1-day strike moved to Thursday

Teachers’ job action will close schools in SD5 on Thursday, June 5, ahead of Friday’s Pro-D Day SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff

The second day of the teachers’ strike in Southeast Kootenay has been moved from Friday, June 6 to Thursday, June 5.

Last Wednesday, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) announced that it would be going ahead with a second round of rotating oneday strikes in its ongoing dispute with the B.C.

government.

Originally, teachers in School District 5 (Southeast Kootenay) were scheduled to strike Friday. But when the BCTF realized that is a scheduled Professional Development Day, the strike was moved forward a day to Thursday, June 5, so that teachers could participate in scheduled workshops.

Elkford credit union employee stabbed in robbery attempt K AT E LYN D I N G M A N Fernie Free Press

An Elkford East Kootenay Community Credit Union (EKCCU) employee was taken to hospital and treated for a stab wound after an attempted robbery on Saturday morning.

The victim was stabbed in the leg during the incident and has since been treated and released from the hospital, RCMP Sergeant Will Thien said in a press release today.

Police say the suspect had already fled the scene when Elk Valley RCMP responded to the incident at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

“While the employee (victim) was opening up for business for the day, a male suspect

forced his way into the credit union,” Thien said.

After being told by the EKCCU employee that he could not access any money, the suspect left the credit branch.

“No money was taken,” Thien said.

The suspect is described as a 5’10” male, 40 to 50 years old, weighing between 160 and 170 lbs. The male was wearing rounded goggles with dark lenses, a black toque, black gloves, medium coloured jeans, black footwear and a red windbreaker jacket.

When pancakes and bikinis collide Cranbrook’s Danielle Cardozo will raise money for Special Olympics at a Stampede celebrity cookoff Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff

Cranbrook MasterChef Canada contestant Danielle Cardozo is back in the saddle, competing in a celebrity pancake cookoff during Calgary Stampede.

On July 5, Cardozo will face off against Nicole Gomes from Top Chef Canada, and Michael Noble from Iron Chef Japan in a pancake battle of epic proportions.

Battle Pancake will see each of the three reality television competitors prepare a signature pancake and handmade sausage, which will then be served to a crowd of 500 people during Stampede in Calgary.

It’s part of larger event called Bikini Espy, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Calgary.

A Calgary fashion boutique called the Espy Experience hosts the fundraiser during Stampede each year. Women of all ages and sizes are invited to line up outside the store in their bikinis and cowboy boots. With a donation to Special Olympics Calgary, they are each given a free outfit chosen by a fashion stylist. In 2013, the event raised more than $35,000.

Construction and additional beautification of the Clock Tower Square on Baker Street in Cranbrook is set to begin later this summer.

The project was identified as a 2014 capital project in recent Council budget deliberations and has been budgeted at $200,000, of which $150,000 was carried forward from 2013 and an additional $50,000 is coming from surplus.

Three designs were provided to Council and to the Downtown Business Association for review in 2013. The preferred design is being implemented.

“These changes will increase the value of our downtown area as an attractive place to visit and to experience a sense of community,” said Mayor Wayne Stetski.

The project includes the removal of the current brick walkways, which will be replaced with decorative concrete. The site will see a significant improvement with additional trees, shrubs, perennial planters, grassed areas and irrigation system, along with a drinking fountain. The Clock Tower Square will also see the installation of benches, some tables and garbage receptacles and also includes the installation of lights similar to those currently in place along 10th Avenue between Baker Street and 1st Street South.

ence. A conversation arose about Bikini Espy; one of my friends suggested that I should get involved with it, and it all snowballed from there. Megan came up with the genius idea of Battle Pancake. It was really just a case of being

in the right place at the right time, which lately seems to be a trend in my life.”

Cardozo’s two competitors each have their own reality TV experiences. Nicole Gomes placed third and was the last woman standing in

Top Chef Canada’s third season.

“She is incredibly talented, having apprenticed all over Europe and has worked some high ranking positions at some of the best restaurants in Canada,” said Cardozo.

Michael Noble competed in Iron Chef Japan against Iron Chef Morimoto, losing out by barely two points.

“For anyone who watches the show, they know it’s a big deal to get that close,” said Cardozo.

For Battle Pancake, the competitors will prepare a pancake breakfast for the bikini-clad women and others gathered at the event, who will ultimately decide which dish wins the day.

“Megan told myself, Gomes and Noble that our involvement has brought even more media attention to the event. That feels great and I hope it results in more money being raised. I am extremely proud to be a part of this event, and it has even inspired me to start thinking about how we can bring a great event like this to Cranbrook,” said Cardozo.

The chefs won’t be wearing bikinis, though Cardozo said she’d do it anyway. The event is sponsored by Mavi Jeans, which will provide outfits and custom denim aprons for the chefs.

“I will be totally honest: if the event required us to sport a bikini, I’d still be game,” said Cardozo.

“Professional Development is something that we fought hard for and lost days of pay for a long time ago. It’s a really important day for teachers to get together and plan for the kids so

we didn’t want to miss out on that.”

The one-day strike was not moved to further impact families.

“We are trying not to impact families. However, this one had to be done,” said Balfour. “We don’t want the kids to miss anymore at all – ever.”

Thursday’s strike will be the second time teachers have picketed as negotiations between the BCTF and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) break down.

In retaliation for the rotating one-day strike, the BCPSEA has initiated a partial lockout that prohibits teachers from

being on school grounds more than 45 minutes before and after class time, and at recess and lunch time.

Teachers have also had their pay docked by 10 per cent for the duration of the job action.

Those fab days of ‘67

Mike Turner recounts his epic hitch-hike from Kimberley to Expo ‘67 in Montreal Anthony Dr ansfeld For the Townsman

years ago right about now, Selkirk Secondary in Kimberley was abuzz with excitement.

The Selkirk band, under the tutelage of Ralph Yarwood, had been invited to perform at the World Exposition Fair — Expo ‘67 — in Montreal.

Kimberley rallied behind the Selkirk High band. Fundraisers were organized and voila, enough money was raised for the plane fare, meals and transportation at Expo.

Our Grad Class of ‘67 had also sewn the largest Canadian flag ever (measuring 300 feet by 180 feet). A story and photo called “Our great flag,” with all of us holding it, appeared in Time magazine on Page 3, May 2, 1967. I remember it was one giant sewing bee there in the gym.

Everyone at Selkirk High School knew that popular student and musician Mike Turner (known to many of us as M.T.) was going to hitch hike from Kimberley to Montreal to see his friends play.

The Selkirk band left for the airport in Cranbrook, with Mike Turner headed to Jim Bob’s (now the Husky) with his duffel bag taped with one word — EXPO. And the word circulated around school a few days later: “M.T. has made it to Montreal.”

We were thrilled.

Mike’s hitch-hiking feat indeed personified the Spirit of Canada in 1967, the year of our country’s 100th birthday.

In Mike’s own words: “I left Kimberley about one week ahead with the plan to be at the opening of Expo ‘67. I remember telling my mom that it took 37 rides to get to Montreal and it took six days to get there with a stopover at my aunt’s place at Bell’s Corners near Ottawa. One ride — the longest of all the rides going or coming back — was from Regina through

Kapuskasing, Ontario, and down to North Bay with a semi-tractor driver. For years I kept in touch at Christmas with that driver.

“Ontario generally was the worst province for getting long rides.

Ontario has such a massive land area with many small towns, so most folks were not going great distances. I do remember one bitterly cold night on a dark road near Iron Bridge, Ontario. After several hours with no rides, an Ontario Provincial Police officer stopped and gave me a ride to a better spot down the highway. My hitch-hiking fortunes changed almost right away.

“Also, another thing I do remember about the spring of 1967 — there was a horrific snow storm across the prairies. Ranchers lost hundreds of cattle in the deep snow. It was not ideal hitch-hiking conditions.

“Once I got to Montreal, I went to find the school band in Point Saint Charles. The band had been put up in a renovated bowling alley.

They had done a great job compartmentalizing sleeping areas in there and it was quite cozy. I watched the Selkirk High band play three times out of their five performances.

“Some days I hung out with my friend Ed McKenzie, who had a video camera. That video we shot would be gold today. Of course later on, Ed McKenzie and Guy and Randy Marchi formed the horn section of our band the Blue Velvet Brass, later the Brass, which we took on the road two years later.

“The nightlife around Expo and surrounding area was magical. There were many bands with the James Brown and Wilson Pickett style. Stookie (Ron Stocknow) and I closed a few of those bars down and walked back to base.

Entertaining, educational, great food and warm wonderful people. Going back to British Columbia took considerably more rides than the outbound trip.

It seemed like I was never going to get out of Ontario.

“As a hitch-hiker and Canadian, I gained a tremendous appreciation for the expanse and beauty of this country. It wasn’t until fairly recently I saw Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.” We held a pep rally at the Selkirk gym to welcome back our Selkirk band from Montreal and our “road warrior” Mike Turner, who had recently arrived back from his hitch-hiking journey. Our 1967 Class President, Joe Rokosh, called Mike up to the stage and presented him with Dr. Scholl’s foot powder, band-aids and other products to help M.T. on his next “road trip”.

There were many students from our ‘67 class who went on to be great citizens of Canada.

Here are but a few: Bill Graham’s daugh-

ter Judy (Rogers) was the manager of the City of Vancouver for many years. I saw her on TV when Jacques Rogge of the International Olympic Committee awarded Vancouver the 2010 Winter Games. Mr. Rogge called Judy up to the podium in Switzerland to accept. I was very proud of my 1967 grad classmate that day.

Craig Lytle is a doctor in Maple Ridge, B.C., and has been practicing there for 40 years. Dr. Lytle recently delivered his 9,000th baby. He is the quintessential family doctor. Craig’s dad Russ Lytle was a longtime Kimberley City Council man.

Rosanne Hedquist (Cox) has been living in San Francisco where Rosie is a manager for the Olympic Golf Club, a prestigious course located near Golden Gate Bridge. Rosanne is good friends with PGA golfer Freddy Couples.

Rosanne’s mom Rose taught Grade 1 and 2 to pretty much everyone in Kimberley.

Joe Rokosh is a world-class mining engineer and geologist.

Roky is based out of Panama where he “commutes” to the mining fields of the Andes in South America. Joey keeps his family cabin in Wasa and visits often.

Pam Kalnyiuk (P.K.) flew for Air Canada for 35 years and kept the family home in Kimberley. Pam has a Kimberley Alpine Resort ski pass and also is a Bootleg Gap golf member, and is a dyed in the wool Kootenay Ice supporter.

Ed McKenzie was a freelance writer and photographer for the Kimberley Daily Bulletin while we were at Selkirk. He went on to a career in BC Ferries. Ed, or “Scoop” as he was known in Kimberley, now is a motivational speaker and life coach with his wife here in B.C. and the U.S. Mike Turner (M.T.) has resided in Cranbrook for many years working for Global News, CBC TV and CBC Radio. Fittingly, his birthday is July 1 — Canada Day. Canada was a very special place to be in 1967.

More importantly, it’s time to start getting excited about the Summer Reading Club! Our awesome theme this year is Funny Business! Registration for the SRC starts on June 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cranbrook Public Library.

The Friends of the Cranbrook Public Library are always on the lookout for new and exciting ways to raise funds to benefit our library. Here is a new idea, a “Leftover Craft Supply Sale.”

Whether you do scrapbooking, quilting, knitting and crocheting or you use other material for your creations, it does not matter. All crafters are ending up with an overabundance of supplies and are wondering what to do with it.

Here is your chance to pass it on to someone else who would like to have it, while recovering some of your expenses in purchasing your supplies. You can also find little bits and pieces of material to give you new ideas or to buy just as much as you will need.

Once more into the breach “It is always incomprehensible to a man that a woman should ever refuse an offer of marriage.”

Jane Austin My friend George always claims that he never proposed to his wife, Felicity. In fact, he is not quite sure why he married her, but a shotgun was involved — his mother’s.

Harry grins and tells me that he laid down conditions concerning where they might spend the next few years before he actually popped the question to Jessica. Obviously, she went along with these complications, which involved going to live abroad.

Bonnie told me that her Will planned a trip into the Rockies with her on a bright sunny summer weekend. He’d purchased an expensive ring in preparation for the proposal but the weather broke; it rained buckets and so the two of them plighted their troth in his pick-up at the foot of the trail and, although she accepted readily enough, she didn’t really like the ring; they exchanged it later.

My own proposal of marriage in 1950 should have been simpler but fate stepped in. I popped the question; the lovely young lady said ‘yes’ and kissed me soundly but, as I found out later, she hadn’t heard the proposal.

Geoff had a similar problem. He tells me that he proposed by phone, long distance, but his young lady obviously didn’t hear. She said, “What are you saying, Geoffrey?” He had to go through the whole rigmarole again, as did I. In my case it wasn’t a bad line; it was one of those rubber bathing caps a lot of women wore whilst swimming, back in those days. Jean, called Jimmy, and I somehow or other ended up that weekend in Stratford–on-Avon and, at the moment of my proposal of marriage, swimming in the Avon River and Jimmy was wearing a bathing cap.

Anyway, after the trauma of that proposal and Peter we’d changed out of Warland after our swimsuits — Jimmy sneakily under her bicycle cape — we had wandered up the road and come to Anne Hathaway’s cottage. This home of William Shakespeare’s abandoned wife is a nauseatingly quaint tourist attraction, but I surged by.

For one thing, I, like most English school-boys, had been taught by teachers who were specially trained to make us hate all English authors, especially Shakespeare. With the war going full tilt, those teachers turned us into potential killing machines. An officer would be able to have us charge, screaming, into the face of the enemy merely by uttering something like, “Friends, Romans and countrymen, lend

me your ears.”

I was also concerned that Jimmy, after accepting my proposal of marriage and giving me a monstrous great kiss in order, I assumed to seal the bargain, had said not a word more about it. Women are mysterious, but her lack of reaction to the momentous occasion was disturbing. We moved on up the street, probably in search of a café where we could find sustenance without incurring poverty.

I also wasn’t sure why I’d popped the question. Jimmy and I had been rock-climbing, caving, mountaineering and hitch-hiking together for over a year and naturally, there had been a great deal of ‘snogging’ but marriage had never been on the agenda, as far as I was concerned. I couldn’t see why any woman would want to be tied to me. But, one weekend in the mountains of Wales, I was walking with an old friend when he turned to me and asked, ”When are you going to marry your Jimmy?”

I looked at him askance, which is hard to do when you are battling a nor-westerly gale and the rain is coming at you in buckets and you have the hood of your anorak up. Anyway, I shouted back that the idea hadn’t occurred to me; but it must have afterwards because, a couple of weeks later, I did pop the question.

And her ladyship hadn’t heard the right question so I was forced to have another go and was told, “Oh! Of course I will, silly.”

And that’s how I felt afterwards: silly.

Farmland fate a test for parties The B.C. Liberal government’s bill to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones has passed, after one of the nastier exchanges I’ve seen in a decade covering the B.C. legislature.

“You’re all a bunch of corrupt liars,” NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons yelled as the government cut off a long and mostly repetitious debate that dominated the final days of the legislature session.

Not to be outdone, cabinet minister Bill Bennett replied to Simons’ heckle about Kootenay rancher Faye Street, one of Bennett’s most vocal supporters as he pushed through changes to the land reserve to ease land use restrictions in rural zones.

Bennett advised Simons to offer his remarks to Street in person. “She’ll kick your ass,” Bennett said.

The on-the-record debate wasn’t much better.

Columbia River-Revelstoke NDP MLA Norm Macdonald summed up his party’s biggest objection with his charge that “a bunch of Liberal political hacks” will be appointed to regional panels of the Agricultural Land Commission.

The government’s scheme, Macdonald and other NDP critics predicted, is to unleash a flood of ALR land removals, to enrich B.C. Liberal supporters by allowing

development on productive farmland.

That might be a valid concern, but there are a couple of factual problems. First, every appointment to the ALC, at the regional or provincial level, is made by the B.C. government. It’s been that way since the Dave Barrett adBC Views ministration set it up in 1973.

Tom Second, the regional Fletcher panels are not new. The B.C. Liberals imposed them in 2003. If this was their method of corrupting the process to dismantle the ALR, that would have largely happened in the years since. Surely by this time they would have found enough greedy political hacks who hate farming to subvert the process.

I’ve written before about the legitimate concerns of places like Merritt and Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek, where some ALR rules and decisions simply don’t make sense.

Strict secondary residence rules are needed in areas with non-farm development pressure. In most rural areas, they are a mistake, and are frequently ignored.

The debate wasn’t entirely devoid of honesty and civility. Macdonald interrupted his string of baseless accusations to note that under the current system, 75 per cent of exclusion applications in the Kootenay region are approved. If that’s the case, what is really broken that needs to be

fixed? It’s a good question that the government did not adequately answer.

And credit also goes to the new agriculture minister, Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick, who inherited a public relations mess left by the brief and boneheaded performance of Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm.

Braving the heckling at the end, Letnick put aside his partisan talking points and gave his personal assurance that the government’s intention is to support farming in those places where non-farm income is the only thing that keeps people on the land.

As soon as the theatrics had died down, the B.C. NDP sent out a fundraising plea to its members to help “save” the ALR. The party is broke and desperate after losing its fourth straight election, and it hopes to activate its declining donor base by portraying the changes as the imminent slaughter of its most sacred cow.

Voters have three years before the next election to assess this situation. If there is a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true.

If this does not take place, then the government’s position will be vindicated.

We’ll find out the truth.

The search for a better banana

hile there are many staple fruits — apples, oranges, strawberries, etc — it is the banana that stands out the most, and the fruit I probably eat the most.

The simple banana is easy to take along anywhere you go.

Lately, though, I’ve been getting accustomed to red bananas, miniature bananas and other strange varieties. The days of the staple banana — known more formally as the Cavendish — most likely are numbered.

A fungus is causing problems in world banana supplies, where they grow in Africa, China and Australia. This fungus — known as the Panama disease — is causing the plants to wilt and rot. Despite its name, the Panama disease has not yet found its way to South American banana crops, which supply the North American market. But that point is likely approaching.

So the banana industry is trying to find an alternative, though a mysterious new banana that is resistant to the Panama disease is still either undiscovered or a closely guarded secret. Perhaps the new banana is already on the shelf, in the form of those red or miniature bananas. Maybe it will be

a plantain that comes with cooking instructions and a packet of sugar to get the right banana flavour.

It’s not the first time in history that the top banana has been superceded. Up until the 1950s, the Gros Michel, or Big Mike, was the main variety imported into the United States and Canada. But a relative of the disease currently decimating the Cavendish saw to the end of Big Mike in all but far removed places.

Today there are still people out there who cultivate the Gros Michel to get a chance to sample the banana which is described as a more “creamy and delicious” variation than the Cavendish.

In fact, back when the banana industry was looking for a Gros Michel replacement, they thought of the Cavendish as nothing more than a “garbage banana” not fit for consumption.

The banana industry was wrong about the Cavendish. The world forgot about the Big Mike in favour of the Cavendish.

Of course, the success of the Cavendish had a lot to do with a successful advertising campaign, one that highlighted the potential of a banana peel left discarded on the ground — the slippery potential.

And so the banana became a staple fruit — and the eternal reputation of a cause of

accidents to people and vehicles.

Was the Gros Michel remembered for its slippery qualities? I doubt it.

The end of the banana that fills up the fruit section at the grocery store is still likely a decade or two off, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t cherish it while it lasts. Even if it’s just for the laughs that come from someone having an unfortunate slip. The real question is: can one slip on a plantain or a miniature banana? Did anyone ever slip on a Gros Michel? They apparently did.

The banana peel slip was first reported back in 19th century Victorian England and likely started in the early days of cinema, as a more proper stand-in for the horse droppings that would’ve littered the cobblestone streets. So perhaps it was not the banana that had such slippery and embarrassing tendencies.

But back to the banana, if it’s on its way out in the next decade then I’m not going to be caught looking back longingly at the past banana. Instead I’m going to be sowing some banana seeds for the future — if only to keep a form of slapstick comedy alive.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. Khari Jones stepped in for a snap at B.C. Lions’ training camp on Monday morning and launched a tight spiral down the sideline reminiscent of his days as a CFL quarterback.

In some ways, it represented what the club’s new offensive co-ordinator hopes to accomplish in 2014.

Jones was hired this off-season to kickstart a Lions attack that had been criticized in recent years for being both predictable and conservative under Jacques Chapdelaine.

The club parted ways with its former offensive co-ordinator in November and handed the keys to Jones, whose aggressive philosophy as a player seems to have followed him into coaching.

It was one of two big off-season hires - Mark Washington was pro-

moted from defensive backs coach to defensive co-ordinator - and a move the Lions hope will help get them back to the Grey Cup. “I hope it’s a high-powered offence,” said Jones. “I hope it’s an offence where we can put points up on the board, because that’s what wins you football games, but a balanced offence as well. An offence that uses its weapons, and we have a lot of weapons on this team.

Lions head coach Mike Benevides said he expects Jones’ personality to be reflected in his play calling for a team that has not won a playoff game since its victory in the 2011 Grey Cup and will be feeling the pressure to perform with the big game set for Vancouver again this November.

“He’s going to find a lot of ways to get matchups and tempo and things like that - things he believes from the

quarterback position,” said Benevides. “He’s had enough experience as a player and as a coach to understand how you have to make sure you stay balanced, you attack and find ways to expose your athletes.”

Lions starting quarterback Travis Lulay said Jones wants his offence to be on the front foot in all aspects of the game, something the team didn’t always do last season.

“One of the big things and one of the first points of emphasis he says is we want to be aggressive,” said Lulay.

“We want to be aggressive when we’re running the football, we want to be aggressive when we’re throwing the football.

“We want to have a confident, fast-playing, high-tempo attitude and approach to the game. We don’t want to be passive, we don’t want to be back on our heels.”

Last week, the UBC Okanagan Heat team picked up Nick Schmidt from the Avalanche volleyball program, and now more of his former college teammates are joining him at the university level.

Brady Atwood, who just finished up his second year with the College of the Rockies, has signed on to play for the Grant MacEwan Griffins for the 2014-15 season.

Atwood, a left side and middle, put his big 6’ 4” frame to good use at the college level, and has the physical attributes to make an impact at the CIS level.

He studied university transfer courses during his tenure at COTR and will be working towards a bachelor in science at Grant McEwan.

his intensity and hard work. Like Atwood, Newman will also be working towards a bachelor of science after taking university transfer courses.

Kamps. “[The] College of the Rockies volleyball program continues to develop players to move onto CIS. The transferability of the programs and courses offered at the college helps these athletes and all students, easily move from college to universities throughout Western Canada.”

NHL teams got a final look at some of the top-end prospects, which included Kootenay Ice captain Sam Reinhart, at the scouting combine in Toronto this past weekend.

Scouts and management from all 30 teams were on hand to see the cream of the 2014 draft class undergo fitness testing and conduct player interviews.

It’s a process that isn’t unfamiliar to Reinhart, as his older brother, Griffin—a prospect with the New York Islanders—went through the same process two years ago.

Reinhart went in ranked as the third overall North American skater in the final Central Scouting report at the end of the season. Sam Bennett of the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL) holds down the top spot, with Barrie Colts (OHL) defenceman Aaron Ekblad the runner up.

While prospects can point to their body of work in their junior careers, the combine is also a final chance to make a positive impression on NHL teams during the interview process.

There’s no consensus on who will go first overall, but there is a core of five potential players who fit in that range, according to Dan

Marr, the director of central scouting.

But when it comes to Reinhart, there is definitely one attribute that sets him apart.

“Sam could be the smartest hockey IQ in this draft class,” Marr told NHL.com. “His hockey sense and his offensive hockey sense is exceptional. He’s one of the best at, when he’s given an opportunity to capitalize on it, so if you turn the puck over and you’re not careful, he’s going to burn you.

“And when he gets the chance to score, he’s a good scorer, but his vision, his anticipation, his hockey sense is what sets him apart from a lot of players.”

PARIS - For the first time in his career, Rafael Nadal will make a fifth straight appearance in the French Open quarterfinals.

Nadal won a record 32nd straight match at Roland Garros on Monday, beating Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 to improve on his own record by one.

Nadal is an eight-time French

Open champion with a 63-1 record on the red clay in Paris. His only loss came in the fourth round in 2009, when he was a four-time defending champion for the first time.

Another upset never seemed possible this time, despite complaints of pain in his back that slowed his serves in the previous round.

“I don’t want to talk too much about this thing today,” Nadal

said of his injury. “I have important match to come. Today I won a match in good shape. We’ll see what’s going on in the future.”

Playing on Court Philippe Chatrier, Nadal’s favourite court in the world, the top-seeded Spaniard controlled the match from the start. He then won 17 straight points to open the second set, taking a 4-0 lead before finally sending a backhand wide to make it 15-15 in the fifth game.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife of nearly 55 years has had a negative attitude for a long time, but it has gotten worse in the past few years. She has become very critical. For instance, she doesn’t care for a local hospital, and in social settings, she proceeds to warn everyone about a long list of grievances she has heard from a secondhand source. She ignores the fact that those to whom she is speaking are not interested in the information.

She endlessly criticizes all family members about everything they do, and not in a constructive way. Every communication includes her high-handed disapproval of their activities to the dismay of everyone within earshot. How can I stop these critiques of everyone and everything? -- Tired of Listening Dear Tired: Some people, as they get older, become more negative and critical. Often, they don’t realize it’s happening. We suggest you gently tell your wife that she is coming across as a bitter person and surely she wouldn’t want others to think ill of her. Perhaps you could work out a silent signal to let her know when her conversation is sliding into the dark side, so she can control it.

Dear Annie: If you want one of the most excruciating pains you’ll ever have, keep smoking. I did for 63 years. I led a physically active life and never thought I’d suffer such horrible ill effects.

Then one day out of the blue, doctors had to do emergency surgery on my right leg due to massive blood clots. After nine days of wondering whether I would ever walk again, I was released. My right foot and thigh are still partially numb, and walking is uncomfortable. Mind you, before that, I led an active, physical life. I’ve had multiple stents put in and an angioplasty. There are better things to do in life than lie in a hospital bed where the nurses come in at 4 a.m. to draw blood.

After my last bout with my leg, I finally kicked the butt habit. It’s been six months, and the smell of cigarette smoke now nauseates me. I never realized how bad it smelled to others. I burned up many thousands of dollars on cigarettes over the years. I was addicted, but thankfully I can live without cigarettes now, although I still get the urge -- but all I need is the reminder of the pain in my leg and the fear of having it amputated.

Friends and family had urged me to stop for years, but I didn’t listen. It took an event of terrible pain to make me pay attention.

If you’re young, don’t start. If you’re already a smoker, save yourself the inevitable and quit. -- Pt. Charlotte, Fla. Dear Florida: The addiction to nicotine is tough to break, which is why giving up cigarettes can be so difficult. There are plenty of programs to help (try the National Cancer Institute at smokefree.gov or the American Cancer Society at cancer.org). We are glad you finally quit, and we hope others won’t wait until they are in the hospital -- or worse.

Dear Annie: Instead of telling “Grossed Out” to contact the health department, she should first speak to the owner immediately. As a restaurant owner myself, I definitely would want to know if an employee was licking her fingers when serving ice cream.

It’s unlikely the employee would show her offenses during an inspection.

Since “Grossed” is concerned that the owner might retaliate, maybe she could simply ask the employee, “Aren’t you supposed to wear gloves?” According to the standards set by the health department, all employees must wear gloves when prepping, cooking or handling food.

Obituaries Katherine Duchscherer 1921 - 2014

It is with great sadness that the family of Katherine Duchscherer announces her peaceful passing on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the F. W. Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook at 92 years of age .

Katherine was born on the homestead farm near Fox Valley, Saskatchewan on August 29, 1921. She worked a the Prelate Hospital for many years. This is where she met Alexander Duchscherer. They were married November 9, 1944. They resided in Prelate, Maple Creek, Piapot, Tompkins, Webb and Swift Current.

Katherine moved to Cranbrook with her family in 1972, where she remained her until her passing. Katherine was a very happy and dedicated woman and she loved her family very much.

Katherine is survived by her children Josephine (Gordon) of Cranbrook, BC; Ivin (Kathy) of Kimberley, BC; Norman (Brenda) of Medicine Hat, AB; Stan (Nan) of Cranbrook, BC; Brian (Debbie) of Creston, BC; Earl (Terry) of Cranbrook, BC; Shirley (Len) of Cranbrook, BC; and Dale (Arlene) of Cranbrook, BC; son-in-law Andre of Medicine Hat, AB; as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband Alex on July 21, 1972 and her daughter Victoria on January 29, 2010.

Prayers with a visitation for Katherine will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass for Katherine will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic Church in Cranbrook at 2:00 pm.

Parents warned of grad party dangers Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. government is sticking to education to keep grad parties safe this spring, rather than increasing penalties for “party bus” companies.

Officials are more concerned about under-aged drinking at house parties and bush parties than alcohol served in limousines and buses that have become a popular way for young people to go out on the town.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone said party bus operators have been reminded that no open liquor is allowed in any vehicle, and inspections will continue with violators risking loss of their licences.

Party bus operators have changed their websites and advertising to emphasize that no drinking is allowed on board.

ty event in Victoria, RCMP and ICBC representatives stressed that there are grad-related fatalities every spring, and the problem extends to adult-sanctioned parties.

Inspector Ted Emanuels, officer in charge of the B.C. RCMP’s enhanced traffic services, said any event or transportation where alcohol is served to minors is not a safe grad.

“The misuse and abuse of drugs and alcohol are the underlying factor in grad events where the police get involved, including physical assault, sexual assault, fights and accidental injuries,” Emanuel said.

“We know from experience that bad things happen to good kids in these environments. There are also criminal and civil liabilities that you need to be aware of.”

On average, there are four teens killed in

graduation-related vehicle incidents each year in B.C., with another 1,140 injured.

Jill Blacklock, ICBC’s road safety manager, said parents need to discuss transportation plans with teens before every event they go to, giving them more than one option.

Programming taxi numbers into their phones and checking transit schedules before they go out are recommended.

After grad is over, the summer ahead is a time of parties that need the same kind of planning, Blacklock said.

Emanuels said one of the most difficult jobs in policing is knocking on somebody’s door in the middle of the night to report a fatality.

“Answering that door is worse,” he said.

“Our objective is that your kids wake you up at four in the morning and not us.”

Toronto-area couple reunited with $50M lottery ticket lost at church C ANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — A Toronto-area couple endured a roller-coaster ride of emotions when a lottery ticket worth $50 million went missing only to be found and returned by a person at their church.

Hakeem Nosiru won the Jan. 17 Lotto Max draw and was one day away from claiming the money when the ticket, which he duct-taped to the inside of his wife’s purse for safekeeping, was missing after they attended church.

That sparked a frantic search of their Brampton home, with garbage bins being upended and

their contents picked through piece by piece, an effort that left Nosiru and his wife empty handed and feeling “miserable.’’

But that despair turned to joy after a fellow member of the congregation discovered the ticket and reunited it with them on April 1 — saying “April fools’’ — a return made possible because Nosiru signed the ticket with their address.

But the saga wasn’t over yet, as Nosiru gave the ticket to Ontario Provincial Police, who were investigating the matter for Ontario Lottery and Gaming to ensure there were no further snags.

Everything checked out and

Nosiru and his wife Abiola were beaming for the cameras at the OLG prize centre Monday, telling reporters they were planning on travelling the world and helping out their family.

Abiola Nosiru said that when she realized her husband’s winning ticket had disappeared from her purse “I had a fly in my stomach and I couldn’t sleep for days.

I couldn’t eat. I was devastated.’’

“We just wanted to see the reality. And the reality is right here now,’’ she said, fighting back tears.

She wasn’t sure what they’ll do for the woman who ended the ticket’s exodus, but told her “I just want to say thank you.’’

Excitable puppy drives owner’s car into pond ASSOCIATED PRESS

CANTON, Mass. — After going for a walk, a German shepherd puppy owned by a Massachusetts man decided to go for a drive — straight into a pond.

John Costello tells WFXT-TV that his 12-week-old puppy,

Rosie, was so excited Sunday after going for a walk at Bolivar Pond in Canton that she jumped in his running car, hit the gear stick and shifted into drive, before falling onto the gas pedal and sending the car careening into the water.

A couple of passers-by saw the

commotion and helped Costello rescue Rosie. Nobody was injured, but Costello says the Dodge Neon is a total loss.

The 911 call surprised even police. Officer Robert Quirk says he has never heard of a dog driving into a pond.
