private corporations de facto ownership over publicly owned land” with its proposed shift to area-based forest tenures. Speaking to reporters afterward, Dix said he is proud that he moved the government toward an emphasis on skills training, with changes to apprenticeships and post-secondary laid out by B.C. Liberal cabinet ministers this week. “And while I’m not happy with the approach the government’s taken, clearly that issue is now on the top of the public agenda and we forced it,” Dix said. In his pre-election budget last year, Finance Minister Mike de Jong raised corporate income tax one point to 11 per cent, half as much as Dix had proposed, and raised personal income tax for those earning more than $150,000 by 2.1 per cent for two years. Dix said it’s frustrating not to be in government to deal with issues he championed, such as worker safety after a series of fatal incidents involving farm and sawmill workers. Horgan is acclaimed as NDP leader after Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth dropped out of the leadership contest and endorsed him April 8.

Roller derby opener didn’t pull punches Submitted The East Kootenay Roller Derby League season opener took place in front of over 100 spectators on April 26th at the arena in Canal Flats. The event began with an exhibition game between Kimberley’s Bavarian Barbarians and the more experienced Calgary Cut Throat Carhops. The Barbarians came out strong with veteran Jammer Stroker weaving her way through the pack to pick up points for her team. The Barbarian blockers played tough and took some hard hits, one ending with Ruby Ka-BOOM on the bench nursing a bloody nose. Unfortunately the Barbarians couldn’t keep up with the larger, faster Carhops and the game ended with a final score of 228-73 for the
Carhops. The second game of the night saw a matchup between the 2012 league champions, Invermere’s Killer Rollbots against the EKRDL’s newest team, the Elkford Wildcat Brawler’s. Although new to Roller Derby, the Brawler’s have some great raw talent, with Jammer’s Hyda Smack Ya, Wild Thyme and Hurricane Alli ripping up the track supported by some great Blocker’s. In the end, Invermere’s experience won over the Brawler’s determination, with a final score of 221 to 129 for the Rollbot’s. The EKRDL would like to thank all of their volunteers, sponsors and members for making the season opener a success, and can’t wait to see all of their fans at the next double

Basic health tips
With life and science getting so seemingly complex, I thought I would simplify things this week with a few basic tips that you can apply day to day to improve your health. And it all starts with chewing. At your next meal pay attention to how you chew your food. Good health starts with eating slowly and chewing your food. Upton Sinclair once said "nature will castigate those who don't masticate." Eating slowly and chewing well allows for the proper digestive enzymes to be released onto food that has been properly broken down. Many people have reflux disease (heartburn) simply because they eat fast and don't chew their food. Good health also starts with eating breakfast. Those who eat breakfast eat less throughout the day, have lower levels of LDL cholesterol (the cholesterol that contributes to heart disease), have lower risk of gall stones and painful menstrual periods and have better insulin sensitivity and a lower risk of type
II diabetes. Don't skip meals. Irregular eating patterns promotes insulin resistance and increases total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol compared with eating regularly. Eat raw, boil or poach your food. Frying, broiling and roasting promotes the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE's) which in turn increase inflammation, promote atherosclerosis, speed up diabetes and make us age faster. Junk foods are high in sugar, have few useful nutrients, are deprived of any fibre, loaded with oxidized fats, trans fatty acids and additives. Junk food can cause Hypoglycemia syndrome: sweating, weakness, hunger, irritability, nervousness and anxiety from blood sugar that swings high and then low. Staying away from junk foods can be a simple change that will improve your health in many ways. These tips are not meant to make you live like a Saint, apply them most of the time (some of the time in a pinch) and your health will improve.

National Child and Youth Mental Health Day: one mother’s story
Photo Michelle evans
Kassy Evans during a happier time in her life. by Brian Coombs There is the surface, where everything is visible. Beneath the surface however, in the lives of the people we see at the coffee shop, at work or at a public event, there often hides a darkness, a secret pain obscured from view by embarrassment and from society’s unwillingness to look at something uncomfortable. Michelle Evans wants to shine a light on the
darkness that engulfed her family and in doing so, hopes to make life a little brighter for sufferers of child and youth mental illness. “People with mental illness keep it to themselves,” said Michelle. “They don’t share it with others.” And Michelle’s story starts as commonplace as most families. “My husband and I had two children. We had a son and 14 months later, we had a daughter.
About a month before her 11th birthday, her whole world fell apart,” explained Michelle. She said that Kassy had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and the disease manifested itself with a focus on germs. At first, she wouldn’t go on furniture the family cat had been on. This progressed to clothing the cat had touched and even to rooms it had been in. Eventually, Kassy couldn’t bring herself to hug family members. The fear of germs, combined with a teenagers obsession about body image, culminated in Anorexia by the time Kassy was 16. The family took her for counselling in the city, but soon found that they had to take her to the Children’s Hospital in Calgary. She also became an outpatient at the B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver and even spent time in the Kelowna adolescent psychiatric ward along with the Cranbrook adult psychiatric ward. “Kassy was brilliant.
Her average mark in high school was 99.3 per cent,” said Michelle. “Kassy knew it didn’t make sense, but the disease kept overruling Kassy’s thoughts.” So Kassy attempted suicide on multiple occasions. On approximately five occasions she was involuntarily admitted under the Mental Health Act. There was a brief, few-month period after a stay in Rogers Memorial Hospital, in Wisconsin, where life for Kassy and her family got better. She was even able to hug her mother again. But eventually, the disease returned and Kassy, took her own life in March of 2013. “I’m not mad at her, I’m not mad at God,” said Michelle. “She was just tired.” Michelle decided instead to channel her emotions into helping others who may have children with a mental illness. “There needs to be more resources—province-wide and nation-
wide,” said Michelle. “Here, in Cranbrook, we have a general psychiatrist; they say general, I say general/adult. A child psychiatrist travels here from Calgary only 10 days a year, for the whole East Kootenay.” It used to be inconceivable to her that 15 per cent of Canadian children and youth have a mental health problem. That’s four or five children in every class of 30. Michelle wants every family to know where to go for information, who to phone and what Web sites to look up. She wants to see posters everywhere for sites such as www. mindcheck.ca . “If four teens are going to the movies, and one of them has high anxiety, I want them to be OK with saying they have to sit on the outside aisle seat because being surrounded by other people in the middle seats makes their anxiety skyrocket. I want parents to ask their kids how they are doing. I want more communication and more resources. I
don’t want any parent to have to sit in this chair and give this kind of interview.” She said that currently, there are some parents who have gone through this kind of heartbreak that are working to make a difference. Andy Jones and Mary-Lynn Bernard of Newfoundland recently made headlines in speaking out about their son’s suicide. Their son had a form of OCD as well. Bruce and Leanne Mackenzie are other parents who have gone through what no parent should have to and while their child is still alive, they channeled their experience into the founding of www. ocdbc.ca . “We have the east coast and the west coast, so what I want to happen is for all of us to move this mountain nationally,” said Michelle. “Everyone’s hands here (Cranbrook) are tied. I feel like I’m done locally, and the only way to help locally now is to work nationally. We need to chip at
this from the top down.” You can hear Michelle speak on her experience by doing a Youtube speech search using the phrase, ‘Kassy’s struggle with OCD’, or read her words on www. heretohelp.bc.ca and search for ‘Kassy.’ And on this May 7, National Child and Youth Mental Health Day, give at least a thought about the darkness some of our children live in and in doing so, help shine some light on these children’s tragic struggles. Wear green or green ribbons to recognize and support the day and the families dealing with mental health issues. The Family Smart Web site gave the best reasons for wearing green on this day. “Green signifies new life, new growth and new beginnings. Therefore, we wear green ribbons to raise public awareness and support the mental health of all children, youth and their families.”

Training is all aboutThere balance are so many ways to be
active: some people run, some people participate in sports, some people do weight training and others simply walk their dog on a regular basis. No matter what activity you are involved in, it is all about balance. Too much activity can lead to overtraining and too little activity can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, none of which is beneficial to your Aurélie general health. Wiedemann The right amount of exercise depends on a lot of different factors: your age, your gender, your genetic background (whether you are fast twitch or slow twitch dominant), your previous activity levels etc. All these elements should be taken into account when building an exercise program. It is also very important to pace yourself, too many people are overly enthusiastic when they start a training regimen and often try to do too much too soon. On the other hand, the same people – once the thrill of discovering something new passes – usually lose interest after the first 1-2 months and go back to their sedentary lifestyle. If you know that this is the case for you, it would be wise to: Hire a personal trainer that can keep you motivated and help you reach your goal. Join a team sport club where you have scheduled training sessions, or a gym that offers regular classes. Workout with a friend that is highly motivated and will keep you on tack. If you are too busy to get involved in exercise on a regular basis, try to move your body everyday: Take the stairs instead of the elevator. If your work site isn’t too far from your home, bike or walk there. Park your car at the end of the parking lot, far away from the entrance of the store, and walk there. Walk the dog or go for a walk and change your itinerary as often as possible. Don’t be scared of incorporating some hills to climb – small ones to start – as it is very good for your heart. A tire also performs best, lasts longer and provides best fuel economy when its internal pressure is set at a level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and checked on a regular basis. The tire decal, with optimal front and rear recommended tire pressures, is usually on the driver’s door or door jam. If not, the owner’s manual should give you the information and/or tell you where the tire decal is located. A single under-inflated tire (by about 6 psi /40 kPa) can cause a 3 per cent increase in fuel consumption. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. That said, the pricier fuel may also contain some additional cleaner additives, which is good. Have a great summer and a safe driving vacation. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

The QX60 is a very attractive vehicle to these eyes; it has distinctive Infiniti looks. The projector style headlights flow with the body lines and the fog lights look like they belong instead of an afterthought. The side body lines almost give the appearance of waves moving up the vehicle. LED rear brake lights and center high mounted stoplight sit atop the rear power lift-gate. Chrome accents around the windows give it a sense of elegance. In The Cab:
The cabin seemed large to me at first, but after climbing in and getting comfortable it is really not that big. If you are

a . . . now how can I put this delicately? – If you are an amply proportioned person really spend some time trying out all of the seat positions. Once in the driver’s seat I found the controls well positioned and easy to operate. I liked the navigation screen with 3D mapping, the monitor offers a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and detects moving objects thus providing more help in backing up in a tight parking lot. It features an 8-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, 6 way power front passenger’s seat, 60/40 split folding and sliding second row bench seat that allows easy entry/exit even with a child seat installed, 50/50 split folding third row seat that reclines. The audio system is a 6 speaker, AM/FM/CD with MP3 playback capability and has a speed sensitive volume control. The AWD model receives a Bose 13 speaker premium system. Safety first:
The QX60 includes dual stage front airbags with seatbelt and occupant sensors, driver and front passenger side impact supplement airbags, roof mounted curtain side impact airbags with rollover sensor for all row outboard occupant head protection. Infiniti recognizes how important it is to have children secure in their vehicles. They have developed a latch system that securely anchors a compatible child seat. Intelligent brake assist system is a safety feature that continuously monitors and analyzes closing speeds to a vehicle ahead and provides warnings. If a collision is immanent, it will also apply the brakes. There is also a lane departure warning and prevention system. Power:
A 3.5 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with 265 horsepower and 248 foot pounds of torque power this vehicle. The transmission is an electronically continuously variable
(CVT) with manual shift capabilities. Excellent handling to this vehicle, steering was quick and responsive, and body roll was at a minimum. Even though the engine was more than adequate providing plenty of power, the CVT transmission was continuing
to make adjustments and I found at times sudden bursts of power followed by a hard up shift. Defiantly not something I expected with this type of luxury. Verdict:
I was excited to drive this vehicle but disappointed by the size of the interior space
“They’re not safe. But it would only be a problem in an accident.”
Confessions of a Curber I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. Moving out of the country and need to sell fast! Good condition. Recently inspected. Call cell. I’m flexible on price!! I couldn’t believe how many calls I had. I found my buyer not long after. A nice man about my age; divorced with three kids. That’s all I know about him – I don’t like getting too personal. I was actually honest about the vehicle this time. I told him that the car had been in an
accident and was from the U.S. I asked if he wanted a vehicle history report*, but he declined. He appreciated my honesty, as he’d gone through a few bad deals. With the transaction done, we parted ways. Then I got a call from my buddy. Being a curious person, he’d read the boxes the airbags came in that I’d left at his shop. “You installed counterfeit airbags,” he said. “So? They look identical to the original airbags,” I said. “I’ve seen videos of bogus airbags catching fire and with metal bits exploding when they deploy. They’re not safe,” he scolded. I’ll take my chances, I thought. It would only be a problem in an accident. The next day, my buddy left a message. He ended our friendship. Whoa, chill out. A guy’s got a right to make a few bucks.
*Vehicle History Reports: CarProof
and ICBC vehicle history reports provide detailed information about the registration and accident history of a vehicle. CarProof Verified BC reports also include a lien search. These reports can’t tell you everything a physical inspection will, but they require the seller to Prove it! and not just say it.

Wetlands are some of the most biologically productive natural ecosystems on earth. The St. Mary Valley Rural Residents Association is sponsoring a Wetlands Keepers Workshop on July 25, 26 and 27. The association has completed four years of monitoring water quality on the St. Mary River and has completed a Lake Management Plan for St. Mary Lake. This workshop is the next step in the group’s concern about water quality and protection in the St. Mary Valley watershed. The purpose of the workshop is to monitor and map one of the wetland areas at St. Mary Lake by examining aerial photographs and topographical maps and assessing soil, plants, birds and amphibians in the wetlands. It will train and equip volunteers to map other wetlands in the valley. The information gathered in this workshop will be uploaded to the B.C. Wetlands Atlas and become part of the public record. The Wetlands Keepers workshop has been developed by the B.C. Wildlife Federation and will be delivered by one of their trainers, Leanne Walker. For more information and to register, please contact Virginia Anderson at 250427-7141 or Lindsay Merkel at sunflower@ xplornet.com. The workshop is sponsored by CBT Environmental Initiatives, Kimberley Community Foundation and St. Mary Valley Rural Residents Association.

A life lived is worth remembering. OBITUARY
Kathleen "Kay" Haverstock (nee Roberts) 1916 - 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kathleen on December 10, 2013 at the age of 97 in Kimberley, BC. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Joan (Gary), her granddaughter Sheri (Joe) and grandson David (Melissa). Kay was predeceased by her husband Philip in 1993. Kay was born in Bellevue on October 25, 1916 and spent her early years in Alberta and BC. She met her future husband Phil in Edmonton and, following their marriage in Cadomin on December 24, 1938, lived in Goldfields, Saskatchewan and Yellowknife, NWT. Kay and her family moved to Kimberley in 1949 where she lived happily until her passing. Kay was a long-time member of the Eagles in Kimberley and an active member of the Catholic Women’s League at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She also enjoyed camping, travelling with Phil and spending time at their summer property on Lazy Lake. The family would like to thank the staff at the Kimberley Special Care Home "The Pines" for the wonderful care she received during the past year. Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass for Kay will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Kimberley on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 11:00 am. Her Interment will follow in the Kimberley Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

Construction Questions How Long Will My Fence Last? by Menno Dueck
A few years ago, Cynthia and Carl decided to fence their back yard. They studied How To manuals and watched numerous videos before digging the first post hole. At the end of the project, despite spending their vacation time and money, they were proud of their accomplishment. Unfortunately, it now seemed to be falling apart. This spring they noticed posts were leaning and boards were twisting and coming loose. Frost heaves, heavy rain, scorching sun are not fence friendly. I don’t know anyone who wants to redo their fence in a few years, so here’s some material tips for the Do It Yourselfer or to discuss with people you hire. Posts should be either pressure treated material or cedar. The general rule of thumb is to have one third of the post in the ground and two thirds above. For backfilling and compaction below and around the post, use loose gravel or concrete. Do not fill the space with the dirt or clay from the digging of the hole as moisture will be drawn to the post, causing rot. Over time, pressure treated wood will rot if exposed to enough moisture. Post tops should be protected with a cap, either cedar or
plastic, which allows water to run off and snow to slide. Rails, which go from post to post (and what you fasten privacy boards to) should be pressure treated as well and placed on edge to prevent sagging. Attaching them with brackets adds to stability. Privacy boards may be sealed or stained and should never be in contact with the ground. Using nails may be cheaper, but they will eventually rust and cause you problems. Boards shrink over time and nail holes will widen leading to instability. Dipped screws are a superior product and much easier to remove should the need arise. Constant nailing is also very hard on the hands, arms, shoulders; screwing is gentler on the body. There are many web sites, books and videos that give step by step instructions on building a fence, but if you don’t choose the right materials, how long do you think it will last? Do you want to take it all down in a few years and start again like Cynthia and Carl? Past articles are posted on DueckEnterprises.com under Blog.

available. When doing home improvement jobs, it is now possible to make sensible choices that won’t compromise the health of your family. The first thing to do for a more eco-friendly home is to improve its energy efficiency. Cutting back on heat and air-conditioning requirements is a green choice that will also reduce your gas or electric bill. After carrying out tests to detect where air and heat are escaping, a specialist can help you decide where insulation can increase your efficiency and whether a new roof, windows, doors, or floor coverings can have an impact. Installing faucets that limit water wastage in the kitchen and bathroom is also a priority. By choosing eco-friendly materials for the cabinets and vanities, you can avoid being exposed to toxic products released when certain conditions are present, such as high humidity levels in bathrooms. No matter what type of work is needed inside or outside the home, you can now opt for recycled products or those that have been designed using fewer or even no toxic products. Choose natural materials wherever possible, such as real wood, and ensure that it is of good quality. And be sure to use house paint that is free of volatile organic compounds to ensure better air quality in the home.
