Resident left with nothing after fire destroyed mobile home

A guest house on an acreage northeast of Sylvan Lake was completely destroyed by fire Sunday morning along with all the resident’s possessions.

Sylvan Lake firefighters received the call about 10:45 a.m. and arrived to find the structure engulfed in flames. It was at the back of an acreage on Township Road 391 just west of Range Road 10.

Muriel Sears, a cook at Lakewood Golf Course, was living in the home at the time, said property owner Cheryl Stanley.

While the main buildings on the property were insured, the mobile home wasn’t and Sears didn’t have contents insurance, she added.

“She lost everything,” Stanley said. Help has been pouring in though. The Red Cross and Sylvan Lake Victim Services were on the scene and assisted Sears that night.

“There’s been awesome support from our neighbours bringing over food and from my children,” said Stanley. Her children in Okotoks and Cochrane are bringing up items like clothing and dishes. Cash has started coming in to help Sears get on her feet again.

Her employer, Darcy Carruthers, has also been fantastic in helping.

For a volunteer department, Stanley credited Sylvan Lake firefighters with doing “an excellent job”.

She explained they’d had a fire in a fire pit the night before. A little breeze apparently blew some embers which got under the skirting and started smouldering then went up the side of the home to the roof, the fire investigator told her.

Stanley added they’re now trying to assess how to move forward. “We’re trying to get a game plan.”

They’re considering a small structure rather than another mobile home for Sears who also looks after their residence when they’re away.

Cleanup of the site was underway when Stanley talked to Sylvan Lake News Tuesday morning.

Sylvan Lake’s Servus Credit Union is also accepting donations.

Deputy Fire Chief Steve Scanland reported 23 firefighters battled the blaze for about four hours.

Red Deer County assisted with a tanker truck for hauling water to the scene. There were no injuries.

Stories of the past provide interesting insight; they need preservation The importance of preservation of our past is highlighted in a story and a special section in this week’s newspaper.

The first, a story about publication of the book Sylvan Lake, A Postcard Perspective, by medical doctors Brian Inglis and Robert Lampard, is testament to the interesting and vibrant life at Sylvan Lake in its early years. It’s because Dr. Inglis was interested in postcards and postmarks, particularly those featuring Sylvan Lake, that the collection was built over many, many years.

Glancing at some of the 201 postcards in the book and the painstakingly documented history of the community which accompanies them, the reader gets another view of how important the lake and tourism were and continues to be to our peace of paradise.

We urge people who have old pictures of community events and locations to consider donating them to the archives, or loaning them so they may be digitally scanned for future use and distribution.

Another of our failings in writing the arena history was that we didn’t have time to talk to more of the people involved and glean those informative stories. We hope there’s someone out there who has the time and interest to begin documenting, either in writing or on a recording device, the memories of our older residents so their oral storytelling is available for future generations.

Advice - Facilitator Stu Swanson talked to Grade 8 students

from École Fox Run School and Grade 10 and 11 ambassadors from École H. J. Cody High School during the Get Real finale last Friday afternoon. He provided the younger students with advice about making the transition to high school. Then they broke into groups for discussions. Part of the goal of the visit to Cody was to reconnect with some of the high school students and have faces they recognize, people they can go to when they move to Cody in the fall, said vice principal Darcy Marshall.

- During group discussions between École Fox Run Grade 8 students and ambassadors from École H. J. Cody High School, participants in the Get Real program were able to reconnect so the younger students will feel more comfortable moving to the high school in the fall. The half day Get Real finale last Friday gave Grade 8 students a chance to revisit some of the ideas and things they’d learned last fall. “We want it to be fun, want them to be excited about transitioning to high school,” said École Fox Run School’s Family Wellness Worker Janine Neyedley. Students also toured the school.

The matter of accommodation for the R.C.M. Policeman was brought up.

After discussing the matter from many angles it was decided to offer $40 per month as rent for Rusticana from Calgary Brewing Co. The matter of children riding bicycles was brought up. After a lengthy discussion it was decided to pass a bylaw forbidding any bicycle riding on sidewalks. ♦ ♦ ♦ J. K. Penley opens Varsity hall with dances tonight and tomorrow night (May 23-24), and a dance each Saturday night until the season opens. ♦ ♦ ♦ Some youngsters have already been in the lake for a swim … and found the water quite chilly.

New enterprises have been established at Sylvan Lake to open within the next week for business. These include roller skating, a beauty shop and an apartment motel.

The roller skating rink will be operated in the curling rink building by Cal-Bran Amusements Ltd., which is Fred Smith of Brandon and T. G. Hamilton of Calgary. They are presently operating a roller rink at Brandon, Manitoba and have leased

the curling rink from the town for three months to operate here during the summer.

A new beauty shop will be opened June 4 by Ib and Bente Klein, in the premises next to Del’s Barber Shop on Main Street.

Bruce Clifford is the operator of a new apartment motel on 1st Street East. He purchased the property formerly occupied by Clark’s Cabins a year ago, and has built a smartlystyled motel set-up, which is now ready for occupancy.

Businesses which have changed ownership include Sunell Hardware, Uptown Coffee Shop, Cosy Corner Cafe and Doris’ Burger Bar. These are all located on Main Street.

J. E. Sunell sold his hardware business to Watson Bros. of Red Deer.

Tour of Alberta cycling race to do two loops through Sylvan Lake Roads will remain open and then close as cyclists are approaching

A professional cycling race featuring 120 competitors will be travelling over the streets of Sylvan Lake in September.

It will be like the Stanley Cup finals being played on your street, at no charge. Some pretty elite cyclists are coming here,” said George Berry, chairman of the Central Alberta stage organizing committee. A sprint as part of the race “is going to be quite exciting with high speeds”, he predicted. The cyclists will do two loops through Sylvan Lake.

The six day Tour of Alberta will visit Central Alberta for stage 2 on Sept. 4. The day will begin at Innisfail then cyclists will wind their way through the countryside to Sylvan Lake before concluding in Red Deer.

Berry provided councillors with a preview of the event during their meeting Monday night.

“We wanted them to experience and see the charm of Central Alberta,” he said exclaiming his excitement for the race.

The route will take cyclists out of Innisfail and west on Highway 54 to Range Road 10 then north to Burnt Lake Trail and up 781 to Highway 11.

From there they’ll proceed west on Highway 11 to 60th Street, north to Lakeshore Drive then east to the traffic circle, south on Highway 20 to Memorial Trail, then west to 60th Street and back down Lakeshore for the second loop. Once they hit the traffic circle the second time they’ll go north on Highway 20 to Aspelund Road then east before making their way back for the day’s finish in Red Deer.

Berry said they’re planning a sprint finish in Sylvan Lake. “About a third of the way through the stage, speeds can go down a bit from 40-50 km/hr to 30 km/hr. We like to put something into the race, a big speed up,” he explained adding local businesses put up a cash prize.

“It’s high action coming in there with top speeds of 70 km/hr.”

The Tour of Alberta is a big event, added Berry.

Last year there were 160 million viewers in over 60 countries. He’s also had calls from people in several U.S. states who are planning to travel to the region to volunteer.

Two hours of live television coverage are planned every single day of the race. That coverage will include commercials highlighting Central Alberta and Sylvan Lake. “It’s very exciting, we’re lucky to have it in Central Alberta.”

The intent is to have Central Alberta included as one of the stages each year of the event. “We’re hoping in the future to have a start or finish right here in Sylvan Lake.”

Discussions are underway with Chinooks Edge School Division and Red Deer Catholic Schools to allow students to watch the race as it passes through town, said Berry.

“We wanted them to experience and see the charm of Central Alberta,” George Berry said exclaiming his excitement for the race The loop through Sylvan Lake will be approximately 12 kilometres and it will take the whole entourage — all the cyclists and their support vehicles — about 30-45 minutes to travel through town.

Berry said roads will remain open and then close as cyclists are approaching.

Asked by Councillor Chris Lust about expectations from the community, Berry said they’ll need about 30 volunteers in Sylvan Lake and would like

town assistance with setting up and taking down barricades for road closures and making temporary road closures.

Councillors requested staff prepare a report for a future meeting so they can discuss supporting or approving the event.

Sylvan’s Walk for Dog Guides a major success in its first year

Sunday marked the first time Sylvan Lake Lions hosted the Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides. And given its success — raising more than $3,200 to help provide dog guides to those in need — it likely won’t be the last.

“For the first year, not knowing what to expect, we had a very good participation rate,” said Sylvan Lake and District Lions Club member and event organizer Suzanne Leshchyshyn.

Twenty walkers and their dogs traversed one of two routes beginning at the dog park near the corner of 60 St. and Memorial Trail.

Some funds were raised through online donations prior to the event, while others were collected on the day, known among Lions nationally as National Walk Day. All proceeds go toward Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG), which provides guide dogs at no cost for people with hearing, visual, physical and medical disabilities.

LFCDG also covers the cost of training the dogs — approximately $25,000 each — as well as travel expenses for qualified applicants, who are required to travel to Ontario to undergo a one-to-four-week bonding period with the dog.

Cody’s Art & Soul benefit back for another year

H. J. Cody Fine Arts Department is hosting its sixth annual Art & Soul benefit, Sunday, June 8 beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The afternoon will include a benefit concert, art show, and silent auction to support the development of young artists in our community.

We aim to give the students opportunities to grow personally through exploration of, and participation in, the arts. Our hope is to enhance our programs by updating facilities, travel, programming and giving opportunities to kids they may not otherwise be able to afford them.

Last year, with help of the generous Sylvan Lake community, we raised just over $4,000. This helped us purchase art equipment and display boards, give away $1,500 in scholarships for the fine arts and send several students to summer arts camps. We are now gearing up for a possible trip back to New York

City in 2015.

This year’s concert will feature musicians Donny Smith and Carmen Winter. Donny Smith began as a jazz drummer/percussionist. After 10 years of leading a rock band on various cruise ships, he settled in Central Alberta where he’s been entertaining for over three years with his unique style of combining acoustic guitar, vocals and drums in a solo show.

Carmen Winter has been playing guitar for 10 years, training privately with local music legend Ian Stewart.

Her intricate fingerstyle playing lends itself well to her folk and singer/songwriter style music. With encouragement from Donny, she started performing her music live in early 2012.

Together they have created a unique fusion of folk, classic rock and blues to showcase their combined talents in playing guitar, percussion, singing and harmonizing.

Unable to stay away again this year is master guitarist and vocalist Shawn Kingston. Shawn has been a crowd

pleaser at Art & Soul with his guitar prowess and sense of humour.

Also sitting in is Airdrie singer/songrwriter Rick Simon. Rick’s genuine awe of music and passion for writing keeps him a very busy musician. Both Shawn and Rick have youngsters of their own and truly value the spirit of the Art & Soul day to promote arts for kids!

The art show highlights the best works from H. J. Cody art students. Pieces from Grade 9-12 artists in

several different mediums will be included — some are even for sale in the auction! Bruce Thompson, art teacher at H. J. Cody, has been collecting work since the beginning of the year to showcase at Art & Soul.

On April 26th 4-H members, together with their steers and heifers, spend a day full of cattle showing and judging at Benalto Ag Centre. All of the members

were able to get an idea of what the show ring will be like at our show and sale which will be held at the Westerner June 1st and 2nd. It provided a chance for new and younger members to get help and advice on grooming and showing cattle. Each of the members did very well showing their steers. Good Job everyone and special thanks to Mr. Rolly Bateman from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, who graciously provided advice and judging expertise to our members — it was a great learning experience!

On May 3rd Red Deer West 4-H Club members participated in the annual highway cleanup. Our club was responsible for cleaning ditches along Hwy. 11A from Sylvan Lake traffic circle to Hwy. 2 at Red Deer.

Everyone had a blast even though we did find some unusual stuff. After the club was done cleaning they all got to hang out at one of the members’ homes nearby — and load up on food.

It was followed with a quick monthly meeting at the end and everyone went home dead tired. Thank you to all the drivers who took caution that day making it safe for everyone. We would also like to thank Tim Hortons, Sylvan Lake for supplying coffee, hot chocolate and doughnuts once again!

Our members are now busy getting their animals ready for our year-end show. We would like to invite you all to come out to our show and sale June 1st and 2nd and see what beef 4-H is all about. Our female and club steer show will be held on the 1st and our interclub steer show and sale will follow on June 2nd.

RCMP NOTES

Dispute over lawn mowing led to assault charge; several impair charges laid Saturday, May 17th 1:20 a.m. – RCMP were called to a noise complaint at a residence on 44th Street near 47th Avenue in Sylvan Lake. The complaint stated approximately 20 people were having a loud party. A warning was given to the owner and no further problems were reported.

Sunday, May 18th 2:00 a.m. – A complaint was received by RCMP regarding an intoxicated female in a vehicle on Hinshaw Drive in Sylvan Lake.

The 23-year-old female was sitting in the vehicle and told police that she wanted to sleep in the back of the car. Due to the female’s intoxicated state, she was transported to a hotel for her safety as well as public safety.

2:40 a.m. – A 46-year-old Sylvan Lake male is charged with impaired driving after he was stopped

by RCMP. The male was traveling on 50A Avenue at 51A Street in Sylvan Lake and his driving pattern was

Red Deer County tax rate bylaw approved

Red Deer County’s tax rate and minimum tax bylaw received second and third reading May 6, with the county set to collect about $42 million through taxation this year.

Rates for 2014 are 7.8673 for farmland (previously 7.5647), 2.6550 for residential (previously 2.6352) and 9.8480 for non-residential (previously 9.7312).

“The budget laid out earlier this year contains some very important infrastructure work that is key for Red Deer County’s future,” said Mayor Jim Wood in a media release. “This tax bylaw will allow us to collect the funds needed to complete this work in a timely and efficient manner.”

Levies were set at 0.5 for protective services (previously 0.4), 0.4 for community services and 0.159 environmental services. The latter two remain unchanged from last year.

A new seniors housing levy sits at a rate of 0.0209.

Highlights of the county’s budget include a regravel program, Gasoline Alley storm water improvements and bridge repair projects.

CAO Curtis Herzberg feels the bylaw bodes well for the future.

“This tax rate bylaw contains some major infrastructure projects that will serve the county well into the future,” he said in a media release following the bylaw’s first reading April 22. “Red Deer County offers a very high service standard and continues to be in a sound fiscal position.”

The tax payment deadline is June 30.

Friday, May 23rd 2:27 p.m. – RCMP attended Chief ’s Pub and Eatery on Lakeshore Drive after two intoxicated males were reportedly stumbling around on a sidewalk near the establishment. The males were located by police lying on the ground in front of Subway restaurant. Both were arrested for public intoxication. One male was found to be on outstanding warrants and was transported to Red Deer Remand.

Thursday, May 22nd 3:28 a.m. – RCMP conducted a traffic stop for speeding on 50th Street at Perry Drive in Sylvan Lake when the driver was found to be exhibiting signs of impairment. The 27-year-old female driver from Sylvan Lake was charged with impaired driving after failing a roadside screening device and was released to appear in court. Her vehicle was towed from the scene.

Monday, May 19th 2:00 a.m. – A police officer on patrol on 47th Avenue at Ryders Ridge Boulevard in Sylvan Lake stopped a vehicle as part of an impaired driving investigation. The 43-year-old female driver, a resident of Calgary, refused to provide a breath sample and was charged with refusing to provide a breath sample and impaired driving.

Wednesday, May 21st 1:33 a.m. – RCMP were called to a domestic dispute in progress on 49th Street in Sylvan Lake. A 38-year-old male and a 49-year-old female were both intoxicated and arguing. The male was arrested at the scene. He is charged with two counts of assault, mischief under $5,000 and careless use of a firearm. Two unsafely stored firearms were seized from the home.

3:15 p.m. – Another complaint of vandalism to playground equipment was reported at the community centre in Sylvan Lake. Wood on the ship was damaged and broken. Cables to the glider were cut and parts pulled apart. A patrol was made but the vandal or vandals had left the area.

Benalto student to showcase skills on national stage

BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS A Benalto student attending school in Red Deer is planning to make his mark at the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto next week.

Arden Nielsen, a Grade 12 Notre Dame High School student competing in the electrical installations event, earned a spot at the competition after a solid showing at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition in Edmonton earlier this month.

He’s one of 65 students who will represent Team Alberta at the national competition June 4 to 7.

Nielsen began taking the classes in Grade 10, and said he was excited about the prospect of competing nationally.

As a member of Team Alberta, he’ll receive $500 from the WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Legacy Scholarship, and a further $500 if he wins gold in Toronto.

Shawna Bourke, Skills Canada Alberta director of communications, said, “schools in record numbers are recognizing the importance of developing and supporting students’ individual talents in the trades and technologies.”

More than 700 students competed in 45 different events at the provincial event in Edmonton.

Music festival promoters failed to attend; council willing to look to next year

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Plans for a summer music festival in Sylvan Lake appear to be dead for this season after promoters failed to attend a council meeting Monday night.

After being denied use of the pier by the Friends of Sylvan Lake Provincial Park committee, Dana Carlson and Quan Diep, of True Channel Entertainment, attended the May 12 council meeting with a new proposal to use Centennial Park but they were too late to speak during the open mic session and weren’t on the agenda.

Ron Lebsack, the town’s director of community services, said his staff had spoken to the promoters last week and told them they needed to submit a special events application for use of the park.

At Monday night’s council meeting, the Summer X Beach Music Festival was added to the agenda under ‘delegation’ by Mayor Sean McIntyre, but no one attended to address the topic.

In light of that, Lebsack recommended town staff work with the group to see about an event next year. “The timelines are getting extremely tight,” he said.

Several councillors were also concerned that there wasn’t enough time left to organize the Aug. 23 event.

Lebsack said with council’s approval, he’d express staff ’s willingness to work with the organizers for an event next year.

“I hope they understand we’re willing to work with them,” said Councillor Jas Payne. “I think there’s an appetite here to have an event like this. The support around this table was clear to them.”

At their April 28 meeting, councillors had conditionally supported the event setting out a number of things that had to be accomplished by specific dates. But since the original plan was for the pier, the ‘Friends’ committee and the provincial government had to approve the event.

That didn’t happen.

Information provided to council during the April meeting stated the event would be a “family friendly arts and music festival” that would “encourage tourism, enrich the local economy, enrich local arts and culture”.

They were planning for a maximum of 5,000 attendees between noon and 11 p.m. by providing a “strategic selection of musical artists to appeal to a broad audience”.

The main genres would be adult contemporary and alternative rock — easy listening.

The event was to include a public beer garden with a capacity of 400 and a VIP beer garden with a capacity of 300.

The 2014 Sylvan Celebration of Music committee is pleased to extend congratulations to the musicians who participated in this year’s festival. Also, a thank you to the volunteers, adjudicators, sponsors and music teachers who gave tirelessly to making this year’s Celebration a success.

15 years ago; the Celebration of Music began, with the vision to provide an opportunity for music students to play and share their music regardless of age, level or style. Festival students, teachers and parents alike, glean new ideas, receive extra motivation from knowledgeable, experienced adjudicators, and are inspired to grow in their musical understanding and ability.

The Celebration of Music continues to attract musicians from Sylvan Lake, Red Deer and surrounding communities with 300 musicians participating in this year’s week long event.

The committee organizing The Celebration of Music event, is comprised of a group of dedicated individuals, Megan Callan, Lenore Dyke, Anna Olive, Shallon Green and Laura Lee Lewis. They have been instrumental in attaining performance opportunities with Jazz at the Lake “Project Discovery” for participating musicians and scholarships to assist recipients to further their music studies.

As the interest from musicians continues to grow, so has the support from the business community. 2014 saw The Best Western, Pier 7, Bay View Cafe, Fireside Restaurant, Tim Hortons, Alliance Church, Dale Campbell, CD Industrial Group Inc., Sylvan Lake News come forward to support the endeavors of the festival organizers and participants.

Many awards are received by the musicians thanks to the generosity of Studio Upstairs, Rouillard Law Office and Rapid Auto Solutions.

In 2013 three music education scholarships were added to that list. 2014 scholarships were made possible with the sponsorship of NewAlta, Servus Credit Union, Sylvan Truck Ranch and a grant received from the Town of Sylvan Lake Recreation, Arts and Culture. The recipients of the scholarships are recommended by an adjudicator, based on the musician’s outstanding performance during the adjudication week while displaying technical proficiency; versatility between instruments and showmanship.

The 2014 scholarships were awarded to Lauren Rowe for her Musical Theatre performance of Defying Gravity; to Ryley Fraser for piano, guitar, voice, musical theatre and rock band; and to Nick Ekelund for his ability and excellence in his drum performance of 3 contrasting styles Reggae, Big Band Swing and Funk.

This year the highly esteemed Charles Austin Award went to Connor McKee for his performance of Chopin’s Nocturne in Eb. The Jazz at the Lake Youth Concert award is an invitation to its recipients to perform their Jazz selections during the world class Jazz Fest held in Sylvan Lake in August. The students have the opportunity to work with a professional accompanist and to attend a master class workshop. Selected for the best Jazz performances were Jennifer Fletcher, Sara Koch, Raegan Frenette, Connor McKee, Ainsley McCallum, Makenna Good-Nicks, Emma Baker, Owen Dyke, Nick Ekelund, Laura Arnusch, Brooklyn Hughes, and Julie Olive.

The week concluded with a red carpet awards ceremony at the Red Deer Memorial Centre with Jennifer Johnson as Master of Ceremonies. The audience enjoyed stellar performances that were selected by the adjudicators during the festival.

Great drama was experienced when 100 young golfers participated in the bear delayed Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) Bow Valley Credit Union Classic at the iconic Banff Springs Golf Course on the weekend.

Among the field was Jaxon Lynn, 16, of Sylvan Lake who won the Juvenile Boys 15-16 division OUR DOOR TO YOURS – after firing rounds of 73-75 (148). Forty golfers were competing in the division during the two day MOBILE GLASS SERVICE event.

Organizers laud ‘best ever’ Sprint Triathlon

Solid numbers, cooperative weather and plenty of community support contributed to another successful Best Body Fitness (BBF) Sprint Triathlon in Sylvan Lake Sunday.

So much so, in fact, that race director and BBF owner Scott McDermott is calling it the best ever.

“It’s the best race we’ve ever had,” he said.

“It was absolutely fantastic.”

With 164 adult athletes competing, the triathlon experienced its biggest participation rate since Sylvan Lake Triathlon Club took over organizing of the event several years ago.

More than a dozen took part in the duathlon, consisting of a 5km run followed by a 26km bike and another 5km run.

The event, now in its ninth year, has grown steadily over the past few years, according to McDermott. And he’s excited about the direction it’s heading in the future.

“Next year is our 10th anniversary of the race, so we’re super stoked about that,” he said. “In a world where most triathlons are giving less and less, we’re pushing to give more and more.”

Most of that growth, he added, is made possible by local sponsors and supporters — of which the triathlon was certainly not short this year.

“The local businesses in town have just been absolutely fantastic,” he said. “We had tons of amazing local sponsors that just make all the difference.”

McDermott said the race also had plenty of support from its many volunteers, and from the Town of Sylvan Lake.

A race of another kind also contributed to the day’s success.

The Kids Splash ’n’ Dash, open to youngsters between the ages of four and 12, raised its registration capacity to 100 participants this year, and was nearly filled.

Continued from Page 16 “For the first couple of years, they capped it at 20 or 30 kids, and then a few years ago we raised the cap to 40,” said McDermott. “Last year, we had the cap at 60, and this year we opened it up to 100, and we had 96 kids in the event.

“It was ridiculously awesome.”

That race consisted of a 25m swim, 500m bike and 200m run.

. . . ‘best ever’ Sprint Triathlon “It’s just letting the kids have a lot of fun and feel like they’re a triathlete just like mom or dad,” said McDermott, adding not all of the participating children’s parents are triathletes.

“It’s just a fun thing for the kids to do, but it gets them started in the sports.”

Triathlon winners were Brian Hrynkow of Sherwood Park, in the male division, with a time of 1:12:38; Sharon Styles of Carstairs, in the female division, with a time of 1:16:21; and Pullar Express of Edmonton, in the team division, with a time of 1:45:35.

Duathlon winners were Hans Haugen of Camrose, in the male division, with a time of 1:36:32, and Sarah Yaremcio of Edmonton, in the female division, with a time of 1:42:45.

Sadly, on May 18th, 2014 Betty Hollingshead passed away peacefully at home at the age of 89 years.

Betty was born and raised in Calgary and graduated from the University of Alberta in Home Economics. After graduation, she worked in Montreal for Eatons and the Red Cross. She married Robert (Bob) Hollingshead in 1947 and they shared 41 wonderful years of marriage together. During her lifetime she raised her five children with constant love and support. She will be forever remembered for her love of family, her wonderful sense of humor and her enduring wisdom and guidance.

Betty had many interests and was passionate about reading, gardening and sports. She loved dogs and enjoyed her favourite vacation spots which were Maui in the Winter and Sylvan Lake in the Summer.

Betty will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her five children Susan Robson (David), Bob Hollingshead (Bitty), Bill Hollingshead, Diane Hollingshead (Robert Wilson), Jane Foster (Cameron) as well as 8 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren.

Also mourning her loss is her sister-in-law, Philippa Pullar of Calgary. Betty was pre-deceased by her parents, her two brothers (Bill Pullar and Bob Pullar) of Calgary, her great grandson Adam Burkholder and her husband Bob. A Memorial Service to celebrate Betty’s life was held on Friday May 23, 2014 at 1:00 pm at Hainstocks’s Funeral Home, 9810-34 Ave NW, Edmonton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta 10985-124 Street, Edmonton, AB, T5M 0H9 or to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Sylvan Lake, A Postcard Perspective has just been published by medical doctors Brian Inglis and Robert Lampard.

Containing 201 postcards, along with information on scenes they depict, the book is the result of years of deltiology (postcard collecting) by the pair. The book is divided into 15 chapters. He displayed his is postcards in his ted d office and solicited wlyy comments, slowly geest st building the largest van an collection of Sylvan Lake postcards. aggo Three years ago he envisioned a rd ds book of those cards j for f 20 2013 13 and d as a Centennial project enlisted Lampard to assist in putting it together. “It was an opportunity to present the history of Sylvan Lake from the perspective of the many visitors who came to the lake to holiday, to enjoy its beauty, participate in water activities — and then send postcards to their friends and family,� states biographical notes in the book.

Lampard said his interest in postcards started with a chat about 20 years ago when Inglis discussed his interest in postcards and postmarks, particularly of Sylvan Lake. “I started collecting and giving them to him as Christmas presents,� said Lampard. Then he starting collecting postcards on his own. “They’re absolutely fabulous pieces of information.�

His postcard collection now matches his book collection — he’s

written eight other books, primarily on medical history of Alberta and has used postcards as illustrations in those books.

While Inglis has been here since the 1970s, Lampard has been coming to a family cabin at Sylvan Lake since the early 1940s when visitors far exceeded the town population in the summer.

In gathering information for their book, the two were able to find three other people who had postcard collections that highlighted Sylvan Lake.

Fred Freschette had a unique collection of tin reflection type postcards from the turn of the last century. Then Jack McCuaig of Edmonton, shared a couple of postcards with them. He has an eye for unusual postcards and is a very knowledgeable collector, said Lampard. “His interest is in who took the pictures and how many were made. The two he provided were by Byron Harmon, a famous Banff photographer.

The book’s forward notes they’ve uncovered over 220 different pre1975 postcards, including three new and unique Sylvan Lake Picture Postcards found on e-Bay in the months preceding publication.

The book, Lampard said, “is quite a different history. It reflects the visitors. It’s very summer focused, very water focused, reflects a very vibrant community in the

summer time.� One of the cards noted Sylvan Lake was the third most popular summer resort in the province, something that’s borne out by the number and variety of cards created.

They were only able to find one postcard of a winter scene which shows ice pushed up on the shore.

The inscription states “Savan Lake� which they’ve interpreted to be Sylvan Lake, although there are no distinguishing features in the picture.

One of the more active locations in the community during the summer was Varsity Hall, but they were unable to find a postcard of that building.

They’ve deposited digital copies of all the postcards with the archives for future study.
