DID YOU KNOW? Sumas Prairie used to be the bottom of a very large, shallow, freshwater lake surrounded by extensive wetlands that were a part of the Fraser River watershed. The lakes and rivers of the Sumas watershed supported an abundance of fish (sturgeon, trout, salmon) and birds (Hutchins geese, whistling swans, white-fronted geese) and served as main transportation routes for the First Nations population for a millennium.

The lake was drained in the early 1920s.

Learn, create, run

The Envision Financial Run for Water is an opportunity for participants of various ages and skill levels to get outside and exercise, while raising funds for people in the developing world who are lacking the basic necessity of clean drinking water.

Students at local schools are also given the opportunity to contribute to the cause with the Envision a Better World: Learn, Create, Run program.

Last year, more than $350,000 was raised to help build water projects in the most deprived areas of southern Ethiopia, with a quarter of those funds raised through student efforts.

Education director for the Run for Water Society, Betty Baerg, explains the program. “Partner teachers commit to using some of our learning resources around themes of social justice and water issues, and we provide assemblies to elementary schools and a youth leadership event to middle and high schools.”

Many schools use the opportunity to fundraise and host school-based events during the months of April and May, such as MEI’s Empathy Walk.

“Students carry jerry cans to a nearby

water body, fill them and then trek back to get in touch with the difficult reality of what girls around the world do every day,” said Baerg.

The program focuses on several important lessons, including teaching students to appreciate living in a country with an abundance of water, as it is essential for human life. “We demonstrate the global disparity between those with access to

water and those without - about one in seven people in the world don’t have access to clean water,” said Baerg.

“We also help with the belief that their actions can make a difference in the lives of others.”

With nearly 50 schools participating in the program, the initiative to provide water to impoverished regions has truly become a community incentive for all ages.

“People appreciate participating in a well-executed running event, while knowing they are involved in something bigger than themselves” said Baerg.

“The event could not have grown as it has without an enormous amount of fantastic volunteer support, an incredibly generous group of financial sponsors and a community that cares!”

But nobody cares, because everybody looks like a dork in that hat. More importantly, everyone wearing that hat — 600 of you, lined up in alphabetical order — is graduating today.

It should be boring — 600 students crossing the stage one by one — but it’s not. You see people you’ve taken classes with, people you’ve passed in the hall, people you’ve sat next to at

Relay For Life heads to Abbotsford Relay For Life is an inspirational, non-competitive, 12-hour fundraising event that brings you and your community together to celebrate life and fight cancer. Relay has a festival-like atmosphere that your family, friends and co-workers can enjoy regardless of age or fitness level. This year we’re excited to promote our new hours for the Abbotsford-Mission Relay – 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. – on June 14 at Rotary Park. We’d like to invite the communities of Abbotsford and Mission to join us.

Teams of 8 to 15 people fundraise individually and as a team to help the Canadian Cancer Society save lives and support those who are facing cancer.

Relay participants make a commitment to raise at least $100 and are supported with the tools to reach their goals.

At Relay, teams gather with cancer survivors at Rotary Park track and take turns walking laps. Each team is encouraged to keep at least one member on the track at all times, while all around them the event is in full swing. As darkness falls we circle the

track with luminaries, which are candles in white bags, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Throughout the 12 hours, participants are united by music, food, activities and entertainment and the intention to celebrate life.

A festival-like atmosphere that your family, friends and co-workers can enjoy regardless of age or fitness level.

Every dollar you raise at Relay For Life helps the Canadian Cancer Society to have more impact against more cancers in more communities than any other cancer charity in Canada.

WE’VE DONE A LOT OVER THE YEARS The first Relay For Life in Canada was held in 1999 and raised $85,000. Since then, Relay has raised more than $496.5 million nationally. Relay For Life continues to be the Canadian Cancer Society’s largest fundraising program.

Exploring Abbotsford’s Discovery Trail CALVIN BERGEN

Abbotsford is a great place to get out and enjoy the fresh air, and it has some of the best trails for people of all ages to enjoy. One of Abbotsford’s newest outdoor attractions, Discovery Trail provides an alternative transportation option, and allows families to enjoy nature and exercise in and around their community. Discovery Trail caters to a wide array of skill levels, ages, and different recreational activities such as running, rollerblading, walking, and cycling.

My dad, Harv Bergen, owns Life Cycles Bike Shop - a local store that’s been selling bikes and related merchandise for a over 20 years now.

Recently, we rode Discovery Trail in

its entirety. This hadn’t even been our first attempt; a few months prior, we called it quits a little after our departure once the hail started to fall and the bitter cold set in, but we were determined to give it another try. We started off in the west end of Abbotsford at Gardner Park, and wound our way through Fishtrap Creek Park, Clearbrook Park, as well as many other smaller parks along the way. I rode my Rocky Mountain Trailhead 29 - from Life Cycles - along the paved pathways, the rougher off-road segments, the hills, and the boardwalks that make up the diversity of Discovery Trail. If you haven’t discovered Discovery Trail for yourself yet, I would encourage you to take advantage of it - whether it be in short chunks, or travelling the whole 30+ kilometer route.

ON THE NOSE: Black raspberries, cherry Lifesavers, chocolate, tomato leaves and pepper.

toasted almonds, finely chopped in blender

1/4 cup

soya sauce

To toast almonds, place them in a heavy skillet and stir often over medium heat until golden brown. Watch carefully as they go from golden brown to burnt very quickly!

ON THE PALATE: Black cherries and raspberries, coffee, spice, with a hint of soy sauce and quick finish.

fresh lemon juice

garlic, finely chopped

cayenne pepper (add more, if desired)

Combine all marinade ingredients. Cut each breast into 3 lengthwise strips, marinate at least 2 hours or overnight.

OVERALL: Juicy, fruity, easy-drinking and easy-pairing. Serve with food or on its own.

Try it slightly chilled.

Thread strips onto skewers, 2 or 3 strips per skewer, and grill about 7 minutes per side, until no longer pink.

If you’re lazy like me, ask our friendly butchers to de-bone some skinless chicken thighs for you, marinate them whole and barbecue them on an Island Grillstone. Watch them sizzle and cook in the juices of the marinade right on the stone!
