The B.C. legislature adjourned for the summer Thursday with opposition MLAs battling to the end against legislation to divide the Agricultural Land Reserve into two zones.

The government used its majority to cut off debate and pass the bill, despite days of demands to withdraw it and complete promised consultation with farmers around the province.

Independent MLAs Andrew Weaver and Vikki Huntington joined NDP critics in denouncing the move to ease restrictions on secondary farmland uses in the North, Kootenay and Cariboo zones. Another target of criticism was the move to formalize the six local Agricultural Land Commission panels to make decisions on exclusions and permitted uses.

Columbia RiverRevelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald accused the government of adding social and economic considerations to farmland as a pretext to undermine the commission’s independence.

“We are talking about important agricultural areas that will now be open to exclusions, that decision being made by a bunch of B.C. Liberal political hacks on criteria that are totally nebulous – to the extend that there’s even a provision to add whatever else the cabinet wants to add,” Macdonald said. “It could be economic.

Pimm, who was replaced as agriculture minister as he undergoes cancer surgery, issued an apology this week for his comments in the email.

Premier Christy Clark said the changes do not affect the Okanagan, Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island zones, which generate 85% of B.C.’s farm income.

“We are making it economic in areas with a shorter growing season, with less productive farmland,

to be able to continue to make land valuable enough that they will

pass it down to another family,” Clark said.

Primal Pattern Exercises: the Six Exercises You Need to Master in Order to Unleash Your Inner Athlete.

Our society has evolved faster than our bodies, if we go back three or four generations, there were no computers, TVs, video games and most people didn’t even own a car. Back in those days humans were more athletic and Paul Chek* identified seven Aurélie primal patterns they had to Wiedemann master in order to perform their daily tasks. Those patterns are: to lunge, to squat, to push, to pull, to bend, to twist and gait.

Nowadays, because of a sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition, most individuals aged 30 or more aren’t able to execute these patterns properly anymore. Unfortunately human evolution isn’t as fast as the development of technology and today it is of foremost importance that people who struggle with primal patterns train themselves to master them because they are genetically designed to do so. Everybody is an athlete in potential and our bodies almost crave exercise.

In fact those six exercises and gait represent the basics to master before engaging in any kind of sport. Let’s take hockey for example, players need to be able to bend over the stick, twist when they shoot, lunge in several directions, push or pull other players and gait is of foremost importance since they sometimes need to move explosively on the ice, almost running on it.

Golf requires players to effectively bend over the ball to position themselves, twist explosively and push the ball to set it in motion, and of course walk. Horseback riding requires one to squat over an unstable surface when the horse lopes or trots, pull on the reins to stop, push on the stirrup to get on the saddle, as well as bend over and twist on certain occasions. These few examples show how primal patterns transfer to sports in general. Of course even though sports are almost always a combination of primal patterns, there is also a level of skill that needs to be learned and mastered in order for an athlete to be proficient. In the Senior group, Keagan Shedden took top honours along with the $300 prize, Kyra Huston came in second and was awarded $200 while Jordan Burnham came in third and won $100.

“I was very impressed with the level of skill

demonstrated by all of the participants,” Bethune said. “We look forward to having these bright minds return to the College when they begin their post-secondary educations.”

With the potential for seasonal spring flooding, the RDEK is encouraging residents in flood prone areas to take steps now to protect their homes and properties if they feel they may be at risk.

“One of the challenges for people can be where to get sand or sandbags. To help make that easier, the RDEK has established several self-fill sandbagging stations around the region,” explains Emergency Services Coordinator Melody Munro. “The stations will have pallets of empty sandbags and sand so people can fill as many bags as they feel they need.”

The public will have to bring their own shovels, ties and other supplies necessary to fill the bags and transport them. The bags should only be filled half full as they become hard to lift and place.

Rotating strikes continue

Black Press The B.C. Teachers’ Federation has notified school districts it will continue rotating strikes around the province this week, as negotiations continue to settle their long-running dispute over pay and staffing levels.

BCTF president Jim Iker notified the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association in a letter Wednesday afternoon.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender reiterated the BCPSEA’s latest offer of a $1,200 signing bonus and a six-year contract term, but indicated the union needs to modify its demands and stop strike action.

“I’m profoundly disappointed that while we’re still at the table, with all of the talk that’s been going on, that children and parents and communities are continuing to be held hostage and put in the middle of this dispute,” Fassbender said.

The Labour Relations Board is to hear arguments Thursday on whether the school districts can cut teacher pay 10% in response to the union’s withdrawal of services.

Gas prices forces conservation: poll

Gas prices may have people walking more, but walking is sometimes not an option in rural areas.

causing financial hardship for a majority of B.C. residents, many of whom say they’re driv-

ing less and trying alternatives like walking or transit more.

The Insights West online survey in partnership with Black Press found two-thirds of respondents across the province have felt financial hardship from the recent rise in gas prices.

Pump prices for regular gas climbed above $1.50 per litre in Metro Vancouver this week, up more than 20 per cent since early January.

More Interior B.C. residents cited hardship – 74 per cent – even though they don’t pay the extra 17-centa-litre gas tax charged

by TransLink in Metro Vancouver.

president Mario Canseco said $1.50 per litre appears to be a psychological level where more people seek ways to cut their fuel consumption.

“We’re seeing people saying it might be better to take the bus this afternoon, it might be better to walk or try to bike – essentially not to drive,” he said.

Fifty-five per cent of poll respondents across B.C. said they’re already driving less than usual, while 27 per cent said they’re walking more and 19 per cent said they’re taking public transit more.

(Twenty-six per cent in the Lower Mainland said they’re taking transit more.)

While it’s helpful that gas prices tend to spike in spring and summer, when the weather is more conducive to walking or biking than December, Canseco believes that’s coincidence.

“They’re not doing it because it’s lovely outside, they’re doing it because they’re feeling the pain when they gas up.”

The poll also uncovered refueling habits of those surveyed.

It may not sound like a winning strategy, but a large number of respondents – 38 per cent – said they’ve refueled with less gas than usual lately, possibly in hopes of lower prices the next time.

Just over half said they buy at gas stations that give them loyalty reward points, while far fewer respondents said they use a station close to home or work (20 per cent), or they buy at any station when they run low (10 per cent.)

Sixteen per cent said they don’t own a car.

The poll also found widespread belief that gas taxes are too high, that B.C. stations charge more than ones elsewhere in Canada, and 91 per cent said they believe gas stations take advantage of motorists by raising prices just before a long weekend.

“There’s a high number of people who look at the service stations as gougers,” Canseco said.

Just four per cent said they’ve considered selling their vehicle and switching to a more fuel efficient one.

Canseco said he believes that will change over time as electric car prices come down.

The poll didn’t ask the more than 800 respondents if they regularly drive to the U.S. to refuel with cheaper gas.

But Canseco said a previous poll on crossborder shopping habits showed gas savings is one of the top reasons why Lower Mainland residents frequently head south.

Under hard acceleration, primarily from the 4-speed automatic, the Micra is quite vocal. You can really hear the engine noise intrude the cabin.

It’s not a performance machine like the Nissan GT-R, where you want to hear as much ruckus as you can. However, when cruising at highway speeds – without the lead foot acceleration – my driving partner and I noticed how quiet the cabin is. Wind noise is kept at bay and it’s serene.

Furthermore, it was an incredibly blustery day when we took these pint-sized four-doors out. Needless to say, you could feel the swagger of the car at highway speeds. But in its defense, larger vehicles felt the wrath of Mother Nature’s blow, too.

While very affordable, the Micra isn’t “cheap” in execution. Even the knobs on the roll down windows have a soft touch to them. And there are metallic accents to break up the otherwise bland black interior.

I certainly wasn’t disappointed when captaining the Micra.

Even though that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it’s not. As far as small cars go, it’s functional, funky and has great value. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that gets you from point A to B – minus all the options – or said vehicle with a few extras, the 2015 Micra might be the car for you.

Taking the stress out of towing a trailer

Towing a trailer may be one of the most stressful driving situations for many truck owners.

For one thing, it is not easy to manouevre around corners and change lanes with that extra length behind your truck. Backing up also can be challenging and towing up a steep hill can be tough on your truck. Whether you tow a boat, car, snowmobiles, or motorcycles, custom truck accessories can make towing less nerve-wracking.

Use the Right Hitch and Other Equipment

Just as each vehicle has a maximum towing capacity so too does each trailer hitch, hitch ball, ball mount and safety chain. To tow safely, you need to make sure every component you use is ready to handle the weight of your fully loaded trailer. Remember, your towing capacity is equal to the capacity of the weakest link in the system.

Camping season is almost upon us and it will soon be time to take that trailer out for some fun times.

But is it fun for the driver? –

Pulling too much weight can be very dangerous. Check your owner’s manual to find your vehicle’s towing capacity, including the maximum gross trailer weight and tongue weight it can handle. Tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. In most cases, it is about 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight.

All trailer hitches feature a class rating, as well as a weight rating, so be sure the hitch can accommodate the loaded trailer. For instance, Reese Class 2 ($159) hitches have a maximum rated capacity of 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Class IV ($175) receiver-style hitches have a maximum capacity of 1,200 pounds tongue weight and 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight.

capacity than the traditional receiver-style weight distributing hitch, then you need to step up to a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Prices start at $650.

Choosing A Hitch Ball

If you have a drawbar style hitch, the hitch ball usually is built right in. But if you have a receiver-style hitch, you’ll need to choose your own hitch ball.

Like vehicles and trailer hitches, hitch balls also are

assigned a maximum tongue weight and gross trailer weight rating.

Hitch balls are made from a variety of materials, and some are available in a choice of finishes, including chrome.

They cost is $12 to $14.

The hitch ball diameter must be the same diameter as the trailer coupler (1 7/8 inches, 2 inches or 2 5/16 inches).

The shank diameter of the hitch ball should be the same as the hole diameter in the

ball mount.

The shank length should be long enough to allow at least two threads to be visible when the hitch ball is installed and the nut completely tightened.

Load Your Trailer Properly

Rule of thumb is roughly two-thirds (60 to 66 percent) of the gross load weight should be positioned toward the front half of the trailer.

Place large or heavy objects

on the trailer first. Tie these objects down securely and from several angles to ensure they do not shift. Pack remaining items in a manner that maintains balance of the trailer. Once the trailer is loaded, double-check the positioning and stability of the cargo.

Mouldings are worth their weight in gold when it comes to enhancing your home’s décor. However, installing them can cause a few headaches for those who take up the challenge without being properly prepared.

For this project to be a success, three elements are vital: a few basic tools, a meticulous nature, and a good dose of patience.

The­ first­ step­ consists of measuring the room to determine the number of mouldings required. When shopping for them, choose mouldings longer than your wall, as it is preferable to cut a moulding too long rather than having lots of joints. The fewer joints there are, the more beautiful the end result.
