Heritage Snapshot

Clayburn School Address: 4315 Wright Road, Clayburn, B.C. Construction Date: 1907-1908 Architect: Provincial Department of Land and Works Builder: Robert Harvey Brock Heritage Status: Municipally Designated, Heritage Designation Bylaw no.1700 Community Heritage Register Listing: Yes Clayburn is British Columbia’s first company town, built around the Clayburn Company that thrived from the early 1900s until the brick plant’s closing in 1930. The town features a number of remaining historic brick buildings, which are symbolic of the town’s rich brick making history. The Clayburn School is one of the early buildings that reflect the rich history of Clayburn Village. The original wood-frame school was built between 1907 and 1908, and was expanded to twice its capacity a number of years later as a response to the growing Clayburn population. The Clayburn School maintains much of its original integrity; the most significant alteration having been the expansion of the original small school building prior to 1925. The School is listed on the City of Abbotsford’s Community Heritage Register and is a Municipally Designated Heritage Site.

Clayburn Church Address: 4280 Wright Road, Clayburn, B.C. Construction Date: 1912 Original Owner: Presbyterian Church Builder: Clayburn Brick Company Heritage Status: Municipally Designated, Heritage Designation Bylaw no.1535 Community Heritage Register Listing: Yes The Clayburn Church is one of the early buildings that reflect the rich history of Clayburn Village. The church is a brick building that was built in 1912, and served the town of Clayburn until 1958, when the church closed its doors to the public and moved to another location. In 1978, due to the efforts of the M.S.A. Heritage Society, the church was restored to its original condition, and currently provides rental space to the community. The Clayburn Church maintains much of its original fabric; however, the church underwent a significant alteration during the dismantling, salvage and reconstruction of the building. The church is listed on the City of Abbotsford’s Community Heritage Register and is a Municipally Designated Heritage Site (Luxton, 2013).

Following the closing of the plant in 1930, many original residents left the town to pursue their lives elsewhere. However, the current community, which does comprise a number of longtime inhabitants, takes pride in their town’s history (Luxton, 2013).

Let’s Get Moving!

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology suggests, for healthy growth and development in infants (less than 1yr), they should be physically active several times daily. For toddlers (1yr - 2yrs) and preschoolers (3yrs - 4yrs), they should accumulate at least 3 hours of physical activity at any intensity spread throughout the day, everyday! Playing games in lessons can provide the opportunity to learn new skills, and improve social skills. Our preschool programs promote children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth and encourage them to express themselves through creativity and imagination in individual and group settings. All of our preschool programs will afford your child at least a half hour of exercise per class. Our professionally trained program leaders incorporate lots of toys and games into every session so they experience fun in a range of environments and intensities, from the gym to the pool.

When I am looking to keep my child busy throughout the summer I look for new and interesting opportunities that are sure to keep them busy. Whether they are busy, meeting new friends, discovering a new game or going on an out trip I know that they are always excited to come back each day. The City of Abbotsford summer camps are a fantastic way to spend the summer days!

I like camp because it’s the only place everybody gets to meet new people and become friends, laugh, play all day, rain or shine, go on extreme outdoor trips. Every week is a new adventure! Summer camp is the best invention ever!

Let’s Get Moving!

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology suggests, to achieve health benefits, adults aged 18yrs - 64yrs should accumulate at least 1 hour of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity 3 days per week. It is also beneficial to add muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups, at least 2 days per week. Moderate intensity physical activities will cause adults to sweat a little and to breathe harder. PRC supports the Physical Activity Guidelines by offering activities like: brisk walking on our indoor track, aqua classes and strength classes, such as Strength, Abs and Stretch. Vigorous intensity physical activities will produce sweat and increased breathlessness. PRC offers vigorous activity classes like: Cycle Fit, Tabata Circuit and Fit Circuit. y, Engaged, Generous, Fun “

To me, volunteering means giving up your own time to help out with something greater than yourself. Abbotsford is an amazing city that provides an infinite amount of opportunities to the people who live here. It means the world to me to know that I am giving back. It’s also a great way to meet new people and learn new skills.

Abbotsford Senior Secondary School - Synthetic Turf Field In partnership with Abbotsford School District No.34, Abbotsford Senior Secondary School is home to the newest synthetic turf field. Synthetic turf fields provide great training venues for athletes involved with school and community sports. This field has been marked for soccer, American football, unified field lacrosse and field hockey. Bakerview Centre for Learning - Cricket Pitch In partnership with Abbotsford School District No.34, Bakerview Centre for Learning is home to the newest cricket field. An artificial cricket pitch has been constructed to provide a venue for divisional play for local cricketeers. Cricket continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in the Fraser Valley.

Abbotsford Exhibition Park - Natural Turf Wicket

During periods of potential inclement weather, generally November to March, when normal play may cause damage to fields, or compromise the safety of users, fields are inspected and reported upon as to the present conditions. These inspections occur daily during the business week regarding field status. Parks staff report on conditions daily prior to 12pm for daily status. Prior to 12pm on Fridays, the weekend field status will be reported on. This status is for the entire weekend until further inspections and reports to the website and the hotline are updated, on the first business day of the next week. Field status over the weekend cannot be changed but are monitored by weekend staff, to ensure safety. Fields are closed to prevent situations that may lead to player injury and degradation of the field surfaces. Conditions that warrant field closures are: • Standing water • Frozen or snow covered field surface • Excessive wear • Excessive frost • Weather forecasts stating inclement weather

In 2011, the artificial cricket pitch at Abbotsford Exhibition Park was converted to a natural cricket wicket. The wicket has four pitches that were constructed with specialized soil that was brought in from the Edmonton area. The soil requires a clay content that is significantly higher than local soils have. Specialized equipment has been purchased and maintenance procedures have been established to provide the local cricket community an exciting venue for play. This conversion allows for Abbotsford to host both national and international cricket events. • Rotary Stadium (Grandstand capacity 4000, announcer’s booth, timing tower, score clock, 400 meter rubberized track, grass field /playing field, washrooms, change rooms, concessions) • World class BMX track

General Park Information

The City of Abbotsford operates and maintains 70 playgrounds in our parks. In 2003, a Playground Replacement Program was put in place and, with the ongoing support from the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas, the City has been able to replace 12 playgrounds since that time. In 2013, the City was awarded a Federal Government Matching Infrastructure Grant to replace 10 of its aging playgrounds. This funding has enabled the City to replace the last of its non-CSA compliant playgrounds. Playground structures in Larch, Southern, Glenridge, Charlotte, Everett, Juniper, Renton, Fairfield, Uplands and Jubilee Park were replaced, as well as upgrades to surrounding infrastructure were completed in March 2014. New playground designs address inclusive play and serve children of all abilities. Replacing the old pea gravel surfacing with “wood carpet” not only provides better fall protection, but also makes our playgrounds wheelchair accessible. New protective fencing and asphalt pathways have been added at several of the playgrounds where needed to further enhance and provide better accessibility.

Park Programs Parks Gift Program

The Parks Gift Program was developed to allow citizens, community groups and businesses to donate gifts to the City of Abbotsford for the enhancement of public parks and recreation facilities. Applications are accepted year round. To ensure survival, planting trees and shrubs may be delayed until an appropriate time of the year. Benches, picnic tables and similar gifts are ordered immediately upon receipt of payment and are installed upon receipt from the manufacturer. Donors can work with our Parks staff to ensure that the gift is appropriate for the location requested. All donations in excess of $1,000 will receive a bronze plaque inscribed with a message. Messages can be a maximum of 70 characters and plaques will be installed on, or next to your gift. Donations greater than $15,000 can be recognized with a plaque unveiling at a special event.

Cost Sharing of Private Fencing

As a “Good Neighbour”, the City of Abbotsford will consider cost sharing the installation of fences constructed on residential properties shared with city parks and / or pedestrian walkways.

Trees

The City of Abbotsford has a bylaw in place to preserve the tree canopy in Abbotsford. The City also has measures in place to ensure that all trees are healthy and viable and contribute positively to the natural environment. Trees are important in our community to help us sustain a healthy, natural environment. Before cutting down any trees on your property, it is important to contact the Urban Forestry

Section to ensure that you comply with the bylaw (please see bylaw at www.abbotsord.ca). There is a fee for the tree-cutting permit. The current fee is indicated on the tree cutting application form. Permits are valid one year from the date of issue. For information on tree permits or if you have any comments or concerns regarding a tree on a City boulevard or park contact Parks, Recreation & Culture.

Tips for your Trees

Fertilizing: • Fertilize your tree ONLY if a soil test shows that nutrients are lacking. If so, an application of a balanced fertilizer may be applied before the tree begins to bud. • Applying “weed and feed’ to your lawn may injure or kill your tree. Most combination weed killers and lawn fertilizers will injure trees. Do not use anything that states it will kill broad-leaved weeds within the drip line of a broad-leaved tree as it may harm the tree as well. Mulching: • Maintain a ring of mulch around the base of the tree (the wider the better). Organic materials like wood chips and leaves are best. Wood chips will take longer to break down and, therefore, will not require replacement as often. • Mulch layer should not exceed more than 10 cm. deep over the roots as this may inhibit oxygen from reaching the roots. • Mulch should not be placed against the bark of the tree or placed in a “mulch volcano”. Watering: • An important factor in tree survival is providing water at the correct frequency. The first three years are most critical, but pay attention to watering needs throughout the tree’s life. • The best way to know how often to water is to check the soil moisture approximately 15 cm. below the soil surface. Water when dry. • For the first three years after planting, provide about 10 liters of water per 3 cm. of trunk diameter. Water the root ball and just beyond radiating out from the trunk. • As the trees age, supplemental watering is encouraged in times of low rainfall to assist in the development of healthy trees. Water larger trees within 2 m. of the trunk out to the drip line.

Geese and Ducks

Please do not feed the geese and ducks. While it is enjoyable to feed waterfowl, it is detrimental to them and to our environment. Feeding waterfowl creates numerous problems such as: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to extremely large concentrations of birds - overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population. • Destroys the birds’ ability to forage and find food for themselves. • Deprives the birds of essential nutrients and can cause serious digestive problems. • Attracts rats and other vermin due to the large amount of food scraps in the area. • Reduces usable areas for people due to large amounts of feces and potentially aggressive geese. • Causes costly efforts to keep our parklands usable and clean and to manage the ever-increasing numbers of waterfowl. The presence of wildlife can greatly enhance your park experience but, when waterfowl concentrations become too high, it can diminish your experience as well as causing significant increases in maintenance costs. Please help us to manage these large waterfowl populations by allowing the birds to feed themselves. Remember, real geese don’t eat bread.

Abbotsford Cemeteries

The City of Abbotsford owns and operates four cemeteries: Aberdeen, Hazelwood, Mt. Lehman and Musselwhite. Aberdeen Cemetery is located on the Fraser Highway close to Aldergrove and currently has limited opportunities for cremation interment.

and maintained in park-like settings with views to the nearby mountains and the Fraser Valley. These historic places are cultural resources and community assets and provide an ongoing legacy for generations of Fraser Valley residents. Pre-arrangements can be made by contacting Parks, Recreation & Culture.

Hazelwood Cemetery is located along Hazelwood Avenue just east of the Abbotsford-Mission Highway and has a wide variety of interment services available. In addition to in-ground cremation and traditional casket burials, Hazelwood now has a columbarium consisting of 1,056 wall niches and 200 in-ground niches. A columbarium is an above-ground, multi-level structure composed of a number of niches to house cremated remains. Inground niches (or vaults) are constructed of concrete with internal liners. As well, an ossuary and scatter garden has been added at Hazelwood. An ossuary is an in-ground receptacle in which cremated remains are co-mingled, and a scatter garden is a specially landscaped area where cremated remains can be dispersed. A small plaque can be placed on granite memorial pillows located at the ossuary and scatter garden. Mt. Lehman Cemetery is located on Taylor Road in the historic farming area of Mt. Lehman. There are currently only cremation interment options at Mt. Lehman. Musselwhite Cemetery is located at the intersection of Marshall Road and Old Yale Road and currently has only inground cremation interment options available. The four cemeteries are the final resting place for many of the Fraser Valley’s early settlers and continue to reflect the ongoing growth and diversity of the community. Hydro Towers

A dog off-leash area is a place where pet owners can take their dogs to run free without a leash. Off leash does not mean “out of control” and only applies to the specific, designated area. Pet owners must ensure that their dogs are controlled and not violent or aggressive. Pet owners must also be on-site for the duration of the visit and abide by the off-leash area etiquette.

SWIMMING

Let’s Get Moving!

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology suggests that we should all be active and exercising at a range of intensities to ensure that children’s bodies develop properly and they learn new movement skills and that adult bodies can maintain a healthy body weight and build healthy hearts. Vigorous-intensity activities such as aquafit classes or masters swimming can help you improve your fitness, while private swimming lessons can provide you with moderate-intensity exercise while learning new movement skills. The City of Abbotsford offers Red Cross Preschool and Swim Kids swimming programs. Through these programs we combine water safety knowledge with technical swimming skills to help people of all ages get the amount of exercise they need. From swimming lessons to aquafit classes, our pools give you the opportunity to experience exercise at a range of intensities without the impact on your joints. The pool is an amazing environment for you to learn new skills, be fit and be active.

(15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Swim Kids Level 4 This level introduces the front crawl (10m)

Swim Kids Level 9 This level refines the front crawl (100m), back

and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Swim Kids Level 5 This level introduces the back crawl (15m),

sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

Swim Kids Level 6 This level refines front crawl with a focus

on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

Swim Kids Level 10 This level is a final assessment of

the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

SKATING

Let’s get Skating!

Ice skating is a wonderful activity to be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. A great family activity that will create many memories, skating also provides excellent aerobic activity. Regular skating activities will improve balance, coordination, muscle endurance, strength, cardio and respiratory endurance. Our Learn-to-Skate instructors will teach you the proper skills in a safe environment to enable a lifetime of skating enjoyment. The Learn-to-Skate program includes Preschool and School Age lessons that allow the individual to progress at a controlled pace through the different skating skill levels. For those that prefer to learn in an individual setting or want additional instruction, we also offer private lessons that are specifically targeted to your needs. Whether you want to move on to hockey, figure skating, speed skating or leisure skating, our lesson programs will get you ready. Come on out for a skate!

60 SKATING

www.abbotsford.ca/prc

Challenge, S Stick and Puck Want to play some hockey this summer? Grab your gear from the storage tree, bring a friend and come practice your hockey skills. These sessions are unstructured, so that you can work on your moves, shoot on a goalie or pass the puck around with friends. Practice your stickhandling, shooting, passing, and more.

e, Speed, Enjoyment, Memories “

The facility attendants that supervise the Stick and Puck are great at keeping it fun and efficient. They allow us to play a game at the end of the ice, which we organize, and they just ensure it is kept at a fun level where everyone gets to play. Or we can just hang out and work on our skills on the other ¾ of the rink, shooting on net or playing pass with our grand-children. I love spending the time with my little guy out on the ice.

- Anonymous

I enjoy working the stick and puck program because I get to watch people of all ages come out and enjoy the game of hockey. Even if it is their very first time out or they play at a high level of hockey, the smile on their face just to be on the ice is very rewarding to see.
