One main highway passes through the Nechako Valley, Highway 16. Going west from Vanderhoof there is Fort Fraser and Fraser Lake. Highway 16 connects with Highway 27 going north to Fort St. James just outside of Vanderhoof.

Summer is the busiest season with camping, boating, hiking and other water activities at their best. The fall, however, offers some of the best hiking, biking and golfing opportunities, along with the fall fair. Winter brings with it skiing at the Murray Ridge Ski Hill in Fort St. James, cross country skiing at various trails in the area, not to mention ice fishing on the many lakes.

If you’re looking for tips on local activities and attractions, there are many information centres located throughout the region which are visited by thousands of tourists every year.

In Fort St. James, the centre is located in the Chamber of Commerce building at 115 Douglas Ave. 250-996-7023. In Fort Fraser, the information centre is located in the rail car on Highway 16 during the summer months. Vanderhoof & Area The Carrier Indians pioneered the land in this area long before the first white man arrived. Following the driving of the last spike of the Grand Trunk Railway in 1914 the race was on to buy cheap land and the settlement of Vanderhoof was begun.

The settlement grew and in 1926 the Village of Vanderhoof was born. In the 1950’s the Kenny Dam was built and more people came to the area. The 1960’s

Events for Vanderhoof Annual Wild Goose Chase Fun Run This event is the beginning of May every year and has been running for 36 years. This is a fun run for either a 3.5 km, 8 km run or 5 km walk through the streets of Vanderhoof.

Prizes, gifts and awards are given for various categories.

Hooterville Hoot Held annually in early June, the Hooterville Hoot car show attracts collectors from around the province and country.

This year the Hoot is scheduled for June 1, 2014. Spend the afternoon scouring through the automobiles at Riverside Park between 11am and 3pm. The Hooterville Hoot is hosted by the Nechako Valley Classics and Customs and if you need more information on the car club or the Hooterville Hoot call Dave at 250-567-0821. Meetings are held the 1st Tuesday of every month, for location and times call Dave.

Events for Vanderhoof Nechako Valley Exhibition Held the third weekend in August, the 48th Annual Nechako Valley Exhibition has something for everyone.

This year the event is August 15-17, 2014. The exhibition combines all facets of the local agricultural community from animals to home baked goods. Spend the weekend wandering around the endless booths filled with creative crafts and treats or watching one of the numerous demonstrations put on frequently.

Pumpkin Walk For 13 years the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the Great Pumpkin Walk, bringing to life Riverside Campground for Halloween night. Thousands of local residents attend this social evening, enjoying a free cup of hot chocolate, the carved pumpkins lining the road, the campfires where volunteers hand out candy, and the grand finale: an awe inspiring fireworks display.

In past years this fun family event has helped to reduce vandalism and mischief on Halloween night. It is held every year on October 31, no matter what day of the week that is. The Pumpkin Walk starts at 5pm and the fireworks display at 8pm. The Great Pumpkin Walk is a significant event in Vanderhoof, funded entirely by the community.

Parade of Lights Run rampant on the streets and take advantage of the great sales. Held in Vanderhoof on the first Friday in December, Midnight Madness is kicked off by the Parade of Lights.

Bring the whole family downtown to enjoy the festive atmosphere. In Fort St. James and Fraser Lake the event occurs in late November. Most downtown retailers remain open until midnight the same evening as the Parade of Lights.

Fort St. James & Area Founded by Simon Fraser in 1806 on the shores of beautiful Stuart Lake. Fort St. James is an historic town and is very proud of its history.

The Fort St. James National Historic Site, the ancient burial site of Carrier Chief Kwah, Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church, and the monument to legendary bush pilot Russ Baker are of great interest to residents and visitors alike.

Year round outdoor and indoor recreational opportunities include hiking and biking trails, ballparks, golf, fishing, hunting, water-skiing, canoeing, swimming, sailing and boating, alpine and nordic skiing, skating, hockey, curling, snowmobiling, dog sledding and camping.

Nak’azdli Band Nak’azdli Band has almost 1900 members, of which about 700 live on the main reserve along Nakalbun (Stuart Lake).

The Band has its own independent school (Nakalbun Elementary), gas station (Carrier Food and Fuel), grocery store (Sana’aih Market), daycare, youth centre, greenhouse, and Tl’oh Forest Products. It also owns Nahounli Creek Gas in Fort St. James.

The Nak’azdli Health Centre is an accredited facility, providing services to both Nak’azdli and Fort St. James citizens.

Nak’azdli is governed by a Chief and eight Councilors, and has numerous committees to oversee core functions in the community.

Nak’azdli citizens enjoy a close link to a vast territory and continue their traditions of hunting, fishing, trapping, and harvesting a variety of resources. The two salmon runs, Early and Late Stuart, remain an important source of food so water health and safety is one of the key priorities of the Band.

Events for Fort St. James 17th Annual Stuart Lake Fishing Derby For those fishing enthusiasts out there, look for the 17th Annual Stuart Lake Fishing Derby at Fort St. James on Friday, June 27 - Monday, June 30, 2014 (July long weekend). This “Famous Rainbow Fishing Derby” offers thousands of dollars to be won for 1st, 2nd & 3rd prizes with additional prizes being added.

The catch and prize money involves

the heaviest Rainbow Trout caught throughout this 3 day event so come on out and enjoy the food, fun and fireworks.

Fraser Lake & Fort Fraser

The attractive lakeside community of Fraser Lake lies alongside the Yellowhead Highway, west of Vanderhoof. The pioneer roots of the area’s history date back to the fur trade, with the establishment in 1806 of a fur-trading post by Simon Fraser, at Fort Fraser near the east end of Fraser Lake.

The town was established in 1914, during the construction of the Grand Trunk Railway, and was incorporated as a village in 1966.

Fort Fraser this year celebrates 100 years since the last spike was driven into the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. It is one of the oldest settlements in British Columbia and named after the explorer Simon Fraser. His mandate from the North

West Company was to cross the Rockies and establish trading relations with the people in the interior of what is now British Columbia, but which Fraser called New Caledonia.

Here he established Fort McLeod in 1805, Fort St. James and Fort Fraser in 1806, and Fort George in 1807.

Launch your sport boat on Fraser Lake, a water ski and hydro-sliding paradise. If you prefer relaxation, soak up the rays on one of the lake’s three sandy beaches.

Mining, agriculture, tourism, and logging are the mainstays of the local economy.

Endako is west of Fraser Lake and has a large railway yard which was established in 1914.

It involves music, games for kids such as wheel barrow races, fireworks, barbecue picnic lunches, and local baking. This event is fun for all ages, so bring the whole family. Join in on the Canada Day celebrations with Fraser Lake’s annual float parade, fireworks, slo-pitch tournament, curling and much more.

Rose Prince Pilgrimage Held annually the second weekend of July at Lejac near Fort

Fraser, the site of the Lejac Residential School. This event celebrates the life of a Carrier native woman who many feel should be recognized as a saint.

Local Trails Vanderhoof Community Trail Vanderhoof has three trails available if you want a leisurely walk around town. The Riverside Nature Trail starting at Riverside Park, the W.L. McLeod Wetland Trail situated along Victoria Street and the Heritage Nature Trail at the Vanderhoof Community Museum.

All trail cards for the sections are available from the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre.

They also have copies of a Nature Guide for the Nechako Valley.

Sinkut Mountain Sinkut Mountain is the tallest peak in Vanderhoof. At over 4,000 feet it overlooks the Nechako Valley and offers a 360 degree view. There is a forestry tower at the top and a few microwave and cellular towers.

To get to the mountain take Highway 16 towards Prince George out of Vanderhoof, travel 6.6 km to Blackwater Road, turn right; travel 5.0 km to Sinkut Lake Road, turn right; travel west 5.0 km to Hargreaves Rd, turn left; travel 1.6 km south to Meridian Road, turn left; travel 11.5 km east then south and then after the bridge on Sinkut Mountain Forest Service Road; turn left on an unmarked road 100 metres past the 11 km marker. Park along side the forestry road on the left.

Waterlily Lake Jump on a bike and explore the 30 km of well kept trails at Waterlily Lake, located on Sturgeon Point Road north of Vanderhoof off Highway 16. Many different areas around the region offer well-kept trails suitable for mountain bike riding.

Greer Creek Falls This easy 3.4 km return trail leads you to a 7 metre waterfall, with a pool at the base ideal for a cool dip on a hot day. Also at the falls is a picnic table and fire pit. Just be sure to pack out your garbage.

To get there, head out on the Kenney Dam Road, and turn left on the Kluskus Forest Road. The trailhead is at km 37.5 on the Kluskus Forest Road.

Telegraph Trail Visit the old telegraph route, built in the 1890s, now converted into a series of walking trails. The telegraph line was built during the Klondike Gold Rush to allow for communication between the gold fields and surrounding towns. The line has not been used since the 30’s, but sections of the original trail are there to be explored south of Vanderhoof at Hogsback Lake. The lake is a great place for swimming in the summer and the trail is perfect for hiking or mountain biking. The 10 km Telegraph Trail stretches to Blackwater Road.

Local Trails

Ormond Creek Trail This one way 10-km trail will take you along the east side of Ormond Creek from Fraser Lake to Ormond and Oona Lakes. The trail goes along the Ormond Creek canyon, 40 - 50 feet deep and 150 yards long. The trail head is just beyond Peterson’s Point Campsite. Please ensure children are well supervised. You can do a shorter version and follow Ormond Creek, then turn back. This offers beautiful views of the Creek and Canyon. Get more info at the Visitor Center.

Chinlac Massacre Site Nestled at the crossing of the Nechako and Stuart Rivers, is the site of the 1745 Chinlac village. In 1745, the southern Denes came and nearly annihilated the entire Chinlac population because of their dislike for the Chinlac Chief, Khadintel.

This scene has been under archaeological study for the past couple of years. Large land depressions mark the spot where houses once stood and there are hundreds of food caches to be found.

Accessible by boat or by trail, this site will awaken the historian in everyone.

Cheslatta Falls Located 60 kilometres south of Highway 16 on the Holy Cross Forest Service Road, a trail is preserved from the traditional route used by Carrier Indians who built several small villages in the area. Circular pit depressions from semi-underground winter lodges can be seen from the return loop trail. The spectacular route starts at the Cheslatta River recreation site and overlooks the Cheslatta River system, a spillway for water that is diverted through tunnels in the coast mountains to generate power for the Alcan smelter in Kitimat, B.C. The approximate distance is 1.2 km one way.

Caution: There are steep drop-offs into turbulent water. This hike is not suitable for young children and pets. Please respect the provincially protected archaeological sites and do not disturb or remove anything.

Cheslatta Trail The trail is an aboriginal route that linked villages on the Cheslatta Lake with villages on Fraser Lake. This 75 km trail passes by 14 lakes and is accessible at several points along the Holy Cross Forest Service Road.

Local Trails Fun for all on Fraser Lake

Red Rock Volcano The 25-million-year-old volcano is only accessible by walking trails. It can be found on Red Rock Mountain, located on the northwest corner of Fraser Lake. Frozen lava flows are still visible near the crater. Inside the volcano, there are trees dating back 150 years. For details visit the Fraser Lake Info. Centre or the Stellat’en First Nations Band Office 250-699-8747.

Fraser Mountain Trail Hike the Fraser Mountain Trail for a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding area. The trail head is east of Fraser Lake, near Piper’s Glen. A three to four hour hike takes you to the top where you can perch on a B.C. Forest Service lookout tower to view the sights down below.

Nyan-Wheti Trail Nyan-Wheti means “The Trail Across,” in the Carrier language. Before the Europeans, this trail linked native villages from Stuart Lake and Fraser Lake. This 45 km hike is for experienced, well equipped hikers. The Trail begins on Baker Drive off Sowchea Bay Road in Fort St. James and ends on Stella Rd. 1 km west of Nautley Village.

Black Point Trail Take a picnic and hike the Black Point Trail to the south shore of Francois Lake. This half hour brisk walk takes you through beautiful forests and along the sandy beach to rocky Black Point. Information and directions to the trail head are available at the Fraser Lake information centre.

Mouse Mountain Mouse Mountain, named after its uncanny resemblance to the animal, is located in the village of Fraser Lake.

The mountain has a number of hiking and cross-country skiing trails. The main trail, a 45-minute round trip hike, will reward you with an incredible view of the lake and entire valley. Keep your eyes peeled for swans gathering for their trip south every winter. The route is safe and well marked. Drop by the information centre for directions to the trailhead.

Local Trails

Ripples of the Past New to Fort St. James is an interpretive trail through the town of Fort St. James starting at the National Historic Site and ending at the Russ Baker Memorial. The trail is for all ages and walking abilities.

Mount Pope - Nak’al Nak’al was named Mt. Pope in 1865, after Major Pope became separated from his survey crew and spent a night alone on the mountain. The Carrier People used it as a lookout where they watched for hostile parties approaching on Stuart Lake. To reach Nak’al, follow Stuart Drive West to Stones Bay Road. Turn left. The trailhead is located four kilometres ahead. This day use park is popular with hikers. A 6.5-kilometre hiking trail leads to the gazebo at the peak, at an elevation of 790 meters or 2400 feet. (It will take from four to six hours to reach the peak and return.) From the peak, you will see beautiful Stuart Lake and the mountains to the north. If you are hiking, please bring your own drinking water, as there is no potable water on the trail to the peak. Hikers, please stay on the marked trails.

Tsilcoh Falls Located on Pinchi Road, 30 km from Fort St. James, these natural falls are astounding. The road is accessible by car, and there is a campsite for day and overnight use. There is a trail that goes right down to the falls where a breathtaking view awaits. From mid to late August you can catch a glimpse of kokanee fish. Please be extremely careful if you are unfamiliar with these falls as the water is fast and very deep.

Dickinson Hiking Trail If you would like a spectacular view, head to the Dickinson Hiking Trail. Follow Stuart Drive to the hospital and turn left on Pineridge. Drive 400 metres past the end of the pavement to the entrance to the two kilometre long trail. A sign, on your right marks the start. Bring your camera for incredible pictures from the peak of Mount Dickinson.

Tulle Lake Trails Check out this series of 15kms of interconnecting trails to Nanna, Marie and Tulle Lakes. Great opportunities forwildlife viewing, and a great spot for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

Museums & More Vanderhoof Heritage Museum Located on Highway 16 just as you leave Vanderhoof heading west, you will find the Vanderhoof Heritage Museum offering visitors a glimpse into the 1920s. Tour guides provide slide shows and walking tours. Included in the tour is a 30-minute stroll through a 1920s farmhouse, hotel and jailhouse. The newly restored Smithers House is the home to a gift store which is open year round.

This was one of the first homes built in Vanderhoof, and in 2010, the building restoration was completed. A 20-minute nature walk weaves through other heritage buildings such as the Yukon telegraph cabin and a oneroom school. Self-guided tours are also an option. Open May to September, 7 days a week from 10 am - 6 pm.

O.K. Cafe: The restored OK Cafe operates seasonally in Vanderhoof’s original 1920’s O.K. Hotel, now located on the historical site. O.K. Cafe Season: from mid May to mid September - 7 days a week.

Fraser Lake Museum Learn the town’s story at the Fraser Lake Museum, located at the Visitor Information Centre. Itself a fine example of log-home construction, the museum displays remnants of the rich history of the Fraser Lake area, and an informative display on Dakelh culture.

ENDAKO MINES Endako Mines is a large open pit mine which has been operating for over 40 years.

It is Canada’s largest primary producer of molybdenum. We produce Ultrapure (molybdenum disulphide) which is a lubricant, and a final roaster product (molybdenum oxide), which is a steel hardener. The final products are sold to countries such as the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, as well as to various European countries.

Endako Mines is located off Highway 16, about 12 km south of the community of Endako on Endako Mine Road. We invite any interested individuals to tour our mine. Tours are free of charge and will be conducted Wednesdays. Tours can also be arranged for school children year round. Tours last approximately 2 hours.

Participants for all tours must be 14 years or older.

Space on the public tours is limited to six individuals per tour.

Museums & More The Last Spike Visit the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, which was completed at Fort Fraser in 1914 and declared a Heritage Site by the Canadian government in 1998. During the construction of the railway in the early 1900s, the local population blossomed to 3,000. The railway contributed to a sudden climb in the economy and an even quicker decline when the project failed after fur prices dropped following the First World War. Fort Fraser this year celebrates 100 years since the last spike was driven into the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

Chief Kwah Gravesite Chief Kwah was one of the most influential leaders of the Carrier First Nation. He was pivotal in their relationship with Simon Fraser when Europeans first arrived on July 26, 1806 and was known as the Fur Trade Chief. On his death in 1840, his request to be buried at the mouth of the Stuart River was honoured – he wanted to be able to alert his people that the salmon run was starting. To visit his grave, take the first right after the Nak’azdli River bridge, the first bridge when leaving town. For more information you can contact the Nak’azdli First Nation 250-9967171.

ARO Rose Prince Pilgrimage Held annually the second weekend of July at Lejac near Fort Fraser, the site of the Lejac Residential School. This event celebrates the life of a Carrier native woman who many feel should be recognized as a saint.

Russ Baker Memorial Frank ‘Russ’ Baker was one of the greatest bush pilots in Canada’s north. He was also the founder of Pacific Western Airlines, which later became part of Air Canada. If you are an aviation history buff, you will want to visit the Russ Baker Memorial. It’s located on Lakeshore Drive, past Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church - a 15-minute walk from Cottonwood Park.

KENNEY DAM: Located 96 kilometres south of Vanderhoof. An awe-inspiring mountain of rock, gravel and clay, as high as St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Kenney Dam measures 457 metres in width and 99 metres high. The downstream face of the dam is a spectacular sight of falls dropping 100 metres – greater than the height of a 32-storey building. The surface area of the reservoir is 910 square kilometres.

SKINS LAKE SPILLWAY CAMPGROUND: For those of you who enjoy camping and are looking for serene escape. This campground offers 20 campsites, covered cook house for picnics, outhouses, cold water taps, boat-launch and is free of charge. A tribute to Saik’uz Verans

Having fun at the Rip’n North Bike Club Park First Nations Heritage - Vanderhoof Much of Canada’s past and present includes the Aboriginal culture. The Saik’uz First Nation community, located approximately 20 minutes south of Vanderhoof on Kenney Dam Road, is the perfect venue to experience the culture.

Riverside Park - Vanderhoof Located on the banks of the Nechako River, just north of downtown Vanderhoof, Riverside Park presents the perfect opportunity for ultimate relaxation. Stop to stretch your legs, have a picnic lunch or stay overnight at one of the 38 campsites. Use of showers, sani-dump, and firewood are available when campsite fees are paid. The 1.2 km loop walking path is lamp-lit and the trail is maintained year round for running, walking, and cross-country skiing. Riverside Park is home to the Nechako Migratory Bird Sanctuary where thousands of Canada Geese, trumpeter swans and other migrating birds can be seen each spring and fall. Be sure to climb the bird watching tower for a better view.

Beaumont Provincial Park - Fraser Lake Sleep amongst the trees at beautiful Beaumont Provincial Park. Recreational Facilities & Parks The Marion Steam Shovel at Cottonwood Park

Paarens Beach Provincial Park - Fort St. James Get away from it all at Paarens Beach! The park features a 800-meter sandy beach for swimming (including a ropedoff area for the kids), a boat launch, camping and canoeing.

There’s a large day use/picnic area on the beach with picnic tables, shelters and a playground. If you want to stay longer, there are 36 campsites with pit toilets and sani-stations. The park opens in May, once the snow and ice are gone, and remains open until September. User fees are charged during these months.

Cottonwood Park - Fort St. James Cottonwood Park is the home of many of the area’s special events, including Canada Day, Stuart Lake Fishing Derby, and the Caledonia Classic Dog Sled Race. The park is home to the Marion Steam Shovel. It was built in the twenties, came to Fort St. James in the thirties and worked in the Placer Mine until the forties. The park is also home to a one third scale model of a W34 Junkers Bush Plane – a plane that played a key role in the Second World War and was key in opening up Canada’s north. It’s located close to downtown and has a number of amenities including a bandstand, children’s playground, covered picnic area, beach volleyball, and a RV sani dump.

Sowchea Bay Provincial Park - Fort St. James The Sowchea Bay Provincial Recreation Area is located 20 km west of Fort St. James on Sowchea Bay Road, five 5 km west of Paarens Beach Provincial Park. This park is the trailhead for the 5-km Antimony Mine Trail, leading to an old antimony mine. You can explore the old buildings and mining sites. But be careful, the structures are old and could collapse! The park has 30 lakefront campsites with picnic tables and firepits. It’s open from May to September, with standard fees charged. The gates open at 7am, and close at 11pm.

Winter Pastimes Many trails for snowshoeing

Snowshoeing Experience the magic of a winter forest on snowshoes!

Snowshoeing has been around for thousands of years. And, obviously, the art of snowshoeing has become more sophisticated over time – now it’s considered a winter sport. There are endless trails to conquer throughout the Stuart-Nechako area, give it a try, great excercise and very refreshing. But, be careful. Don’t take risks and most importantly, have fun.

Cross Country Skiing The trails throughout the area make this winter pasttime a must. Check at the information centre for a map of the lit, groomed trails just west of Vanderhoof at the Nechako Valley Sporting Association grounds on Redmond Pit Rd. Skating Rinks Spend the day ice-skating or perfecting your slap shot at the one of the many indoor or outdoor rinks to be found in Fort St. James, Fraser Lake and Vanderhoof. If you prefer to be a spectator, drop by the rink to watch local hockey teams compete. In the summer months the Vanderhoof arena plays host to many events.

Snowmobiling/ATV Many trails in the area make excellent routes for snowmobiles and ATVs. Some trails are maintained by local clubs and feature routes for both the beginner and more experienced rider.

Murray Ridge is located 6 miles (10 km) north of Fort St. James, northwest of Prince George. The mountain has elevation of 6500 ft.

Slush Cup Sunday at Murray Ridge Ski Area in March features events such as the Cassiar Cannonball, Bathtub Races and the Slush Cup splashdown, with lots of prizes.

Summer Activities Francois Lake One of the largest lakes in B.C., Francois Lake is approximately 125 km long. Snag some char, rainbow trout, kokanee and white fish. There are a number of lodges and outfitters who can ensure you make the most out of exploring this lake.

Self-guided Forestry Tours Explore the back country with a self-guided tour of the region’s lush forests. Grab a brochure from the information centre to navigate your way through the bush and scout out rest areas. These roads vary in condition so make sure you are well prepared. Self-guided tours are available for the Kluskus and Holy Cross Forest Service roads.

Endako Mine - Fraser Lake Tour the giant Molybdenum Mine and catch a fascinating glimpse into a real mining operation. This attraction is located just 20 km southwest of Fraser Lake. Tours can be scheduled by appointment only.

Endako Mine

Swan Capital - Fraser Lake The area boasts of 170 lakes within a 50 mile radius and is the temporary home to over 1000 Trumpeter Swans, making it the Swan Capital of the world. Trumpeters are the largest waterfowl in North America and they are not bothered by the cold. They have up to 35,000 feathers and their downy layer is 2 inches thick. The wingspan of an adult Trumpeter can reach almost 2.5 meters.

Pictographs - Fraser Lake More than a century ago, First Nations people used vermilion paint to create 21 pictographs on the north shore of Stuart Lake. These paintings illustrate images that were important to the Carrier people – fish, birds, guardian spirits, and images from dreams. They are located on the north shore of Stuart Lake, close to Honeymoon Island, and between Fort St. James and Binche Bay and are only accessible by water.

Tchentlo Lake Hot Springs - Fort St. James The springs are approximately 125 km northwest of Fort St. James. These are not commercialized hot springs and consist of three pools with temperatures of 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit. The springs are only accessible by boat. Caution: Take care where you walk as the ground is very fragile.

Kenny Dam Kenney Dam Set a day aside to explore the Kenney Dam. The Kenney Dam (or Kemano 1) is a rock-filled hydroelectric dam on the Nechako River, 96km south of Vanderhoof, British Columbia, built in the early 50s. At 1,500 feet long and 317 feet high, it is still a spectacular sight. It took 4,016,900 cubic yards of material to build the dam. It is also a great spot for camping and fishing. To reach the dam, go south on the Holy Cross Forest Service road, which starts at Lejac (6 km east of Fraser Lake). Follow the road for 68 km and you will reach the dam.

Mountain Biking Jump on a bike and explore the 30 km of well kept trails at Waterlily Lake, located on Sturgeon Point Road north of Vanderhoof off Highway 16. Many different areas around the region offer well-kept trails suitable for mountain bike riding.

Fishing If it’s rainbow trout or kokanee you’re after, the StuartNechako region is sure to meet your needs. Stay for the day or a couple of weeks, as there are many lakes and rivers with forest recreation sites to make your visit easy and enjoyable.

Canoeing Canoe enthusiasts can enjoy the Stellako, Nechako and Stuart Rivers which are suitable for paddlers of any level of experience or any one of the hundreds of other lakes the Stuart/Nechako has to offer. Scenic golf Golfing The Omineca Golf Course in Vanderhoof is a par 72, 18hole course. Enjoy a final round at the 19th Hole Restaurant located in the clubhouse. Stuart Lake Golf Course, located near Fort St. James, features nine holes with a spectacular view of Stuart Lake as well as a clubhouse for relaxation.

Also Molyhills Golf Club in Fraser Lake which is an 18-hole course. All courses are open seasonally from April to September.

Summer Activities Fort St. James Farmer’s Market It will be the market’s 17th year of offering local produce, meat, eggs, crafts, furniture, baking, jams, jellies, tasty treats, bedding plants, and more for sale each week in their downtown location across from the Lakeshore Pharmacy and Canada Post Office. The market is open every Friday from the Friday before Mother’s Day to mid-October.

Bird Watching Bird watchers can view hundreds of species at the sanctuary along the Nechako River in Vanderhoof, where you will find a bird watching tower. Bring the binoculars, it’s the perfect perch for bird lovers to view migrating swans, geese, hawks and owls that frequent the Nechako River in late fall and early spring. Birding list is available at the Vanderhoof Visitor Centre.

This natural wonder can be watched at Stellako River from the Glennanan Bridge every August.

Stellako River Indulge in the beauty of the Stellako River, which connects Francois Lake to Fraser Lake. The Stellako is world famous for its “fly-fishing and challenging, expert class canoeing river. Expert class begins at the mouth of Francois Lake, 9 km to the waterfalls. Below the waterfalls, to Fraser Lake, is beginner class with lovely calm waters.
