New veterans’ memorial unveiled in Blackfalds Ceremony commemorating opening took place last week

ast week, in conjunction with the grand opening of the Abbey Centre, the Blackfalds and Area Historical Society unveiled a new monument commemorating Blackfalds’ veterans. The monument, constructed just outside the Abbey Centre, displays the names of 85 veterans who lived in Blackfalds or the surrounding area for at least some of their lifetime.

The monument resembles a curved concrete wall covered in a glass mosaic depicting poppies and birds. Also on the wall are four large plaques depicting the names of Blackfalds’ veterans. Space has been left on the last plaque to add the names of any more veterans as well.

“It’s beautiful,” said Judy Carleton, president of the Blackfalds and Area Historical Society. “It’s a very stunning visual piece of artwork.”

Carleton said the monument is uncommon because most veteran monuments were built in the 1940s and 50s. It is quite rare for a new one to be built.

Not only that, but Carleton said most monuments only name those who were killed during the wars, while the monument in Blackfalds names everyone from the area who served. Those who were killed in action are recognized on the monument with a cross next to their names, said Carleton. She added there are four individuals recognized on the monument who are still alive.

These qualities make the monument somewhat special, she added, especially considering this year is the 100-year anniversary of the First World War. Carleton came up with the idea for the monument project after learning that funding was available for such initiatives through Veterans Affairs. She also said she felt it was something the community would get behind because previously Blackfalds had nowhere to host Remembrance Day services or any kind of public art that was historical in nature.

“It was quite a bit bigger than most projects we usually do but we are very happy with the result.”

In addition to spearheading the project to bring this new memorial to Blackfalds, Carleton also authored a book to go with it. She compiled the stories of the individuals immortalized on the memorial so that people would be able to remember more than just their names.

“Most people today if they read the

names on (the monument) they wouldn’t know who they were or anything about them,” said Carleton.

It is important to have monuments such as this and recognize the sacrifice made by Canada’s veterans, she added, especially because they often don’t get the recognition they deserve. Carleton said that members of her generation and those younger will probably never fully understand what veterans sacrificed so Canadians could enjoy the freedoms and privileges we do today.

Those who spoke at the unveiling ceremony were of a similar mind. The ceremony was full of emotional speeches from politicians and veterans. Each individual who spoke made mention of the sacrifices made by veterans and the important of remembering.

Member of Parliament Blaine Calkins, Member of the Legislative Assembly Rod Fox and Mayor Melodie Stol all spoke at the unveiling. Calkins said that the only way for people to repay the country’s veterans is by remembering.

“We owe our veterans an enormous debt,” said Calkins. “A debt that can only be paid through remembrance and never forgetting the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.”

Fox commented on how Canada would not be the same as it is today without the sacrifices made by veterans.

“In many ways, we are here because they were there – and we can never forget,” said Fox. On the veteran side, Lieutenant Colonel Andrew C. Moffat and Royal Canadian Legion past President Hugh Greene were in attendance for the unveiling. Two of the surviving veterans named on the monument, Robert Evans and Ken Long (both from Lacombe), as well as several other members of the Legion were also in attendance. Moffat spoke of how the monument is more than just a symbol of remembrance, it is also a symbol of love.

“It emits a love almost beyond understanding,” said Moffat. “The love of 85 people who were prepared to give themselves for their country and their neighbours and compatriots. That sort of love is very special and very rare.”

After the speeches, the monument was unveiled and those in attendance paid their respects with a moment of silence.

Wreathes and poppies were then laid at the monument at the close of the ceremony.

Blackfalds holds celebration for Abbey Centre grand opening Excitement continues to build in community for new recreation facility

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express When the Abbey Centre first opened its doors to the public on March 31st, it was a cause for much celebration in Blackfalds.

Now that the facility is fully operational and a grand opening was held last weekend, there is even more cause to celebrate.

‘WE NEED THESE KINDS OF FACILITIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES TO MATCH THE EXPECTATIONS OF THE RESIDENTS.’ BLAINE CALKINS After cutting the ribbon to officially declare the facility open on May 24th, Mayor Melodie Stol said the day came with a strong feeling of accomplishment.

“It’s a very proud day.

It’s a proud moment for our council, it’s a proud moment in Blackfalds’ history.”

Stol also commented on how the opening of such a multi-faceted recreation facility in Blackfalds shows how much the community has grown.

She said Blackfalds is a community that stands on its own merits and not just a bedroom community of Lacombe or Red Deer.

of how a community can pull together and create a facility to be proud of. He also said such facilities are a necessity for young, growing communities like Blackfalds.

“Albertans work hard and pay our share of taxes,” said Calkins.

“We also like to play hard when we get our time off.

We need these kinds of facilities in our communities

to match the expectations of the residents.”

Member of the Legislative Assembly Rod Fox was also like-minded.

“Blackfalds really does encapsulate the Alberta spirit,” said Fox. “What we have here is a community that pulled together to build what they wanted and what they needed. That’s exactly what Albertans do, they don’t wait

Carol Simpson, president of the Blackfalds Fieldhouse Society, reiterated Stol’s feelings that the grand opening imparted a sense of accomplishment to all those involved.

She said the Abbey Centre represented the completion of a goal set five years ago.

“There is a sense of finality to it,” said Simpson.

She added that it was even somewhat hard to believe that goal had been reached.

“It’s very surreal.”

For Simpson, the grand

opening marked an end as well as a beginning. With the Abbey Centre complete, the Blackfalds Fieldhouse Society will be dissolving at the end of the month.

This combination of events made the opening an emotional event for Simpson.

She also said that the finished facility represented what she imagined it would when the project began as an idea five years ago.

“I had high expectations for us,” said Simpson. “We aimed high.”

She added she is proud of the community as a whole for seeing this proj-

ect through. “I am proud of us,” said Simpson. “And when I say us I mean Blackfalds.”

Blackfalds celebrated the grand opening by offering free use of the facility over the weekend, a concert featuring Serena Ryder on Saturday evening and a fireworks spectacle to top things off Saturday night.

CACHS helps funding at Nicaragua school

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Last Friday, students, staff and supportive parents from Central Alberta Christian High School (CACHS) in Lacombe participated in a fundraising run to benefit a project through the mission organization EduDeo Ministries. The run was organized by students in CACHS’ Sports Performance course, run by Athletic Director Travis Eggink.

As part of the course requirements, students must do something to involve themselves in community leadership and personal development. This year, students decided to support a school building project in Nicaragua.

Last year’s project was a fundraising run to benefit the MS Society and raised more than $2,000.

Eggink said this year, students wanted to do something similar but also something that spoke more to their mission as a Christian school. While it is important to support local initiatives as well, Eggink said this project was about building and being part of the Christian community on a global scale.

“That’s kind of the idea, for

the students to see themselves as part of something much bigger,” he said. He added that he thinks this is important for development of young people.

“I think a lot of our society teaches us to focus on ourselves.

So it’s an opportunity to see themselves serving others.”

Eggink went on to say that the project also combines physical fitness with doing good on another level and gives sports and fitness a little more legitimacy.

He explained such programs are often dismissed as ‘jock classes’ when they are essential to personal health and can be used to benefit others as well.

“It’s important,” said Eggink.

Students enjoy being part of the project, he said, but often need a push to get going. He added that getting out into the community and fundraising for the run, what he identified as the personal development part of the project, was the most difficult part for many.

“That, I think, is the biggest struggle for students.” He added that while he understands not all the students will reach their fundraising goals, the important thing is that they try.

“I just want to see a full effort.”

Runners completed a 5 km, 7.5 km or 10 km loop for the run.

Funds raised from the run will go towards building new classrooms in the Monte Horeb Baptist School in Magua, Nicaragua.

Monte Horeb Baptist has committed to covering 20% of the cost

and CACHS’ goal was to raise the remaining $3,100. Eggink said final counts for fundraiser were not yet finished, but he estimated CACHS exceeded that goal.

Youth Wildlife Group to host annual fishing day

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express The 11th annual Youth Fishing Day will be held this year on June 7th, courtesy of the Lacombe Fish & Game Association.

“We’re trying to get kids involved with hunting and fishing and the conservation of those resources,” said Bernie Street, chair of the fishing department.

“This is one way to do it.”

The idea behind the annual fishing day is to ex-

pose youth to outdoor skills and responsibility that accompany the sport of fishing.

The Len Thompson Trout Pond in Lacombe hosts the children as they stock the lake with trout and help to develop the fishing skills of youngsters.

Street said the kids really tend to enjoy being a part of the stocking process and that, “It’s nice to see the smiles on their faces while they do it. We’re trying to get the kids outdoors in-

stead on being on computers and other electronics.

“Any time they spend outdoors doing any of these events is quite helpful for them, so we encourage it as much as we can.”

The activity day began when the English Estates retention pond was being built, and the (at the time) Town of Lacombe came together with the Fish & Game Association to devise a day to get youth involved in conservation efforts with a hands-on experience.

The youth fishing day is open to boys and girls of all ages. Some members are as old as 16, but Street said no one would be turned away if they were a bit older - 17 or 18 - and had an interest in the activities.

“We have a pretty good mix of boys and girls. Usually the parents come and help them out, but we have fishing gear and instructions for anybody that’s new to the game,” said Street.

The events will begin at 10 a.m. with a little socialization among the fishers.

At 11 a.m., a representative from the Len Thompson Trout Pond will arrive to walk the kids through the lake-stocking process.

The Fish and Game Association also hosts other events for youth in the area.

They offer a camping trip with the Cenalta Youth Conservation, which is a six-night, five-day camp that focuses on firearm safety, archery, water safety and hunting education.

“I am enjoying it. We’ve had enough participation with our members that it doesn’t make events (such as the youth fishing day) that hard to do,” he said.

Street emphasised the fishing day is open to anyone with an interest. “We enjoy doing it and sure encourage anybody who wants to come out to do so.”

The market for apps have become so flooded in fact, that often users need to sort through a lot of junk to get any of the useful ones.

Therefore, when a useful app is launched, it spreads and bears talking about.

For example, weather apps have become so common that they now come standard on most smart phones. It makes sense that the topic people converse about the most would also be topic dealt with by one of the world’s most popular app. Now, the Government of Alberta has taken the weather app and combined it with data from Environment Canada and the Alberta Forecasting Centre to make it useful.

In response to Albertans asking for more informa-

tion about flood conditions after last summer’s devastating floods, the government has launched the Alberta Rivers app. This app will combine data about the weather, such as precipitation amounts, with data about Alberta’s river ways, like maps that chart their levels, so as to give something of a forecast of how likely the event of a flood in any area would be.

This new technology should prove useful to Albertans today. During the floods of 2013, it seemed the biggest issue was how fast things occurred.

There was little warning and what warning did come left little room for preparation. Not only that, many victims were caught offguard by just how devastating the floods would be when they did come. When the evacuation orders came in High River, some residents only piled their belongings on the highest shelves of their homes, believing they would be able to return in a day or two.

This new app would give Albertans notice as to when a flood might happen, how likely it is to happen and how much flooding could be expected. It’s an interesting combination of technologies that fills an unmet need and is an idea that we would like to see applied elsewhere as well.

The Government of Alberta already has an Al-

berta Wildfire app that combines weather conditions with wildfire conditions within the province and allows users to report a wildfire as well. Another great combination might be weather conditions and traffic.

Every winter we watch the weather and worry about how bad the snow will affect the roads. Road

condition and traffic apps already exist, but why not combine them so drivers have a better idea of how the road conditions have affected traffic and much extra time they should give themselves to reach their destinations.

Basically, an interesting idea with potential has been stumbled onto here.

Let’s see how far it can go.

Golf is a game with a pretty steep learning curve and even those who play regularly and enjoy the sport curse about bad shots or even bad games. Any golfer who can go 18 holes without uttering a single four-letter word possesses a level of discipline and restraint bordering on superhuman.

While the goal and concept of goal is simple, the game as a whole is not and it is that aspect of the sport that frustrates experienced and inexperienced players alike. It

is also what deters a lot of people from playing the sport at all.

To that effect, a golf course near Beaumont has introduced larger holes not quite twice the size of regular holes. The rationale behind the move is that the larger cups will make targets bigger while putting (in fact, while shooting at all) and thereby make the game easier.

An easier game would translate into lower, better scores and more interest for the sport in general.

The rationale seems sound and being a bit of a duffer myself, I’m not opposed to any and all help that is offered to improve my score.

However, I am always wary when it comes to changing rules to make any sport or game easier.

This opens up a discussion that exists outside of just golf, how much can a game be altered before it ceases to be the same game?

Skill is something that exists in all sports. It is, for the most part, the determining factor in who wins or loses a game in any competitive sport.

Developing skill is what all athletes work towards to excel in their

respective sports. As any athlete will tell you, becoming skillful in a respective discipline is what makes all the hard work and training worth it. The feeling of accomplishment that comes with being able to count yourself among the elite is what athletes strive for.

As such, I usually shy away from changes that make any sport ‘easier’ as it takes away from the skill needed for athletes to excel at any sport. I’m a competitive person and while I support ideas that encourage athletes to develop their skills, I see simply changing the rules to make it ‘easier’ for those athletes as an unfair shortcut that slights those athletes who do put in hard work and effort to get to where they are.

In late March of this year, a marketing company tried to introduce a wacky-shaped hockey puck called the ‘Aalto’ puck that bounces around instead of shooting and passing straight. To disguise this ludicrous idea from being the simple marketing ploy it was the company justified the puck by saying it introduced a random element of

chance to the game, thereby leveling the playing field.

Many people, my friends and I included, openly (and justly) mocked the idea. Some thought it so ridiculous they tried to justify it as an early April Fools joke.

The thing is, playing fields in competitive sports aren’t supposed to be level, that’s why they are competitive. Instead of chance, there is skill that determines who is better.

However, one of my friends pointed out that a game of hockey with randomly bouncing puck might be fun too, so why not make it another sport in its own right?

Keep traditional hockey as it is for those who value skill and practice and give the Aalto puck to those who are just looking for kicks.

I think the same works (though perhaps on a different level) for this golf dilemma. Make the holes bigger for those who want a more relaxed, just-for-fun experience at the links. For those who want to be and stay competitive, keep the rules as they are. news@lacombeexpress.com

Letters to the editor

Be warned when crossing railway tracks in Lacombe Has anyone noticed anything different about the many trains that pass through our City on a daily basis?

For over a decade trains that traveled on the north/south CPR main line between Calgary and Edmonton were restricted by a Transport Canada imposed slow order of 20mph over the level crossing at mile 18.47 Leduc Sub. That actual location is the Hwy. 12 level crossing in the centre of Lacombe.

The purpose for that ‘slow order’ occurred at 8:45 a.m. on Oct. 6th, 2001.

A Northern Truck Lines truck, hauling a tank and pup-tank filled with Liquid Petroleum Gas stopped at the traffic light governing westbound traffic on Hwy. 12.

There is only 27 ft. of room from the stop line and the west rail of the track so the loaded tanks were not clear of the track but in fact sat directly blocking that very track. Train #403 was approaching Lacombe at this very time, at the posted allowable train speed of 55mph. The engineer on the train had a clear view of the situation and placed the train braking sys-

tem in emergency, effectively applying the brakes on every car of the train as hard as they can go. He knew that his train would take almost a mile to stop and impact was virtually imminent. Eastbound motorists, waiting at the crossing with the warning lights flashing, saw the train and heard its whistle blowing. They could see the potential accident about to happen before their very eyes so they were backing up, trying to escape from their extremely dangerous position. Their activities got the attention of the truck driver who now reacted and pulled westbound, through the red light, as fast as he could trying frantically to get his explosive cargo clear of the track.

The locomotive engineer, who had done all that he could, continued to blow the engine whistle until the last minute then flung himself on the floor of the cab certain that he and his crew would be killed.

Witnesses estimated that the locomotive missed the back of the pup-tank by no more than 18.

That near collision was a wake-up call

Family historian addresses inaccuracies I would like to respond to the article by Howard Fredeen entitled ‘George Mobley, pioneer builder of Lacombe’ dated May 8.

While the bulk of his article is generally correct, there are some errors that I wish to address.

George Gale Mobley arrived in the Lacombe/Gull lake area in approximately 1896 or 1897 and first settled at Gull Lake. I know this because he married my grandmother, Anne Laidlaw Fernie on Jan. 5, 1898 at Wood Lea - Rev. John Fernie’s home just west of town.

The marriage was performed

by Rev. White who replaced Rev. Fernie when he left Lacombe.

They lived at his cabin at Gull Lake where my father John Fernie Mobley was born April 14, 1900. Tax records show that George, Anne and my father were living in Lacombe by 1903.

Francis (Frank) Harry did not come to Lacombe with George Gale at that time. He remained in Fairfield, Spokane Co., Washington. George Gale had two hardware stores in Washington. One was in Cheney and one in Fairfield, Spokane Co., which Frank was operating until at least 1895.

Then he moved to Lacombe. His first son Harry Colvin Mobley was born in Fairfield March 8, 1894.

George Gale was only in Cripple Creek for a very short time but his older brother John Chester Mobley was an early pioneer rancher there. George and John, in the mid-1880s, were in the Kiowa and Castle Rock, Ebert and Douglas Co. Colorado where they were doing some land spec-

ulating amongst other things.

John owned a saloon and billiard parlor in Kiowa.

George Gale and Mary Francis Reed had four sons and three daughters. The youngest son, Charles William Mobley was in Lacombe as of March 31, 1901.

About 1906/07 he moved to Salmon Arm and then to Sunnybrae, B.C. preceding his father by at least seven years. Charles was an early pioneer of the Sunnybrae area.

George Gale and Anne Laidlaw Fernie had three children, John Fernie, Victor Laidlaw and Margaret Anne Elizabeth Mobley.

George Gale and family left Lacombe form the CPR station on May 27, 1913 for Salmon Arm, B.C. The reason they left, my father told me, is their home burned down and they lost almost all their personal effects and family documents.

Reportedly, Frank was going to head for the Klondike but ended up in Atlin were there was a gold rush going on. Previously to his partnership with D.G. Stewart, he was successful in the mining business in Atlin and mainly Discovey, B.C. My family has numerous ties to the Lacombe area through the Fernie, Veach, Jackson, Bourne, McNeil, Craddock and Tweedie families.

While I appreciate writers producing bits of local history regarding my family, I would appreciate a little more research and accuracy be exercised.

They realized that the Hwy. 12 level crossing, at the intersection of Hwys. 12 and 2A, was extremely dangerous because of the traffic light and the tendency of drivers to become trapped on the track while stopped by that very light. They mandated that trains could not exceed 20mph, over that crossing, until the Railway and the Road Authority made significant improvements to the safety of that location. We have all witnessed vehicles of all types becoming trapped on the crossing awaiting for a traffic signal to proceed.

Therein lies the entire safety issue of Hwy. 12 crossing in a nutshell. As motorists we must never pull onto any railway track unless there is room for us to pull off.

For well over a decade every train passing through Lacombe had slowed to 20mph. Then the province, the City and the railway made significant improvements to the entire length of Hwy. 2A passing through our City. These improvements especially included the railway crossing, with improved exit lanes and lengthened

train approach warning zones. Early this year Transport Canada deemed the 20mph slow order no longer needed and in February of this year the train speeds were increased to their previous limit of 55mph.

With little notice or advance warnings of any kind the trains went from 20mph to 55mph overnight.

Well people please let this serve as your warning. Fences have been erected along the track through Lacombe. The next step for our City Fathers will be to apply for an anti-whistling by-law allowing the trains to pass through Lacombe at 55mph while not sounding the whistle at any of our three level crossings. As motorists and pedestrians alike we must exercise much more diligence while crossing railway tracks. From the early 1980s until the present there have been seven accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians with multiple fatalities in our City limits. Let’s all make sure that there are no more.

The battle has not been lost in raising our children Not too many years ago it did not take a village to raise a child.

It took a father and mother who were willing to invest the time and effort necessary to raise up a human being to the point where that person was a valued asset to the ‘village.’

There is a pervasive trend in society today that encourages parents to morally relieve themselves of their responsibility to raise their own children knowing that the village will provide social programs to act as ersatz parents who will quietly assume the parental role in default.

I level no criticism at all on these programs or those who administer them. My complaint is directed at those who take an immoral advantage of this social provision and abuse the taxpayers generous support (and indeed I wish it could be even more generous).

A line from a well-known song says “The first love is the greatest” and when the first love is alcohol, drugs, gambling addictions or any other perversion, the individuals who are supposed to benefit from that love,

the children, are immediately and often tragically affected and ultimately lose the most.

When natural affection is lacking, chaos ensues and entropy prevails. By-products of this corrosive attitude include an environment of mistrust and suspicion, general incompetence, failure to meet even the lowest moral standard and purveyance of a subjective certainty that those who do adhere to a moral code are to be mocked, ridiculed and judged with censorious pessimism.

Before it is contended that I am misunderstanding and misapplying Hillary Clinton’s book titled It Takes a Village to Raise a Child (the title itself is alleged to be a plagiarism of an old African tribal proverb) I must assert that I am addressing the much more immediate and local issue of personal, familial responsibility.

What truly loving father among us would intentionally put his child at risk or fail to protect his child from harm or threat? If you are a family man you are by historic definition and with no criminal connotation, a ‘danger-

ous’ man and if you don’t view yourself to be such, I say you are abrogating your parental responsibility to let the world know that those under your care are secure, protected and above all valued.

I can certainly understand how parents feel psychologically overwhelmed and functionally debilitated by the general malaise of ingratitude and the media driven attack on their dignified purpose. Fathers are portrayed to be comedic buffoons. Mothers to be self-referential shrews and children to be agents of chaos licensed by a parental surrender to the new religion of ‘me’.

When anyone who aspires to higher values find themselves in opposition to those who have no moral certitude, we can view it as an opportunity to engage in collegial and hopefully remedial discussion. I, in the most literal sense, thank God that the battle has not yet been lost. Some wounds to the family structure have been sustained but none so far are fatal.

Lacombe is already short (extremely short) of ice time and Lacombe minor hockey teams from our big ‘city’ are renting ice at the Village of Clive for practices and home games. A group to bring Ju-

nior A hockey to Lacombe wants to help, not create additional shortage. Spending $14 to $15 million to upgrade the arena does not add more ice.

Lacombe simply needs more ice. At least one more ice surface.

Robotic-surgery still requires skilled hands Dr. Harvey Cushing, one of Harvard’s great neurosurgeons, once remarked, “There is no such thing as minor surgery, but there are a lot of minor surgeons.”

He wanted to drive home the point that you should always be careful about who does your operation.

But when Cushing made this remark, he had never heard of robotic-surgery.

So what would he say now?

A report in the Journal for Healthcare Quality analyzes complications that occurred during one type of robotic-surgery between the years 2000 and 2012.

During that time there were 174 injuries and 71 deaths.

Another study at Johns Hopkins University revealed what has long been suspected, that surgical complications are not always reported in robotic surgery and that reports represent just ‘the tip of the iceberg.’

But, one could make the same remark about non-robotic surgical procedures.

JONES of Bordeau, in France, announced at the World Congress of Surgeons that he had removed a gallbladder (cholecystectomy) using optical instruments through small incisions.

This became known as ‘key-hole surgery.’

Now, a large number of operations are done by this method. Many women are saved from hysterectomy when fibroids can be removed by this procedure.

Skilled surgeons can even remove a large segment of a cancerous bowel by robotic surgery.

This operative approach has been a great boon for patients. Without a large incision there’s less pain, speedier healing and shorter time in hospital. But there’s a huge difference between opening the abdomen with a scalpel for a

direct look at the diseased organ, and performing keyhole surgery.

Harvey Cushing would quickly spot one of the problems with keyhole surgery. Namely, that the term tends to indicate that using tiny incisions also means a simple, uncomplicated way to perform operations.

Unfortunately, this is not always the case and small keyhole incisions can be associated with catastrophic complications.

Doctors performing robotic surgery have to become adjusted to an entirely new approach whether removing an appendix or a segment of large bowel.

Rather than holding a scalpel, surgeons watch a video camera while manipulating a variety of grasping, cutting and suturing devices. It’s a vastly different ball game with a steep learning curve.

During this learning curve there’s a greater chance of surgical complication. For example, inserting instruments through the abdominal wall can cause injury to a major blood vessel or bowel even

though safeguards are taken.

Keyhole gallbladder surgery over the years has been the source of major complications. The common bile duct is a small tube carrying bile from the liver to the bowel and it’s the one that has been most frequently injured.

If not repaired at the time of surgery it can lead to jaundice and death. In one study that analyzed 613,706 keyhole gallbladder operations, 0.39% suffered this injury.

Dr. Cushing would tell you that before roboticsurgery was available, an old dictum held true, that practice makes perfect whether you’re a surgeon

or a plumber. For robotic-surgery this warning should be made in big red capital letters. I remember well learning quickly to use a scalpel to open an abdomen. My learning experience with keyhole surgery was more prolonged.

Nevertheless, looking at the total picture, there’s no doubt I’d prefer to have my gallbladder removed by robotic surgery.

But I’d agree only if it required removal. Studies show that about 10% of North Americans have gallstones. Today, with the increased use of ultrasound, many gallstones are accidentally discovered during tests to diagnose other conditions. In gen-

eral, gallstones not causing trouble are best left to the crematorium.

As another Harvard professor once remarked, “Remember, it’s impossible to make a patient feel better who doesn’t have any symptoms.”

Dr. Cushing’s final advice would be to always go to surgery on a first-class ticket. Usually, your family doctor can direct you to the right hands. If not, be sure to do your homework and find a surgeon who has experience in roboticsurgery.

Help! I need illustrations to define faith Have you ever considered how hard it is to define words like love, hope, or even faith? Shouldn’t we at least have a definition of faith, since this is a ‘faith column’? As a Christian I turn to God’s word to define faith. “Faith is the substance (assurance) of things hoped for, the evidence (certainty) of things not seen.” (Heb. 11:1) Sometimes definitions can be a clear as mud, which is why Hebrews 11 gives over 15 illustrations of faith to explain it. Actually, throughout the Bible God illustrates what faith is, especially faith in Jesus.

Why does God use and give us so many illustrations of believing in Jesus? First, faith is impossible without God. Unbelief comes naturally to us; faith is unnatural. Faith is given to us by God. (Ephesians 2:8) Second, everyone is different. We all have different situations and personalities; if God had only given us one picture of faith, it might not have suited everyone in every situation.

Would you trust an unreliable bridge to carry you across a raging river?

4. Looking to Jesus (Is. 45:22): Instead of shutting our eyes to Jesus, we see Him as a suitable and perfect Savior in and through His word.

5. Resting in Jesus (Heb. 4:10,11): Instead of laboring and sweating to build our own little shack, we give up all our works and walk through the open door of the palace of salvation He has already built and there rest in perfect peace with God. 6. Receiving Jesus (John 1:12): Instead of trying to give Jesus our best efforts, we simply receive Jesus and His perfect work. Faith is an instrument like an IV tube transferring fluids

into your body or an umbilical cord connecting an infant in the womb to the strength and nourishment of his mother.

7. Calling upon Jesus (Rom. 10:13): Instead of ignoring or refusing to pick up His call, perhaps even cursing on the line or hanging up on Him; we start calling upon His name for everything.

Web site to show gratitude for paramedics A web site launched this week by Alberta Health Services provides a way for Albertans to send messages of thanks to Emergency Medical Services paramedics who have helped them. The web site, www.thankaparamedic.com, allows the public to share messages of gratitude and appreciation for EMS staff who provide emergency care to almost 1,000 Albertans daily. By providing a few key details of an emergency event, patients and families helped by EMS can also choose to have their message shared directly with the paramedics who provided their care.

The web site was launched to coincide with National Paramedic Services Week. In Alberta, the week is dedicated to recognizing about 4,000 EMS paramedics, emergency communications officers and other EMS staff members who respond to 400,000 EMS calls a year. This year’s theme is

Local baseball player looks to make impression

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express For Andrew MacCuag, baseball is about growth and improvement.

MacCuag is one of the Lacombe players for the Red Deer AAA Bantam Braves. He started playing baseball around the age of five.

He said his parents signed him up because a lot of his friends were also playing.

Now at 14 and playing his second year of AAA baseball, MacCuag said he has stayed interested in the sport because no two games are the same and he likes how each game is a new challenge.

At the encouragement of his friends and family, MacCuag decided to try out for the Red Deer AAA team last season.

“BATTING I FIND A LOT HARDER BECAUSE IT’S JUST YOU AND THE PITCHER, BUT THE PITCHER HAS EIGHT FRIENDS. YOU’RE KIND OF DOING ALL YOU CAN AND SOME DAYS YOU WILL BREAK THREE BATS AND GET THREE HITS AND SOME DAYS YOU WILL HIT THREE ROCKETS AND GET NO HITS. IT’S JUST HARD BEING ALONE AGAINST THAT MANY PEOPLE.” ANDREW MACCUAG MacCuag said he also had a desire to see how far his skills could take him.

“I wanted to be playing at as high a level of baseball as I could, so I thought I would give it a shot.”

At his first tryout, MacCuag was quite timid, he said.

He explained that most of the players were larger, older and more experienced than him, which MacCuag found intimidating.

“I was really nervous, it was really scary,” he said. “It felt like everyone had been playing AAA for longer than me.”

As such, MacCuag said he was pleased when he learned he did make the team. He added it was a great confidence boost.

“It was awesome. A great feeling of accomplishment.”

The Braves have only recently started playing their league games and MacCuag said his team has made a strong start for

Being able to contribute to the team is something that is very important to MacCuag.

While teamwork is important in every team sport, MacCuag commented on what it means to him in baseball where at bat, players must rely on their own abilities

“Batting I find a lot harder because it’s just you and the pitcher, but the pitcher has eight friends,” said MacCuag.

“You’re kind of doing all you can and some days you will break three bats and get three hits and some days you will hit three rockets and get no hits. “ It’s just hard being alone against that many people.”

MacCuag added that he feels playing baseball helps him grow not only as an athlete, but as a person. He said being on a team teaches you things that you can apply

This year, MacCuag hopes to make Team Alberta and win another provincial championship.

Blackfalds outscored by Sylvan Lake

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express The Blackfalds Bantam Warriors were not themselves last week.

Last Thursday, the Warriors hosted the Sylvan Lake Buccaneers, who defeated Blackfalds with a score of 7-1.

Coach Randy Trevors said last week’s performance was not typical of the Warriors.

“They played alright,” said Trevors. “Tonight was one of those off games.”

Last Thursday’s game was match of offence versus defense. While the Warriors displayed a solid defense, the Buccaneers favoured a powerful offence.

Blackfalds did a good job fending off the aggressive Sylvan Lake attacks for the most part, but even the best armour has weak points and the Buccaneers found them.

After opening up scoring, Sylvan Lake continued to hammer away at the Warriors defense, eventually wearing them down

enough to open up more opportunities for scoring. Without a strong offense themselves, Blackfalds was unable to close the scoring gap, even though their defensive play kept that gap fairly close.

Sylvan Lake opened scoring in the first period, and their high-pressure offence kept Blackfalds from holding onto the ball long enough to score themselves. However, the strong Warrior defense prevented the Buccaneers from scoring any more in the first and the period ended 1-0.

In the second, Sylvan Lake again was first on the scoreboard. Blackfalds would get their first and only point about halfway through the period, but it would be quickly answered by the Buccaneers who would spend the rest of the period and the next expanding their lead on the Warriors.

A lack of offense was probably the most significant factor in Blackfalds’ loss to Sylvan Lake. Trevors said that usually the team’s offence is much stronger, but was off this game.

Because the offense was not doing well

this game, the team decided to put stronger emphasis on the defensive play, added Trevors. However, he admitted that even with a strong defense, games can’t be won without offence.

The amount of time the Warriors spent in the penalty box didn’t help them out much either. Again, Trevors said this is not something typical of the team and usually discipline is not a problem for Blackfalds. He added that sometimes, accidents that cause penalties are unavoidable.

Penalties are more likely to be called against hard-hitting teams as well, and the Warriors certainly can count themselves in that category. Blackfalds was not at all afraid to get physical during the game, and their hitting was one of their biggest strengths. Sylvan Lake played a very physical game as well, but not quite to the same degree.

Not only were the Warriors willing to hit, they weren’t afraid of getting hit either, showing great endurance while holding onto the ball. Strong hitting can form

the defensive backbone in teams of many contact sports and Trevors said hitting and taking a hit is something that he has worked on a lot with the team this season.

Other than the game on Thursday, Trevors said the Warriors have played very strongly this season. He said that they are a well-rounded team having strong defense, goaltending (which was also on form last Thursday night) and usually offence.

However, Trevors also said Blackfalds has lost the last few games. He said right now the key to becoming successful again is to win some games and rebuild momentum, something he is confident his team can accomplish.

“You win some you lose some,” said Trevors. “They’ll jump back.”

The Lacoka Junior B Tier II lacrosse team entered the past weekend with a 5-1 record but faced a stiff challenge against two strong teams in the league.

On Saturday the Locos travelled to Calgary to take on the Axemen with only nine players.

The teams traded goals early with each team scoring twice in the first 10 minutes of the game.

Calgary then went on a run scoring four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead heading into the first intermission.

Despite the short bench the Lacoka team battled hard but still trailed 13-7 after two.

Both teams would add two goals in the third to make the final 15-9.

Dustin Bell added to his league leading scoring totals with five goals and one assist.

Riley Workman got on the score sheet with four goals before getting into some penalty trouble and being ejected from the game in the second

period.

Carson Barnes had four helpers, Lliam Ventry with two and Ryder Hawthorne had one assist to round out the Lacoka scoring.

Lacoka had 40 minutes in penalties while the Axemen had 47 minutes in roughly played match.

On Sunday, the Lacombe Hardwood sponsored Lacoka Locos played host to their division rivals the Red Deer Renegades.

Workman scored just 14 seconds into the game to give the Locos the early lead.

Red Deer would score four straight to take the lead but with two goals in 28 seconds in the last minute of the first the Locos would trail only 4-3 after the first.

Lacoka would score another goal in the first minute of the second to tie the game.

The teams would trade goals throughout the second in a back and forth match.

The Locos would take a 10-9 lead into the second intermission.

ARTS & LEISURE Author’s book details family difficulties after war

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Last week, as part of the festivities for the annual Spring Gala at The Gallery on Main, local author Margrit de Graff did a reading from her latest book And He Came Back Alive!, a story about her father and his return from a Russian prisoner of war camp two years after the end of the Second World War. De Graff grew up in Germany and was 11-years-old when her father was drafted in the Second World War. She was in her teens throughout the war and was a member of the Hitler Youth.

And He Came Back Alive! tells the story of how her father was captured at the Russian front and returned home after being gone for eight years. It also details how difficult it was for de Graff’s father to re-adjust and how his family, particularly her mother, adapted to his return as well.

De Graff said writing the book was an emotional experience for her but also that it was a story she felt needed to be told. She said she started writing the story for her children, who being born in Canada (all 12 of them) had never learned about the war from the German point of view.

“They’ve only seen this side of these conflicts and I think it’s important to see them from both sides,” said de Graff. She added that being a German-born Canadian, she has a unique perspective on the war. “I have one foot in each corner. I’ve been here since 1951 so I’m very Canadian, but still German too. So I see both sides.” de Graff has written three books before And He Came Back Alive, all of them self-published.

She said she chose this route because having books published and printed through a professional publisher can often take years.

“I don’t have the time to deal with publishers,” said de Graff.

Now working on her fifth book, de Graff said she is starting to consider getting a professional publisher. In addition to her books, de Graff also has a number of short stories that have been included in 10 different anthologies.

Currently, de Graff is writing a book with the working title “Start@80” which is about her own experiences of life after 80 years of age. She said the project

expanded to include stories of others as well after she competed in the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games last year and met many more interesting people.

De Graff, now 87, said she has started an entirely new life since turning 80. Just to give one example, she is currently training to compete as a cyclist in the Canada 55 Plus Summer Games this August even though her bronze medal finish at last year’s Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games didn’t technically qualify. However, de

Graff was still invited to compete.

“I guess I set a good example that you can do things after 80,” said de Graff. She added that, while she has been a writer all her life, it wasn’t until the age of 80 that she started writing seriously either.

All of de Graff’s books are non-fiction and most are about her own experiences. She said that while she takes a bit of creative liberty with some of her writing, she has too many life stories to share to go about mak-

“My life has been too long and too full, I don’t have time for fantasies,” said de Graff. She added that she also does a lot of research when writing her books to ensure accuracy and that this is particularly true when writing “And He Came Back Alive!”

Red Deer’s Cornerstone Youth Theatre stages Hercules Large troupe delves into famed tale of Greek mythology

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Cornerstone Youth Theatre is gearing up to unveil their latest theatrical production – Hercules – A Hero’s Tale – opening Friday evening at the First Church of the Nazarene in Red Deer.

Curtain is 7 p.m.

Additional shows, including several matinee performances, run through to June 8th.

Director Evan Rein, who co-directed Grimm Fairytales earlier this year, is in the director’s chair this time around.

Cornerstone Youth Theatre produces three musicals per year.

As to the production, it is described as Greek mythology at its best featuring Hercules, an ‘awkward hero’, a mentoring sidekick

named Platie and an ‘anything but helpless’ love interest nicknamed Nani.

Audiences will enjoy watching this boy grow into the man he wants to be as he learns to use his might for what is right.

“He’s a young boy who is trying to find a place to belong. What he’s really after is a destiny,” says Rein.

“He doesn’t know what he wants or where he should go, so he’s trying to find his place in the world.”

He doesn’t really fit in at home, and finds himself getting into trouble. “So his adoptive father sends him on a journey so he can find his destiny. Along the way he runs into Zeus, his actual father, and finds out that he is indeed different than his peers.

“Zeus explains that in order for him to regain his immortality, he must solve

reach that goal. Of course, there is plenty more packed in along the way, too.

As Rein points out, his approach to directing the show proved quite collaborative. “My idea is that when we are rehearsing, the best idea wins,” he said.

“So if an actor comes up with an idea or choice that works then we will go with it. But I would always come to rehearsal with predetermined blocking and ideas of what I want the show to look like.

“But one of the great aspects of working in theatre is collaboration – there are so many different aspects to it.”

In planning the show, much of the shape of the story was of course mapped out in the script. The troupe is using a version that was penned by Andy Orr – husband to Cornerstone Youth Theatre’s artistic director Stephanie Orr. “He’s also the composer and the lyricist, so we’ve worked really closely with him,” explained Rein. The production also features a number of songs as well as choreography, so it’s a big undertaking. Not to mention the fact the cast numbers 54.

“It’s a mega-musical,” he adds with a laugh, noting there are about 23 tunes woven into the production’s plot. “It’s really a story of redemption and a story of

grace. I hope that it instills hope in the viewers.”

Rein, a Red Deer native, got his own start with Cornerstone Youth Theatre as a student. His passion for the theatre was sparked as a youngster when he and his brother would make home videos and try all kinds of visual effects. “I then went to a drama camp when I was 16, and that was actually my first stage experience.”

His first official acting stint with the troupe was back in 2010 in Charlotte’s Web. He continued on and wrapped up three more shows. After that he moved to Calgary and continued to act with Storybook Theatre and Evergreen Theatre. It was also while living in Calgary that he studied with the Company of Rogues Actors’ Studio and the Loose Moose Theatre Company.

He eventually returned to Red Deer, and took on the co-directing role with the aforementioned Grimm Fairytales this year. It proved a compelling shift away from acting, but a fulfilling one.

“As a director you are thinking about everything.

As an actor, you really only have one person to worry about, but as director you have the entire team to be thinking about.”

Cornerstone Youth Theatre provides local young people with an opportu-

nity to be involved in quality theatrical experiences where they can explore the world of the stage on many levels. Typically, plays feature youth from the ages of eight to 18.

There are also lots of opportunities to volunteer as well, organizers say.

This can mean family members being along for the ‘ride’ as their son or daughter hones his or her skills during the course of rehearsals leading up to a particular production. Ultimately, it provides a wide range of parts that fit with the various levels of experience and confidence the kids bring with them. But of course, it’s a joy to see how they grow as rehearsals unfold.

Rein said he is inspired by the cooperative nature of those involved, and as the play is about to be unveiled, it’s rewarding to see how all the elements fit together in a seamless production.

“It just amazes me how many aspects there are that I don’t even get to see,” he adds. “And then somehow it all comes together.”

New and exciting technology in the design world We had a fascinating discussion about tile grout in our staff meeting last week. You may laugh but I assure you it was exciting and revolutionary! In the design and flooring business it is always neat when new technology makes its way into our world.

If a tile or vinyl tile product is to fail, it is generally the fault of the grout. Grout has historically been a cement based product which is prone to cracking and moisture absorption.

Consider your sidewalks and driveways and the cracks and flaws that always seem to be apparent. We accept cracks on the sidewalk and even make up verse about them – step on a crack,

MECKLER break your mothers back comes to mind but we are not very excited about cracks in our cement grout! I don’t imagine any of you are jumping over your kitchen grout chanting nursery rhymes; you are probably on the phone to your nearest tile expert.

Mapei, one of the industry leaders in grout and tile installation materials has created the next level in grout for the increased

specialized applications we are seeing in design. The influx of vinyl tile has created the need for a more flexible grout to put in between those thinner tiles and Mapei has created Ultra Colour Plus grout which is perfect for vinyl tiles, pale natural stone and those of you who love the look of dark (yes even black) grout. This grout is a calcium based cement which is colour fast; this means that darker grouts won’t bleed colour onto porous tile and will not leave a colour haze when it is washed correctly.

The next level in grout – oh yes there is a next level, is called Flex Colour. This is an acrylic based, pre-mixed grout that requires

no sealer. Believe me, there was much rejoicing around this one from staff and installers alike as this will save a huge step and much agony for our clients. Because there is no mixing, patching and repairing is also possible as the colour of the grout will remain consistent with each pail.

Showers, bathrooms, any wet areas are a perfect candidate for this product as well as mosaics.

Have you ever tried to seal the grout around a mosaic tile? It’s kind of like trying to put a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle together that is all one colour; it kind of makes your eyes cross after awhile.

Acrylic-based grout is less prone to cracking in comparison to

Portland based products as it has a little bit of flex in it and will be more adaptable to subtle movements in the floor.

These fancy new grouts are selling at a premium so expect to pay a bit more at the pump for these labour saving products.

Personally, I would pay extra to not have to seal grout ever again and I am very excited to be able to use black grout once in awhile as I have avoided it like the plague for years. I can’t promise you will be as fascinated as I am but I think you will appreciate the new options!

TRAVEL An Aussie adventure perfect for families As my family landed in the land ‘Down Under’ we couldn’t help but immediately notice the diversity in landscape and lifestyle at each place we visited. In two weeks we saw everything from the spectacular Sydney Opera House in the heart of Sydney to the rolling hills and exquisite taste of the Hunter Valley Wineries. We also saw the secluded paradise of Hamilton Island and the beautiful countryside where if you look close enough you can spot a troop of kangaroos sleeping underneath the trees in the shade.

We were lucky to have the perfect weather while visiting however their winter and rainy season were just starting at the end of our trip. Australia’s seasons are opposite of ours so if you are looking to get away from the cold months of Alberta then November to February are the hottest months. However if you’re looking for hot but not +40C hot then between March and April may be for you.

If you or your family members are adventure seekers, then Australia has a wide variety of different sports and tours for you. Surfing and paddle boarding are big amongst the Aussies. We spent the day in Manly, a little beach suburb about a 30-minute ferry ride from Sydney. We were given lessons by outgoing locals whose only mission was to get you to at least stand up, if not have you riding waves by the end and had you laughing the whole time.

If water sports are not up your alley, tours such as sand tobogganing, skydiving, Sydney Harbour bridge climb and sailing the Whitsundays are all exciting options to explore.

Australians are all about the outdoors and for good reason. The hikes that are available to you throughout the country are unbelievable and the best part is that no matter your fitness level or age, there is generally an option for everyone.

Katoomba, just a short drive from Sydney, is home to the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area where you will find a million hectares of gorgeous forest trees so dense that you can see blue for miles. If you are looking for history, the Aboriginal heritage can be found everywhere you look. The story of the Three Sisters, the markings written in stone along paths and even ancient ceremonial sites, ensure there is no shortage of history at the Blue Mountains.

SPECTACULAR - A variety of sea life, such as this turtle, can be explored in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Now how could I write an article about Australia without talking about the Great Barrier Reef ? Vibrant coral, sea turtles, sting rays, even dolphins in the horizon can all be found during a tour to this breathtaking natural wonder. There are many places along the coast where you will find tours to snorkel or dive the reef.

However, I recommend reading up on the tour company before choosing which one to book with. The conservation of the reef is huge throughout Australia so you want to find a company that has the reefs ongoing interest at mind.

Australians are some of the most laid back people I have ever had the privilege to meet. In most towns and cities it is rare that shops and businesses are open past 4 p.m. (not including pubs of course). The simple reason for this is they would rather be out with family and friends enjoying a barbeque or laying on a beach with a cold beer. A person could really get used the carefree lifestyle of an Australian, which many people do. You will also meet people from all over the world from Canada to England to Bermuda and all points in between, whether they are travelling, going

to school or have become permanent residents, the people are diverse.

All in all Australia gave our family an amazing holiday and unforgettable memories. There is definitely too much history and adventure to pack into one trip.

I would go again tomorrow if I had it my way. Australians do an excellent job at making you feel at home and safe which is so important. So, to everyone who is looking for their next vacation, I would put Australia at the top of the list.
