Valley celebrates Seniors' Week • June 1–7 If you're 50 and over, the Alberni Valley is the place to be from June 1–7, as the community celebrates its senior population. What is a senior, you may ask? The answer is under much debate: many consider 50 to be the new 40, "Freedom 55" is a popular retirement slogan, you can start collecting your Old Age Pension at 65 (or is that now 67? The rules are changing so fast), it's hard to keep up. Just like you'll find it's hard to keep up with those who define themselves as seniors. Within these pages, you'll find a selection of the activities available throughout the community during Seniors Week.

Tickets available until noon on Wednesday, June 4. The Sunshine Club Quilting Group has put together a basket again this year, full of goodies. Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased in the Sunshine Club office, located in the Echo Centre lobby. This raffle is open to everyone and the proceeds will go to the Echo Sunshine Club. The winner will be drawn on June 4.

Cribbage Tournament at Echo Centre – for ages 50+ 12:45 pm Directors of the Sunshine Club Cribbage Tournament are organizing a special Seniors’ Week Cribbage Tournament on Monday, June 2 at Echo Centre. A maximum of 40 teams (80 people) are able to sign up at the Sunshine Club office at Echo Centre. Six games of crib will be played and then prizes will be awarded at the end of the six games, once the results are calculated. Coffee, tea and cookies will also be served following the cribbage games.

Get out on the water with outriggers Outrigger Canoeing on Sproat Lake - for ages 50+ 10:30 am
The Sproat Lake Canoe Club invites seniors to try out a paddle in an outrigger canoe. Our group meets at Victoria Quay at 10:20 am. At that time we organize ourselves so we can car pool and leave the Quay by 10:30 am. We drive out to the old West Bay Hotel and start paddling by 11:00 am. You don’t need to have any experience with canoeing to give this a try, so take advantage of this great opportunity to go canoeing on Sproat Lake with some experienced canoeists who will provide instruction, encouragement

Join staff from the City Works Department to view the City’s water infrastructure. You’ll board the van at Echo Centre at 9:00 am and travel to the City Works Department to view the automation (telemetry), then head to the China Creek intake, Bainbridge Lake, Bainbridge Pumphouse and Cowichan Reservoirs. The tour involves some walking, so please wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather.

The Sunshine Club floor curlers invite you to come out to Glenwood Centre to try this fabulous, fun sport. The floor curling “rocks” only weigh 2.5 pounds each and no sweeping is involved as in ice curling. Experienced floor curlers will be in attendance to give instruction and show you how to play. Registration is not necessary, just drop-in to Glenwood Centre and volunteers will be there to give an overview of the game and help set you up. This is an extremely popular activity with the Sunshine Club and it is a great opportunity to try
floor curling, pick up a few tips from experienced curlers and meet a lot of great people. Coffee, tea and goodies will be provided afterwards free of charge, compliments of the Floor Curlers. Woodworking at the Old Arena – for ages 50+ 10:00 – noon If you enjoy woodworking, why not join the volunteers from the Sunshine Club Woodworking Shop and check out their shop, located in the Industrial Heritage Society building. Uptown merchants celebrate seniors Cribbage Tournament sponsored by the Legion #293 – for seniors 55+ 1:00 pm
The Royal Canadian Legion #293 (located at 4680 Victoria Quay) will be hosting a cribbage tournament for all seniors in celebration of Seniors’ Week. Eight games of crib will be played and prizes will be awarded. There is no cost to play in this tournament and tickets are not required to pick up ahead of time. Fire and falls the focus of program The “Fire and Fall Prevention” Program, happening Thursday, June 5, was designed by the NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible. It is centered around 16 key safety messages—eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention. This program was developed by experts from national and local safety organizations as well as through focus group testing in high-fire-risk states. It targets a range of older adults and is meant to be of interest to active seniors. Did you know that seniors
aged 65 and over are twice as likely to be involved in a fire related incident? And by the age of 75, that risk increases to three times.- and four times by age 85. Fires and burns are not the only hazards that threaten older citizens. National statistics show that falls are the leading cause of death from unintentional injury in the home. Thirty percent of people age 65 and older are involved in falls each year. By focusing attention on these two serious issues, we can make a measurable improvement in the health and well-being of older

Laura Archambault, a resident at Echo Village, spent four years knitting up 44 brightly coloured squares for a special project. What is remarkable about her story is she started this project—a Blankets for Canada lap blanket—when she was 90 years old. Earlier this spring Archambault completed her squares, and Gail Morton volunteered to assemble the blanket before it was sent on.
Blankets for Canada is a non-denominational, non-profit organization that accepts knitted or crocheted squares, assembles them and delivers finished blankets to those who cannot afford to purchase warmth for themselves. Now 94, Archambault had the opportunity to cosy up in her finished blanket before Morton mailed it off.
