Welcome

City of Courtenay

Courtenay Recreation

Smiles & Healthy Lifestyles!

One of the signs that warmer weather is on the way is the seasonal opening of the Courtenay Memorial Outdoor Pool, happening this year on June 2nd. The outdoor pool is a summertime fixture in the Comox Valley, and kids and adults have been learning to swim there since 1949. Some programs at the outdoor pool may have changed somewhat over the years – I don’t think they had any classes called “Liquid Muscle Aquacize” back then – but classes still include the fundamentals of learning to swim, or even how to become certified as a lifeguard. Private lessons are also available. If you’re looking for a fun activity for a birthday party or other event, a pool rental is a great option. Kids will also enjoy the adjacent wading pool and water park, both open free to the public. Changes for 2014 include new bleachers, wading pool upgrades, and accessibility improvements. Did you know that the outdoor pool has been heated with solar power since 2011? To find out more about the outdoor pool, or the many other programs offered by Courtenay Recreation, check out the pages of this Recreation Reporter.

Introduction to Disc Golf

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s, and shares with “ball golf” the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws). Disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway. There are few differences, though. Disc golf rarely requires a greens fee, you probably won’t need to rent a cart, and you never get stuck with a bad “tee time.” Please put your name on our interest list for a June start.

Playground Structures Playing Safe and Fun! As a result of feedback received from a number of neighbourhoods, City staff, and through the City’s playground review process, three new playgrounds have been installed in Courtenay neighbourhood parks this Spring. Martin Park (20th Street and Choquette Avenue in West Courtenay), Malcolm Morrison Park (Embleton Crescent in West Courtenay), and Sandwick Park (Muir Road in East Courtenay) have each received new playground structures. Parks safety was also a key factor in the decision to replace this old equipment. These playgrounds have been replaced with new structures that meet current safety standards. Stay tuned for playground openings in each neighbourhood. For more information contact the City of Courtenay Community Services Department at, parks@courtenay.ca or 250-334-4441

To book a park or play field, call the Lewis Centre at 250-338-5371. Courtenay Recreation coordinates the use of all parks and school playing fields located in the City of Courtenay. Field Closures: Fields may be closed due to weather conditions. We would appreciate your cooperation in not using the fields during these times.

Each year, more than 10,000 children are injured at playgrounds in Canada. Children using Courtenay parks and playgrounds should be appropriately supervised based on their age, development and abilities. Depending on the park, playground equipment is intended for children aged 18 months to 12 years. If you see any unsafe conditions in our parks and playgrounds, please report them. Call 250-338-1525 or 250-338-5371. Thank you!
