Plehanov faces sex charges Former TOC here arrested in Surrey in March 2013

Aleksandr Plehanov, a former School District 43 substitute teacher, is facing sex charges in Surrey, The Tri-City News has learned.

According to court documents, Plehanov, a Burnaby resident, is facing one count of touching for a sexual purpose a person under the age of 16 and another count of sexual assault related to a March 2013 arrest in Surrey. He is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on the matter next month in B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey.

The Tri-City News has also learned that

ALEKSANDR PLEHANOV Plehanov’s teaching certificate, which was initially suspended in 2010, was cancelled last month and he has been ruled ineligible to practise for three years. A public hearing would have to be held before his licence could be reinstated, should he apply.

Lucy’s on the loose no longer Rescue dog that escaped repeatedly is captured

If Lucy could speak, what a tale she could tell.

The two-year-old border collie has spent much of her young life — 299 days to be exact — on her own after first escaping from a backyard last August. She managed to elude her captors for close to 10 months, with sightings being phoned in across the Tri-Cities.

Lucy’s solo travels came to an end last week when Petsearchers Canada, a pet detective business that tracks missing animals, was able to capture the missing K9 with the help of some Coquitlam residents.

“She was definitely a challenge,”said Alesha MacLellan of Petsearchers.“She wouldn’t put herself in a situation where there wasn’t an exit route.”

Lucy’s bond with humans is fragile, MacLellan said. She was initially rescued from a hoarding situation in the United States where she was forced to compete with 150 other dogs for food. She was eventually adopted by a family in the Tri-Cities but manage to squirm her way out of a harness and escape the home.

Lucy was rescued from a hoarding situation in the U.S. but has repeatedly escaped from those who try to help the two-year-old border collie.

Al MacLellan, Alesha’s husband and co-worker, was able to briefly capture Lucy at Port Coquitlam’s Gates Park last October but she was able to escape out the door of his truck.

She eventually turned up in Coquitlam near Adler Avenue, where Peter and Hoshiko Barrington noticed her

frequenting the alley behind their home.

The couple contacted Petsearchers and agreed to help capture the dog.

Because Lucy is so fearful of humans, her pursuers set up a series of feeding stations starting at their back gate and leading into the Barringtons’ yard.

The couple diligently

monitored the food, making sure there was something available at all times, even getting up in the middle of the night to re-stock the stations, Peter Barrington said.

“We had to watch,” said Peter Barrington.

“Even when she wasn’t there, we had to keep an eye out so when she did finally come, the food

was there.”

Over a period of weeks, Lucy started to inch her way into the yard, at first just grabbing the food close to the gate before quickly exiting. When she finally became comfortable enough, she ventured all the way onto the property and the Barringtons were able to close their

gate and capture the animal.

Lucy is now in the possession of the MacLellans but once she becomes more accustomed to humans, she will be placed with a family.

So far, the dog has made some progress, becoming more comfortable with humans and

even taking food from Al MacLellan’s hand.

She may never be an offleash dog, Alesha said, but with some care and attention, her relationship with people could be normalized.

“She has never had the opportunity to build any trust,”Alesha MacLellan said.“It could take months for her to come around. To be a normal dog, it could even be a year or more.”

Peter Barrington said he hopes Lucy ends up with a nice family and is even considering adopting the animal himself.

“We have given it a lot of thought but I’m approaching 75 and she is just a young pup,”he said.“We are still chewing on the idea.

Oil pipeline route shifts amid blitz of questions Kinder line to run through more Metro parkland

Kinder Morgan has changed the preferred routing for its proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline project in some areas and wants more time from the National Energy Board to answer more than 10,000 intervenorsubmitted questions.

The company now proposes to infringe on at least three Metro Vancouver regional parks or greenways, and possibly Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park east of Chilliwack.

In Coquitlam and Burnaby, where the project previously was to run beneath Lougheed Highway for a long stretch, it will now follow United Boulevard then cut northwest through the Brunette River Conservation Area and Brunette-Fraser Regional Greenway before reaching Burnaby Mountain.

Senior project director Greg Toth said building the pipeline under Lougheed Highway would have meant much greater disruption to traffic during construction.

He said care will be taken to minimize impacts on the greenway as well as other parks.

“We have a lot of experience operating in environmentally sensitive areas,” Toth said, adding one segment of the Trans Mountain pipeline was twinned six years ago through Jasper National Park and Mt. Robson Provincial Park.

The proposed $5.4-billion project would nearly triple Kinder Morgan’s pipeline capacity to 890,000 barrels of oil per day and greatly increase the number of tankers passing through Vancouver harbour.

A tunnel bored through Burnaby Mountain is now the preferred route to connect a vastly expanded petroleum tank farm to the Westridge Marine Terminal for tankers on Burrard Inlet. Toth said the change dodges around Burnaby residents in the neighbourhood west of Burnaby Mountain and avoids traffic disruption to routes like Hastings Street, although that option remains a backup.

Under the new preferred routing, he said, the pipeline would not run over any private property in Burnaby.

Coquitlam environmentalists, meanwhile, are opposing the plan to

see “Kinder surprise” on page 10 use a 1.4-kilometre strip of Colony Farm Regional Park as a pipe assembly work zone.

A section of pipeline would be built there and then pulled into a tunnel to be drilled under the Fraser River to Surrey next to the Port Mann Bridge. The parkland would be restored to its previous condition, Toth said, but added alternatives to using Colony Farm continue to be explored.

In Surrey, the pipeline would run along the South Fraser Perimeter Road and along the southwest flank of Surrey Bend Regional Park to Golden Ears Way near 96 Avenue. Toth said route changes there have reduced the section within Surrey Bend by about one kilometre.

In north Langley, the route now runs through or adjacent to The Redwoods Golf Course, instead of the through the Salmon River valley further east near Fort Langley.

East of Chilliwack, a section that was previously to run on the north

side of Highway 1 is now proposed to follow the original pipeline corridor through the northwest corner of Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park.

The switch avoids using a new route near Cheam Lake Wetlands Regional Park on the other side of the freeway that locals opposed.

Toth said a wider corridor there could allow the new pipeline to bypass the provincial park by using local roads.

The Trans Mountain Pipeline was built in 1952 and pre-dates many B.C. parks, including Bridal Veil, that have since been created.

Besides Bridal Veil, the twinned corridor would run through North Thompson Provincial Pa r k , Fi n C r e e k Provincial Park, as well as the Lac Dubois and Coquihalla Summit protected areas.

Toth said routing currently proposed would bypass five other provincial parks that the current pipeline runs through.

Specific concerns in the Fraser Valley include

the risk of an oil spill contaminating the aquifer that provides Chilliwack’s drinking water.

Toth said that’s one of the “high-consequence areas” where Kinder Morgan will explore options to better protect the pipeline — potentially by making it thicker, burying it deeper and placing more frequent shut-off valves to minimize any spill.

Meanwhile, Kinder Morgan staff are scrambling to answer a blizzard of questions filed by intervenors, including 1,500 from the City of Burnaby alone.

Kinder Morgan vicepresident Scott Stoness said he’s hopeful the requested delay of the deadline for answers from June 4 to June 27 — if approved by the NEB — won’t push back later deadlines in the pipeline review process.

Intervenors would still have about two months to study the company’s responses before their next deadline for the second set of information requests in September.

“Our team has been working around the clock to answer every question within the scope of the NEB review thoughtfully and with care,” Stoness said, but said they can’t all be answered by the original deadline.

SCHOOL DISTRICT 43: Big changes: new superintendent, new DPAC head, another strike

School District 43 superintendent Tom Grant is calling it quits after seven years, saying it’s time to spend more time with grandchildren and perhaps take a winter holiday.

After 38 years as an educator, Grant said he will retire effective Dec. 31, giving the board enough time to find a replacement.

“I’m well beyond my due date,” said Grant, 63, who said the idea of retiring has been percolating for some months and the district’s current situation — with rotating teachers’ strikes, a lockout and difficult budget cuts — didn’t factor into his decision.

He said job satisfaction kept him in the post past the time most educators retire given his length of service and it’s time for a new leader.

“It was just such a wonderful place to be and a wonderful job at the time, I just kept going,”Grant told The TriCity News. “It’s time to get back into shape and look at all those personal opportunities out there.”

Board chair Melissa Hyndes said it won’t be that easy to replace Grant, who helped the district through some difficult times while also being a champion for education, getting new

TOM GRANT, SD43 SUPT. schools built or into construction, starting new programs and encouraging teachers’ professional development through learning teams.

“He’s an extremely passionate educator and we’re going to miss him greatly,”Hyndes said.

A search for Grant’s replacement will begin shortly, she said, noting the timing coincides with board elections this fall, which means SD43 could soon have new elected and appointed leaders.

Grant said he plans to spend more time with his three grandchildren, all under 10 years of age, and while the education outlook is uncertain here, Grant said SD43, with its high graduation rates, will continue to excel.

“I think our system is a terrific system and we’ve got wonderful people in it,” he said, “and at the end of it, were going to have to rely on relationships to go forward.”

Dennison new prez of DPAC A dad with a background in education is the new president of the Tri-Cities’ District Parent Advisory Council.

Chuck Dennison spent his first weekend in the new post at a BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils meeting hopeful that a teachers’ agreement will be ChUCk DeNNiSON reached. But he said he’s concerned underfunding is hurting education and he hopes to continue to raise parents’ concerns at the district level.

“The education system, as you know, has received fairly constant funding of the last several years but the costs have gone up so there is less money in the education system to accomplish the same things,”said Dennison, the father of a daughter in middle school.

Dennison said he first trained as an educator but left his high school teaching job to work in the private sector. His wife is an educator in the Surrey school district and said he understands the difficulties teachers face in the classroom.

To educate himself about current concerns, Dennison said he has attended every board meeting in recent months and attended district advisory groups. He replaces outgoing president Heidi Gable, who served six years on DPAC and who spoke at a recent parent rally of concerns about the impact of $13.4-million in job and program cuts on students.

In addition to day-long strikes taking place in districts across the province, a partial lockout has been implemented by the BC Public School Employers’ Association restricting paid hours teachers can work. That means extracurricular activities are not taking place in some schools and some field trips are being cancelled.

Grant said graduation ceremonies are still taking place at high schools, including ceremonies at Pinetree and Dr. Charles Best on the weekend.

To make sure they run smoothly, he said, elementary and middle school principals are helping.

Two of the Tri-Cities’ three mayors were expected to return home today (Wednesday) in the RV they drove to Niagara Falls last week.

Po r t C o q u i t l a m ’ s Greg Moore and Port Moody’s Mike Clay travelled through the northern U.S. on their Town Haul journey from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ convention that ended Sunday. ( C o q u i t l a m M ay o r Richard Stewart travelled with them on the way to Niagara but flew home early to attend his daughter’s graduation.)

Reached in North Dakota on Tuesday, Moore and Clay said their adventure through dozens of Canadian municipalities was a trip to remember and will be repeated for the next FCM convention in Edmonton, should they be re-elected in November.

Their cross-country jaunt was an especially good bonding experience. “I think it’s going to help the relationship with our three cities,” Moore said. “We are going to have some inside jokes now — things that friends share — because of this road trip.”

tions that are around, and it’s sometimes just connecting with our

colleagues — it doesn’t matter where they are — about finding those solu-

tions,”Moore said.

He said tours of recreation centres were especially useful as PoCo is about to embark on planning for a new rec complex. He cited the mayors’ visit to Dryden, Ont., which was the first town in Canada to have a solar-heated pool.

He said smaller towns are struggling financially with limited tax bases and have to be creative with funding capital projects. Many are partnering with senior governments, service groups and First Nations to build community services.

Meanwhile, PoMo’s Clay said he looks forward to becoming involved in a new Yellow Pages campaign called Shop the ’Hood, which was highlighted at FCM. “It seems like a really good initiative and the conversations are amazingly similar as you go across the country: We encourage people to shop local,”he said.

Clay said FCM delegates were interested in the Tri-City mayors’ Town Haul journey and wanted to talk about issues such as how Metro Vancouver cities are handling garbage and recycling collection, and water delivery. “These are things that we do very well and they know,” Clay said.

TransLink surplus won’t end hunt for new taxes

More cost cutting strengthened TransLink’s finances last year but officials say it’s a blip that doesn’t alter the need for new revenue sources to fund expansion in the face of Metro Vancouver’s growth.

The transportation authority reported a $36.8 million surplus for 2013 — boosting its reserve fund up to $126 million — at its annual general meeting last Wednesday.

But critics said the savings have come at a cost in reduced access to transit, including reduced SkyTrain frequency on weekends and ongoing bus service “optimization” that shifts resources from underperforming routes to others with unmet demand.

TransLink board chair Marcella Szel acknowledged the frustration already felt on congested transit lines and said directors are particularly concerned about the system’s ability to keep pace with demand, as 30,000 to 40,000 new residents arrive each year.

“There are communities being planned around transit and transit is not there,” Szel said,

TransLink’s administration costs climbed 15.5% last year to $28.2 million, mainly as a result of higher costs for technology, marketing and communications related to the Compass card project. Most of the transportation authority’s $1.4-billion annual budget goes directly to transit service.

TransLink officials say they’ll continue working to build demand on routes slated for rapid transit — such as the new 96 B-Line down King George Boulevard in Surrey — and will be prepared to launch an expansion swiftly if approved by voters in an expected referendum next year.

Szel said executive pay has been frozen at 2012 levels, all bo-

nuses have been eliminated and the number of executives across all branches of TransLink has been cut from 30 to 19 since 2009.

“We’re doing everything we can to provide continuity of the service we have today,” CEO Ian Jarvis said. “But saving your way to expansion is just not feasible.”

The various cuts — $14 million worth last year — were coupled with a continued search for new revenue on multiple fronts.

New fees were ap-

proved at previously free park-and-ride lots and strategies are being pursued to make developers pay more around transit stations and add more revenue-generating retail outlets. Jarvis said he’s even open to business proposals on naming rights for new stations to raise cash.

TransLink’s current plan counts on the sale of the Oakridge Transit Centre to generate more money for operations — something both Jarvis and Metro mayors agree is not financially responsible.

Metro Vancouver mayors meet June 12 to debate and perhaps unveil a plan for TransLink expansion and proposed new taxes to fund it.

If mayors sign off, it will be up to the province to decide if the package goes to a referendum of Metro voters.

Potential revenue options range from an annual vehicle levy to a regional sales tax.

Mayors council chair Richard Walton said he’s hoping for consensus and said a deal is close.

“It’s probably 99.8%,” Walton said, but added there’s critical wording still in flux.

“We don’t want to have a community that refuses to support it on grounds of four lines in it. It’s that level of detail we’re down to.” jnagel@blackpress.ca

New West will spend extra $100k on own Bailey bridge

New Westminster has found a Bailey bridge to replace the one that was closed in February.

Last week, the city announced it expects to have open by the end of June a one-lane replacement bridge to connect the Braid industrial area with United Boulevard in Coquitlam.

Th e r e p l a c e m e n t and its installation will cost New Westminster $175,000, said city engineer Jim Lowrie — that’s $100,000 more than the city expected to pay because it turned down an offer from Transportation Minister Todd Stone for a free bridge. (Even with the free bridge, New West would still have paid $75,000 to install it and relocate gas and water mains.)

Stone wrote a letter to Mayor Wayne Wright May 8 saying the city could have a bridge but he made the offer conditional on New West allowing a second one-lane temporary bridge to be installed beside it. New Westminster refused the offer.

“Our understanding was the minister’s offer was a final offer. We had asked for it to be reconsidered in light of the arbitration proceeding but as now we have yet to receive a response,” said Lowrie.

An arbitrator is due to make a binding ruling in July on the dispute between Coquitlam and New West. Coquitlam has repeatedly called for the crossing to be two lanes because it would benefit the movement of goods

and emergency vehicles.

But New West has resisted, its council maintaining that doubling lane capacity would increase congestion at the crowded Braid Street and Brunette Avenue intersection.

A call from The TriCity News to Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart was not returned by the print deadline.

The nearly 20-yearold bridge was closed in February when a structural assessment determined it was too weak

and couldn’t be fixed.

Lowrie said New West has been working with an Ontario manufacturer to find a replacement bridge. Some components are being shipped from back east but others have been found locally, he said, noting he’s hopeful the crossing will be open within two to three weeks. But those meetings have now ended. “There’s been no cohesion since then,” Cox said.

inder Morgan has a big job ahead of it to convince the public that its $5.4-billion oil pipeline twinning project is worth doing and won’t hurt parks, waterways and public property.

True, the company can win regulatory approval but without public acceptance, the project will struggle to get built.

Kinder Morgan must, therefore, work doubly hard to provide reasons it must change the routing for its project, which now is slated to go through at least three Metro Vancouver regional parks or greenways, and possibly Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Park east of Chilliwack.

Tri-City environmentalists are also concerned about a proposal to assemble the pipeline at Colony Farm Regional Park in Coquitlam, although the company says every effort will be made to minimize impacts and provide opportunities for habitat enhancement.

As well, to reduce construction hassles for drivers, the route has been changed from Lougheed Highway to United Boulevard in Coquitlam, requiring the twinned pipeline to cross into the Brunette River Conservation Area and along the Brunette Fraser Regional Greenway before reaching Burnaby Mountain.

The Brunette River, which runs through New Westminster on the border with Coquitlam, is a salmon enhancement success story and you can bet local stream stewards don’t want a heavy oil pipeline anywhere near there. The company says it has had success operating in other environmentally sensitive areas, with twinning projects in Jasper National Park and Mt. Robson Provincial Park, and can use this experience to protect fish habitat here.

This may be good news but what’s odd about this regulatory process is that the company still seems to be investigating its various options while at the same time justifying its plans through the National Energy Board — every change to routing seems like a Kinder surprise. While there may be sound reasons for these adjustments, and flexibility is good if its in response to practical and citizens’ concerns, the provisional nature of the process doesn’t inspire confidence.

The fate of B.C.’s farmland is a test for the parties BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA he BC Liberal government’s bill to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones has passed, after one of the nastier exchanges I’ve seen in a decade covering the B.C. legislature.

“You’re all a bunch of corrupt liars,”NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons yelled as the government cut off a long and mostly repetitious debate that dominated the final days of the legislature session.

Not to be outdone, cabinet minister Bill Bennett replied to Simons’ heckle about Kootenay rancher Faye Street, one of Bennett’s most vocal supporters as he pushed through changes to the land reserve to ease land use restrictions in rural zones.

Bennett advised Simons to offer his remarks to Street in person.“She’ll kick your ass,” Bennett said.

The on-the-record debate wasn’t much better.

Columbia River-Revelstoke NDP MLA Norm Macdonald summed up his party’s biggest objection with his charge that“a bunch of Liberal political hacks”will be appointed to regional panels of the Agricultural Land Commission.

The government’s scheme, Macdonald and other NDP critics predicted, is to unleash a flood of ALR land removals to enrich BC Liberal supporters by allowing development on productive farmland.

That might be a valid concern but there are a couple of factual problems. First, every appointment to the ALC, at the regional or provincial level, is made by the B.C. government.

It has been that way since the premier Dave Barrett’s NDP administration set it up in 1973.

Second, the regional panels are not new — the BC Liberals imposed them in 2003. If this was their method of corrupting the process to dismantle the ALR, that would have largely happened in the years since. Surely by this time, they would have found enough greedy

political hacks who hate farming to subvert the process.

I’ve written before about the legitimate concerns of places like Merritt and Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek, where some ALR rules and decisions simply don’t make sense.

Strict secondary residence rules are needed in areas with non-farm development pressure.

In most rural areas, they are a mistake and are frequently ignored.

The debate wasn’t entirely devoid of honesty and civility. Macdonald interrupted his string of baseless accusations to note that under the current system, 75% of exclusion applications in the Kootenay region are approved. If that’s the case, what is really broken that needs to be fixed? It’s a good question that the government did not adequately answer.

Credit also goes to the new agriculture minister, Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick, who inherited a public relations mess left by the brief and boneheaded performance of Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm.

Braving the heckling at the end, Letnick put aside his partisan talking points and gave

his personal assurance that the government’s intention is to support farming in those places where non-farm income is the only thing that keeps people on the land.

As soon as the theatrics had died down, the B.C. NDP sent out a fundraising plea to its members to help“save”the ALR. The party is broke and desperate after losing its fourth straight election, and it hopes to activate its declining donor base by portraying the changes as the imminent slaughter of its most sacred cow.

Voters have three years before the next election to assess this situation. If there is a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true.

If this does not take place, then the government’s position will be vindicated. We’ll find out the truth.

Off-leash dogs accost wildlife, people The Editor, Re. “Keep your dogs on leash on Coquitlam River trail” (Letters, The Tri-City News, May 30).

Coquitlam River trails once bounded with wildlife. Now, one is hard pressed to see a duck.

Dogs chase anything that moves and their owners allow it.

Where are the city bylaw officers? More signs saying “dogs on leash” are needed. When

are dog owners going to wake up and let the rest of us enjoy the wildlife?

I don’t walk nature trails to see their dog.

SCARY SWIM

The Editor, Having read Theresa Hendricks’ letter about hazardous confrontations with dogs and their owners on a public trail, I would like to say that

I, too, have encountered many such off-putting incidents while bike riding or running. There are a few breeds of dog owners who will always ignore park regulations, etiquette or safety concerns.

Lake perhaps 50 m from shore. Due to the low sun, I was breathing to one side only and, during the course of my swimming stroke, my hand suddenly came down on something furry away from my glance. Feeling

vulnerable in the middle of the lake and believing the fur to be a bear’s, I panicked somewhat.

I turned over, swam on my back away from the creature and saw it was a pit bull.

Despite the owner’s command from shore, the dog kept swimming towards me as I swam away on my back. The owner continued to call from shore and although it probably only took 30

seconds for the dog to finally obey, it seem like an eternity.

When the owner of an out-of-control dog frightens or endangers another person on a path, even though the owner might notice the other’s trepidation, it is so easy to say, “He’s really very friendly” and not give it another thought.

The Editor, Re. Picture This by Adrian Raeside (Opinion, The Tri-City News, May 28).

I am so appalled by the editorial cartoon in last Wednesday’s Tri-City News that I feel compelled to speak out. The cartoon depicts a parent asking a teacher if they are going to reimburse them for their time off to look after their children.

There is so much wrong with this sentiment that it is hard to know where to begin. First, schools are not babysitting services. I understand parents are sometimes put in difficult situations to find alternate care for their children or are required to change their own work schedules to accommodate the strikes.

But as a parent, your first concern should be the care and education of your children. Perhaps the sentiment would be more appropriately posed to the provincial government.

It is catastrophically despicable that we, as a nation, have given up the responsibility of educating our children and are

After receiving eviction notices, a last-ditch effort by cabin dwellers Belcarra cottage residents to speak to Metro Van ctte.

A group of residents facing eviction from their rental cottages in Belcarra Regional Park don’t plan on leaving quietly.

Despite receiving letters from Metro Vancouver Parks telling them they must vacate the seven rustic cabins

by June 30, the group is mustering a last-ditch effort to stay in the homes where they’ve lived for decades.

Jo Ledingham, a spokesperson for the Belcarra South Preservation Society, said she will go before Metro Vancouver’s Environment and Parks Committee tomorrow (Thursday) with a proposal to address concerns about liability and public access.

“It’s a cliffhanger for sure,”Ledingham said.

Ledingham, who has lived in the rental cabins since the 1970s, was given a letter from Mitch Sokalski, director of re-

gional, parks planning, policy and environment stating that the locks will be changed and the utilities cut off after June 30.

Ledingham said she hopes to convince the parks committee to extend the lease and allow the cabins to stay. The group says it could host special events for the public and make other improvements.

She said the group has Port Moody council’s support for placing the small, wood-heated cabins onto the city’s heritage registry and Belcarra village council wants the buildings, said to be significant for their historic and cultural values, to remain as well.

But Metro Vancouver wants to remove the cabins and eventually extend the park’s picnic area, although it intends to preserve an eighth building, Bole House, which was built by a noted Belcarra pioneer and judge.

Coquitlam RCMP has identified several crime hot spots as part of its most recent CompStat alert.

One neighbourhood, bounded by Austin Avenue, Delestre Avenue, North Road and Guilby Street, has seen an uptick in break-ins in residential underground parking lots. Thieves have been primarily targeting Hondas and Acuras from the 1990s, taking licence plates and other items.

Another area that has seen an increase in breakins is the Maillardville neighbourhood bounded

by Seguin Drive, Woolridge Street, King Edward Street and Lucille Star Way. In that area, police said, thieves have been breaking into businesses, gaining entry through smashed glass doors.

A third hot spot has been identified in Port Coquitlam between Lougheed Highway, Kingsway Avenue, Westwood Street and Hastings Street.

Thieves in this area have been breaking into business yards, gaining access to the sites by cutting through fencing. Police encourage business owners to install quality security systems and ensure their property is well lit with clear site lines from the street.

Looking for romance? Read paperbacks A GOOD READ

hile blockbuster romance novelists such as Nora Roberts and Jayne Ann Krantz have achieved great popularity, there is a substratum of other authors, whose works are frequently published as paperback originals, that produce the bulk of romance sales. (And in fact, romances are the fastest growing segment of the eBook market.)

Many of these authors structure their work in a series format and I want to talk about four of

these series.

Robyn Carr’s Virgin River series, with 20 titles, takes place in a small northern California community adjacent to prime mari-

juana growing country, which sometimes figures in the plots. Typically, the plot involves a new member of the community, a refugee from urban living or from life

itself, and frequently the heroes are military or ex-military. Themes are involved neighbours, self-sufficiency and overcoming personal obstacles. The first one is Virgin River, from 2007; my personal favourites are 2008’s A Virgin River Christmas and Paradise Valley from 2009.

Mary Balogh, who lives in Saskatchewan, writes Regency romances and has several series worth considering.

The Bedwyn Saga traces the romantic histories of the aristocratic Bedwyn siblings, a family headed by the Duke of Bewcastle. The characters of the siblings are

varied and memorable, and the plots, through straying far outside the boundaries of Regency morality (which is part of their charm), bring solid emotional satisfaction. The first one, published in 2002, is A Summer to Remember.

My favourite is the last one (from 2004), Slightly Dangerous, which sees the icily aloof and proper duke thawed by a completely unsuitable woman.

Susan Mallery’s Fools Gold series, with 17 books and counting, also takes place in a small California town and also employs extensively the conceit of strangers com-

ing to town and finding paradise — and love. But the denizens of Fools Gold are more sophisticated than those of Virgin River and have more complex characters.

Heritage and festivals celebrating it abound; and the mayor, seemingly, is actually a fairy godmother.The first book in the series from 2010 is Chasing Perfect while my favourite is this year’s When we Met. Serious themes including child abuse and grieving are balanced by humour, especially in the dialogue.

mances. In the contemporary Friday Harbor series, she combines themes like parenthood and sibling rivalry with upbeat humour, witty dialogue and a touch of the occult. The first one, Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor, was published in 2010, while 2013’s Crystal Cove is my favourite and has a stronger dose of the occult than any of the others.

Guide to Summer Activities Tips on enjoying a sun-safe summer VICTORIA - Savour the memories and have fun this summer with a few helpful tips on sun safety for Sun Awareness Week, June 2-8.

“We want families to be active and enjoy everything our province has to offer,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “However, when you’re swimming or playing soccer, it’s important to remember that the sunshine you’re enjoying can be quite harmful, and parents should make sure that they’re taking steps to protect themselves and their children.”

If you’re out in the afternoon hiking, biking or camping, be aware that the harmful rays of the sun are at their worst between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and protect your family accordingly. Wear sunscreen, protective gear, including a hat, and limit your exposure to the sun. Dermatologists strongly recommend a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection and a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Use a lip balm with SPF 30 as well. Remember, a tan is still skin damage and the same as a sunburn.

Teddy Bear Picnic Grand Parade Festival Coquitlam Society will be presenting the 25th annual Teddy Bear Picnic Grand Parade which will start in the RCMP parking lot roll down Burlington, Guildford, Town Centre Boulevard and up Pinetree Way on Sunday, June 8 at 10 a.m. This event marks the beginning of an exciting, fun filled day, as it precedes the opening of the Teddy Bear Picnic at Town Centre Park.

This year’s Grand Marshal of the parade is Malcolm Kennedy, Kinsmen Life member, multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Diamond Jubilee Medal recipient, and past chair of both the Festival Coquitlam and Operation Red Nose.

Entries in this year’s parade include marching bands, mascots, community youth groups, emergency services, dance groups, floats and more.

“The enthusiasm, community spirit and the willingness to give back to the community by participants involved in the parade is what keeps our volunteer committee involved in this event, as well as the other venues that Festival Coquitlam hosts over the summer” says Jeffrey Kennedy, Coquitlam Festival Society Chair.

Arts grads: Where are they now?

For the past three years, The Tri-City News has talked to more than a dozen recent high school graduates about their dreams of making it big in the arts. The interviews formed part of a series called Bright Young Things and highlighted the top creative students — in School District 43 as well as Archbishop Carney regional secondary — just as they were to leave for their post-secondary education around the world. Last month, The News caught up with six of the local grads featured to see how they are faring. And here’s what we got back from Jeff Huggins, Fiona McIntyre and Louise Hung, who also offered a few words of wisdom for this year’s grad class.

JEFF HUGGINS (GLENEAGLE)

When we last spoke with Jeff Huggins at his Coquitlam home, the musician, then 18, had a large piece of paper taped to his bedroom wall that mapped out his future goals.

Next to it was a letter of acceptance into the four-year music program at Vancouver Community College.

But that path was not meant to be.

After 18 months at VCC as a jazz/contemporary voice major, Huggins found his grades and passion for school slipping. He dropped out and took some time off early last year to figure out his next move.

“I had the itch to move away from home and start a life for myself but, because I didn’t have quite enough money, I started saving up by playing music down at Granville Island every day as a busker,”he wrote to The News in May. With his income not so stable, Huggins decided to pack his bags, say goodbye to his friends and family and buy a bus ticket to Montreal — with no permanent place to stay.

That’s when luck struck.

After a few days in town, Huggins found the

perfect apartment. Now, he’s learning French, exploring the city and earning his keep by busking in the metro subway. “I’m developing my musicianship and using the Grande Bibliotheque as my makeshift classroom or ‘Self-University.’”

He added, “I have been continuously inspired by art and my thirst for it has only grown after leaving home. Montreal is home to many interactive art installations, artists, musicians and more. Music has been, is and always will be the biggest mystery to me. It’s all about connection.”

Huggins is philosophical when he gives tips for this year’s graduates, saying, “You are the creator of your own reality. Find your passion and take action! Don’t spend your time living someone else’s life — even if you think you’re doing them a favour, you aren’t. Live your life and love yourself.”

FIONA MCINTYRE (HERITAGE)

A lot has happened for Fiona McIntyre since she was featured in The News three years ago.

Then, she was narrowing her choices to study musical theatre at an American university. Trained at Coquitlam’s Lindbjerg Academy of Performing Arts, McIntyre had letters of acceptance from Oklahoma City University, Randolph Academy, Wright State University, Pace University and Montclair State University.

McIntyre picked Montclair for her bachelor of fine arts degree — a New Jersey school that offered her a $9,000-per-year scholarship for four years — with an end goal to teach.

She has been cast in shows, workshops and a dance industrial that travelled to Miami. In 2012, McIntyre was named as a Top 20 finalist with fellow Lindbjerg triple threat Jennifer Gillis in CBC-TV’s Over the Rainbow.

Last month, McIntyre wrapped up her junior year — a year in which she performed in the university premiere of Take Flight, a new musical by Maltby and Shire. “It was such an exhilarating experience performing new material and having the chance to speak with the writers after they came to see the show.”

This summer, McIntyre will be playing Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Mary Amnesia in Nunsense and Spamalot at Papermill Theatre in New Hampshire. In September, she’ll return for her last semester of full-time classes before moving to the Big Apple to audition in front of casting directors, managers and agents.

McIntyre said the City of the Arts and Lindbjerg proved to be good training ground.

“When I’m struggling with challenges at school or going in for a really tough audition in New York, I remember the passion that Elaine [Lindbjerg] has for this art form and how she has encouraged me to find the joy in everything that I do.”

As for her words of encouragement for this year’s arts grads, McIntyre said, “Do the thing that makes you happiest. If you find that thing, your work will never seem like work.”

Under her guidance, Hung scored numerous awards including 10 Conservatory Canada medals of excellence for clinching the highest marks in B.C. for an exam: five for piano, three for theory and two for history.

In her Grade 12 year at Gleneagle, Hung clinched a $20,000 scholarship to attend the University of Victoria; she told The News she hoped to complete a music degree concurrently with a bachelor’s of arts in history.

Last month, she finished her second year at UVIC in the piano performance program; however, her dream for a double history degree didn’t pan out. “I realized that there were so many more music-specific courses, whether about history or not, that I would rather be taking for my electives,”she said.

Hung added, “I suppose, in general, I am always working to be a better musician by performing as much as I can, digging deeper into the structure and emotional subtleties of pieces, improving my technique and researching the historical background and origins of the music I interpret.”

Hung plans on a master’s degree in piano performance or a PhD in music history, with Europe following.

For this year’s grads, Hung imparts some words from UVIC voice professor Benjamin Butterfield: Do what you love and you will be rewarded.

“Personally, moving away from home and going to university, I realized how important it is to be honest to yourself about school, work, relationships and yourself,” Hung said. “Make decisions that will make you feel happy in ways that aren’t based on instant and temporary gratification. A successful first season Young musicians who joined the Coquitlam Youth Orchestra last September will end their inaugural year with a concert this weekend.

Conductor and artistic director Reg Quiring said the 65-plus musicians in the junior and senior ensembles — ranging in age from 10 to 18 and hailing from the Tri-Cities, Maple Ridge, Surrey and Burnaby — “have really improved over the past year, are more comfortable playing as a group and have a better appreciation for the music.”

And on Saturday, they will have a show at Coquitlam’s Evergreen Cultural Centre (1205 Pinetree Way) at 1 p.m. to display their hard work.

The juniors will play arrangements from Beethoven’s Egmont Overture,

Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 Minuet and Trio, the Harry Potter Suite and the Bach A-minor Concerto featuring concertmaster, Rachel Tuhten.

As well, the senior orchestra will handle Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8, Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, the Lord of the Rings Suite and the Lalo Cello Concerto featuring principal cellist Laura Chang.

Photographer, painter show the mystique

A new painting and photo exhibit looking at the various shapes, colours and textures in nature will launch tomorrow (Thursday) in Port Coquitlam.

The 17-year-old took first place in the 1500 m race with a 3:56.14 and followed up the performance with a second gold medal in the 3000 m race, which he won with 8:38.75.

The Port Coquitlam athlete has spent the last year in California, playing for Future College Prep and SFU coach James Blake said he is ready for the NCAA.

Since graduating from Archbishop Carney, Simon has been playing a prep school year with Future College Prep, experience that will be valuable in the NCAA, said SFU head coach James Blake.

“Our coaching staff really liked Patrick out of high school and we think his prep school year in Southern California really helped him understand the pace of the NCAA basketball,” he said. “Future College Prep played against future NBA prospects and high major Division I talent on a regular basis so he will not be intimidated by the speed of Division II basketball.”

During his prep year, Simon’s team went 73-11 including a win over the number one ranked team in the United States.

T h e 1 8 - y e a r- o l d stands at 6’8” and weighs 240 lbs. He also averaged nine points and 10 rebounds per game.

“I think I’m a very versatile player who is able to do it all,” he said.

“I can play at the three, four and the five spot.

I am very physical and aggressive player that will do my job as well as the little thing to us win games and be successful.”

The Simon Fraser University Clan men’s soccer team has added a Coquitlam product to its roster.

Michael North, who currently attends Archbishop Carney s e c o n d a r y i n Po r t Coquitlam, has committed to play for the team next season, an acquisition that Clan coach Alan Koch said already has an impressive soccer resume.

“He has the ability to make something out of nothing and I am excited to see how he adjusts to the college game,” Koch said. “His summer preparations will determine how prepared he is to make the step up to the NCAA level. I am looking forward to helping him develop as a footballer.”

Last season, with Mountain United’s under-17 squad, North scored 17 goals in 15 games. He has also spent two summers playing in Europe with the Whitecaps and played in Mexico with both the under-14 and under-15 provincial teams.
