The First Nation says Supreme Court does not respect sacred relationship with Qat’muk S A L LY M AC D O N A L D Townsman Staff

Celia (Michelle Lemay) and Chris (Killeen Delorme) have a friendly rivalry going on over the costumery for the Women’s Institute Christmas gathering. Celia and Chris are two of the six women who will soon be breaking free of the traditional restraints of the Women’s Institute, baring all for charity. “Calendar Girls” is going to take them to places they never expected. The latest production by the Off Centre Players opens tonight, Tuesday, May 6, at Centre 64 in Kimberley. See more, Page 2.
The Ktunaxa Nation has launched a legal appeal against a B.C. Supreme Court ruling about the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort. The First Nation announced on Monday, May 5, that it has filed papers with the B.C. Court of Appeal. The decision comes after the Ktunaxa argued in a judicial review that Jumbo Glacier Resort violates its charter rights to religious freedom by dese-
crating land that is sacred to them, which the Ktunaxa know as Qat’muk. After hearing the judicial review in January, Justice John Savage ruled on April 3 that the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations had adequately consulted the Ktunaxa prior to approving the four-season resort in 2012 and did not infringe on the Ktunaxa’s constitutional rights.

Barriers still slowing business down, Chamber says A R N E P E T RYS H E N Townsman Staff
The majority of Cranbrook businesses find that there are still barriers to business, a Chamber survey found.
Last week, the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce released its Phase II report summarizing the results of the Barriers to Business survey recently undertaken by a
sample of its members. Many of the 17 businesses surveyed found difficulties dealing with the city, with an average of 3.2 out of 10 for overall experience. The report includes
written summaries of the responses to survey questions, along with numeric assessments of the clarity of processes, timing and costs for doing business in the community.
“Rather than focusing on individual experiences, we looked for common themes; areas where experiences were positive or negative,” said Dave Butler, Chamber president. “The

survey results show us there’s lots of work to do yet to ensure we have a welcoming atmosphere for business.”
