HEALTH & BEAUTY Dandelion roots and leaves Dandelions are one of my favorites, so when they are called a weed it does make me wonder why and how they are known as weed. For a long time herbalists have been using dandelion roots for liver complaints, and in herbal terms its hepatic meaning is a tonic for the liver. If you walk into a health food store you will find dandelion root in many formulas that are recommended for the liver. On the other hand, dandelion leaves are used in formulas aimed for the regulation of blood pressure as it has diuretic properties. This herb is rich in nutrients like vitamin A, B, C, Carotenoids, choline and minerals, especially potassium.

Both the root and the leaf have more or less effects, but the root has a stronger effect on the gall bladder and liver while the leaf has a stronger diuretic effect. One good part of dan-

Dandelion roots and leaves have traditionally been used for cystitis in combination with other herbs such as uva-ursi. This herb, when combined with milk thistle, has beneficial effects, especially the root for restoring liver function. It has mild bitter properties so helps in the digestive system for loss of appetite, flatulence, constipation and bloating. It is also helps in detoxifying the body and is found in herbal preparations aimed at detoxifying the body. I would like to add a word of caution that this herb is used traditionally for jaundice.

However, it is important to know the cause of the jaundice and therefore a health care practitioner must be consulted before taking it.

Dandelions can cause allergies in some, and it is contraindicated in people who have obstruction of bile ducts, gall stones, cholyecystitis or intestinal obstruction.

Some animal studies have shown anti tumor activity. As well, if one is not allergic to this herb the juice of the leaves can help in reducing age spots.

Spring is here and dandelions can be seen everywhere. The question is: should they be eaten? Well, I feel if they are away from traffic pollution, pets or other animals and their droppings, or pesticides, then they can be washed and used to make teas rather than eating them raw. The best dandelions are those you grow in a vegetable garden or are grown organically in fields, especially from a health perspective.

Chiropractic for kids is safe, effective I recently had the pleasure (and honour) to provide wellness adjustments to the young children of one of our many regular families in our office. While the little ones were being adjusted, their mom consented to my staff taking some pictures to post on our Harbourfront Family Chiropractic Facebook page.

We post these fun pictures to show how gentle and simple it is to care for the health/wellness of our local families.

While this is a daily occurrence in my practice, I was later contacted by this mom because she said someone in her circle of friends did not understand chiropractic, yet still had an opinion that chiropractic for kids was unsafe and/or unnecessary.

While this mom understands and appreciates how chiropractic benefits the health of her children, she was seeking more information to forward to her friend concerning the safety of chiropractic kids.

I replied by sending a series of links to articles on the icpa4kids. org website that addresses all of these topics. I also strongly encourage interested readers to go to the page icpa4kids.org/ Chiropractic-Research where you will find many studies supporting the efficacy and safety of chiropractic care for children.

For anyone who has never witnessed a pediatric chiropractor adjust an infant, I thought I would explain.

Initially a comprehensive history and examination is completed with the parents of the infant/ child. I then fully explain in detail what I’m going to do and how I’m going to perform the care required for their child.

The first part of treatment is a series of cranio-sacral releases to help balance and restore proper shape and function of the child’s cranial bones. This involves the baby laying on their back while I

place my hand under their head and spine. Gentle pressure equivalent to what you would use to determine the ripeness of a tomato is used to release restrictions in the cranial sutures and spine.

Following this, I determine the location of any spinal subluxations (nervous system interference/misalignment).

If an adjustment is indicated, I use an “integrator” (adjusting instrument) on its lightest setting to free up the problem area (subluxation). Both cranio-sacral and integrator adjustments are so gentle that most infants will continue sleeping through the whole process.

Adjusting babies and children is so rewarding because of how quickly they respond to chiropractic care.

Since babies do not normally have the emotional and chemical stresses that their parents may encounter, their stresses are mostly of a physical nature (birth trauma), and have not had sufficient time to settle into their body.

What generally motivates parents to bring a child to me is symptoms, e.g. colic, constipation, sleeping disorders, ear infections, reflux, asthma and behavioral issues.

Removing stress from their spine and nervous system ensures healthy development of their rapidly changing body and quickly resolves the symptoms that initially brought them through our door.

This in turn creates a healthy happy child that is free to interpret/absorb his/her surroundings without any nervous system interference.

The cozy community of Canoe

Part of the City of Salmon Arm, yet a bit separate in distance, the community of Canoe has its own appeal. I don’t know how it received its name, but one imagines the Canadian symbol of the humble watercraft must figure in somehow.

And then there is the Canoe brand plywood from Canoe Forest Products Ltd. Since 1965 premium quality plywood has been making its way around the world. Many times I’ve seen with pride the Canoe brand wrappers on trains rolling across the country. Federated Co-operatives used to own the plywood plant, but in 2012 the Gorman Bros. family of companies out of Westbank, BC bought Canoe Forest Products and the other Co-op assets at Canoe.

Federated ran a sawmill for many years, but it closed in 2007 due to poor market conditions.

It’s not the first industry to fade away. A fruit packing plant built in 1946 is only a memory now.

Canoe currently has several successful businesses and attractions, including some light manufacturing, a golf course, motels, restaurants, marina and wharf. Canoe also has the main beach for Salmon Arm residents and visitors, which is very popular in the summer season. With facilities such as a long sandy beach, change rooms and washrooms, a concession, picnic tables, shady trees and grass, covered shelter, roped off swimming area, boat launch and volleyball court, there is plenty to keep one occupied on a hot summer day. I have some stand out memories of visits to Canoe Beach, including a day when many anxious eyes scanned the sky to view increasing smoke from a growing forest fire in the Skimikin area. I expect many residents have their own special memories of days at Canoe Beach. Although there have been changes, such as the high tech water treatment facility located nearby, the beach remains a Salmon Arm gem.

by Wendy Clay extensive trail system at Park Hill offers numerous loops for walking or cycling through pleasant forest land. If you haven’t been there yet, check it out. The Park Hill Trail map is available at www.salmonarm.ca/DocumentCenter/ View/23.

Canoe is also home to the Shuswap Association for Rowing and Paddling (SARP), which promotes and assists people of all ages in the enjoyment of fun, healthy watercraft recreation. Their boats include dragon boats, outrigger canoes and kayaks. Waterfront property leased from the City of Salmon Arm at Canoe Beach contains a boat storage compound and shelter. Canoe is a pleasant mix of old and new buildings and houses. One day I cycled most of the streets in Canoe, looking at the old and new. It looked like a cozy, comfortable community, in touch with the past, yet living in the present, with an eye to the future. Only a seven minute drive from downtown Salmon Arm, many Canoe residents make the commute downtown to work. When asked where they are from, they usually say Canoe, an obvious indication of Canoe’s special identity.

And if you want to watch or partake in a special event that can include an actual canoe, check out the annual Beat the Train Triathlon which usually takes place in June. After a cycle ride, it involves running from Salmon Arm to Canoe and then paddling back to the Salmon Arm wharf and the finish line. Now that’s a double ‘Canoe’ experience!

DANCING BEAR, ERNIE PHILIP DOCUMENTARY A 90-minute feature film on the life of Ernie Philip was screened at Salmon Arm’s Okanagan College on the afternoon of April 29th. The classroom was filled to honour the 84-year-old elder of the Shuswap Nation who lives in Tappen, and to see the film about his life.

Brian Sumner, producer, said it wasn’t easy for Ernie to revisit painful thoughts and memories of being taken from his family and put in the Kamloops Residential School. He was there for eight years, from age eight to 16. Thousands of native children from across Canada were taken from their homes in an effort to break them of their language and traditions. They suffered physical, psychological and sexual abuse. If the film caused anyone present to be affected emotionally by the film, there were two counsellors at the back of the room who were available after the screening.

Before the film, Ernie said a prayer in Shuswap and English. Much of the film is about Ernie’s dancing. He won many awards, and danced in many countries. The film will be put on a DVD for purchase from the website www.dancingbear.info. Some day CBC-TV may show it.

Part of the funding came from Residential School Healing and Reconciliation Society. See many pictures from the film on the website.

COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR AT McGUIRE LAKE Tomorrow is the deadline to book a table at the first Teddy Bear Hospital and Community Health Fair fundraiser for the Shuswap Hospice Society. The fair will be located on the east end of McGuire Lake, the hospital end, by the little bridge. The booth fee is $75 and includes a six-foot table. The fair will be held on Sunday, June 1st, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine. BC TO REVIEW TENANCY LAWS THAT MAY TRAP WOMEN IN BAD RELATIONSHIPS B.C.’s tenancy laws often stop women from fleeing domestic violence. Women’s groups are proposing an exception in abuse cases. Under current laws, tenants who break fixed-term housing leases must pay their landlord the balance of remaining rent in their contract and may be forced to pay for advertising to find a tenant to replace them. It involves a third-party verifier – such as a lawyer, victim assistance counsellor or transition house staff-person – confirming that the person needs to flee an abusive situation. Similar reforms have already taken place in Quebec, Manitoba and Nova Scotia. According to Statistics Canada, B.C.’s domestic violence rates are higher than the rest of Canada’s.

NEIGHBOUR DISPUTES CAN LEAVE YOU LIVING IN CONDO HELL: MACLEAN’S The April 25, 2014 Maclean’s magazine has a very long article on condo living. If you cannot find it at www. macleans.ca, you can read it at the library because it keeps back copies of magazines.

The writer says a condo is kind of a cross between a private house and an apartment. Disagreements sometimes blow up into big, bitter battles because of the way condo living is structured. The writer explains that mini governments are formed, called strata councils, and in some cases, they work. But in others, they become like little dictatorships.

In Salmon Arm, condos do not have thousands of apartments for a council to manage, as in bigger cities, and council members work to enforce the bylaws, rules and regulations in order for the condo to keep its value for the owners.

ORGANIC PORK CHOPS ARE THE BEST! I bought frozen chicken, beef and pork at the organic market on April 30. The animals were born to healthy mothers who ate organic feed and the babies were not injected with hormones and antibiotics.

I cooked the pork chops first because my mouth was watering for pork, especially the fat on the long edge.

They cost $16 for a package with two large, thick chops.

They were $8 each, and each was sufficient for two granny-sized meals. They were delicious, just like the pork chops at the farm where I was raised near Watson, Sask.

Our pigs were raised on chop and slops. Organic, of course!

SASKATCHEWAN UNION OF NURSES HAS INITIATED A WEAR-WHITE CAMPAIGN When I was an RN I was so proud to wear a white nurse’s uniform with its starched white cap, crisp white uniform, white stockings and matching shoes. Polyester dresses were welcomed, and then the more comfortable white polyester pant suits. In time, RNs stopped wearing caps.

Today, you’re more likely to find a nurse in Mickey Mouse scrubs or yoga pants, and wearing running shoes.

Nursing became casual and patients could not identify a registered nurse. Now some licenced practical nurses in Ontario and the Maritimes, and the nurse’s union in Saskatchewan are making the case for a return to standardized uniforms. I say hooray!

It was such a small organization in North Vancouver, I believe, that I wasn’t issued a number, and the cost was $5. Now, as my kids look around Victoria at all the aging population, my executor son asked for my Memorial Society number. Well, I didn’t have one. So I went online and applied for one. With the number they also sent forms to fill about my wishes for my funeral. I see a membership costs $40 now.

Funeral providers may not realize that you are a member of the society and qualify for a discount. The family must advise the society at the time of death by calling 1-888-8165902. I WAS ASKED FOR MY FUNERAL WISHES The Memorial Society sent me two copies of an arrangement form. One is to be filled and returned to the society.

Well, my first choice is a green burial. My body would be put in a cardboard box, placed in a hole in a green burial cemetery, covered, and a tree planted instead of a headstone placed. But there is only one green burial site in BC. Enderby looked at the possibility, but it didn’t get past council.

I want an open casket funeral service so people would be sure it was me in there. And I’d want to be sprinkled with holy water and have lots of incense waved over me so I’d get to heaven faster.

Son-number-one would be the celebrant because he is a lay chaplain in the Unitarian Church and has the authority to marry and bury people.

If I am cremated, I want my ashes to be put in a cardboard box that once held chocolates, so my ashes would smell of delicious chocolate. I want my ashes to be buried at the foot of my kid brother’s grave in the Ukrainian Orthodox cemetery at Watson, Sask., or scattered over Shuswap Lake from a boat, or used as fertilizer in one of the City of Salmon Arm’s beautiful flower beds and planters.

What I like & dislike about Baja California II

Okay, okay, Daron and the Lakesnore News are even more desperate for drivel than I anticipated, so let’s carry on with what I like and dislike about Baja California. This series of articles is aimed at snowbirds and younger folks who want to buy prime winter vacation property while it’s still inexpensive.

To recap: I like Mexico’s pay-as-you-go medical system that gives you same-day appointment with specialists and next-week appointments for surgeries that require long waits in Canada. I also like the weather in Baja, which is perfect, and I like the food, which is fresh, inexpensive, and available everywhere in abundance.

What do I dislike? The local folks speak a weird language called Spanish and it’s difficult to understand them. I’m kidding of course, but it brings up a key point: The Baja is the part of Mexico that is most Americanized and many of the locals speak some English. But if you plan to spend long sojourns in any Latin American country, you’ll feel much more comfortable if you learn a little Spanish.

In Salmon Arm this is best accomplished through one of Caleb Espinosa’s evening classes.

Another thing I like is that it’s easy to get there.

From November to April, WestJet runs a direct flight from Kelowna to Los Cabos every Saturday.

It leaves at 6:30 in the morning, which is inconvenient, but you can be there in four hours. Most other days you can get there in six hours by flying through Calgary. The flight isn’t expensive. I usually pay about $350 each way unless it’s close to Christmas, when all the airlines jack up their prices.

Buying Baja vacation properties is easy. As you would expect, prices vary. You can pick up a two-bedroom condo on the high-priced Cabo corridor for about the same price you’d pay here. A two-bedroom house in a Mexican barrio can be had for less than $50,000, though you will probably find it a bit too noisy. Many Canadian and American snowbirds are buying rural lots on or near the coast to the north of the tourist cities of Cabo St. Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

San Lucas, you can buy a half-acre ocean-view lot for $40,000 or less. You won’t have services for a few years, but it’s hard to beat as an investment.

The Mexican entrepreneur building a house next to mine puts it this way: “Wow! This is just like Cancun thirty years ago!” Dozens of snowbirds are buying these lots and either building homes or outfitting the property with a septic tank so they can park their motor home there for the winter.

This brings me to one of the things I don’t like about Mexico, the fideicomiso. Several decades ago the Mexican government, in a fit of anti-Americanism, passed a law forbidding foreigners from owning land within 50 kilometres of the coast. It didn’t take long for folks to find a way around the law: a renewable long-term lease. Technically the bank holds the deed to your property and leases it to you for a modest fee (mine is $360 year). There are no restrictions. You can sell your property any time, build on it, or rent it, so the fideicomiso is equivalent to the fee simple ownership we have in Canada. The annoying feature is that it costs $6,000 in legal fees to set it up.

Realizing that this seriously discourages real estate sales to Canadians and American retirees, the Mexican government recently tried to abolish the fedeicomiso, but the howls of protest from the banks and lawyers who make big bucks from the thing resulted in the abolition being defeated in the senate.

You can own property in Mexico, but the set-up charges are similar to those you’d encounter buying property in British Columbia, where the property transfer tax and the Development Cost Charges are likely to set you back at least $5,000.

On the flip side, Mexican property taxes are substantially lower those in Canada (mine are $60 a year). But that’s another boring article. Surely you don’t want to read more!

New adventure tour company Byron Noble (above) has turned his hobby (an obsession for life outdoors) into a working lifestyle and has started up an adventure tour company called Noble Adventures that will operate year-round. He offers half and full-day wine tours in the Shuswap and North Okanagan, a full-day Farm Adventure, featuring four local farms varying from dairy, agriculture to honey bees, and a tour of R.J. Haney Heritage Village.

For more information on the festival: www.SAOW.ca New owners at the Brick The Brick in Salmon Arm has new owners, Brad and Kathleen Honey (below). Brad’s hometown is Victoria but he’s lived all over BC, and Kathleen is from Chilliwack.

Originally Brad wanted to be an architect, and took one year at BCIT. But life got in the way and he ended up with an unlikely job. As he was working at a pool supply place in Victoria, he answered an ad regarding a managerial position. They asked him if he would like a job selling furniture, dry goods and groceries up north.

“I said up north like Prince George?” They said, ‘No, north like Inuvik.’ I said, ‘Where’s that?’... “It shares the Arctic Ocean - when can you start?’”

On January 9, 1990 he was having a golf game with his buddies in Victoria; the next day he was in Edmonton.

“I had never been in minus 25 degrees. The coldest I had ever experienced was -5.”

Despite the isolation and the hardship, Brad managed to work for the Bay’s northern division for 5 years. In that time he met Kathleen who was working at a store in the tiny village of Aklavik, NWT. Eventually they moved back south, married and had three sons: Matt (21), Jordan (16), and Bruce (14). They spent time in Prince George and Fort St. John where Brad earned the distinction of being a top notch salesman with his knowledge of the product and customer service at the Brick.

When the opportunity came for them to buy the Salmon Arm store they jumped at it, and are already enjoying what the Shuswap has to offer. They love the laid-back lifestyle, going out for wings at the Hideaway and riding their motorbikes on Sunday, which is their only day off.

When she’s at home Kathleen loves sitting in her sunroom “staring at the lake and mountains.” She likes crocheting, cross stitching and collects antique glass.

Brad is a total Canucks fan and, although he likes watching hockey with Kathleen, he says she talks during the game, and that’s his only complaint.

The store is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Says Brad, “There’s new product, new staff and an entire new attitude.”

Letters to the Editor

Bogus beliefs

I find it interesting that many letters from local people come to this editor advocating nonsensical ideas.

First: all those “chemical trails” in the sky are claimed to come from mysterious military planes. If true, no wonder the Canadian military is so broke, paying for all those flights. This in spite of the military not even having that many planes. Also, how do people travel from one city to another if all those planes are military, not passenger planes. A person with a normal high school ability should easily be able to disprove this claim with real evidence.

Another: vaccines are claimed to be so dangerous by people giving the illusion they are informed, yet we are in the middle of a measles epidemic effecting hundreds of unvaccinated people. A few children now have permanent disabilities because of decisions their parents made, and some through no fault of their parents. Back to the bad old days we go.

Another example: millions of scientists around the world (and of many different religions) are claimed to all be duped somehow and wrong in their work, and all the physical evidence is wrong. How could it be possible that so many different people have all been fooled? Is it really just because they do not misinterpret the Bible the way a few

people do?

Another example: glaciers are melting, the pack ice at the north pole is receding, temperatures and storm intensity and patterns are increasing, plants and animals are changing locations and living patterns, etc., but we are supposedly not experiencing global warming.

These changes are all supposed to be “normal;” the earth went through it before. How did people survive it before? Oh, people did not exist then.

That was many millions of years ago. (“Oh no, we believe the earth was only made a few thousand years ago, so now what do we say?”)

Cancer link The presentations given by three local physicians recently on heart disease, diabetes and cancer were very helpful and informative.

However, the information from the Canadian Cancer Society, as stated in their brochure ‘Reducing Your Risk of Breast Cancer,’ says that abortion is not a risk factor for breast cancer. And this in spite of numerous recognized studies, published in medical journals, that clearly show that abortion is a contributing risk factor for breast cancer. At least 60 significant studies published since 1963 report a link between surgical abortion and premature birth.

At full term, pregnancy helps protect the breast from becoming cancerous. Interruption of pregnancy before 32 weeks, the mother’s

Notice the pattern? I notice two things. First, life seems to be getting too complex for some people to comprehend, so they have to resort to various beliefs. The internet has a wealth of rationalizations to support any nonsense you want to believe. And, these people will consider no evidence of any kind that might conflict with their beliefs.

Second, advocacy and denial groups all work in about the same way. First they find some minor “fact”, true or not, out of context is better. Then they blow the details up into something that appears to be major. Then, most importantly, they make their claims only to a lay audience. A professional audience would know the real evidence and would laugh at them or just ignore them. Lastly, they try to scare everyone, preferably with some kind of conspiracy theory. Very effective against a lay audience. That is not to say all conspiracy theories are wrong (my favourites are true), nor that all professional claims are correct all the time; they are not. However, people and groups with nonsensical ideas do not use the evidence to form their beliefs.

Instead, the evidence is selectively chosen to justify their preconceived belief.

So, more evidence will change no minds. Their beliefs are treated as superior to all evidence, and so no evidence is capable of contradicting their beliefs, as some letters have shown. I am not sure our more modern educated society is getting everyone any further ahead.

Tennis open house a success in spite of weather Many, many thanks to the volunteers who put on a spectacular event last Saturday. Despite the rainy weather, we had a very large turnout as we huddled under the canopies and in the clubhouse to enjoy a delicious breakfast. earest Mom, on this Mother’s Day, let me tell you how much I admire and love you. Like most children, I haven’t always been very nice to you. I have often taken you for granted without recognizing everything you have done for me.

Today I am older and wiser and I can see what a thankless task being a mother can be. I ask you to forgive me for all those times when I wasn’t deserving of you.

It’s due in large part to your efforts that I have become the person I am today.

Now that I have reached the age of responsibility, I’m beginning to

realize just how much work is involved in raising a family as you have done. For all the sacrifices you have made, the strength of character and composure you have shown, I raise my hat to you. I regret all the times I was angry with you for saying no to me. I know now that it is much more difficult to say no rather than yes.

I can never be grateful enough for all the good advice you gave me between two loads of washing, advice which I still use today.

Sun List: keeping damaging rays out I am assuming spring is on the way. It’s May, for heaven’s sake, and I’m still wearing my winter jacket on the morning kitty-walk.

At least we know spring will eventually get here and with it comes our friend/enemy the sun. Lots of sun. So much sun it can create rug shadows on the floor, disintegrate the curtain fibres, bleach the upholstery and drive the air conditioning costs way, way up.

In light of the current interest in “Life Lists,” here is this year’s Sun List. Each one of these solutions will save you money in the long run.

1. Get any carpets with rubber, latex, Isoprene, or elastomer backing off the floors. (Check the labels.) They will damage vinyl for sure, but the sun can accelerate the chemical reaction that causes the floor to yellow and can colour other flooring surfaces besides vinyl.

2. Add removable blackout liners to existing curtains and drapery.

Get pre-made ones or call someone (like me) to custom make yours.

3. Use screw-less drapery brackets and install temporary blackout curtains over your blinds or shades.

4. Get solar film applied to your windows. Even high-efficiency windows will not stop enough of

5. If you are buying new blinds or shades, make sure the edge gap is minimal and spend the extra to get the room-darkening backing. A 1/8-inch gap on a 36 x 48-inch blind equals a hole of 12 square inches in your coverage.

6. Sun-blocking window coverings are 30% more effective when hung inside the window as opposed to outside. I can’t think of a better reason to forego the bamboo or heavy metal roller shades.

7. Invest in some shade cloth curtains for your balcony if it is unusable during the peak sun periods.

This cloth can be cut and installed without any sewing, won’t fray or rip easily, comes in a whack of colours and can block up to 90% of the UV rays while allowing viewthrough. Call me for sources.

And one last thing: A room painted a cool colour can feel up to 15 degrees cooler than a room painted a warm colour. Trick yourself with a blue place mat or table cloth; use a cool blue and yellow coffee cup.

Take me out to the ball game During my 10-year-old daughter’s baseball practice I made a quick trip to Starbucks, where I bought myself an overpriced chai tea latte. Arriving back at the park it was announced that I was just in time for a game – parents against kids.

“That’s okay, I’ll just watch,” I said, holding up my venti-sized cup. “This was five bucks.”

“I’ll give you the five bucks,” the coach responded. “Now grab a glove.”

“But I’m afraid of the ball,” I said earnestly, trying to appeal to his compassionate side. It didn’t work.

“Get out there, Welbourne,” he barked. “You’re playing.”

“If I can do it you can too,” one of my friends said empathetically.

Other parents and kids chimed in as well.

“Come on Mom,” my daughter hollered. “It’ll be fun!”

I knew it wouldn’t be, but the peer pressure, combined with the request from Daisy quickly wore me down. I reluctantly did as I was told and walked out somewhere near the third base. I prayed to the baseball gods that the hard little round thing wouldn’t come

anywhere near me.

Thankfully, it didn’t at first. The ball kept going up the middle toward a couple of grandparents. Watching them run for it and trying their best helped me connect with the “if I can do it, you can too” sentiment.

My friend, who was also nervous about playing, was making an effort as well. Whenever the ball came near her she’d cry out “oh no, oh no,” but she’d still try to catch it. At this point in the game, I hadn’t had much to do but sneak

sips of my tea.

When the ball finally came whipping in my direction it flew right at me and almost landed in my glove before I realized what was happening. If only I’d been paying more attention, I thought to myself, when it bounced off the inside of my borrowed mitt. All I had to do was close my hand and I would have caught the darn thing.

After that I decided to stop worrying that the ball might come towards me and I started to expect that it would. I even envisioned myself catching it.

But just as I began to feel semi-confident that I could do this, the kids ran out to the field and it was the parents’ turn at bat.

Walking up to the home plate, I thought about the last time I played softball almost 20 years ago. I had joined a beer league team because my husband, who was my athletic baseball player boyfriend at the time, thought it would be an enjoyable thing to do together. It wasn’t. Not for me anyway.

The team was so competitive that many of the players would get mad when someone messed up, and I made mistakes all the time.

Sharp Shooters score The Shuswap Sharp Shooters girl’s U11 development soccer team remained undefeated this weekend after a strong showing in Vernon.

In the first game, the girls defeated a skilled Penticton team 1-0 with Jordan King scoring the lone goal off a wellplaced strike from the right wing.

Brooklyn Davidson, Laura Hall, Holly McCaskell, Lys Milne and Jannae Bocking were all outstanding on defense; Julia Hart and Braidy Parkes shared the shutout in goal while Phoebe Barnes dominated the middle of the field all game long.

Alanna O’dell, Sophia Ruckle and Gabriella Torrie were strong up front for Shuswap.

In the second game of the day, the Sharp Shooters played a very physical Kamloops squad to a 2-2 tie.

Milne scored first for Shuswap with a skilled one-time shot off a beautiful cross from King. Parkes scored the second goal off another cross from King in this hard fought game.

The Sharp Shooters play next this Sunday in Kelowna.

How appropriate! We have a day set aside to honour our mothers.

What does the word ‘mother’ bring to your mind? Have you had a loving, caring mother who brings pleasant memories to your mind? You are blessed.

Maybe you had a mother who was not always there for you, and consequently your memories are not pleasant. Maybe you do not even know your biological mother. But have you had someone who you called Mom? Did she love you and care for you, pack your lunch for you and send you off with a kiss? Did she cook for you and wash your clothes and remember your birthday? Honour Mom. Thank God for her.

The word ‘honour’ in the text means to respect greatly, regard highly or to adore.

Do you have reason to honour your mother? By all means, you do. While your circumstances may vary, your mother still carried you close to her heart and finally suffered the pain to bring you into the world. She sacrificed herself to give you life.

Our text verse is one of the few commands in scripture to children, whether 6 years old or 60. Obey the command and God will bless you for that obedience.

To all you mothers out there who face the daily tasks of bearing and raising children, this comes as a gentle reminder to you: give your children a reason to honour you. Thank God for your children. You give them a powerful send off by doing that.

Commit your own life to Christ and teach your children to love Him also. Guard them as tender plants until they are old enough to make good choices. Water your little ones with buckets of love. The world needs faithful mothers!

Playing parents against kids was a completely different experience, though.

And just knowing my daughter was on the field watching me go up to bat made me want to swing to see what would happen. Who knows? Maybe I’d actually hit it.

Shockingly, I did. On the first pitch I swung and hit the ball so hard and so fast it went flying right out of the ballpark, and with cheering fans and bases loaded I got a home run.

Just kidding. There were no fans and I have no idea if anyone was on base. I hit the thing just past the pitcher, anxiously ran to first base and prayed I wouldn’t trip, break a nail or get whacked in the head with the ball. Once I reached the plate my excited little girl ran in from outfield and gave me a high five.

“Way to go Mom!” she yelled. “You did it!”

It felt good to get a hit and make Daisy proud, but I knew she would have been pleased no matter what. It wasn’t about my performance, but my participation. I have now bought my own glove.

Six arts and culture organizations serving communities throughout the Shuswap have been awarded $88,416 in BC Arts Council grants, Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo announced recently.

“We have a thriving and vibrant artistic community here in the Shuswap,” said MLA Greg Kyllo. “From the Roots and Blues Festival to our wonderful heritage museums we are a destination for cultural enthusiasts from throughout B.C. I am very happy to see this funding go to some great organizations in communities’ large and small and Greg Kyllo truly helping build a stronger and more diverse Shuswap.”

The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society will receive $20,000 to fund operating activities for the 22nd Annual Roots and Blues Festival being held this August 15, 16 and 17, 2014. The operational funding totalling $56,416 will be provided to the Enderby and District Arts Council, Shuswap District Arts Council the Salmon Arm Museum and Heritage Association, and the Eagle Valley Arts Council will to assist in the delivery in these organizations services to the community. Lastly, in Grindrod the Runaway Moon Theatre Arts Society will receive $12,000 in funding to deliver a public art program connecting food, culture and season indicators for the benefit of the community.

Returning from a fishing trip on the mighty Fraser River, a short while ago, I decided to take the Fraser Canyon route. It had significant meaning, as I had worked up and down the canyon for nine years as a Dept. of Highways sign man, staying in many motels and dining in a variety of restaurants. Yale had changed a bit, with more RV spots, and the big sturgeon hole just up from the Yale tunnel looked enticing. Just below Yale was Hill’s Bar, where, on a small gold claim, Hill hit it big. Old Native dry rack salmon poles clung to rocky outcrops above the surging riverbank, and the original Alexandra bridge, constructed by the royal engineers, had been blocked off by cement posts. One highlight, was to see the Hell’s Gate Air Tram busy. The lodge close by was in rough shape, as was the Charles Hotel in Boston Bar. A trip over to North Bend on a wide cement /steel bridge, took minutes, as opposed to the large, often swinging in the wind steel cage that we used to cross the river. At one point many years ago, there was a charge for use of the cage. A roll of tickets found while rummaging around the old sign shack showed pigs - 5 cents, sheep - 5 cents, folks - 10 cents, horses - 20 cents, etc.

Lytton: once a shabby little town, its front street is now neat and tidy and its storefronts restored. While working there on a survey crew, years before, we’d all gather in the basement of the Legion on a Wednesday night to watch a movie; R.C.M.P., nurses, Natives and general town folk.

Little Bobby ran the government liquor store, where we would sneak into the back at closing time and he’d drop a case of beer on the floor, and we would be the benefactors of the rest of the unbroken bottles. Bobby had been a horse jockey in his younger years, then got to run the store at Lytton; later, he would run the one at Lillooet on Thursdays.

‘Watch for elk’ signs alongside the highway indicated that the herd must be doing well; it had started from two loads of cows, bulls and calves from Jasper Park many years before. I originally placed the signs below Lytton in winter as a small herd targeted a Native farmer’s corralled hay stack. The big bull would work the poles apart with his antlers. After he threatened to shoot the bull, the farmer was compensated for hay loss.

Winding through the narrow Thompson rapid curves near the Nicomen underpass, transport trucks and RV traffic slowed, as the Thompson River surged and boiled its way to the Fraser River at Lytton. At least twice a winter, and with an ice-covered highway, we would close the road between Spences Bridge and Lytton because the transport trucks were piling up at the Nicomen underpass. At times it became dangerous, as truckers would remove barricades

Spences Bridge has gone downhill, with closed businesses and cafes, even including garages. One saving grace is the market garden potential of the area; farmers there grow the best tomatoes and apricots in the country.

Steelhead angling has been in turmoil for years, with the genetically large strain declining. We would stop the sign truck specifically just to watch Guy Woods–prolific steel header and president of the Steelhead society at the time– land a trophy fish, his yellow Labrador dog at his side. A cairn commemorates his passing in a little park by the river.

One major concern I witnessed while travelling the route was the steady increase of tanker cars filled with bitumen and other dangerous cargo carried by both CP and CN. One train had 65 tanker cars! After CN’s dismal record of derailments and spills, both at the Cheakamus River in the canyon; and in Alberta, and the derailment recently of coal into Burnaby Lake, and another into Silver Creek. I hate to think what a spill would do into the Thompson River or Fraser for that matter! After all, both rivers have the wold’s largest salmon runs. Tanker trucks also have their issues, as exemplified by the recent wreck and spill near Princeton.

Here and there in the Shuswap As we go about our daily routines each day, we give little thought to how our goods have arrived at the supermarket, or the hardware store, even all the garden soils we love to get our hands on to start working the garden plot.

Thousands of tons of material, lumber, and machinery are hauled by semi transport trucks on the road, every day and night. But the bottom line for rail transport presently is grain/wheat/oil. As 20 to 30 trains a day move along improved track to increase tonnage, there is bound to be a disaster at some point. Is a pipeline the answer? According to Barbara Yaffe’s opinion column in the Vancouver Sun, the safest way to transport oil is by pipeline. We already have 825, 000 kilometres of pipe in the ground. The Trans Mountain pipeline, although over 50 years old, runs right under our noses, by Monte Lake and Kamloops. Now owned by Kinder Morgan, an American company, they want to twin the line. The right-of-way exists, and with modern technology and better steel, it could be possible to have a safe line. This is where corporate greed gets in the way, with more volume and more tanker traffic.

Hydro power: the BC Premier and BC Hydro insist Site “C” on the Peace River is the answer for more power for the people. England, with triple the population, has huge fields of solar power stations, including wind turbines.

Maybe it’s just time to let it all go by and go fishin’!

Mary Margaret Marriott (nee Littler) Mary was born in Prince George on February 13, 1932 and passed away peacefully in Salmon Arm on April 20, 2014 after 82 years of living an interesting life in BC. She was predeceased by her first husband Ronald H. Marriott in 1971, her eldest son Cal Ron in 1998 and her second husband Emdon C. Dykeman in 2009. Mary is survived by her daughter Joan and her sons Don and Len and her children’s families. Mary is remembered by her second husband’s five children and their families. Mary leaves behind many friends from her teaching career in Enderby and her sheepfarming avocation in Falkland.

On April 24, 2014 the private graveside ceremony Mary requested was held with Reverend Dan Meakes officiating; interment followed in the Armstrong Spallumcheen Cemetery. An open house style celebration of life will be held at the Hullcar Hall, 4195 Hullcar Rd., Armstrong on Saturday May 31, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for Mary’s friends and acquaintances to join her family and extended family.

Mary’s children greatly appreciate the care given to Mary at Mount Ida Mews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favourite cause or the Heart and Stroke Fund.

Earl Thomas Irvin It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend on May 1, 2014, a beautiful warm sunny day in Salmon Arm, BC at the age of 78 years. Earl had been a resident of Grindrod, BC for many years.

Earl started his working career at CP Rail at the coast; later becoming self-employed and owning a lawn care business also at the coast.

On settling in Grindrod, Earl worked for the Birchdale Golf Course, Grindrod and later as night watchman for Paragon Wood Products.

Earl leaves behind his beloved friends Trina and David Peacock and their family as well as his three children, Karen Lee Bradley, Clay Irvin and Derek Irvin.

Donations and bequests are requested for equipment to help care for patients and residents of the Hospital and Bastion Place

Trina and David wish to thank the doctors and staff of Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Shuswap lake General Hospital, and especially Mt. Ida Mews, Salmon Arm for all their continued care and support shown toward Earl.

Together they also wish to thank their close friends and family; your support, thoughtfulness and friendship will always be treasured.

Lily and Joey Cornforth enjoy the new amphitheatre space at Carlin Elementary Middle School during buddy reading time Tuesday. The PAC, with generous donations of time and equipment from Corey and Ivy Matheson, Carmen Massey, and Ray Heare, and the financial support of a grant from the CSRD, recently built a beautiful outdoor amphitheatre that can be used as a learning space. The amphitheatre is built into the hillside in the back of the school, out of rock sourced in the Shuswap to make it blend into our natural surroundings.

One of the first rodeos of the season, and one of Canada’s oldest, the Falkland Stampede’s 96th annual event takes place on the May long weekend – May 16, 17 & 18. Three days of exciting pro rodeo action, with cowboys and cowgirls from the US, Alberta, Sask., BC, and other places, competing for some $40,000 in prize money. Northcott Rodeo will once again supply the bucking stock, including some of the animals they had at the C.F.R. in Edmonton: Saddle Bronc Horse, Get Smart - 2 times Horse of the Year, Dark Side and Charley Horse. For the bulls, you will see Black Jack, Risky Remedy and Moccasin Bead. An added attraction this year will be the Pony Chuck Wagon Races and an outdoor trade show, featuring some 30 exhibitors of tack, log furniture, jewelry, art and local businesses, coordinated by Doug Carlson for the Falkland Community Association. Also featured will be a horse training presentation by Doug Mills.

The show is open all three days from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with refreshments available. A Cowboy Church Service takes place on Sunday at 11:00 a.m., hosted by Rob Dinwoodie. There will be a parade on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., and we expect the traffic will be congested for the parade to go to the rodeo grounds. There will be a pancake breakfast downtown all three days, and dances on Saturday and Sunday nights with a western band. A heavy horse pull happens on Monday at 10 a.m.. We will have country music playing downtown, and will announce the parade there also. There will be a great variety of food vendors on the grounds, along with a beverage garden. There will be a souvenir booth at the trade show, with a variety of goods. Ample parking will be available.

Admission is as follows: adults $15.00, students 6-15 and seniors $12.00, and children under 6 are free. We are fortunate to have one of Canada’s top rodeo announcers, Les McIntyre, in attendance for all three days. We are proud of our little town to be able to continue to put on a three day pro rodeo, and want to thank our sponsors, you loyal rodeo fans for your support, and also to all our dedicated volunteers, we thank you. With the weatherman co-operating, we are looking forward to a great Stampede weekend!
