The City of Greenwood has been in discussion with a Kelowna-based company about the possibility of establishing a medical marijuana production facility in the old elementary school house on South Government Street. Mayor Nipper Kettle let the Times in on the proposal a couple of weeks ago when he confirmed that rumours circulating in the community were true. The story was also confirmed by Adam Sexsmith, co-founder and vice-president of production with CorCanna Group Inc. Postal service cut Midway and Greenwood lose Saturday service

Midway and Greenwood are both losing Saturday postal services next month. Canada Post used a form letter to alert its customers in the two communities that Saturday retail services will end effective June 21, 2014. Darren Smith, local area superintendent retail for Canada Post in the South Okanagan, Boundary and Similkameen, sent the letter to post boxes last week. He cited declining mail volumes and the need to make smart choices to maintain local service without becoming a burden on Canadian taxpayers. “We stand by our mandate of serving Canadians while remaining profitable, understanding that our costs continue to rise while mail volumes decline,” Smith wrote. “We intend to focus on serving our customers when they use the post office most,” he said, adding reviews in both post offices have determined that there are a very small number of local customers on Saturdays. Weekday hours at both post offices will remain the same: In Midway, Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1 to 4:30 p.m.; in Greenwood, Monday to Friday from 9

a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Postal box customers in each community will continue to have full access to their mailboxes at the current schedule. Smith said that there will be no change to the range of services available at either post office. “They are struggling and they are trying to save money,” said Greenwood Mayor Nipper Kettle when contacted for a comment. “It’s a tough situation but I can’t say I didn’t see it coming. I know a lot of people may find it a little bit hard, but they have done that in many, many communities and there is probably very few communities in B.C. that have Saturday service now.” Midway Mayor Randy Kappes said he was disappointed that Canada Post did not adhere to promised public consultation. “I don’t feel we’ve had any meaningful consideration of the concerns that council raised,” Kappes said. Pay it forward Time is short, but it is not yet too late to make a donation to the Kettle Valley Bursary and Scholarship Society’s 2014 campaign. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. The money that flows through this group each year goes to help deserving young Boundary Central Senior Secondary graduates as they begin their transition to post-secondary education. Increasing tuition fees make it very difficult for our promising young students to make that transition. They will have enough to focus on this September as they learn to adapt to new systems of learning and, inevitably, much larger class sizes. Scholarships and bursaries are an excellent way to help our local youth continue their education. The society has been helping Boundary graduates achieve their goals since 1965. President Leslie Walker says that virtually all of the money given to the society is passed on to deserving graduates. Only some $70 is needed for administrative overhead each year, and that is used for postage to connect with those who have donated in past years and to send out tax receipts. Once again: no donation is too small. All funds are pooled and therefore your donation of $20 or $100 will become part of something much larger. Multiple charges considered On Wednesday, May 14 Midway RCMP were called MIDWAY to report a suspicious male up Christian Valley road who was hitchhiking and had been picked up by a local resident. This hitchhiker told the driver that he was being chased by other people but did not want the police to be called. The police were eventually called and it was learned that this male was involved in an altercation with two other people. The argument led to two people being sprayed with bear spray and another vehicle being completely destroyed by the use of a crow bar. Corporal Kevin Christensen of the Midway RCMP reported that possible charges of assault with a weapon, mischief and drug charges are being investigated.

*** On Tuesday, May 20, police received a report that a Dodge pickup truck was stolen from Rock Creek. Police report the vehicle was later located in Keremeos and the investigation continues. *** On Wednesday, May 21, Midway RCMP received a complaint of a theft of seven Megabags used for recycling, sto-

Recycling bags that look like this were stolen from the West Boundary Regional Landfill in Greenwood on May 21.

Good fences make good neighbours. That seems to MIDWAY be the thinking of Greenwood council as they approved a development variance permit allowing Nicole and Darryl Drinkwater to construct a 2.75-metre (nine-foot) high fence between their house and their neighbour’s property. The approval was given on Monday nights’ regular Greenwood council meeting. Currently fences are limited to 1.8 metres (six feet) in height. Council was told the request was being made for privacy reasons in the area of the Drinkwater’s gazebo and barbeque. *** Council granted approval for the museum to access city hall for a work bee on June 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to clean and prep the upper floors for museum tours. ***

Council directed staff to contact Interior Health to arrange a meeting with staff and council to look at options if Dr. Ajaero leaves the area. According to Councillor Colleen Lang, an online petition protesting his move collected over 500 signatures, plus there were petitions at Overwaitea and the post office in Grand Forks. Lang said the Grand Forks woman who started the petition had spoken to Dr. Ajaero and he had made clear his intention to leave. *** Administrator Robin Dalziel reported the city had received a letter signed by four residents in support of the City of Greenwood continuing to work with the Dombroskys and their lawyers to clean up the property. *** Dalziel reported that the city is working with a trucking company that is will-
