Floating waterpark proposal gets green light

Every Kelowna oldtimer knows that the waters off City Park used to be bustling with activity in the era of the Aquatic Centre. Now a new generation will get their fill of the same kind of excitement—but with a modern twist. A company called Kelowna Wibut entered a three-year agreement with the city Monday allowing it to lease a portion of the lake for a floating aquatic park. And if all goes according to plan, it should be up and running as early as the first weekend in July. John Saufferer, with the city’s property management branch, told council the park is non-motorized, and consists of a series of inflatable, interlocking pieces that will take up a 30-by40-metre space on the lake. It’s similar to something from the game show Wipe Out, he explained, noting that, as seen on the program, the aqua park’s users will get on the floating obstacle course and do what they can to stay on it. It was an idea well received by council. “People climb up, maybe fall down? I think
it’s a great idea. I really like it,” said Coun. Robert Hobson, Monday after the proposal was floated out. Other than the chill of the water in that particular spot, Hobson said that he couldn’t see any downside to the project, as it’s non-motorized and can easily be removed when the time comes. Coun. Colin Basran said he liked the fact that the aquatic park would fill the gap left by Flintstone Park or the watersides. Like the latter of those attractions, the aqua-park is really geared toward those between the ages of 10 and 20, although it’s a bit pricier. The cost is pegged at $25 per person for a day’s worth of splashing about. The aqua park will also be the first of its kind in Western Canada, although Harrison has something very similar. It may be a novelty, but Coun. Luke Stack pointed out that there are parallels to what preceded it a generation ago. “What I couldn’t help but notice is that it’s right next to the former Aquatic…It’s a 21st century aquatic playground where we used to have the old one,” he said. With a glint in his eye, one can see Matt Gomez’s heart start racing as he pitches his young company Soil Mate (soilmate. com). The tech startup is a well-crafted farm-totable social networking site pairing consumers with the farmers, farmers’ markets and wineries they need to be able to eat and drink local, and farmers with the technology and marketing expertise to compete in a world geared to industrial monoculture. “This is a small team that’s full of heart and cares about the mission
more than the business,” said Gomez, who launches a cross-continent introduction to farmers and shoppers this month. Within the next year, he expects to have more than 30,000 farmers signed to the site, to outpace his only competition, and within two to three years see large enough profits to buy up farmland all over North America for Soil Mate farms capable of helping young farmers get a start or neighbourhoods establish community gardens so everyone can grow food. Heart is at the centre of Gomez’s business and he fully admits agriculture and food is a passion, not
an expertise. He was raised in Luton, England—it tops the Crap Towns to live in the U.K. list by popular vote—and his knowledge of food systems boiled down to buy-one-get-one free at the supermarket. Nevertheless, he succeeded young and was running an airport ten times the size of Kelowna’s before his 25th birthday. Then, his best friend died following heart surgery and Gomez realized he needed to find his passion and took to exploring the world. “Pretty much everybody around the world— in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina—once you’re out-

side the city, everything is based around the market,” he said. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but this was a big discovery for me.” He met his wife and moved to Kelowna. Learned about genetically modified food, pesticides and the distance food travels to our plates as he adjusted to his new agriculturally-focused home. By the time his children arrived, the seed was planted; it was time to find good locally grown food. “What we found was there wasn’t any convenient way to find some very basic information: who grows what, how they do it, when it’s available and how to buy it,” he said.
Soil Mate grew organically. Gomez was working in a very successful web design company, Acro Media, and quickly devised a game plan: connect farmers to consumers, and consumers to farmers. He hired Acro to build the responsible site of his dreams. “We’ve leverage all the best available parts of every other type of online system to work for farmers for free because we appreciate the work they do and we want to be able to help them to build a sustainable system for our

New Rails With Trails section connects 30 km city trail loop

Kelowna residents can now walk, run or ride on a new 30 kilometre trail that loops around the city after phase two of Kelowna’s rails with trails program was officially opened as part of National Health and Fitness Day Saturday at Parkinson Rec. Centre in Kelowna. The new, 1.5 kilometre stretch of trail extends phase 1 of the project, which ended near the corner of Spall and Clement, and connects it to the Dilworth area to create a 29.9 kilometre loop around Kelowna. The new trail will allow residents to connect to the Mission Greenway down to Casorso Road, up Lakeshore and back into the downtown core. Canadian ski racing legend Nancy GreeneRaine, voted the Canadian athlete of the 20th century and now a Canadian sen-
ator, was on hand to open the new trail. “This new section of Kelowna’s Rails with Trails multi-use path is a great addition to the region’s active transportation network, which residents and visitors will be able to enjoy for years to come,” said GreenRaine, who before retiring from ski racing at the age of 24, won two Olympic medals and 13 World Cup victories on the slopes. “This rail’s with trails (program) is an extension of your community’s spirit” In officially opening the pathway, Kelowna mayor Walter Gray said the trail links employment hubs such as downtown and the Landmark buildings to where people live. It also connects neighbourhoods and town centres to many of the city’s recreational amenities. Gray said it also opens the door for future phases of the project that will in-
clude a pathway that connects Kelowna’s downtown and cultural district to the University of British Columbia Okanagan, Kelowna International Airport and beyond. The federal government is providing $1.46 million through the federal Gas Tax Fund for the trail, and the Government of British Columbia is providing $1.52 million through BikeBC toward the nearly $3 million infrastructure project.

A service for the three Mounties shot dead in the line of duty last week in Moncton, New Brunswick will be held this morning in Kelowna. At 8:45 a.m, Trinity Baptist Church will open its doors to the community, so they too can mourn Constables Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, Douglas James Larche and Dave Joseph Ross. Sgt. Ann Morrison said the service would include a few short speeches and the funeral in Moncton will be live-streamed. “This is a public event and an opportunity for us to come together and acknowledge the sacrifice of our fallen members,” she said.
Members of the Kelowna detachment are already en route to Moncton to be present for the funeral. The city of Moncton has announced that some 5,000 to 7,000 police officers will be present for the ceremony. “Although we have a large country to police, all of our members go through training academy together, so we’re connected,” explained Morrison. “I can’t confirm that we have anyone in the Kelowna detachment who was personally connected to the fallen officers, but we are closely tied together as a brotherhood.” Regardless of the location of their posting, Mounties face similar realities each day, so this kind of attack cuts to the
quick. “It’s devastating. This affects the policing community and it affects our families,” she said. “To have something this tragic happen again in Canada is devastating.” Kelowna city council wrote a letter of support to local Mounties and presented it Monday. “It’s a sobering reminder that our police officers do dangerous work and put themselves at risk every day to maintain the law,” said Mayor Walter Gray during Monday’s meeting. “This period of grieving will be difficult… and we want Kelowna (RCMP) members to know that we support your hard work.” Flags around the city will be flown at half-mast
on the day of the funeral. Gevaudan, Larche and Ross were gunned down last Wednesday evening after responding to a report of a man with firearms in a residential neighbourhood in the northwest area of Moncton. In addition to the fatalities, Constables Eric Dubois and Darlene Goguen, were wounded and have been released from hospital. The shootings and the ensuing 30-hour manhunt for the alleged killer brought the city to a standstill until an arrest was made just after midnight Friday. The Kelowna church where the local service will be held is located at 1905 Springfield Road, and can hold up to 1,900.

food,” he said. The site allows farmers to blog, put up photo galleries, feed in social media and basically use it to replace a website. Once it gets up and running, farmers will have access to the data it produces for free. Social media sites are selling big data to help companies target-market, hone their brands and access consumers like never before, and Gomez sees no reason why the data on his site can’t do the same for farmers. “If Soil Mate is successful, we’ll be able to advise people who are currently in agriculture on trends …and if you’re someone who wants to get into farming, we’ll be able to help with the business plan,” he said. By knowing when kale has taken a downturn and Swiss chard is trending, producers will know what to plant. The information the site generates should indicate which products people tend to care are organic. And things like what products consumers looking for lo-
cal peas are likely to want to purchase with the peas should be apparent. Within a week, Soil Mate will begin pre-seeding, asking consumers to sign on, even if there isn’t a farm registered in their area, so Gomez and his employee, Drew Vincent, can start finding farms in that customer’s area, and farmers to get connected to start marketing their wares. “Our logo is a heartshaped beet because we see food and food security as the heartbeat of the community,” said Gomez. The Okanagan is his ground zero community. From Jordan Marr, a local organic grower, to Alan Gatzke of Gatzke Orchards, he’s used the Central Okanagan farmers to provide guidance. Jennifer Schell, a farm-to-table columnist for this paper, is doing blog posts and he used the same farmer’s market consultant, Vance Corum, as the Kelowna Farmers’ Market. It means the world will soon be able to see that Jeff Rickets, an organic farmer on Gor-
don Drive, produces the next best thing to locally grown quinoa: amaranth. “It’s not really in theT amounts that I could real-G ly get peoples attention and provide all of whate they need, but I’m work-b ing on it,” he said. s Ricketts told Gomez he doesn’t have a tonb of time so he needs Soilb Mate to be quick, simple and easy to use. “Simple was really the key ingredient for me,” he said, noting he’s working on adding his inventory to the Soil Mate site. Another opportunity to drink the fruits of this valley may be around the corner. Kelowna city council threw its support be-
hind an application destined for the Agricultural Land Commission Monday from Blair and Kelly Wilson. If the Wilsons get the go-ahead from the ALC, they intend to create an apple vodka distillery and tasting room on their Wallace Hill Road property. The size of the tasting room would be roughly 125-square-metres and would showcase the centre of the operation. The alcohol-making still would be approximately 12-feet high, and visible to the tasting room from behind a glass wall. The whole project would be slotted in with the RV camp sites already on the property. “I read this applica-
tion with a lot of interest, not because I’m a vodka drinker, but because I’ve never heard of apple vodka,” said Coun. Mohini Singh, during the Monday meeting. Regardless, Singh said that she believes a value-added agricultural product is a welcome addition to the local treefruit industry. Mayor Walter Gray pointed out that it’s not the first time that apple growers have tried to make something more drinkable from their apples. Pasquale “Cap” Capozzi, and WAC Bennet made apple wine at Calona Vineyards, once upon a time. It wasn’t a critical success, but did lead to the creation of apple cider.

There is as much beauty in a black mondo grass as a feisty fuchsiatinged azalea, once your eyes adjust. As the owner of Hampton Landscaping, it’s been Tim Valerioti’s job for the last decade to shepherd coastal garden lover’s addiction to verdant expanse toward the wonders of semi-arid xeriscape landscaping. “People get the impression we’ll cover everything in rock, but you still get nice bright, colourful plants, it just doesn’t take a lot of water,” he said. “Xeriscaping is not really a setin-stone religion; it’s more of a guideline.” Explaining and adapting has been a big part of developing The Hampton Group, a trilogy of companies capable of building a backyard pool, designing and executing the landscaping and, now, supplying the plants through its new xeriscape nursery on Benvoulin Road. Valerioti quickly discovered he needed an idea space where customers could not only

been a daunting negotiation with city council. But the misstep proved fortuitous, ultimately helping him expand across the street and develop a niche in water conservation. “There are a number of nurseries in the immediate vicinity, so we knew we had to do something different,” said Valerioti. “…And what the city is trying to promote is a water-conscious plants and landscaping style, so we said, okay that’s our focus.” Hampton Nurseries opened last spring and is growing its stock and cus-
tomer base, inching toward further toward Valerioti’s vision. He came to Kelowna by way of Vancouver, where he worked in business development, primarily for software companies. When it was time to start a family, the Okanagan seemed the ideal location to return to his roots and get his hands back in the dirt. With two degrees, one in business and one in urban planning and accounting, Valerioti had paid the bills through school with a small landscape company and he missed the sense of pride it instilled. “I’m very creative and that’s something I waited to be able to do. At the end of the day, I wanted to have something to show for my work,” he said. Knowing the lay of the land, he was quick to expand from a lawn-mowing operation to a design firm, and credits K West Homes for giving him his first landscaping contract. He now has two horticulturalists on staff, a pool expert, staff to run the nursery and part-time workers to help out at night. The mission: low water usage in everything

Szostak told the 2014 graduating class at UBC’s Okanagan campus convocation on Friday they should challenge accepted conventions, prejudices and preconceptions. “If there is one lesson I hope you’ve learned it is the necessity to question the received wisdom of the time,” said Szostak. “Whether they are ideas put forth by peers, professors, parents or the gatekeepers of society, university graduates need to continue along the path of questioning accepted knowledge to make new discoveries.” He said the students are not going to be ready for an unpredictable future or ready to change the world unless they ask the hard questions. “And be ready to question yourself as well,” he added. “Scrap your favourite ideas.” When Szostak was researching his project that led to the Nobel Prize, he had to face the reality that his preconceived knowledge did not pass muster. “I proved to be

wrong,” he said of his preliminary work. Only when Szostak threw out his own ideas and started over, did he find success. Graduates need to challenge themselves in the same way throughout life, Szostak said. Szostak received the 2009 Nobel Prize for physiology of medicine, along with research colleagues Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider. He is the Alex Rich Distinguished Investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, a professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Harvard University. He is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and a graduate of Montreal’s McGill University who holds a PhD from Cornell University. Szostak’s honorary doctorate was awarded at the fifth of six convocation ceremonies over two days, as UBC conferred a total of 1,585 degrees to undergraduate, master,

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died after a motor vehicle incident near Vernon on June 4. Brian Victor Dolman, 64, of Oyama, was the driver and sole occupant of an SUV that was travelling south on Highway 97 around 2:30 p.m. when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a northbound pickup truck near the intersection with Westridge Road. Dolman died at the scene. The BC Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Services continue to investigate this crash.

City bracing for a busy summer
K
elowna, get ready to get busy. With summer here in spirit—if not officially according to the calendar—not only is the city and surrounding area about to extend its magnetic attraction to tourists from all over, it is also set to see its weekends filled with events. For locals who grumble about how busy the city is getting, it’s a problem that many other municipalities in this country would love to have. Here, popularity has equalled
growth for many years and that has meant more municipal services and amenities for the growing population. And many of those amenities—parks, trails, recreational facilities, host the events that keep this area hopping at this time of year. Scattered throughout the city, especially on summer weekends when the weather here can generally be counted on to be sunny and warm—with the exception of early June when it is normally a little less than ideal—this city comes alive.
From now until well after Labour Day, you can expect to hear about something happening just about every weekend. Festivals, events, concerts, fundraising efforts and an assortment of other gatherings give a vitality to the city, especially its downtown, and that helps bring Kelowna to life at a time that best exposes it to those who visit. There may be more competition for the travellers’ dollar now but the Okanagan remains a fairly easy sell, especially for
families looking to take a holiday and get here by car, truck or recreational vehicle. So, expect traffic to get heavier on the main routes and expect to see lots of out-of-province licence plates because the tourists are coming, just as they do every year. And it’s thanks in large part to that tourism that those of us who live here get to experience the many events that aim to hold our attention during the upcoming months we simply know as summer in the Okanagan.

Natural gas: The other pipeline showdown in B.C. T
he prospect of piping diluted heavy oil across northern B.C. and loading it in tankers has generated significant genuine protests, as well as bursts of celebrity nonsense, rent-astunts and instant online petitions. Natural gas pipelines and export terminals, on the other hand, are generally accepted by the public. Premier Christy Clark staked her political future on developing liquefied natural gas exports, and pulled off an upset election win that not even Clark expected.
Most of the heat she’s taken on that is focused on her extravagant predictions that LNG will pay off the debt and maybe even get rid Tom of our sales tax. But as I preFletcher dicted 18 months ago, there’s a shift in the target of professional protesters to natural gas. A reminder of that awaited me on a morning walk to the B.C. legislature during the last week of the May session. At the front gate stood a young woman in a bikini top and shorts, her

skin smeared with a dark material, presumably to simulate crude oil. She waved to passing traffic, stretching a banner promoting a website for the “Unist’ot’en camp.” Legislature security intervened to clear the entry walkway before I could ask the protester who was paying her. The fundraising website she was promoting hadn’t been updated since March, but this isn’t the first time this camp has been promoted here. Chevron’s Burnaby oil refinery was also targeted May 30 by protesters who locked themselves to a gate with bicycle locks and chains. They also cited the Unist’ot’en camp and
their aim to stop the Pacific Trails pipeline. The camp came to my attention last summer, when it was promoted by one of Victoria’s chronic anarchist protesters, a woman who goes by the name Zoe Blunt. Blunt and other southern protesters documented their trip north to support the camp’s stated goal, to stop the Pacific Trails gas pipeline, planned to supply the Chevron-Apache liquefied natural gas terminal near Kitimat. The camp is on Crown land near Smithers. It was established at the end of a one-lane bridge by two members of the Wet’suwet’en First Nation. While that community’s elect-
ed council maintains a respectful relationship with the B.C. government, the splinter group that backs the camp has confrontation in mind. The Unist’ot’en website is a jumble of demands and claims that alternates between the Pacific Trails gas pipeline and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway proposal. . A clearer picture of this situation is provided by a relentless blogger named Greg Renouf, who specializes in investigating protesters across Canada. His blog, www.genuinewitty. com, should be required reading for

Find a new way to settle union contracts To the editor: I am so sick of this whole (teacher) strike/ lockout situation. I am a mother of four children—Grades 10, 8, 3, and kindergarten. I have great respect for teachers, most of them are caring individuals whom I entrust with my children every day. They have gone through, I believe, a minimum of four years post-secondary education. They work a day job that has hours of work that fit pretty well for family life. I, on the other hand, work shift work. And I do
not have a lot of regularity in my life because of it. I have a Grade 12 education but nothing more. Because of this, I encourage my kids to get a good education so they can have a good job and a good future. I would never want them to be a teacher. Teachers have an education that got them a career teaching and inspiring our kids who are our future, but they are constantly being told they are not worth it, they are overpaid and they should do more. They have to fight for
respect from their employer and are often told: “Sorry, do more with less.” Although I support teachers in their bid to get better class composition and better pay, (B.C. is one of the lowest paying provinces for teachers wages), they should not be discussing the issues with the kids in the classroom. My 16-year-old daughter has missed the same block of classes on the last two days of the strike, and will now be missing a third block of
the same classes, one of which is her science 10 class, leading up to her provincial exam. How is this helping her, or the teachers cause? You would think the union that is planning these strikes would be considering the least harm to the students but they are obviously are not. The only ones suffering from this situation are the students, parents and teachers. The strike is only beneficial to the B.C. government. It is saving money on the wages not being paid, as
well as the gaining of support from frustrated parents. The teachers contract was up almost a year ago. This should have been settled long ago, ideally before their previous contract expired. Our government is doing a really poor job at managing its contracts and resources to deal with this situation a year overdue. A new way of handling these contract negotiations needs to be found. Premier is holding ‘public education hostage’ Open letter to Christy Clark: I do not have enough time to do my job. I am a secondary school foods 10/11/12 teacher, an advanced placement co-ordinator and the grad co-ordinator for a grad class of 550 students. For the second time in three years, in addition to teaching my classes, I am faced with organizing grad commencement ceremonies (yes, we hold two consecutively as our grad class is so large) without the assistance of teachers. While your government has stated that teachers may volunteer for anything they wish to, one would have to be a martyr to have 10 per cent of his/her working time and salary re-
duced and then contentedly set off to volunteer for work-related events. While anyone actively involved in public education understands the challenges and pressures faced year-end in a year exempt from political strife, the additional time constraints that your government has now placed upon teachers at such a significant period in the school year serve only to severely burden our administration and to lessen the ability of teachers to perform their jobs thoroughly and to completion. Each of these consequences of your actions impacts the achievements and education of our students. These type of governmental decisions further exemplify that the ministry representing education is thoroughly
out of touch with it. I fail to understand how anyone whose parent was an educator could so drastically and deliberately hold public education hostage. It seems a very great risk to take in the true serving of education—the right of each child in this province. ‘With vigilance,’ harm to ALC Act can be limited To the editor: Re: Farmland Fate A Test For Parties, June 3 www.kelownacapnews.com Opinion. For columnist Tom Fletcher, a fan of the recent ALR bill, only “a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land” might make the concerns about it “at least partially true.” Short of the flood, it seems any bad effect from the weakened Agricultural Land Commission Act is nothing. Fortunately, the bill spurred wide pro-
ALR action. The efforts to stop “the bill to kill the ALR” (at least for consultation) were also a means to boost the critical mass of aware citizens for the next stage, which is now. Awareness matters. We saw that in Richmond a few years ago when a fellow who publicly wanted a high-profile property out of the ALR almost got onto the Agricultural Land Commission panel to decide on it. Of course, the ALC is a tribunal and, like a court, it is meant to start with evidence, not decisions.
Until the recent bill kneecapped the commission, current chairman Richard Bullock was modernizing the ALC for quality assurance and efficiency, minimizing mistakes. Flag football is flourishing in B.C.

When Joe Gluska helped bring the B.C. flag football championships to Kelowna for the first time in 2008, 24 teams took to the field. Six years later, the president of the B.C. Community Football Association couldn’t be more encouraged by the rapid rise in popularity the sport has experienced, both in Kelowna and across the province. This past weekend, a record 126 teams—up from 90 teams last year— and more than 1,200 athletes from the U10 to U19 age divisions converged on the Mission sports fields for the provincial playdowns. Gluska said with the facilities, the atmosphere and the Okanagan weather, Kelowna is an ideal setting for the annual tournament. “It’s been fantastic because in the seven times we’ve been here, we’ve only had one half day of rain, so that’s really been working in our favour,” laughed Gluska, who lives in West Kelowna. “Because this is on a fixed date, parents know
that they can come up here and this is how they start their summer off. The teams all get a minimum of 10 games, so the kids are happy, too. In not just the event, it’s the whole experience. There’s just a lot of excitement.” In an era when many minor sports in the province are struggling to maintain their numbers, flag football is flourishing. The game grew 30 per cent in 2013 and another 40 per cent this year. In B.C., 175 teams and 1,500 athletes were registered this spring. In Kelowna, there were more than 300 flag players registered this season, with 27 of the 32 local teams playing at provincials. Kelowna Minor Football president Jeff Koltun said the growth is tied to several factors, including the inclusive, affordable and accessible nature of the sport. “The teams are small, all kids get playing time and there’s very little cost involved, we supply all
the equipment,” said Koltun. “With only five players on the field at one time, it’s easy to rotate kids in and out, so they all get a chance to play and develop their skills. It’s a very simple sport for parents to get their kids involved in.” Gluska said flag football can be used as a stepping stone into tackle football, or simply as a fun participation sport of its own. “It’s a trend in North America where people wanting to get involved in football, flag is an entry point, a great opportunity for them,” Gluska added. “It’s non-contact, kids are out there playing football, it’s integrated where we have girls playing…and it’s also developing skills. “A lot of organizations are looking at running fall programs now because of the high interest in flag football. For some kids, this is all the football they’ll play.” Gluska said several more fields—including converting ball diamonds at the Mission sports fields—will be added next year to accommodate as many as 160 teams. Raiders tied for first with ‘Rocks
The Kelowna Raiders pulled into a tie for top spot in the Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League with a 12-7 win over the Armstrong Shamrocks Friday at Nor Val Arena. The Raiders and ‘Rocks are both 4-2 on the season. Kelowna jumped out to a 4-1 first-period lead, then in the second turned aside a big push by the Rocks, as Graham Cousins stood tall with the spectacular saves in the Raiders’ net. The Raider defence held the Shamrocks at bay in the third and added a pair of insurance goals the win. Vic Wiens and Joe Brown led Kelowna with a hat trick each, while Luke Bailey scored twice. All three players played
excellent offence and defence. Rookie Scott Renner had seven points, including six assists, while Cody Evans and Jacob Illichmann each scored singles to round out the scoring. Sniper Jarrett Medhurst led the Shamrocks with five goals. The Raiders return to action Saturday, June 14 when they again visit the Shamrocks.

Liquid Lightning swimmers took advantage of home water at the Johnson-Bentley pool as the club hosted its May jamboree. This is a fun event for swimmers who have not yet achieved the four minute mark in the 200 metre individual medley. Bogdan Khomulenko, 15, set all personal bests including a 3:53.72 in 200 I.M., which qualifies him for regional meets. He won the 100-m. freestyle, 50-m backstroke, 50-m breaststroke and 100 back. Alexander Hurd, 8, swam all best times and won the boys nine and
under division of the 25 free, 25 back, 25 fly and 25 breast. In her first jamboree, Kaleigh Reese, 8, won the girls nine and under 25 fly, 25 back and 25 breast. Ashlinn Salverda, 10, went five for six on best times and out touched the rest in the 50, 100 and 200 m breast events. Olivia Dorantes-McCarten, 10, swam to all best times including taking over nine seconds off her 50 breast to take second place. Benjamin Strobel, 8, swam 100 percent best times and took second place in the boys nine and
under 25 free and 25 fly. It was the first jamboree for Jordan Meyer, 7, who swam to second in the boys nine and under 25 back and 25 breast. Tyler Lum, 7, took 19 seconds off his best time in the 25 free. Paige Allan, 9, swam to second in the 100 breaststroke while Maura Guidi, 7, took second in the girls 9 and under 25 breast, 25 free and 25 back. Among eight Okanagan teams, the Ogopogos won the overall team title by a convincing 300 points over the second place team, with total of 4,631 points. “I am very pleased with how the team is looking this early into the season,”said Ogopogo Swim Club Ccoach Sally Wallick. “There were many exciting races on the weekend and it has lit a spark in the entire teams’ motivation and their hard
work is paying off. I am looking forward to another great summer of training and fast racing,” In addition to fast races by the entire team, there were several Ogopogo members who achieved overall points awards. A motivational speaker, a popular Canadian music group and an 11-year-old activist thanked 1,000 local students for their actions, which have helped youth in developing communities access education. The We Create Change Tour stopped at Mount Boucherie Senior Secondary Friday as part of its 10-week, 90-stop cross-Canada tour. Along with recognizing the students’ accomplishments, Free The Children ambassador Spencer West encouraged youth in attendance to continue raising money so more schools can continue to be built around
the world. “There are still 57 million kids who are denied access to education,” said West. “Through my work with Free The Children, I’ve seen how education can literally break the cycle of poverty overseas.” West said he first experienced such depth of poverty during a trip to Kenya six years ago. As he helped build a school with Free The Children during that trip, West said he recognized the difference education was making for entire communities. “Not only were kids going to school, but then they were taking what they learned back to their parents.”

That experience also led West to use his own story as motivation for others in North America—to show them anyone can make a difference. At the age of five, West lost both of his legs and was told he would never be a functioning member of society. But, he said, that’s a statement he refused to believe. West reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2012, raising more than $500,000 to bring sustainable water projects to communities affected by drought. He completed a 300-kilometre walk from Edmonton to Calgary on his hands and in his wheelchair last year to raise money for Free The
Children’s water initiative. Canadian musicians Neverest performed and 11-year-old activist Hannah Alper spoke to the students at MBSS Friday. Students at Mount Boucherie were congratulated for reaching their fundraising goal of $10,000. Other local schools were also thanked for various fundraising initiatives. “I’m just really proud of what we’ve done. I hope the students walk away feeling honoured and excited to continue to change the world.” The We Create Change Tour will move to the Lower Mainland next week before wrapping up in Toronto June 17.
Clifton Road input sought The City of Kelowna and its design consultant, Focus Engineering, want to hear from the public about plans for road and drainage improvements along Clifton Road. The public is invited to view the preferred design concept and construction schedule for making Clifton Road into four lanes between Clement Avenue
and Lambert Avenue, including upgrades to sanitary, water, drainage and retaining walls June 12 from 5 p.m.to 7 p.m. at St Pius X Church, 1077 Fuller Ave. The proposed improvements to Clifton Road will incorporate widening to four-lanes, new sidewalks on both sides, street lighting, sani-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Pauline Soucy (nee Stanway) in her 78th year on June 7, 2014 in Kelowna. Survived by husband of 57 years, Frank Soucy. Mother and Grandmother to Stephen, Kelly Soucy, Lindsay and Landon; and Angelo, Lisa Paladino and Daniel. Pauline has a loving family in England, Spencer and Sheila Stanway, Albert and Elsie Stanway, Colin and Brenda Stanway, Beryl Moore, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by Eric, Joyce Stanway and Clark Moore. Her Loving Family in Canada includes Roger and Annette Soucy, Anita and Richard Cupido, Laurie Groenweg, Ted Soucy, Gilbert and Dorothy Soucy, as well as many nieces and nephews. Pauline is pre deceased by Peter Groenweg. Pauline and family are so fortunate to have Mary Mcbain and family as part of our family. Bill Mcbain and Pauline are sharing stories. WARNER, (ELLA) JEAN (Ella) Jean Warner passed away at the Kelowna General Hospital on Friday, June 6, 2014. “Auntie Jean” was born on July 2, 1917 in a stone house in rural Saskatchewan. Her father J. A. Warner was the municipal secretary and postmaster there. Her mother, Janet was very active in the community life there. She was the youngest child in a family of seven. Jean attended Normal School and taught in rural schools in Saskatchewan and Ontario. After the war she taught returning soldiers who wished to further their education. Later she taught in the public school system in Winnipeg until her retirement in 1978. In 1980 she moved to Kelowna and became active in a variety of interests including Sunshine Theatre, Kelowna Historical Society and St. Paul’s United Church. Jean loved golf and was an active member of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. Her extensive travels included trips to Scandinavia, Europe, U.S.A. and Northern Canada. She was predeceased by her brothers Clare, Albert and Jimmy Warner and sisters Grace Ferguson and Gwen Stinson, nephews Jack, Glenn, George and Don Warner. Surviving nieces and nephews include Graeme and Bill Ferguson, Janet Kroitor, Mary Hooper, Dennis, Mac and Gilbert Warner, Peg Lidster, Pat Carpick, Lynne Murphy and Randy Stinson to all of whom she was very special. If friends so desire donations may be made to a charity of their choice. A private family memorial service is being held in Kelowna. The ashes will be interred later in Saskatchewan.
