Sunny side of the street City road work fixes announced for 2014 ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff

this summer will focus on the Whiteriver (Whiteswan) Forest Service Road. Work will start in July on the bridge over the White River at 44 kilometres and continue until October, Rebagliati said, adding that this project alone has a $1 million price tag.

Fixes are coming to many roads around Cranbrook. The 2014 Capital Roads Program has outlined seven roadway priorities in terms of roadwork for the year. The first is 6th Street North, from Kootenay Street to Victoria Avenue, at a cost of $1.7 million. That will include replacing portions of the sidewalk and concrete, removing and replacing the water main and the sanitary sewer main, removal of unsuitable soils and replacement of storm mains as required. A full reconstruction of the sub base, base and asphalt for the full width of the road is also planned and then the road will be repaved. Mayor Wayne Stetski said he is excited about the program and the improvements it will bring to Cranbrook.

Two Alberta girls are safe and their mother has been arrested after an Amber Alert issued Wednesday morning garnered public tips that helped police locate the trio in British Columbia’s Fraser Canyon. By evening, RCMP said six-year-old Taya Meisel and her 12-year-old sister, Talisha, were located in Boston

Bar, B.C., about 215 northeast of Vancouver. Their mother, 48-year-old Trina Meisel, who does not have legal guardianship, faces two counts of abduction. Acting on information from the public, police said they located the three and took them into custody without trouble.

Some backroads still closed from 2013 floods SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff

If you’re heading out into the backcountry this May long weekend, bear in mind that you may not be able to access your favourite spot. The floods of June 2013 devastated East Kootenay backroads, damaging more than 30 bridges and 50 separate sites and wracking up a

repair bill of at least $5.5 million. While an astounding amount of repairs were made last year, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is still stretching its capital budget to continue repairs this year. Dave Rebagliati, an engineer with the Rocky Mountain Forest District, said work
