The CVRD toilet rebate program will help residents use water more efficiently. Replacing a 13 litre toilet with a dual flush toilet or high-efficiency (4.8 or less) toilet could reduce indoor water use by approximately 18 per cent. Homes with older 20 litre flush toilets could experience even larger reductions. Only high efficiency (4.8 litre or less) and dual flush toilets are eligible. A maximum of two toilets rebates per installation address, including those toilets rebates received under the 2009-2013 programs, will be accepted.

Old toilets must be taken to the Comox Valley waste management centre (2400 Pidgeon Lake Road, Cumberland) for the proper disposal and date-stamped receipt.

Nudists Beware: modern window films are invisible! It could be the best home improvement you never see – or one that tricks your clothing-averse neighbours into putting on a show you wish you hadn’t seen. Window film has been around forever, but it’s only quite recently that its popularity has skyrocketed. A thin, transparent polyester coating, window film can keep the sun’s UV rays from bleaching flooring and furnishings as well as provide dramatic insulating effects in both summer and winter. “Many of us associate window film with either a really dark, sleazy limousine tint or a super-reflective mirror finish,” says Dave Barlow, who’s been installing window film in the Comox Valley for more than 17 years. “Today’s window films represent a huge advancement in terms of keeping natural light in a home, but also in terms of eliminating the reflective appearance of exterior glass,” he explains. “There’s literally no way of knowing it’s there – until you see the effect it has on your energy bill.” Actually, he corrects himself, there is one way of telling whether the people around you have film on their windows – they no longer use their venetian blinds or drapes during daylight hours. Even on the brightest and hottest days, says Barlow, window film eliminates

heat, glare and UV rays so dramatically that blinds simply aren’t necessary. Many films also offer varying degrees of one-way visibility and privacy protection during daylight hours. It’s where the absence of blinds meets the misconception that window film still offers reflective privacy at night, however, that things can go horribly wrong. “We always remind folks that they’ll still require the use of blinds and venetians at night for privacy,” recounts Barlow. “ One elderly gentleman unfortunately must have had that advice slip his mind.” Barlow recalls one elderly gentleman, who was obviously proud of much more than his new window film, who would perform a stretch routine every evening – stark naked in the living room window. The neighbours eventually drew straws, with the loser earning the unenviable task of informing the gentleman that (impressed as they were) his window film did not provide privacy at night. Window film costs a fraction of what a conventional window covering would and has a 20-year life expectancy. Save on energy bills by putting the environment first Being environmentally conscious is also going to put money in your pocket. Yes, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint if you have an efficient home and use cleaner products. And with the increasing cost of energy, there are also significant savings to be had by reducing your use of utilities. Here are some eco-improvements that will save you a bundle, and put you on Mother Nature’s ‘good’ list: Insulation: If your house is older, chances are the insulation doesn’t meet the new requirements. An improperly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss and results in your furnace and air conditioning units working harder than necessary. By topping up the existing attic insulation you can significantly reduce the amount of energy loss. A popular product for this DIY project is called Roxul RockFill insulation. It is easy to work with by simply spreading the product out onto the material that is already there.
House appliances: Replacing your furnace, hot water tank, and air conditioning unit with highly efficient models is usually a good start when reducing the energy consumption of your home. Windows: It’s usually obvious when it’s time for new windows – and the related technology today is far superior to anything that is more than 20 years old. If you want to reap all the benefits of new windows, be sure to tell the installer doing the measurements that you want them to be “brick to brick,” not “inserts”. Inserts leave you with smaller windows placed into the old, inefficient jambs. Quick weekend projects: There are a few quick and simple improvements that you can tackle on your own that will increase the efficiency of your home for very little cash invested upfront. Yet with modern construction practices having substantially reduced natural air leakage, the air in our homes deserves our attention now more than ever. Daily activities such as laundry, cooking and showers can cause excessive moisture, resulting in everything from high humidity and occupant discomfort, to lingering odours and fungus growth. Conversely, a cold, dry winter combined with excessive heating can dry out an indoor space and cause its own structural and health issues, like nosebleeds and scratchy throats. There are three key ways you can keep the air in your home clean: you can ventilate, purify and humidify/dehumidify. Ventilation can be as simple as cracking open a window on a weather-friendly day, or having quality fans and exhaust systems installed in your kitchen and bathroom. For optimum ventilation, you can invest in a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV), which supplies continuous fresh air from the outside
into your house. When it comes to purifying your air, a good air cleaner for your furnace, replaced regularly, is the bare minimum. Air cleaners trap and prevent dirt and other particles from entering your air stream. There are various models available depending on your needs – affordable, stand-alone models you can buy off the shelf, all the way to whole-house air purifiers that attach to your furnace. A hospital-grade HEPA filter, for example, can stop even volatile organic compounds, such as off-gases from carpets and building materials, from entering your air supply. Lastly, there is the question of humidity – too much or too little can create a variety of problems. Humidity extremes can easily be tackled with a humidifier or dehumidifier, and many homes need both for use during different seasons. There are numerous models on the market – both self-standing as well as forced air versions that can be installed right into a furnace.
