“Symphony’s whole philosophy is that we have different neighborhoods for different needs of care and independence,” said Joe Sullivan, Executive Director, describing the establishment’s physical lay-out and design. “We really want to be non-facility. We want people to feel like they are living in their home, not ‘a home’.

We want to stay away from the institutional terminology and the way we interact with our residents,” he said.

Symphony Senior Living includes Neighborhoods for seniors in the independent living category. “Then we have independent residents who do need a little assistance, we can offer them the care they need while maintaining their independence.”

‘Oasis’ is the name of the assisted living Neighborhood.

And at Symphony Senior Living Aspen Ridge, there is the Moments Neighbourhood for people who need memory care – those living with dementias or Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s an incredibly innovative area that Sullivan really wants to draw attention to, as the area is complete with enhancements to bring comfort and stability to those who live there.

“One of the key messages I want to get out is about our Moments Neighbourhood,” said Sullivan. “We are one of the only places in Red Deer

right now that is offering a private memory care program.” Currently, we do have suites available.

“You could move in tomorrow.”

As Sullivan points out, long-term care facilities offers memory care services, too, but these services are usually delivered in a facility-driven way.

“Here, our resident to care staff ratios are higher. We have a lot more programs in terms of activities and our overall approach to memory care is much more refined.”

At Symphony Senior Living, it’s not about reminding those living with dementia of what the actual date and time is when they ask a question about an incident or person from their past.

“Our philosophy is to live in the moment with them. If it’s 1952, that’s where we are with them.

We have lifestyle stations in the memory care neighborhood.

“One of the stations is a bureau with all sorts of scarves, gowns and hats from the 40s, 50s and 60s – all kinds of things depending on where they are, all to help trigger memories from the past.”

There are also various TV programs and films from various eras that folks can enjoy as well. “They can watch the Andy Griffith show, or shows from the 1940s or 50s.

“It’s about taking with our residents and living with them in that moment.”

Sullivan also pointed out that physical activity is emphasized. “We always have snacks and food, and hydration readily available for them as well. The key is a healthy diet.”

Reg Bernier, Director of Wellness, agrees.

“People living with Alzheimer’s and dementia are constantly on the move, so they burn so much more energy. You need to replenish that energy with snacks between their meals as a supplement to keep up with their energy levels. We don’t want them losing weight. It’s always been a challenge with those who are

living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”

Sullivan points out that staff receive special training to work in the Moments area.

“It takes a special person to work in those neighbourhoods. It’s more like a home environment.” Staff wear regular looking clothes as opposed to hospital-type uniforms. Medications aren’t given in public areas. There are no medication carts out and about. Another key benefit is a continuation of care, right from independent living through to living in the Moments neighbourhood. “We can go from purely independent all the way to palliative – we can care for you for as long as you would like to stay with us. We can handle just about any care challenges that arrise.”

Ultimately, it’s about bolstering that sense of home; or normal and everyday routines. “It’s all about the dignity of the residents. That’s what we really want for them. And we want to make sure there’s lot for them to do.” There are six to eight activities to enjoy each day as well.

There’s even Sylvester the cat who lives here, who the residents take joy in as well.

Our Moments Neighborhood has been specifically designed to accommodate people who a living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. “People get highly agitated when they come to a dead-ends or doors, where this Neighbourhood is circular,” said Bernier. “It’s a wonderful aspect that way.”

Sullivan said another plus is wonderful staff that know the residents so well. “That’s the awesome thing – they become family. Even though they are suffering from a disease, we want them to feel like they’re at home, that this is where they belong, and that they are with family members.”

Looking forward Sharpe said she hopes to get involved in the community.

“I would really like to build relationships with the schools in town and start a mentorship and scholarship program,” she said.

“When I started in hair school after high school there was a scholarship program and I applied for it. I got a Marvel scholarship and a scholarship from a family in Drumheller, which is where I am

from. The family said to me one day to pay it forward and I finally feel like I am at the point where I can do that and I am excited about that.”

The salon will be involved in a fundraising event for a young Red Deer girl. The event will be hosted in conjunction with Hugs for Keera at the Westpark Community Center from 1-4 on Friday, June 6th with a hamburger BBQ for $5. People are encouraged to participate with either shaving their head or by donation.

Sharper Image Hair Design is located in the Highland Green Plaza (4-88 Howarth St.) The salon is wheelchair accessible as well.

Ken and Brenda Johnson take a special pride in their home-based business, which was launched about three years ago.

“I was looking for something more efficient for myself,” explains Ken, reflecting on the beginnings of the business.

LED lights not only save energy, the bulbs are easy to install, durable, bright, eco-friendly and they boast an exceptionally long life, lasting up to 50,000 hours, notes the Techno Solve Inc. web site.

IT company offers customized support to businesses

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express A longstanding IT company has recently opened its newest location in Red Deer.

F12 Networks is an Albertabased company and has been operating in Edmonton and Calgary since 1996. An office was opened in Red Deer at #8, 4699 61 St., last year which is managed by Wade Bayntun, and officials with the company are excited to be doing business in the City.

“F12 provides an all-inclusive network offering to clients. What I mean by that is that we don’t just wait for the phone to ring and then come and fix the problem. Clients get all of the office products plus all of the support combined. They get everything they need to operate their network,” said Leanne Yeatman, operations manager of F12 Networks. “Our direction is to not profit when clients are broken. Our

approach is to keep things working and operating.”

F12 Networks is the only one of its kind to offer unique options to their clients such as an all-inclusive plan called Service Plus which includes computer equipment, software and support all for one monthly fee.

They also offer a unique oneclick support tool called F12 Connect. By pressing the F12 key on their keyboard clients can interact with their customized support teams based on business industry.

These support teams are known as NOC Pods (Network Operations Centre), and are focused on particular industries which allow them to have a deeper knowledge on industry specific applications and technical requirements.

“We put a large emphasis internally on the F12 culture. As staff we have a unique identity called ‘Networkers’. We have made heavy investments into our office spaces.

Networkers enjoy highly comfortable, open-concept work areas which are techy, funky and decorated to match our brand,” said Yeatman.

Bayntun added F12 Networks offers free, no obligation consultations to businesses to help determine their needs.

“We want to make sure the entire process is easy,” he said. “We create a budget for them when it comes to their IT needs.”

Also important for F12 Networks is their involvement in the community.

“There are a number of organizations we have partnered with closely over the years. We do a lot of work with medical clients throughout Alberta and one of the organizations we were recently involved in is I See Change. They are a group of medical students at the University of Alberta and they work on delivering medical practices in third world countries.

“Last year we got to send a team out to one of their current projects,” said Yeatman.

“Another organization that is near and dear to us is the Ronald McDonald House and we support them across Alberta. We do regular dinners for them and other things for them as well. We’ve also done events for cancer fundraising and we sponsor people in different relays and races and things and we also support the Canadian Diabetes Association in various events.”

Ultimately, Bayntun said the goal for F12 Networks is to ensure businesses have their IT needs taken care of.

Range of Primary Care Network programs continues to expand

The Red Deer-based Primary Care Network continues to expand in terms of programming and educational opportunities, and the goal is to reach more Central Albertans than ever before.

Around the City, residents may notice the message of ‘Real People, Real Successes’ regarding the PCN. Those messages of personal success related to the programs offered are key to bolstering public awareness, said Dr. Peter Bouch, past chair of the organization.

“It’s a new campaign to make people more aware of the Primary Care Network – we have a lot of great programs and essentially, the campaign is directing people to the web site where there are real people telling their stories, and pictures of people that have had success in various programs.”

A PCN is a network of doctors and other health providers such as nurses, dietitians and pharmacists working together to provide primary health care to patients. Each network has the flexibility to

develop programs and provide services in a way that works to meet specific needs of patients. And as Bouch points out, the campaign featuring testimonials is critical in helping spark interest in those looking to better their health in a particular way. “A lot of people will probably find that the physician will tell them to go to a program, but if they hear a firsthand story from another patient, they’re more likely to finish a program or at least sign up for it.”

Bouch describes the web site as very interactive, with thorough descriptions of the programs. “Once they go there, they can read about the things they would like to do.

They can then get a hold of their family physician and they can then get referred.”

Staff of the PCN are also focusing on the popular Health Cafes – engaging information gatherings which include presentations by physicians or other experts on a given topic, followed by a question and answer session.

Past Health Cafes have focused on how to be a better patient, tips on exercise, information about vaccinations and antibiotics and another was about dealing with the effects of menopause. The public is encouraged to check the

web site for updates about the latest Health Cafes as well.

Bouch oversaw the ‘how to be a better patient’ session, where he discussed how people can make the most out of a doctor’s appointment. “It’s a way for people to receive good knowledge that is scientifically-based and evidence-based,” he said. “I think they are also another way of engaging the public – of finding out what they want in the Primary Care Network. Sometimes we get ideas on possible programs to think about as well.”

As to the programs offered, they range from dealing with chronic disease and mental health issues to managing anxiety and becoming happier. One of the most popular ones is Health Basics, which focuses on diet/exercise and adopting a healthier lifestyle.

Another feature residents are seeing around Red Deer are outdoor gyms – a project the PCN worked with the City on to bring to fruition. “It goes hand in hand with our mandate of trying to keep people active, and getting them outdoors. The Primary Care Network is really a catalyst for active living in the community.”

“When I put my stamp on it, it has to be 100 per cent to my approval before it goes out to the public, or before it gets on anyone’s finger especially because we specialize in engagement rings and wedding

“It’s so important to a woman, so we spend days and days and days trying to make the best that we can - a very special ring for that very special occasion.”

Shimoon’s expert eye and service system is sure to please. His delicate process takes approximately six to eight weeks depending on the complexity of design. Each minute counts as he and his team create a product from start to finish that is exclusive and tailored to perfection.

“We’re not only just designers. We do repairs, we do diamond settings and we sell diamonds. Our specialty is high quality diamonds – that’s the field we picked up on, and that is where we will stay.

“We are also manufacturers.

We do have retail, quite a bit of stock but mostly we work on design - new concepts, new designs and new ideas. Usually people bring us pictures of what they’ve seen, either online or in different magazines. Then we take that concept, alter it and then we design an exclusive piece. There is only one made for that person. That’s our strength.”
