Greater Trail parents stepped out in support of teachers Monday, rallying for a negotiated deal at various schools in the district. A group joined teachers on the picket lines outside Rossland Summit School, Webster Elementary and Glenmerry Elementary schools holding signs of discontent and support. At J.L. Crowe Secondary School, grandparents and parents of students stopped by to lend their support, and local firemen made rounds with water and sustenance for the picketers. Honks from passing vehicles along the highway could be heard throughout the day, said Crowe teacher Terry Jones. “We really appreciate the support and

“The current funding is not working and the government needs to make education of our children a priority.” The former executive member of the MacLean Parent Advisory Council is actively involved in her son Jesse’s education, volunteering in the classroom and lunch store occasionally, too. She’s hoping the government will take note that their constituents are not pleased with the current education funding and wants teachers to know that they are not in this alone. Students are also beginning to raise their voices after being caught in the middle of the dispute. More than 10,000 people have RSVP’d to a Facebook event staging a provincewide student walkout in protest of being “caught in the middle” of British Columbia’s ongoing teachers’ dispute. Spring weather signals bear season in the Kootenays and that means that any food scraps, particularly bones and scraps leftover from barbecues, are almost a guaranteed lure for bringing in the bears, famished from a long winter’s rest. The City of Trail is once again joining forces with Natural Control Alternatives Society (NCA) to provide bear-proof bins for people to dispose of bear attractants that they don’t want to have in or near their houses until garbage day. One of the bins will again be located at the city public works yard, in Glenmerry, but the second will be positioned in a new location, at the end of Hazelwood Drive, in Sunningdale, near the city’s pump house. “We decided to change the location of the second bin this year for a number of reasons,” said Andrea Jolly, communications and event coordinator for the city. “The location last year, near the bocce pit at the end of Rossland Avenue, was isolated and it was hard to manage security. We had some incidences of people trying to break in to the bin to steal the toonies. It also gives other residents an opportunity to have the bins near their residences and, yes, there are more bears along the river in Sunningdale than there were near the bocce pits.” The bins will, once again, operate on an honour system where residents are asked to donate $2 in the collection box on the bin for each full-size bag of garbage they deposit. The funds collected will help contribute to the purchase and maintenance costs, as well as the costs for Alpine Disposal and Recycling to empty the containers. “As responsible residents, it’s important we dispose of our garbage properly,” Ernie Millin, NCA organizer, said in a media release. “We share this area with bears and other wildlife; reducing the temptation for bears to visit our neighbourhood is the best way to keep everyone and the bears safe.”

Lower Mainland student and walkout organizer Victoria Barker says she’s mobilizing students to take their own stand rather than be used like pawns between two divorcing parents. The 18 year old says she’s been affected by job action throughout her entire schooling history and she and others are angry and frustrated that both the government and teachers are willing to put their education in jeopardy. Over the weekend, more than 100 parents gathered in Richmond, for the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils annual general meeting, where exasperation and rising fatigue were evident over hampered contract talks and the teachers’ jobs action. “A parents’ strike? I don’t know. All I can say is the bear is stirring,” said Terry Berting, president of the confederation on Friday.

“We, deep down, are approaching a tipping point where perhaps parents are going to have to do something on our own if this doesn’t get settled soon.” The conference kicked off with a keynote address from Education Minister Peter Fassbender, who told parents he’s committed to a resolution that’s good for everyone. But he said a solution must be achieved within the reality of economic constraints. “I stand before you believing that teachers deserve a raise, teachers deserve stability,” he said. “But you know what? Communities deserve that as well. And the government has a responsibility to taxpayers and finding that balance.” The B.C. Teachers’ Federation has demanded a four-year teacher contract with a 10.75 per cent wage increase, plus 2.75 per cent cost of living increase, a return to the class size and composition rules last seen in 2001, and an increase in the number of specialty teachers hired in B.C. districts. Music will be a new element at the Trail Market on the Esplanade this year. Live Cuban music will be kickstarting this season off on Friday. The band is from Santiago de Cuba and is touring around B.C. this year and requested a busking spot at the first Trail Market. “We were ecstatic to receive the request” said Norm Casler, executive director of the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce and Market Committee member. “Live entertainment at the market is just one of the things that make it so great, and to have such a brilliant and talented musical group offer their time for our event is very exciting.” Sweet sounds will become a regular thing at the market and it’s still accepting applicants who

are interested in performing and wanting to show off their musical talent. “It’s the perfect addition to the market,” continued Casler. “Market-goers can enjoy the musical sounds of Cuba while shopping and strolling along the picturesque Esplanade. “We hope to encourage other musical talents in the area to sign up for a busking spot at one of the upcoming markets.” This year, wide varieties of vendors will be there and an abundance of arts and crafts will be brimming the market. The market will occur every second Friday at 10 a.m.-2 p.m. from June 6 to Oct.10. Vendors and entertainment spots are still available and can be booked by calling the Trail and District Chamber of Commerce at 250-368-3144. John Horgan, recently acclaimed leader of the NDP provincial opposition, made a Castlegar stop on Monday, meeting with picketing teachers and parents along 7th Avenue, where Twin Rivers Elementary, Castlegar Primary and Stanley Humphries Secondary are located. Horgan and his entourage which included area NDP MLA’s Katrine Conroy and Michelle Mungall, had been in Nelson earlier in the day, and had a trip to the Waneta Dam coming up after Castlegar. Horgan addressed the crowd of about 30, beginning with personal background relating to his high opinion of the school system. “When I was in high school I was off the rails,” he said. “I was raised by a single mother, my dad dies when I was a tot. I understand poverty, and I was going in the wrong direction. It was a public education teacher who got me back on track, and changed my life. Now I stand before you, I have a Master’s degree… and I’m going to be the Premier of B.C. and it’s because of public education.”

In an interview with the Castlegar News, Horgan pointed a finger directly at the current government and the premier. “The Liberal government, since 2002 when Christy Clark was the Minister of Education, has bargained unfairly,” Horgan said. “They tried to provoke a strike so they could legislate people back to work, and they stripped contracts on issues like class size and class composition. “They had an obligation in this round of bargaining to put those issues on the table and put money on the table as well. When a government says they don’t have enough money for this, they’re saying it’s not a priority, and I think for most British Columbians it is. If we’re not as educated as we can be, we’re not going to be able to compete in the modern economy.” Asked how an NDP government would differ in a situation like collective bargaining with teachers, Horgan concluded, “Get back to the bargaining table…get off the front pages… get off the six o’clock news and negotiate fairly. Give respect and respect will come back to you.”

The B.C. government is sticking to education to keep grad parties safe this spring, rather than increasing penalties for “party bus” companies. Officials are more concerned about under-aged drinking at house parties and bush parties than alcohol served in limousines and buses that have become a popular way for young

people to go out on the town. At a graduation safety event in Victoria, RCMP and ICBC reps stressed that there are gradrelated fatalities every spring, and the problem extends to adultsanctioned parties. Inspector Ted Emanuels, officer in charge of the B.C. RCMP’s enhanced traffic services, said any event or transportation where alcohol is served to minors is not a safe grad. “The misuse and abuse of drugs and alcohol are the underlying factor in grad events where the police get involved, including physical assault, sexual

assault, fights and accidental injuries,” Emanuel said. “We know from experience that bad things happen to good kids in these environments. There are also criminal and civil liabilities that you need to be aware of.” On average, there are four teens killed in graduation-related vehicle incidents each year in B.C., with another 1,140 injured. Jill Blacklock, ICBC’s road safety manager, said parents need to discuss transportation plans with teens before every event they go to, giving them more

than one option. Programming taxi numbers into their phones and checking transit schedules before they go out are recommended. After grad is over, the summer ahead is a time of parties that need the same kind of planning, Blacklock said. Emanuels said one of the most difficult jobs in policing is knocking on somebody’s door in the middle of the night to report a fatality. “Answering that door is worse,” he said. “Our objective is that your kids wake you up at four in the morning and not us.”

LRB to rule on pay cut

The Surrey North Delta Leader The B.C. government is not planning to legislate a settlement to the latest teacher strike, which is shutting down schools in each district again this week. Delta public schools were closed Monday, while Surrey’s are expected to be behind pickets Tuesday. Education Minister Peter Fassbender said last week the government is looking for movement from the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) on its wage and benefit demands, but isn’t going to impose another contract extension on the union. The legislature adjourned for the summer on Thursday. “To rush to legislation is not where we’re going to go,” Fassbender said. “We want the BCTF to come to the table with a wage response that is reasonable and within the zone of other pub-

lic sector unions. We expect them to come with something that is affordable for taxpayers.” Lockout provisions were announced by the government last month to mirror union work hour restrictions that started in April. The BCTF was at the Labour Relations Board (LRB) last week, arguing the province doesn’t have the right to dock teachers’ pay by 10 per cent. Government argued teachers can’t be expected to be paid for work they’re not doing during job action, while the union says the government is trying to provoke a full-scale strike. The pay cut is saving the government more than $1 million per day. The rotating strike is also saving another $16.5 million per week because teachers aren’t paid for the days they are on strike. A ruling from the LRB is expected Wednesday afternoon.

Tug boat crews take strike vote THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - The union representing tugboat crews in ports across B.C. says members will hold a strike vote Tuesday as Seaspan threatens to impose changes to a collective agreement. Terry Engler, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse union, Local 400, says the company is set to make 46 changes to the contract next week. He says the local has not been on strike since it was formed in the 1950s and any job action resulting from what he calls Seaspan’s confrontational approach could cripple operations at Port Metro Vancouver. Engler says Seaspan tugs do most of the work on the waterfront, assisting freighters, tankers and other vessels docking and leaving port.

Nude beach-goers bummed out by closure By Joe Fries

Sun-seekers who frequent Penticton’s only nude beach have been forced to cover up, after the property owner hired a security guard and installed No Trespassing signs to keep people away. Dustin Wolchina, who spoke to reporters Saturday on behalf of beachgoers, said access to the clothing-optional portion of Three Mile Beach was cut off earlier this week after someone caused problems while the property owner was showing the site to a potential buyer. The troublemaker is not a regular beach user, Wolchina added. “Everybody is friendly. It’s a good, large community. Everybody talks to everybody, and we’ve never had any real problems with anything, other than a few people causing the odd little tiff here and there over a spot or stuff like that,” he said. Now his group, which he says has maintained and improved the beach area for decades, is without a place to enjoy the sun in their birthday suits. The users also maintain that the beach itself is Crown land and therefore public, while only the steep cliffs and bench land above are private. However, local realtor Kirk Chamberlain, who spoke on behalf of the unidentified owner, said the property line extends to the high-water mark and therefore includes nearly the entire beach. The seven-hectare property is listed for $3 million. Two-thirds of it is planted with grapes, while the site also boasts 260 metres of beachfront, according to an online advertisement.

Many pipes still frozen THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - The air conditioners are whirring in Winnipeg with temperatures recently soaring above 30 C, but below the ground it’s a different story. Hundreds of residents still have frozen water pipes. M a t t h e w Lawrence and his family lost water almost two months ago when BRIEFS their home’s pipes froze. They were still unthawed late last week, even as the Manitoba capital was Canada’s hot spot at 32 C. “It’s amazing. It feels like the tropics and we still have frozen water pipes,” Lawrence said. “To have it this hot and still be thinking there are frozen pipes underneath the ground is just kind of mind-boggling.” Lawrence, his wife and three children have been relying on his neighbour, who has allowed them to tap into his water supply. But now, Lawrence said, his neighbour’s house is up for sale and it’s unclear how long that setup might last. The city says there are still around 400 properties that have frozen pipes and many of them are relying on neighbours for water. That’s down from around 1,200 properties in March.

No comment on cop pay THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Ontario is the only province paying suspended police officers millions of dollars every year but, despite acknowledging widespread concern, none of the main party leaders is pledging to change the law if they win the June 12 election. Premier Kathleen Wynne refused point blank to take a stand on the issue, saying a campaign is not the time to talk about it. “I’m not going to weigh in on that at this point,” Wynne said. Ontario mandates full pay for suspended officers - in some cases even post-conviction - despite years of protests from police chiefs. Other provinces grant the chiefs partial or complete discretion to suspend an officer without pay. Both the Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats say they recognize voter unhappiness with the status quo. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and Tory Leader Tim Hudak would only offer to sit down with the parties to discuss the issue if they’re elected.

Few benefits from crude THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - A new report says proposals to pipe oilsands crude to Quebec refineries would only deliver negligible economic benefits to the province. An economist who co-authored the study says job creation and spinoffs from several active pipeline-and-processing proposals would be insignificant to Quebec’s overall economy. At the same time, Brigid Rowan says a pipeline accident could cost lives and put taxpayers on the hook for billions of dollars - particularly if a spill takes place in an urban area like Toronto or Montreal. The study examined possible economic advantages of the Energy East pipeline project by TransCanada Corp., a plan by Suncor Energy Inc. to enable its Montreal refinery to process thick oilsands bitumen and the Line 9 reversal by Enbridge.

THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA, Ont. There’s no business like grow business. Health Canada is struggling to process a mountain of applications for licences to grow medical marijuana as the country experiences a “greenrush” of firms wanting to grab a piece of the coming boom. The department had received 858 applications as of late last month, and new ones were coming in the door at an average of 25 a week. The application frenzy has drawn basement growers, wellheeled entrepreneurs with pharmacy expertise and even strug-

gling junior mining firms trying to find a lucrative new business line. Health Canada radically changed the rules for medical marijuana on April 1, moving approved production from a cottage industry of thousands of loosely regulated growers to a commercially competitive sector, with an anticipated 50 larger companies shipping high-quality weed in dozens of strains. Prices are being set by the free market, and Health Canada is imposing no limit on the number of sanctioned indoor weed farms, as long as they can pass regulatory

muster. Officials began accepting applications for grow licences a year ago, but the initial trickle of forms has turned into a torrent. In September, Health Canada was sorting through 156 applications - but the number tripled by February this year and then doubled in just the next three months. So far, only 13 licenced suppliers have made it to the finish line, listed on the department’s website as authorized marijuana sources for patients who have their doctor’s approval to use cannabis for pain and other symptoms.

Robocall trial underway THE CANADIAN PRESS GUELPH, Ont. - A Conservative staffer charged with election fraud was overheard discussing underhanded tactics to sway the vote, but wasn’t taken seriously, a fellow campaign worker testified Monday. The so-called robocalls trial for Michael Sona, 25, who is charged with “wilfully preventing or endeavouring to prevent an elector from voting,” got underway Monday in Guelph, Ont. Court heard that on May 2, 2011, automated calls were made to more than 6,700 phone numbers, mostly in Guelph, informing them that their polling station for the 2011 federal election had been relocated. Crown lawyers began the trial Monday by saying several witnesses will testify that Sona orchestrated a campaign to divert voters from their proper polling stations. Chris Crawford, who worked as campaign chairman for local Conservative candidate Marty Burke, told court that he recalled overhearing a conversation between Sona and another worker late one night in Burke’s campaign office in the weeks leading up to

the election. At first, Crawford said he didn’t recall specifics from the conversation - just that Sona was talking about how underhanded tactics were a common feature of election battles in the U.S. “It was very general - it wasn’t specific techniques, it was a general conversation,” Crawford said under questioning by the Crown. “Sometimes you

get conversations like this, people speaking off the cuff, no one really thinks anything of it.” After reviewing a statement he gave to Elections Canada investigators back in March 2012, however, Crawford became more specific. “He mentioned about calling Liberal supporters late at night, like 11 o’clock, to make them mad, that type of thing,” she added.

Meanwhile, business newcomers say they’re frustrated by the inability of Health Canada to process their applications in a timely way, as their leased grow-space gathers dust and their investors become impatient. “They’re really an unfortunate bureaucracy under siege,” says Umar Syed, president of d CannMart Inc., which has been patiently waiting for a distribution licence since October. “They’re dealing with a situation they weren’t prepared for. ... there’s something really out of whack.” Syed, with a background as a clinical pharmacist, has had previous positive dealings with Health Canada. But he says the underfunded agency is suddenly struggling with a “tsunami” of applications, leaving his company and others in limbo. “We’re all dressed up and nowhere to go.” Syed’s comments echo those of other applicants, who declined to go on the record for fear of jeop-

ardizing their chance at a licence. “They keep moving the goal posts,” one West Coast-based applicant said of Health Canada’s evolving review process. The new regime has also been hit with two curve balls: a British Columbia court injunction in March that allows medical users accredited under the old system to continue to use homegrown pot for now; and two recent recalls of medical marijuana from licenced companies producing under the new system, for reasons of quality. A spokeswoman for Health Canada did not respond directly to questions about the department’s ability to handle the massive influx of licence applications. But Sara Lauer said of the 858 received as of May 20, 370 were returned as incomplete, 149 were refused and 30 withdrawn. That still leaves 289 applications stacked in the department’s inbox for review, which is time-consuming.

Farmland fate will be a test for parties

he B.C. Liberal government’s bill to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones has passed, after one of the nastier exchanges I’ve seen in a decade covering the B.C. legislature. “You’re all a bunch of corrupt liars,” NDP agriculture critic Nicholas Simons yelled as the government cut off a long and mostly repetitious debate that dominated the final days of the legislature session. Not to be outdone, cabinet minister Bill Bennett replied to Simons’ heckle about Kootenay rancher Faye Street, one of Bennett’s most vocal supporters as he pushed through changes to the land reserve to ease land use restrictions in rural zones. Bennett advised Simons to offer his remarks to Street in person. “She’ll kick your ass,” Bennett said. The on-the-record debate wasn’t much bet-

ter. Columbia RiverRevelstoke NDP MLA Norm Macdonald summed up his party’s biggest objection with his charge that “a bunch of Liberal political hacks” will be appointed to regional panels of the Agricultural Land Commission. The government’s scheme, Macdonald and other NDP critics predicted, is to unleash a flood of ALR land removals, to enrich B.C. Liberal supporters by allowing development on productive farmland. That might be a valid concern, but there are a couple of factual problems. First, every appointment to the ALC, at the regional or provincial level, is made by the B.C. government. It’s been that way since the Dave Barrett administration set it up in 1973. Second, the regional panels are not new. The B.C. Liberals imposed them in 2003. If this was their method of cor-

rupting the process to dismantle the ALR, that would have largely happened in the years since. Surely by this time they would have found enough greedy political hacks who hate farming to subvert the process. I’ve written before about the legitimate concerns of places like Merritt and Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek, where some ALR rules and decisions simply don’t make sense. Strict secondary residence rules are needed in areas with non-farm development pressure. In

most rural areas, they are a mistake, and are frequently ignored. The debate wasn’t entirely devoid of honesty and civility. Macdonald interrupted his string of baseless accusations to note that under the current system, 75 per cent of exclusion applications in the Kootenay region are approved. If that’s the case, what is really broken that needs to be fixed? It’s a good question that the government did not adequately answer. And credit also goes to the new agriculture minister, Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick, who inherited a public relations mess left by the brief and boneheaded performance of Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm. Braving the heckling at the end, Letnick put aside his partisan talking points and gave his personal assurance that the government’s intention

is to support farming in those places where nonfarm income is the only thing that keeps people on the land. As soon as the theatrics had died down, the B.C. NDP sent out a fundraising plea to its members to help “save” the ALR. The party is broke and desperate after losing its fourth straight election, and it hopes to activate its declining donor base by portraying the changes as the imminent slaughter of its most sacred cow. Voters have three years before the next election to assess this situation. If there is a flood of exclusions of prime agricultural land, then the NDP will be able to make its case that its warnings were at least partially true. Big debut for Jolie’s ‘Maleficent’ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - The biggest box-office debut of Angelina Jolie’s career propelled Disney’s twisted fairy tale “Maleficent” to a scary-good $70 million opening. The PG-rated fantasy beat forecasts to easily top all films over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Though “Maleficent” was early on considered a risky endeavour for Disney that might turn away family audiences by retelling “Sleeping Beauty” from the villain’s perspective, the film emerged as a hit largely because of the draw of Jolie. Star power has been increasingly elusive in modern Hollywood, where name-brand concepts often rule the box-office. But Jolie, in her first live-action starring role in years, drove interest for “Maleficent” despite lacklustre reviews from critics. “It’s a unique thing,” said Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney. “Her star power transcends borders and genre.” Seth MacFarlane’s Western comedy “A Million Ways to Die in the West” was out-gunned by “Maleficent.” The R-rated Universal release opened in third place with a tepid $17.1 million despite a starry cast of Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron and Amanda Seyfried. By contrast, MacFarlane’s “Ted” (for which he’s making a sequel) opened with $54.4 million in 2012. Last weekend’s top film, Fox’s big-budget mutant sequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” dropped to second with $32.6 million. It’s a somewhat steep decline for “Days of Future Past,” but the film made $95.6 million internationally in its second week, good enough to push its global cumulative total passed $500 million already. But “Maleficent” dominated the marketplace, which has seen female-leading films continually challenge the much-disputed but still prevalent notion that male stars fuel box office. Next weekend will bring a battle between Shailene Woodley in the young adult novel adaptation “The Fault in Our Stars” and Tom Cruise in the sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow.” ”Edge of Tomorrow“ got a jump on its North America release, taking in $20 million in 28 countries over the weekend.

willing to use the public treasury to support your company? And of course, corporations are happy to play one province or country against another, as politicians “buy” jobs for their region. But there is a deeper, almost tectonic force at play – the change in attitudes about what the state should do. In the late-19th century German chancellor Otto von Bismarck created what we now call the welfare state, mainly for universal health care and old age pensions. Compared to today, those were pretty modest and arguably defensible aims for a government. Since Bismarck’s time, the welfare state has grown into something much more, something more accurately labelled as the “entitlement state.” Thus, these days, corporate heads, on-the-take for decades, continue to demand subsidies from governments (i.e. Chrysler’s recent ask for $700 million from Ontario and the federal government). Meanwhile, the leaders of government employee unions demand that taxpayers pay for pension benefits negotiated decades ago when people lived shorter lives – pensions that are far more generous than anything most taxpayers will ever see. From corporation heads to union presidents, the welfare state has been replaced by the entitlement state. It’s the newest and most prevalent form of chutzpah. Selling sex should not be a crime but buying it should: survey THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - A majority of people who responded to a Justice Department online survey on prostitution earlier this year felt that purchasing sexual services should be a criminal offence. However, two-thirds of them said selling sex should not be an offence. A majority also said that benefiting economically from the prostitution of an adult should be illegal. The findings are expected to influence the government’s upcoming response to a recent Supreme Court ruling that said Canada’s legal regime around prostitution was offside. Respondents who felt prostitution should be legal did support restrictions, including regular medical testing and a system of regulation, taxation

and licensing. The Canadian Press obtained a copy of the survey, which was conducted between Feb. 17 and March 17 and attracted 31,172 responses. Of those, 27 came from outside the country and were dropped from the overall analysis. The survey was set to be made public Monday, and new legislation is expected to be tabled soon. “The volume of responses to the department’s online consultation on prostitutionrelated offences is indicative of the significant level of public interest in, and engagement on, the issue of prostitution in Canada,” the report said. The survey was commissioned after the Supreme Court of Canada struck down three key sections of the prostitution law in December.

The department asked respondents if they thought buying or selling sex should be illegal and if there should be exceptions. It asked those who support legal prostitution if there should be limitations. It also sought opinions on benefiting economically from the prostitution of an adult. Tallying the response, the department found that 56 per cent felt purchasing sexual services should be a criminal offence, while 44 per cent thought it shouldn’t be criminal. But 66 per cent said selling sex should not be a criminal offence, while 34 per cent though it should be. And 62 per cent felt that benefiting economically from the prostitution of an adult should be a criminal offence, while 38 per cent said no.

SIMPSON (NEE NOWAK), PAULINE – was born on December 15, 1929 in Yellow Creek, Saskatchewan and passed away on May 30, 2014 in Trail, BC. She is predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Chester, in 2007. She is survived by her daughters Connie and Karen (Jake) and one precious grandson, Tyler (Melissa). Pauline was a warm and wonderful person whose smile brightened everyone’s day. She treasured her family and friends and will be immeasurably missed by them. Cremation has taken place and by her request there will not be a service. The family would like to thank Karen and Jake’s co-workers at Columbia View Lodge for their fantastic care of Mom. A special thank you to Tammie and Rebecca for making Mom’s last day so peaceful. “Mommy, you are free, so fly like the beautiful angel you are.” *** BRYAN, JOHN M. “JACK” – Aged 88 years, passed away suddenly on May 21 in Penticton. Jack is survived and lovingly remembered by his siblings Patsy and Tom (Aase); sons Pat (Therese), Mike (Liz) and James (Vera); grandchildren Laurie (Clinton), Jessica (Luc), Lynda, Owen, Justin, Jocelyn, Megan, Joshua, Shannon, Julie and Nicolas; and great-grandchildren Shane, Derek, Daniel, Phoenix and Molly. Jack worked as a research metallurgist, investigating novel ways of extracting the riches from the Sullivan and Red Dog ores. His favourite pastimes were Latin dancing and studying physics. The family enjoyed watching Jack “bust a move” on the dance floor, but we did not share his passion for the other hobby because, frankly, the theories of quantum mechanics and relativity were well beyond our grasp. Jack served a long stint as chairman of the Rossland Scouts, followed by many terms as a school trustee. He was a member of the Legion and the Eagles, and played a pivotal administrative role in the restoration of the Eagles Hall after it sustained fire damage. Jack relished the roles of Grandpa and Great-grandpa. Every summer for well over a decade, his grandchildren would descend on Rossland from various parts of the province to enjoy two weeks of fun and escape from their parents. With help from his friends, Jack would treat his grandchildren to an adventurepacked holiday that included swimming, the Follies, the mine museum and the Colander. A Celebration of Life will be held in Penticton this summer. We will miss his unwavering commitment to family. As one granddaughter wrote on social media, Jack was the glue that

held our extended family together. Mom had many wonderful friendships throughout her life some that started in childhood that remain just as strong today and others that have built over time all of these friendships were filled with love, laughter and joy. She will be greatly missed by her cherished life long friends Don and Dorothy Linton and their children and Jean-Paul Guilbeault who is a true angel that walks upon this earth. Mom was always the champion for the underdog always trying to make someone else’s life just a little bit better. Mom was a wonderful cook and loved to hold dinner parties that anyone who came always wanted a second invite. Mom was famous for her shopping and loved nothing better than to find that special gift. She loved to travel especially to her second home in Newfoundland. Her grandchildren were the apples of her eye. One of the last trips she ever took was to see her first great-grandchild. Words cannot express the profound sadness we feel, mom is now free from pain and is peaceful looking down upon us with her father James Urquhart and stepdaughter Desiree Skiboff beside her. Fashion designer dies Couple recovers $50 million lotto ticket PAT MCDONAGH

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Award-winning Canadian designer Pat McDonagh, whose legendary fashion career spanned more than half a century, has died. She was 80. In a phone interview with The Canadian Press, McDonagh’s brother, Michael, confirmed his elder sister’s passing early Saturday morning in Toronto after battling terminal cancer. McDonagh was one of the co-founders of what is now known as the Fashion Design Council of Canada - the previous owners and producers of Toronto’s Fashion Week. Among her many accolades were The New York Times award for design excellence in 1992, best shoe award from the Bata Shoe Museum in 2000, and a lifetime achievement award from the Fashion Design Council of Canada in 2003. Among the notable women who wore her designs was Michaelle Jean. While serving as governor general, Jean wore a military-inspired, McDonagh-designed coat to welcome U.S. President Barack Obama to Canada in 2009.

THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - A Toronto-area couple endured a roller-coaster ride of emotions when a lottery ticket worth $50 million went missing only to be found and returned by a person at their church. Hakeem Nosiru won the Jan. 17 Lotto Max draw and was one day away from claiming the money when the ticket, which he duct-taped to the inside his wife’s purse for safekeeping, was missing after they attended church. That sparked a frantic search of their Brampton home, with garbage bins being upended and their contents picked through

piece by piece, an effort that left Nosiru and his wife empty handed and feeling “miserable.” But that despair turned to joy after a fellow member of the congregation discovered the ticket and reunited it with them on April 1 - saying “April fools” a return made possible because Nosiru signed the ticket with their address. But the saga wasn’t over yet, as Nosiru gave the ticket to Ontario Provincial Police, who were investigating the matter for Ontario Lottery and Gaming to ensure there were no further snags. Everything checked out and Nosiru and his wife Abiola were

beaming for the cameras at the OLG prize centre Monday, telling reporters they were planning on travelling the world and helping out their family. Abiola Nosiru said that when she realized her husband’s winning ticket had disappeared from her purse “I had a fly in my stomach and I couldn’t sleep for days. I couldn’t eat. I was devastated.” “We just wanted to see the reality. And the reality is right here now,” she said, fighting back tears. She wasn’t sure what they’ll do for the woman who ended the ticket’s exodus, but told her “I just want to say thank you.”

Wanting to get the event back on as soon as possible, they rescheduled it for Thursday. “They’re really great and really active, so you just call them up and tell them anything that’s for the kids in these schools they’re all over it,” said Shields. “They’re moms on a mission when they get down to something.” When SD 20 withdrew its support, superintendent Greg Luterback made it clear that the district would not be able to support the meet, which included withdrawing everything from teacher participation and insurance, to school T-shirts and transportation. Yet parents continue to hammer out solutions, even solving the major hurdle of getting athletes to Haley Park. The District Parents Advisory Council (DPAC) agreed to pay for Trail Transit to transport athletes from Fruitvale and RobsonCastlegar to Haley Park in Warfield and back, almost certainly ensuring a decent turnout for the event. Organizers have recruited close to 40 parents to help run the meet, and have a long list of parents willing to step in to act as team coaches and leaders, timers, statisticians, and starters. Meet set to go despite hurdles

FROM PAGE 11 “It’s coming together, and it’s really become a community effort especially with all the parents and the PACs on board . . . I’m excited to see actually everyone really pulling together and making it happen. Because we weren’t too sure what it was going to look like, then these little hurdles keep getting tossed out there.” The annual meet draws close to 300 students which compete in over 100 events and has been running for over 70 years. There will be a slight change to some of the events to conform to the long-term athletic development plan of B.C. Athletics. “This meet has a big history, it’s a district meet, and the kids around here don’t get that many opportunities to compete in track and field . . . it seemed kind of just wrong for them not to get that chance when they’ve been practicing and working towards it.” The meet will hit the starting blocks at 8:30 a.m. Thursday and wrap up around 3 p.m.
