Valedictorian Message

To the Grad Class of 2014

First and foremost a huge congratulations needs to be given to each and every one of our graduates for their hard work and dedication to seeing high school through to the end. For most of you this has been a 13 year journey of schooling, ECS through to grade 12. At an average of 7 hours per day, 200 days per year, you have spent approximately 12% of your life thus far in school. Be proud that all those years have added up to a high school diploma and a person who is ready to move on to the next phase in your life.

The grad class of 2014 also marks the very first graduating class of Ponoka Secondary Campus. Congratulations for living through 4 years of renovation, you came into grade 9 with our humanities wing boarded up and you leave with our welding, woods, and fine arts areas under construction. This class of graduates has proved to me how adaptable and flexible young people are. Thank you so much for sticking with us and remaining so positive throughout the experience that was your high school years. Thank you to for welcoming the grade 7 and 8 students into our building, you provided mentorship and a level head to our younger students while they provided all of you renewed energy.

When we think to each of you as we flip through the grad pictures and grad list we are thankful to have passed through each of your lives, some more than others; J and also thankful that such a diverse group of people has exhibited patience, understanding and tolerance of one another’s needs and personalities to come together as a cohesive group.

We wish each of you the very best in your future endeavors and once again, Congratulations to the 1st graduating class of Ponoka Secondary Campus!

If tests in math and history are important, it is just as essential that young people be able to judge what is true and what is false where drinking and driving are concerned. Getting a passing grade on this test might prevent a graduation formal from ending in tragedy:

1. DRINKING COFFEE ACCELERATES THE METABOLIZING AND ELIMINATION OF ALCOHOL FROM THE BODY.

FALSE. Time is the only factor in sobering up. Getting some fresh air, having a nap, or taking a cold shower aren’t any more effective than drinking coffee in eliminating alcohol.

2. ONLY 3 PERCENT OF ALCOHOL IS ELIMINATED THROUGH SWEAT.

TRUE. This means that busting some moves on the dance floor won’t help you sober up more quickly.

3. NO MATTER HOW MANY DRINKS ARE CONSUMED DURING AN EVENING, ALL YOU NEED TO DO TO BE SAFE IS TO STOP DRINKING AN HOUR BEFORE DRIVING.

FALSE. To respect allowable legal blood alcohol levels, it takes a lot longer than 60 minutes before being able to drive, especially if someone has been drinking for hours.
