Dream Lift Day Saving Holy Cross Church

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada- B.C. Interior Chapter is pleased to announce that “Wendy’s Dream Lift Day” will be held Wednesday, January 30th from 6:00 a.m. to closing. The gross proceeds from the day’s sales in the dining room and drive thru, as well as staff, management & owner’s wages will be earmarked for the next B.C. Interior “Dream Lift to Disneyland.” The Salmon Arm Wendy’s is among the nine local participating restaurants.

This year’s theme is ‘Refer a Child.’ Wendy’s wants everyone in the BC Interior to know how to refer a child who may be eligible for a Dream Lift to Disneyland. Whether you are a parent, guardian, doctor, health care professional, teacher, relative, friend or neighbour, there is a simple way to start the referral process. The Sunshine Foundation of Canada is an independent national charity working to make dreams come true for children aged 3–18 years that are challenged by severe physical disabilities or lifethreatening illnesses. The Foundation’s “Dreamlift to Disney” program enables a plane load of special children to fly to Disneyland to enjoy a magical day of fun in the sun.

On Wendy’s DreamLift Day, local celebrities and dignitaries will be on hand along with members from the RCMP; fire departments; BC Ambulance and other services; and local business members (including, in the Salmon Arm location, Lakeshore News staff), to help fill your orders.

As in past years, Wendy’s is hasting 5 Orange County (California) Sheriff’s Department members for the 2013 Wendy’s Dreamlift Day; Captain Tim Moy will be volunteering at the Salmon Arm location.

Volunteers of ‘Friends of the 1922 Notch Hill Church Society’ have begun the reconstruction of the Roman Catholic Holy Cross Church.

When they began the project, the building was in a state of near collapse from severe damage to the east side of the roof and wall and weather damage. The building has been abandoned since the early 1970’s.

The objective is to reconstruct it architecturally as it was first built. In order to achieve this goal, what the Society needs desperately are copies of any photographs of the early days

of the church. We are asking anyone who may have had a connection with this church during the years throughout the ‘30s, ‘40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s for photos that show the church in its prime. The photos will be copied and returned to the owners. These will help the Society achieve preservation of this historic building.

Volunteers needed to read Literacy at the Mall

with their reading. The commitment is 1.5 hours per week from mid-February until mid-May. During that time, you will read with 3 children for 30 minutes each. The children are in grades 2 to 5 and are selected by their teachers to receive this special reading help. All tutoring is done at the school during regular school hours.

A three hour training session for all volunteers in basic reading strategies is mandatory as well as a criminal record check.

Volunteers can choose one of the following training sessions to attend: Tuesday, February 5th, 9:00 a.m.– 12:00 noon at MV Beattie Elementary (Enderby); and Thursday, February 7th, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 noon at Hillcrest Elementary (Salmon Arm).

If you love to read and are interested in working with children, consider becoming a volunteer with the One to One Children’s Literacy Program. Unplug & Play Family Literacy Week

The Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS) and many community organizations are inviting students and families to participate in Unplug & Play Family Literacy Week from January 21st to 27th. Children use an average of 7.5 hours of entertainment technology per day. In order to encourage students and families to reduce their amount of screen-time for one week (TV, video games, texting, computers, etc.) Unplug & Play Passports have been printed for every elementary and middle school student in the district. On each passport, there is a daily checklist to record

screen-free activities and a schedule of events for families throughout the North Okanagan-Shuswap. All events are free and some of the planned activities include: buddy reading with the SilverBacks, family game nights, Early Years Fair, family skating, special library storytimes, library scavenger hunt, sliding party, family art afternoon, Jam the GM Children’s Book Drive, PLAY AGAIN film at Carlin School, free family swim, curling, and much more! In support of Family Literacy Week, The Mall at Piccadilly is hosting a ‘Jam The GM’ Children’s Book Drive January 21–27 by the library. The Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS), Salmon Arm GM, the Salmon Arm Okanagan Regional Library and The Mall at Piccadilly have all partnered to promote the Children’s Book Drive.

The challenge is for community members, businesses, organizations, and schools to “Jam the GM” with donations of gently used children’s books. All books will be distributed to local organizations that provide services for families in the North Okanagan-Shuswap.

The Salmon Arm Library Branch at the Mall will be hosting the Literacy Week Opening Ceremonies Monday January 21st at 1:30 p.m. which will include presentations, free refreshments and book giveaways. A family games night will be held on Friday, January 25 from 4:00–8:00 p.m. and there will be a family scavenger hunt on Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 p.m. The library staff invites you to come and join in the fun during Family Literacy Week.

To celebrate the upcoming Family Literacy Week, the Literacy Alliance Society of the Shuswap (LASS) is pleased to announce that free books will be riding on local transit for the week of January 21 to January 27.

With thanks to the Vernon and Shuswap Regional Transit and local publisher Playfort Publishing who donated the books, transit riders can read along the way and keep, share or give the books away when they reach their destination.

Books on buses is a new addition to the UnPlug and Play Family Literacy Week schedule of events. Books on buses is a growing movement in North America and Europe to promote a love of reading and enhance the transit experience.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Work and low back pain

If you have been following my articles for any time, you will understand the importance of a proper functioning nervous system to maintain optimal health and well-being. However, other conditions that benefit from chiropractic care are the more common ones, such as work-related low back pain (LBP).

It is well known in the literature that LBP is one

of society’s costliest afflictions, and that chiropractic is the most cost-effective therapy for this condition. However, until now research has been lacking in relation to work-related low back injuries and the effectiveness (and importance) of ongoing maintenance care once a person is able to return to work. Chiropractic patients have long understood the importance of post-injury maintenance adjustments to prevent recurring LBP following an injury. Yet not a single study had been published until a 2011 article in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine looked into this very topic.

What this study determined was that 10% of injured workers will experience a relapse of their LBP after returning to work. When the researchers looked at the likelihood of recurrence of LBP for patients receiving care from all different therapists, patients receiving chiropractic treatment had lower disability recurrence.

So what all of this research jargon means is that it is important for people who have suffered a low back injury, first to seek chiropractic care. Secondly, once a person is able to return to work, it is important to carry on with wellness/maintenance adjust-

Uses of eucalyptus

The therapeutic use of eucalyptus has been known since ancient times. It has antiseptic properties and is a very useful remedy for colds, flu and sore throat. It is found in various over-thecounter medications in the form of lozenges containing eucalyptus and other herbal ingredients used for sore throats.

Eucalyptus helps with a stuffy nose, and one can add a few drops onto a damp handkerchief and sniff it. The diluted essential oil of eucalyptus (diluted by adding olive oil) can be applied to the chest or the sinus area, which gives a warming effect and helps to relieve respiratory symptoms.

The same effect can be felt when diluted tinctures (diluted by adding water) are used for gargling.

Eucalyptus oil can be added to massage oil and applied to relieve minor pain and stiffness in joints or aching muscles. Diluted eucalyptus oil can also be used as a natural mosquito repellent. One can also add it to the washing to kill dust mites on bed sheets. This oil is certainly handy in winter, but it’s best to dilute it before using it as mentioned above by adding olive oil or almond oil.

The essential oil in this herb may increase asthmatic conditions and can cause bronchospasm when applied in undiluted form. Care should be taken when there is a recommendation of taking it orally as over 3 mls can cause severe poisoning, burning of the throat, stomach and muscular weakness, convulsions, or even death.

Panda warmer

A Panda warmer was recently delivered to Shuswap Lake General Hospital. The warmer is used to support newborn babies. Not only is the child kept warm while Mom takes a break, but the unit measures all vital signs, weighs the child, plus emergency procedures can be performed directly from the unit. The Shuswap Hospital Foundation appreciates the support of donors in allowing the hospital to provide the latest in technology to ensure the highest standards of care.

Oh no! I was worried something like this was going to happen! You get a pet and then everyone becomes attached to it. Yes, even I’ll admit I’ve become a little attached to the cat.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem becoming attached to the animal. I grew up with dogs and they quickly became a part of the family. However, this is my first go-round as a parent with children becoming attached to a pet; a pet that someday could get lost or worse.

If you’ve read my previous articles, you’ll know that Duma (our cat) goes to great lengths to get inside the house. So with the cold weather you can hardly crack open a door and she flies into the house and tries to hide under the couch to avoid being put back outside.

One night I noticed she wasn’t around the house and it seemed very strange. It was getting late and close to the time we usually bring her in for the night. My two oldest boys were still awake and so I asked them if they had seen her.

Neither had, and so my oldest started calling her. After 10 minutes or so I could tell he was becoming quite concerned. We live on a busy road and our property is frequented by coyotes so it is easy to fear the worst.

I began thinking that our pet experiment was short-lived and the boys will be devastated if something has happened to her. Okay, okay, I would miss her a little bit too! Who wouldn’t miss getting attacked by a cat every time you come home from work or finding out she has been licking the cheese you just put on your apple pie? I can handle

So I did what most parents would do in that same situation and reassured them that she must be chasing a mouse (what are the chances?) or off frolicking in the snow. This kind of explanation would probably have worked on my two youngest, but the two oldest weren’t exactly buying it.

“What do you mean Dad? She’s probably been eaten by a coyote or hit by a car!” my oldest responded.

Sensing some panic in his voice, I told the two boys she’s got to be somewhere, to go to bed and I’ll go look for her. So I got my big flashlight and bundled up and headed outside expecting the worse. I began tromping through our field and then worked my way along our fence line. After 15 minutes of searching I suddenly had the thought of checking our shed.

Thankfully my hunch was correct.

As soon as I opened the door she sprinted out. She must have followed someone into the shed and accidentally got locked in.

Duma was very excited to see me, and to be honest, I was excited to see her too. I didn’t really want to have to deal with whatever trauma the family would go through if she’d been eaten by a coyote and besides I really didn’t want to have to spend the money on getting a new cat and new shots, etc. It had nothing to do with the fact that I might actually miss her too… wink, wink.

KEEP DONATING TO THE SHUSWAP SPCA

One of my jobs in retirement is to look after rentals for absentee owners. Recently a tenant moved away and left a year-old cat. The incoming tenant didn’t want her, neither did any neighbours nor any of my friends.

I drove to the SPCA in the industrial park and reported her as being abandoned. But I was unable to surrender her because she wasn’t mine. She belonged to the former tenant.

Besides, there was a $35 surrender fee which I refused to pay. Back to my home office I drove for the phone number of the former tenant, and called it in to the SPCA. The number was changed to be a northern BC number, so the cat now belonged to the apartment’s owner whom the SPCA called.

He surrendered the cat to me. Now I was told to call him to confirm, which I did.

Finally I was given permission to bring the cat. I borrowed a carrier from the SPCA, drove down to the apartment, opened the little door and the curious cat walked right in. Quickly I closed it and drove back to the industrial park

‘the meaning’ IS A NOVEL ABOUT SALMON CITY

‘the meaning’ is a novel about a small town in southcentral British Columbia that many of you might easily recognize. Grant Venables, who took his schooling in Salmon Am and now teaches English Literature at the International School of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has completed writing adult fiction called ‘the meaning.’ He spent a few days in Salmon Arm last year to get a refreshed feel of some of the principal settings in the work.

He writes of the book, “It’s a story of a boy growing up there in the wilder days of the 1980s in this beautiful, lake town, about his escape from–what he perceives as–its smothering hold, and about his epiphany regarding the nurturing elements the town has always held for him.

“It is adult fiction, and it’s a bildungsroman, and most importantly, a love story: fathers and sons, his lake, his small lake town, friendships, and his high school sweetheart he can never quite shake.” This newspaper makes several appearances in the book. ‘the meaning’ is available through both Amazon and Smashwords, and there’s a nice review of it on www.amazon.com.

WHY DO READERS OF THIS PAPER SHOP IN OTHER CITIES?

I believe people go out-of-town to shop at Walmart. Those who tried to prevent Walmart from opening a store in Salmon Arm were the first to send our residents shopping in other cities. In 2008 they banded together and opposed plans for SmartCentres to build a shopping centre west of town, with Walmart as the anchor tenant. They called themselves CASSSA for Committee for a Strong Sustainable Salmon Arm, began fundraising, opened an office downtown, and had a website which has been discontinued.

At the first public hearing into the SmartCentres proposal on October 24, 2008, when over 500 people packed the Prestige conference room, it was CASSSA people who boo’d me when I was one of two people who spoke in favour. Mayor Marty Bootsma sternly asked the crowd to respect someone who had the courage to speak in favour when so many were against.

I BLAME THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE THIS SIGN

Many CASSSA members wanted to protect the wetlands along the Shuswap River from being filled and paved.

They used that as the reason for opposing the shopping centre development. A lawn sign was created that said Protect Wetlands. Property owners nailed the sign to trees and posts. Those are the people I blame for sending shoppers to big-box stores in neighbouring cities.

WA:TER OPPOSES SMARTCENTRES’ DEVELOPMENT

Another group was formed to put roadblocks into development of a shopping centre west of Salmon Arm. Go to www.wa-ter.ca. Drag down “About” and you will see the name of WA:TER’s board of directors and volunteers.

INDIAN BAND SUES CITY OF SALMON ARM

I blame the Neskonlith Indian Band for taking the city to the Supreme Court of BC for not consulting with the band before issuing a development permit to SmartCentres for the project across the river from reserve land. If you are new to the area, or did not pay attention to development delays, or have been living under a rock, Google: Neskonlith sues Salmon Arm. In my Sept 28 column I wrote: “On August 14 and 15, the BC Appeals Court in Vancouver heard the Neskonlith Indian Band’s appeal of the Supreme Court’s ruling in favour of the City of Salmon Arm in a dispute over the shopping centre west of town.” Neskonlith lost again.

If Neskonlith hadn’t sued the city, and then appealed the decision, I believe Smart Centres would have been under construction in 2012.

STOP BLAMING CITY COUNCIL

I do not blame past or present City of Salmon Arm councils for the lack of general retail shopping in Salmon Arm since Fields and Zellers were closed by Aug. 2, 2012. I watched city staff and councils try to cooperate with the developers, and I followed the roadblocks that were placed by opponents to prevent any progress. A Star Wars-themed event at Centenoka Park Mall raised money for Variety Children’s organization.

SAGA Public Art Gallery celebrated its 75th anniversary.

BC teachers walked out, along with students showing their solidarity for the province-wide strike. The walkout was an escalation of weeks of work-to-rule action.

The City of Salmon Arm chose to hire Kansas design firm CivicPlus to redo the city’s website, prompting a Shop Local campaign among city residents and businesses.

SmartCentres dropped the legal challenge preventing documents from being released that might prejudice the application for a municipal land use rezoning.

On January 16th, an Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement for School District #83 was signed by delegates, including Education Minister George Abbott, at the Sullivan campus of Salmon Arm Senior Secondary. It acknowledged that the district resides on the traditional territories of the Secwepemc People, and that both the District and the First Nations Education Council would endeavour to work jointly to enhance and improve the learning experiences for all aboriginal students within the district.

Larch Hills Nordic Society won the club championship for the second year in a row at the 2012 BC Championships, held for the first time at Larch Hills.

The Fields store in Centenoka Park Mall confirmed plans to close in May. Zellers would be closing at the end of July; leaving Salmon Arm with no department stores.

A cleanup project of all the tires in the lakeshore area was organized by Ken Strengel, who along with a big volunteer team including George Zorn and Dan Unterschultz, removed 152 tires from the waterfront and took them to Kal Tire to recycle as part of the BC Tire Stewardship program.

Canadian singer-songwriter Joel Plaskett and his band Emergency played a benefit concert at the Salmar Classic to support the Shuswap Environmental Action Society’s plan to purchase some property on the north shore of the Shuswap to conserve it. The City of Salmon Arm and other community organizations held a community event at Spirit Square on April 4th to celebrate Rick Hansen’s 25th Anniversary Relay, travelling across Canada.

Shuswap residents were ordered out of their homes as heavy rainfall caused swollen creeks to overflow their banks, causing widespread devastation. Part of Swansea Point Road was washed out at Two Mile, flooding through the Waterway Houseboat Vacations property. At least one home was swept away, and many more homes and dozens of cars were damaged in the area, where the local district declared a state of emergency.

The City of Salmon Arm closed the wharf at Canoe Beach and the boat launch at Marine Peace Park because of high water levels.

6 On October 24th, people attended rallies at MLA offices across the province to protest the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project. In Salmon Arm, protestors crowded on Alexander St. in front of George Abbott’s office. Salmon Arm had one of the largest turnouts in the province, with more participants than in Kamloops, Vernon and Kelowna.

On November 5, 2012, a 20-year-old male and a 21-year-old female were arrested and charged with first degree murder for Tyler’s Myers murder in 2008. A third, 21-year-old male from Salmon Arm was arrested later by RCMP investigators and charged with obstruction of justice.

It was announced that the third annual Sturgis North Motorcycle Rally would be held on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake, on Neskonlith band land.

Shuswap Middle School grade 6 student Evan Smith took the top spot in his age category of a National Forest Week contest held by the Association of BC Forest Professionals and the Truck Loggers Association. Contestants were asked to submit works of art about what the forest means to them.

After its defeat in the provincial courts, the Neskonlith Indian band decided not to pursue its appeal against the SmartCentres development. Construction is still held up, however, without a signed permit from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure needed by the City before it can issue a development permit.

Shawn & Carol Rogers of the Candy Vault won the Shuswap Visitor Friendly Program contest, with the highest number of ballots for Shuswap businesses. The prize includes a trip on a Waterway Houseboats boat.

The new community radio station Voice of the Shuswap began its broadcast.

Okanagan College’s Three Hour Short Story Contest was won by Grade 12 student Samantha Wex of Salmon Arm Secondary School with her story ‘Cat’s Cradle.’

A crash into Wood Lake on Highway 97 claimed the life of Salmon Arm resident Elly Collins.

For the many of us that really enjoy the outdoors, and our hunting and fishing, the time just seems to fly by quickly from season to season.

Presently, the cold and snow hasn’t stemmed the flow of ardent anglers to our local lakes for a bit of ice fishing. This is thanks to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, and their stocking programs in the five hatcheries they operate in the province. Like many other species, rainbow trout have diverse life histories. When the glaciers receded, rainbow trout, a trout with a red slash below the jaw, and trapped sockeye salmon, all evolved into our present-day diverse species;

becoming cutthroat, Pennask trout, and then, kokanee. As well, a larger aggressive strain of rainbow ended up in Kootenay Lake; these were later named Gerrard trout.

Others went on to colonize the many newly available habitats, lakes and rivers that we know today. One of the oldest strains was the Pennask Lake fish, of course. Many years ago, the BC Fish and Game branch started a small hatchery on Trout Creek at Summerland, and a stocking program began for many interior lakes. Beaver Lake, above Winfield, also had a small egg-taking facility.

raised brook trout, and then kokanee, with eggs from Okanagan Lake. Moving to modern times, this was the beginning of the strains we have today, and the science and technology behind it all.

Locally, Phillips and Gardom Lakes are the two stars, attracting anglers for fast-growing triploid trout, that are fun to catch and very palatable at the dinner table. It appears there are two strains of trout in Gardom; one being the Fraser Valley, and the other, Blackwater. Fraser Valleys are a fast-growing aggressive strain, easy to catch.

The most fascinating aspect in the overall fish culture program, is the genetic selection, sterilization, and triploiding of these trout. How to avoid panic painting designdilemmas

Several times in the last few weeks I have been asked for help picking fabric for window treatments and upholstery to coordinate with the new wall colour.

In each instance, the paint colour was chosen without regard for the design plan of the room, the colour of the existing furniture, the floor colour or the window treatment requirements; it was chosen because the homeowner, or the painter, liked it. No plan. Just panic painting. Now there are problems and they need help.

If you are doing some renovating, or are having a case of the winter blahs and want to spruce things up a bit, and you are in a hurry: please, please people. Post this column on your fridge.

“It is easier to pick a paint colour to match a fabric than it is to find a fabric to match the new painted walls.”

Panic painting means: • You have to do a lot of shopping and schlepping bolts of fabric home.

• You have to expand your budget – you will have to buy what fits the colour, not your wallet.

• You have to be prepared to adjust

your room plan to fit the fabric.

• You have to be prepared to settle for less. A lot less. The colour of the new blinds may not be right, the rug may never blend in, and the odd colour in the wood floor may never be successfully countered.

• You have to be prepared to wait.

Chances are really good it will take a long time to find a suitable fabric.

This is rather like buying a new dress and then having to buy new shoes, a new bag, new jewelry and a new coat.

And a new scarf. Wouldn’t it be a lot easier, and a lot less expensive, to pick a dress in a colour that works with what you already have?

Here is the proven path: Pick a piece of fabric, a painting, a cushion or an area rug with the colours you love and use it as your inspiration piece. If you have a green sofa, make sure the inspiration piece has that particular green.

Use the background colour in the inspiration piece as the main colour for 60% of the room surfaces. This includes the walls. Use the mid tone colour for 30% and one accent colour from the piece for the remaining 10%. This works.

And just one more thing. The cost of a colour consultation is a lot less than the cost of the wrong paint colour.

Enderby launches Business Beautification Program

The City of Enderby and Community Futures of the North Okanagan are pleased to launch an innovative Business Beautification Program.

By participating in this program, Enderby businesses will be able to access a financial incentive that will go towards façade improvements.

Through the Enderby Business Beautification Program, eligible businesses will be able to access an incentive fund covering 10% of the material costs associated with a commercial façade improvement.

The minimum incentive value is $200 (for projects with at least $2,000

in material costs) and the maximum incentive value is $1,000 (for projects with $10,000 or more in material costs).

The total value of the incentive fund is $10,000. All applications must be pre-approved.

If fully subscribed, at least $90,000 worth of private sector investment

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) invites residents of Anglemont, Celista and Scotch Creek/Lee Creek, who would like to serve on a newly created Sub-Regional Fire Services Advisory Committee to complete and return an Expression of Interest Form. An Expression of Interest Form is available on the CSRD website, www.csrd.bc.ca or by contacting the Environment and Engineering Department listed below.

CSRD Staff will review all submissions and will schedule meetings with all applicants in February 2013.

The Advisory Committee will consist of a representative and alternate from each community along with the Fire Chiefs, the CSRD Fire Services Coordinator and Area Director to provide advice to the CSRD regarding the operations and governance of the three paid-per-call fire departments located in Electoral Area ‘F’. Your contributions as an Advisory Committee member will benefit the community by providing collaboration on important projects such as: • property acquisition in Lee Creek and Anglemont for new fire halls; • prioritizing capital purchases for consideration in the five year budgeting process; • consideration of Superior Tanker Shuttle Accreditation; • developing a local FireSmart campaign aimed at reducing risk to residential homes in the event of a wildfire; • identifying and promoting Life and Safety Initiatives to mitigate risk and enhance accountability for health and safety; • consideration of Fire department recruitment and retention plans in efforts to develop stronger, more resilient fire departments.

Committee members will typically meet 3 - 4 times per year throughout the service area. Term of office of committee members is three years in duration, commencing on the first scheduled meeting of 2013.

Individuals who best satisfy the following requirements will be recommended to the CSRD Board of Directors for appointment: • Interest and passion for enhancing community fire services.

• Desire to share knowledge and experience in a range of subjects relevant to fire services.

• Must be age of majority and ordinarily a resident in the relevant participating Fire Suppression Service Area.

Winter Jamboree a success

By Mike Effray The Shuswap Swimming Team was host to approximately 40 swimmers from Kamloops, Vernon and Salmon Arm to compete at the 4th Annual Winter Jamboree Swim Meet, held in Salmon Arm this past Sunday, January 13th.

The meet was geared towards swimmers who are relatively new to the sport of competitive swimming, and looking to have positive first experiences!

The Shuswap Swimming Team had great results at the competition, as they ended up with over 20 first place finishes, and 2 new team records broken at the competition.

On the girls’ side: 9-10-year-old girls – Mataia Makela (10) had a great meet, as she ended up with three first place finishes, coming in the 9-10 girls 50 metre Backstroke, 200m Breaststroke and 400m Freestyle races. Also scooping up a pair of victories were Miya Coutlee (10) who was won the 100m Individual Medley, and Rebecca Henz (10) who won the 50m Breaststroke and 200m

Individual Medley races. Lanie Greenhough (10) swam very well, as she earned three 2nd place finishes in the 50m Butterfly, 200m Backstroke and the 100m Individual Medley, while Eva Mosher (9) also earned a 2nd place finish in the 200m Breaststroke race.

The 10 & U girls’ team of Greenhough, Henz, Mosher and Makela combined in the 4 x 50 Freestyle relay to win first place in the 10 & U girls relay race.

11-12-year-old girls – Paige Rasmuson-Saitz (11) swam well too, as she won first place in the 11-12 girls’ 50m Freestyle.

Adding a win for herself was team mate Shelbi Richard, who won the 50m Backstroke race.

13 & older girls – Ginette Wall (13) also had a good meet, as she won first place in all five of the races that she swam: the 13 & O girls’ 50m Backstroke; 50m Breaststroke; 50m Butterfly; 100m Individual Medley; and 400m Freestyle races.

The girls’ team of RasmusonSaitz, Wall, Richard & Coutlee also made up a winning combi-

nation as they won first place in the 4 x 50 Freestyle for the 11 & older girls’ relay race.

On the boys’ side: 9-10-year-old boys – Jacob Rambo (10) swam well, as he handily won first place in all four of his races: the 9-10 boys’ 100m Individual Medley; 50m Backstroke; 50m Breaststroke and 50m Butterfly races. The times performed in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly were fast enough to both break the team records for those two events.

11-12-year-old boys – Landon Quilty (11) had a great swim meet, as he earned 1st place as his best result at the meet, coming in the 11-12 boys’ 50m Backstroke race.

This was the first result of the year for 2013, and the team was pleased with the competition’s results. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Shuswap Swimming Team, then please call 250-804-2006 for more information about how to join.

By Corey Saitz The Shuswap Fury Petite ringette team played a great game and defeated Kelowna White by a score of 11-3 with goals by Stephanie Martin (3), Tori Keehn (3), Brooklyn Agricola(2), Jordyn Turner (2), with a single from Paige Saitz. Assists went to Jaiden Clifford, Tori Keehn, Emma Gollen, and Jordyn Turner. Tamara Brown had a strong game in net for the Fury. The Fury then defeated the Vernon Rebels 10-9 in a nail biter.

The Fury started off strong and had a 8-3 lead at the end of the first period. Jordyn Turner had a great game and made some big saves and held off a surging Vernon team. Stephanie Martin had a strong game with 4 goals and one assist, Brooklyn Agricola and Tori Keehn had two apiece, and a single from Tamara Brown. Two assists from Heidi Leigh Boileau and Tori Keehn. Singles from Bethany Riley and Paige Saitz.

ISABEL SPENCE SPENCE, Isabel passed away suddenly at St. Paul·s Hospital, Vancouver, BC on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the age of 82 years.

Isabel was born on July 21, 1930 in Revelstoke, BC. She lived in Revelstoke for many years before moving to Vancouver.

Isabel had lived in Salmon Arm for the past 22 years. Isabel had a passion for Áower gardening and Àshing. She was a great lover of animals of all kinds and enMoyed feeding the wild birds. She loved to cook and bake for her family.

Isabel will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, Ralph; children, Rod (Marcella) of Revelstoke, Barbara (Dan) Boltwood of Revelstoke, Robert of Vancouver and Debbie (Glenn) Parke of Salmon Arm; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are brother, Ronald Frank and sister, Nora Friesen. She was predeceased by her brother, Wilfred Frank.

Isabel·s kind, generous nature and heart warming smile will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Nov.1, 1945 – Jan. 6, 2013 Shannon passed away suddenly on January 6, 2013 at the Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, at the age of 67 years.

The funeral service was held from the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home, Salmon Arm, on Saturday afternoon, January 12th at 2 p.m. Interment followed in the family plot in Mt. Ida Cemetery. Pallbearers were; Pastor James Campbell, Murray Campbell, Kevin Norris, Randy Gerow, Matt Eisenhauser, and Scott Turner.

Shannon was born in Eckville, Alberta, and moved with her parents to Rutland in 1946. She grew up in Rutland (Kelowna) and graduated there in 1963. She worked in Rutland until 1965 at which time she moved to Salmon Arm and began long employment in the ofÀce of Federated Co-op in Canoe.

Shannon was predeceased by her father, Joe Buresh, in 1977, mother-in-law, Naomi Campbell, father-in-law Neil Campbell, sistersin-law Marlene Campbell, Fran Campbell and Chris Norris.

Shannon is survived by her husband of 46 years, Maynard, her mother, June Buresh, Sister Bev Turner (Wayne), brother Gord Buresh (Linda), nieces, Cheryl Kay, Calyn Buresh and nephew, Scott Turner, and Àve great nephews, Justin, Cameron, Cody, Liam and Chae.

Shannon is also survived by her extended family, brother-in-laws, James Campbell (Janis), Murray Campbell, Dave Norris, sister and brother-in-law Carol and Roland Stickle and several nieces and nephews.

Roberta Anne (Bobbie) Niessen passed away in Bastion Place, Salmon Arm, BC on January 8, 2013 at the age of 72 years.

A celebration of life service was held from the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home, Salmon Arm, on Saturday morning, January 12th at 11 a.m. with Jack Bowers the funeral celebrant, with tributes shared by family and friends.

Born in New Westminster, BC on September 10, 1940. She moved to Salmon Arm, with infant daughter, Sandra and husband, Ben, in 1965, soon after Leanne was born. Bobbie was dedicated to looking after the home and her girls; she is fondly remembered for her love of sports, including Hockey (go Vancouver Canucks), billeting Jr. Hockey players, Baseball, Lacrosse, and Curling.

Being an avid curler for 24 plus years, the girls remember her curling in the Old Rink downtown Salmon Arm. Bobbie was predeceased by her parents, mother Margaret, and father Donald Urquhart, whom she was very close with and never did get over his passing, and her husband, Ben.
