igh school credits, a peek at a possible career and a brightening a senior citizen’s day are just some of the benefits of a candy striper program at Fir Park and Echo Village. ADSS Grade 11 student Lea MacDonald, 17, volunteers as a candy striper at Fir Park and Echo Village one Thursday afternoon a week. MacDonald’s grandmother told her about the opportunity and she looked into it at the ADSS career centre. “I needed volunteer hours for graduation so it helps,” she said. “I want the experience of doing this because it may be good for my future too because I can put it on my resume.” On this Thursday, MacDonald gently fed a female resident, patiently feeding one spoon of food at a time while coaxing the resident then praising her. On other days, MacDonald might read letters or a book to residents, stack tables and chairs after an activity or just be a companion and sit and listen. MacDonald came from Japan to live in Canada three years ago, about the same

time the candy striper program got off the ground. She had friends at school but found a special companion while candy striping. “She didn’t talk much and said things about her family at random. Sometimes she wanted to go home,” MacDonald said. “She died shortly after and that was sad.” Dealing with death is just one of the challenges that candy stripers face but they come in prepared, said Fir Park Program Director Leanne Fines. There are 15 candy stripers who volunteer at Fir Park and Echo Village, Fines said. There is

The three-years old program seemed like a good fit at the care facilities. Students
got volunteer hours towards grad and staff would get help with various tasks. But
there were challenges getting launching the program. There was an initial fear on the part of the union that they would lose jobs because of the initiative, she said. “But with one staff member for every five residents we negotiated tasks like help during feeding and other duties that had piled up during the day,” Fines said. After more than three-years of administrative work the program got off the ground. Candy striping has increased in popularity since its inception, going from five candy stripers the first year to 15 this
year. Fines works closely with the ADSS career centre is soliciting volunteers. Those interested have to go through a 10-hour orientation before working in a facility. “They learn about issues such as dementia, seniors behaviours and death. And we have them practice feeding by feeding each other,” Fines said. “We try to get the “Ews” out of the way right away.” In addition to credit for volunteer hours candy stripers also benefit in other ways. They learn things they didn’t know how to do, like speak other languages with residents or even learn how to knit. They become defacto family for residents who have none. And pick up wisdom from residents who pass along their life’s experiences. Candy striper Jen Banfield inquired about the opportunity after watching ABC News at ADSS. After an orientation she started at Echo Village. She performs tasks she’s asked to but has also shown initiative. An animal enthusiast, Banfield brought in chicks that were hatched at the facility, as well as run a petting farm, she said. Continued /A18

disappointed and my late dad was quietly supportive, saying if I needed anything that he’d be there.” VanAdrichem stayed in school for two more months until summer break. “No one knew but my best friend,” she said. Getting an abortion never entered her mind, she said. “I never thought about that or adoption, not for a minute. I was going to be a mother and that was that.” She gave birth to her son Dustin in January. She stayed at her parents home and tended to her new boy. VanAdrichem tried correspondence courses and VAST but chose to work instead. “My parents were fantastic grandparents but I didn’t want to depend on them for babysitting and for them to financially support us,” she said. In retrospect, VanAdrichem is struck by the lack of services that were available for teen moms. But VIHA worker Esther Pace coaxed her into attending a fledgling teen mother group. “I didn’t want to go at first but I did and I’m glad I did. My best friend then was Brenda Kraneveldt and she’s still my best friend today,” she said. “I went for four years. It helped to just have a place to share and unload.” VanAdrichem and other girls in the program were canvassed by VIHA about a the idea of a daycare specifically for teen moms in Alberni but the idea never advanced. “The public backlash was horrible,”she said. up VanAdrichem returned to school. She first obtained her human service worker diploma from North Island College in Alberni at age 36. Now, she’s got one more year of studies left before she achieves her BA in Child and Youth Care from VIU. “I never lost sight
of my goal which was to work with youth. Working with them now has brought me full circle in my life,” she said. After school, VanAdrichem wants to advocate for an independent dedicated youth centre, open five days a week, with programs for young parents. She also wants to advocate for better teen pregnancy outreach at West
Coast General Hospital. “Teen pregnancy is no different now than it has been for decades. The difference now is there are services and you don’t have to hide” she said.

Candy stripers are winners Are our public schools racist? It is said that when you do what you love then it doesn’t seem like work at all, and that about sums up candy stripers. This week we take our hats off to those wonderful volunteers who do all those little things to lessen the burden on facility staffs, and to bring a bit of sunshine to the often long days of elderly residents who spend those days inside. Candy stripers are teens who volunteer in Valley seniors care facilities as well as in West Coast General Hospital. A three-year old candy striper program at Fir Park and Echo Villages solicits students from Alberni District Secondary School in conjunction with their career education program. Historically, candy striping was done predominantly by girls, but this year the program has attracted two boys. From the dawn of time teenagers have gotten a bum rap, and are often pilloried for nothing more than being the age they are. Candy stripers quietly put such talk to rest. The program is a winner all around. Volunteers get credit for high school volunteer hours requirements, and they get a peek at a possible future career with seniors. Facilities get volunteers who can tend to tasks that staff don’t always have time to do or need help doing. Staff get to school volunteers on the business and potentially get employees who already know the business. But the biggest beneficiary of the program are the seniors themselves. They get companionship and the chance to impart wisdom that only comes with time and life’s experience. If this makes their final years more comfortable then the program has paid off with that alone. — Alberni Valley News

ICTORIA – Last week’s column on the proposal to add a mandatory high school course on the effects of Canada’s aboriginal residential school policy attracted a range of responses – some of which are printable. I referred to comments made by B.C. Teachers’ Federation vice-president Glen Hansman at a 2012 aboriginal education conference, where he insisted that “racism is the norm in public schools – still today” because of a colonial perspective that remains ingrained in our culture. Aboriginal education has been built into social studies curriculum for years. It’s come a long way from my high school days, where Mr. Spillers, my Grade 8 English teacher, assigned us an essay proposing solutions
to Canada’s “Indian problem.” That was 1972, and it was the only time the subject came up. My lone aboriginal classmate wasn’t around by then. I never saw him again after we graduated from our rural elementary school. How are things now? I received a thoughtful letter from a young woman who graduated from high school in the Okanagan last year. She writes: “The idea that information about residential – schools is not presented to students is entirely incorrect. The social studies curriculum that I went through included a large emphasis on First Nations culture and post-European colonization history. “First Nations studies began in elementary
school and continued to the last mandatory social studies course in Grade 11. I can say with no hesitation that if anything, I have been informed too often about the residential schools, and the horrendous things that occurred there. “If aboriginal culture courses are poorly attended, I would be inclined to suggest that it is because students are tired of being taught the same limited perspective over and over, and, if of European descent, being made to Ernie Crey feel somehow responsible for all possible troubles plaguing First Nations today.” Another reply I’d like to share is from Keith Thor Carlson, editor of the Stó:lo Nation historical atlas I referred to last week. Carlson is now a history

Education Minister Peter Fassbender was heard on last night’s news trying to vilify teachers, saying how there’d been a succession of governments Social Credit, N.D.P,
and Liberal - having trouble coming to agreements with B.C teachers and trying to divert blame from government by pinning it on teachers. No minister, it’s not teachers at fault but successive governments who appear to play from the same play-book. For example: in the 1990s an N.D.P gpvernment instituted an ‘Organization and Redesign’ (O.A.R) project to deal with staffing at the Cancer Clinic in Vancouver. It sounds a lot like the new ‘Care Delivery Model Redesign’ health-care staffing scheme the Liberals have hatched. And the buzz-word for the O.A.R project was “Work Smart” the same buzz-word used at one time by Liberal Education Minister MacDairmaid as she extolled teachers to “Work Smarter”. Incidentally, I haven’t exactly heard the N.D.P roaring out in support of teachers during this latest jobaction, which just seems to prove my point. So I say “a pox on all your political houses” and why, since 1970, I’m contemplating voting for the Green Party for the first time
in the next election - Provincially and Federally. As for teachers, thank-you for what you have always demonstrated whenever you’ve tried to bargain with government: unwavering, undying loyalty to your students. Liz Stonard, Port Alberni

Before condemning the teachers for taking job action, perhaps voters, especially parents, should ask themselves how much they are to blame for the current situation. How did you vote in each election including the Liberal sweep in 2001? Did you vote for the Liberals whose legislation gutted the teachers’ collective agreement and removed their ability to negotiate class size and composition? Did you vote to keep in power the Liberals who have wasted time and money fighting the Supreme Court decision that ruled their legislation “unconstitutional”? Did you vote for the party who has chronically

There is a tragic and expensive mistake in the making according to the political talk around the proposed resurrection of the E & N Railway. Who in their right mind believes that the train can be up and safely running for 18 million dollars? Why, our collective governments could eat that money up in studies before a spike is hammered or a tie replaced! With all the trestles, and crossings needed to be upgraded on this 125 year old line we could easily be into this train folly for hundreds of millions. And who will ride such a train with it’s 240 level crossings necessitating a snails
pace speed. The liability insurance alone could total an onerous bill. It is time to open our eyes to the potential this corridor could offer to the whole Island should it be converted to a hiking/ biking trail. Such a trail could be operational far before a rail service, be far cheaper,and provide a world class destination for hikers and bikers. Studies show that such trails attract clean tourism to areas serviced and those utilizing the trails stay in the area longer. Anyone doubting this should check out the Sacramento River trails in California, the Kettle Valley trail in the Okanogan and the Galloping Goose in Victoria. ! An E & N trail could eventually join up with the Powell River Ferry, providing a wonderful circle route for visitors from the mainland. While very affordable, the Micra isn’t “cheap” in execution. Even the knobs on the roll down windows have a soft touch to them. And there are metallic accents to break up the otherwise bland black interior. I certainly wasn’t disappointed when captaining the Micra. Even though that might sound like a backhanded compliment, it’s not. As far as small cars go, it’s functional, funky and has great value. Whether you’re looking for a vehicle that gets you from point A to B – minus all the options – or said vehicle with a few extras, the 2015 Micra might be the car for you. The restoration business has changed a great deal – in the past, most auto body repair shops would only take on such work when their collision work dried up. Now it’s very specialist work and I’m often asked if I could recommend a restoration shop. To be honest with you, I would be hard pressed to come up with enough names to fill the fingers of one hand. But I have no hesitation in saying that I doubt there is one in the entire country that restores and builds as many custom cars as 360 Fabrication, in Abbotsford. They control the costs and track the daily progress by using a number of management systems and a Gantt chart. The secret to controlling the work is to perform all of the tasks in-house with perhaps the exception of chrome plating. During my time in the trade, costs kept mounting up and either the customer or the technician, who worked on a flat rate (piecework) basis, was short changed resulting in ill feelings between the shop owner, his staff and the customer mainly caused by the lack of communication and too many assumptions! Laura Ballance’s original plan was to have a sympathetic restoration performed, replacing only what was necessary. But cars are no different from houses, boats and planes, so when the Mustang was disassembled and stripped they discovered that probably the only thing holding the car together was Laura’s father’s DIY welding! The Mustang is a relatively easy car to restore in terms of obtaining new parts. In this case, by the time the air chisel and plasma cutter was put away the only ma-

The man died while Banfield was doing her candy striping shift. “That was the hardest thing I ever went through. I was devastated,” she said. “But he’s in a better place now and I helped make his life a little bit better while he was here.” Fines hopes to grow out the program, she said. She wants to continue building

he Alberni Valley Bulldogs got the break they needed from the city and now the rest is up to them. Port Alberni city council voted in favour of a 50 per cent reduction in team operating fees for the next two years. The team originally asked for a 50 per cent reduction on their ice rental fee but the plan isn’t possible because of a community charter provision. “People have been waiting for a vote of confidence from the city,” Bulldogs business manager Lucas Banton said. “This should be a great move forward.” The team currently pays $4,300 per month

The deal would see Bulldogs receive a $25,000 grant from the ACRD’s, and in return work it off through providing equivalent value in services such as assisting with a recycling initiative, as well as providing assistance with trail building, Coun. Cindy Solda said. The deal is still being fleshed out and there’ll be more to report at the next meeting, she added. If the Bulldogs got a break then why can’t other multiplex user

BELOW: Presentation of proceeds from the Centennial Belles’ recent fashion show event, “Fashion from the 1920s to the 1960s” in April. The show played to a sold out audience and the Centennial Belles were able to hand over the substantial proceeds to the three families in town who are, and were, battling childhood cancer. The Belles chose to donate the proceeds to these families as Justin Knight, the son of the Director of the Belles, Tricia Knight also had the same type of cancer when he was five years old. The wonderful gifts given to Knight and their family at that time by the community of Kitimat was the main reason for doing the same for these children in this community. It was their way of “paying it forward.” Due to the huge success of the show, the Centennial Belles will be producing many more such events in the community covering the history and style of many Decades and even Centuries gone by.

Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.
Preparations start for seniors week made possible the opening of the Port Alberni home in 2002, and now under the leadership of its President Marlene Dietrich and an active board of directors. Our local house provides accommodation and social interaction and meaningful programs to 21 residents and is the largest Abbeyfield home in Canada. One of those residents is Eileen Unger, now one of the longest living residents of Abbeyfield. She has lived in this home for the past seven years. Originally from Prince
Albert, Sasketchewan (born on a small farm) , Eileen, has lived in the Valley for over 45 years raising her four children and currently enjoying several grandchildren. Eileen was wellknown in the community for her job as a sales person at “Gary’s Shoes” on Third Avenue. She also owned “Unger’s Corner Store” in South Port. From the moment she became resident of Abbeyfield, Eileen was well-known for her love for gardening; her interest in hockey (she used to have season’s tickets for the “Bulldogs”
games); and for her cooking skills; although she has not done the cooking for the residents, she has assisted in preparing meal items for special occasions as well as assisting with the serving at open houses, anniversaries, year-end celebrations. “This is my home and I enjoy everything going on here!”, she says. “We all try to keep busy and have a good time with daily talks and laughters with other residents and staff”, she adds. Abbeyfield will host the annual “Tea at Abbeyfield” as part of Seniors Week and
Abbeyfield Week, on Tuesday, June 3 at 1 p.m. (Tix for seniors are available at the Sunshine Club office). This Open House will be an opportunity for other community seniors to socialize with the residents and learn about living accommodation and the various social opportunities they have in their home. Also this month, the Echo Village community will celebrate 22 years of operation. It was June 15, 1992 when the doors of this multilevel care home opened its doors to welcome the first residents.

or years the seniors in our community have been recognized for their valuable contribution to their society. Port Alberni is the home to thousands of seniors who live independently or in seniors homes, such as the long term care facilities, independent and assisted living, private and government funded. Next week, they will be saluted by all of us at the 26th annual Seniors Week, (June 1-7) which aims to pay tribute for their valuable contribution to their community and their province. It is an occasion to celebrate the men and women who have laid the foundation of our society. Canada, is the third annual “Abbeyfield Week”. Abbeyfield Port Alberni is among over 800 Abbeyfield homes now in existence world wide with over 9,000 residents in 17 countries. The Abbeyfield movement began in 1956 when Major Richard CarrGomm resigned his commission with the British Army and bought a property at 50 Eugene Rd., South London for 250 pounds. It was to provide housing for four people- the only qualification being loneliness. The same concept was applied when in 1987 Canada opened its first Abbeyfield house in Sidney, BC. Today, there are thirty Abbeyfield houses in Canada, including the one in our community, thanks to Terry Whyte, who

The Community Arts Council of the Alberni Valley in collaboration with the City of Port Alberni is looking for artists to design original permanent murals to be installed at Echo Centre Pool. We are proposing a series of different sized murals that will cover the walls in the pool area at Echo Centre. These murals will be made out of Aluminum Composite Panels.
