Kimberley receives cash for local tourism Submitted
Unprecedented Savings Only at Fitz Flooring
The Government of British Columbia is growing tourism economies by providing $10.5 million this year to 14 resort municipalities throughout the province. Kimberley is receiving $61,955 to support local tourism. The Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) supports the BC Jobs Plan and Gaining the Edge: BC’s Tourism Strategy by helping small resort-based municipalities address the unique challenges they face as seasonally dependent economies to grow their tourism offerings. The City of Kimberley has received $682,342
since qualifying for funding in 2007, and will use the most recent instalment for planned activities including mountain bike trails and a winter ski shuttle. “As a member of the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI), the City of Kimberley is pleased to have the support of the Province in expanding our impressive tourism attractions. We hope the improved services will attract more mountain bikers and skiers to support Kimberley’s tourist economy,” said Ron McRae, Mayor, City of Kimberley Kimberley has focused its RMI spending on enhancing its year round nature-
based tourism products and supporting its vibrant arts and culture scene. With improvements to the Sullivan Mine Interpretive Train Tracks, the ski village and downtown areas are now connected through a direct rail access line. Development of new bike trails and a skills area have diversified the tourism offerings in the community year-round. Since 2006, over $87.6 million has been invested in tourism infrastructure and programs to support local and regional tourism economies in the 14 communities. Participating municipalities undertake programs or projects which will encourage visitors to stay longer and visit more often. Projects range from building pedestrian and mountain biking trails, boat launches, and beach improvements to holding festivals and events. Municipalities participating in the RMI program are Fernie, Golden, Harrison Hot Springs, Invermere, Kimberley, Osoyoos, Radium Hot Springs, Revelstoke, Rossland, Sun Peaks, Tofino, Ucluelet, Valemount and Whistler.

OUTER SPACE Creating an outdoor oasis Make Way for the Mighty Veggies! When a plant is called a Mighty Veggie, you know it is way more than just an ordinary vegetable. The revolutionary thing about Mighty Veggies is that they are grafted vegetables. This means growers have taken the root stock from one plant and attached the top part, also known as scion, of another plant right to it. As the tissue in the graft area heals, the plants fuse together, giving it the disease resistance of the rootstock and the fruit quality of the scion. Grafting makes stronger, more vigorous plants and bigger, longer harvests. It also ensures the plants have an improved ability to withstand temperature extremes and it boosts their defenses against soil-borne diseases and pests. An important step when planting grafted vegetables is to keep the graft, the area
where the rootstock and scion are joined, above the soil line. The first plants in the series of vegetable superheros were the Mighty Matos. They have been around for a few seasons now and have taken the gardening world by storm. There are many Might Matos to choose from, from traditional favourites such as ‘Beefsteak’ and ‘Early Girl’ to new hybrid varieties such as ‘Indigo Apple’ and ‘Bumblebee Sunrise’. New additions to the line-up this year are the Mighty Veggies ‘Epic Eggplant’ and ‘Coolcumber’. Base for ‘Epic Eggplant’ is a diseaseresistant rootstock and grafted onto it is a ‘Dusky Eggplant’ scion that produces purple-black, oval fruit that can grow up to ten inches long. ‘Coolcumber’ is an extremely high yielding plant. The
crisp, sweet and spineless mini cucumbers are medium green and grow three to four inches long. The plants are very vig-
orous and suitable for hot weather. They also have a good resistance to powdery mildew which can be an issue with cu-
cumbers. There are also two Mighty Melons available this year ‘Watermelon’ and ‘Cantaloupe’.
Comparing a regular (left) to a grafted tomato plant (right) of the same variety. Benefits of grafting vegetables can include higher yields as well as stronger plants with better resistance to pests and diseases and the improved ability to withstand temperature extremes.

Sweet potatoes are one of those vegetables that have been becoming more and more popular over the last few years. Once a unique side dish, sweet potato fries now are almost as widely available as their regular cousins. Their popularity might partially be due to the fact that they are considered a vegetable, rather than a starch by many weight-loss programs and are generally thought to be healthier than regular potatoes. The scientific community has not come to a final conclusion on that question, however, it is a fact that sweet potatoes are loaded with antioxidants, beta-carotene, Vitamin C and many other nutrients. Most importantly, they are delicious There are several different varieties of sweet potatoes available for local gardeners: Beaure-

Fee break possible for small scale miners by Tom Fletcher
Photo WikiPedia
A 19th Century placer miner uses a rocker box to search for gold. Placer mining has become mechanized and remains an active industry in B.C.
The B.C. government has heard the protests and is re-thinking its plan to impose new fees on placer mining operations, Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett says. In an interview to mark Mining Week in B.C., Bennett said he has heard the criticism from the mining industry about introducing permit fees under the Mines Act that could apply to all mining activities, includ-

Larger placer mines can expect to pay for licensing and regulato-
ry costs of their industry, as forest and other industries do on Crown land, Bennett said. When the fees were proposed in February, the industry response was swift and negative from the industry. NDP mines critic Scott Fraser said he was getting letters as soon as the legislation was presented, and small operators were the most worried. “They’ll get hit by this, and according to them, they’ll be pushed right off their claims,” Fraser said. The larger picture of B.C. mining remains bright, Bennett said. Red Chris copper and
Horoscope for the Week: May 16, 2014 Contact Michael O’Connor for a Personal Reading • 888.352.2936 sunstarastrology@gmail.com • www.sunstarastrology.com Tip of the Week: As Taurus time yields to Gemini this week, in the wake of the Scorpio Full Moon, this time merits some extra attention. The Solar Eclipse in late April planted some potent seeds. Not everyone has the soil destined to produce the abundance it implies, yet everyone is feeling the impact somehow. The steadily escalating gas prices are one of the more obvious synchronistic casualties with the greater collective bearing the brunt. That the Moon was in close proximity to Saturn is yet another reflection of this additional fiscal weight and restriction. Venus in Aries, not its bet placement, in close alignment with Uranus suggests that this rather sudden hike is also synchronizing with a general state of stress, dissatisfaction and even rebellion. When such a fundamental commodity that affects so many people and commerce in general, it is bound to produce shock waves rumbling in every direction. In other words inflation across the notion is the obvious consequence. Other factors in the planetary portrait indicate that the real reaction will be delayed, but it will come. It will likely take until about mid-June before the collective discontent rises and it will escalate through July and peak in August. When private interests disrupt the general economy, anger, distrust and cynicism are common reactions. The Gemini factor which has already begun and will continue throughout June will at least produce a lot of chatter on the airwaves and of course in the media, social and otherwise. So, the bull has been released from its pen and this one is a prize stock sample. How will the conquistador assert to prevail and overcome? This is one creature that will prove very difficult to defeat. Conflict is woven into the game of life but some opponents are much bigger and stronger than others. It seems quite appropriate that the new and bigger than even representation of Godzilla and with a unique twist (Venus conjunct Uranus) in that it is pitted with humanity against a common enemy – greed, arrogance and corruption, is slated to be released right at the time of the Scorpio Full Moon born of the Solar Eclipse which occurred on the heels of the first of 4 Lunar Eclipses or what have come to be called by some as the ‘blood moon tetrad’. Yes, signs of the times. Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20) A process of building upon new foundations continues. This focus directly includes creating a new state and quality of harmony in your relationship life. Equality is a key word. The challenge includes innovative thoughts, attitudes and action. In other words, your ability to break with habitual modes of engaging with others implies new psychological territory. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) Perpetuating a momentum that you have been creating over the past couple of years or so is a central theme. Accessing with constitutes your authentic self is featured. What do you really think and feel deep down? Accessing this core level of motivation is a key to your outer success. This will facilitate and clarify effective communications. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) Focusing your efforts close to home, or behind the scenes, remains important. In some way this constitutes inner work. Yet, with the Sun about to enter your sign, you will feel the impulse to take new leads soon. Already you are thinking and perhaps talking about it. This is all part of a process of preparing for new modes of expression or your next big th ing. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) The foundations of new friendships and other alliances have begun. Yet these have and continue to include a break with old patterns. Some sort of renovation process is implied. It could be in your home but it may be in your perspectives and approach. Combine your talents and resources with those of others for best results. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) A series of unexpected twists and turns in your public and professional life are challenging you to remain open and flexible. Fortunately, your energy and enthusiasm levels stand to be riding high. Still, you may feel the need to access your hidden reserves of faith. Perpetuating open lines of communication with family, friends and business contacts is a key to peace of mind. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) People and circumstances are pushing you to see both a bigger and deeper picture. Things may simply not be as straightforward as you would like. This is a call to adapt and this trend will continue. Exchanges of ideas and key communications especially linked to your career and professional life are important.
Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) Getting clear somehow continues. This could include clearing debts, or clearing closets or getting clear regarding answers you are seeking. Either way, you are pushing for results. Contending with a few curve balls on relationship fronts has and continues to pose challenges as well. This is one of those times for a philosophical perspective. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) Who has what you want and need? A steady flow of change in your daily rhythm finds you seeking allies. Breaking through inner and outer blocks and obstacles is a core motivation. The real answers and solutions you seek to current circumstances could take several weeks to resolve. This is a call for some serious thinking and strategies. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) Creating a healthier overall flow continues. Entertaining alternative angles and approaches will prove inspiring. Already you are engaging in active communications leading to new deals and collaborations. It is quite possible that dreams are being realized. Your sights are set on the future and the time is right to adjust to a new norm. Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) Your creative juices have been flowing steadily over the past few weeks. These are inspiring you to make innovative changes close to home. Yet your real assertions remain prominent in your career, so each is significantly influencing the other. Casting a critical eye on people feels necessary in order to make some needed improvements. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) Your focus on home and family remains strong. Yet your path is hardly straight and narrow. Circumstances have and continue to produce unexpected turns and surprises. You yearn to break free from the grip of this uncertain cycle. You should see a shift this week. This shift will support more active communications and inspire imaginative ideas. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) A whole host of plans, dreams and schemes are running through you mind. You are determined to activate changes that will produce more satisfying returns. Although you have likely been working diligently to this end, your resolve to work even harder is on the rise. Brainstorm for innovative ideas and modes of approach for best results.
gold mine is set to open this summer with the completion of a new electrical transmission line to northwestern B.C. Copper Mountain near Princeton and Mount Milligan north of Prince George are up and producing metal ore, adding to mine activity that has tripled in terms of value to the economy since 2001. Slumping prices for
metallurgical coal have reversed some of the recent growth in coal production, with closures announced at two coal mines in the Tumbler Ridge region. Teck Resources has also delayed its plan to reopen Quintette Coal, which it opened as one of the first Tumbler Ridge mines in 1982 and closed in 2000 due to low coal prices. Bennett said the met-
allurgical coal market is subject to cycles that are closely tied to Asian demand for steel, and the long-term trend continues to be strong. B.C. and Australia are the world’s leading sources of high-grade metallurgical coal.

Farmland holy war falls flat B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher The NDP’s holy war against changes to the Agricultural Land Reserve got nastier last week, as it became clear it was defenders of the status quo who were being mowed down. Ever since legislation was tabled to divide the ALR into two zones, with greater emphasis on social and economic needs to help viability of farms in the Kootenay, Interior and North regions, almost all the protest has been from unaffected areas. And much of it depends on emotion rather than fact. In the legislature, Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog rose to praise the late Dave Stupich, who birthed the ALR sacred cow as agriculture minister in 1973. Krog likened Stupich to the Biblical Daniel for his bravery in preserving farmland for our children’s children. Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley did his signature “jiggery pokery” routine, this time accusing cabinet minister Bill Bennett of being “giddy” at the prospect of paying off his friends with development land. Before he gets too jiggery outside the protection of the legislative chamber, he would be well advised to find some evidence. Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson, who at least represents an area being given broader latitude for secondary uses on farmland, warned of drought in California. The history of this is currently a hot topic in the quasi-religious climate

change debate. Meanwhile in the real British Columbia, life and farming go on under the existing farmland protection regime. The largest ALR exclusion in B.C. history took a big step forward last week, as a federal-provincial review panel issued its report on the Site C dam proposed for the Peace River. The panel noted that the dam would flood 2,775 hectares of farmland, representing all seven categories of soil quality. Opponents use a figure about twice that size, as if all the affected land was farmable. The panel accepted that this land, including the small amount of micro-climate bottom land, represents 0.2% of the Peace region’s farm receipts. I would add that’s because what is farmed at all is mostly growing hay, which requires minimum capital and labour. “It has potential, to be sure, but its unique and irreplaceable contribution would be for those labour-intensive crops like vegetables, which are not remotely practical in a labourshort region,” the report states. We have to bring in Mexican guest workers to get vegetable and fruit crops off in the Fraser Valley and Okanagan. For a fivemonth growing season in the bush outside Fort St. John? This is a classic example of the religious fervor that replaces reason among the southern faithful of the ALR. And how is the status quo working? Summerland council

just voted to swap 80 hectares of flat farmland for 90 hectares further away in the Summerland Hills. The town is on restricted lakeshore terrain and the council wants to increase its urban zone, using the community need provisions that are enhanced by the current legislative amendments. This was after a loud demonstration organized with the help of a fake grassroots protest machine called LeadNow, complete with slick signs and website. (LeadNow also helped round up anti-pipeline protesters this past weekend.) The media were fooled as usual, but not Summerland council. LeadNow has moved on to lining up people to flood the Agricultural Land Commission with form letters and petitions against Summerland’s plan. The B.C. Agriculture Council, whose board first supported and then objected to the ALR amendments, has clarified its objections. It wants flexibility for secondary uses extended to the prime farmland zones of the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and southern Vancouver Island.

Invasive Plant Council gets new funding Submitted The provincial government is providing $213,300 to the East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council and the Regional District of East Kootenay to help control the spread of invasive plants. “The ongoing battle against invasive plants is something I am personally committed to,” said East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett. “This funding helps in the fight to keep our beautiful province beautiful.” The funding will be invested in activities such as raising public awareness of invasive plants, surveying invasive plant populations and actively treating high-priority sites to control their spread. The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council will receive $190,000 and the Regional District of East Kootenay will receive $23,000. “The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council would not be in operation without major funding from provincial ministries. EKIPC would like to acknowledge the long-standing partnership with our local MLA, Bill Bennett, who has made a significant contribution in the East Kootenay regarding invasive species management,” said Todd Larsen, Program Manager of the Kootenay Invasive Plant Council. “Thanks to Mr. Bennett’s dedication, provincial funds allocated to EKIPC in 2014 will be received at an earlier date for more timely treatments. This support allows EKIPC to raise public awareness, coordinate with other organizations, and run operational programs in order to mitigate the impacts of invasive species in the region.” Invasive plants are species that have been introduced into B.C. from other areas. They displace our native vegetation and can cause considerable economic and environmental damage, and some pose a health risk to people. Invasive plants may disrupt natural ecosystems, reduce biodiversity, increase soil erosion, alter soil chemistry and adversely affect commercial crops. The grants to East Kootenay Invasive
Plant Council and the Regional District of

species have been found and responds rapidly to contain and eradicate them before they become established and start spreading.

Gregarious Gardener
10 Neat Things by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet
Vegetable Gardening
1. Settling Down. Gardening started about 10,000 years ago, when nomadic hunter-gatherers realized they could save some time and effort by planting seeds and growing plants closer to their settlements. Even early on, produce was not only grown for immediate consumption, but gardeners already practiced selective breeding to improve harvests, get larger fruit or vegetables with better storage. 2. American Basics. First Nations groups in North America cultivated three main types of produce: corn, beans and squash. European settlers brought seeds from their home countries and expanded the selection. For both groups, however, vegetable gardening was a necessity for survival and it was not until the 1900s that more and more ornamental elements entered the gardens. 3. Digging for Victory. During the First and Second World Wars, governments in Canada, the US and United Kingdom encouraged citizens to plant vegetable gardens on private lands and in public gardens. They were meant to prevent a food shortage, both at home and for soldiers overseas, as well as free up resources, such as trains and trucks for the war effort. Participation was huge with an estimated 60% of Canadians coast-to-coast creating gardens. 4. Planting Revival. Gardening in public spaces has once again seen an increase in the last few years with public and community gardens popping up across the country, in rural areas as well as large cities. In the Kootenays, most communities have a public garden or some sort of planting project. Even the US president and his family are supporting the message of growing your own produce with the creation of a large vegetable garden at the White House. 5. Getting Started. If you have never grown your own vegetables, starting a garden might seem intimidating, but with a bit of preparation, gardening can become a most successful and satisfying pastime. First, think about what type of garden you would like to create. Are you looking for a food forest, a traditional, in-ground kitchen garden or do you want the comfort of raised beds? Do you live in an apartment with limited outdoor space - container gardening will allow you to grow vegetables and small fruit on a small patio or balcony or even a sunny windowsill. 6. Form and Function. Once you have decided what type of garden you want to grow, you have to decide on the type of plants to put in. Your choices are almost unlimited, so do some research and plan carefully. Remember that going shopping for plants without a garden plan is a bit like going grocery shopping without a list and on an empty stomach. When you are out gathering supplies, don’t forget about the basic garden tools you will need. 7. The Ground Beneath their Roots. As important as the type of plant you are growing is the soil you are growing them in. Poor-quality soil can seriously hurt a gardener's best efforts. Vegetables are looking for a soil that is free of stones and other debris, wellaerated and rich in organic matter. You also need to know the nutrient content and pH level of your soil. There are simple home-tests available in the garden centre that can give you a good idea of what you might need to add. 8. Making Healthy Choices. There are many reasons for wanting to grow your own vegetables and fruit. For many gardeners, health arguments are most important. Produce is never tastier than when it is picked fresh, straight from your own garden. Studies even show that kids who eat home-grown vegetables are more than twice as likely to get their recommended servings per day and like them more than kids who only get store-bought produce. 9. Eat Green to Save Green. As you start stocking your pantry with more and more home-grown food, your grocery bill will get smaller and smaller. If you learn to dry, can or otherwise preserve fresh produce, you will be able to feed yourself even long after the growing season is over. 10. Warm and Fuzzy Feeling. Beside the proven benefits of having home-grown produce, there are also some less measurable, but just as important factors. There is the sense of pride you feel when you see that little seedling turn into food on your table and the healthy, outdoor activity you get when tending to your plants. Gardening can also be a great project for the whole family to work and grow together.

Community Connections grows The Staff and Board of Directors for Community Connections Society of Southeast BC ( C o m m u n i t y Connections) is very excited to announce, ‘Here We Grow Again’, and let the community know that the existing Cranbrook Family Connections hub of services is moving and expanding. In 2007 Community Connections became the lead partner in establishing a hub of services to support individuals and families in Cranbrook and East Kootenay region. Cranbrook Family Connections has been a buzzing hub of services that has offered the following programs; Bellies to Babies Pregnancy Outreach Program, Options for Sexual Health, ANKORS AIDS Network Outreach and Support Society, Family Resource Programs, Community Action Program for Children, Nobody’s Perfect Parenting, and many more activities. On June 1, 2014, Cranbrook Family Connections is moving and expanding services to be offered. Once again Community Connections is the
lead partner and moving programs and services that are currently in three locations to a one-stop hub of service. Community Connections understands the value of this type of service to families and the community as a whole. The Kootenay Child Development Centre is a model of success for just this type of one-stop service. In the first year alone, consultations and referrals amongst service providers increased by over 100%. Families continue to give positive feedback to having early childhood services in one location with easy access. This model will be duplicated in the new Cranbrook Family Connections location. Services provided in this location will range from pre-natal to senior support. The following programs and services will co-locate and be available in the new hub to provide a comprehensive continuum of services in one easily accessible location: • Community C o n n e c t i o n s Administration Team • Cranbrook Women’s Resource Centre • Homeless Outreach Program •Traveling Poverty Law Advocate Program • Better @ Home

Hugs: A big hug to Russ Cross of Cranbrook. A gentleman fell while walking his dog, and injured himself. Mr. Cross took the gentleman to his home to secure his little dog, and then took the gentleman to the hospital for treatment. Thank you so much Mr. Cross for being a caring citizen of others. Hugs: To the Mount Baker Secondary School student who found $100 in cash on the floor in the school and turned it in to the office. The student who lost it was very grateful!! Hugs: To the Mount Baker student who found an iphone and turned it in to the office of the school. The girl who lost it was frantic and your honesty and good morals have made her very, very happy!! Thank you so much!!! Slugs: To the very inconsiderate person who seems to think other people’s garbage containers are there for their dog droppings! Maybe this person should use their own container or not own a pet! Hugs: Great big HUGS to all our loyal supporters for helping our family raise $6000 in support of this year’s Scotiabank MS Walk. Your generosity is so greatly appreciated in helping to make a difference to people living with multiple sclerosis, Karen Hummel & Ron McGregor & family Hugs: Thank you to Gramlick Construction (Terry Mauly) and crew for their hard work from the beginning of the project to the finish in a timely & friendly manner. Highly recommended! Hugs: Huge Hugs to the lady at Pinewood Elementary School that has taken on the Playground Project and is finally getting somewhere. All our kids will be so grateful! Thank you! Slugs: To the restaurant in Cranbrook that advertises All You Can Eat Prawns on their buffet but do not have prawns at all.
Hugs: From Grasmere to James at Armor Roofing, he came out within a day of my call for an assessment and came back right away and had my roof fixed within 2 days. Slugs to the 6 other roofing companies I called twice in a 2 week period that never even returned my call. Hugs: HUGE hugs to all involved with Blue Lake Center, past and present for such a beautiful facility. I was at the grand reopening and it was wonderful. For those who have not seen it check it out, you and your kids will love it. Well done. Slugs: To the person living in Kimberley, who has replaced the two red ends of the Canadian flag with rainbow colors! If I should decide to fly a Canadian flag in my yard and run the two end with swastikas, would that be acceptable? Nothing is acceptable defacing our flag. Get it down! Your other flags look great and I don’t see any rainbows on them. Please show OUR flag more respect. I am surprised some patriotic person has not destroyed it in the dark of the night! Hugs: To the people who volunteer for the hospital auxiliary. What a great service you do for our community. Thanks for working at the thrift store, great buys and super recycling; the store is organized and well managed. I am also so grateful for the volunteers at the hospital who direct us to where we need to go for our tests and procedures. This can be a scary time, and your kindness, your smiles, your welcoming presence makes the process so much easier. Thank you, I hope you know how much you are appreciated.
Send a hug to someone you love

McHappy Day raises more than $10,000 Submitted C r a n b r o o k McDonald’s Restaurant would like to thank the community in helping it raise $10,200 for the new Ronald McDonald House BC in Vancouver. The funds were raised by the local McDonald’s through its participation in the 21st McHappy Day, a national fundraiser held in more than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants across Canada. On May 7th, $1 from every Big Mac® sandwich, Happy Meal® and hot McCafé® beverage sold went to benefit local children’s charities across the country. In addition, the restaurant sold red “Ronald shoes” in the weeks leading up to McHappy Day to provide additional support. In Cranbrook, all funds raised were earmarked for Ronald McDonald House BC. “This year we once again decided to fundraise for the new Ronald McDonald House that is opening in Vancouver this July,” said Cranbrook & Fernie McDonald’s Owner/Operator David Kaiser. “The House is a home-away-from-home for children requiring medical treatment at BC Children’s Hospital, and for their families. The current Ronald McDonald House can only accommodate 13 families at a time. And yet they turn dozens

That is why this new House will be so amazing.” The new Ronald McDonald House will be approximately 75,000 square feet, which will make it the second largest House program in Canada, in an effort to meet the growing demand for family accommodation near BC Children’s Hospital. The estimated cost of construction is $27 million. “A new Ronald McDonald House is desperately needed here in BC, especially for families from our area whose kids are receiving treatment at the BC Children’s Hospital and they have no place to stay. Considering the high cost of construction for the new House,
we wanted to donate our McHappy Day earnings to the Ronald McDonald House BC,” said Cranbrook & Fernie McDonald’s Community Relations Representative Courtney Magro. As part of the McHappy Day celebrations, Cranbrook McDonald’s was thrilled to be joined by members of the Cranbrook Fire Department, Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill, members of the B104/The Drive radio station and volunteers from local service clubs as they rolled up their sleeves to work behind the counter and in the lobby on McHappy Day. Melanie Caron, a local face painter, also donated her time and delighted kids with
her artistry. The Royal Stewart Highland Dancers held a special performance at the restaurant in honour of McHappy Day, as well. In the past year, M c D o n a l d ’ s Restaurants across Canada raised more than $9 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities through McHappy Day and its 10cent Happy Meal Program. May 7th, 2014, marked the 21st McHappy Day in McDonald’s Canada’s history. Since its inception in 1977, this celebration has raised more than $42 million for Canadian children.

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Janet Sarah Baker-Husdup announces that on the afternoon of May 5, 2014, from the comfort of her home, Janet’s spirit gracefully took flight to start a new journey amongst the stars after a brief but merciless battle with cancer. Janet, who resided in Kimberley, B.C., was born August 16, 1957 in Chawston, England to Alexander Baker (deceased) and to Joyce Baker of Aldergrove, B.C. She was a rare, gentle gem who touched the lives of many through her warm, caring, compassionate heart. She loved life and loved the beauty that earth had to offer.

A life lived is worth remembering. OBITUARY
Rudi Lauritzen 1949-2014 In Loving Memory of Rudi Lauritzen Rudi was tragically taken from us on May 7 in a motor vehicle accident. Rudi was born in Denmark on August 27, 1949 and immigrated to Canada at the age of 7 with his parents Armand and Jenny and brother John. They settled in the Deep Cove area of North Vancouver. In 1973 he met and married the love of his life Jamie Lynn Smith. Their first home was on the Sunshine Coast where they lived on a houseboat in Gibsons. Eventually, with their young family, they moved to Skookumchuck in the East Kootenays. Their home for the last twenty years has been at Riondel in the West Kootenays. Rudi was a talented "Mr. Fix-It" and through his company R&R Repair served a grateful community. His work ethic was matched only by his unfailing generosity. He leaves behind his grieving wife, eldest son Kalum (Mary) and grandchildren Silk, Sequoia; son Clayton and grandson Javin. Rudi will be sadly missed. Janet was a writer, an artist, an intellect, a teacher, an environmentalist, a culinary genius. She was a gift. She would go above and beyond to aide or comfort a friend or family member in need. Her heart was pure. She possessed a strength and courage that inspired many not only through her illness but through her life entirely. She was timid and shy yet bold and witty. She had a cheeky sense of humour and her laugh would brighten the darkest of days. She was clever and creative, a bundle of eclectic knowledge. Janet was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, partner and friend who will be forever in the hearts of the people who loved her. She is survived by Dean Boyles and will be lovingly cherished by her Mother; Joyce Baker, her three children; Jesse Husdup, Jennifer Husdup (Jonas), Cody Husdup (Brooke), her siblings; Geoff Baker (Vivian), Marilyn Kecskes, Diane George (Neil), Susan Baker (Rob), her many nieces and nephews, her close and loving friends, and her three grandchildren – her whole world – Jaden, Jasmine, and Ella. Janet’s cremation took place on Thursday, May 8, 2014. In keeping with Janet’s wishes, there will be no funeral. At her request, there will be a private ceremony held at a later date.
OBITUARY ZMURCHYK Edward Michael Zmurchyk passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the age of 60 years. Ed was born on January 19, 1954 in Fernie and spent the rest of his life in the Elk Valley. Ed was a family man who loved spending time with his children and grand children. He was a big kid at heart much like his brother John and all children enjoyed his company. He was compassionate, loving and accepting of everyone. Ed was naturally skilled in many areas, he was a talented electrician and worked at West Star from 1973 to the time it closed in 1991. When the mine closed he started his own very successful business, “Ed’s Electric” and after returning to work at Line Creek, kept his business running. He recently took time out of his busy work schedule to travel to Egypt and throughout Israel. Ed’ passion was his faith and he found a loving ministry to embrace, he was an active member in the New Life Foursquare Church in Cranbrook, BC, where he volunteered as an audio visual technician and enjoyed being a part of his church family. Another of Ed’s passions was basketball; he taught all his children how to play and play well and shared his knowledge with the children in the community as he refereed. Every basketball player knew that “Fast Eddie” was always there to answer their questions and on some occasions show them a move or two that could keep them out of foul trouble. Ed was loved by so many and was well known for his words of encouragement and a man who was always available to anyone who needed words of wisdom. He was often found looking for ways to be a blessing to anyone. Through the years Ed touched the hearts and lives of many people and committed his time to be a pillar in the community and has left everyone with fond memories that will last a lifetime. Ed will be sadly missed by his 5 children; Clay (Renee) Zmurchyk , Jeremy (Ashley), Nicole, Samuel and Christian Zmurchyk as well as grandchildren Dom, Morgan and Kai, Ainsley, his step children Desiree and Tasha Brown. His fiancé Catherine Guenther, siblings Pam (Rick) Rosner, Fred (Marlis) Zmurchyk, John (Sue) Zmurchyk and Diane (Joe) Warshawsky and their families are also left to mourn Ed’s passing. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Kate Zmurchyk and his sister Patricia. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, May 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM, at New Life Foursquare Church, 308 10th Avenue South in Cranbrook, BC, with Pastor Gordon Henry Officiating. Messages of condolence can be left for the family at www.cherishedmemoriesfs.com. Arrangements entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.
