Environment Minister Mary Polak says it’s too late for a pause on the rollout of the Multi Material BC recycling system. Several letters sent by firms including Eddi’s Wholesale Garden Supplies, Cinnabar Valley Farms and Cobs Breads have gone to government serving notice they won’t comply. McCulloch maintains MMBC is an illegitimate, unaccountable “monopoly” that businesses have been “coerced” by the province to join because there’s no real alternative. Higher fees than are charged by a similar package-and-paper recycling scheme in Ontario is a key complaint. But Environment Minister Mary Polak said misinformation about the program is rampant in the business community and much

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A3

of it is coming from McCulloch. “He refuses to listen to the information provided him,” she said, adding Buckerfield’s is likely largely exempt from MMBC fees because most of its products go to farms, not consumers. Likewise, she said, many other businesses wrongly believe their fees will be much higher than is the case, due to either low flat fees or exemptions for all but the largest generators of packaging. The decision to make companies whose packaging enters the waste stream responsible for the costs of han-

dling it was a national agreement with other environment ministers, she said. Those who want to go their own way can still pursue an alternative stewardship system, Polak said, adding breweries are advancing their own system and talks are also underway with the newspaper industry. Polak said MMBC can’t be subject to provincial audits – as McCulloch has demanded – because it is not an arm of government, but is regulated and accountable as a non-profit. She said organizations representing dairy

farms, landscaping and nursery firms, as well as the B.C. Agriculture Council, are now part of an MMBC advisory council. As for demands for a freeze on the program, Polak said that’s not possible. “We are way too far down the road to be pausing it,” she said. Doing so would stop the rollout of curb-

side blue box pickup to smaller communities that haven’t had it before, throw into chaos collection arrangements in cities where MMBC is set to take over and block the flow of MMBC payments to most municipalities that will continue as contractors under the new system, she said. “If suddenly you told

the Capital Regional District they’re going to have to find $4.8 million, I don’t think anyone would find that very acceptable.” Asked if businesses that don’t pay into MMBC will soon face provincially imposed fines, Polak said enforcement may vary according to how much waste is generated. “Tim Horton’s is part

This year the annual Creston Blossom Festival is celebrating the fruit packing industry. The Theme The fruit packing industry in Creston was one of the longestlasting and most well known of all the agriculture businesses. At the peak in 1950 the Creston Valley’s four packing sheds directly employed a total of 234 people, not including the farm workers to raise and harvest the fruit. In 1947 and in 1948, 53 varieties of apples totalling 385,395 boxes were shipped from the valley’s packing sheds. 25 varieties of plums, filling 12,706 boxes, also left the packing sheds that year. The Wynndel packing shed also handled soft fruits and flowers as well. In 1947, it shipped 12,284 crates of strawberries, 18,569 crates of raspberries and 16,850 dozen cut flowers. The Festival Of course, while all that information about the packing industry is important, especially if you are in the fruit business in Creston, what is in store for this weekend is what is on the minds of people throughout the region. On Friday, May 16, people can view the famous model railway at the Creston Museum. The Lego Challenge will see people from

Friday is also the opening day of the Creston Valley Wildlife Centre, so come on down to see some of the unique wildlife in the area. The big thrill on Friday evening, of course, is the Blossom Festival Opening Concert, featuring the Creston Talent Showcase and the Citizen of the Year. This event happens at the Prince Charles Secondary School Theatre. Saturday, May 17, starts with the annual Lions Club Breakfast on Canyon Street, and the Street Fair, organized by the Lions Club and TAPS. The Blossom Festival Parade starts at 11 a.m. and runs from 18th Avenue to the Creston Valley Mall. This day also includes Kidapalooza, a Root Beer Garden, Duck Race, Farmer’s Market, plenty of entertainment in Millennium Park including a teen dance. Sunday, May 18 begins with the Knights of Columbus Western Breakfast at the Catholic Church Hall. The Blossom 5 and 10 kilometre runs start at 9 a.m., the Lego Challenge continues, the famous 100 kilometre plus Yard Sale takes place at Highway 3 and Helen Road and the Classic Car Show, (a favourite amongst car buffs) takes place at Canyon Street from 10th to 16th Avenue. Ten years in, Forest Act needs work Submitted The ten-year-old Forest and Range Practices Act, aimed at reducing cost and complexity for industry while maintaining high environmental standards, has been partly implemented and is working in most situations. However, some aspects of implementation are not complete or are not working as well as expected and improvement is needed, according to a Forest Practices Board report issued today. “Now that 10 years have passed, we felt it was timely to inform the public about how well the act is working, based on our audits and investigations,” said board chair Tim Ryan. “We have published over 250 reports as part of our oversight of industry practices and government enforcement of this legislation. That body of work says a lot about what’s working well and where the issues are.” “Our work shows that forest practices generally comply with the legislation, subject to the recent increase in noncompliances we have been finding in audits and investigations,” said Ryan. “But the determination of whether those practices achieve government’s objectives is still a work in progress.” The report provides observations and ratings for the components of the legislative framework concluding that: * Government objectives for forest and range values have not been fully established, and some are unclear. * Forest stewardship plans required under FRPA have limited usefulness for either planning or the public engagement they are supposed to encourage. * Some forest practice requirements are not clear. * Government compliance and enforcement is not as thorough as it once was. * Monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of practices could do more to encourage improvement to the regulations and operational performance. “There is also room for improvement. The full suite of government objectives has not been established, leaving, in some areas, a vacuum in government policy, which licensees and their

professionals should not be expected to fill. Plans required by FRPA have limited usefulness for planning purposes or as a mechanism for public engagement. Some practice requirements are not clear. The compliance and enforcement program has significantly reduced its inspection effort in the areas of forestry and range practices. There is still no common understanding about what ‘professional reliance’ is and what should be expected from it. Effectiveness evaluations are being carried out, but the results are not being used to improve regulation,” stated the report. The report also includes advice on what needs to be done to achieve the intent of the legislation and ensure B.C. has sound forest and range practices that warrant public confidence. The Forest Practices Board is B.C.’s independent watchdog for sound forest and range practices, reporting its findings and recommendations directly to the public and government. The board investigates and reports on current forestry and range issues and makes recommendations for improvement to practices and legislation. The report is available on the board website at: www. fpb.gov.bc.ca.

CBT grants available for environmental projects Submitted

Community groups, organizations and societies with project ideas that will maintain or enhance environmental conditions are invited to apply for a grant of up to $10,000. Apply now through June 27, 2014, by visiting cbt. org/eg. Eligible projects includes ones that strengthen ecosystems, help communities mitigate and adapt to climate change, and support environmental education—all of which address goals in the Trust’s new Environment Strategic Plan. Through environment grants, the Trust has provided over $5 million during the past 12 years for environmental conservation, restoration, stewardship and education projects across the Basin. The Kokanee Salmon School Program is one of the projects that has benefited from support. Delivered by the West Arm Outdoors Club, this program brings youth and adults to the Kokanee Creek spawning channel along Kootenay Lake to teach them about healthy habitats, life cycles, fisheries management and the importance of stewardship relative to Kokanee salmon. “This project is important because it has several components that

are crucial for the youth of the Basin to experience at an early age: the direct interconnections between animals and plants, and predators and prey in an ecosystem, the life cycle of the Kokanee salmon and the solid fisheries management of a precious natural resource,” said Nancie Dohan, Program Coordinator. “The impact of this project is far-reaching. Youth, parents and teachers directly experience a sense of place and gain stewardship values as they participate in the program.” “We are looking for community-initiated and -supported projects that contribute to larger regional impacts,” said Sabrina Curtis, Trust Director, Sector Initiatives. “We want these projects to make a real difference to both the local environment and residents of the entire Basin area.” Earlier this year, the Trust finalized its Environment Strategic Plan, which will guide

The vocational school is back B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher The B.C. government has rolled out its ambitious overhaul of the public education system, from kindergarten to graduate school, much to the horror of its left-wing establishment. The formal title is B.C.’s Skills For Jobs Blueprint: Re-engineering Education and Training. It’s designed to dovetail with the Harper regime’s Canada Job Grant that requires employers to co-sponsor training spaces so they will hire the students at the end. Elementary and middle school curriculum is being revised to increase emphasis on hands-on experience. High school and post-secondary skilled trades programs are getting more money, but it’s going to be shifted from under-performing programs that don’t lead to jobs. Premier Christy Clark took another swipe at the bias of B.C.’s system before heading to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong on another liquefied natural gas sales trip. She noted that 20% of B.C. students, and nearly half of aboriginal students, don’t finish high school. “Not only are there kids who don’t graduate, there are kids who graduate, go out and get one or two credentials before they finally find their way into a skills training program,” said Clark, who had her own wander through university campuses before going into politics. A couple of weeks ago, Simon Fraser

University president Andrew Petter downplayed the “relatively small” skilled trades shortage for B.C. industry. “We should not be engaged in a zero-sum kind of battle for dollars,” Petter protested. That’s exactly what he and other university executives are looking at, and it will be based on the latest graduate employment data and labour demand forecasts. One of the key architects of this sweeping plan is Jessica McDonald, who shook up the public service while serving as Gordon Campbell’s deputy minister. Her report on trades training confirms what Campbell’s critics in the labour movement have long said: the government’s 10-year experiment with the Industry Training Authority is a rudderless mess. “Certain partners, particularly organized labour, feel marginalized,” McDonald wrote. “Others, particularly employers and employers’ associations, do not feel heard within the system. Over the recent past, several new directions have been introduced such as de-regulation of trades and modular training that have caused strain because they were not fully inclusive during development, were seen to benefit single interests, and they impacted the whole system.” The ITA board is being replaced, with union representation restored, and advisory councils from industrial employers will update their hiring needs.

Tamara L’Hoost

mArKEtiNG CoNsULtANt

The B.C. Federation of Labour and the construction unions have all but abandoned the NDP after Adrian Dix’s disastrous pitch for urban anti-industry votes last year. B.C. Fed president Jim Sinclair was an early advocate for rescuing skilled trades from the second-class status they received in a culture fixated on university for two generations. That culture has created glaring problems. There are too many institutions offering the same courses. As with health care, block funding is handed out without any serious effort to measure the results. For many students, university has become an extension of adolescence, finding one’s self through philosophy or film studies. Employers get their share of blame from McDonald. Not only did they chop up trades training to make it cheaper to obtain, their preferred source of skilled workers has been to poach from other employers who paid to train them. Skills-based employment data will be made public for students to make career choices. Finally, students coming out of high school will have a way to assess what they can expect after $50,000 or more is spent on higher education. It’s about time.

WIM would like to extend a sincere thank you to AMEBC for their much appreciated online support. “Receiving the support from Adnet Communications as the designers and hosts for our website is a testimony of the importance and value of relationships in the industry, an alignment of values in terms of giving back to the community, and a gesture of encouragement; without them we

The Sullivan Mine in Kimberley. near Fort Steele, 30-km east of the worldfamous Sullivan Mine at Kimberley, BC. Drill hole SU1407 is the first of several planned holes and drilling has recently exceeded a hole depth of 240-m on a planned trajectory toward the East Target. The target is a gravity mass anomaly estimated to come to within 800-m of surface and extending to depth. Exploration work completed in late 2013 expanded the gravity station density around the area of previous drilling and significantly refined the target model, now clearly demonstrating the potential for twin parallel north-south trending stratabound masses approximately 800-m apart. The East and West gravity targets are made more compelling because they also have coincident magnetic anomalies. Further, the 2013 drilling established that steeply dipping bedding continues to, and likely extends well beyond, the drilled depth of 1,500-m. Management believes the best explanation for the twin gravity anomalies is the presence of two very large vertically oriented SEDEX massive sulphide bodies. The company recently announced that drill hole SU14-07 has reached a completion depth of 1,289-m at the Sully Project, having successfully confirmed Lower Aldridge formation host rocks, and importantly, a projection for Sullivan time that is coincident with the large-scale East gravity mass. A new drill hole (SU14-

Photo submitted

08) will begin immediately on a trajectory to intersect the East Target at approximately 900-m below surface, see figure attached. Aldridge Formation Host SU14-07 revealed that Aldridge Formation unit A1c is the likely host to the East Target - this directly correlates with the stratigraphy that hosts the Sullivan orebody, 30-kms to the west of Sully. Aldridge units A1a (lowest), A1b and A1c were deposited on the Fort Steele Formation and all four units correlate with the lower Aldridge Formation at Sullivan and elsewhere in the basin. A marked thickening of A1c in SU1407 implies proximity to an accumulation centre of an inferred sub-basin assemblage. Within this thickening is a 50m interval containing traces of lead, zinc and copper sulphides and unusual thin silica beds thought to be derived from hydrothermal solutions associated with formation of a mineral deposit. The Sullivan Mine Sullivan was discovered in 1892 and is one of the largest SEDEX deposits in the world. Over its roughly 100year lifetime, Sullivan produced almost 300 million ounces of silver, 36 billion pounds of lead and zinc plus smaller amounts of other metals, collectively worth over $40 billion at current metal prices. The company cautions that past results or discoveries on proximate land are not necessarily indicative of the results that may be achieved in present or future operations.

Program (FWCP). First Nations, conservation and stewardship groups, biologists and agencies will use the money to undertake their projects that will support conservation and enhancement aimed at fish and wildlife in the Columbia River Basin. Fish projects funded this year focus on kokanee, bull trout, rainbow trout as well as the large Gerrard Rainbow trout and include work to maintain and restore

fish habitat. Studies to improve knowledge about fish and abundance are also being funded. Projects funded this year will also focus on managing invasive species including zebra and quagga mussels, and providing more information about the historical range of sockeye salmon. Wildlife projects funded in 2014 are aimed at conserving caribou, moose, lynx, wolverine, grizzly bears, mountain

goats, bighorn sheep, deer, snakes, bats, Western-Screech owls and other birds. The projects include handson wetland, riparian and grassland habitat restoration, invasive weed management, and studies to improve the science and understanding, in order to inform future wildlife enhancement projects. The wildlife projects funded by FWCP in the Columbia Basin this year are diverse and

include projects aimed at assessing the risk of white-nose syndrome to local bats, improving survival rates for captive-reared caribou, and reducing grizzly bear and human encounters as a tool to support grizzly movements through populated areas. The funding of $860,000 announced today is in addition to the Columbia Region’s ongoing projects, for example, the nutrient restoration projects

in the Arrow Lakes Reservoir and Kootenay Lake and operations of Meadow and Hill Creek spawning channels. In 2014, in total, FWCP-Columbia will invest nearly $5 million in local fish and wildlife projects. Learn more about the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program at www.fwcp. ca.

TELUS is investing $13 million in Cranbrook for wireless service Submitted

TELUS is investing $13 million in Cranbrook this year to expand its local wireless services including the world’s fastest wireless technology, called 4G LTE; extend the reach of Optik TV; increase available Internet speed and capacity, and connect more homes and

businesses to high-speed Internet. “This significant $13 million investment in Cranbrook will not only enhance services at home, but will provide a huge bandwidth and speed boost to local businesses, opening up a world of innovation and global markets,” said Steve Jenkins, TELUS general manager in the

Southern Interior. “From enjoying more choice and the powerful features of Optik TV to dramatically faster wireless speeds, this investment will position Cranbrook as having one of the most the most advanced communications infrastructure available in the world today.” This year, TELUS’ investment will advance

Is Your Core Functioning Properly?

Most people think they know how to condition their core muscles properly because they try to copy exercises they saw featured in magazines or because they follow TV shows that offer programs to get great abs and shed 10 pounds in 2 weeks. The reality of it is, most people do not manage to recruit the right muscles when it comes to performAurélie ing core exercises. Your core is Wiedemann composed of numerous muscles that are key to proper functioning of your body. Today we are going to look at an important core muscle and its interactions: the Transverse Abdominus. The Transverse Abdominus is one of your deepest abdominal muscles and it literally represents your natural weight belt. Why? Because it wraps around your abdomen and communicates with a deep layer of fascia* in your back which is itself connected with all major back muscles. When used properly it activates the diaphragm which due to its crura extensions decreases the pressure in the lumbar vertebrae (lower back). It is the muscle you use to bring your belly button in. Knowing how to use that muscle properly helps you protect your back in numerous, if not all, weight bearing exercises. However, because of years of faulty conditioning or sedentary lifestyle, most people’s Transverse Abdominus isn’t active at all when they exercise. Frequently, instead of a proper activation of this deep abdominal muscle, I see an overrecruitment of the Rectus Abdominus (the “six pack”) during weight bearing exercises and an over-recruitment of the hip flexors when it comes to core conditioning. This is quite alarming because the Rectus Abdominus is supposed to act as a stabilizer under heavy loads only. If you start to activate this particular muscle under light loads, it means you have a faulty recruitment pattern in the abdominal wall. This often times strains the neck muscles encouraging forward head posture and can also overload the back creating pain. On top of that if the hip flexors are facilitated (facilitated = short and tight) from sitting in a chair all day, chances are your body will activate those trouble makers instead of your lower abdominals during your core conditioning session. People should be taught to activate their core properly to avoid muscular imbalances and to promote optimal joint function, range of motion and ultimately ideal posture. This is why at Sattva Training (now at Core Fitness) we offer a “Group Training Assessment and Program Creation Seminar”. It is a ½ day seminar where we will assess your posture and core in a group setting, explain why re-balancing your muscles is important, as well as show you and go through the exercises/stretches that are adapted to your body’s unique needs. After the seminar a detailed and tailored workout will be e-mailed to each participant. Next seminar takes place on Saturday May 17th at Core fitness. Price $60 + taxes To know more about our services come to Core Fitness, or call/message Aurélie Wiedemann at 250-464-4046. You can also e-mail Aurélie at sattvatraining@gmail.com For the latest news check out Sattva Training’s facebook page, and don’t forget to like it! *fascia: connective tissue sheet surrounding muscles, blood vessels and nerves.

Healthy Weight Loss The desire to loose weight is the second most common health complaint that patients in my clinic report and over the next few articles I will explore this challenging issue. We are in the midst of a weight crises in Canada. Children and adults alike are heavier than ever and the consequences of heart disease, diabetes and arthritis are taxing our health care system to the limits. The bulk of the problem (no pun intended) started 40 years ago with the overabundance of corn in the US food market. Nixon's agriculture minister had a dilemma, farmers had too much corn on their hands and he was under pressure to find a way to help them out. Cheaper and sweeter than sugar, high fructose corn syrup was the solution to his problem. Corn syrup was marketed as the cheap, sweet sugar to replace the need to import sugar made from sugar cane. A few years later a US government report blamed fat, not sugar, as the culprit in the disturbing rise of heart disease in that country. So

started the modern health experiment disaster: the high carbohydrate, low fat diet. Eating high fructose corn syrup interferes with a hormone called leptin, making it hard to stop eating and we overeat. In addition, a high carbohydrate, low fat diet promotes the release of insulin which is extremely pro-inflammatory. Inflammation promotes the release of hormones like cortisol that make us gain weight. Further, excess sugar from corn syrup, and from starchy carbohydrates in general, is stored as fat so we end up getting fatter by avoiding fats. To make matters more challenging our environment is filled with chemicals that mimic estrogen and this hormone also promotes weight gain. These are just a few of the dietary and environmental factors that are contributing to the epidemic of obesity. Over the next few articles let's talk about steps you can take to counter these factors and help you loose some weight.

their team members and retirees give where they live, supporting grassroots community organizations across B.C. “Across the province, our TELUS family truly sees themselves as members of each community where we operate, and we believe our investment in local organizations is just as important as our investment in technology,” continued Jenkins. “Our philosophy, We Give Where We Live, is exemplified by our TELUS family of team members and retirees donating over $235,000 and, importantly, volunteering more than 83,000 hours to community and charitable organizations in Cranbrook since 2000.”

Host an International Student! School Districts 5 and 6 invite families throughout the East Kootenay to host one or two international students starting in September. Most students are from Germany, Mexico, Brazil and Japan, will be studying in Grades 8 to 12, and will be staying either for one semester or one school year. We encourage empty-nester parents or any family to consider hosting two students from different countries. Such double placements are consistently very successful. Host families receive a tax-free allowance each month per student, and weekend and/or vacation coverage is available.

The City of Cranbrook apologizes for any inconvenience the work may cause.

You could keep the existing layout and just change the bathroom fittings, the lighting, and the floor covering, or you could enlarge it by encroaching on underused neighbou ring space. In that case, be sure to include plumbing and electri cal costs in your bud get. It is a good idea to call in some profes sionals at this point, as safety and efficiency are paramount. The big challenge is to create an airy look while providing stor age space. Why not make your downstairs washroom a showstopper? builtin elements or to create a recess that can be used as a shelf. Opt for low furnishings, as higher ones will give the room a crowded look. To maintain an illusion of spaciousness, avoid overcrowding. If you want to lay some tiles, opt for large dimensions and don’t forget to buy a few extra in case of breakage. Tastes and colours are always a very personal

matter. That said, it is usually preferable to stick with pale colours in cool tones rather than warm, darker ones, which tend to make a room look smaller. At the very least, plan to keep the ceiling white. Lastly, choose acces sories that have a dual function, such as heated towel rails or a mirror with integrated light ing.

Then we bypassed Kelowna and headed for Beaverdell, admiring the evidence of the now defunct historic Kettle Valley railway. Then the chilling hail hit but a single glass of beer at Rock Creek restored us us. We weaved our way north along the valley, through wine country, to Penticton. “Piece of cake,” said George the next day as he looked at the route to Hope. The winding back road trail to Princeton was a joy but the last stretch home was not. First, we were hit by snow, then hail that numbed our faces as we descended from Manning Park. I thought I had made a significant anatomical discovery when it appeared that the icy wind blasting up my right nostril seemed to exit through my left ear. Of course, it could have been the hole in the left side of my helmet. There was one other little challenge. The panel failed so I had to peer at my handheld GPS to figure out what speed we were doing then shout at the top of my voice when George exceeded the posted limit. We made it safe and sound. “Next year, Sid?” “I’ll get back to you, George.” keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Question OF THE WEEK:

Our American friends have a choice of six Mazda3 trim levels, while Canadians have only three.

Best Quality and Price in the Kootenays North end of the Strip 250-426-1882 Kodiak Homes tf: 855-815-7575 Cranbrook www.kodiakhomes.ca sales@kodiakhomes.ca

By Bob McHugh

During a recent short stay in Los Angeles, I drove a Mazda3i Grand Touring.

2034 Cranbrook Street, N., Cranbrook, BC V1C 3T1 Drivers wanted.®

It’s a trim level that’s not available in Canada, even though Mazda3 is more popular (comparatively) in Canada than in the US. And price,

well, that also turned out to be a surprisingly interesting comparison. It’s easy to understand why so many Canadians already love Mazda3. The 2014 edition is an improved all-new generation car that’s already been voted Canada’s Best New Small Car, by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). Softer, more flowing body styling lines cover a new SkyActiv structure that’s lighter yet, according to Mazda, offers a 30 per cent improvement in torsional rigidity. The 3’s wheelbase has also been stretched by 6 cm, yet it’s a tad shorter in overall length. Inside the cabin there’s more room, especially leg and head room for the rear passengers. Mazda3i GT Sedan: A topline GT (Grand Touring) edition of Mazda3 is available in Canada, but only with a larger 2.5-litre SkyActiv engine and

250-489-4327 • Toll Free 1-877-689-4327 www.arrowvw.ca DL#5467

an automatic transmission. The 3i GT that I drove in LA came with the smaller 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. An automatic is an option in the US and there’s also a 3s GT edition with the 2.5-litre engine (manual and automatic). The 2.0-litre engine was available last year in Mazda3, but the new body allows a larger exhaust manifold and this improves its mid-range torque output. It’s definitely better, but still not great. That said, overall I really like this engine and crisp-shifting manual transmission combination and the fuel economy was outstanding. There was 312 miles (502 km) on the trip meter when I pulled into a gas station, for the first time, at the end of my stay. It took less than 9 gallons ($35) to fill the tank. That’s 34.8 mpg (US), or 41.8

mpg (Imp gal) or 6.9 L/100 km, if you prefer metric and brilliant by any measure. My driving was a mix of city/highway and usual traffic hold-ups that are commonplace in the LA area. The EPA official combined fuel economy rating for this vehicle is 33 mpg. Canada vs US: Small cars are number one in Canada and we bought over 40,000 Mazda3 models last year, making it the fourth most popular small car. Mid-size cars traditionally out-sell small cars in the US, and Mazda3 was only the tenth best seller in the small car segment, however, that’s still 100,000 plus sales. A no-frills, stripped base model is also the norm in the US, but not in Canada (got to have those seat heaters). In fact, our American friends have a choice of six Mazda3 trim levels, while Canadians have only three. “We have a less complicated trim level strategy,” countered Sandra Lemaitre (National Manager, Public Relations at Mazda Canada). “One, to make it less complicated for consumers and two, to allow our dealers carry inventory that consumers want. We also offer more option packages that allow consumers to add on, rather than making them commit to a specific trim” Pricing: You’ve probably read (on the inter-web) or heard of people saving thousands of dollars by buying a vehicle in the US. That may be true for some high-end luxury or specialty products, but not so in the price-competitive lower end of the market. Dollar for dollar a Canadian pays about the same, or less, than a US buyer, for a similar new Mazda3. So, you will definitely save money by buying a new Mazda3 in Canada, when you also factor in the current 10 to 12 per cent difference in currency exchange rates and importation costs. “When we price our vehicles in Canada we look primarily at the competition and then at exchange rates with Japan. Our top priority is making it competitively priced within our market,” added Lemaitre. Looking ahead: The bad news is that there won’t be a direct equivalent to the Mada3i GT (2.0-litre) in Canada next year (for the 2015 model year). However, I did learn that a manual transmission will be available with the GT (2.5-litre) sold in Canada, in 2015. It’s anybody’s guess where prices will be next year, but one thing is for sure, the Mazda3 is great little car and a great value in Canada right now. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Acura MDX has all the bells and whistles

‘‘

It is a powerful and very luxurious vehicle; a real treat to drive.

Ian Harwood

’’

By Ian Harwood

The 2014 Acura MDX is a perfect example of how technology can change your driving experience. There is no mistaking an Acura, be it a car, cross-over or an SUV, the front end gives it away. The front air dam coming to a point, the large grille featuring the Acura logo and the swept back sweeping lines set it apart. The available 19” aluminum alloy wheels on the MDX fills the wheel well very nicely. When you first open the door of the Acura MDX Elite you immediately notice the refinements and how everything flows together very well. The driver’s seat is an eight-way power adjustable with a two-way way power lumbar support, and the passenger front seat is an eightway power adjustable. The second row is a 60/40 split folding and the third row is a 50/50 split flat folding. With the third row, folded flat there is plenty of room for cargo. The available Navigation system has voice recognition and a rear back up camera built in. The stereo is a 546-watt ELS surround sound system with DVD/AM/FM/SiriusXM/ MP3/WMA tuner with your choice of 10 to 12 speakers including a subwoofer. The available DVD entertainment system features a 16.2 inch split screen display with HDMI compatibility, no more kids fighting over the remote. There is an available Collision Mitigation Braking system (CBMS), standard

equipment on the Elite, which is constantly monitoring the road for you. If it detects you are approaching another vehicle too quickly it will warn you with a flashing “brake” sign on the instrument panel and if the accident is unavoidable it will tighten up the seatbelts and apply the brakes for you to reduce the severity of the impact. Another safety feature is the blind spot information system. This warns when a vehicle is in your blind spot and flashes an amber light on the inside of each side mirror warning you. Dual stage, dual threshold front airbags, front side airbags, three row side curtain airbags with roll over sensor, engine immobilizer theft deterrent system are some of the many safety features in this vehicle. I like the power folding, body colored side mirrors with intergraded turn signals. Power is delivered by a 290 hp, 3.5 Litre, i-VTEC V6 engine with a 6 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The super handling all wheel drive (SH-AWD) suspension gives you the best ride while maintaining just enough control to keep you safely on the road. My tester was the MDX Elite that comes fully loaded. After driving around in this vehicle for a week, I started to get used to the technology and how the safety features start to perform, it became natural and helped me relax and enjoy the drive. It is a powerful and very luxurious vehicle, a real treat to drive. I would like to see a little more headroom and the six-speed transmission seemed to have a mind of its own. Lots of competition in this segment, from Lincoln MKT, Volvo XC90, Buick Enclave, and the Infiniti JX, so if Acura wants to win you over, they have to keep delivering a great product with as many standard features as they can while keeping the price in check. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Audi A7 is a luxury fuel sipper

Verdict

The Audi A7 is a lovely car; filled with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige but it all comes at a price.

‘‘

The engine is a fuel-sipping diesel that saves roughly 25-30 per cent over a conventional gasoline engine.

’’

Zack Spencer

By Zack Spencer

Audi is one of the luxury brands under the massive Volkswagen Group, which includes Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. By sharing engineering knowledge, platforms and engines across several different brands, (including the mainstream Volkswagen brand) enables VW to reduce costs and develop more products. One area of importance, in Canada, is the introduction of more and more diesel, or TDI engines, into the marketplace. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is a perfect example of what the VW Group is doing right. The engine is a fuel-sipping diesel that saves roughly 25-30 percent over a conventional gasoline engine, yet still supplies the dynamic ride Audi owners look. Looks

The body of the A7 TDI is the same as the gasoline versions and it could be one of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road. Actually, the A7 could be considered a five-door model, as the rear cargo rear is accessed through a massive hatch. This, is in combination with the sleek coupe-like silhouette is what makes this car different than much of the competition. Buyers who like the idea of a big luxury car but also want something a bit sportier will enjoy the

dynamic stance, especially combined with the oversized sports wheels. Oversized is also a good way to describe the A7s grille, which is framed by an aggressive set of headlamps and deep front spoiler. The back is much more subdued and the rear lights look almost Aston Martin-inspired.

years of driving thanks to the improved fuel economy. This technology is also available in other, less expensive models, so don’t be too shocked by the starting price. One thing Audi does not have is a 4-cylinder diesel for the smaller and less expensive models, something both BMW and Mercedes offer. I suspect there will be one coming in short order, but for now the A7 is a prime example of Audi’s expansion into diesel transportation.

Starting at $72,900, the diesel is a $2,500 premium over the base A7. The owner could recapture that additional money over several

Inside

The downside to the swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passengers might find it a bit snug and big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sport-back, with a much higher roof for fullsized adult passengers. The reality is that many professions who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best material are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market.

Audi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb.-ft. to 428 lb.-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. Put the throttle down and this big luxury sedan just rockets away, the way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that power but also impressive fuel economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In comparison, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go.
