A COLLABORATIVE ADVENTURE

As a first time bride at 49, I’d waited a long time, so I set out to plan the perfect wedding. Involving our children mattered most, and we wanted our day to be full of things we love: friends, fun, good food, nature, wine, and live music. To keep it homey and affordable, we opted to do it ourselves. Even with our lists, websites, magazines, we underestimated tremendously! We needed help. Luckily, offers poured in. Our wedding became a massive collaboration as friends and family stepped up. A twig heart drawn by my brother featured on invitations and decorations created by my son. Wedding bouquets were planted in a friend’s garden. Signature cocktails were invented, and Okanagan wine was sourced. A friend made 140 wooden charcuterie plates, each notched for a wine glass; chutneys and pickles were put up and 140 tiny alder twig hearts woven. The baker bailed, so my daughter offered to make our wedding cake: a four-tiered wonder, each layer unique. Brazilian relatives packed up 500 traditional handmade wedding sweets – in a suitcase! The menu I planned ebbed from my list, evolving into a friend-catered, 4-course meal served by a bevy of our kids’ friends. Our seven children agreed to be our wedding party: we were so thrilled! Spread from Halifax to Victoria, Facebook, email, and text brought them together, and they showed up full of excitement – no shoes, but lots of excitement. The final week of preparations drew to a close, and out of town guests arrived. Venues were booked; the commissioner hired and dress altered; No Excuse with Karli D was apprised of our favourite songs; extra chairs, dishes, glassware, and linens were rented. Friday before the wedding, we decorated the grounds of rustic Harrop Hall in warm August sunshine. Great anticipation filled the air. No one really paid heed to predicted showers … we’d seen nothing but sunshine and blue sky for weeks on end. Our wedding day dawned ripe with promise; final details were set with little attention to the grey horizon. Our ceremony went beautifully, full of fun energy and quirky vows amid Gyro Park’s grandeur. Our guests went on to the reception, as we hammed it up for the photographer, who reveled in the drama of the skies. Nearly at Harrop, we gawked in disbelief at the rain-pocked lake, knowing our guests were mingling with hors d’oeuvres and champagne cocktails in the hall’s open grassy grove. It must be a passing summer squall, we reasoned, common for August. Yet, upon our arrival the skies opened in an utter deluge, thunder crashing as we toasted with a kiss.

Still hopeful, we greeted guests, casting occasional disparaging glances over at the 17 linen-clad tables elegantly transforming the grove. Two more squalls passed as the meal arrived with torrents falling from the sky; each carefully construed detail of our wedding melted in irrelevance. We had the hall in case of rain, but moving was impossible. We had a few meagre tents, but nary enough for all. We had no choice but to welcome the invincible rain right into our midst. There was no controlling this detail, so we embraced it. Guests scrambled for jackets and umbrellas, re-purposed napkins as shelters, and worked together to carry over tents. We circulated, opening wine bottles with the corkscrew and hearts with laughter and lightness. This was our day, and the weather would not trump it. Not one guest left due to weather; even the chilly flower girls brought forth only warm smiles. The worst case scenario had happened, yet it was still our wedding. The rain brought people together, and everyone understood that the details were not the main show, the circumstances were irrelevant; love was being celebrated here, so celebrate we did. The rain did not let up all night, with squall after squall passing through our cheery bash, but it didn’t matter. Recounted later as one of the best weddings ever, it was as though letting go of the details gave everyone license to kick up their heels and revel with joy. We got exactly what we wanted: a natural outdoor wedding full of the spirit of love and fun. Reflecting, I believe what turned disastrous to delightful was our commitment to family, fun, and flexibility. We identified what we valued most and stayed open to the unknown and uncontrollable. By remembering the point was sharing our love let everything else work out.

THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME By Sam Van Schie
Nadya Thomson may have met her sweetheart on the other side of the planet, but when it came to picking the perfect location for their wedding, the West Kootenay native was as close to home as it gets. Nadya met Kurt Thomson, her husband-to-be, seven years ago while living in New Zealand on a temporary work visa. She was 19 years old and, after months living in a tent, was convinced to finally rent a room in a flat. As fate would have it, she wound up moving into a room that Kurt had just moved out of. The day they met, he was returning his keys to his former - and her future - flat mates. “He was this super cool Kiwi with dreadlocks,” recalled Nadya, who considers herself to be somewhat shy.“I was pretty intimidated by him at first.”

But they soon got to know each other better, as he regularly found reasons to visit the flat or text her. They started dating in March 2007 and, though Nadya insists she wasn’t expecting anything to come of the relationship, a year and a half later Kurt moved back to Canada with her. “It was like we’d known each other forever,” she said. “We just got along so well and had so much fun together.”
Both had a strong desire to see the world. They spent the summer travelling around BC together, then went to Australia where they lived together in a van. “We were basically within a foot of each other for three months,” Nadya said of sharing the van. “Some couples would have killed each other if they did something like that. But it’s always just been easy for us.” Since then, they’ve been to more than a dozen different countries together, all around the planet. They’ve also spent extended periods in each other’s native countries.

Kurt was living with Nadya and her family in Pass Creek, just outside Castlegar, when he decided to propose to her at the end of 2010. He invited her to come snowboarding with him at Red Mountain, and on the way down their favourite run he rushed ahead and got down on his knees. “I didn’t know why he stopped, but he was shouting to me to slow down,” Nadya said. He put out his arm to catch her and in the process nearly dropped the ring. “He said,‘I almost lost it,’ and I’m thinking, ‘lost what?’ and then I realized what was happening.” They shared the news with their friends and family, but said the wedding wasn’t going to happen for at least five years. “I knew secretly that it would happen sooner, but I didn’t want the pressure.”

They planned to host an outdoor wedding on Nadya’s parents’ property, where the two of them live in a guest house. They didn’t want to spend more than $4,000 on the event, so not having to rent a venue would be a big money saver. “When I was younger, I wanted the big, fancy dream wedding. But something changed as got older,” she said.“I realized it’s just one day and as long as we have fun and get some good photos, that’s all that really matters.” The couple set their wedding date for July 2013. Kurt’s family came out two months early, to meet Nadya’s family for the first time. “We wanted them to have time to work anything out, if it turned out that they didn’t like each other — but of course they loved each other and everything was fine,” Nadya said. In the lead up to the wedding, Nadya handmade many accessories, including purple bow ties for the groomsmen, butterfly bouquets for herself and the bridesmaids and dresses for the flower girls. She spent countless hours (“and lots of hair pulling”) creating a playlist for the entire event, which they played on a big set of speakers, rather than hiring a DJ.

Her white dress was found for under $200, and her mother-in-law made the alterations. And all the props they used in their wedding photos were free or found, including a rusty old truck that had been parked in a forest and pink couch left on the side of a road. She even made her own wedding cupcakes - the morning of the wedding. “I’d watched the wedding shows and seen people dropping $60,000 or $80,000 on their wedding and I’m so glad we didn’t have to do that,” she said. “I thought, doing everything ourselves, there’d be more things to go wrong. But the day was perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

For Most Brides-To-Be, The Choice of a Dress is Among The First and Most Important Decisions in Planning a Wedding! With thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a difficult and time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a shop, the search will be both easier and a lot more enjoyable. Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend – and don’t forget to include all the little extras such as Lingerie, shoes, jewellery, veil, and/or hair ornaments. Next take inventory of your personal style. If you know that you’re not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options. There will be no shortage of opinions – from mothers, sisters, friends, bridesmaids and store personnel – about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision is ultimately the bride’s alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera to take photos of yourself in the dresses that could be “contenders.” Just ensure that the store does not have a no photo policy before you start snapping the photos, as not all are open to this idea. Remember, your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style.

Melissa Owen still recalls carrying a larger-than-life wedding cake to a client; the cake was so awkward to transport that she had to recruit a friend to help her. Hundreds of tiny blue gum paste flowers cascaded off a chocolate vine that climbed up the alternating square and round tiered cake that towered high above her. As she moved exceedingly carefully to install her creation safely at the venue without catastrophe, it was evident that although the cake was still a valued part of the wedding, it was its participation in the larger theme of the occasion that was the most important. “The entire place was decorated in the same blue as the tiny gum-paste flowers on the cake: the chairs were covered with a swath of blue fabric, the tables were decorated with blue M&M candies and there was even a slushy beverage machine for guests to enjoy,” she recalled. It is always a treat to see how her work fits into a couple’s special day, she said, and a real honour to be invited to share in their vision. Epiphany Cakes started with a lemon poppy seed bundt cake in a Vancouver kitchen in 2001 after Owen completed culinary school at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts on Granville Island in Vancouver. Over time she has honed her skills and developed her own style as she provides product to Nelson and its surrounding communities. Owen is known for her wholesome cakes that never skimp on the “love,” or better yet, butter. She concentrates on using organic and fair-trade ingredients to whip up her creations, from her most popular lemon buttercream to organic carrot and after midnight chocolate. The cake is no longer about the height or girth, West Kootenay bakers agree. Designs for the most part have simplified, variety of requests have widened, but taste remains of top priority. Even one of the oldest businesses in downtown Trail is riding the modern cake trend. Laurel Brost took over ownership of the Pastry Shop about six years ago, after working there for a dozen. Much like hairstyles have diverted from teasing and hairspray, cakes that once towered skyward supported by false bases have now been replaced with cupcake towers, and in some cases, a small companion ceremonial cake for the cutting. Brost lives to bake, putting in up to 16 hours of work a day. But she wouldn’t have it any other way. Though the Pastry Shop’s main seller is its bread treats, the 40-some-year old bakery still puts out classic wedding designs.

Becky Gilhula of Sweet Dreams Cakery in Rossland is glad to see the fruit cake has been put to rest. Known as the “Cupcake Lady” around town, Gilhula is busy providing desserts for about 25 weddings a year and has come to know many fantastic couples through their cake design, which she sees is an extension of who they are and what they want to portray on their wedding day. Gilhula started working in kitchens nearly 20 years ago and always ended up on the baking end of the counter. In 2003 she studied baking and pastry arts in Vancouver, eventually earning her red seal in 2006. She has been stationed in her historical heritage home and bed and breakfast in Rossland since 2010, where she bakes and sees many married in her own backyard. “Cakes don’t have to be just white icing with white decorative piping and a bride and groom topper anymore,” she said. Ironically, with her keen eye for detail one of the skills she has really mastered is creating customized gum-paste bride and groom toppers. Brenna Macintyre, also known as Brenna Bakes or the woman who actually makes her own marshmallows from scratch, laughs when she admits she had gelato at her own wedding. Macintyre is always up for a challenge – just take a look at her sculpted birthday cakes that include a friendly flying dragon with cookie wings and a sophisticated pumpkin maple cake touting a skull atop a tiered base. But she has yet to meet the bride with an outlandish request, acknowledging that most keep it safe and tasteful on their special day. Some diverge from tradition at most by leaning away from classic flavours like lemon.“People like things pretty clean and simple but I think the big thing that has changed is people can have whatever they want, to be honest,” she said.“It’s whatever style the bride is going for, it seems to be all over the map now.”One of her brides chose fresh herbs and local edibles for her Brenna order to match her very natural themed wedding. However, guests enjoyed a bold surprise when cutting into the chocolate cake: sangria wine jelly oozed out from the inside. Baking is in her blood, a talent absorbed from watching her mom in the kitchen. The crafter decided to make it a profession eight years ago and official three short years later. It’s all in the details for the Kootenay School of Arts graduate, whose signature is sugar cookie décor. She’s recently been experimenting with edible paint and would love the opportunity to use a wedding cake as a canvas. “I’m always up for a challenge: sometimes I think midway ‘what the hell have I gotten myself into?’ but I always come out the other side,” she said.

Here Are Some Guidelines For Using Registries Successfully: •
Register three to six month before the wedding. If you register earlier, some seasonal patterns and promotional items may be out of season before your wedding day.

Give yourself plenty of time to select what you like. These are important decisions, and you should think them over. Many brides-to-be initially go into stores alone or browse online to narrow down their selections, then return with their partner to make final decisions.
•
Take advantage of registry consultants. These experts are invaluable sources of advice about everything from wedding etiquette to recommended place setting amounts.
•
Register in a variety of price ranges. Include high-priced gifts for guests who can afford them and less expensive gifts for shower guests and guests on limited budgets.
•
Use your imagination. China, crystal, silver, linen and housewares are classic wedding gifts, and perennial favourites with brides and grooms, but consider registering other items as well. Don’t overlap. Register each item in one store only. Otherwise, you may get frazzled keeping track of gifts that have and haven’t been purchased or end up with duplicates. Never announce your registration in wedding invitations as this implies that gifts are as important to you as guests. Friends and family can make sure word gets out.

Outdoors Pros The Kootenays have a wide array of locations, from beaches to mountaintops. Out-of-town guests will appreciate being shown the spectacular views. You can marry at a spot that’s special to you. Maybe a mountain peak overlooking Kootenay Lake or your favorite hiking/scenic spot. Your wedding photographer will appreciate the opportunities for pictures and the flattering natural lighting. An outdoor venue is more family friendly, giving the tots a place to run around and play. Nature takes care of the decorations, so you don’t have to! A more casual setting might better suit your lifestyles. Marriage commissioners (and some ministers) are prepared to go pretty much anywhere. An outdoor venue is often free and unencumbered by the need to stick to a rigid timetable. An outdoor wedding is pet-friendly, allowing the furry family members to join in too.

Cons Getting you and your guests to a remote spot can take time and cost extra money for transportation. Remember to consider your elderly guests who may be in attendance! The weather! Mother Nature can wreak havoc at an outdoor location with no backup indoor venue. Lugging chairs and all the staging needed for your ceremony into the middle of nowhere can be a time-consuming task. Unless you bring a mirror and makeup supplies with you, the bride and bridesmaids can’t freshen up before the ceremony. Your guests might not be comfortable if it’s cool or windy. A good sound system might be required so that everyone can hear what’s happening. Unwelcome wedding guests can include ants, wasps and mosquitoes. Site setup and breakdown will have to happen on the day, rather than in advance. You may require a permit for some outdoor spaces. An outdoor spot may find the general public wandering through in the middle of your vows.

Indoors Pros No matter the weather, season or time of day, the right temperature and dry conditions are guaranteed. That’s one less thing to worry about! Your guests will be seated comfortably in case of any delays. Washrooms and rooms for final makeup and hair touchups are readily available. Your female guests wearing high heels won’t sink into the landscape. Lighting is continuous, giving your wedding photographer an easier task. Your sounds system, decorations and lighting can be set up well in advance. The bride can make a grand entrance. You may prefer a more formal, traditional ceremony or a religious ceremony. No worries about allergies, sunscreen or bug repellent. Your venue can double as your reception area, meaning more time to enjoy the party and less time spent traveling.

Cons An indoor venue can eat up a significant chunk of your wedding budget. Artificial lighting may not enhance your wedding photos. A small room can feel stuffy, whereas a large room may feel vast and empty. There may be rules on space or permitted decorations. Make sure your guests fit the maximum capacity! Higher demand during the holiday seasons and summer may make your ideal venue difficult to book. If you don’t stick to your time slot, you could end up having to make way for the next event. The atmosphere or decor may work against the mood you’re trying to create. You miss out on the Kootenay’s spectacular scenery as your backdrop for photographs. Limited parking at indoor venues could mean a trek up the road for latecomers. Your photographer/videographer may not have many options for spots from which to capture your special day.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAIR

If there’s one thing you don’t want on your big day, it’s a hairstyle that falls flat before you’ve thrown your bouquet. Trends in bridal fashion have moved away from elaborate updos, in favour of soft and not overly styled hair, worn half up or completely down in big curls or waves. But going for a simpler style doesn’t mean you should skip the trip to the salon. For full, glamorous hair that lasts all day and night, you might need hair extensions, highlights, a range of professional products and tools, and, of course, a skilled stylist to pull it all together. “Even for people who say they’re just having a simple wedding, there’s still a lot of thought that goes into the visual element,” says David Hernandez, co-owner of Enso Hair Salon in Nelson. “You have a theme and a venue so you need a hairstyle to go with it.” Hernandez and fellow co-owner Brian Monroe are both stylists at the 10-yearold Baker Street salon. They’ve done a lot of wedding hair over the years. Typically Enso sees one to three bridal parties, at separate times, every weekend of the summer. Like many salons, Enso is closed to other clients when a wedding’s booked. All of the women in the wedding party come in and a team of stylists get to work making them all look beautiful. Usually makeup and nails are also done at the salon, either by an esthetician on staff or someone the group has brought in with them. If timing’s tight, ladies might even bring their dresses and do all their getting ready right there. “There’s always a timeline for weddings. We need to work fast to make sure everyone’s out the door on time,” Monroe says. In order to work efficiently on the day of, bride and stylist will meet for a trial about a month before the event. She’ll have her hair done up exactly how she wants it for her wedding and decide how she wants the bridesmaids to look. If hair colour or extensions are needed, this is the time to have them done. “Usually people bring in a trendy photograph of the style they like, and we customize it for that person and their hair type,” Hernandez says, adding that celebrity red carpet styles are often a source of inspiration. “We want to make sure the bride feels comfortable wearing the style and that we haven’t done so much that she doesn’t feel like herself.” For people coming from out of town to get married - Enso, for example, is increasingly seeing bridal parties from LA and Vancouver who choose the Kootenays as their wedding destination - the trial is also a time to check out the salon and get to know the stylists. Booking your hair appointments well in advance is important for local and visiting bridal parties alike. “You should book the salon at the same time as your venue, as soon as you have a date and time nailed down,” Monroe says. “Hair is just important as the dress, flowers, and everything else you need for your wedding.”

GETTING MARRIED IN BC OBTAINING A MARRIAGE LICENCE You don’t have to be a British Columbia resident to be married in this province. However, you are required to get a marriage licence in advance. Anyone over 19 years of age is eligible to apply for a marriage licence in B.C. Anyone under 19 must first obtain the consent of both parents. One or both members of the couple can go to the government agent’s office in Nelson, Trail, Grand Forks, Kaslo, Nakusp, or Revelstoke to apply for the licence. The fee for a licence is $100. You need identification which confirms both of your full legal names, birth dates and places of birth. Also needed is proof of your present marital status and the date on which you are planning to marry. The licence will be issued on the spot as long as all necessary identification is provided. The licence is valid for three months.
MARRIAGE CEREMONY In British Columbia, couples can choose a religious or civil ceremony, which must be witnessed by two people over the age of 18. If you are planning a religious ceremony, you can choose a religious representative who must be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency. If you are planning a civil ceremony, book a marriage commissioner registered with the Vital Statistics Agency as soon as you set your wedding date. Civil ceremonies may be conducted at any location. Your commissioner will need to know the date, time and location of the wedding. You should also ask how they would like to be paid and when.
REGISTERING YOUR MARRIAGE AND MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES The marriage commissioner or religious representative will help you to complete the marriage registration form. Within 48 hours of the wedding ceremony, the form should be sent to the Vital Statistics Agency, where the marriage will be registered and a local record will be kept. A legal marriage certificate will be mailed to you by the Vital Statistics Agency. After marriage, you can choose whether to use your maiden name or switch to your spouse’s name at the time. Taking your spouse’s name does not result in a legal change of the name or any automatic change to your identification record. In order to legally change your name, you have to apply to do so.
