Message from the Mayor Welcome to the Summer 2014 Chilliwack Leisure Guide. Whatever your recreation passion, there is definitely something for you in Chilliwack. With our lakes, rivers, mountains, parks and fields, your outdoor recreational options are almost endless. In addition to getting outside, weâ€™ve delivered a top-notch summer program lineup in this Leisure Guide offering something for every age and interest. The programs in our Leisure Guide are made possible thanks to strong relationships between many different stakeholder groups. This guide is the result of partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No. 33, who assist in the support of the Community School Associations. Each contributor to the Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of the residents of our community. Likewise, many of our facilities are operated by an independent contractor with the expertise and knowledge best suited for daily operations. They help shape the recreational programming we all enjoy. The City of Chilliwack has a facility to meet all your needs:

Evergreen Hall

Located at 9291 Corbould Street, the Evergreen Hall is a prime location to host gatherings of various types and sizes. The Cheam Room is a full size gymnasium, which can host 450 people in a banquet setting and as many as 650 people in a theatre style setting. The Minto Room has a capacity to host 20 â€“25 people and is ideal for small gatherings. The Slesse Room has a capacity to host up to 70 people if a mid size setting is what you are seeking.

The Landing Sports Centre

There is more to this facility than meets the eye. Located at 45530 Spadina Avenue, the Landing Sports Centreâ€™s main floor has the capacity to host gatherings for as many as 1870 people. The Loft area provides space large

enough for 250 people in a banquet setting and up to 300 people in a theatre setting. If a small meeting room is what you need, the Clover Room has a meeting capacity of 30. If you enjoy playing tennis year round, the Landing Sports Centre can accommodate you with the four indoor tennis courts.

Exhibition Synthetic Turf Field

In October 2013, the new Exhibition synthetic turf field was officially open for use. Considered one of the largest synthetic turf facilities in the Lower Mainland, the over-size field is designed to accommodate football games for both CFL and NFL rules, a full size soccer pitch, or three mini soccer pitches. The field can also accommodate 12 micro soccer games running concurrently.

The installation of the shock pad underneath the turf provides an added layer of support and protection for the players and the covered enclosed team benches keep the players comfortable during the rainy or hot weather. There are four team change rooms and a referee change room available for use upon request. A turf warm-up area is available for teams waiting to enter the field that has ladders and other warm up aids stitched into the turf. The 2,000 seat covered grandstand provides a great viewing experience for the spectators and the perimeter fencing around the entire site provides security for ticketed entry events. Field scoreboard and public address system are also available upon request. Full concession services are available through the Chilliwack Football Club.

Recreation and Culture Chilliwack Secondary School Turf Field

Opened in early 2014, Chilliwack Secondary School turf field is the newest synthetic field in Chilliwack. Built in partnership with the Chilliwack School District and the City of Chilliwack, the field will accommodate school classes and sports teams until 6 pm each school day and community use will begin after 6 pm weekdays, and all weekends and holidays. The field is designed to accommodate field hockey, full size soccer and mini soccer games with permanent lines sewn into the turf. There are field lights and washrooms available on site as needed. For all community use requests please contact the Recreation and Culture Department at 604-793-2904.

Townsend Park Turf

Built in 2008, Townsend turf was Chilliwackâ€™s first synthetic turf field and is home to minor football and soccer. The field dimensions and line markings can accommodate games for CFL football rules, full size and mini soccer, and field hockey. The field lights provide high quality lighting for both evening games and practices, covered team benches keep the players comfortable during inclement weather and the bleachers can accommodate between 400-500 spectators. Team and referee change rooms, scoreboard and public address system are available upon request and perimeter fencing surrounds the entire field and spectator area providing security for ticketed entry events. Full concession services are available through the Chilliwack Minor Football Association.

Twin Rinks

Located at 5725 Tyson Road, the Twin Rinks ice arena was founded in 1982. It is the premier location for public skating, drop-in hockey as well as organized ice sports such as Minor Hockey, Seniors Recreational Hockey, Figure Skating and Speed Skating. If you are planning a special event such as a birthday party, or corporate event, Twin Rinks can accommodate you with skate rentals and meeting rooms.

Parks & Trails Top Five Dog Tips for Local Parks and Trails License Your Dog A license isn’t just a fashion accessory for your beloved pooch, it helps identify your dog if it gets lost. Leash Make sure your pet is under control. Whereas you may be comfortable around your pet, others may not be. An over excited or aggressive animal can increase others discomfort or fear. Unleash The City of Chilliwack has off-leash locations for your dog to run freely. They are: South Chilliwack – The former Canadian Forces Base at Nord Road North Chilliwack – Island 22 at Cartmell Road When visiting the off-leash areas please keep toys and snacks off site and remain on site with your pet at all times. Don’t forget to leash your pet on your way to or when leaving the off-leash area Pick-Up Remember to pick up anything your dog has left behind.

Waterfowl in Parks

Digging Dogs love to dig; however, we ask that they not do so in our parks or along our trails.

Chilliwack’s Water Spray Parks

The City of Chilliwack has two water spray parks available for the public’s enjoyment. The parks are located at the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre and the Cheam Centre in Garrison Crossing. Each of these park areas also provide picnic space and leisure opportunities for young and old to participate in.

While it is enjoyable to feed the waterfowl, it is detrimental to them and our environment and creates numerous problems such as: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to a high concentration of birds • Overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population • Feeding destroys the bird’s natural ability to forage and find food for themselves • Deprives the birds of essential nutrients • It reduces useable areas due to large amount of feces and aggressive fowl Feeding waterfowl is also illegal and can result in a fine of up to $2000 (Bylaw #2974) Please help us control the waterfowl population and remember; real geese do not eat bread.

The City of Chilliwack’s Recreation and Culture Department invite individuals, organizations or service clubs to participate in our Bench Recognition Program. This program may be a tribute to honor one or more persons in memoriam, for his/her past or present contribution to the community, a service club project, or for their contribution to any other special event. A variety of areas around the community have been set out to allow for a variety of selection options when determining where a bench will be placed. The Street Entertainment/Busking Program The Street Entertainment Program allows entertainers the opportunity to showcase their talents in a number of locations in downtown Chilliwack as well as a number of local park areas. Illiteratty CH Great harmonies, playful and original arrangements that delight and entertain, and songwriting that connects with audiences characterize this unique folk band. This exhibit presents historic health-related artifacts which recall the passage of time as experienced by older and younger generations alike. Chilliwack’s Great War at Home and Overseas August 4th 2014 marks the 100 year anniversary of Canada entering World War I as part of the British Empire. This exhibit recalls events of the time, and honours the memory of those from Chilliwack whose lives were impacted and changed forever by the war.

A Long Way to Tipperary: The Great War in Canada and Chilliwack. Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Sharing Nature with our Community

Come out and discover this peaceful place, enjoy a walk and watch for the wide variety of wildlife including one of the largest breeding colonies of Great Blue Herons in B.C. Hundreds of herons nest on site every year from March to July. There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a beautiful wetland located along the Vedder River at the south end of Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale. The programs and services at this City of Chilliwack site are managed by the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society.

Swimming Lesson Descriptions What swim level is my child? We recommend a Free Assessment. Drop in anytime and have one of our aquatic specialists evaluate your child.

Parent & Tot (6 – 35 months) In this program we introduce your child to water, build their water confidence, and educate you as the parent on pertinent water safety. Our program consists of singing songs and playing interactive games, through fun group activities we will appeal to your child’s curiosity and desire for play, while we increase their comfort in and under the water. In addition, we will promote balance and movement; and begin swim skill acquisition. Preschool 1 (Ages 3 – 5) In this beginner level, all skills are assisted by the instructor. Using games and activities, swimmers will learn to submerge, open their eyes under water, develop basic floats, glides and kick. Preschool 2 – 3 (Ages 3 – 5) Swimmers will further develop unassisted floats, glides, and kicking. They will learn to swim up to 10 metres, and perform skills in deep water. Preschool 4 – 5 (Ages 3 – 5) Swimmers will increase their swimming distance to 20 metres, and their surface support to 20 seconds. They will learn the fundamentals of front crawl, back swim and be introduced to whip kick. The majority of this class is taught in deep water.

Swim Kids 1 – 2 (Ages 6+) This entry level program provides an orientation to safety around the water and pool area. Floats and glides with kick are introduced. Children build their endurance using flutter kick with assisted glides. Swim Kids 3 – 5 (Ages 6+) These levels build the child’s skill in front and back crawl, diving, sculling, and whip kick. They are taught to be water safe by understanding their own limits and learning boating skills. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and dolphin kick, up to a 50-metre swim. Swim Kids 6 – 7 Front and back crawl continue to be refined. Elementary backstroke and whip kick on the front are introduced. Ice safety, choking, and elementary rescue of others with throwing assists are taught. Endurance is built to a 150-metre swim. Swim Kids 8 – 10 Breaststroke, butterfly and scissor kick are introduced, and all strokes continue to be refined. Surface dives, rescues from ice, and rescue breathing are taught. They learn about fitness and making wise choices. Endurance is built using dolphin kick, butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim. Private Swimming Lessons Enjoy exclusive one on one instruction! Bronze Medallion Must be 13 years old (or must have completed Bronze Star). Must be able to complete a timed swim of 500m (20 lengths) in 14 minutes to pass. Successful completion includes CPR-A certification.

Cheam and Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre Registered Programs Youth in the Weight Room (13 – 14 years) Youth must attend and complete a Weight Room orientation in order to use the weight room. Upon completion you will receive a Gym Use Teen Graduate Card which validates using the equipment safely. The card must be presented each time you use the weight room unattended by an adult. Youth Fitness Programs: Zumbatomic Exclusively for kids (ages 6-11), Zumbatomic classes are rockinâ€™ highenergy fitness-parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love, like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more.

Yoga for Teens Age 13+ Drawing on their experience through creative reflection, teens explore the physical and philosophical practice of traditional yoga. Teen yoginis develop body and mind strength and flexibility through yoga poses, breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation. Teen yoga helps create a positive environment that supports self-esteem, body appreciation and tools for stress management.

First Aid Courses Red Cross First Aid Goal: “Improve quality of life by preparing to make safe choices, prevent injuries, and help in emergency situations.” Red Cross Slogan: Red Cross First Aid. Heritage Park Chilliwack Heritage Park is a 65 acre park that boasts a 150,000 square foot building which can accommodate a number of events. Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals, Kart Racing and local club events just to name a few. There is a seven acre field for outdoor concerts and festivals as well as plenty of space for camping with your event. There is also a 5/8 mile race track and rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events. All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals. Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also

attracts travellers from all over the Canada, as well as many visitors from the United States. Heritage Park is a versatile facility. Features include a flexible public address system, box office and show office. The building is comprised of four floors; two are concrete floors that measure approximately 35,000 square feet each. There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor. We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements. The building houses a portable stage, as well as tables and chairs. Our washroom facilities include showers and are handicapped accessible. Heritage Park is not only a fine multiuse facility, but it also offers you a management and staff who are committed to your satisfaction. We would be pleased to work with you to help make your event a success.

Affordable Recreation The strength of a community can often be measured by the health and wellness of the members with in it.

The City of Chilliwack believes that, within reason, its citizens’ financial circumstances should not present a barrier for them to access leisure activities

Leisure Access Pass Residents living within the City of Chilliwack who have limited financial resources, are encouraged to apply for a Leisure Access Pass. This pass will allow the holder a pricereduced entry into the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre, Cheam Leisure Centre or any City run public program offered at Prospera Centre or Twin Rinks. Applications are available at the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department at Chilliwack City Hall, the Cheam Leisure Centre, the Chilliwack Landing Leisure Centre or online at www.chilliwack.com

Grade 5 Get Active Facility Pass With the primary purpose of increasing participation and fitness levels of Grade five students, the Chilliwack Active Communities Committee is pleased to provide the Grade 5 Get Active Facility Pass program. In partnership with the City of Chilliwack Parks, Recreation & Culture, Leisure Recreation Group, the Chilliwack Family YMCA and the Chilliwack School District this pass is made available to all grade five public, home or private schooled students in Chilliwack. The facility pass provides free admission to public swims, skates and selected drop-in sports from September 1st of the current year and expires August 31st of the following year.
