For the first time in its history, the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy will take place in the northern hemisphere and rumours are swirling that the event will land in Nelson and the surrounding area. While that has yet to be confirmed, it is known that the 2014 motorcycle challenge will begin in Calgary and circle into the Kootenay, before ending back in Calgary. The rest of the route is secret. The GS Trophy is an endurance competition where riders are not asked to race, as much as perform challenges with their bikes, It combines riding skills with endurance, mechanical knowledge and more. This year, in September, 16 teams composed of participants from at least 18 nations are set to rendezvous in Canada to compete in this friendly competition dedicated to the famous GS spirit. So far, teams from Germany, France, Italy, United Kingdom, Russia, Austria/Switzerland, CEEU (Central Eastern Europe), USA, Mexico, Latin America, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Japan and Korea will

join host nation Canada. Nelson’s Patrick Horan represented Canada in the GS Trophy in 2010 in South Africa. At the conclusion of that event, Horan thought Canada was the perfect location to hold the competition and began a campaign to bring it to BC. “I said we as Canadians can do this event and I thought we could do it very well,” explained Horan. BC has the natural terrain for some of the skills competitions and Horan told organizers to check it out for themselves. But he didn’t do it alone. “I’m just the point man. There are three of us that were involved in trying to get this together.” Organizers of the event came out for a scouting mission and Horan took them on a tour of Southern BC. He knew Canada was in the running, but so was the US and Mongolia. The natural landscape seems to have impressed organizers as Canada was selected as the site, specifically BC and Alberta. Horan said he was confident the trails and beauty of the area would entice organiz$ 99 ers, after all he’s ridden

here his whole life. When Horan was young, he used to dirt bike up the hills at Six Mile. He has had a life long love affair with motorcycles having competed internationally. He even owned a motorcycle shop, Four Seasons Equipment, in Nelson. “When I first started riding up in these hills, that was a huge event in my life. I started to discover new valleys and things. I remember thinking, everybody should do this. It is so surreal to be out and seeing these mountaintops,” he explained. Now he has helped bring the world to “share my playground.” “If it does stop in Nelson, it would be great,” he said. Whether Nelson ends up being part of the route remains to be seen. However, last month, two representatives from Germany were in Nelson to both scout locations and to meet with representatives from the local tourism industry.

Tom Thomson of the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, along with Dianna Ducs of Nelson/Kootenay Lake Tourism were part of the meeting. One of the topics was whether Nelson could host a public event as part of the GS Trophy. Lakeside Park was also discussed as a good location. “Let’s come up with a good idea for them and do an event that we could have participation from the public to watch. A lot of these events take place off road, so we need to come up with something a little more public,” explained Thomson. While the route may not become public until the end of May, Thomson said having the event in the Kootenay is a huge deal. “It’s an international event and when you have 16 or 17 different countries coming over to Canada, specifically the West Kootenay region, I think it’s great for international exposure.”

Tip of the Week: As Taurus time yields to Gemini this week, in the wake of the Scorpio Full Moon, this time merits some extra attention. The Solar Eclipse in late April planted some potent seeds. Not everyone has the soil destined to produce the abundance it implies, yet everyone is feeling the impact somehow. The steadily escalating gas prices are one of the more obvious synchronistic casualties with the greater collective bearing the brunt. That the Moon was in close proximity to Saturn is yet another reflection of this additional fiscal weight and restriction. Venus in Aries, not its bet placement, in close alignment with Uranus suggests that this rather sudden hike is also synchronizing with a general state of stress, dissatisfaction and even rebellion. When such a fundamental commodity that affects so many people and commerce in general, it is bound to produce shock waves rumbling in every direction. In other words inflation across the notion is the obvious consequence. Other factors in the planetary portrait indicate that the real reaction will be delayed, but it will come. It will likely take until about mid-June before the collective discontent rises and it will escalate through July and peak in August. When private interests disrupt the general economy, anger, distrust and cynicism are common reactions. The Gemini factor which has already begun and will continue throughout June will at least produce a lot of chatter on the airwaves and of course in the media, social and otherwise. So, the bull has been released from its pen and this one is a prize stock sample. How will the conquistador assert to prevail and overcome? This is one creature that will prove very difficult to defeat. Conflict is woven into the game of life but some opponents are much bigger and stronger than others. It seems quite appropriate that the new and bigger than even representation of Godzilla and with a unique twist (Venus conjunct Uranus) in that it is pitted with humanity against a common enemy – greed, arrogance and corruption, is slated to be released right at the time of the Scorpio Full Moon born of the Solar Eclipse which occurred on the heels of the first of 4 Lunar Eclipses or what have come to be called by some as the ‘blood moon tetrad’. Yes, signs of the times.

Jordan Wren still thinks back to that day one year ago when a quiet act of heroism saved his family and the lives of a young crew working in the yard at the bottom of the Warfield hill. Blue skies were the backdrop as Wren, girlfriend Ashley and her two young sons buckled up in their Warfield driveway and then headed up the hill planning for a quick stop in Rossland before hitting the highway to the coast. Within seconds of turning left on Tennyson Ave. and into the highway’s left hand lane directed towards the Alpine City, Wren was stunned to see a small pickup barrelling down the hill with lights flashing and one person inside frantically honking his horn. “At first I thought, ‘Holy what’s going on with this guy,’” said Wren. “Then not five sec-

onds later I see this semi squealing around the corner like it’s being pushed by the trailer. “At first I didn’t realize how deep in shock I was,” he said. “But then I realized I had to make a call and talk to the person who saved my life and my family’s life that day.” That day began as any other for Gary Westbury. The Rossland retiree left his Thompson Avenue home, got into his Ford Ranger and drove to a highway exit near the Redstone Resort golf course. It was in that area, Westbury first noticed a semi truck headed down the hill with its brakes heavily smoking. “First of all I didn’t like that smell of the brakes and I knew with all that smoke something was seri-

ously wrong,” said the soft spoken man. He pulled to the side of the transport truck and attempted to communicate with the semi’s driver, but soon noted that the man was in deep concentration and didn’t look over. “I could sense that there was trouble,” said Westbury. “So at that point, I thought, ‘What can I do from here.’” That’s when instinct that he credits, in part, to time spent in the Teck fire hall, kicked in and Westbury drove between five and 10 car lengths in front of the truck that by this time was gaining speed with heavy blue smoke emanating from the back wheels. “I was trying to keep my eye far

enough ahead to keep anyone from cutting him off from the first runaway,” explained Westbury. But as the semi careened down the hill, the driver did not take the first runway or the second, which is closer to the bottom of the hill. “I was still trying to think what I could do,” said Westbury. “But by that time I had my four flashers on and was looking for people coming up and was thinking to cut them off if he ended up going straight. So I cut right through that intersection (bottom of Warfield hill) to let people know he was coming by laying on my horn and at the same time, turning on my flashers.”

Westbury recalls seeing the Warfield workers running but is hesitant to say it was his horn they heard as a warning. “From what I remember it was a combination of him (the semi) and horn that made them look up and started running. It all happened so fast.” The whole tragic event unfolded in a matter of minutes, and Wren has taken a year to work through what he saw that day. But he is certain of one thing. “Gary Westbury is the sole reason more people were not injured, or worse, in such a terrible accident,” he said. “Now a year later it’s time to bring out the story of the heroic factor of that day.”

Fort Shepherd named for Hudson’s Bay governor Greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Fifty-ninth in a series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names. There’s Fort Shepherd and there’s Fort Sheppard: nearby but separate places with

different spellings. The latter was an obscure townsite on the east side of the Columbia River, at its confluence with the Pend d’Oreille, while the former was a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post on the west side of the

Columbia, just north of the Canada-US border and six kilometers southwest of presentday Trail. Angus MacDonald established the post between 1856 and 1859 as a replacement on British soil for the company’s Fort Colvile, in what’s now Washington State. It was originally known as Fort Pend d’Oreille before being renamed for Hudson’s Bay Company governor John Shepherd (1792-1859). Several sources suggest the name change followed his death, but it appears to have been

earlier, for in a letter dated July 20, 1857, British colonial governor James Douglas wrote: “Chief trader Blenkinsop will be stationed at the new establishment, which we have named after the governor, Fort Shepherd.” The first newspaper reference to the fort isn’t until the Victoria British Colonist of October 10, 1859. In any case, it was the first permanent European settlement in what is now West Kootenay. Here the company built a store, warehouses, employee barracks,

and a headquarters for its factor, all out of logs. It was a stopping place on the Dewdney Trail, close to a Sinixt village, and witnessed the short-lived Pend d’Oreille gold rush. A Colonial post office opened on July 13, 1865. But Fort Shepherd never lived up to the company’s expectations for lack of arable land. It closed in 1870 and burned two years later, although one of its chimneys stood for at least another 40 years.

After several false starts, the Trail Kinsmen Club finally erected a cairn with a bronze plaque to mark its site in 1951. The plaque went missing a few years ago, but the Trail Historical Society plans to replace it with a replica. The land itself is now part of a conservancy area with signs pointing to it from the east side of the Columbia. Fort Shepherd continued to be used as a byword for the region into the late 1880s. Its first misspelling as Fort

Sheppard was in a legal ad in the Nelson Miner of December 27, 1890 heralding the impending construction of Daniel Chase Corbin’s Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway. Once the mistake was made, there was no correcting it — nor, it seems, any admission it was a mistake at all. But it was true that the line would run between Nelson and the now-forgotten townsite of Fort Sheppard, where our story continues next week.

Flipping between the Normal, Eco and Sport modes and tapping the gear-changing paddles on the steering wheel made for an enjoyable drive. Little lean in the corners and sprightly up hill. Both engines are coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission with a SHIFTRONIC manual mode. The base price is $43,000, $48,000 gets you the Luxury version, and $53,000 loads up the tech features. The eAssist edition has a mildhybrid powertrain that uses an electric motor/lithium-ion battery pack combo to boost power to road wheels when needed, and conserves fuel. It’s the most economical edition of Regal with a frugal city/highway fuel economy rating of 8.3/5.4 L/100km respectively. The GS edition is a more potent version of Turbo that rides lower and comes with Brembo front disc brakes and 19-inch or 20-inch (optional) wheels. Under hood its turbocharged engine can produce 255-horsepower and 295 ft-lb of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/hour is under 7-seconds and its highway fuel economy is 7.4 L/100 km. The base (CXL/2.4-litre engine) edition was dropped for the 2013 model year and trim levels offered were eAssist, Turbo, Turbo Sport, and GS. the Buick Regal. Yet, this Regal is a very different beast. While it may not possess the awesome straight-line power of its ancestor, it’s a hoot to drive for different and probably better reasons. It was based on the German designed Opel Insignia, which was the 2009 European Car of the Year. The 2011 Regal was made in Germany but then (2012 and on) all production was switched to Oshawa, Ontario. The overall design profile of this Regal is coupe-like, even though it has four doors. Up front, there’s a modern version of Buick’s traditional “waterfall” grille and an extra-large version Buick’s tri-shield emblem. At the rear, the sloping roofline connects to a short deck with distinctive and large wrap-around taillights. The turbo engine versions of Regal should definitely be on the checklist of buyers looking at mid-sized sporty frontdrive premium sedans such as the Volvo S60 or Acura TSX. Regal has a longer wheelbase (a more comfortable ride) and comes with a larger trunk. The base CXL trim comes with a 2.4L direct-injected engine rated at 182 horsepower (136 kW) mated with a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s a drive combination that provides decent power and very good highway fuel economy, rated at 6.5L/100 km. The CXL Turbo trim, on the other hand, comes with a 2.0L turbocharged directinjection engine that’s rated at 220 horsepower (164 kW). The auto transmission is a crisper-shifting six speed unit and its 6.9L/100 km highway fuel economy is still good, considering the extra power. Buick expanded the Regal

Chevrolet Impala. The previous Impala was a favourite for company sales fleets or rental car companies, with a minority of buyers choosing them for personal transportation. Looks This is a very handsome car, I can clearly remember seeing for the first time over a year ago at the New York Auto Show and it was the standout of that event. This new design is striking on several levels. The front design has the signature Chevrolet split grille that was so warmly received on this car that they borrowed it and graphed it into the smaller Malibu. The side has sweeping front windshield and rear window with a high rear deck that provides a sleek silhouette. Prices start at just over $28,000 and the 2LT is fitted with the V6 engine and starts at almost $33,000. Inside It looks and works well, showcasing what GM is doing right. The mixture of materials shapes and colours really makes this cabin pop. The seats can be covered in cloth on the base car, faux suede seats or leather on the top models. The dash is covered in soft touch materials; I especially like the textured aluminum look around the window buttons and cup holders. The MyLink infotainment system is easy to use and the graphics look good and the screen pops up for access to the hidden storage area with a USB jack. Standard features include tilt and telescopic steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, USB, 8-way power driver’s seat and more. But the back seat might be the best part of this car. The legroom has limo like dimensions and the space side-to-side and headroom is ample. The trunk is also huge with a fold down rear seat, providing more space than many small SUVs. continued on page B5

Not the choice for a backcountry road excursions but stable and secure feeling. Verdict Consumer Reports recently rated this one of the best cars they had ever tested,

right behind the Tesla Model S and BMW 135i. This new Impala does everything a big car buyer is looking for: It cruises with ease, has more than enough room for five full size adults and the interior is quiet and refined. I would suggest that buyers of more expensive Luxury brands like Buick or Lexus give this car a shot, it has all the same comfort but with a lower price point. Once main criticism of this new car is the lack of an all wheel drive system. The Buick LaCrosse does off it as dose the Cadillac, the

4 ways to conserve fuel at the pump

Those costs can be considerable, especially if gas continues to hover around $4 per gallon as it has for much of 2012. by employing a few strategies aimed at increasing their driving efficiency. The following are a few ways drivers can offset high fuel costs regardless of the time of year. 1. Maintain a consistent speed. Though it might be hard to maintain a consistent speed when driving during rush hour, it should not be too difficult to do so when hitting the open road. If most of your driving is done on the highway, go easy on your engine by maintaining a consistent speed. The easier you

are on the engine, the less taxed that engine will be and the less fuel it will need as a result. If going on a long road trip or if your daily commute involves long stretches of highway driving, rely on your vehicle’s cruise control function to make things easier on your engine and conserve fuel. 2. Don’t drive when you can walk or bike. It might sound simple, but the best way to conserve fuel is not to use it at all. During the warmer months, walk or ride your

bicycle when performing local errands. This is especially beneficial during the summer, when gas prices are typically higher. Save a few gallons of gas by running errands on foot or on your bicycle. If a physical condition makes it hard for you to walk or bike, make use of public transportation when you need to travel locally. 3. Obey the speed limit. The open road entices many drivers to put the pedal to the metal, but driving over the speed limit is both ille-

gal and expensive. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that drivers pay an additional $0.31 per gallon for every five miles they drive over 60 mph. Since gas prices have already hovered around $4 per gallon for much of the year, drivers would be wise to obey the speed limit and conserve their fuel as well as their money. 4. Don’t make your vehicle into a traveling closet. Many drivers keep excess materials in their cars, whether it’s a cooler for picnics, a set of golf

clubs or an old baby stroller. Excess weight will rear its ugly head at the pump. The DOE notes than an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce its miles per gallon by as much as two percent. Before hitting the highway, check your trunk and the backseat and remove any unnecessary items. Drivers spend a considerable amount of money at the gas pump each week. But a few simple strategies to conserve fuel can save money and help the planet at the same time.

Some RVs have fixed dimensions, while others expand, either manually or electronically, pushing out walls to provide even more interior room when the RV is parked. RVs have different floor plans, and there are many different

models to fit a buyer’s needs. Many RVs are equipped with no frills furnishings, but there are models that feature topof-the-line appliances and fixtures. It’s possible to get granite countertops and cherry cabinets in an RV, but such accessories will increase the cost of the vehicle. Upholstered sofas and dining room banquettes may be upgraded to leather. Some RVs have an additional kitchenette built into the exterior of the unit for easy access when barbecuing or cooking at a campsite. How you plan to use the RV

should also be considered prior to purchasing one. Will you be spending time cooking meals and sleeping inside, or will it mainly be used as a storage unit for your camping gear? Do you plan on taking extended vacations and desire all the comforts of home? Defining these goals will help you find the right RV for you. Another thing to consider is renting an RV for a day or two to get a feel for driving it and what it is like to spend a night inside. You may be able to determine if you need more or less of a mobile home when you ultimately decide to pur-

chase. Make sure everything works before you drive the RV off of the lot. Repairs can be expensive, and you do not want to be stuck with a lemon when you’re on the road. Find out if there are any roadside assistance packages that can be negotiated to offer you peace of mind with your first RV. Luxury and hi-tech systems abound in the 4x4s that show up in the local media test fleets. When I stepped out of one of the more loaded examples the other I got to thinking about yesteryear. Some might refer to them as the good old days – judge for yourself. I remember – not that long ago – four wheeling in a truck when the standard transmission shifter was so loose, you

didn’t know you were in gear or neutral. Anti-lock brakes were when you lost your master cylinder to a stick, while (independently minded) power steering kicked in when you hit the corner of a rock so hard it ripped the steering wheel out of your hand and if you weren’t carful your thumb as well. Traction control came in the shape of new tires. Automatic four-wheel-drive was achieved by asking

your passenger to step out and lock the front hubs. The parking brake was a log shoved under the rear tire. Soft suspension meant your shocks were blown. Off-road suspension meant you spent more time hitting the roof with your head and back than you actually spent on the seat, which if you were lucky had some remaining padding still in it. Your seat belts would tighten up on every bump and if you didn’t stop you would

be suffocated. You would be lucky if your radio would bring in a few channels on the AM band only! And the CB radio might just reach the driver in front of you. Wheel articulation really indicated your leaf spring was broken in half. Air conditioning was driving with your windows down and trying to breath in between dust clouds. GPS was your buddy screaming out, “I think it’s this road”.

Most people used to sleep in the back of their trucks. However, I remember one time after a long day of fourwheeling pulling into an open area by a river where I found a nice sandy mound. With the aid of my flash light I quickly spread the sand out with my arms making a flat area in which to put my tent. It was about 5:30 am when I first noticed the red ants crawling all around

my sleeping bag. I was tired so killing the one at a time was not a big deal until I saw many climbing the side of the tent. I quickly climbed out of my tent to discover the soft sandy mound I found was actually a giant anthill. The vehicles of today have the capabilities of descending steep hills without even putting your foot on the brake and you could disconnect your sway bar end links to allow for more articulation.
