I

t’s a hot Friday afternoon and Peter Beyer walks into his house from outside and heads for his play room.

Inside, he turns on some switches, presses buttons on a controller and his dormant model train lights up, spouts steam from its stack and chugs along the track, its wheels clacking as they inch along the track.

Beyer didn’t just get home from school though. Instead, the 74-year old former marine parts salesman is an avid model train collector, one of several in the Valley.

Beyer along with fellow enthusiasts Carl Johnson and Bert Ward have as much fun with model trains now as when they were children. But as the years passed their hobby has become something akin to an art form.

An only child, Beyer distinctly remembers his first train in 1954.

“It was a Lionel model.

I got it for Christmas with a track layout and everything,” he said. “My friend Gerry Hickey and I used to play with it almost every day.”

Beyer continued to collect trains into his teen years. He added three locomotives: one for passenger and two for freight, and he built an elaborate track setup in the basement of his dad’s house.

around the tracks,” Beyer said.

Beyer had other interests after he turned age 16 so he sold his trains and bought a 1950 Austin 40. After high school he worked at BC Airlines, with the RCMP and then Western Marine. And in 1962 he married his wife.

He never lost his passion for model trains though and he started collecting them again, this time the H-O model which refers to the scale of the train.

Beyer moved to Port Alberni with his wife and bought a house near the former Klitsa School where they still live. He sold his trains

Johnson owns approximately 20 train engines which are powered electrically through the train tracks. “It works like a light dimmer: turn it up and the trains go faster. Turn it down and they go slower.”

Train collecting is also an art, Johnson said. He enjoys building the buildings that line the tracks in his basement. “I build them from scratch out of scrap wood.

I’ve built a post office building for Peter and Bert (Ward) too.”

Johnson and Beyer belong to a loose-knit association of model train collectors that meet in Nanaimo every three months.

They used to belong to a larger association in Vancouver – the Canadian Association of Railway Modellers – that meets every month.

Travel got too expensive to keep attending though so more than 30 enthusiasts from the Island formed a splinter group and now meet in Nanaimo.

Beyers, Johnson and Ward also used to buy their train equipment from Vancouver but don’t anymore. Instead, they now purchase their equipment from Eastside Trains in Kirkland, Wash.

Even the train passenger cars are intricately detailed.

He has 22 locomotives today but won’t venture to guess how much he has invested over the years. His train layout includes buildings and scenery that looks like a real town. There is a gas station, diner, post office, police car and other vehicles.

Beyer’s favourite train is a 1940 steam engine he bought three years ago from a Second World War veteran. “It was hard to find cars for it but I found them: four from Seattle and six from New York,” he said.

There is a difference between real train enthusiasts and model train enthusiasts, Beyer said. “I’ve ridden on the No. 7 and the Two Spot here in town but those are different guys and that’s a separate club,” he said. “Model trains are pretty close in scale though to the real ones.”

Carl Johnson, 68, has been fascinated with model trains since getting a wind-up engine as a four-year old in 1950.

Beyer and Johnson share a passion for trains and are good friends. The two have coffee and chat every day and spend time running trains at each others homes which are just blocks from one another.

“I like the tracks, the motion and the noise.

I like the realism of it,” Johnson said.

Johnson runs his trains once per week and works on it two to three times per week, he said. When he’s not working on his trains he’s visiting Beyer and

Police have arrested a 35-year old man in connection with a shooting on Tuesday night in Port Alberni.

RCMP Emergency Response Team members arrested the man shortly after 5 a.m. at a residence in Sproat Lake, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

Following a lead ERT members raided a home on Elkford Road in Port Alberni at 3 a.m. but the man wasn’t there. Other information led them to Sproat Lake.

The man remains in police custody and the investigation is ongoing, Allan said.

The RCMP police dog section combs the area next to the 3900 block of Tenth Avenue.

Police and emergency crews responded to a call to the 3900 block of Tenth Avenue shortly after 7 p.m., Allan said. There, police found a 32-year old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body.

BC Ambulance personnel transported the man to West Coast General Hospital.

Vancouver Island Health Authority officials confirm that a man suffering from gunshot wounds was airlifted from WCGH to Victoria where he

is receiving further medical treatment.

The man remains in serious condition, Allan said.

Police haven’t spoken to the suspect so a motive for the shooting isn’t known.

Local RCMP, the police dog unit and and the serious crimes section are all involved in the investigation.

The shooting wasn’t random, Allan said.

“Information from witnesses indicates that they knew each other,” Allan said.

“Both are also known to police.”

“With the west you are dealing with a smaller number of people,” Hasselback said.

Family environment is a factor in teen pregnancies. Many teen moms come from young family structures, he said.

In 1998, there were approximately 120 teen moms per 1,000 births in the Alberni Valley. In 2009 there were 75 and in 2014 there were 104.

The numbers mirror declines over the same period of time on the Island (from 65 to 40) and B.C. (55 to 30). But the numbers spike sharply in 2008, dip in 2009 before starting to spike again in 2010.

As well, officials see higher rates of young mothers in rural areas compared to cities.

“It’s possible that there is less access to services such as family planning, sex education and planned parenthood but we don’t know that for sure,” Hasselback said.

Teen pregnancy in Port Alberni is an old issue, Port Alberni Family Planning Director Laurel Lenormand said.

“I’ve been with the agency for 21 years and we’ve historically had a high rate of teen pregnancy,” she said.

The 45-year old association offers counselling services for individuals, couples and youth.

Teen moms are among its clients, Lenormand said. “We provide counselling on parenting and

relationships, and we provide support during and after pregnancy.”

Several factors may account for the number of teen pregnancies in Alberni, she said.

Some women come from families who have strong beliefs against abortion.

Others may have been socialized in families where having children at a young age is acceptable.

Wrestling the number of teen pregnancies will require a communitywide effort with public education about family and life. “Part of that must involve confronting teens with the reality of what it is to parent,” she said.

“But there is no one answer to this.”

Lenormand sees two other trends: one is the growing number of grandparents who are

raising grandkids; the other is the number of women living in poverty. “It seems the higher the poverty rate the more teen moms there are.”

In a 2011 report by child advocate group First Call, poverty is defined as living below the Statistics Canada low-income cut off. A family of four living in a city with an annual income of less than $34,829 is considered to be poor. A rural family the same size is considered poor if their annual income is under $22,783.

According to Statistics Canada, the average income for females in the Alberni Valley is $24,711; the median income is $19,700.

VIHA hasn’t done any analysis on the correlation of poverty to teen pregnancy on the island or in

BC, Hasselback said.

“But there does tend to be a correlation between rates of teen pregnancy with indicators of poverty,” he said.

Hasselback cautioned that Island and B.C. teen pregnancy rates as a whole decreased across the recession, as did it in most North American jurisdictions.

“A correlation does not imply causality, so while we can talk about correlation between the two factors, it may well

be that something contributes to both,” he said.

Adoption and abortion are options available to teen moms, but provincial legislation prevents the Ministry of Children and Families and the Ministry of Health from releasing any statistics.

Teachers, staff, volunteers and all of the other invisible people behind the scene are working to launch the Alberni District Secondary School Class of 2014 Graduation Prom off the ground this week.

After entering Grade 12 and then final exams prom is the second to last step of saying goodbye to Grade 12 and moving on to the next phase of life whether that be post secondary, trades or work.

The final step will be the official grad ceremony at the end of June.

Prom is a special time and has its own rituals.

Girls get their make up and hair done then don a nice dress, shoes and corsage.

Re: Teen moms part three: former teen mom shares her story I was in that same teen mom group (and) I am now 43-years old.

There actually was a daycare created at the high school back then I would say in about ‘92 or ‘93.

I was a little older then the other girls but still at age 19 and without a post high school education and only a GED it was very tough.

The group was great way to get out with other young moms and they taught us some great skills as new moms, and life skills in general. It was very progressive for over 20 years ago.

I am glad to see Rhonda (VanAdrichem ) is now paying it forward. (I remember her vaguely from the group as there weren’t alot of us and her face, name and sons name are in my memory).

I am in no way an advocate for teen pregnancy and do not ever wish that on anybody (based on my own experience) as it is such a struggle.

But things do happen.

And like all moms I am so glad I have

my wonderful daughter who is now a successful, kind, hardworking and compassionate girl with the whole world at her feet and would not change that for anything .

I am glad the number of resources are increasing for when it does happen to young women/ teens today.

Education in all respects is the key to help these young moms become respectful, and contributing members of society, as well as becoming role models for their own child/ children.

The behavior of the junior hockey society and the inherent cost structure has ensured that the team will fold after two years unless the city throws in more of our money.

Last week an amazing story of a major-league snafu came out of Paris, and there is a possibility of a link to the BC Premier’s Office -- something of a ‘French Connection’ you might say.

The French highspeed railway system ordered almost 2,000 new trains costing about $20-billion, only to find that the new trains were too wide to fit 1,300 existing platforms at stations they serviced.

Upgrading the platforms will cost upwards of $100-million.

You couldn’t make up stuff like this, but there was something apparently made up about the present occupant of the BC

premier’s office when the Liberals first came to power 13 years ago.

In 2001 the new education minister and deputy premier was none other than Christy Clark, whose own education record said that she had graduated from The Sorbonne in Paris.

After repeated questioning, it turned out that she attended a short course for a few weeks at that August centre of higher learning.

As The Sorbonne is the French equivalent of Harvard or Yale in the US, and of Oxford or Cambridge in the UK, there’s every chance that some of the top designers and builders of the new snafu express were also alumni of that prestigious and revered Paris university.

From the time Ms. Clark’s apparent curriculum vitae embellishment came to light, I’ve always thought that there is something misty and twisty about Christy.

In her three years as premier, despite her delusions of adequacy, every time she opens her mouth, it seems that it is only to change feet.

Many of us are busy planting our gardens - hoping for a bountiful year of vegetables and fruits to store up for the winter. Most gardeners know that much depends on the weather, the care we take and the work we put into looking after the crops. There are two lessons for spiritual life that we can learn from our gardening efforts. First, it’s important to remember that the real work is not completed in a single growing season, but over years of practice. Second, it is a process made easier by a community of shared values.

We’ve learned a lot about gardening from people who have done it much longer than we have. We’ve also learned to appreciate different strategies for achieving the same results. In the Christian faith, we have living mentors and allies in the faith who can give advice, and who let us know it’s all going to be okay. Whether you are just growing a bean in a cup on your windowsill, or whether you are a master gardener, remember that things grow naturally when they are given what they need. Be generous to yourself, and give yourself the space, the sunshine, and the soil you need to be fruitful.

Putting the finishing touches on the magnificent Mustang

The exterior panels have been fitted and removed during the restoration process.

The Mustang T5 body shell has been painted, clear coated, wet-sanded, recleared and finally polished to a show quality finish.

Now comes the fun part of a restoration, the reassembly, opening boxes and fitting all of those new parts.

One of the upgrades that the T5 will receive is a new product designed to dampen and suppress the driveline and road noise, making the inner cabin as quiet as possible and a bit like a modern car. The foil covered pads have a peel off backing and are adhered to every inner sheet metal panel such as the roof, floor, doors and bulkhead. The next step is to install the new wiring harness; old wiring harnesses become brittle over time due to heat and corrosion at the joints and terminals, ask the owner of any British Sports Car from that era!

The interior has been completely renewed from top to bottom staring with the headliner, trim panels, carpets, dash pads and the seats have all been reupholstered.

In the nine hole low handicap division Sharon Hillman won the low gross, Pennie Churchill took both low net and the lowest putts of the day.

In the high handicap division Lee Anne Van Lent took the low gross , Betty Adair won the low net , there was a three way tie for lowest putts between Joan Hall, Bea Stuyt, and Betty Adair.

Pars were had by Sharon Hillman on No. 11 and No. 18, Betty Adair had a par on No. 17. Adair also had a chip in on No. 17 and Pennie Churchill had a chip in on No. 15.

Predeceased by his father, Emilio in 2010. Â Survived by his mother Maria, his loving wife Roberta Peters, his daughter Sheena Maughan, sons Antonio, Jr. & Niko Fiorilli and granddaughter Makyla.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Father, Poppa, Uncle, and (Great) Grandfather, Louis Wayte.

Born July 17, 1921 in Coventry, England, to Thomas Henry Wayte and Mary Ellen Moore, Louis slipped away peacefully in the company of family on May 16, 2014 at N.R.G.H. He was predeceased by his dearest Patricia, his parents, nine siblings, step-son Derek Lepsoe, and grandson Daniel Lepsoe.

Louis is survived by his daughter, Louise (Mike) Pearson; step-sons, Robert (Cora) Lepsoe, Christopher (Janet) Lepsoe; step-daughter-in-law, June Lepsoe; grandchildren, Larissa (Peter) Richards, Bryanna Pearson, Diana Pearson, Karen Snowshoe, Robert (Felice) Lepsoe, Kevin (Catherine) Lepsoe, Stephanie (Duncan McAndrew) Lepsoe, Christina Lepsoe, Michael Lepsoe; two great-grandchildren Mila and Beatrix; and many nieces and nephews.

In 1939, Louis enlisted in the R.A.F., earning the D.F.M. during WWII as a Lancaster rear gunner.

After the war he attended Teachers’ College in England, came to Powell River, BC on a teaching exchange, returned to England briefly, and then immigrated to Canada. He eventually retired in 1979 from a rewarding long career as a teacher and librarian at Woodlands School in Nanaimo. His great passions were reading, golf, cryptic crosswords, athletics, acting, and a 4pm Newcastle Brown!

He was a lifelong member of the Nanaimo Golf and Country Club and an engaging volunteer at the Nanaimo Military Museum. All who knew him will miss his storytelling and wealth of knowledge on a myriad of subjects.

Thank you to all the family and friends who supported us with love and prayers and to the medical staff that attended Louis during his stay at N.R.G.H. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-3pm on June 22, 2014 at 1080 Highview Terrace, Nanaimo. Flowers are gratefully declined in lieu of a donation to a charity of your choice.

Every inch of the 700 square-foot basement in his home is covered in train tracks, trains and scenery.

It all started with a Lionel steam engine he was given for Christmas as a 10-year old.

“My father and brother-in-law took it out and played with it for a half hour and I had to sit their and watch,” he said.

“I still have that engine. I call it my treasure.”

Ward runs 0-27 Gauge trains which he says shouldn’t be confused with O-Gauge. “O and O-27 have he same width track but the O-Gauge has a higher track than the O-27,” Ward said. “The average person couldn’t tell but if you know then you can see the difference.”

Ward, Beyer and Johnson are fast friends. The three chat, laugh and trade barbs in Wards basement. “Those two are just kids,” Ward said motioning to his friends. When Johnson was asked for the correct spelling of his last name Ward said “It’s spelled D-um-m-y.”

Ward has grandchildren who don’t understand his passion for trains.
