The Ktunaxa Nation has launched a legal appeal against a B.C. Supreme Court ruling about the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort.

The First Nation announced on Monday, May 5, that it has filed papers with the B.C. Court of Appeal.

The decision comes after the Ktunaxa argued in a judicial review that Jumbo Glacier Resort violates its charter rights to religious freedom by desecrating land that is sacred to them, which the Ktunaxa know as Qat’muk.

As has been reported several times in the last few weeks, there has been a rash of thefts from vehicles, mostly in Marysville. Thefts have been occurring in the residential areas of Marysville and also from cars parked at the Rails to Trails.

In the instance of the Rails

to Trails theft, car windows have been broken to access purses and wallets left in vehicles while the drivers hiked or biked on the trails.

In the residential thefts, vehicles have mainly been left unlocked and small change and other items taken.

Kimberley RCMP are urging residents to take precaution against theft.

The most important thing

to remember is to remove all valuables from your car.

Never leave valuables visible. Put items such as bags, laptops and tool boxes in the truck. Don’t do this when you park as you could be observed by a potential thief. Stow your valuables before you set out, or better yet, if you are going for a hike, leave them at home.

Lock your vehicle, even if you are just running in and

out of a store. Police advise that it only takes a few seconds for criminals to steal valuables from your vehicle, or the vehicle itself. Never leave keys or a key fob in your vehicle, no matter how short the stop.

If you happen to be driving by any of the parking areas for trails and see any sort of suspicious activity, call the Kimberley RCMP at 250-427-4811.

A Cranbrook woman is vying to be named Extreme Huntress 2015.

Nikita Dalke is one of 20 semi-finalists in the competition that looks for a female hunter who will be a role model for other women who participate in hunting.

“The Extreme Huntress is of course a woman that hunts, but hunts hard and puts lots of passion and effort into it and truly loves the sport,” said Niki- Nikita Dalke is vying for the title of Extreme Huntress. ta. “(She) also understands the importance of

nalists with the highest number of votes will win a ticket to the 777 Ranch in Dallas, Texas, where they will compete for the title of Extreme Huntress 2015. The contest, which is held in July, will pit the six women against one another in a hunting skills competition.

The Extreme Huntress is the fete of a banquet at the Dallas Safari Club, and receives a sculpture and prize package.

“It could possibly open a lot of doors for me in the hunting industry as well,” said Nikita.

The Cranbrook woman, with two kids aged six and three, grew up competing in dressage and showjumping competitions.

Her grandmother hunted and would take Nikita out when she was young, but it wasn’t until Nikita met her husband Kyle in 2005 that she started hunting herself.

“Our whole lifestyle is around being outdoors: camping, hiking, fishing, hunting, and archery,” she said. “Hunting is a family activity for us; my husband hunts and we take our two kids out with us as much we can.”

The East Kootenay is an idyll for hunters, Nikita went on.

“There is great opportunity here to hunt animals that people can only dream of! Anything from turkey and small game to bighorn sheep and mountain goat – we have it all. And the scenery we have is to die for!”

Last year, Nikita met Extreme Huntress judge Olivia Nalos Opres in Kalispell, Montana, and it spurred her to enter the competition.

A Kimberley couple has reached a significant milestone in their lives. Alan and Elizabeth (Betty) Zaleschuk, above, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 1. The Zaleschuks were married in Nelson on May 1, 1954 (right) by Father Hurko (Ukrainian Catholic Church). They moved to Kimberley in 1958 where they raised their two daughters Shirley and Dianne. This past weekend, Father John Kellogg of the Sacred Heart Parish in Kimberley presented them with a Papal Blessing from Pope Francis.

Jumbo Glacier Resort has been approved by the B.C. government to begin construction on Jumbo Glacier, 55 kilometres west of Invermere.

To the Ktunaxa, Qat’muk has great spiritual significance for its people as the home of the grizzly bear spirit.

“As Ktunaxa, Qat’muk has always and will always be sacred, despite what any court tells us,” continued Teneese. “We will continue to fight the construction of the Jumbo Glacier Resort and appreciate the support we have received from the many non-Ktunaxa organizations, Kootenay residents and people far and wide who oppose this development.”

The appeal will be heard in the British Columbia Court of Appeal later this year or in early 2015.

That fits her, Nikita went on.

“I have stood up against a lot of anti hunters to help support fellow hunters and to defend myself and my lifestyle.

“I love teaching my kids everything I know and helping to guide them.”

She tells people that hunting is important to her because it provides

healthy meat, it keeps wildlife populations at healthy levels, and it teaches good values.

“It teaches you important skills like survival, patience, ethics and humility,” she said.

‘Vocational school’ back in style

T

he B.C. government has rolled out its ambitious overhaul of the public education system, from kindergarten to graduate school, much to the horror of its leftwing establishment.

The formal title is B.C.’s Skills For Jobs Blueprint: Re-engineering Education and Training. It’s designed to dovetail with the Harper regime’s Canada Job Grant that requires employers to co-sponsor training spaces so they will hire the students at the end.

Elementary and middle school curriculum is being revised to increase emphasis on hands-on experience. High school and post-secondary skilled trades programs are getting more money, but it’s going to be shifted from under-performing programs that don’t lead to jobs.

Premier Christy Clark took another swipe at the bias of B.C.’s system before heading to Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong on another liquefied natural gas sales trip. She noted that 20% of B.C. students, and nearly half of aboriginal students, don’t finish high school.

“Not only are there kids who don’t graduate, there are kids who graduate, go out and get one or two credentials before they finally find their way into a skills training program,” said Clark, who had her own wander through university campuses before going into politics.

A couple of weeks ago, Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter downplayed the “relatively small” skilled trades shortage for B.C. industry.

“We should not be engaged in a zero-sum kind of battle for dollars,” Petter protested. That’s exactly what he and other university executives are looking at, and it will be based on the latest graduate employment data and labour demand forecasts.

BC VIEWS One of the key architects of this sweeping plan is JesTom sica McDonald, who shook Fletcher up the public service while serving as Gordon Campbell’s deputy minister.

Her report on trades training confirms what Campbell’s critics in the labour movement have long said: the government’s 10-year experiment with the Industry Training Authority is a rudderless mess.

“Certain partners, particularly organized labour, feel marginalized,” McDonald wrote. “Others, particularly employers and employers’ associations, do not feel heard within the system. Over the recent past, several new directions have been introduced such as de-regulation of trades and modular training that have caused strain because they were not fully inclusive during development, were seen to benefit single interests, and they impacted the whole system.”

ry councils from industrial employers will update their hiring needs.

The B.C. Federation of Labour and the construction unions have all but abandoned the NDP after Adrian Dix’s disastrous pitch for urban anti-industry votes last year. B.C. Fed president Jim Sinclair was an early advocate for rescuing skilled trades from the second-class status they received in a culture fixated on university for two generations.

That culture has created glaring problems. There are too many institutions offering the same courses. As with health care, block funding is handed out without any serious effort to measure the results.

For many students, university has become an extension of adolescence, finding one’s self through philosophy or film studies.

Employers get their share of blame from McDonald. Not only did they chop up trades training to make it cheaper to obtain, their preferred source of skilled workers has been to poach from other employers who paid to train them.

Skills-based employment data will be made public for students to make career choices. Finally, students coming out of high school will have a way to assess what they can expect after $50,000 or more is spent on higher education.

It’s about time.

The Kimberley Pipe Band brought fame and lots of hardware home this weekend. They attended the Annual Spring Fling Pipe Band Competition in Kamloops and won the Best Overall Band. Nine bands from the Interior, Kootenays as well as the Vancouver City Police Band participated in this fun-filled event. Different components of the competition were: Dress Drill and Deportment, they placed second; Perform a Skit or Sing a Song, they placed first; Perform a Dance, they placed first; Piping, they placed third; and Medley, they placed third. When the total aggregate points were added, your local pipe band came out on top, winning the trophy for Best Overall Band. Congratulations to Pipe Major Dave Ekskog and the hard-working Kimberley Pipe Band. High school baseball wraps up with weekend tournament JESSIC A C AMPBELL

Two high school baseball teams faced off in weekend action at Confederation Park in Cranbrook. When the dust had settled, the Mount Baker Wild had prevailed over the Selkirk Storm.

The two-game series took place Friday and Saturday, May 2 and 3.

Prior to the series, Wild coach Josh Lowden said his team was hungry for some wins, and was looking for a good start to Friday’s game.

“The boys have worked hard in practices,” Lowden said. “We were coming off two tough losses to the Kootenay Valley Rangers last Sunday (May 27). I believe the Wild will be hungry for some wins this weekend and will show up ready to play hard.”

The Wild won Friday’s game 10-2 and Saturday’s 11-1.

Lowden said Devon Marra led the Wild with his offensive and defensive abilities throughout

the year and this past tournament.

“Tyler Thorn also pitched a full game against Selkirk for the win on Saturday,” Lowden said. “I’m very proud of the way the team rebounded from a tough loss to L.V Rodgers on the past Sunday, in order to win the last game of season against Selkirk.”

Selkirk Storm coach Fraser Armstrong lamented a few mental errors that may have made a difference.

“I think there were some mental errors from the team at the tournament because we played well against Nelson and managed to beat them,” Armstrong said. “We did have a string of bad luck in that first inning though and it was hard to bounce back from it.”

High school aged players from the East Kootenay will now be moving on to American Legion play with the Cranbrook Bandits taking on teams from the U.S. and Alberta.

Wild get 4-0 win over Chicago in Game 3 ASSOCIATED PRESS

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Erik Haula and Mikael Granlund scored goals less than 3 minutes apart early in the third period, and the Minnesota Wild recovered from a sluggish start for a 4-0 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal series.

Ilya Bryzgalov made 19 saves for his first shutout in the playoffs in

eight years, and the Blackhawks had their lead whittled to 2-1 with their first loss in 2 1/2 weeks.

Zach Parise put the exclamation point on the win with a power-play goal, the first in 25 chances for the Wild over their last two playoff series against the Blackhawks. Then Granlund tacked on an empty-netter with 1:17 left.

Game 4 is Friday in Minnesota.

Oil Kings top Winterhawks 3-2; Portland leads series 2-1 SHANE JONES Canadian Press

EDMONTON — Edgars Kulda’s goal with 6:47 remaining in the third period was the winner as the Edmonton Oil Kings bounced back from an early 2-0 loss to remain in the running in the Western Hockey League championships, defeating the defending champion Portland Winterhawks 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Henrik Samuelsson and Luke Bertolucci also scored for the Oil Kings, who are now 9-0 on home ice in the playoffs to cut Portland’s series lead to 2-1.

Chase De Leo and Mathew Dumba responded for the Winterhawks, who suffered just their fourth loss in their last 46 games, a string of success running all the way back to Jan. 11.

As has been the case in every game in the series, the Winterhawks came out flying to grab an early lead in the game, scoring twice in less than a minute to go up 2-0 on their first three shots before the game was even four min-

utes old.

Portland struck 2:38 into the first period as a big bounce off the boards came out front to De Leo and he spun and beat Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry with a shot to the top corner for his 10th goal off the playoffs.

Just 52 seconds later it was 2-0 Portland, as Brendan Leipsic fed a pass to defender Dumba in the slot and the Minnesota Wild draft pick made the most of the opportunity.

Edmonton allowed goals in the first three minutes of the first two games of the series as well, and was outscored by a combined 5-0 in the first periods of its opening two losses of the series in Portland.

Despite the early deficit, the Oil Kings fought back to outshoot the Hawks 19-10 in the opening frame, however Portland goalie Corbin Boes stood his ground.

Edmonton got on the board four minutes into the second period with a power play goal as Curtis Lazar made a perfect pass across to Samuelsson at

the side of the net and the Phoenix Coyotes prospect sent his fifth of the playoffs into a wide-open net to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Oil Kings pulled even with nine minutes remaining in the second period as Bertolucci picked up a loss puck and went in on a breakaway, only to be pushed down from behind by Dumba. However, Bertolucci got right back on his feet and was able to make a nifty move to freeze Boes on the deke for his sixth of the post-season.

It appeared the Oil Kings had taken the lead just over a minute later on a mad scramble in front of the Portland goal, however, a lengthy review concluded that Samuelsson had kicked the puck into the net.

Jarry made several key saves during the first half of the third period to keep it a tied game, none bigger than an early glove save on Taylor Leier.

Edmonton took their first lead of the entire series with just under seven minutes left

in the third as Mitch Moroz sent a puck in front and Kulda was able to redirect it into the net to put the Oil Kings up 3-2.

Portland furiously tried to knot the game back up in the late stages and had a great chance in the dying seconds, but Dumba shot a puck over the net. Jarry faced 15 shots in the third and 37 in the game.

Game 4 of the WHL Finals takes place on Wednesday, also in Edmonton.

Notes: It’s the third consecutive season that the Oil Kings and Winterhawks are meeting in the WHL Championship Series. Edmonton defeated Portland in seven games to win in 2012, while Portland won in six games last year. It is Portland’s fourth consecutive trip to the league championshipsa It is just the second time in league history that two teams have met in the WHL final three years in a row. The last time was when the original Edmonton Oil Kings (who ended up moving to Portland to become the Winterhawks) played the Flin Flon Bombers three times from 1969-71

Wasa Fun Daze Jessic a C ampbell

Come out and enjoy a fun-filled day with your family and friends at Wasa Fun Daze on Saturday, May 31.

There will be lots of food, fun games and events going on and it’s free admission to the grounds.

There will be a pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m to 11 a.m and a lunch from 12 p.m to 5 p.m. There will be a parade, children’s game booths, a sand castle competition, old-fashioned bingo in the Wasa Community Hall from 1 p.m to 4 p.m and live entertainment throughout the day from local bands that have volunteered their time for the event, a garage sale and much more.

“It’s a fun event that provides lots of support to the Wasa community,” said coordinator Wilma Harding.

All proceeds from the garage sale, vendor tables and other draws will go to the Wasa Lions Club.

The money raised by the Lions Club goes back into the Wasa

community. Among their many contributions, the Lions help maintain the Wasa Lake trail. The club also helps members of the community who are in need, for instance after a serious event like a house fire.

They also provide support for those who need money for medical equipment such as wheelchairs or hospital beds in their homes.

“This fundraiser started many years ago so that the Lions Club could help the community in such a way,” said Julie Kneller, also coordinator of the event. “I hope people come out to show their support. It hasn’t been as popular in a few previous years but we’re really hoping for a big turnout this year.”

Anyone who wants to be involved in the parade either by having their own float or walking can contact Wilma Harding at 250427-1767. If you want to donate clean, gently used items to the garage sale you can contact Val at 250-4223499.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: When my birthday was coming up, I told my wife about a piece of technology I really wanted and asked her to buy it for me. It cost $300. She said it was too expensive and didn’t get me anything except a card.

In the past three weeks, she has purchased three birthday gifts for friends, each costing roughly $100. She put in a ton of effort to find exactly the right gift.

Am I justified in feeling hurt by this snub?

Should I talk to her about it, or am I being petty? -- Ignored Dear Ignored: We certainly can understand why you would be miffed that your wife has no problem spending $300 on friends and nothing on you. But some people don’t like being told what to buy, because it takes all the joy out of the occasion. Or perhaps your wife disapproved of the piece of technology you wanted. Or maybe she thinks you could get these things for yourself, especially if the money comes from the same account.

We suspect your real issue is that your wife seems to value her friends more than her husband. This certainly merits a discussion.

Please talk to your wife. Tell her you are hurt and ask whether more is going on than meets the eye.

Dear Annie: It’s graduation time again. A while back, a teacher asked you about graduation gifts for students. You said, “Many graduates deeply appreciate a personal letter from a teacher expressing positive thoughts about the student.”

Teachers, please don’t underestimate that final statement. For those who feel obligated to give something more tangible, an inexpensive gift representing your relationship with the student along with a personal note would also be treasured.

I know. I received such a gift 30 years ago -- a piece of music that our band performed.

And while I appreciated the monetary gifts from my relatives, that small gift is the one that still touches me the most deeply.

I’m a parent now. I know that teachers don’t make a great deal of money, but still get invited to a lot of graduation parties.

We’d rather have the teacher at the party to give our kids a final word of encouragement than have them stay away for lack of a present.

To my fellow parents: Graduation is such a busy time, but I ask that when inviting a teacher, coach, church youth leader or any other adult who may have had a positive effect on your children’s lives, please include a personal note in the invitation. Here’s mine: “Having you as a music teacher has meant so much to ‘Sally’ that we would be honored if you could join us in celebrating her graduation. You already have given her the priceless gift of a passion for music, so please don’t feel obligated to bring anything else. Your presence at her party would be the greatest gift you could give her.” -- Maryland Parent Dear Maryland: Thank you for reminding teachers, parents and students that personal notes of appreciation, whether accompanied by gifts or not, are cherished for years to come. Now is the time to get started.

Dear Annie: My eyes teared up reading the letter from “Lucky and Appreciative Married Man” and the kind things he said about his wife.

I am 30 years old and have been married for three years. I can only hope that one day my husband, whom I love dearly, is as grateful for me as I am for him. Until then, I will continue to cook dinner, wash our clothes, shovel the snow, mow the lawn, pay the bills and beg for his attention. 1929 - 2014 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Robert Moore announce his passing on Friday, April 25, 2014 in Kimberley at 84 years of age.

Bob was born on August 24, 1929 in Langdon, Alberta.

He had seven children, 21 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Bob was a very hardworking and honest man. He was much loved by his wife and family and will be sadly missed.

Jenna and her family moved from St. Albert to Kimberley in October of 2000 when she was 2 years old. Jenna fell in love with the beauty and nature of the Kimberley area and her love for the outdoors started to develop. Jenna also discovered a love of drawing and she flourished in her drawing skills. It was not too often that Jenna did not have a pencil and paper in her hand!

Jenna will be fondly remembered for her vivacious and adventurous spirit. The outdoors is where she was happiest - on her mountain bike, in a lake or river, skiing down her favourite run on a powder day, or sitting under a tree being creative with her pencil and pad. Jenna loved being around her family and friends. She loved life and all it had to offer. Regardless of the activity, Jennaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enthusiasm was contagious which always made being in her presence a great joy.
