Man dies in ATV crash near Lake Koocanusa Submitted Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP responded to over 100 calls for service during the May Long Weekend.

The most tragic being a fatal ATV near Suzie Main Forest Service Road in the Koocanusa area. On Friday May

16 at 5:30 p.m., RCMP were notified of the incident by BC Ambulance.

Upon attendance police found at 39 year old male from Calgary deceased as a result of an ATV crash. From the investigation police determined the subject was traveling along a utility right of way

when he lost control.

It’s believed the rider was ejected from the machine, which then rolled onto him. A male from Cranbrook also sustained injuries when his machine rolled and flipped over him causing injury when he went to assist. The injuries were non-life threatening and he was able to perform CPR until emergency personnel arrived and took over.

250 356-9253 On the same night police dealt with a firearm related incident that could have been considerably worse. A subject discharged a firearm in an unsafe manner that entered into a travel trailer, fortunately nobody was hurt. That matter is still under investigation and charges could be recommended.

Throughout the weekend police conducted road checks but in one incident the driver did not want to stop and during the attempt to evade the check almost hit a police officer. A spike belt was deployed, three tires were deflated and police were able to apprehend the driver.

She was impaired and received a 90 day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days. In addition she received violation tickets for Drive Without Due Care and Attention and Fail to Stop for Police.

Over the weekend, police apprehended at least four impaired drivers; there were several drug seizures and a number of violation tickets issued. There were a number of party, noise and disturbance complaints in the rural and city areas.

The Laurie Middle School Grade 8/9 Concert Band travelled to California May 14-20 to take part in “Disney’s Performing Arts” program.

The students participated in a workshop at Disneyland and performed several musical arrangements on the stage in Disney’s California Adventure Park in front of many park visitors. They were given an excellent performance rating of 8 out of 10, a score rarely given.

Other attractions visited were Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament and Universal Studios. Despite temperatures reaching 42 degrees Celsius the students performed very well and had a wonderful time.

Thank you to the community for sponsoring our students in their many fundraisers throughout the year.

Recently, Regional District of East Kootenay Area B Director, Heath Slee, sent in disturbing images of the aftermath of May long weekend partying at Lake Koocanusa.

“This afternoon I took a tour of the Koocanusa shoreline just north of Kikomun bridge,” wrote Slee. “As most folks are aware, Victoria day weekend is the ‘breakout’ weekend of the summer, and I was appalled at the level of disregard for the landscape, and disrespect for local residents. For a moment I thought I was standing in the middle of central landfill the only difference

being, there was no equipment in place to bury the litter.”

Some fingers were immediately pointed to Albertans coming to the area, but RCMP and conservation officers will tell you that this kind of after-party wreckage isn’t limited to people from outside the area. Judging from the amount of empty beer boxes in the pictures, what can be said with assurance is that alcohol was a factor here.

But with conservation officers spread woefully thin in the area and RCMP working to keep the highways and communities safe, what

is to be done to prevent this kind of wilderness abuse from happening in the future?

Should we, as residents, take a more active role in policing the backcountry or should we lobby government (and perhaps pay increased taxes) to increase the amount of conservation officers and RCMP in the region during these months?

Three students of Liela Cooper recently returned from the BC Highland Dance Provincial Championships where they came away victorious!

Victoria Hawkins was 4th Runner up in the province in the 10 & 11 years category. Her sister Erin was 5th Runner Up in the province in the 14 & 15 year category, and older sister Kasey won a bronze medal in the 16& 17 class. Congratulations and good luck to all dancers. Liela’s girls will now be competing at the Open Championship held at the Canadian Championships at the Richmond Oval in July.

Come out and watch them and the rest of the dancers perform at their year end show to be held in the McKim Gym and Thursday May 29th at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 and available at the door. Kids under 6 and seniors are our guest. Performance by the Kimberley Pipe Band.

By Tom Fletcher The B.C. Teachers’ Federation plans to start one-day rotating strikes at schools around the province on Monday, rejecting the offer of a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by the end of the school year.

BCTF president Jim Iker said Tuesday the bonus doesn’t make up for the government’s wage offer of 6.5% over six years. A simultaneous plan to cut teacher wages 5% or more because of strike action is “just so disrespectful, so unnecessary, and we’ll be dealing with it at the Labour Relations Board,” Iker said.

Unless there is some compromise on major issues, one-day strikes with picket lines will be staged at one group of

school districts in each of the first four days next week, with teachers returning to work across the province on Friday, May 30.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the signing bonus and reducing the contract term from 10 years to six were significant efforts to move toward a settlement.

“Unfortunately the announcement today says that the BCTF feels that disrupting classrooms, affecting children and their families is going to help to reach a settlement,” Fassbender told reporters in Vancouver.

Iker reiterated the union’s position that more pay, more teachers and a return to contract language guaranteeing class size and

special needs support are needed to reach a settlement.

Peter Cameron, chief negotiator for the province’s 60 school districts, informed the union last week that a 5% pay cut will be put in place “soon” in response to the first phase of strike action.

The BCTF began work-to-rule action in April, refusing supervision outside classrooms and communication with school management. Rotating strikes were also authorized by the BCTF membership in a March vote, and beginning to shut down schools could result in an effort to cut teacher pay by 10%.

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation has announced that its members will be withdrawing their services for one day commencing Monday, May 26, 2014.

Attracting Winged Creatures to Your Yard As spring takes a firm hold, our yards and gardens come to life. Trees are leafing out, early blooms are adding colour and all sorts of winged creatures are bringing buzz and excitement.

Butterflies are often on top of the list of insects we like to have around us. If you are looking to attract more butterflies to your garden, you have to think like one. What would you be looking for in a perfect garden?

Fortunately for us, what butterflies are looking for is not so different from our ideal of beauty.

Butterflies like sun-loving flowers that produce lots of pollen and nectar, such as asters, daisies, echinacea or hollyhock.

All you need to get started are some of the butterfly-friendly plants in your garden or in a planter on the porch. Once they start blooming, it should not be long until the butterflies come.

They “smell” flowers with sense receptors on their antennae and legs, and butterflies have more

receptors in their feet that allow them to “taste” whether the nectar is good to eat.

Besides the sweet smells and tastes, butterflies are attracted by bright colours like red, yellow and purple. Also important is that the flowers have a sturdy stalk that can support a butterfly while it eats.

Bees - both honeybees and their cousins, the mason bees - are other important pollinators that should be getting an invitation to your yard. They are also looking for nectar- and pollen-rich flowers. If you plant a variety of plants with different flower types, it will ensure that a wide range of pollinators will visit.

Trumpet-shaped flowers will attract butterflies and bumblebees while smaller blooms will appeal to smaller bees with skinnier tongues.

The names of some plants already indicate their ability to attract winged creatures. Buddleia, also known as ‘Butterfly Bush’,

is irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds with its fragrant, arching clusters. The large, honey-scented blooms of this perennial plant flower on first year wood and come in various colours. Removing faded flower heads will encourage the Butterfly Bush to continue blooming.

Monarda, or ‘Bee Balm’, and Asclepias tuberosa, the “Butterfly Weed’, are other examples.

The intense scent of lavender suggests it is also an attractive plant for butterflies. Russian Sage is often seen as an alternative to lavender and it is a favourite with butterflies as well.

Besides offering appetizing food, supplying a source of water and a nice resting spot can also increase your chances of having a yard that will be frequented by a multitude of insects. Pick a sunny, sheltered spot and include a few flat stones or similar ornaments in the garden to create basking spots for butterflies. And think about adding a small bird-

Dr. Julio Montaner, director of the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV-AIDS, said the United Nations continues to use B.C. as a model for its global effort to eliminate the disease.

“Back in 1995 we used to have one person or more dying per day at St. Paul’s Hospital alone, every year because of HIV and AIDS,” Montaner said. “Today, my [physician] residents don’t know what that looks like. We virtually have eliminated death from HIV.” Health Minister Terry Lake said the program is funded with $19.9 million a year, and is recognized as an investment in prevention that saves the province money as well as improving individual well-being for patients.

Information for health care providers on the new testing guidelines is available at a new website, HIVguide.ca.

Doctors will continue to offer HIV-AIDS tests to patients of any age who present with new or worsening medical conditions that require lab tests, show symptoms of HIV infection, are pregnant or if they request an HIV test.

at Mount Baker continues to have a busy, productive, fun-filled year. Our drummers, under the direction of Sandra Luke and Peter Wegener, are doing very well. Practice is every other Wednesday at lunch hour. Students are finishing up their various trades and occupation-related certificates all over the community. Some of our students have been accepted into Project Heavy Duty, and are eagerly anticipating that experience.

Our Elders’ Programme is thriving, with more and more classrooms hosting Elders in a wide variety of courses. The Elders are getting to know the students better, and vice-versa; it’s a great addition to our school.

MBSS students have been working on a drill powered vehicle in auto tech.

The Go-Kart is made from wood and steel attachments and is very lightweight. It will run off an electric cordless drill. This has been a combined effort between teachers and students during and after school. All involved are very excited and proud of their accomplishments.

Up-coming events the Wild Warriors (Aboriginal Student Leadership Group) are over-seeing include: Ktunaxa Flag Raising on June 16 and a potluck supper in honour of National Aboriginal Day. This will take place at Parkland Middle School at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25. This family event is a potluck, our group will have stew and fry bread and bannock available to augment the favourite dishes people bring.

Everyone is welcome, there will be music and dance for all to enjoy.

Guess What? The theatre department has one more show! Next Wednesday (May 21), the Adapted Theatre class is performing our new play, Tales From the ‘Mat at the Key City Theatre at 7:00.

The play is a series of scenes that take place at a laundromat called The Agitate and Tumble. Greg Sandberg plays a beleaguered manager foiled by Mackenzie Wake as a happy go lucky employee.

Also in the cast are: Dawson Jackson (as a sock stealing monster), Justin Watson, Rebecca White, Jessica Klassen, Bryce Spurr, Cody Johnson, Kieran Pearson, Shelley Joubert, Becky Lockhart, Cindy Hagen, Tracey Rutten, Jody Buckingham, Nolan Ackert and Clement Ducourneau.

Urinetown ran at the Key City Theatre from May 8th to May 11th. Directed by Mary Hamilton, Conducted by Scott Martin, and Choreographed by Siona Jackson. Mines Act Fees 1. Currently, no fees are charged for permits granted under the Mines Act, despite fees charged to the forest, oil & gas, transportation & tourism industries. Mining is growing in BC with record amounts being invested in exploration, new mines & expansions to existing mines.

2. Since 2011, we’ve lowered the turnaround time for a Notice of Work from 110 days to 55 days. This required extra resources and the Ministry of Finance asked the Mines Ministry to start contributing to the cost through fees.

3. One round of consultation with the industry based on a set of proposed fees is now complete and the ministry is starting a second round.

An early decision: fees will not be charged to the grass roots level of mineral or placer exploration. Other final decisions about the rest of the exploration and operating mines will be made after this next round of consultations with the industry.

Spring flooding a possibility in the region With warmer conditions expected to settle in over the next few weeks, and a higher than normal snow pack, the RDEK is reminding residents about the importance of being aware and prepared for the possibility of spring flooding.

The snow pack is currently sitting at about 135% of normal, and we haven’t yet hit our spring freshet. “We know we are going to see that snow make its way into our rivers and streams over the next few weeks, but

it’s important to understand that the level of the snow pack is less significant than the way the melting occurs. For example, if we have a stretch of warm days and cool nights, the melt will be completely different than if we go into a string of really hot days, warm nights and rain,” says RDEK Communications Manager, Loree Duczek. “Having said that, there are a number of things the public can do to help themselves and help us be prepared in the event

flooding occurs, including: staying away from fast moving or high water, preparing their properties if they are in an area that typically experiences spring flooding, and reporting any unusual or rapidly changing conditions in rivers and streams.”

If people notice creeks or rivers become suddenly chocolatey brown with large chunks of debris or if the flow suddenly decreases or stops, they should report it as soon as possible so the situation can be properly

Submitted On Sunday, May 25th, a fur-friendly walk will be held at Wasa Lake at 1 p.m. to raise money for the Lions Foundation Dog Guide program.

Registration takes place from 12 noon – 1 pm at the Wasa Lions Picnic Site with the walk following. After the walk everyone meets back at the Picnic Site for food, fun, games and prizes.

“We knew this was a critical project for the entire East Kootenay region, so we made it happen,” says Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

“It takes time, energy and devotion to move major improvements like this forward, and now people can actually see all that hard work paying off.”

“This is a big day for everyone who made this project a reality. These upgrades to our regional hospital will improve the care we provide to patients from all of our East Kootenay communities,” says Interior Health board chair Norman Embree.

The new ICU unit will replace the current four-bed unit and feature two additional highacuity beds, which will help relieve pressure on the intensive care unit.

The integrated design includes a 787 squaremetre (approximately 8,470 square-feet) addition on the northeast side of the existing hospital. The size and design of the new ICU will provide better flow through the unit for physicians and staff, as well as providing additional privacy. The

The project also includes a significant electrical upgrade at the facility. The new electrical system will improve the power supply to the entire hospital, optimize the electrical system performance and allow capacity to expand for future power needs. The electrical infrastructure will be located in the basement of the new addition.

“It is always rewarding for the Foundation to see the generous contributions of our donors turning into something concrete and real for the patients and caregivers we support,” said Brian Clifford, Foundation Chair. “We are honoured to be part of this exciting occasion.”

“Our MLA and other important partners have allowed us to make many major improvements to our regional centre’s Ambulatory Care, MRI, Digital Mammography and Emergency Department over the last decade and this new intensive care unit will be the cement that holds everything together,” says Dr. Lawrence Jewett, EKRH and regional chief of staff. “A new ICU will reduce some of the need to transport critical heart and stroke patients outside the region for care and will be a great support to our recruitment of specialist physicians to Cranbrook.”

The estimated total project cost is $20 million. The Province is funding $11.93 million, the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District is contributing $7.95 million, and the East Kootenay Foundation for Health is contributing $120,000.

New board members for Interior Health Submitted Interior Health is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to its Board of Directors.

“These appointments strengthen community connections and help ensure we maintain a regional perspective in health services planning and delivery,” said Board Chair Norman Embree.

Tammy Tugnum is General Manager at Cariboo Chevrolet Buick GMC Limited in Williams Lake. She has been working there for 19 years. Always active in her community, she is currently the President of the Williams Lake Harvest Fair and Director of the Cariboo Foundation Hospital Trust.

Tugnum was appointed on March 31, 2014.

A resident of Cranbrook for more than 25 years, Dennis Rounsville was Executive VicePresident and most recently was President of the Forest Products Group for Tembec Inc. from 2005 until 2013, when he retired.

Rounsville has served on multiple boards including the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce and Blue Lake Forest Education Society. He is a member of the Association of BC Forest Professionals, past Chair of the Council of Forest Industries and past Chair of the Interior Lumber Manufacturers Association. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of British Columbia and completed the Executive Business Management Program from the Banff School of Advanced Management.

Rounsville was appointed on April 1, 2014.

The Interior Health Board of Directors oversees operations, works with management to establish overall strategic direction for the organization,

and ensures appropriate community consultation. The Board also regularly reviews the organization’s longterm plans, significant issues affecting the organization, and evaluates results. Board members are appointed by the provincial government’s

1. Steeped in Tradition. Hanging flower baskets have been around for a long time, many believe the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, constructed about 3000 years ago are the inspiration for modern containers. One of the most famous examples in Canada are the hanging flower baskets in Victoria, BC. Each year in June, workers hang about 1,500 from lamp posts across the city. The plants for the baskets are grown in the city’s own nursery and a total of 25 plants is included in each basket.

2. What’s in a Basket? The hanging baskets in Victoria are a wire and moss construction, perfect for creating that flower ball signature look. However, there are many options when it comes to creating the perfect planter. For hanging baskets, gardeners usually prefer light-weight containers, such as plastic or fibre pots. Cedar boxes give a more rustic appeal, but also have some added weight.

3. Anything and the Kitchen Sink. When it comes to containers for your flower display, there are many options beside hanging baskets and your imagination and the space you have available really are the limit. A vintage teacup can make a cute centrepiece for your bistro set on the patio. Old farm equipment, a clawfoot tub, even an old toilet or a wheelbarrow these are all great choices for a flower container and potential conversation pieces for your yard.

4. Off to a Good Start. Soil from your outdoor garden is generally not suited for container gardening. Soil-based or soil-less potting mixes are your best option for baskets and planters. They are sterilized to destroy weeds, diseases and pests, offer good drainage and hold water and nutrients very well.

5. The First Great Meal. Potting mixes usually contain no or very limited amounts of nutrients, so mixing some slow-release fertilizer, specially formulated for containers, into the soil at time of planting will start your containers off right. Throughout the growing season, you can keep them topped up by either giving them a top-dressing of container food or using some water-soluble plant food. Try applying half as much as the package directions recommend, but apply it twice as often.

6. And Now a Drink! Watering is another very important aspect when it comes to container gardening. Especially smaller planters can dry out quite quickly. Water whenever the potting soil feels dry beneath the surface - this could be once a day or once a week, depending on the weather and other conditions. So when possible, do a quick daily inspection and never let a container pot dry out completely.

7. Finding the Ingredients. As with the container you are using to display your creation, there are endless combinations of plants. It all comes down to your taste and a bit of research. Is the container going to be in a sun or shade location? Check the tags that come with your plants; they will give you the information on light requirements and should also tell you how tall the plant should get and how far it might spread.

8. Spills and Thrills. When doing the final design of your masterpiece, you can let yourself be guided by common design principles or just wing it. Look for contrast or stay withs shades of one colour; make a bold colour statement or play with soft foliage textures. If you are looking for inspiration, the growers at Proven Winners have set up some step-by-step “recipes” for their stunning creations, using ‘Thrillers’ (plants that grow tall for the centre of a planter), ‘Spillers’ (plants to tumble over the side) and ‘Fillers’ (the plants to fill in-between spaces).

9. Not just for Annuals Anymore. Flower containers are usually made up of colourful annuals, such as cascading waves of petunias in sun baskets or plumes of lush begonias in the shade. Perennials, however, can add a whole new dimension and let you create containers for years to come with proper overwintering techniques. Suitable plants include echinacea, salvia, sedum, hostas, ferns and grasses.

10. Fairies Welcome. Another type of container design is fairy gardening - using small and slow growing plants or even bonsai evergreens to create magical miniature worlds where pebbles become boulders and sticks turn into fallen tree trunks.

Bruce Larry Schurer April 13, 1961 - May 19, 2014 Bruce passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, May 19, 2014 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook from Cancer.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Olga, son David, mother Bjorg, brother Kurt (MaryAnn), his children Jennifer and Stephen, sister Monica (Kevin) and her children Matthew and Sean and relatives and good friends.

A gathering in Bruce's honour will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook (2200 - 2nd Street South).

OBITUARY Daniel Vance Smart (Scruffy) June 17, 1955 – May 15, 2014 It is with deep sadness that the family of Daniel Vance Smart announces his sudden passing on the morning of May 15, 2014, at the age of 58. Danny was born in Cranbrook, BC, on June 17th, 1955. He spent his early childhood in Cranbrook, then Fruitvale, where he spent his teenage years.

Danny always had a strong connection to Cranbrook. As a young man of 19, he came back to the area starting his adventures in life. This is where he met his soul mate Heather in 1974 and they married in 1977. Their daughter Charity Lynne was born in Cranbrook in 1978, being a young father; he started the foundation for his new family by moving to Fort. St. John; where they expanded their family with the birth of their son Chad Daniel in 1980.

Danny was a man of adventure and dreams, these dreams took him and his family on journeys all across the province of BC, where they established many roots and built strong friendships that lasted throughout the years. Danny loved the mountains, lakes and surrounding areas of Cranbrook and moved his family back in 1993, where they have lived ever since.

Danny had many interests and hobbies, from drag racing, Nascar, gold prospecting, camping, fishing, and playing his guitars. He loved the outdoors and was very connected to nature. It was because of this that he enjoyed operating heavy equipment high on the mountaintops and deep in the forest. Danny enjoyed the camaraderie of his work life and the friendships made with his co-workers.

Danny's greatest passion in life was his family. He was always making time for them. One of his favourite family events was making weekend breakfasts, a time for catching up and having some laughs. He was over the moon for his grandchildren, spending endless hours watching gymnastic meets, going for walks, reading stories, sleepovers and having cuddle time. He would walk to the ends of the earth for these grandbabies, and they knew this through the twinkle in his eyes with every bear hug squeeze they gave him.

Danny was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He leaves behind his wife Heather, daughter Charity (Ryan) Ashby, Son Chad (Dana) Smart, his grandchildren, Makayla, Marissa, Isaac and Jordan, his parents Hazen and Laura Smart, Brother’s Tim (Janice) Smart, Lindsay Smart, Sister Carolyn Smart, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and his friends.

Danny will be deeply missed by all who loved him but his memory will be forever in our hearts.

A celebration of Danny’s life will be held Friday, May 23rd at 1:00 at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook, followed by a tea. Heinrich “Hank“ Wieckhoff June 20, 1935-May 16, 2014 Born June 20, 1935 in Bordesholm Germany passed away on May 16, 2014 at the age of 78 at his home in Kimberley BC with his family at his side.

Hank was the first of 6 children born to Alma and Walter Wieckhoff. After receiving his Master Bakers degree in Germany he immigrated to Canada in 1958.

Hank travelled across Canada, settling in Ocean Falls, B.C., where he met and married his future ex-wife Micheline Boillat, May 1 1962. The couple relocated to Kimberley, B.C where they raised their 5 daughters.

Hank enjoyed the outdoors and was awed by all creation.

During his retirement years he continued to enjoy the outdoors and baking pastries for neighbors and friends.

Hank was pre-deceased by his parents Alma and Walter Wieckhoff.

Hank is survived by his daughters Ruth (Jamie) Milton, Yvonne (Glen) Dickey, Reesa Northcott, Bruce Northcott, Amber (Mark) Anderson, Kyana (Mike) Peardon.

13 Grandchildren; Kalen (Ashley) Dickey , Dustin (Rebecca) Dickey, Hayden, Courtland, and Halsey Northcott. Tanner and Kyanna Milton, Lucas and Jacob Anderson, Michelle, Brett, Anson and Owen Peardon. Papa Hank is also survived by his 2 great grandchildren Charlie and Otis Dickey.

Hank also leaves behind his family in Germany,a brother Karl-Heinz, sisters; Helga, Grete, Antje and Dorte. As well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

His legacy to his family is his great sense of humor, his positive outlook, his strong faith in God and his ability to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.

Jean Sophie Fuller passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 8, 2014. Jean was born on August 2, 1929 in Fernie, BC to Joseph and Abigail Shingar. She was a wonderful wife and mother and truly loved life. She was employed as a waitress for a time but she loved working for the post office. Jean started some of the rural mail routes in the Cranbrook area. She hauled mail to and from the airport for over 30 years. Jean delivered newspapers from Salmo to Kimberley for a few years as well.

Jean loved her family, her friends and talking to people anywhere and anytime. She loved travelling, all things in nature, music and old movies. She was a loving, caring person and was loved by many people.

Jean was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Abigail Shingar, her husband Wilfred Percy Fuller, her daughter Sharon Osborne, her grandson Brian Amell and her brother Harvey Shingar.

Jean leaves to cherish her memory her children: Elaine (Denzil) Cooke, Anne Amell (George), Laura (Earl) Pocha, Randy Fuller, Linda Fuller (Dean Foraie) and Ethle (Greg) Willison. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great grandchildren and one sister, Esther Ponic.
