WildPlay parks Tucked along the banks of the Nanaimo River sits a playground where the young and old are encouraged to walk on the wild side. That playground is known as WildPlay Element Parks, an adventure park, where visitors can zip-line from tree to tree, swing on ropes and even walk on wires.

ildPlay is located on Nanaimo River Road just off the Island Highway. The park’s four main attractions include bungy jumping from a 46-metre high bridge over the Nanaimo River, using the Dragonfly zip lines, trying out a Primal Swing or meandering through the Monkido Ariel Adventure course. WildPlay Nanaimo park manager Jennifer Doyle explained that the Monkido Course has something to offer for everyone. The Monkido course is a made up of four levels that become progressively harder the deeper into the course you get. Each section of the course is colour-coded to indicate the level of difficulty, with green being the easiest and black being the hardest. It is worth mentioning that once you

begin there is no turning back until you reach the end of each level. Green and Blue: The green and blue levels are straightforward. The green course begins at about two metres off the ground and forces you to walk across a wooden bridge and then zip line onto obstacles that slightly increase in difficulty. Red: Beginning at approximately 10 metres above the ground and reaching high as 16 metres, the red level offers terrific views of the parkland and surrounding area while testing your endurance and balance. Throughout the red level, you’ll encounter all kinds of interesting obstacles, such as zip lines, rope swings, lines, a Tarzan-style rope swing, wooden barrels and other obstacles and is the perfect mixture of fun and challenging. Black: The black level is by far the most

difficult portion of the Monkido course. It easily tests your upper body strength, endurance, balance and stamina. The level begins by forcing you to climb up to the highest point in the course at 18 metres. Once you reach the top, you have to walk on a long thin wire before encountering the toughest portion of the course. The course finishes with a series of long zip lines that provide plenty of outstanding views. The entire Monkido course takes approximately two hours to complete and provides a great mental and physical workout. Whether you go as an individual, with a group of friends or as part of a co-worker outing, the Monkido course is worth the experience. Take an art class

ooking for a little therapy from a hectic week? Try taking an art class, especially if you’re the type who needs to work with your hands and engage the right side of your brain to decompress from a busy day. Between Nanaimo Parks and Recreation and private arts supply outlets and studios, there’s a number of places in Nanaimo you can go to delve into your artistic inkling. Be prepared to think outside of the box. Painting, for instance, isn’t just about pigment and brushes. Watercolour techniques bring a surprising tool kit to hand, like brushes, for sure, but chopped up credit cards? And then there’s that thing you do with a toothbrush. “Oh, that’s splatter,” said Helen Binns, watercolour course instructor for Iron Oxide Arts Supplies. “There’s splatter, there’s sponging or stamping, graded washes, puddling.” First thing to learn in water colouring is how to perform a graded wash by applying colour from dark to light on paper. “Puddling” means adding colour to a puddle of water or paint already on the paper.

Learning to control pigment, water and paper to create texture, shadowing and depth can be challenging, but watching colours flow into one another and seeing how they react with the paper as they’re applied is fascinating. Chopped up credit cards are for creating rock textures, fences, grass or cityscapes by dragging their points and sharp edges across paint and paper. Sponges make leafy textures for trees. Lay down a dark pigment along the edge of a wet surface and the pigment bleeds across the moisture and birch bark appears before your eyes. There’s a high degree of control, but it’s not in watercolour’s nature to do what you want it to. “You have to persuade it,” said Binns, who is also a professional badminton coach with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Her three-hour classes are dynamic and cover a lot of ground in each session. “One thing I learned working with teams is they get bored really quickly, so you’ve got to keep them doing and hide the learning,” Binns said. She got serious about watercolour paint-

ing when she travelled around the world in 2005 with a basic painting kit and a little paper. “The thing that I love about watercolour is all you need is a small paintbox, three brushes, a little plastic container and your water bottle… and you can sit anywhere,” Binns said. Learning watercolour techniques doesn’t come easy to everyone, but those who take longer to learn them often become the best artists, Binns said. “There’s a lot of different ones going on for all skill levels, from basic drawing – draw the world around you – to abstract watercolour classes, to acrylic and more,” said Willow Friday, owner of Iron Oxide. “The classes are always evolving.” Prices vary per class type and there are classes for kids, too. Go for a walk – For anyone looking to explore the outdoors in a more leisurely fashion, Nanaimo offers parks including Cottle Lake (Linley Valley), Neck Point, Piper’s Lagoon, Buttertubs Marsh, Colliery Dam, Bowen, Biggs, Cable Bay, Beach Estates and Newcastle Island. Even a hike on the paved routes including the Parkway Trail, Nanaimo Harbourfront Walkway or E&N Trail is a nice outing.

MouNT BENSoN – The mountain provides outdoor enthusiasts with an opportunity to take to the woods only minutes from their doorsteps. Accessible from Witchcraft Lake on Benson View Road or up through the hills above Westwood Lake, the nearly six-hour hike (including a few strenuous portions) round-trip takes you through old growth timber, waterfalls and streams, previously logged areas and views galore along the way. Benson’s view from the summit is spectacular, encompassing the entire Nanaimo River valley.

Eleven kilometres of dirt roads and trails lead through this 111-hectare Nature Trust of B.C. park, providing hikers with platform views, occasional wildlife and the opportunity to push through to Westwood Lake Park and beyond.

wESTwooD lakE – A 6.2-kilometre bark mulch trail around Westwood Lake provides an enjoyable hike with equally enjoyable water views.

wESTwooD riDGES – Situated between Westwood Lake and the slopes of Mount Benson, the Westwood Ridges offer eye-opening views. The trail, while wooded, is not overly strenuous, but does present the occasional challenge with footing.

aMMoNiTE fallS – Tum-

bling down the northwest slope of Mount Benson and draining into Brannen Lake, Benson Creek creates the dramatic Ammonite Waterfalls. Part of a regional park, Ammonite is a series of three drops rushing through a heavy forest that can be reached either off of Jameson Road near Jingle Pot Road.

HiT THE DirT – The Marie Davidson BMX Park has its ups and downs, and that’s a

good thing when it comes to BMX racing. The Nanaimo BMX Association’s track at Beban Park hosted world championship races, yet anyone on two wheels is allowed to use the facility. n Nanaimo, the top of the world must be somewhere around the rafters at the Romper Room indoor climbing centre. Maybe the crest of the climbing wall, eight metres (27 feet) up, isn’t technically the top of the world, but it’s pretty high up there. And yet toddlers as young as two, grandmothers as old as 90, even mild-mannered News Bulletin sports reporters have successfully scaled the walls. “We’re not a bunch of crazy yahoos trying to kill ourselves – it’s safe and fun,” said Aaron Hamilton, who has owned the Romper Room for eight years and has been climbing for 20. Amid the 7,500 square feet of surface area at the Boban Road gym, there are countless climbs, using three basic methods. There is top roping, which is ascending a route while tied to the top. There is the more advanced lead climbing, which is bringing a rope from the bottom and clipping it continually on the way up. Finally, there is bouldering, which involves climbing just a little ways up the wall, without any rope. “You can come in and have a good time at whatever difficulty level suits you,” Hamilton said. “It’s only about you. It’s not about competing with anybody else. Whether you get to the top of the wall or you only make it halfway up, it’s really easy to see your own progression and measure your successes.” There isn’t a lot of know-how or equipment needed to try the sport. Climbing shoes, which intentionally force feet into an arc, might make a beginner feel like Cinderella’s stepsister, but they make for stronger, no-slip footholds. A harness keeps the rope securely attached to the waist. Routes up the wall are marked with degrees of difficulty – 5.6 is the easiest, 5.12-plus is the toughest – then colour coded all the way to the ceiling. Climbers only need to identify the next handhold, push themselves up with their feet, and advance. The handholds might seem a little more precarious near the top, but they aren’t – it’s just fear of heights and that fades into the background as the climber becomes preoccupied. The hardest part might be 10

letting go of the top of the wall for the first time and trusting in the belayer – the person at the other end of the rope – to guide a gentle descent. First-time climbers will need to book an introductory session at least a day in advance, but anyone can come in and go bouldering. The Romper Room offers programs and courses for all ages and skill levels, including outdoor climbing opportunities. There’s always something new at the centre, too. Staff, with the input of other climbers, are continually moving around the holds to create new bouldering ‘problems’ or just to keep things fresh. “The routes we build, the challenges that

we have here are pretty renowned around Canada,” Hamilton said. When he climbs, sometimes he’ll choose a simple route; sometimes, a physical exertion. Sometimes he wants a bouldering brain-teaser; sometimes he climbs to clear his mind. anaimo region’s farmers are opening their gates to tourism, giving the agri-curious a chance to experience what it takes for food to travel from farm to plate. The Nanaimo area has been home to a patchwork of farms and rolling fields for decades, but until recently agriculture hasn’t landed on the map as a tourist attraction. That’s all changed with the growing interest in buying local, making farms, fields and artisan trails a new trend. Farmers are now opening their gates to not only sell homegrown products but the experiences that go with them. For those looking to tour local farms, here’s some top spots to put on the map: Morning Star Bison ranch: Kick off your farm tour on the last Sunday of the month with a visit to Bob Wilson “Buffalo Bob” and his herd of bison. The farmer opens his 96-hectare ranch between June and October to take people for a guided wagon-ride, where people can get up close and personal with bison and their calves, feed the animals and listen to Buffalo Bob’s adventures with bison. Visitors will also be able to learn about the herd and how they are ethically raised. 20

Tours cost $20 for adults and $5 for children over the age of three and are offered between 10 a.m and 6 p.m. After the tour, visit the gift shop or grab a bite to eat at the Yippy Ki’Yeah Cafe concession truck. The ranch is 10 kilometres south of Nanaimo at 1185 Spruston Rd. Hazelwood Herb farm: If you are interested in learning about herbs or picking up chutney and cooking blends, stop in at the Hazelwood farm. Open daily beginning in April, it offers a quarter-acre display garden and gazebo for visitors to explore. Grab a brochure for a self-guided walk or book a group tour and learn about everything from the history of how herbs were used to the way they’re transformed into botanical creams and infusions. A group tour is $35 and for another $2.50 you can end it with tea, cookies or lemon bread in the farm’s orchard. People can also visit the nursery and gift shop. The best months to enjoy the farm at 13576 Adshead Rd. are May through July between 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. fredrich’s Honey farm: Stop in for something sweet at Fredrich’s Honey Farm, which has produced honey on Vancouver Island since 1966. Visitors can peruse honey and pollen products at the gift shop between Wednesday and Sunday or pre-ar-

According to Susie Sirri, director of operations for the Grand Hotel, which looks after the Newcastle pavilion, a swim at Mallard Lake is breathtaking, with scenery comparable to the film Lord of the Rings. “It’s really beautiful, it’s very mystical. Lots of moss hanging off the trees and it’s very serene,” Sirri explains. “There’s never usually anyone around so you feel like you’re the only one there on a movie set.” Typically, the season runs from May until the end of September.

BY KARL YU A visit to Nanaimo can be complemented by trips to three surrounding islands. Gabriola, Newcastle and Protection islands are all a stones throw away from Nanaimo’s harbour and some island hopping can enhance your stay. Gabriola island

A 20-minute ferry ride away, Gabriola Island is known for its thriving arts community and is aptly nicknamed “Isle of the Arts.” However, Lisa Rey, manager of the Gabriola Island Chamber of Commerce, said there’s more to Gabriola. “Our island is kayakers, hikers, beaches, weekend getaways, just the whole beach atmosphere and water sports and fishing and all those real recreational things ... this is a major draw to our island,” Rey said, adding that Gabriola’s population doubles in the summer. Golfers can tee off at Gabriola Golf and Country Club and there is the Concert on the Green, which takes place on Aug. 7. Snuneymuxw First Nation influence can be seen on Gabriola with petroglyphs (rock carvings). Some genuine petroglyphs can be viewed at the island’s United Church and replicas can be seen at Petroglyph Park, near Gabriola Museum. Malaspina Galleries isn’t a gallery per se but rather limestone formations caused by

over a thousand years of erosion. People can stroll through the tunnel-like area and view Nanaimo in the distance. Rey said there are events taking place almost every weekend between May and October. Some notables are the farmers’ market, from Victoria Day long weekend until Thanksgiving, the Gabriola Theatre Festival and Street Fair from Aug. 15 to 17 and the Thanksgiving Studio Tour from Oct. 11 to 13. The round-trip ferry fee from the wharf in downtown Nanaimo to Protection Island is worth it, especially on a summer evening. The sunset on the skyline is the perfect complement to a meal on the Dinghy Dock Pub and Restaurant patio, the only registered floating pub in Canada. Life exists past the Dinghy Dock, according to long-time islander Larry Iwasko, including recreational activities. “There’s volleyball on Sundays at [Pirates Park] and there’s a hard surface playing field at the centre of the island that has basketball hoops and hockey nets and we have the ocean and we have the beach, great recreational facilities,” he said, adding birdwatchers can also observe herons nesting near the ferry dock. 23

Nanaimo’s first bathtub race was a publicity stunt – now it’s internationally renowned.Originally a crazy idea to celebrate Canada’s Centennial and put Nanaimo on the map, the first bathtub races were held in 1967. Now, Nanaimo is the bathtubbing capital of the world and host to the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. On Sunday, July 27, at 11 a.m. sharp, tubbers will race out of Nanaimo Harbour, head up past Schooner Cove and circle Winchelsea Island. The 58-kilometre race ends back in Nanaimo’s Departure Bay where participants have to park their tubs, run up the beach and ring a silver bell. Bathtub and driver combined must weigh a minimum of 350 pounds (158 kilograms) and the boat’s engine can be no more than eight horsepower. Minimum racer age is 14. Three classes run the race: stock, modified and

unlimited. Finish times range from just over one hour to two hours, depending on the class of tub and the weather. The Great International World Championship Bathtub Race is part of the Nanaimo Marine Festival. The four-day festival starts on Friday, July 25 at Maffeo Sutton Park with a kids’

carnival, mainstage entertainment and beer gardens. On Saturday, the Sail Past On Wheels Parade travels through the downtown core, starting at 10:30 a.m., and at night the sky will light up with one of the biggest fireworks displays on Vancouver Island.
