‘Super heroes’ recognized during Leaders of Tomorrow Awards

BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS An amazing array of accomplishments was cited when 120 youngsters were recognized during the Leaders of Tomorrow Awards ceremony at the community centre last Friday.

With a ‘super heroes’ theme suitably portrayed in decorations throughout, the evening’s recognitions were preceded by a dessert bar featuring cake and ice cream which was enjoyed by everyone.

Then emcee Megan Chernoff, a town councillor, welcomed a capacity crowd of 322 people.

Stating she’d read each of the nominations, she said, “I am in complete awe of the talent, kindness and community con-

scious youth we have in this room tonight.”

Leaders of Tomorrow, she explained, is an annual event which celebrates local youth who make meaningful contributions to our community.

“Teachers, school administrators, coaches, churches, youth leaders and community members nominate youth in three age categories and the group category.

Youth are nominated based on their commitment to volunteering, sports teams, school activities, community involvement and leadership.”

Then the selection committee chooses a winner in each age category and the group category “who they feel demonstrates excellence in leadership”.

Red of financial loss looming for all Albertans News this week of Berkshire Hathaway’s takeover of AltaLink should have Albertans seeing red — as in red ink, the favoured colour to indicate a financial loss.

The reason? Because Albertans have paid for the transmission lines which are the business AltaLink shareholders are selling to the foreign investment giant behind Berkshire, Warren Buffet, for a huge profit.

We’ve lost because we’re forced to pay capital costs for transmission infrastructure we don’t end up owning. And because our government has allowed this company to make a minimum guaranteed annual profit of nine per cent.

Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin, representing the constituency which surrounds us, has been a tireless advocate for a better deal for Albertans.

In question period, in the Alberta Legislature, he blasted the government for allowing Alberta power consumers to repeatedly be gouged.

“Given SNC-Lavalin is going to profit $2.35 billion thanks to Alberta’s taxpayers, and given Alberta’s ratepayers will guarantee Warren Buffet, one of the wealthiest men in the world, an annual income of nine per cent on all future transmission

Immunization saves lives Dear Editor, The timing of the current measles outbreak in Alberta underscores the importance of immunization.

During the first half of the 20th century, preventable diseases killed thousands of people. Outbreaks of measles, whooping cough, polio and other preventable diseases resulted in hundreds of children throughout Alberta dying each and every year.

In the 1950s, preventable diseases such as polio, measles, pertussis, and diphtheria killed one out of every 28,000 people. Today, the number of deaths related to preventable diseases has dropped dramatically, down to one in every 462,500 people. The last person to die from the measles in Alberta was in 1988.

This dramatic decrease in mortality rates is not because these lifethreatening diseases have been eradicated. They’re still here. What’s protecting us is Alberta’s rigorous immunization program.

According to leader Danielle Smith’s news release on the report, she said it validates a December Hydro Quebec report that revealed Edmonton and Calgary are paying some of the highest residential and commercial power prices in North America.

“We receive very little on coal royalties and natural gas prices remain low, yet Alberta businesses somehow continue to be gouged on their power bills,” Anglin said. “The fact is the government continues with a reckless overbuild of transmission lines and presiding over a broken marketplace without recognizing there is a problem.”

Why, when all Albertans, recognize there’s a problem, doesn’t this government make changes to fix it rather than stick stubbornly to their privatization philosophy at our expense.

Now some of our elected town officials are contemplating spending $100,000 on an environmental report and to conduct studies and costs to resurrect a beach area above or below the seawall.

I, for one, do not need a sandy area above or below the seawall to enjoy GOD’S CREATION and be thankful for it.

Spending $100,000 of tax dollars on this issue is an insult to many taxpayers of this community.

Hopefully reality and common sense will prevail.

About 140 bidders gathered from Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan hoping to find what they wanted among 450 items offered for sale. This is one of the largest auctions of its kind in Western Canada and has been running for at least the past 30 years. Prices reflected the interests of those attending.

This group of École Fox Run School students were trained to facilitate the program by a team of family school wellness workers then shared their knowledge with other younger students. The young leaders in this group are in a unique position to influence younger students in their school. They have a credibility that adults do not.

The group of students who dedicated their time and energy to this program were highly motivated and very easy to work with, said their nominator. They were eager to learn the material and practice public speaking and facilitation skills. They were supportive to one another and worked well together. During classroom visits within the school the teams of three were very responsible, attended their commitments on time and worked hard to present the materials to Grade 6 students.

They were great role models to their younger peers.

Their willingness and motivation to educate and work with younger students related to such an important issue

Firefighters to burn house Saturday Sylvan Lake firefighters are going to be practising with a controlled house burn on Saturday.

They’ll be training on property at the southeast corner of Highway 20 and 47th Avenue south of Boston Pizza.

“Firefighters and fire apparatus will be on scene for the duration of the burn,” said Fire Chief Cliff Brausen. “Motorists and residents are advised NOT to contact emergency services, as this is a controlled burn training exercise.”

Alberta children’s author to lead story time at library tomorrow

Samantha Bonwick is coming to Sylvan Lake Municipal Library all the way from Pincher Creek to share her debut novel, Sandcastles, with us.

Featuring soft, warm tones, and gentle washes of colour, Sandcastles is a story about a young girl named Mia, who builds sandcastles while her mother works cleaning houses along the beach.

Throughout the story, Mia builds all sorts of things she thinks would be interesting to have, until she finally recognizes what is truly important to her.

The club is a youth branch of Rotary International. The club is full of youth who want to join together to tackle issues in their community that they care most about. Beyond the Hurt facilitators were presented with the Leaders of Tomorrow award for a group. The Red Cross program is focused on preventing bullying among children and youth. These École Fox Run School students were trained to facilitate the program by a team of family school wellness workers then shared their knowledge with younger students.

Arashi-Do members receive world-class training

BY KEN SUMNER SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Three members of Arashi-Do Sylvan Lake travelled to Calgary to train with Master Sylvio Behring, Apr. 19.

Head of the Arashi-Do Behring Brazilian Jiujitsu Alliance, he is a veteran, starting when he was four, and doing martial arts for 46 years now. Growing up in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, he learned to defend himself at a young age. Now a Master in Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ), he regularly teaches police and private security in Brazil how to defend themselves without hurting their opponent.

Master Sylvio also teaches Brazilian Jiujitsu to some of the sport’s biggest practitioners. On the same day as the grading and seminar one of his students, Fabricio Werdum, competed in the UFC, winning a decision victory over Travis Browne. Fabricio called Master Behring the day of the fight and encouraged all of the students to

cheer for him.

Master Behring completed a grading for the kids first. Shayleigh Charrette, Austin Boles, and Kennedy Bjorgan all received their yellow and grey bar belts. This was in recognition of the skills they have learned in classes recently.

Next Master Behring took the youngsters through a lesson involving how to use Brazilian Jiujitsu to defend themselves, as well as making sure that they are also using their words to defuse the situation, to make sure that no one gets hurt. This use of words while defending yourself is something that many types of martial arts either miss or completely ignore.

Sensei Ken, head instructor of Arashi-Do Sylvan Lake, said, “This type of training is something that we try to do in our school, but to have Master Behring doing this is amazing” Master Behring continued his training with the Arashi-Do Group from April 25-27th.

11:48 p.m. – A 911 call was placed by an employee of Hockey Central Sports Lounge in Sylvan Lake after two male patrons walked away from the bar without paying the bill. One of the males was located by police a short time later and paid the bill. The complainant waived any charges.

Tuesday, April 29th 12:32 a.m. – A noise complaint resulted in police attending the Broadway Rise apartments in Sylvan Lake. A male was observed by witnesses sitting in a truck with loud music blaring.

A constable questioned the 28-year-old Sylvan Lake male who exhibited signs of impairment yet was not in operation of the motor vehicle. The male was arrested at the scene and brought to cells until sober.

5:06 p.m. – A witness reported to RCMP that two males were causing a disturbance on Lakeway Boulevard in Sylvan Lake.

They were intoxicated and observed drinking on the hood of a vehicle and smoking from a drug pipe. The males were then seen getting into the vehi-

cle to depart the area. The vehicle plate was obtained by the witness and given to police who located the vehicle. A 19 year old Red Deer male, a GDL driver, was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Wednesday, April 30th 5:06 p.m. – RCMP attended Sylvan Lake skate park after a complaint of young males climbing to the top of the storage buildings and ripping shingles off the roof.

Youths at the park were questioned but no one was seen on the roof of the buildings at the time police arrived. Police are increasing patrols in the area.

Saturday, May 3rd 12:39 a.m. – A 911 call was received by RCMP dispatch of a fight in progress at Eckville Hotel.

Members attended the bar but those involved had departed. The employee called back approximately ten minutes later and advised that the same male involved in the first fight had returned and was fighting again. A 22-year-old Eckville male was located and arrested.

He was lodged in cells until sober.

Hannah Caines - Hannah is an ambitious young lady who is always positive and friendly. She is wellliked by her peers and takes her responsibilities very seriously. Hannah always comes to meetings ready to share her ideas and gives her full effort when volunteering with younger children. She is a wonderful role model.

Madison Cunningham - Madison is a kind and caring student who is always thinking of others. She is always the first to offer words of encouragement along with a hug and a tissue if you need comforting. Madison has donated her birthday money to an orphanage and the SPCA rather than accepting gifts on two occasions. She is a great example to all of us in how we should live our lives.

Lauren Murphy - Lauren is an all-around great kid who is full of energy and sensitive to others needs. She has a silly side that can be used to make anyone laugh on a bad day. Lauren has just moved to a new school this year and already has shown outstanding leadership in her classroom, her positive attitude and care towards others are both qualities of a great future leader.

Baylee Retzer - Baylee is a bundle of energy who brings positivity wherever she goes. She is a great friend and role model to her peers and adapts easily to any situation. She pitches in whenever something needs done by preparing snacks, cleaning up after a messy art project of helping to lead a game. She is a joy to be around!

The event will pair seniors with elementary school students. Together, they’ll be asked to walk a set path in Centennial Park, where they’ll ask each other specific questions posted along the route.

• What was/is your favourite school subject and why?

• What hobbies or activities do you like to do?

Manoeuvring - Kayakers Jaden Thorne and Jered Jarvis, just off

the provincial park, enjoyed smashing their crafts through the deteriorating ice last Wednesday afternoon. Ice continues to cover a large portion of the lake, although some movement has been noticed. A snow storm Saturday night and through Sunday contributed a layer of white stuff but that was disappearing on Monday.

A parent appreciation dinner for the parents of the Girl Power and Boyz Unlimited participants was held last Thursday at the community center.

The kids did all the decoration, set up, cooking and the serving. There was also entertainment by the kids.

We had a wonderful video of some good times that the kids enjoyed throughout the year. It was a special surprise for all the parents and kids that was put together

by Cinzia Cappella who was also the MC. Krista Carlson, FCSS youth services supervisor, was thanked for having such a great program for the community.

The staff leaders for the groups are Deshon Lennard, Joseph Hoang, Nicole Vikse and Jenny Bell while Payton Frederick and Nicole Hartley are youth volunteers for the Girl Power program and Tessa Rooyakkers provided relief work for the Girl Power program.

Boyz Unlimited is a drop-in program at Sylvan Lake Youth Centre for boys ages

9-13 years. This free program is designed to assist young boys in developing positive self-image, healthy adult and peer relationships and an active lifestyle. The activities for the program are planned by the youth and facilitated by Youth Leaders, Deshon Lennard and Joseph Hoang. Some of the activities the boys participated in this year included a make your own pizza night, snow football, First Aid training, and ball hockey tournament fundraiser.

Boyz Unlimited meets Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m., September to May. Girl Power is a drop-in program at Sylvan Lake Youth Centre for girls ages 9-13 years. This free program promotes positive self-esteem, healthy relationships and active living in young girls. Activities for the program are planned by the youth and facilitated by youth leaders, Jenny Bell and Nicole Vikse. Some of the activities girls participated in this year included creating dream boxes, making tye-dye t-shirts, hosting a fashion and talent show and planning a hot chocolate stand fundraiser.

Girl Power meets Tuesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m., September to May.

Cleanup

Shelley Dyrland, Barb Burns, Zach Burns and Darcy Dyrland of Withrow Gospel Mission collected garbage along Highway 11 just west of Range Road 21 near Sylvan Lake Saturday. The group was one of many participating in the province’s highway cleanup campaign along roadsides throughout the morning and afternoon.
