Fifth annual Freedom Run taking place next month Funds raised from event support the 100 Classroom Project in Afghanistan

T

he fifth annual Freedom Run will take place this year on June 1st to raise funds for A Better World’s 100 Classroom Project in Afghanistan.

The project works to build schools in the northern Afghanistan province of Jowzjan (Jawzan). To date, 48 classrooms within four schools have been built and funds from previous Freedom Run events have totalled more than $65,000.

“I think it’s very important for us to validate the desire that these kids have to go to school,” said Project Manager Azalea Lehndorff of A Better World.

“For many kids, the alternative is either forced marriage or ending up being involved in extremist ideas. Providing an alternative is really powerful.”

Last year, the Freedom Run raised $16,000, which helped bring to creation an all girls’ high school. Two more schools will be constructed, providing an opportunity for 2,000 more girls to receive an education.

The Freedom Run contains 2l km, 5 km and 10 km distance challenges.

Walking, running and even baby strolling is welcome. Contestants can compete by themselves or as part of a team.

Lehndorff said this is an exciting milestone year, as upon completion of the new facilities, the 100 Classroom Project will be over halfway to its goal.

“Right now, we’ve completed 32 rooms. We’re trying to get the construction started on the next few schools. We do currently have all of the funding in place.”

The funds from this year are being allocated to new desks for 16 new classrooms. Each desk is only $50 and provides space enough for three girls to work.

By the end of 2014, the organization will have completed 61 classrooms in Afghanistan.

“I’m guessing, if we can raise the same amount as last year, we can furnish all the classrooms for two schools, and we might have some left over to start a library or other service.”

Lehndorff founded the project after attending the Canadian University College (CUC) where she learned about the quality of life, education availability and specific needs in Afghanistan.

“I wanted to do something, so I connected with A Better World and launched the project in 2010. We’ve been doing ‘Freedom Runs’ since that time,” explained Lehndorff.

She added she would like to extend an invitation for volunteer services that still needs more hands on deck. Volunteers are needed to direct runners during the event, hand out water at water stations and early in the morning

for race-day registrations.

Through fundraising, participants become eligible to win an iPad. Two will be given away – one for the highest fundraiser and one in a draw on race day.

Fundraising can begin before the event and there is no limit to how much a person or team can raise/ donate.

“Last year, a fundraiser who won’t let me talk about him by name, raised over $2,000,” said Lehndorff.

She laughed, “It’s really cool, having people coming together to make things like that happen.”

Lehndorff added this is a cause especially close to her heart. She

said her family was not in support of education, which led her and her sister to leave home as youths and support themselves through a boarding high school.

Lehndorff was later accepted into the CUC, which prompted her to seek out ways to reform education access in Afghanistan.

She said the information she learned at college combined with her youth experience was what “Sparked something in (her).

“This project is really meaningful to me.”

Lehndorff’s positive impact has created the opportunity for nearly 8,000 children to have education access in Jowzjan.

FCSS happy to host Seniors’ Week Fair

“It’s a celebration of seniors,” said Ruth Riffin, senior’s program coordinator at Lacombe FCSS. She added it is important for Lacombe to recognize its seniors, because they

are responsible for many of the things Lacombians have to enjoy today.

“They’ve laid the foundation for our next generation,” said Riffin. She added that seniors were the forerunners of many programs, organizations and initiatives that exist in the community today.

To kick off their Seniors’ Week celebrations, FCSS is hosting a seniors’ fair at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

About 30 booths will be set up at the fair with information and products targeting seniors.

For example, Lacombe FCSS will be at the fair offering information on what programs it has available to seniors like Meals on Wheels and Connex transport. She said the fair is a good way for seniors to learn what products and services are available to them.

Having fun is important at any age, so there will be some entertainment at the fair as well.

Riffin said there will be a fashion show by local ladies from the Lacombe Seniors Lodge and a performance from a local belly-dancing group.

Also performing at the fair will be a seniors’ gymnastics team.

Riffin said the team, made up by members aged 55 and over, is actually gearing up to compete at an upcoming nationals tournament.

“It’s a full day of activities,” said Riffin. She added that in the past, the fair has seen between 100 and 200 attendees but this year organizers are hoping to boost numbers.

“It’s been okay but I’d like it to be better.”

But the fair is just the start of Lacombe’s Seniors’ Week celebrations.

There are a number of social events held throughout the week including the ice cream social on Tuesday at the dining room in the Lacombe Hospital Long Term Care Facility, the Strawberry Tea at Kozy Korner on Wednesday, the Come and Go Tea at Mary C. Moore Public Library on Thursday (with readings by the Lacombe Writers Group) and the Seniors Garden Party at the Lacombe Seniors Lodge on Friday afternoon.

In addition to the socials, there are also a few events targeted at getting seniors out and about in the community and seeing what Lacombe has to offer them.

On Tuesday morning there will be a Health and Fitness class at the CUC gym, a nature walk around Cranna Lake on Wednesday and a tour of Lacombe’s downtown murals on Saturday.

Riffin said the nature walk is a new event aimed at promoting fitness for seniors and will offer explanations on how to use the fitness equipment that was installed around Cranna Lake last year.

She added it is important for seniors to remain active and think about their physical health as they enter their golden years.

While all the activities taking place during Seniors’ Week are aimed at seniors, anyone is welcome. Riffin said in the past, it has been common for some younger members of the community to participate in events along with their parents or grandparents.

Blackfalds to hold annual trade show

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express The annual Blackfalds Trade Show will be held later this month in the new Abbey Centre.

Something that parents might find nice about this year’s event, which is slated for May 31st, is that a designated children’s area has been created in one of the three courts in the Abbey Centre gym.

“The parents can just come in, drop their kids off at the supervised area and the kids can play with the different balls, as they’ll be able to use the court,” said Chamber of Commerce President Carlene Kowalchuk.

The Chamber of Commerce comes to-

gether to promote businesses, community events, community concerns and financial interests of a town, officials said. Through them, the Trade Show is made available year after year.

“This year will be a lot busier because we’ve had a lot more advertising,” said Kowalchuk. “We have 51 vendors that are paid, and we actually have a lot of vendors that are small businesses that aren’t big brand names.”

Kowalchuk said some name-brand vendors are going to be appearing at the show, but many of the vendors are their own independent business. Most of the vendors are local but some have come from as far as Fort McMurray to be a part of the

trade show. Some of the vendor examples include hair extension, clothing for kids and adults, accessories and even a non-forprofit food vendor.

“The gym will be divided into three sections. Two of these will include the actual Trade Show, where the third section will house a supervised kids play area,” explained Kowalchuk.

Chamber members can earn ‘chamber bucks’ to be spent at Blackfalds vendors.

Information will be given at the fair as to which businesses will accept the ‘chamber bucks’.

‘Chamber bucks’ are earned by filling out a ‘passport’ by having each vendor sign for it after their booth has been vis-

ited. This passport also enters a person in a draw for major prizes.

“There are over $1,500 in door prizes.

Each vendor has offered to produce some sort of prize.”

With this model of the show, vendors can encourage people to check out their stock while offering incentives (passport stamps and prizes) to raise product awareness.

“The whole idea of the Chamber is to promote local businesses,” said Kowalchuk.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has photographic evidence that high doses of Vitamin C and lysine can not only prevent, but can also reverse atherosclerosis.

But I’d bet my last dollar that Flaherty did not receive this natural, safe and effective remedy. In my 64 years of practicing medicine I cannot think of one discovery that is more important than the fact that atherosclerosis can now be prevented and reversed, important because this generative problem triggers a ton of cardiovascular problems.

Yet cardiologists continue to believe that cholesterol-lowering drugs are the be-all-and-end-all to prevent heart attack. This is the world’s greatest ex-

ample of how hundreds of millions of pharmaceutical dollars can brainwash the minds of educated specialists.

It’s unfortunate because a high concentration of Vitamin C and lysine, called Medi-C Plus, is now available in Health Food Stores in Canada that could decrease these deaths.

About Flaherty’s son, one he loved so dearly. It’s reported that his young son was stung by an insect and developed encephalitis, resulting in lifelong disability. Could this have been prevented?

OPINION Voting more important Once again the Conservatives have used their majority muscle to push through an unnecessary bill that no one has asked for.

On May 13th, Bill C-23 passed third reading. The bill has ironically been dubbed the Fair Elections Act even though the bill actually does less to make elections fair and more to make them difficult.

Pierre Poilievre, the man spearheading the movement behind the bill, has said that the Fair Elections Act will, “Allow Elections Canada to focus on its core mandate of running elections fairly and efficiently.”

If by saying that, Poilievre actually means the Fair Elections Act will allow the government more control over elections, prevent Elections Canada from freely promoting voting and make it more difficult for Canadians (particularly students, seniors and the newly relocated) to vote, he is absolutely right.

Now before the Senate, the bill is expected to become law before the next

federal election. Poilievre has said this shows the Fair Elections Act has a lot of support in both houses.

Once again, he isn’t saying exactly what he means.

A more accurate statement would be that the Conservatives support the bill and are in control of both the House of Commons and the Senate, so they will use their majority to muscle the legislation through despite any opposition.

If anyone is wondering why the Conservatives have suddenly decided to respond to the lack of citizens crying out for election reform, Poilievre has said that Bill C-23 has come about in response to Elections Canada failing to boost voter turnout.

Making it more difficult for voters to vote is certainly a counter-intuitive attempt at improving voter numbers, but it is one that we hope succeeds because it is the only way to get rid of this pointless and unjust law.

Both the major opposition parties have loudly

voiced their opposition to the Fair Elections Act, even after its more recent amendments. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau has even said the Liberals would repeal the law should they form government in the next election.

Voting is the most power-

ful weapon the average Canadian has when it comes to the political process and it is one that is grossly under-used. Policies like this demonstrate how important voting is. Keep that in mind when it comes time to head to the polls next year.

Bill C-23 is an affront to

Canadian democracy and the Fair Elections Act is a laughable name for the legislation.

Hopefully, the bill (or law as it will likely be by then) will be a rallying cause for Canadians to exercise their right to vote in the 2015 election.

Every year around this time, at the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year, I find myself writing about or telling someone how Nintendo is going to die if something doesn’t change soon.

This year, as it has been the previous two years, Nintendo posted a year-end loss and fell incredibly short of its projected sales.

So far, Nintendo has done little to amend this problem, other than announcing that they will be will be adopting a new platform using their software and hardware to create products aimed at increasing ‘quality of life.’ Some have speculated this will mean expanding into more products like WiiFit and Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training, but Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said nothing to clarify what exactly that will entail.

Iwata has also said that he is still confident that Wii U sales will in-

crease and that the console’s best days are still ahead of it. However, seeing that the console has been on the market for a year and a half already and this year’s sales fell drastically short after projections were cut, I can’t say that I share Iwata’s confidence.

Instead, I feel that the Wii U’s limited game catalogue is going to hold the console back.

Without some firm release dates for games in some of Nintendo’s trademark franchises (and perhaps a price drop in the console itself) gamers are going to be turned off from the Wii U and more inclined to spend their money on other eighth gen consoles.

Which brings me to the real reason I believe Nintendo has been struggling so much in recent years.

Its audience is too narrow.

Nintendo has always focused on children and family-friendly videogame franchises.

From these franchises were born some of the greatest games ever created as well as lovable characters like Mario, Donkey Kong, Link and Kirby.

While these franchises have huge appeal to older audiences as well as the younger ones they are targeted to, older audiences want

to be able to play more mature games on their console as well.

However, great franchises like Donkey Kong Country, Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda haven’t really grown up with gamers (and they shouldn’t, to be honest) and Nintendo doesn’t have a lot of other content that appeals to adult gamers.

Transforming itself to be more successful is something that has worked for Nintendo in the past (Nintendo began as a playing card printing company) and while this new platform might sound promising, Iwata’s lack of clarity in what it entails is also disturbing.

However, Nintendo has also said it will begin allowing licensing of some of their better known characters for use outside of just their video games.

Again, it’s hard to imagine what this means as most of Nintendo’s most recognizable characters already appear on everything from stickers to plush toys to sports drinks to umm…shower heads.

Having said that, there is one licensing option available to Nintendo that would definitely help them.

License the franchises of those famous characters for use on other consoles.

It’s a move that Nintendo has been incredibly resistant to thus far, but it would undoubtedly work.

While adult gamers aren’t willing to spend money on the Wii U and limit our gaming experience to enjoy the classic Nintendo franchises, we would gladly sink our money (and a lot of it) into them for use on more mature consoles like the Xbox One and PS4.

To those who don’t care about video games this might not seem very significant, but try to appreciate it from this perspective.

Nintendo made its name by revolutionizing the home entertainment industry. It succeeded where Atari failed in bringing video games into the living room and continued to be an innovative leader in entertainment technology with ground-breaking systems like the Wii. Basically, to the rest of the world, Nintendo disappearing from the video game industry would be akin to Ford disappearing from the motor vehicle industry, the loss of a huge mogul.

For gamers, it’s the loss of a brand once synonymous with video games and the cause of many fond childhood memories. news@lacombeexpress.com

CITY BRIEFS SPRING CLEAN UP BEGINS THIS WEEK The City of Lacombe’s annual spring Community Clean Up Campaign – a special refuse pickup that provides residents with an opportunity to dispose of household and yard refuse that one would not normally place in the regular garbage bins – will be held from May 20th to May 29th.

“We are looking forward to working residents to keep basements and garages uncluttered, and neighbourhood alleyways free of debris,” said Infrastructure Services Director Matthew Goudy. “The bi-annual clean up campaigns, along with the annual toxic roundup and other waste management initiatives are making an important and lasting difference in creating a cleaner, safer, more livable Lacombe.”

Residents are asked to organize and separate their items into piles for pick up at the front of the property by 7:00am on the day your area is scheduled. All items must be sorted and neatly tied or bagged. Trees, brush or limbs cannot be more than

10 feet long or they will not be picked up.

Do not place items on the sidewalk, alley or street; items must be left at the property line. Debris left in the alleys will not be picked up. Ensure that pedestrian and vehicle traffic are not blocked. Do not place refuse next to or touching the bin used for normal household garbage pickup.

Materials should be sorted according to type such as metal, appliances, furniture, wood and garden waste.

BLACKFALDS FIELD HOUSE SOCIETY DISSOLVES A local non-profit organization which has been fundraising since June 2009 will officially be done at the end of May. As of May 31, the Blackfalds Field House Society will dissolve after having helped raise $1.5 million for the multi-purpose recreation facility, the Abbey Centre, which opened its doors March 31.

“When we had our establishment meeting in June of 2009 we knew we would be committing to at least a five year project,” said President Carol Simpson. She added that the group is proud to have been part of the legacy of what was known for years as the Blackfalds Field House Project. “To know that we helped play a pivotal role with our advocacy and support of this facility is very important to the society members. We are amazed to realize that our original goal of fundraising $750,000 ended up doubling in amount. No local group has ever fundraised such a large amount for a project in the community.

“We feel comfortable at this time dissolving the society knowing our goals were accomplished and the Abbey Centre is up and running.”

Abbey Centre Grand Opening Celebration planning is well underway by Town staff to celebrate and recognize all of the contributors, including the Blackfalds Field House Society. Celebrations will take place May 22 – 25th.

NEW PARKLET PILOT PROJECT TO ENHANCE DOWNTOWN LACOMBE Two parklets, temporary public spaces, have been installed in downtown Lacombe. One is located at 50 St. and the other in the Flatiron Block parking lot. These locations will provide people opportunity to sit, eat, chat and enjoy Lacombe. The parklets are in support Lacombe’s Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP) and will hopefully encourage people to get out and enjoy Lacombe’s historic downtown.

Planning Intern Josh de Jon said that these two locations were strategically chosen because they both see a high volume of pedestrian traffic.

“We wanted to install these parklets where the people are, while at the same time taking as little parking away as possible,” said de Jong. “The two locations, one situated at the end of an underused space within a parking lot and the other in front of a vacant lot, will help the City evaluate public interest for a more permanent public space in downtown.”

If the idea of a permanent public space downtown doesn’t gain public support, all of the street furniture (benches, planters and such) can be used at other locations throughout the city once the pilot project is complete. According to de Jong, the pilot projects are useful in that they allow the municipality to gauge the long-term viability of such initiatives.

What’s New Young Driver Month The Lacombe Traffic Safety Committee would like to remind everyone that May is Young Driver Month on the Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar. This month’s focus is educating and enforcing laws relating to young drivers to ensure the safety of new and inexperienced drivers.

From 2008 to 2012, 216 young drivers between 14 - 24 years of age were killed and 13,116 young drivers were injured in collisions on Alberta roads. Although young drivers represent only a small percentage of the province’s licensed drivers, they have the highest casualty collision rates.

Reminder Spray Park Opening Delayed The Lacombe Spray Park opening will be postponed until June 2 after renovations are complete. New Community Economic Development Plan takes Shapes At their May 12, 2014, regular meeting, City Council endorsed a plan that will begin the process of forming an Olds Institute-style organization to support local community economic development efforts. This is the first step in developing the new Community Economic Development (CED) Plan, which will help provide priorities for social, cultural and economic growth in Lacombe.

What is the Olds Institute? It is a collaborative organization where residents, businesses and leaders work together to take a coordinated approach to the development, growth and sustainability of their community. It has successfully spawned initiatives such Mountain View Power, much like Echo Energy here in Lacombe, and most recently O-Net, the first communityowned fiber optic network that provides HDTV, phone and high speed internet services to every business and citizen of Olds.

“This approach has proven to be very positive for Olds, and we see similar possibilities for Lacombe.” said Mayor Steve Christie. “We need to tap into the talent in our community and start building shared knowledge and capacity for a prosperous and sustainable city.”

According to Community and Economic Development Manager Guy Lapointe, Lacombe must take advantage of financial partnership opportunities and leverage local capital with provincial and federal dollars whenever possible.

Lapointe states that the institute model has proven some initiatives can be better served by organizations utilizing this consensus decision-making approach.

“In the case of Olds, there are projects where they were able to secure funding that may not have been available to municipalities,” said Lapointe. “It opens up options, thrives on community participation, and allows inclusive decisionmaking processes to tap into the wealth of expertise and knowledge that exist within a community.”

Two concurrent tasks are up next in the CED planning process. Some specific actions will be selected that are in line with the new Municipal Sustainability Plan, which was developed from extensive consultation with the community.

Additionally, an implementation plan will be drawn up to outline the steps needed to build the new Olds Institute organization.

Enforcement Services would like to remind recreational vehicle owners not to park their motor homes, holiday trailers, campers, tent trailers, or any buses or trucks converted for use as recreation vehicles, on any highway or street within the City of Lacombe unless the trailer is attached to a vehicle. New Parklets for Downtown Lacombe Two parklets or temporary public spaces have been installed in Downtown Lacombe, one on 50 Street and in the other in the Flatiron Block parking lot.

These locations will provide people an opportunity to sit, eat, chat, and enjoy Lacombe. The parklets are in support of Lacombe’s Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP), and will hopefully encourage people to get out and enjoy Lacombe’s historic downtown.

Fire Safety around fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, stationary& portable barbecues The Lacombe Fire Department would like to remind residents that there are certain regulations regarding the construction and use of fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbeques.

Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbecues that burn combustible material must be located in a rear yard with a minimum of 3.4 meters (10 feet) clearance from buildings, property lines and combustible materials.

City Planning Intern Josh de Jong said that these two locations were strategically picked because they both see a high volume of pedestrian traffic.

“We wanted to install these parklets where the people are, while at the same time taking as little parking away as possible” said de Jong. “The two locations, one situated at the end of an underused space within a parking lot, and the other in front of a vacant lot, will help the City evaluate public interest for a more permanent public space in the downtown.”

The parklets also align with an objective of the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan (DARP), to provide a permanent public space in the downtown area. The city is fortunate to have the great space in front of the Lacombe Memorial Centre, and it is hoped that these parklets will help expand the public space network within the downtown.

“Since April, we have adopted new guidelines for developing

“These three projects will hopefully work together to increase the downtown’s vibrancy, which is one of DARP’s objectives.”

Spring Community Clean-Up Campaign May 20-29, 2014 Please place all items for disposal at the front your property, and not on the sidewalk, alley or street; items must be left at the property line. Debris left in the alleys will not be picked up. Ensure that pedestrian and vehicle traffic are not blocked. Do not place refuse next to or touching the bin used for normal household garbage pickup.

Please have items place out by 7:00am on the day your area is scheduled.

Refuse must be organized and separated into piles for pick up. It is the responsibility of the homeowner to separate these piles. All items must be sorted and neatly tied, bundled or bagged. Trees, brush or limbs cannot be more than 10 feet long or they will not be picked up. Please separate material according to the list below for pick up: •Brush & Wood – treated, painted, and stained wood needs to be separated into a general rubble pile. Do not include construction material in this pile.

•Leaves, Sod and Garden Waste – these can also be taken to either the Wolf Creek recycle site. Leaves & garden waste can be taken to the green colored yard waste bins spread throughout the City for disposal.

Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbecues must be constructed of bricks or concrete blocks, or heavy gauge metal, or other suitable non-combustible components, have a spark arrestor mesh screen to contain sparks over the fire, and must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.

It is always a good idea to wet down the backyard before using fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and stationary barbecues, to minimize the risk of flying sparks starting a grass fire or worse. Also, be courteous about nuisance smoke that could be offensive to your neighbours.

Only burn wood, charcoal briquettes, propane or natural gas in fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbecues.

Flames must not be higher than ninety (90) cm (3.28 feet) above the fire pit or the barbeque fire box.

Please remember that the use of fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and stationary barbeques may be restricted or prohibited during a fire ban. Please refer to the Fire Services Bylaw #389 at www.lacombe.ca for more information.

Stories of Lacombe’s early Board of Trade The Lacombe community was incorporated as a town in 1902. Two years later the Territorial Government in Regina, responding to a petition from the Town, granted permission for incorporation of a Board of Trade.

The certificate of incorporation was presented to a citizen’s meeting on Nov. 23, 1904. An executive was appointed that evening and its first order of business was to direct executive members to pursue with the Territorial Government the issue of road improvement.

Two weeks later the minute book recorded the appointment of a committee to prepare a memorandum re-establishment of a Federal Experimental Farm at Lacombe.

It was this objective that had sparked interest in the formation of a Board of Trade, its promoters believing that a request from an official business organization would carry more weight with government than requests from individuals.

Lacombe was one of the first western Canadian communities to submit such a request to Ottawa.

That decision had consequences for the Lacombe community as attested by the current physical presence of the Lacombe Research Centre at the south boundary of the City.

FREDEEN this meeting were Senator Peter Talbot, member of Town council and MLA for the Lacombe constituency in 1905 Wm. Puffer and George Gladstone Hall Hutton. This was a new name in the community and the significance of his presence would not become clear until 1907.

That was the year the creation of the Lacombe Experimental Station received parliamentary approval and Hutton was confirmed as its first superintendent.

Federal legislation creating the Experimental Farms System had been enacted in 1886.

At that time five experimental farms were created at locations across Canada with the one in Ontario designated the Central Experimental Farm.

Provision was made for future expansion of the system but locations developed in subsequent years would be designated Experimental Stations not Farms.

The Lacombe Board memorandum was submitted December 1904 to the Hon. Sydney A. Fisher, minister of agriculture. It

concluded with the recommendation that the Hiram Flewelling farm bordering the southern boundary of the town be purchased for this purpose, an improved quarter section priced at $50 per acre.

Ottawa demurred. The government would not pay for land.

The minister said if the board was serious it should buy the land and gift it to the government.

Board members offered to donate half the purchase cost but the minister did not change his tune – it had to be all or nothing. Even Hon A. C. Rutherford Premier of the newly created Province of Alberta and Sir Wilfred Laurier, prime minister of Canada got into the act.

But the issue remained high-centered until February 1907 when the federal minister of agriculture advised the member of parliament from Central Alberta that he would authorize purchase to a limit of $5,000.

Within five days that MP was able to respond that Puffer had arranged the balance and the deal received cabinet approval Feb. 25, 1907.

With that approval came confirmation of Hutton as superintendent. Subsequent events would prove the wisdom of that choice.

The land cost $8,000 the government

paid $5,000 with the balance contributed by substantial donations from Talbot, Puffer, and Hutton augmented by donations of $50-$100 from other members of the community.

Thus was born the centre, which from its inception would play a role in the development of agricultural practices in the prairie provinces and beyond.

From the outset its contributions in animal agriculture have been particularly impressive.

The Lacombe Board of Trade played a dominant leadership role during the formative years of the community. It stimulated the development of the water pipeline from Barnett Lake.

It enticed the Danner Flour Milling Company of Missouri to relocate to Lacombe.

It gave impetus to development of the facilities for brick manufacturing and promoted product sales to both local and provincial government contractors.

It promoted development of the Blindman River hydroelectric plant and its members were investors and promoters of the Blindman Valley electric railway intended to service Rimbey and beyond.

But without doubt its crowning achievement resulted from the 1904 memorandum it prepared re establishment of a Federal Experimental Farm at Lacombe.

Red Deer Chiefs slammed by Lacoka Locos

On May 15, the Lacoka Bantam Locos defeated the Red Deer Chiefs in a 24-1 blowout game.

Locos Coach Cam Green said that he is proud of his team and added his players have been improving every game.

“They come out here and they give it all they’ve got,” said Green. “These kids are amazing.”

Lacoka wasted no time in putting the pressure on the Chiefs, opening the scoring in the first minute of play. After that, the Locos continued to build momentum and rack up points while the Chiefs struggled to gain a foothold.

Lacoka did not let up at all as the game progressed. Continuing to pressure Red

Deer into making turnovers, they capitalized on the Chiefs’ mistakes by turning them into goal-scoring plays.

Exploiting opponents’ mistakes is something the Locos are particularly good at, said Green.

“They seem to be able to see what the other teams weaknesses are,” said Green.

“To me, it’s their ability to read the other team that allows them to capitalize on our strengths and their weaknesses.”

Speed was another deciding factor in the game. Lacoka utilized a fast breakout to make it into Red Deer territory before there was any defense to oppose them, allowing the Locos to take their time setting up plays.

In the second period, Lacoka really turned up the heat, scoring nine times.

The onslaught of goals left Red Deer goaltender Cade Joslin shaken and as the score gap increased, Joslin’s net-minding

was affected inversely.

By the third, the game was all but decided but the Chiefs weren’t about to stop playing. Instead, Red Deer kicked their game up a gear, began fighting harder for the ball and played a more physical game.

However, Lacoka still had too much of a foothold on the game with a strong lead.

The Locos also continued to dictate the style of pay, still managing to score eight goals.

Thursdays blowout game could be attributed to the Locos’ consistency, something Green said the coaching staff has stressed all season.

“It’s not about running up the score like that. We just played our same game all the way through.”

“To me, that’s the way lacrosse is meant to be played, the way they are doing it.”

On the other hand, no team is ever perfect. Green said that defense, particularly in high-scoring games, is something Lacoka has to work on.

“They get excited and kind of forget that we have a goalie and defense,” said Green.

Now halfway through the season, Green said that Lacoka has been dominant in the league so far. He added that blowout games such as this one have not been uncommon for the team.

Movement to bring AJHL to Lacombe on hold More community ice space is needed to help make initiative possible

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe needs another ice surface.

That from Sandy Douglas, a Lacombe local who has been spearheading a motion to bring an Alberta Junior Hockey League team to Lacombe.

At a meeting last week to discuss the possibility of such a new team, it became apparent that before Lacombe can have another hockey team in another league, another ice surface must be made available first.

“What this morphed into is not a discussion of junior hockey but a discussion of (getting another ice surface),” said Douglas.

Currently, there are three main user groups (Lacombe Minor Hockey, Lacombe Ringette and Lacombe Figure Skating) competing for ice time in Lacombe. Douglas said that if there was an AJHL team to come to Lacombe now, it wouldn’t get the support it needs to be successful as it would just be seen as adding to the already stiff competition for ice time.

“I still want the Junior A team to happen, but before that can happen, we need more ice,” said Douglas.

He went on to say he foresaw the possibility that more ice might be needed before Lacombe could accommodate another an AJHL team.

He added that 30 years ago, he was very involved in Lacombe Minor Hockey and served as ice coordinator for the organization. He said that even then, ice time was tight.

“I’ve known we were short of ice for years,” said Douglas.

In the last few decades the problem has only gotten worse, said Douglas. He added it is not the fault of the City or council or the user groups, but it is still a problem that needs to be corrected.

Now, what he hopes to do is use the interest around bringing a junior hockey team to Lacombe to get Lacombe council to change its priorities and work toward getting at least one more ice surface for Lacombe.

At this point, the most important thing to all the stakeholders who use Lacombe’s ice as well as anyone interested in obtaining an AJHL team is to work together to bring another ice surface to Lacombe, he said.

Another ice surface seems to a common goal that those stakeholders are interested in working towards.

Brent Talsma, president of Lacombe Minor Hockey, said that he likes the idea of Lacombe having an AJHL team but said the community is in need of another ice surface even without one.

“I’m all for bringing hockey here,” said Talsma. “But the problem is we don’t have enough ice to facilitate what we have, let along bring in another team.”

Talsma went on to say that Lacombe Minor Hockey had 20 teams last season and already has to utilize ice in Bentley and Clive to facilitate its teams.

If its growth continues, it will have to start tiering at younger levels and making cuts to teams to make ends meet, something Talsma has tried hard to prevent already.

“We’re stretched to the nth degree,” said Talsma.

“We don’t have enough ice time now. If we don’t address this now, there are going to be a whole lot of people in this town that aren’t going to be able to play hockey.”

The situation is much the same for Lacombe Ringette.

Lori Winslow, president of Lacombe Ringette, said that Lacombe’s ringette teams currently have to double up on their practice times to serve all the teams.

“We would welcome more ice,” said Winslow. “We normally have two teams on the ice at the same time. We would definitely welcome an opportunity to have full-ice practices.”

Winslow added that she supports the idea of bringing the AJHL to Lacombe as long as another ice surface is secured first.

“I think it would be great for Lacombe, but I strongly agree that we don’t have the ice time to devote to an AJHL team at the moment,” said Winslow.

Jan Pocock, president of the Lacombe Figure Skating Club, said that her organization differs from other stakeholders in that consistency has allowed them to keep the same ice times for the last decade and they do not need to schedule additional ice time for games like ringette and hockey teams.

She said while this means Lacombe Figure Skating does not have as many complications in acquiring enough ice time, another ice surface would certainly be appreciated.

“I’m not going to say we can never use more,” said Pocock. She added that she thinks that sports in general are a positive thing for Lacombe so she would support a movement to bring another ice surface to the community.

“I think that minor sport is important to a community and however we can support it is valuable,” said Pocock.

“I don’t care what colour the skates are, if they are white or black, as long as children are being active.”

Talsma and Winslow also expressed their desire to work together with other stakeholders in bringing more ice to the community.

Recently, Lacombe council approved a plan in principle to make upgrades to the existing dressing rooms at the existing arena in Lacombe.

Douglas said those efforts should be applauded because the upgrades are badly needed, but said it still doesn’t address the need for more ice in Lacombe.

However, Douglas also said he does not know where the funding would come from for a new ice surface.

The dressing room upgrades are still needed and even if the money for upgrades at the current arena were put towards a new surface instead, more funds would still be needed.

Hall of Fame induction Former Lacombe resident Trisha Lorenz was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) at a ceremony held in Edmonton on May 10th.

The induction ceremony was held in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association.

The first-ever inductee group consisted of a total of 50 athletes, coaches and builders who were recognized for their significant achievements or contributions at various stages of the ACAC’s first 50 years of operation.

Lorenz captured the true essence of excellence as a student athlete as she succeeded on the court and in her studies at Augustana University College in Camrose.

Lorenz combined the athletic accomplishments of three consecutive ACAC All-Conference Team Awards (1989-92), two Canadian Colleges Athletic Association All-Canadian Team Awards (1989-90, 1991-92) and two ACAC regular season scoring titles (20.9 ppg in 1990-91; 16.9 ppg in 1991-92) with an

undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree which she earned with Great Distinction since she maintained an honour’s standing for all three years (1989-1992).

Her well-earned reputation as a hard worker saw Lorenz seek out individual extra practice sessions to enhance her skills in order to help her team when she was needed most.

After graduation from Augustana she moved on to play two years at the University of Lethbridge and then embarked upon a coaching career back at Augustana University College from 1994-99 where she moved from assistant to head coach. Lorenz earned a Bachelor of Education Degree at the University of Lethbridge and followed up with a Master of Physical Education Degree at the University of Alberta.

She graduated from Lacombe Composite High School in 1989.

Lorenz and her husband Don reside in Raymond, Alberta where they are raising a family of three boys.

Her parents, Rosemary and Lyle Lorenz, currently reside in Lacombe.

ARTS & LEISURE Scott Woods Band stirs up rich musical memories

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Fans of old-time fiddling music won’t want to miss the exemplary skills of Canadian award-winning fiddler Scott Woods.

He and his band bring the ‘Old Time Jubilee’ to the Sunnybrook United Church in Red Deer on May 29th. Proceeds from the show will help support youth programs at Kasota East Camp. Showtime is 7 p.m.

Woods and company will deliver an authentic live tribute to Don Messer’s Jubilee - one of the most popular TV shows in Canadian history that wrapped production back in 1969.

The concert also reunites Cape Breton tenor Tommy Leadbeater (as Charlie Chamberlain) with Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion Woods (as Don Messer) and features the vocals of Lynda Lewis (as Marg Osborne) in a masterful performance honouring the days when Messer and his Islanders ruled the airwaves.

Woods was part of a Messer tribute show for several years some time ago before heading out and developing his own productions. But the lure of Messer’s magic was never far from mind.

“It’s 45 years since Don Messer’s Jubilee was cancelled on CBC back in 1969,” explains Woods during a recent chat. “Ever since 2005, since I started doing my own shows across the country, people have said to me why don’t you and Tommy get together another Don Messer tribute?

“So we decided that this year we would try and do something to, first of all, commemorate the people that do remember Don Messer’s Jubilee and rekindle those fine memories of a simpler time in life when families would gather around the old television set, tune in and listen to their favourite fiddlers.”

Woods, having been born in 1970, of course didn’t experience the tunes of Messer firsthand, but it’s a tradition he has grown passionate about sharing over the years.

“We try and introduce people to what was a huge phenomenon in our Canadian history and cultural heritage. Don Messer’s Jubilee, for 10 years on CBC, had one of the highest ratings in the history of Canadian broadcasting. And in 1964, the show actually had higher ratings than Hockey Night In Canada.

“It’s important for the people who don’t know that name for us to help keep that

music alive and introduce it to the younger folks.”

The show delights audiences of all ages with old-time fiddle music, sensational step dancing, trick fiddling, lots of humor and more. Woods’ connection to the legacy of Messer runs deep.

“I have had the opportunity to meet and even play with some of the original members of Don Messer’s Jubilee. Don Tremaine was the host on CBC television.

I worked with Mr. Tremaine on a touring theatre production called Memories of Don Messer’s Jubilee in 1998. During that tour, I also performed with Vic Mullen, five-string banjo player from the original show.

“Fiddler Graham Townsend was also part of that presentation.”

Often, folks will approach him after a show and explain that although they weren’t specific fans of the genre growing up, they treasure memories connected to the music. And over the years, they’ve become fans themselves.

“Fond memories can be triggered once they hear the tunes,” he explains. “That’s the best compliment I could ever get – someone who isn’t a fiddle fan or a Don Messer fan – to say ‘Wow, I loved it’. It’s happy, fun music. No one can be depressed and listen to a fiddle tune.”

Meanwhile, Woods is a mesmerizing genius when it comes to offering up all kinds of fiddling styles, and he’s garnered loads of awards to prove it.

He had an early start delving into music beginning his studies in classical violin at age four. The training has been critical to his development as an artist, but he always had a penchant for the old-time styles that were so familiar to him growing up.

During his high school years, he’d practice six or seven hours a day. Then his postsecondary studies took him in a different direction – business and marketing. He’s grateful for those skills as they’re such a help with his career, but music is and has always been at the forefront.

And he’s a blast to watch on stage – this guy can turn somersaults and step dance while playing the fiddle.

He also plays lots of other instruments, but the fiddle remains his favourite no matter what particular genre he’s studying -- classical, jazz, big band, country, swing, Celtic, or old time music.

“We play for such great people. Whether it’s a church, a service club or a charity that is raising money for the community, they are excited that you are coming and they bend over backwards for you,” he says.

“We have so much fun, and it’s just like

family. And we are playing music that I totally understand and that I’m completely passionate about. That’s what keeps my energy up, and the band is the same way – they love the music, and they all grew up listening to it.”

Brine for the best BBQ

Although men have been assigned the stereotype of working the backyard BBQ, it is a joy that is shared by all home culinary enthusiasts. It’s a summertime passion. The smoky essence of smoldering charcoal starts my mouth watering as my mind conjures up recollections of flame-licked meats and fire caramelized vegetables.

With a few basic tips, you can overcome any barbequing intimidation you may have.

Overcooking lean meats is the most common mistake made, as people want to ensure that meat is fully cooked before serving.

Although it is imperative for poultry and ground meats to be fully cooked, this does not give you the right to transform them into dry charred remains.

Brining can help protect light-meat poultry and lean pork. This is a technique that involves soaking in a salt-water solution for a period of time prior to cooking. Not only does this add moisture to the centre

DEZ of the meat, but also seasoning, as the salt saturated water is drawn in. A simple brining formula would be one-quarter cup table salt dissolved in four cups of water for pieces of poultry or lean pork. Let the meat sit in the brine for at least one hour in the refrigerator. Remove from the brine, pat them dry and cook as you normally would.

This brining process will provide a moisture protection shield to help keep fully cooked meats juicy. However, this is only a safeguard - overcooking is still possible, but this lessens the chance. The only other consideration you may need to give your recipe is the amount of seasoning. The meat will already be seasoned somewhat from the salt in the brine, so back off on the saltshaker.

Try this technique the next time you are barbequing chicken breasts, pork chops, pork tenderloins or pork loins.

The salt used can be any salt - Kosher, Sea, etc. - the important aspect is to ensure that the granules are the same size as table salt. A coarser grind will result in less salt per equal measure as more air trapped between the larger particles.

It is important to mention that this is the simplest form of brine - water and salt.

There are many more complex recipes available on the Internet that will bring flavour and moisture, but this easy brine is a straightforward starting point.

Another essential pointer to bring up is that red meats are typically not brined; marinating is better for red meats, but that’s slated for another column topic.

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Organizers with the Central Music Festival are holding an appreciation day on May 24th, which will also feature tunes by the Ron Hubbard Band.

The event runs at the Elks Club in Red Deer, beginning with a public meeting from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The meeting is open to anyone who loves music and would like to see the Central Music Festival return next summer.

The party kicks off with doors opening at 7 p.m. followed by the performance at 8 p.m. It’s open to volunteers, sponsors and anyone who supports the Central Music Festival, said Mike Bradford, president of the Central Music Festival Society.

“We’ve been taking a look at things since we cancelled the Festival and have identified three areas which are key for us to putting on a good event in 2015 – fundraising, marketing and volunteer recruitment retention,” he said. Committees have subsequently been

formed to work on those issues, he added.

Bradford said the organizing team has, over the years, done everything they can to make the Festival cost-effective, but it’s been a constant struggle.

He added they are also in the process of putting together an operating budget for the next couple of years, and for the 2015 Festival in particular.

“But we have to get more people excited about this so we get larger crowds out there. We’ve always gotten positive feedback from the attendees and the performers that it’s a well-run Festival and a great venue.

“So we have to figure out what we need to do to attract more people there. Whether that involves looking at different acts, or different ways of doing things we are open to that.”

Meanwhile, there is no charge to attend the event this Saturday, which will also include door prizes.

The romance of these homes lies in their mystery, the decades of living that has gone on in them. Was the home once a place for recovering soldiers to convalesce?

Did it hold grand tea parties or garden soirees with ladies wearing wide hats and white gloves? Or could it have possibly been a place where mysterious and spooky happenings caused things to go bump in the night?

Whatever the reason, there is a wonderful shroud of mystery in these centurion beauties.

I encourage you to take a tour, it might seem weird but when I owned one of these majestic homes in Lacombe, people would come to my door and ask if they could see inside.

It seems a brazen thing to do and it was mostly by brave parents trick or treating with their children but still - what fun! I

couldn’t help beaming with pride knowing that my neighbours were curious about my home and its history.

I guarantee you that most people who own these types of abodes would be eager to show them off.

Heritage homes have so much story and most homeowners are well-versed in the history of their particular home. Knocking on a neighbour’s door with freshly baked strawberry muffins doesn’t hurt either.

If you are fortunate to live in a heritage home then do your homework and learn the history and the architecture behind your home.

Research the colours of the period and go wild with a new, boundary breaking inspirational palette! Floral wallpaper with floral sofas? Oh definitely! One of the wonderful things about these homes with their soaring ceilings and detailed moulding is that you can be very expressive in your decorating. You do not get this kind

of license with more modern or traditional homes.

It is not unusual to see heritage homes with bold colours on wood trim, cabinets and even stair spindles or window sashes.

Somehow the nature of the home begs for colour and out of the box pattern combinations.

It makes more sense to paint a 14” wood baseboard yellow than it does to slap that kind of colour on a standard 2-3” base trim, it would look like someone ran around the base of your room with a highlighter.

My personal favorite is the stone bungalow with the rounded front porch on Main St. I once helped a client who used to own it, they had lovely charcoal drawings of that home but I have never had the opportunity to peer inside the doors; maybe I need to get some muffins and head out to Lacombe!
