Renouf, who specializes in investigating protesters across Canada. His blog, www.genuinewitty. com, should be required reading for reporters who are presented with slick banners and posturing protesters. Renouf follows the money as well as the familiar faces who pop up at protest after protest. In
April he reported that the increasingly militant Council of Canadians is supporting the Unist’ot’en camp, along with what he describes as “a host of NGOs, unions, militant anarchists and professional protesters.” They include Harsha Walia, who organized violent protests against the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Meanwhile in the real world, TransCanada Corp. announced last week its subsidiary NovaGas Transmission has signed an agreement with Chevron and Apache for a gas pipeline that will connect to Pacific Trails. It’s one of four gas pipelines TransCanada has in development for what is planned to be the biggest industrial investment in B.C. history. They can smear it with oil, but gas is the protest industry’s latest target. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Wal-Mart truck driver from Georgia accused of triggering a crash in New Jersey that critically injured Tracy Morgan and killed another comedian had not slept for more than 24 hours, a criminal complaint said. A court official on Monday said 35-year-old Kevin Roper is scheduled to face an initial court appearance on Wednesday. He has been charged with death by auto and four counts of assault by auto. Authorities said the Jonesboro, Georgia, resident apparently failed to slow for traffic ahead early Saturday in Cranbury Township and swerved at the last minute to avoid a crash. Instead, his big rig smashed into the back of Morgan’s chauffeured Mercedes limo bus, killing comedian James “Jimmy Mack” McNair. The 45-year-old actor and comedian, a former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” cast member, remained in critical condition early Monday.

CLC needs to raise awareness
The scant coverage of the recent Canadian Labour Congress elections in the Trail Times was rather surprising given Trail’s demographics. But then again; perhaps the editorial staff at the Times is well aware of the lack of interest on the part of union members in matters that should concern them. The CLC itself is not entirely faultless in that regard. At the CLC Convention on May 5, the successor as president to local boy Ken Georgetti, Hassan Yussuff, stated: “When labour fails to mobilize its members it will have limited effect on decisions.” But when those ‘decisions’ are actually to be made, come voting time in political elections, it is left to the membership to glean the awareness of what is really going on in the world of politics, from a corporate press. Obviously not the most reliable when it comes to informing working people. And judging by the limited number of subscriptions to an alternative source of information such as the quarterly Canadian Council for Policy Alternatives, it is obvious that a better source of information is needed. Raising political awareness of union members should be made a major task of the CLC. Admittedly not an easy task given our addiction to circuses
and celebrities. So obviously not in the form of submissions to the popular press, where little Prince George demands the limelight, but possibly in the form of a monthly newsletter handed out to union members on a wide range of topics. Without corporate control the real stories can be told in a more unorthodox fashion that may be more effective in mobilizing the membership. When given a clear explanation of the intended function of the Bank of Canada for example, and how the bank really operates, we might no longer ignore politicians the likes of Mel Hurtig, who more than 20 years ago, already recognized the need to re-structure the Bank of Canada. And when considering the growing income inequality it might help to put things into proper perspective by pointing out that other than possibly the odd one in the construction of ever bigger, ever more palatial bank buildings, no working man ever dies in banks, no, they die in coalmines, by the hundreds. And it is the executives of private banks that go home with the biggest rewards in the form of salaries and bonuses while these banks don’t add a cent to the nation’s wealth. Until the financial collapse in 2008, we might have seen these outrageous rewards as possibly justified, believing
them to be financial wizards, but, to our cost, they proved to be nothing but gamblers. There is an urgent need to bring awareness of the real world to the rank and file. Some kind of alarm bell is needed, but don’t expect the real power brokers to ring it. For the past few decades we’ve not been short of bread, but the slices are getting thinner and those we elected to government make sure we remain hooked on the circuses. It also wouldn’t hurt to point out that greed is not just a privilege of the rich, we too can be guilty of that, for is it not an illusory luxury when contemplating adding a thousand dollar chrome package to the new pick-up truck without a thought about the world we leave our kids? Footnote: At the 2011 CLC convention major changes were made where regional Labour Councils were pretty well side-lined in voting for a new CLC executive. These are pure Harper tactics with no other purpose than to consolidate the formation and longterm duration of the sitting executive. These changes will no doubt lead to alienation between the rank and file and the CLC and will ultimately result in the demise of the CLC as such. Peter van Iersel Fruitvale
Well, another exciting year in SOBC-Trail is coming to a close and what a year it has been. We have seen an increase in the number of athletes, traveled to all areas of the southern parts of B.C., sent a record number of athletes to Summer Games and will do so again in 2015 for the Winter Games in Kamloops February. This all cannot happen without having a stellar group of volunteers, parents, caregivers and coaches. Our local community has embraced Special Olympics like never before. Joining our athletes in competition, in celebration and by supporting us through our very successful sponsorship program. As you may or may not know it takes an incredible amount of funding to provide safe, quality equipment as well as sup-
porting our transportation to events. SOBC-Trail has traveled to Kelowna for swimming, Abbottsford for floor hockey, Cranbrook for bowling, Oliver for bocce, Kelowna again for alpine skiing and snowshoeing, Vancouver for floor hockey, Cranbrook for swimming, Nelson for bocce, Grand Forks for floor hockey, and our athletes continue to travel and train for this years’ upcoming national Summer Games this July in Vancouver July 7-12. For this we say Thank You to all of the local businesses and organizations that Support Special Olympics here in Trail. You truly have embraced the essence of Special Olympics. The next group I would like to acknowledge is our hard working, and progressive thinking local executive. Countless of sometimes
thankless hours of dedication go into running our group all while treating all of our athletes with dignity and respect. The smiles that have been put on our athletes’ faces is remarkable. I can honestly say that we here in Trail have really raised the bar as far as athlete participation, community support and provincial profile. Lastly I would like to say it has been an incredible experience having been the local coordinator this past year and I can’t think of anything else that I would have rather been doing. Scholarship fund underway
OBITUARIES GARRETT, CHRIS – With great sadness, the family of Chris Garrett announces the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandma and greatgrandma who left us Friday, May 23, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Chris leaves behind her husband, Lorne Garrett, son Larry (Sue) and daughter Elaine, Grandchildren Darcy, Corey, Nicholas, and Kaitlin and great grandson Wyatt. Survived also by her sisters Del Frederick (Ed), Tammy Moore (Howard), and brothers Ron Graham (Heather) and Ed Coupland (Jane) and many nieces and nephews, as well as a large extended family. She was predeceased
by her brother Wayne Edlund. Chris was born in Calgary in 1942 and spent her childhood in the Golden area. After her marriage in 1960, she and Lorne moved to the Trail area where they raised their children, spent their working lives and then semi-retired to Christina Lake. Until her illness restricted her activities, Chris was involved with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Kidney Foundation, BEAKs and the SPCA. She enjoyed her gardening, taking in strays (dogs, cats, turkeys, peacocks, a chipmunk and even a lizard) and spending time with family and friends. Memorial will be held at the house Saturday July 19, 2014. 1:00pm at 1589 Neimi Road, Christina Lake. In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris’s memory can be made to BC SPCA.

If given a choice, his mother Natalie Handley would like to see the bench placed in the Trail Memorial Centre because “his passion and his heart were definitely in hockey” but he was also an avid baseball player, golfer and fisherman who frequented the Trail Aquatic and Leisure Centre daily. Natalie is amazed at the efforts of his class and is feeling very overwhelmed by just how many lives her son touched. “I don’t know if there is ever going to be real closure on it,” she said. “But it’s really great to see the kids and that they are such a tribute to him. It’s amazing the things they’ve done.” Beyond the fundraising underway, the teens have built a hut down at Nolan’s favourite

Nolan Handley’s life was celebrated late last month when family and friends gathered at his favourite fishing hole for a candlelight vigil. fishing hole, where his friends and family visit regularly and most recently held a candlelight vigil. Nolan will be recognized this weekend during grad festivities when “In Memory of Nolan Handley” will accompany his baby and grad picture during a
slideshow. He will also live on under a new Crowe scholarship. Those wishing to honour his name, may contribute to the (Nolan Handley) trust account that can be accessed at any Kootenay Savings Credit Union branch. “It hasn’t been the same for a lot of the students,” said Grade 12 student Eric Gonzalez. “People have been dealing with it differently but overall it’s been tough, I guess for some kids more than others. “I can’t explain Nolan in a couple words.” he added. “He was trouble maker, in a good way, who really valued his friends and lived his life to the fullest.” Through these efforts, his friends have found some closure and a chance to say goodbye. They will do just that this weekend when they toss their grad cap in the air or raise a glass in his honour.

McKay top qualifier for junior and men’s provincials By Times Staff Tyler McKay completed West Kootenay golf’s equivalent of a double play on the weekend as he claimed top spot in a pair of qualifying events. The Redstone and Birchbank courses hosted golfers from throughout the zone for qualifying events for the B.C. Amateur, B.C. Junior and B.C. Summer Games slated for later this summer. McKay’s rounds of 71, Saturday at Redstone, and 75, Sunday at Birchbank, gave him a two-day total of 146, tops of any golfer over the two days. That was one stroke less than Karson O’Keefe’s total of 147 in the amateur qualifier. O’Keefe, from Creston, posted the top score last year in the event. Rounding out the top four qualifiers for the men’s amateur, slated for July 15-18 at the Seymour club in North Vancouver, are Birchbank’s Braden McKay (148) and Hanno Southam of Granite Pointe in Nelson (157). Kevin Bennet of Redstone is the first alternate. Tyler McKay’s 146 total was also tops among qualifiers for the B.C. junior men’s championship, which goes July 8-11 at the Meadow Gardens club See GAMES, Page 12

Trail squads split home-opening doubleheaders
By Times Staff Trail’s American Legion teams couldn’t double up on their success as both the Single A and Double A teams hosted their first games of regular season at Butler Park. While both clubs started strong with opening game victories in their respective double headers, their American counterparts proved that any game could change with one timely inning leaving both Trail teams with weekend splits in their first action on home turf. As with most early-season action, the weekend games were decided by big innings, costly errors and/or pitching. However, it was a perfectly executed squeeze play that allowed Spokane’s East Valley to squeak out a tight 9-6 win in the finale with the Double-A Orioles on Sunday. Trail, which had its scheduled Saturday doubleheader against Cheney cancelled, held the hammer after they scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings to hold off East Valley 6-3 in the opening game of the Sunday twin bill. Brendan McKay went 3-for-3 with two runs scored while Austin Tambellini chalked up the win on the mound. It appeared to be more of the same in the second game as Tambellini’s third-inning double

ignited a five-run inning and spotted Trail a 5-2 lead. But in the top of the sixth East Valley strung together a series of solid hits and used smart base running to score four runs and turn a three-run deficit into a 6-5 lead. The seesaw battle continued in the bottom of the sixth when Trail loaded the bases. However, it took Nathan Soukeroff’s alert slide into first to foil a double play that allowed the Orioles to score the game-tying run. Trail went on to load the bases again but couldn’t bring the go-ahead run home. In the top of the seventh, East Valley then tapped in to a play that’s usually reserved for well-seasoned teams, not for clubs playing in only their third game of the season. With runners on second and third, East Valley’s Alex Josquin executed a perfect squeeze bunt as Mike Jensen broke for home. It worked so well East Valley scored on the bunt and also on the subsequent overthrow at first. Josquin would eventually come around to score to cap a three-run inning that vaulted East Valley into a 9-6 lead they carried to the end to leave Canada with a win and a loss. Meanwhile, Friday night, the Single-A Orioles took their first turn at Butler Park and rode a er who spent the last three seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League playing with the Lloydminster Bobcats, Drumheller Dragons and Olds Grizzlys.

The Orioles capitalized on five walks and added four hits during the big outburst. Hall picked up the win on the mound while Brendan Volcanno scored two runs. Things looked good for a sweep of the Washington team as Trail took a 7-4 lead into the seventh inning before errors and timely hits sparked a four-run Chewelah rally and lifted them to an 8-7 win in the second half of the doubleheader. The late comeback spoiled a couple of good performances at the plate by Volcanno and Hall. Volcanno had a perfect game at the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Hall also scored three times and went 2-for-3. “We hit really well and our pitchers threw strikes but we had some untimely errors,” said manager Darren Miracle. He added the players were happy to get playing on their home field, especially under the lights on Friday. The team gets another chance to perform on home turf this weekend when they host the powerful Mead squad for a pair of games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Owner apologizes THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn apologized Monday for his bitter remarks after his horse failed to win the Triple Crown. Coburn said on ABC’s “Good Morning America” he was “very ashamed of myself. Very ashamed. I need to apologize to a lot of people.” On Saturday, he had said that Tonalist took “the coward’s way out” by skipping the first two legs of the Triple Crown. California Chrome, General a Rod and Ride On Curlin were the only horses to run in all three. General a Rod finished seventh in the Belmont and Ride On Curlin did not finish. THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - As Winnipeg magician Darcy Oake dangled upside-down and wriggled to escape a hinged trap with spikes that threatened to impale him, the audience members and judges of Saturday’s finale of “Britain’s Got Talent” were on the edge of their seats. Oake, 26, debuted on the variety show contest with a dazzling display of slight-of-hand tricks with doves, which wowed even notoriously blunt judge Simon Cowell. However Saturday’s performance, where Oake competed 10 other variety acts, was a lot more risky and had to be completed under the pressure of a burning piece of cord, which was all that held the trap’s arms from closing on him. Oake escaped and survived. But when the British television audience voted, Oake wasn’t in the running and the top prize of 250,000 British pounds (about C$456,000) went to Collabro, a musical theatre group. “Win or lose. This has been the most amazing experience of my life,” the magician tweeted just moments after his performance. The routine was called “The Jaws of Death.” The audience weren’t the only ones holding their breath as the cord burned thinner and thinner. Oake’s father, “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcaster Scott Oake, followed up-tothe minute social media updates of how the act was going while riding a bus to Staples Centre in Los Angeles to cover Game 2 of the NHL Stanley Cup final. Oake’s mother followed the happenings at the family’s cottage in Manitoba. “I’ve seen him do that routine before, but it never fails to create a sense of anxiety,” Scott Oake said, speaking by cellphone from the bus. “He’s skilled enough that he can do it successfully each time,” he added. “We honestly never expect that he’s going to get killed.” Cowell told Oake on an earlier appearance of “Britain’s Got Talent” that he’s “the best magician” they’ve ever had on the show, called him a “star” and praised him for presenting magic in a non-corny way. A YouTube clip of the performance with the doves has garnered over 25 million views.

Small movie thumps big budget release THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - In a box-office battle that pitted young versus old, female against male, modest drama verse big-budget spectacle, the teenage romance “The Fault in Our Stars” easily bested the time-shifting Tom Cruise action film “Edge of Tomorrow.” With a $48.2 million domestic debut, “The Fault in Our Stars” thumped the $29.1 million opening for “Edge of Tomorrow,” according to studio estimates Sunday. It did so with a far less seasoned star in Shailene Woodley and a $12 million budget a fraction the size of that for “Edge of Tomorrow,” made for approximately $175 million. The results offered a stark illustration of shifting box-office trends. Whereas big-budget, male-oriented action films with stars like Cruise have long ruled the day at North American multiplexes, those movies are increasingly under siege from films ignited by passionate young female moviegoers. “The notion of what is traditional summer fare is changing,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. “Women and young girls are as vitally important to the box office in the summer as the young males, who Hollywood has courted and coveted for decades.” “The Fault in Our Stars,” a highly-anticipated adaptation of John Green’s bestselling book, was in some ways another example of the power of young-adult fiction. But unlike “Twilight” or “The Hunger Games,” ”The Fault in Our Stars“ isn’t about sci-fi or fantasy, but is rather a more naturalistic drama about young love and cancer. Twentieth Century Fox said that an overwhelming 82 per cent of the audience for the film was female, an unusually large gender gap for such a popular movie. The majority of the audience eagerly turned out for Thursday night and Friday showings. Disney’s fairy tale “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie - slid to second place in its second week with $33.5 million. With a two-week global sum of $335.5 million, “Maleficent” has performed well, but it remains to be seen if it can be a real money-maker for Disney, which spent an estimated $180 million to make it, plus huge amounts to market it.

I respect her feelings, but I don’t understand why she cannot forgive Beth knowing how ill she was. Beth is expecting her second child, but I didn’t tell Gina, because I thought she wouldn’t care. Her grandmother spilled the beans, and now Gina thinks Beth was deliberately “getting even” because Gina didn’t invite Beth to her wedding. I feel like such a failure. I am not getting any younger and
The cemetery has a sign saying no dogs are allowed. On a holiday like Memorial Day, the groundskeepers aren’t there to say anything. I gave them a stern look, as I certainly didn’t want their dogs to relieve themselves on my relative’s grave. They just looked at me and laughed. This undoubtedly will happen again. How can I deal with it without losing my cool? I find this disrespectful and disgusting. -Anywhere USA Dear USA: Those cemeteries that do not permit dogs will post a sign, as yours did. Those who bring their dogs in spite of these signs are trespassing and should be reported to the cemetery owners, as well as the police. In cemeteries where dogs are allowed, considerate owners will not permit their animals to relieve themselves on a grave, but will direct them to other areas within the
cemetery and will clean up after them. Dear Annie: I would like to respond to “Different Gods,” the Pagan who doesn’t want to attend church with her boyfriend’s family at Christmas. I have been a practicing pagan for 30
years. Though I am devoted to my religion, I am still able to celebrate with family and friends. Holidays are about the season, the sharing and the joy in being alive. “Different Gods” should embrace the holidays as a way to show her love for

Dear Annie: Last Memorial Day, I visited the grave of a relative to pay my respects. I looked up and saw a group of people walking by with their dogs -- right over the graves.

Dear Annie: I have two adult daughters, both married now. “Beth” lives nearby, but “Gina” moved across the country. Beth was diagnosed with ADHD and bipolar disorder when she was in her early 20s. I think she suffered from it during childhood, but was undiagnosed. When they were children, I spent a great deal of time trying to calm Beth down and was aware that Gina did not get the same degree of attention. I tried to make up for it by doing things with Gina outside of the house. I became her Brownie troop leader and went on her class field trips. I made it my business to see that we had calm times together. Now that Beth is on medication, she is a different person. But it may be too late. Gina doesn’t want to come home anymore because she says she doesn’t feel safe here. Gina tells me that she is being treated
