Each year, the Cumberland Empire Days Society holds a week of events leading up to the May long weekend. This year, Empire Days will celebrate with music, song, dance and ceremony. Each year, they choose a theme, with this year’s being Salute to Seniors.

The next purchase plan entails 50 hectares of land divided into three different parcels. The three land parcels currently contain bike trails, heritage landmarks, plants, and wildlife, which the community feels is in need of protection. The fundraising goal is $1.2 million by 2016 to buy the land and stop the projected logging plans.

Another non-profit organization involved this year is Elevate the Arts, taking on the role of co-ordinating Village Market Day. Cursons says that many of the coordinators of Elevate the Arts are Cumberland residents, making it a natural choice as the non-profit organization to run it this year.

Elevate the Arts will be holding their third annual event on June 4-7 in Courtenay.

Cursons says that for Cumberland, it’s important to connect the civic holidays with the community through the collaboration of arts and business.

May 18: Old Timers Soccer Game is 2 p.m. Many of the players travel from around B.C. to return home to play. It is a day of remembering times gone by with old friends and new. This year, the highlighted project is the Cumberland Community Forest Society (www.cumberlandforest.com) which has a direct link to Cumberland’s economy.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the Valley and bring young and old (and in-between) together in support of the Cumberland Forest,” Hawkins said.

“We are looking forward to having fun in our own backyard. The Valley is a great place to celebrate all that is good about where we are privileged to live, in the land of plenty. We are excited to see the response from the community on this event.”

The CCFS has purchased 71 hectares of forest lands surrounding the Village. It has its sights on another 50 hectares slated to be logged by 2016. The goal is to raise $1.2 million to purchase another three parcels of second growth forest filled with wetlands, diverse plants and animals, heritage landmarks, and hiking and mountain biking trails.

New Panda Gardens owners ‘love Canada’ Scott Stanfield Record Staff There was a time last year when residents could not dine out for Chinese food in Cumberland.

That changed in December when David and Doudou Yan re-opened Panda Gardens after purchasing the restaurant last fall from Darryl and Jenny Leung.

The Yans hail from Beijing, China. Doudou came to Canada last year but David arrived in 2007. He has worked in restaurants in Powell River, Fraser Lake, Chetwynd, Osoyoos, Whitehorse, Edmonton and Grand Prairie, among other western Canadian locales.

Most of David’s family is in China except for an older sister who lives in Vancouver. He says he prefers the tranquility and fresh air of the west coast to the crowds and pollution of Beijing, where he

had owned a restaurant.

“I love Canada,” he said. “Here, it is so clean.”

His Beijing eatery offered “very different food” which he figures would not appeal to Canadian palates, largely because of the spice.

“This is real Canadian Chinese food,” David said of Panda Gardens.

Prices are reasonable, if not cheap. For instance, a combination plate of sweet and sour pork, deep fried chicken balls and chicken chow mein costs $10.95.

“Our sweet and sour pork is different than other restaurants,” David said. “Tender inside and crispy outside.”

The chow mein, he adds, also contains a different flavour.

“In Cumberland they love my chow mein very much.”

The Yans also serve regular patrons from other parts of the Valley and Campbell River.

Wonton soup is another spe-

cialty of David’s.

The menu also contains an assortment of egg foo yong, chop suey, pork beef, chicken and fried rice dishes. Appetizers include spring rolls, deep fried wontons and chicken wings, egg rolls, pan fried dumplings and dry garlic ribs.

The Leungs, who are pictured on the eatery’s door, had owned Panda Gardens since 2004. The couple volunteered many hours serving the community at dinner events, such as the 2007 delegation from China and Vancouver which included the Chinese Consulate.

The Yans have decided to close the buffet, though they may reopen the smorgasbord during the May Day parade.

Patrons can sit down for a meal or take out food. The restaurant offers outdoor seating in summer.

Cumberland ‘key stop’ for BC Bike Race Earle Couper Record Staff The eighth annual BC Bike Race rolls into Cumberland on June 29 this year, the second stop on a seven-day mountain bike stage race that begins June 28 in North Vancouver and ends July 5 in Whistler.

Andreas Hestler, a Canadian champion and Olympian who founded the race along with Dean Payne and is now marketing director, says Cumberland is a key stop on the route. “For world travellers, and that’s who we really like to attract, it’s a contrast to arriving in a big city like Vancouver.

“They come to the big city, get registered, they’re tense, they’re nervous, they race the first day here (North Vancouver). Then we plunk them down into a quintessential mountain town. Cumberland epitomizes that small town, West Coast feel. It’s so laid back, the scenery is beautiful.”

When the riders complete the first day’s ride, they catch a ferry and get to see some spectacular B.C. scenery. After arriving in Nanaimo, they take a bus up the Old Island Highway and gain even more appreciation of

the West Coast. “(The riders) are slowing down in their lives, they don’t realize they’re on holidays, they think there going to a bike race,” Hestler said.

“They arrive in Cumberland, they’re nestled in the mountains in a small, quiet town.

They start to unwind and really enjoy themselves. Cumberland is very welcoming. The people are really nice, they’re mellow, they’re genuine. They’re all sporty and into outdoor activities. If I was going to portray Canada in a small town feel and want people to have a really good time, I would certainly present Cumberland as a top three choice (along with Whistler and Squamish),” Hestler said.

The riders will arrive in Cumberland around 8 p.m. and have time to stroll the streets or do a little yoga before bunking down in Village Park for the night. On June 30 they have breakfast at the CRI then prepare for the 8:30 a.m. race start in the heart of the village’s core.

Hestler said the riders will enjoy a new course this year, one designed by Jeremy Gatsby that is all-Cumberland in that it does not include Forbidden Plateau. All

Village will BUZZ with labour history talks

Two events honouring labour history will merge into one weekend in June, filling Cumberland to the brim with diverse labour history talks and activities.

The 29th annual Miners Memorial Weekend (June 12 to 14) will be joined this year by the 2014 Pacific Northwest Labour History Association (PNLHA) Conference (June 13 to 15). Normally held in large urban centres such as Portland, Seattle or Vancouver, the decision to hold the event in a small municipality like Cumberland is unusual, according to local PNLHA trustee Brian Charlton, who says Cumberland’s rich history will be celebrated by people from all over.

“Probably the most exciting part is that there’s going to be lots of people coming from outside of the Comox Valley, so Oregon and Washington and a lot of people from the Lower Mainland and Victoria are going to come and be able to see what kind of history that we have here in the Valley, especially around Cumberland,” says Charlton.

The PNLHA, the Campbell River, Courtenay and District Labour Council and the Cumberland Museum are co-hosting the annual Labour History Conference. This year’s theme is ‘Mining the Past: Conflict and Solidarity in a Resource Economy’.

More than 22 sessions will offer a wide array of labour history topics, some of which will be locally focused, says Charlton.

“The nice thing about this is it’s a smorgasboard so people will be able to choose from (the sessions) and some of it’s more modern stuff, too.”

Event chairperson Jean Cameron notes the CMR began when Leslie Baird (then councillor, now mayor) came to her with the idea of putting on a motorcycle event to attract people to downtown Cumberland.

“She said ‘Do you think we can do this?’

I said, ‘Yes I do.’ Her and I started it, and after the first year I’ve been running it and she’s been a great supporter of everything.”

Cameron notes the event has grown every year. “This year we’ve extended the length of the site to accommodate everyone. It was really busy last year (about 1,500 bikes) and we’re anticipating around 6,000 people, maybe more, this year. “ Getting the weekend off to a slam-bang start on Friday, All Star Wrestling is coming from Vancouver to do a charity wrestling event (7-9 p.m. at the CRI). “It’s the first time they’ve been here in a really long time, so I’m pretty sure they’re going to put on a super show,” Cameron said. Proceeds will go to pediatric cancer research.

“Most of our money that we raise goes to pediatric cancer research through the Tour de Rock. When the tour comes here in September we present them with a cheque.

We also support other things … we’ll pick a child-related charity or a fund or a school or something that needs a boost and give them money. We try to spread it around,” Cameron said.

The Village comes alive on Saturday as vendors line Dunsmuir Avenue, with arts and crafts, food and music around almost every corner. One of the big attractions is Vancouver’s Westcoast Freestyle Stunt Bike Team, who will be performing at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. “They’re fabulous. Just amazing to watch,” Cameron said.

Raffles and draws are held throughout the day, with terrific prizes offered. Femme Natale’s will be demonstrating pole fitness from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Waverley Hotel. There will be lingerie shows by Lee-Ann Dixon with UndercoverWear at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. and burlesque at the Cumberland Hotel.

Some amazing bikes will be on display during the Show and Shine, with judging getting underway at 1 p.m. Kids will have a chance to meet Tank the Robot as he roams the streets, and also entertaining on the streets will be

A beer garden opens at 4 p.m. and Bike Games start at 5 p.m. There is also a tattoo competition and three live bands playing at various venues.

Wrapping things up Saturday is a dance at the CRI featuring Machine Gun Kelly, “a great rocking dance band,” Cameron said.

There will be a silent auction, lots of door prizes and a 50/50 draw. Tickets will be available all day at the event up till 8 p.m., but will not be available at the door.

The Traditional Texas Barbecue providing delicious food right outside the doors of the dance provide by Comox Valley Taxi. Also, a shuttle service will run from the Courtenay Travel Lodge to the dance.

Sunday is dedicated to the Tom Carpenter Poker Run, which begins with registration at 8 a.m. “The Poker Run is named after our head judge who we lost in 2012.
