Want to learn more about the unique world of bats? Do you want free mosquito control? Whether you want to promote bats in your garden or you need advice to safely evict them from a building, the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) can help.

The KCBP provides educational programs on bats, works with landowners who have bats in buildings, and promotes the annual bat count to monitor bat populations.

Of the sixteen species of bats in B.C., over half are red or blue-listed, meaning their populations are declining and they could become endangered.

There are many threats to these amazing creatures of the night including habitat loss, intentional extermination (which is illegal under the B.C. Wildlife Act), wind farm development, and most recently, White Nose Syndrome which is a devastating introduced fungus that has already killed approximately 6 million bats in North America.

Basically, bats need all the help they can get.

Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the KCBP seeks information from the public on where bats roost, provides site visits and advice to residents with bats

in buildings, and requests help from the public to act as Citizen Scientists to help count bat populations. A local biologist can visit your property to assess your bat situation, identify the bat species, and provide you with information on safe evictions and

bat-houses.

One of the focuses this year is on the BC Bat Count where residents are encouraged to count bats leaving a roost site on their property for four nights in order to monitor populations. This long-term monitoring information is very valuable

since there is very little known about local bat species and their population numbers.

Sixty-first in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names.

A few weeks ago, this column looked at the ghost town of Ferguson and accompanied it with a picture of its last real landmark, the Hotel Lardeau.

That resulted in a call from Mike Laughton, best known as the first Nelson-born hockey player to make the NHL, whose grandfather John Cooper (Jack) Laughton (1874-1958) operated the hotel for many years.

Jack and brothers Alexander (Sandy) and Robert came to Canada from Scotland’s Orkney Islands. It’s not clear when the hotel was built or if the Laughtons were its original proprietors, but in an early mention, the Revelstoke Herald of August 23, 1899 stated: “J. Laughton leaves tomorrow morning for Ferguson to get the Hotel Lardeau in shape for opening.”

Soon after, ads appeared claiming the hotel was the “Best $2 a day house in the Lardeau … Choicest wines, liquors, and cigars. Headquarters for miners and mining men.”

Jack and Sandy first show up as Ferguson hoteliers in the 1900-01 BC directory. Sandy continued to run the hotel until his death of consumption in 1916 while Jack and Robert concentrated on the Victoria and Selkirk hotels in Revelstoke.

Mike Laughton broke into the NHL in 1967-68. This card is from 1970-71.

Hotel in 1916 but a dozen years later sold it back to Jack, who brought wife Margaret (Peggy) and four children to town, including Mike’s father.

Jack remained there until a year before his death.

According to Milton Parent in Circle of Silver, “He had resisted moving from Ferguson even though making a living in this business had been marginal for many years … Jack’s less-than-elegant approach to proprietorship of the Lardeau appealed to many of his customers …”

visiting his grandparents in Ferguson when the town was down to about 15 people. “I don’t know how many patrons the hotel had,” he says. “Every room had those beautiful washbowls and kerosene lamps. We always went up before the end of October. Once snow set in, it was hard to get in there. There was an old livery stable across the street and we used to go there and watch horses being shod.”

The abandoned hotel was a popular subject for photographers including

Donovan Clemson and Ellis Anderson.

It was still standing as of 1965, but disappeared by 1973. The BC Archives has its guest register covering 1910-17.

In 2008, on the 50th anniversary of his grandfather’s death, Mike and wife Georgi went to Ferguson to see the hotel’s site. “We looked around and there was nothing,” Georgi says.

“It was a strange and sad feeling standing in the open lot and visualizing what was there when he was young.”

There are no issues put to rest like long-standing issues.

A boil water advisory has existed in Robson since 1997 due to bacterial contamination, and to say residents find it tedious would be an understatement.

Work has continued toward correcting the situation in Castlegar’s western neighbour, and in the past couple of years there have been several optimistic announcements that the advisory would soon be a memory.

It’s little wonder that locals would greet such news with such enthusiasm – the boil water sign at the gateway to the community stands ominously… adding a sort of stigma that is, and will continue to be tough to shake.

Carol Zimmerman, Administrator with the Robson Raspberry Improvement District (RRID) knows the related history and the frustrations better than most. Zimmerman has learned to respond very carefully when asked for an estimate of when things will finally be put right. Past statements Trail District Arts Council presents

cracked valve,” she simplified. “They ran the system for 24 hours last weekend.

There are certain things they have to comply with, through health, as well.

The tank can only sit empty for so long before it has to be (treated) again with chlorine, etc.”

That got Zimmerman back to the point that it’s difficult to provide a date of when the system will be complete. She did, however, suggest that if all goes as hoped, the process could be ready for sampling and testing protocols to be carried out by Interior Health by July.

Gord Zaitsoff is the RDCK Regional Director for Rural Area “J,” and is very familiar with every phase of the ongoing process involving Robson water. Like many, he’ll be pleased and relieved to put the matter in the rear view mirror.

“There has been some frustration among the trustees,” he stated on June 3, “but I think we’re in the closing segment of this whole thing.”

There are already signs that a new lease on life is about to become prevalent in Robson, developmentally speaking as well.

The whole story behind the water purity question in Robson is quite complex… such that Zimmerman said she finds it a challenge to explain it to someone who is not well versed in the technical jargon.

Local artist highlighted during brain injury awareness month been putting brush to canvas and healing his brain injury through art.

He was an A-plus art student throughout high school, and although the brain injury did not take his talent away, the process of creating a painting was altered.

“I lost my imagination and ability to create things out of thin air,” said the now 40-year old. “I can reproduce almost anything but can’t think up the scenes without a visual.”

Often Johansen will walk down to the Columbia River or through the streets of Trail and later recreate the scene with paint using various mediums such as canvas, rock or pieces of wood.

“I see the beauty of everyday life and try to capture that because so many people are oblivious to it,” said Johansen.

“Little stuff that people take for granted, I see how breathtaking it can be.”

June is brain injury awareness month in the province, and for the first time the West Kootenay Brain Injury Association is highlighting Johansen’s paintings in an event at Waneta Plaza in Trail on June 14 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

It’s been 22 years since a carefree decision changed Patrick Johansen’s life forever.

The Grade 12 student was sleeping in the back seat of a friend’s car when the driver failed to negotiate a turn on Old Hedley Road in Hedley B.C., causing the vehicle to flip and land on top of the teenager.

“He only had his licence for six days, which I didn’t know,” said Johansen. “He went around a corner and didn’t quite make it and after the suburban rolled down a hill it came to rest on top of me.”

After spending five months in Kelowna General Hospital recovering from broken bones and a traumatic brain injury, the 18-year-old was moved to a group home to continue rehabilitation before returning to his mother’s home in Kamloops.

“But I remember my life before it quite well and am grateful so I don’t duplicate the stupid stuff I did in my youth.”

The Lincoln MKZ is the first vehicle in a four-vehicle transformation coming from the premium carmaker over a four-year timeline.

The MKZ has been selling well and the hybrid model has sold much better than Lincoln was expecting. But the reality is that Lincoln has a long way to go to resurrect this once mighty American luxury brand.

It’s hoped the brand’s new fashion-forward design will attract younger buyers, rather than the older crowd that traditionally purchases the brand. Another is providing value, something luxury buyers are not used too. The base MKZ and the Hybrid have the same starting price of $37,960 Looks This big Lincoln is built off the same platform as the less expensive Ford Fusion.

It could be argued that the front waterfall grille is dramatic and takes that base Ford sedan and turns it into the Lincoln with good effects. The standard LED headlamps also make a statement. It is the back of the car that I’m not sure about. The super clean and rather square rear deck lid and bumper, framed by a full width taillight, look modern but the rest of the car has sweeping lines. The back is chunkier looking. One thing we really miss is a rear trunk release on the outside of the car; you have to use the key fob or the interior release.

When you open the trunk, the area for storing the hybrid battery pack really limits the amount of space for carrying larger objects.

Inside Front and centre is the standard MyLincoln Touch system, which is the same as the MyFord Touch system. If Lincoln wants to charge more for its products, it should install a different system, as Cadillac does with the Cue system.

Both the regular gas model and the hybrid come nicely equipped. Many buyers will likely opt for the preferred package at $6,100 to get the huge panoramic sunroof, navigation system, heated rear seats and steering wheel, backup camera, blind spot warning system and more. This was the package on my test car, and it is a good deal, because for $46,000, the MKZ comes loaded. As a comparison, the

Drive The MKZ is sold in three configurations, the base front wheel drive (FWD) with a 4-cylinder turbocharged Ecoboost engine an all wheel drive (AWD) with a 3.7L V6 or this hybrid. Unfortunately, the V6 is the only one with AWD. The 2.0L Ecoboost turbo 4-cylinder is the same one used in the Range Rover Evoque and pumps out 240hp. The 3.7L V6 has 300hp and the 2.0L 4-cylinder matched to a hybrid system has a rather

pokey 141hp. The upside is that this car is rated at 4.0L/100kmh in both the city and highway. As I have remarked before, the Ford/ Lincoln hybrid system is one of the best on the market but invigorating it is not.

This is a cruiser; the whole setup is refined and muted making this MKZ not as edgy as it looks.

Historically, Lincoln’s main rival has been Cadillac but now these two companies couldn’t be farther apart.

Cadillac, with its award winning ATS and new CTS, contends with the best German

products. This MKZ isn’t going to get German car buyers excited.

Verdict Lincoln has done a good job of packaging the MKZ hybrid without a price premium. It comes nicely equipped and when fully loaded is a relative bargain in the luxury space.

But there are a few problems. One is the push button transmission. I’m not opposed to buttons, just to the fact they are not close to the driver; it’s a bit of a reach, especially going back and forth from drive and reverse,

several times, when parking. I much prefer the rotary dial in the Jaguar or the column shifter in the Mercedes products. The rest of the centre console is covered in hard plastic with sliding controls for the heat and radio, the rest are touchsensitive. Call me old school but I prefer a conventional layout. The biggest rival for this car is the less expensive Ford Fusion on which it is based. Lincoln should do more to differentiate itself from Ford. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around.

My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner.

A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America.

At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it.

Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. Curbers dedicated to separating you from your hard-earned cash

Curbers often lurk online and in the small print of classified advertising sections.

But no matter where they choose to advertise their cars for sale, their driving desire is to make you a bad deal dressed as a good one.

In the next two weeks, we’re going to take a look first at a typical curber profile then tell you about the activities of some specific conmen known to the

authorities. It is hoped that this information will ensure you won’t fall foul of these low-lifers. I’m indebted to the Vehicle Sales Authority for providing the research necessary for me to furnish with this advice.

I guess I’ve always had a cartoonish image of what a curber looks like but the VSA put me straight on that notion. Typically, the curber is a male, 45 or older but they can come in all ages, shapes and sizes. Frequently, they have a ‘your neighbour’ look, avoiding any-

thing flashy in appearance that might draw attention. Sometimes dresses like a mechanic or labourer who needs the cash urgently for one reason or another.

He always have a story about the vehicle that sounds reasonable, given that the buyer is really only interested in the car, not the story. However, sometimes there will be an elaborate yarn designed to elicit an emotional reaction; for example, he’s selling for his dad’s widow, his kid is going back to the home country for a visit. This is a

way they can “bridge” the registration – sell a vehicle still registered in someone else’s name.

The only way to reach him is by cell phone, he’s slippery about providing details and his availability. He will always be alone and usually has a payas-you-go phone. This enables him to switch SIM cards and use different numbers in ads for different cars. Here’s a tip: scan ads and see if any others read similarly to the one detailing the car you are interested in. They may be

slick but one downfall is their creative writing ability! – They usually use the same language and terms in all of their ads.

The viewing location will always be a parking lot, most often at a mall or large grocery store parking lot, and occasionally at service stations. He will avoid going for a test drive, saying that he’s not allowed to let someone else drive the vehicle for insurance reasons or the vehicle doesn’t have enough gas.

Putting the finishing touches to the magnificent Mustang

Our classic and collector car expert continues today with the third part of his four-part series on the restoration of public relations executive Laura Ballance’s rare 1967 Ford Mustang T5 by 360 Fabrication in Abbotsford.

The Mustang T5 body shell has been painted, clear coated, wet-sanded, re-cleared and finally polished to a show quality finish.

Now comes the fun part of a restoration, the reassembly, opening boxes and fitting all of those new parts. This is as close as you can get to being a car factory assembly line worker except you are doing every task instead of just one, and you have all the time that is needed and not having to work to the speed of a moving production line.

One of the upgrades that the T5 will receive is a new product designed to dampen and suppress the driveline and road noise, making the inner cabin as quiet as possible and a bit like a modern car. The foil covered pads have a peel off backing and are adhered to every inner sheet metal panel such as the roof, floor, doors and bulkhead. The next

step is to install the new wiring harness; old wiring harnesses become brittle over time due to heat and corrosion at the joints and terminals, ask the owner of any British Sports Car from that era!

The interior has been completely renewed from top to bottom staring with the headliner, trim panels, carpets, dash pads and the seats have all been reupholstered.

Before the new back glass and windshield are installed (all of the other glass panels have been replaced) the new vinyl top is installed. Installing a vinyl roof is not a task that is performed very often these days but 360 have the skills to do this in-house.

LKQ stocks a huge selection of high quality muscle car sheet metal and parts. “If you are doing a premium muscle car restoration the only sheet metal you want to use is from LKQ,” asserted Rick Francoeur at 360.

The exterior panels will soon have their final fitting. They have been fitted and removed during the restoration process countless times to make sure that the panel gaps are correct. The final fitting process will involve two or three people to make sure that the paint does not get chipped or damaged.

Before the original V-8 engine was removed from the car it underwent a compression check, all of the cylinders had equal and strong readings so a complete re-build was not necessary. The carburetor has been replaced with a new two-barrel, the automatic transmission has been completely re-built as has the rear axle.

Rick talked Laura out of fitting a modern rack and pinion power steering kit or even upgrading the manual steering box to a power-assisted unit so it will be reliving the Armstrong steering experience for Laura when parking at low speeds!

One safety upgrade is the installation of original Ford front disc-brakes; these are a must

in today’s traffic. Collector vehicle drivers are very cautious, invariably when accidents occur it is the drivers around you that are not paying attention or cutting you off.

360 have done their research and paid a lot of attention to detail during this rebuild, right down to avoiding the temptation of installing an exhaust system with two tailpipes.

Next week, we will explore what exactly a T5 is? How rare they are and explore some of the events that Laura and her brand new old car car will be attending in this 50th anniversary year of the Ford Mustang.

Bimmer 3 drives top sales

The compact 3 Series sedan is the definitive BMW and the most popular car made by the Bavarian Motor Works.

The 5th generation (2006 to 2011) of the 3 Series line had, by 2010, expanded to include Touring (wagon), 2-door coupe and Cabriolet (convertible) editions, in addition to the sedan, which is internally know as the E90.

2014 BMW 328i

Primarily a rear-drive vehicle with an in-line six cylinder engine up front, the 2010 sedan came as a 323i (2.5-litre), 328i (3.0-litre), 335i (twinturbo 3.0-litre) and 335d, with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel engine. All-wheeldrive sedan editions, with the x-Drive system, were the 328i xDrive and the 335i xDrive. There’s also an ultra high-performance and pricey M3 edition, with 4.0-litre V8 engine.

An all-new sixth generation BMW 3 Series sedan (know internally as the F30) was introduced for the 2012 model year. Longer and lighter, with more rear seat leg room, the new body styling comes with a more distinctive frontal appearance. The base engine is also a four-cylinder, which hadn’t been offered in a 3 Series since the 318i, back in the late 1990s.

Known as the N20 engine,

standard and is a popular transmission with 3 Series buyers. The automatic option was either a conventional six-speed (with a manual mode) or a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Moving ahead, the 2011 model year 3 Series came with a minor exterior refresh that included new headlight units with LED signals, modified front and rear bumpers and air intakes, and new taillights with LED technology.

Under-hood it also came with new TwinPower Tur-

and fitted in the 320i and 328i, this new four-cylinder also comes with TwinPower Turbo technology and can be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It makes the 2012 edition of the 328i both faster (0 to 100 km/hour in about six seconds) and more fuel efficient than its predecessor. In addition, it comes with a fuel-saving Auto Stop/Start system and Brake Energy Regeneration. City/highway fuel consumption is rated at a surprisingly frugal 8.0/5.3 L/100 km respectively.

Tip of the Week: Mercury is set to begin its next retrograde cycle from June 7 to July 1st. It begins its apparent backward motion in Cancer but will enter its own sign of Gemini on June 17th. When in Cancer, the usual challenges like miscommunication, delays, malfunctions of technology and so on will be especially noticeable. Yet, we may experience a reprieve of these ‘symptoms’ when Mercury re-enters Gemini where it is much more harmonious. So, we can expect something of a mixed bag of influences linked to Mercury retrograde beyond even the usual antics of this tri-annual cycle.

On June 23rd Venus will enter Gemini as well, contributing ‘her’ special attributes and talents to the mix. But Venus will not quite catch-up to Mercury while in Gemini before it re-enters Cancer on July 13th. But while both the inner planets, Mercury and Venus, are in Gemini for that 3 week period, people are apt to feel more social, in-tune with the season and the many festivals and celebrations that will be occurring during this time.

Mars in Libra, where it has been since early December 2013 due to its retrograde cycle, will contribute to the overall social tenor implied. Although it will not be quite fast enough to form a harmonious and creative trine to Mercury, it will with Venus. The organization representing public school parent advisory councils is calling for an immediate end to the teacher strike and lockout out of concern for students and families.

BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) president Terry Berting stated in a press release that the “feud”

between the BC Teachers’ Federation and the government is having a detrimental effect on students, particularly those most vulnerable, and creating financial hardship for struggling families.

The newly created park is 2.53 hectares (6.25 acres) and includes 30 meters (approximately 1,000 feet) of waterfront.

West Kootenay residents can expect gradual development and parking improvements at Crescent Valley Beach now that it has been officially designated as a regional park.

Brian Carruthers, chief administrative officer of the Regional District of Central Kootenay, said there are plans for development but that they likely won’t happen until next year. He said they are working with the Ministry of Transportation to come up with a parking development plan to provide safe access and to avoid people parking along the highway.

“Currently the parking is problematic.

We know that. The parking there was never designed. It just evolved,” said Carruthers.

Carruthers also said the presence of nearby nesting sites for the western screech owl will have to be kept in mind as they consider building new facilities and developing the area to better serve the crowds of people who routinely use the beach for tubing, kayaking, boating and swimming on the Slocan River.

“This is a very popular recreation site for local residents and visitors alike,” said Area H Director Walter Popoff. “The generosity of the landowner ensures this site will continue to be enjoyed and protected.”
