S

he lives in constant fear of when the next proverbial lightning bolt will strike her son.

When it does – and it will about three times a day – the brain of Sheri Chamber’s three-year-old boy Jakob will be thrown into a complete short circuit, electrical charges jumping between neural pathways, causing his eyes to roll and

head to drop.

This is the more common type of event for Jakob, called a juvenile seizure.

The seizures are result of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), which causes nonmalignant tumours to grow throughout his entire body.

They invade his kidneys, heart, eyes and skin, and at this stage of his life, they are showing up in his brain. (There are about five tumours present

now, but they continue to grow in size and number).

And while the frequent juvenile seizures are bad enough, they have a much more serious counterpart.

That is the status seizure, a life-threatening event that throws Jakob into a prolonged series of convulsions.

These seizures are troubling, violent and potentially deadly.

“I’ll miss it,” he told The Leader in a one-on-one interview Thursday. “It’s the right time.”

His primary goal upon being elected in 2005 was to help the board focus on educational matters rather than political issues.

“Obviously, I was concerned about education, as an educator,” the former Reni Masi teacher and principal says, noting trustees of varying political stripes have come together to function in a non-partisan manner better than some of their predecessors. “My focus was education, not politics.”

Surrey firm fined for discrimination Tribunal finds racial harrassment of refugees in B.C. camps

by Jeff Nagel A B.C. HUMAN Rights Tribunal has ordered a Surrey-

based tree planting company to pay more than $600,000 in compensation to 55 African workers it discriminated against at camps in the GoldenRevelstoke area in 2010.

Khaira Enterprises ran camps in the B.C. Interior and abused and discriminated against African refugees working there, according to a ruling released Friday.

The company owners have been ordered to pay each affected worker $10,000 plus another $1,000 for each additional month they worked after the first one.

African workers who testified before the tribunal likened their treatment to slavery, and while tribunal member Norman Trerise did not go that far, he found they were racially harassed and underpaid compared to Caucasian and South Asian workers.

“I find that the actions of Khaira and its principals in favouring the South Asian and Caucasian workers over the African workers was discriminatory on the basis of race, colour and place of origin,” his ruling found.

Trerise found they suffered embarrassment, a degree of depression, frustration and loss of selfesteem as a result of the discrimination.

Some workers were also subject to sexual harassment.

As for dismal camp conditions, the ruling said all workers were exposed to them.

Khaira’s owners are also restricted from future work in the silviculture industry.

The province terminated its contract with Khaira

after its workers were discovered in squalor, some of them saying they hadn’t eaten in two days, and a series of investigations ensued.

Khaira was previously ordered by B.C.’s forest safety ombudsman to repay more than $236,800 in unpaid wages but workers got less than half of that and only because the province withheld the money and redirected it to them.

Khalid Bajwa, the owner of Khaira Enterprises, has been charged with fraud and forgery. Court documents allege that Bajwa forged two fire suppression certificate documents and that he defrauded two representatives of B.C. forestry companies. Bajwa pleaded not guilty and the case is awaiting trial.

Sarah Khan, one of two lawyers with the BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre who argued the case in front of the human rights tribunal, said they were very happy with the ruling.

She said the tribunal also recognized the existence of anti-black racism in Canada.

“He accepted that it’s very difficult for black people in Canada, that things can be quite difficult in terms of equal access in Canadian society,” she said. “That’s really important to recognize because most of the complainants came through the refugee system to Canada from Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Guinea.

Khan hopes the ruling will help spur various actions that will eradicate racism in Canada.

“We continue to hear about incidents like this, while not as extreme as what happened at Khaira,” Khan said. “We all have a responsibility to work to get rid of it.”

Judge doesn’t buy Andrew Ostrowski’s claim that someone else was driving

drunken crash in which his best friend was killed was convicted in B.C. Provincial Court on Thursday (May 22).

Andrew Henry Ostrowski, 27, was found guilty of impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failure to stop at an accident causing death in connection to a 2011 T-bone collision that killed Sergio Martinez.

The court heard that the two, who had been friends for about seven years, had been doing repair work on a Honda CRX on Sept. 6, 2011 at a house near 136 Street and 96 Avenue where Ostrowski lived.

They later got into the car and were driving south on 132 Street when they entered the intersection at 88 Avenue on a red light. It was then the CRX was struck on the passenger side by a Nissan Armada which was heading eastbound on 88th.

Martinez was taken by air ambulance to hospital, where he later died.

Ostrowski got out of the car and fled down 132 Street.

establishing community schools and expanding the International Baccalaureate program.

“That (the latter) was important because it’s an excellent program,” he said. “We’ve sent a lot of kids to major universities through that program – top, first-

class universities.”

He also helped the board fight for – and eventually receive – equitable funding which, due to a flawed government formula, repeatedly left Surrey getting significantly less money than similarly sized districts such as Vancouver.

One of the things he wished he had achieved was making PE mandatory for Grade 11 students.

“It’s good for kids. It gives them new outlooks and new career possibilities and establishes lifestyles.”

15 years and a principal for 20 – all in Surrey.

While he ran unsuccessfully provincially in Surrey in 1966 and twice federally (1980 and 1984), it wasn’t until he retired from being a principal in 1991 that he began thinking more seriously about entering political life.

“It was always a strong interest,” he said. “I like the theory of politics. We live in the best country in the world. Why not get involved?”

After a two-year stint coaching basketball at Holy Cross High School, Masi served as president of the B.C. Liberal Party from 1994 to 1995. A year later, threw his hat in the ring to represent the Delta-North riding, unseating Norm Lortie and serving the constituency until 2005.

Masi, 80, has been married for nearly 45 years and has three adult sons and two grandchildren.

His future plans are uncertain, he says, but he’s not too worried about keeping busy.

“Something will come along.

“Worst case scenario, I become a campaign manager somewhere,” he laughed.

Teen stabbed at high school

by Sheila Reynolds A 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL was stabbed in the arm during a fight with

another girl outside Delview Secondary Wednesday (May 21) afternoon.

Delta Police say they were called at about 2:20 p.m. to a report that two teens were fighting on the school grounds of the North Delta high school.

A suspect was arrested and was taken into police custody, while the victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say they are satisfied there is no further risk to students at the school, located at 9111 116 St. Parents of the students involved were also notified. The investigation continues.

Ostrowski: Sentencing Sept. 5 From page 3 Police arrested Ostrowski on a side street about six blocks from the crash site. The arresting officer said Ostrowski smelled of liquor, was swaying and slurring.

When asked about an arm injury, he told the officer he “tried to help some guy at an accident down the road.”

Ostrowski, who took the stand during the trial two months ago, claimed that he, like Martinez, was a passenger in the two-seat car, and that a third man was driving at the time of the collision.

He testified Martinez was in the passenger seat and he was forced to straddle the centre console area, while the other man, who he claimed spoke Spanish and was a friend of Martinez, was driving.

He said the third man also left down 132 Street after the crash.

Ostrowski claimed the reason he fled was because there were outstanding warrants for his arrest and he knew police would show up to the scene.

During the trial, the court heard from four witnesses who testified seeing Ostrowski get out of the driver’s side of the Honda CRX after the accident and that only one person got out of the car.

Another witness who was cut off by the CRX while driving shortly before the crash testified he thought he saw three people in the car.

On Thursday morning, Judge Peder Gulbransen said the testimony from the four witnesses made it clear there was no third person in the CRX and that no one other than Ostrowski got out of the vehicle.

He called much of Ostrowski’s testimony “improbable and unbelievable,” adding his account of how he ended up in the CRX with Martinez and the third man was also “fraught with inconsistencies.”

Gulbransen questioned his story that the third man “suddenly appeared” at Ostrowski’s house, ready to move

the car to Martinez’s house and that the first Ostrowski heard about the plan was that evening. And if he was good friends with Martinez, Gulbransen asked, why wouldn’t Ostrowski know who the third man was?

The judge said it was clear Ostrowski was intoxicated by the erratic manner in which he was driving and his decision to enter the busy intersection on a red light.

Gulbransen said Ostrowski’s decision to flee the scene and lie to police showed “consciousness of guilt.”

“He knew that he was intoxicated and that he had caused a serious accident,” the judge said.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 5.

It’s time to get serious at the table

he game of chicken between the province and its teachers will likely culminate this week in a walkout that will keep students and teachers in Delta out of the classroom on Wednesday, and Surrey students and educators out on Thursday – unless a last-minute agreement can be reached.

While many lament the toll this will take on students and families, and the hurt it does to faith and trust in the education system generally, the truth is this is the only way to resolve a bargaining impasse, especially when both sides are so entrenched.

The stakes are so high that only the withdrawal of service can get the province’s attention; at the same time, Victoria has equal stakes in the outcome and can only offer financial incentives or threats to get its point across.

Would it be nice if there was a better way to resolve differences? Absolutely. Usually at this stage, a mediator is appointed and the talks continue behind closed doors.

Let the teachers and the government make their stand, then please, get back to bargaining in earnest. Let’s not see another month of uncertainty and discontent.

ast week’s column on the proposal to add a mandatory high school course on the effects of Canada’s aboriginal residential school policy attracted a range of responses – some of which can be published.

I referred to comments made by B.C. Teachers’ Federation vice-president Glen Hansman at a 2012 aboriginal education conference, where he insisted that “racism is the norm in public schools – still today” because of a colonial perspective that remains ingrained in our culture.

Aboriginal education has been built into social studies curriculum for years. It’s come a long way from my high school days, where Mr. Spillers, my Grade 8 English teacher, assigned us an essay proposing solutions to Canada’s “Indian problem.”

That was 1972, and it was the only time the subject came up. My lone aboriginal classmate wasn’t around by then. I never saw him again after we graduated from our rural elementary school.

when aboriginal people showed great agency (retaining the masked dance, and continuing to fish salmon, for example).

“Knowing that native society was not a Utopia when Europeans arrived does not take away from the importance of learning about the full history of aboriginal people and their relationship with Canadian society.

“And of course, as Ernie Crey has reminded me many times, let’s never forget that native rights are not based on race. Rather, they are rights based on prior occupation. And let’s also not forget that it is British and Canadian law that recognizes aboriginal peoples’ inherent rights.

“Let’s teach good history to our youth so they can understand the complex relationship between settler society and aboriginal society.

Through knowledge comes understanding and through understanding can come reconciliation.”

Sad lesson on bullying

Take trucks off city streets

I DON’T think trucks should be allowed on

88 Avenue, which runs through residential areas, schools, daycares, parks, etc.

The new South Fraser Perimeter Road (Surrey Bypass/Highway 17) is underused, and this new four-lane expressway takes trucks to the same destination (Alex Fraser Bridge).

One of the proposed benefits of the SFPR, when it was built, was to eliminate traffic through the city.

Regarding the Pattullo Bridge, we all know it is old, narrow, congested and in need of repairs.

Trucks have a new alternative – the Port Mann Bridge (also under-used) – but they don’t take it just to avoid paying tolls.

Using the Pattullo also increases traffic through the city of New Westminster.

Langley, Surrey, Delta and New Westminster should work together and impose a max 10,000 GVW limit for trucks driving through cities and residential areas. It would mean significantly less congestion, noise and pollution, and more safety.

ON JUNE 1, 2012, Premier Christy Clark

announced a province-wide 10-point antibullying strategy to help ensure every child feels safe, accepted and respected. Clark said: “That’s why when I became Premier, I promised to address bullying in our school system as a high priority for my government.”

Flash forward to May 16, 2014, when government bargaining spokesperson Peter Cameron said teachers’ pay would be docked.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said Cameron’s comment wasn’t a threat. The Oxford Dictionary defines threat: “A statement of an intention to inflict pain, injury, damage, or other hostile action on someone in retribution for something done or not done.”

So if you believe Fassbender, you’ll also believe the government is removing the toll from the new Port Mann Bridge.

On May 21, the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association told the BCTF that effective May 26, teachers will be docked five per cent of their pay for participating in job action. If teachers then launch rotating strikes, teachers’ salaries will be docked 10 per cent.

So while Clark promised to address bullying in our school system, it is unfortunate that she and her subordinates see nothing wrong with bullying and threatening the children’s teachers.

Minister pledges public input on Massey bridge tolls Todd Stone won’t say what happens if motorists say no to fees

The province hasn’t decided the scope or cost of the Highway 99 corridor project but Stone was asked by The Leader how he intends to get public approval for tolls if they’re to finance the promised new bridge.

“If we end up going down the road of tolls on the George Massey Bridge, we would want to make sure that was well informed by the public in terms of some public input,” Stone responded Wednesday.

He said the public engagement model used for the Port Mann/ Highway 1 project is “one potential template.”

Stone was referring to a series of public open houses and an online survey held in 2006, after which the province announced it had 56 per cent support of 2,300 consultation participants for its plan to toll the new

Asked if the province would impose tolls anyway or abandon the idea if the public opposes paying to cross a new Massey Bridge, Stone was non-committal.

“It’s absolutely premature,” he said. “We don’t know if the desired funding model would be a tolled option.”

One method of public approval Stone rules out is including Massey Bridge tolls to the referendum TransLink mayors are expected to seek on a package of TransLink projects and new taxes.

“No, there’s no plan to link the two,” he said.

Tolls have been contentious in much of the region and especially Surrey and Langley since the new Port Mann Bridge was tolled, leaving the aging Pattullo Bridge, the Alex Fraser and the Massey Tunnel as the only free routes.

That’s led to increased talk among Metro politicians and others of applying tolls consistently across the region or shifting to some form of road pricing – scenarios that are currently blocked by the provincial tolling policy.

Stone confirmed the province will soon launch a review of the policy, which allows tolls only on new infrastructure and only when there’s a reasonable untolled alternate route.

“It’s a matter of fairness and equity for folks who live south of the Fraser,” he said, noting possible tolls on replaced Massey and Pattullo crossings would leave the Alex Fraser as Metro Vancouver’s only free bridge over the Fraser River and invalidate much of the provincial tolling policy.

He said finishing touches are being put on the planned review as part of a new 10-year

provincial transportation plan.

Metro mayors still have to decide on a replacement of the Pattullo and whether it will be tolled, Stone added.

As for the Massey Bridge/Highway 99 project, Stone said the province must decide how much highway improvement is needed on each side of the Deas Island crossing.

He noted the replacement of the Port Mann Bridge was only $800 to $900 million of the much larger $3.3-billion project, which widened Highway 1 and replaced numerous interchanges.

According to the ministry, construction of the new Massey Bridge is expected to start in 2017.

Work is underway to develop a technical design and business case, which are to be released to the public later this year.

The BC Government is proposing to offload the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations.

The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efficient program that costs taxpayers less.

Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper,

Unfortunately, what we’ll really end up with is anyone’s guess.

How much more? Well, nobody’s saying.

The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Canada, one could presume that profits will come before environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC.

Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, managed locally and puts the BC environment first. So why is the BC government flipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected officials are already calling a “scam?”

And how is this supposed to make things better for BC?

Danton Heinen to begin college career in Denver

A KEY MEMBER of the Surrey Eagles has flown the coop a year earlier than expected.

Danton Heinen, who was named the BC Hockey League’s rookie of the year last season after leading the Eagles in scoring with 29 goals and 62 points, will leave the team after just one season to head to the University of Denver Pioneers, one of the top programs in the NCAA. Heinen committed to the Pioneers during the 2013/14 season, but his start date at the school had not been nailed down, though it was thought he’d return to the BCHL for one more season before flying south.

Instead, he’ll begin his college career this fall.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave the Eagles and I had a lot of fun playing close to home,” Heinen said. “But everything I’ve heard about Denver is that they’ll have a pretty competitive team next season and I want to be a part of it.”

The 18-year-old was the BCHL’s youngest captain last year, when he was given the ‘C’ after the Eagles’ dealt former captain Brett Mulcahy to the Vernon Vipers in mid-season.

His presence in the lineup will be missed next season by the Eagles, who will look to retool their lineup for the 2014 season.

“Danton is a special player and we are excited for the opportunity ahead of him,” said Blaine Neufeld, the Eagles’ direct of hockey operations.

“We wish the utmost success to Danton and now he will represent our program well.”

The whole kitten kaboodle The Delta Community Animal Shelter is ready to pounce on cat breeding season

everal weeks ago, a strange noise came from a strange place in rural Delta.

Staffers from the Delta Community Animal Shelter (DCAS) were trapping feral cats for their trap-neuter-release (TNR) program when they heard meowing coming from the inside of an old-fashioned metal milk jug.

When one of them had a look inside, a wild cat jumped out, narrowly missing the face of the curious human, and disappeared.

At the bottom of the basin were six helpless kittens.

Taken to the shelter, they were nursed by a cat named Floria before they were happily adopted out.

“She had babies herself, and they had just weaned, so we were lucky,” says shelter manager Sarah Jones. “She’s just lovely.”

Leave it to further serendipity to have the eye of an annual hurricane – no kittens at the shelter – on the first anniversary of the day the staff moved into the new Delta Community Animal Shelter in Tilbury Industrial Park.

It’s an anomaly, says Jones.

“It’s going to change any minute.”

Every year, she explains, in the spring and summer, there are two waves of cat breeding by un-fixed cats that keeps shelters swamped with critters needing help and adoption.

“During the summer months we have anywhere from 50-90 cats in the shelter.”

It’s also the season she wants to drive home the message of responsible pet ownership.

She gives examples: Neutered male cats who go outside are less likely to get into fights, and less likely to contract diseases related to fighting.

“That howling cat that you hear at night, it’s usually a girl (seeking a mate),” says Jones.

Fixed cats are also provided with permanent IDs so they can be easily returned to their owners (cat return rates are about 10 per cent, while it’s 95 per cent for dogs.)

For those seeking cats, the DCAS makes adoption easy with a colour-coded matching system.

Adult cats brought into the shelter are tested for their “felineality” (their feline personality) and given a place on a colour chart based on how valiant, independent and social they are (including

with other animals and kids).

A purple “private investigator,” for example, is shy and often just keeps humans under surveillance; an orange “sidekick” is just plain good company; and green “party animal” loves to play, and will make a toy out of anything.

Potential adopters are asked about their household (Is it a library? A carnival?), how they feel about having their ankles chased, or how much they want to hold their cat.

Talking to potential adopters and using the matchmaking program makes for a more interactive evaluation process rather than just filling out forms, says Jones.

“It helps us a lot and reduces returns,

because we know what you’re expecting, and we know what you want to match for your lifestyle.

“It’s also fun. It’s exciting when you’re adopting a cat.”

The Delta Community Animal Shelter is located at 7505 Hopcott Rd. The shelter is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and weekends from 12-4 p.m. Adoption viewing hours are weekdays from 12-5 p.m. and weekends from 12-4 p.m. Animals available for adoptions are viewable online.

green shelling beans (like broad beans); and the dry shell varieties (like the kidney types). Most popular, of course, are the snap types, both bush and pole.

This, however, has not always been the case. For centuries, snap beans (referring to the snapping sound they make when broken) were not that well liked because the seam along the pod was rather tough, hence the name “string” bean.

We have to thank Calvin Keeny, a New Yorker whose breeding efforts resulted in the first really tasty and tender “stringless” bean – Burpee’s Stringless Green Pod. Introduced in 1898, this bean helped Keeny become known as The Father of the Stringless Bean.

The Tender Green variety, which we still see on racks today, was introduced in 1925. It wasn’t until 1962 that the fabulous Bush Blue Lake was developed. It is still one of the top varieties today and is both flavourful and tender.

Good pole beans arrived even earlier with the introduction of Kentucky Wonder in 1877 by the Ferry-Morse Seed Company. A cross between Kentucky Wonder and Blue Lake resulted in a 1991 All American Selection, Kentucky Blue, one of the best pole varieties.

Beans, by the way, are not hybrids. They are produced as openpollinated crops in the northwestern U.S. All beans are legumes, like peas, and fix nitrogen in the soil as they grow, making them an important nutrient crop.

Beans make wonderful container plants in limited space gardens.

You need a pot the

size of a traditional half barrel. Make a two-metre teepee with three to five bamboo canes, plant the seeds at the base of the canes and watch the pole beans grow. For a much more beautiful effect, alternate your favourite flavourful varieties with some beautiful redflowered Scarlet Runner beans. You might also plant some bush types around the base, blending your favourite green bush, yellow wax and the purple Royal Burgundy.

Beans are one of the easiest vegetables to grow, but the weather needs to be good and warm before they are planted. Consistent night temperatures of 13-16 degrees Celsius are the minimum for beans to grow instead of rotting.

Gently push the seed about two to three centimetres into the soil and space bush beans about eight to 10 cms apart.

You don’t need a lot of plants to get a great crop, usually a quarter or half a packet will do.

Beans: Try a few new ones From page 14 Repeated plantings every two or three weeks will give you continuous cropping. I sow my last crop about mid-July and enjoy beans well into October.

If summer drought becomes a problem, beans are a smart crop because all they need is two centimetres of water per week. All watering should be done early in the day to keep the foliage dry at night. Don’t harvest or work around beans when it’s wet for fear of spreading a fungus-like rust. Beans are also light feeders. If you have enriched the soil with well-rotted manures and quality compost, they require little else.

It’s best to harvest snap beans when the pods are just starting to plump up and are four to five inches long. Lima beans should be picked when the pods are really puffy but before the seeds yellow. Be careful when harvesting beans to cut or pick the pods off without destroying the main stems. If you stop harvesting, most beans will stop producing, so keep picking.

One of the most memorable items brought to this event in recent years is a helmet thought to be from the World War One era.

During the appraisal it was discovered that it was an authentic Roman helmet, which turned out to be quite valuable.

The appraisal cost is $10 for the first item and $5 for each additional item. Registration is not required.

Bean varieties have really expanded. It might be fun to try a few new ones.

Dolicho Del Metro, otherwise know as The Yard Long Bean, is an interesting subtropical that produces delicious 18- to 24-inch pods about the size of a pencil.

They are stringless, sweet, crisp and ideal for your stir-fry dishes.

Royal Burgundy has five-inch purple pods that look and taste wonderful in salads. After cooking for two minutes, they turn green with a purple tinge. Their flowers are also purple.

Borlotto is a striking red and white flowering variety with delicious 25-cm pods. It’s a golden oldie heritage pole bean from the 19th century.

Purple Peacock is another beauty with

deep purple pods and light purple flowers. The added bonus is its ability to handle more cold than other varieties, becoming one of the earliest to enjoy in our garden.

Burpee’s Green ‘n’ Gold beans produce a blend of beautiful and colourful bush beans that really colour up the plant.

So grow some beans and get healthy, enjoy great flavours and add lots of colour both in your cooking and on the vine.
