When Mohammed Abousaleh looked at his computer screen, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Confirmation of an $80,000 scholarship to the University of Victoria stared back at him – two weeks later, it still doesn’t seem real. “When I first saw it I didn’t really believe what I was seeing,” the Grade 12 Oak Bay High student said. “I just sat there (and) looked at the screen, it was a bit overwhelming. It took a little

while to sink in.” As Oak Bay High school’s lone nominee for the national Schulich Leader Scholarship – awarded to students possessing two of three criteria in outstanding leadership in the community, academic excellence and financial need – the straight-A student said the scholarship will serve as additional motivation to further realize his goals. “The biggest thing is living up to what it means. You can be awarded for certain things but if you just kind of plateau after that, it doesn’t really mean much,”

Abousaleh said. “You have to keep the momentum going. My whole life has been about selfimprovement. I’m always trying to challenge myself more and more and this is going to give me great motivation to do well in university.” In addition to his academic pedigree, the 18-year-old, who came from Syria when he was six, said it’s important to be a leader outside the classroom as well. He volunteers on student council and in leadership class, as a reading buddy and peer tutor for his fellow students and helps with

community fundraisers including the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. “One of the things I like about this school specifically that hit me hard, was the Cops for Cancer they do at the beginning of every year. The passion I saw at the school was overwhelming, everyone was united and it was something I didn’t really see in a school before,” he said. “This kind of unity was kind of new to me.” PlEASE SEE: Unity reflected by peers, Page A4

Residents are asked to dispose of drugs responsibly. Health Canada, in partnership with Public Safety Canada, Partnership for a Drug Free Canada and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police are reminding the public to drop off unused prescription and over-thecounter drugs at their local pharmacy leading up to the second annual National Prescription Drug Drop-off day Saturday, May 10. “We don’t want them to throw them into regular trash, it gets into the water supply, it’s not good for the environment,” said Pharmasave pharmacist Sandi Nelson. “Sometimes (even) people breaking into homes can take them, we don’t want people to take expired medications and we don’t want them in the garbage … for dogs, raccoons and kids.” Safety concerns around the proliferation of unused prescription drugs prompted the joint initiative for the awareness day beginning in 2013. Great teachers have an impact, students say Don Descoteau News staff

Teachers who have a special way of getting their points across that make us feel good or look at things differently do so through personal connections. So who better to ask what makes a great grade school teacher than students who are living that experience daily? In continuing our look at outstanding educators, part of Black Press and Staples’ Great Teachers initiative, supported by Thrifty Foods, we heard from some well-spoken middle and high school students around the Capital Region. We hope the teachers on their list of favourites, those who are really making a difference, will be nominated for Great Teachers awards at vicnews.com/contests. Staples helps kids reach higher Harmen Berghuis, general manager for the Staples School Tools program, says store staff who work with students and families get a sense of how teachers think outside the box when it comes to assignments. What sticks out in his mind are the science fair or heritage day projects on which students aim to reach a little higher. “What we see, especially on the projects that are done by a couple of students or a team of students, is that teachers build into the assignment the ability for co-operation and collaboration even a bit of leadership, perhaps,” he says.

teachers are those who capture students’ attention and “make every class, every hour, engaging.” Not only that, instructors who are organized also get high marks from this honour roll student. “When you’re making use of all the time you have in class, it kind of motivates you to look at other aspects of life,” he says. While he appreciates teachers who aren’t afraid to change their mind, and those who encourage students to draw their own conclusions on discussion points, there has to be balance between flexibility and structure. “One of my teachers is very strict in (that) homework is assigned every night and checked every day. I appreciate that, because it disciplines me in my own learning.” Direct involvement with students strikes a chord with some. Grade 9 Spencer middle school student Daniel St. Laurent, lit up when talking about a shop teacher who builds things and puts them up around the school. “I help him with some of his projects,” Daniel says. “(He also) helps people step out of their comfort zones and try different things.” Mixing things up also keeps things interesting, he adds. “One of my teachers teaches in three different ways. One day he’ll do it through video, another day it’ll be using worksheets and the next it’s talking lessons, having discussions.” Personal connections also allow teachers to make more in headway with individuals who may be having troubles in the

classroom, says Spectrum’ Grade 11 Dezy Manuel. “The best teachers go into a class where everyone is struggling and they make them better. They get people passionate about the subject and use that to their advantage,” she says. “I love teachers who can relate to a student. If they can’t relate (to their teacher) they’re not going to have that (same level of) interest in the subject.” Adds Sophie Adams, in Grade 11 at Edward Milne Community School in Sooke: “To me a great teacher is someone who doesn’t consider themselves a teacher, but a mentor, and a mentor is someone who is passionate about what they’re teaching and develops great relationships with students.” Knowing more about individuals, such as whether they work a part-time job outside school and have a lot on their plate,

Sandi Nelson, a pharmacist at the Oak Bay Pharmasave, hopes residents will take advantage of national Prescription Drug Drop-off Day to safely discard unused or expired prescription medication.

The program is aimed at promoting safe storage and disposal of prescription, over-thecounter and other drugs, reducing the possibility of diversion of drugs and accidental poisonings. “People don’t know how important it is not to have those medications at home. (They) don’t realize pharmacies take them anytime,” Nelson said. “It’s about awareness that pharmacies can take this and it’s not getting into landfills and the water supply.” Both Pharmasave on Oak Bay Avenue and Estevan Pharmacy are accepting unused, and or expired

That shows they care about their students.” Tristan Knapp-Fisher, in Grade 12 at Parkland secondary in North Saanich, agrees. “When you connect (with students), it’s almost like you’re a friend. You can get more of them,” he says. “If (students have) a sense that ‘the teacher really wants to help me,’ they’ll open up a bit. It’s about being a little more human instead of just having it be your job.” Students easily perceive when teachers are not entirely present, he adds. “It’s helpful when the student knows (the teacher is) not thinking about things they have to do (later); they’re being present and actually wanting to help.” Manuel, who serves as a teacher’s assistant in a learning strategies class, adds that excellent educators have something else that differentiates them from others. “They’re usually not just a great teacher, they’re usually just a really great person and they’re positive role models.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

One of a handful of volunteers who knew the more than $50,000 total students had raised for the Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser in 2013 before it was announced, he was proud to be among those to unveil the figure when the riders biked into the assembly in October of 2013. That unity with his fellow students continues with his subsequent role as valedictorian, as voted by his peers, despite being in only his second year at the school. It’s a camaraderie principal Dave Thomson has witnessed first hand. “He is just an all around, really neat kid. You don’t become the valedictorian for a grad class, given the fact a grad class votes, without having an impact on your peers and having them look at (him) as someone who represents them,” he said. “He is (also) a very high academic achiever, if he gets a 95 it’s a surprise, it’s a low mark. the charts academically and brings a whole bunch of mature approaches to the table.” The scholarship, awarded for academic excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, parters with 20 universities in Canada and five in Israel. Abousaleh will be recognized by the Board of Education May 20 and credits his parents for his success as he prepares to finish off his graduating year strong and pursue a computer science degree with a minor in business at UVic, something he said will be a little more comfortable now with this scholarship. “It takes a huge load off and makes it so I can pursue what I’m interested in. Should we trust our leadership? As we press relentlessly toward the looming brink of the highest cliff of extinction, how well prepared are we to do what is right in the circumstances we’re creating? Are the goals we continue to pursue, wise ones in these circumstances? Is it likely that our ancient primitive ancestors possessed sufficient knowledge and wisdom to have created an adequate moral code to guide us through the technological, biological and moral aspects of the now looming crisis? Does our leadership possess real wisdom and capability, or is our ability to survive based mainly on worthless myths and grossly inadequate people? Please think carefully and justify what you say. Get used to the idea that there is no sky-hook to rescue us. While you’re at it, consider whether, through our inflated sense of entitlement, we attempt to live too high on the biosphere hog. Does our system of selecting leaders encourage the emergence of sociopaths in positions of near absolute power? Do you tend to see in leadership candidates, primarily what you want them to be, rather than what a competent psychological assessment might, and subsequent experience will, prove them to be? If we are serious about having sound democracy, shouldn’t we institute mandatory psychological testing of all candidates, with stringent passing standards? When you consider our leadership dispassionately, who among them would you entrust to be the sole guardian of the youngest members of your family? While we’re at reform, consider laws to keep opportunistic business and economists well away from political power. Therein is the cause of our many accumulating environmental catastrophes; gnawing at the very foundations of life on Earth. Have we humans advanced far beyond the mental powers of the corvids (crow family members) in our ability to determine our fate? In fact, no. So we must discount our own hubris from here forward. If you need a better basis for hope than this, you must get serious about recreating it from the remaining shreds of Earth’s biosphere. Accordingly, reconsider what must henceforth constitute a good preparatory education. It may include biology, psychology and physics, but it’s definitely not going to be contributions from the failed priesthoods of religion and economics. Think about it. Talk about it. Start living a sustainable moral life. What is a real moral life? That too needs to be rethought. Nothing to do with some invented god. Let’s all grow up for starters. When I went to buy my first bike, I had my heart set on a beautiful Yamaha R6. It looked brand new and perfect. The seller said it had never been in an accident and had all original parts. I left thinking the next day I’d be riding this beauty home. I paid my $20 (at the time) and found out the bike had been in two accidents with damage of more than $3,000. If you’re buying through a dealership, they might have the bike’s history on hand. It never hurts to double check. The myth of displacements Many new riders like to set a cap on the cc displacement they’re willing to get for their first bike. I had a reader

write me asking what he should get. He’s 6-foot-two-inches tall and 220 pounds with long limbs. He didn’t want anything higher than a 250cc though. He wanted something manageable for his first bike. With long arms and legs, a 250cc bike wasn’t going to fit him. Or vice versa. I told him to look at cruisers, like the Harley-Davidson Sportster, Honda Shadow, Suzuki Boulevard S40, Yamaha Bolt. They might have a higher displacement but they’re going to be work better with his body. I recommend buying a bike you are comfortable on. Test rides Private sellers won’t generally let you test ride, but ask. Dealers are more open, especially with newer models because they have demo fleets. Mechanical inspection If you’re buying used, and you are this close to making the decision, before you go to the bank and give up your savings, spend the extra $100 to $200 to have a motorcycle mechanic to look at your potential purchase. Private sellers will generally ride the bike down to a location of your choice and let the mechanic work their magic. The mechanic will then let you know what things might need to be worked on in the near or distant future. If the seller thinks it’s too much work, then it’s your call if you want to continue to work with them. I wouldn’t buy a bike without knowing what I’m getting onto. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

You’ve got your licence and proper gear, now all you need is a motorcycle. Here are a few things to consider before signing on the dotted line. Budget Establishing a budget is probably the most important thing when it comes to your new ride. Particularly if you’re buying used. You might be tempted to spend an extra couple of thousand on the bike of your dreams. But if the dream bike happens to be a nightmare and costs a fortune on repairs, you might find yourself in a pickle. New or used? There are differing benefits to buying new or used. New bikes have warranties, but a used bike that might not be too old could still have one. Is buying either way better than the other? Not necessarily. Buying used you could get a more upscale model for your budget. Private sale or from a dealership? Buying through a private sale can be a good way to go, especially on a budget. I found my bike online. But if you can’t pay cash up front, dealers generally have financing or payment plan options. Private sales don’t. Dealers also have most likely done a tune-up or some service in preparing the bike for the sale. Check the VIN It might cost you a few extra dollars to run a bike’s VIN through a trusted database but can save you multiple headaches in the end. It will show if the bike has been in any reported accidents and detail

The Audi A7 a luxury fuel sipper Audi is one of the luxury brands under the massive Volkswagen Group, which includes Lamborghini, Bugatti and Porsche. By sharing engineering knowledge, platforms and engines across several different brands, (including the mainstream Volkswagen brand) enables VW to reduce costs and develop more products. One area of importance, in Canada, is the introduction of more and more diesel, or TDI engines, into the marketplace. The 2014 Audi A7 TDI is a perfect example of what the VW Group is doing right. The engine is a fuel-sipping diesel that saves roughly 25 to 30 percent over a conventional gasoline engine, yet still supplies the dynamic ride Audi owners look for. Looks The body of the A7 TDI is the same as the gasoline versions and it could be one of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road. Actually, the A7 could be considered a five-door model, as the rear cargo rear is accessed through a massive hatch. This, in combination

The back is much more subdued and the rear lights look almost Aston Martin-inspired. Inside The downside to the

swept roofline and large hatchback is the amount of headroom for rear seat passengers. Taller passengers might find it a bit snug and big items might not fit in the cargo area. This is why Porsche produced the Panamera sport-back, with a much higher roof for full-sized adult passengers. The reality is that many professionals who can afford this car will more than likely have a family SUV for those times when larger adults or cargo needs to be moved. The front seats enjoy a view to a sumptuous dashboard and luxury filled experience. The best materials are used and I find Audi’s computer controller to be one of the easiest on the market.

Drive Audi uses a variation of its 3.0L direct injection turbo diesel in five of its models from the practical Q5 and Q7 SUVs to the A6, A7 and A8 sedans. This A7, along with the Q5 and A6 get the newest version of this engine sporting a bump in torque from 406 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft. Torque is what it is all about with diesel engines. The ability to get away from a traffic light and cruise along at highway speeds makes a diesel engine a rewarding vehicle to drive. Put the throttle down and this big luxury sedan just rockets away, the way a huge V8 would have in years past. The up side is that the driver gets all that

power but also impressive fuel economy, something that had eluded luxury buyers in the past. The A7 is rated at 8.7L/100km in the city and stingy 5.3L on the highway. In comparison, a 2014 Honda Civic is rated at 5.0L/100km on the highway. For fuel savings and power the diesel is the way to go. Verdict The Audi A7 is a lovely car filled with sex appeal, performance, luxury and prestige that all come at a price. Starting at $72,900, the diesel is a $2,500 premium over the base A7. The owner could recapture that additional money over several years of driving thanks to the improved fuel

During a recent short stay in Los Angeles, I drove a Mazda3i Grand Touring. It’s a trim level not available in Canada, even though Mazda3 is more

For some reason, I’ve been thinking about the “baby years.” Maybe it’s all those puffy pink blossoms triggering memories of a time when everything seemed coloured in pretty pastels. We gathered at my parent’s house for a special dinner and she emerged more dressed than the turkey. I stuffed her into this pink mass of frills and lace, heaved her legs into white tights and stuck little black patent shoes on her feet. Worst of all, my mother took photographs of everyone’s favourite cherub so she will exist forever in pink. But in fact, life became pink all over. Sandy (a woman I met in pre-natal class) and I took to walking through town, pushing our offspring in strollers, talking about nothing that didn’t relate to babies. The sun warmed our faces. We made weird faces and noises. We gurgled, burped, blew, bubbled and sang unlikely little songs. We performed face gymnastics and body contortions – anything to elicit a beatific baby smile. One of the burly, masculine men at our table said, “Try this.” He leaned toward Danica and started clucking. Soon we were all clucking. Then Danica swatted at Sandy, and I murmured offhandedly, “You’re supposed to honk when she touches your nose.” So Sandy honked. Then we all honked. Twenty odd years later, the world is a little bigger and things aren’t so pink (more like green, if I consider the flow of money from my wallet). But I’ve discovered that your babies never really stop being the centre of your universe. Um, just check my Facebook page.

Eleven-yearold Anastasia Bird enjoys all her Grade 5 subjects at Ecole Millstream elementary equally. She played on the school basketball team and will soon try out for track and field. She’s very busy with Girl Guides outside school and is a Sparks leader within that group. She loves to camp and has attended several regional Guides gatherings. She recently received a scholarship to St. Margaret’s, where she’ll attend school in Grade 6 this September.

How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?

That’s tough one. It’s a delicate balance between work and kids. Owning my own company takes up a lot of time. On the weekends, anytime we have together is family time. But in the evening after I put the kids to bed, it’s a good time to catch up with my hubby and regroup. Even sitting with my friend and watching TV is like a mini vacation.

What are you reading right now? What do you read with your son?

Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon, an adventure-style novel. It’s a time-travel book based in Scotland with a lot of folklore. With the kids, we read something different every day. We’ve been doing the Barefoot Books. They come with a CD and you don’t need to censor them, which is good. They sit and listen to stories for hours.

What is your favourite family activity to share together?

I would say going for walks and bike rides is pretty huge for us. We just recently started skateboarding as well. We really enjoy a big plate of nachos together. Going down to

the Causeway and watching the entertainers is also a fun one. We like to maximize our time together.

The part of your day you look forward to the most?

Dinner time. Coming home and having dinner with my family. Generally speaking, my husband will have dinner on the go. We sit down together and decide whether we’re going to have an adventure that night. I feel sometimes that we’re starting to live separate lives, so that coming together time is important. Also first thing in the morning, when the kids jump into bed and discussing what we’re going to do that day.

The seeds of literacy can be sown at any age. As such, many programs in Greater Victoria help parents give their children an early start on reading. Jan Dupuis, a literacy outreach co-ordinator in the Capital Region, helps various organizations and families connect and collaborate. The Greater Victoria Public Library and the READ Society, for example, host a range of programs for families. They target children of any age, Dupuis said, though many focus specifically on the five-and-under group. “Family literacy is focused on parents engaging with their children right from birth with literacy activities,” Dupuis said. Programs focus on reading, writing and numbers at early ages then move to learning with technology later on. Other pro-

grams also encourage singing and cooking together as families, along with other activities. “Literacy really involves those tasks that increase the levels of skill and confidence and selfesteem and really connect the family,” Dupuis said. The Parent-Child Mother Goose program offered at various library branches and community centres brings parents together with their young children to share stories and music. The READ Society hosts the Noisy Kids Reading Club, an after-school program offered through school districts that sees children who could benefit from extra literacy support learn through reading, theatre and educational games. Shantael Sleight is literacy outreach co-ordinator with Your Literacy Connection Westshore. “We’re always looking to get a better understanding on where the needs are, where the gaps

are and what is already in place in terms of improving literacy at any level, “ she said. Books for Breakfast sees families come together with facilitators to read books, sing songs and enjoy a snack, while parents learn effective literary skills to teach their children. Each family gets a new book at the end of each session. The Family Learning Tour, a one-day event in January, sees families learn about informal reading, such as labels and recipes, along with the value of play as a learning tool. The program runs throughout the West Shore. “(Parents) have grown to love reading with their children and showing them how much fun it can be,” Sleight said. “They feel more confident to get out there and try something new and learn with their children.” Visit learnnowvictoria.com or sookewestshoreliteracy.ca to learn more.

Announced last Friday, Genworth will make one adjustment, however. The maximum number of units allowable under the vacation/secondary home program will be reduced from two units to one unit. There will no changes to the business for self program. Canada Guaranty – The private investor group Canada Guaranty, formed in 2010 when the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and National Mortgage Guaranty Holdings Inc. acquired AIG United Guaranty Mortgage Insurance Company Canada, took the same tack as Genworth in light of CMHC’s management plan. Prospective home buyers in Victoria may have a difficult time sealing the deal at month’s end when the country’s national housing agency does away with two insurance products – a move that could spark repercussions across the buyers’ and rental markets alike. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Canada’s leading provider of mortgage loan insurance and mortgage-backed securities, on April 25 announced the discontinuation of its second home and self-employed without a third-party income validation products. After May 30, homeowners with one CMHC-insured mortgage will have to sell said property in order to become eligible for a second. Additionally, self-employed applicants must have two years of unaudited, independent thirdparty validation of their income, as opposed to stating income of year’s past to qualify. While the Crown Corporation claims just three per cent of their business came via such products in 2013 and has no comment on what effects the change may spark, at least one local mortgage planner is willing to venture an educated guess. Kam Brar, mortgage planner with Auxilium Mortgage Corporation in Colwood, puts forward a typical example of a young couple who has bought a new condo a few years ago when the Victoria market was at its peak. “Now you decide to go sell that condo, however, for whatever reason – let’s say it’s not worth

what you owe, or any other reasons – you can’t get out of it right now and you decide you just want to rent it and then buy the other property,” Brar says. Your choices: either sell it, or you live in it, or you find a 20 per cent down payment for the new purchase, to avoid CMHC. “If you’re not turning them into rentals, you’re either going to be living in it or selling. Most of these upgrades are usually condos,” Brar said. “That’s usually the stepping stone to the next property purchase. We’ll see what happens because they’re the feeder pool for the whole market. If you look at it as an eco-cycle. It starts with a small purchase and you move your way up gradually.” Should many potential landlords decide to stay in their condos now, at a time when Victoria has a fairly high number of new condominiums recently completed, Brar says, a lack of used inventory could be quite helpful to developers at this time.
